Addison students put skills to work SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA ADDISON – Students at the Technology Center of DuPage got a taste of what it takes to respond to a real-life emergency situation during a recent victim rescue simulation at the Addison school.

The May 15 scenario involved responding to a staged multivehicle accident scene. Students in the Fire Science-EMT program had to assess injuries, extricate victims from the vehicles and transport them to the “medical center” – all the while reporting the situation to the “dispatcher.”

Cosmetology students also put their skills to work, using special makeup techniques to create realistic-looking wounds and injuries on students serving as victims for the scenario.

IC partners with groups to welcome Chinese international students ELMHURST – For any teenager, the transition to high school can be tough.

For international students, add on culture shock and a language barrier between peers and teachers, and the stress can easily become overwhelming.

IC Catholic Prep is looking to help these students with a new partnership with China Education and Research Network Education and the Greater Chicago International Academy in Oak Park.

Alice Wang, the director of student affairs at CERNET Education, said the network is a China-based agency that acts as a “middleman” for parents and students interested in studying abroad.

The network provides programs, hosts orientations for families and students and helps parents keep in frequent communication with their children while they’re away from home.

The day begins with a delicious breakfast hosted by Knights of Columbus, Damen Hildebrand Council, from 8-10 a.m. at the Indian Trail Junior High. Enjoy free pancakes, sausage, juice and coffee. Donations accepted.

There will be a Veterans Resource Fair at Indian Trail from 8:30-10:30 a.m. There will be booths for agencies and non-profits that serve veterans, and info about resources available to all veterans. It will reopen from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

The Addison Historical Museum will be open from 9-11 a.m. and include original World War II field maps and readings of letters between a U.S. soldier and his mother from 1943-1946.

A flag posting will begin at 9:15 a.m. It will be followed by a community march at 9:30 a.m. to St. Paul Cemetery for an observance at 10 a.m., and then a march back to Village Hall.

Led by the DeVry Military Resource Club, members of the military, veterans, family and community members are invited to participate in the approximately 1.5-mile round trip march. Military vehicles will be available to transport those who cannot walk, but wish to participate. Rev. James Zimmerman and the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary will lead the observance.

On the east portico of Village Hall at 11 a.m., the Indian Trail band will perform and there will be a V.F.W. ceremony. Please bring lawn chairs.

A free lunch of hot dogs and chips will be provided, courtesy of the Addison V.F.W. And, don’t forget the quickly approaching Rock ‘N’ Wheels concert season. The first concert is set for June 4. Located behind Village Hall, come out for live music, classic cars as well as food and drinks for sale by local restaurants.

Teachers enhance student learning with Chromebooks

AMANDA TUGADE atugade@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – It’s about 7:45 in the morning, and a group of York Community High School’s English, foreign languages and art teachers head over to the Ellis Room, a small space that rests in the center of the school’s library. Long tables trace the outline of the room, and the teachers sit accordingly.

Instructional technology coaches Katie Diebold and Jill Heaton hand each teacher a Google Chromebook, and Heaton begins the lesson – Google Classroom, an online site that offers a different perspective of distributing information between students and teachers.

The site allows teachers to share and edit handouts, post links to lectures, start a discussion and submit assignments.

Heaton said while Google Classroom allows teachers to do more, it is up to them to keep one question in mind: What is the best way for students to learn – to take today’s lesson and turn it up a notch?

Effey Nassis’ seventh-grade English class at Bryan Middle School answers that question.

Nassis starts the class period by playing a couple “screencasts,” short student-made videos that make an oral presentation of a book report or a PowerPoint slideshow look “old school.”

Soon after, the students grab their Google Chromebooks from a gray cart at the back of the classroom and take the rest of the period to work on their final project – a digital poem analysis.

“It’s all about learning,” said David Smith, director of technology at Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205. “What’s behind all of this is preparing students for college and ultimately, their careers.”

Following a unanimous decision by the Board of Education on May 12, the district will take the next step to require high school students to purchase Google Chromebooks beginning next fall in addition to buying textbooks for their classes. As for middle school students, District 205 is

working on supplying Google Chromebooks for them to use during class.

Michelle Fitzgerald, assistant superintendent for Learning and Teaching, and Cathy Baker, instructional technology coordinator, said they also have discussed ways to improve the schools’ technology-based classes.

Fitzgerald and Baker would like to introduce basic coding in middle school computer classes. They also are developing an internship program for high school students to help repair issues with Google Chromebooks and continue their learning in other technology-based classes.

Fitzgerald recognizes this is a shift for all teachers and students, and in an effort to ease the transition, the district assigned instructional coaches to provide support for them.

York High School student gets highest possible ACT score ELMHURST – York Community High School student Kathryn “Julia” Dierksheide earned the highest possible composite score – a 36 – on the ACT test she took in March.

Dierksheide is a member of the National Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society, York Advisory Team, York Varsity Badminton and the Illinois Music Educators Association All-State and District Orchestra, according to a school district news release.

Dierksheide, a member of the York STEM Club, was a state qualifier in the Illinois Junior Academy of Science competition, the release stated.

Always remember is Memorial Day mantra Shortly after I became president and CEO of the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry in November of 1999, retired banker and chamber volunteer Ralph Pechanio came to my office (then on Maple Street) to inquire if I knew that my new job included serving as his co-chairman for Elmhurst’s Memorial Day Parade Committee. I had no idea. But I would be honored to do so. Back in 1997, when Elmhurst American Legion COMMUNITY THB Post 187 asked Pechanio VOICE to take over the responsibility John R. of organizing the parade on Quigley behalf of Post 187 and the former Veterans of Foreign Wars Walter A. Gloss Post 2048 in Elmhurst, he humbly volunteered.

A veteran of the U.S. Army (1965-67), Pechanio played an integral role in the building of the Elmhurst Veteran Memorial in Wilder Park as Fundraising Chair, while serving as the Chairman (then President) of the ECCI Board of Directors. He has also chaired Elmhurst’s Veterans Memorial Commission since its inception before the memorial’s dedication May 31, 1993. Pechanio asked then-Executive Director A.J. “Toche” Terrones for chamber assistance, and my predecessor immediately agreed.

After Terrones’ passing 16 years ago, the torch got passed to me.

While the city pays the staffing cost for police, fire and public works and covers related expenses, and the chamber affords me the time, it is Pechanio who does the yeoman’s work gratis.

Like with me, William “Bill” Shanklin succeeded his late fellow Legionnaire William “Bill” Ralston as Master of Ceremonies at the Post-Parade Ceremony.

On May 25, Elmhurst will stage its 97th annual Memorial Day Parade through downtown Elmhurst, followed by a Post-Parade Military Ceremony at the Veterans Memorial. Similar parades and ceremonies will be conducted across the U.S. over that holiday weekend. Always remember is the everlasting theme of Elmhurst’s Memorial Day Parades, with the mood more somber and reflective. While marching bands do play patriotic music, there are no lights flashing, no sirens blaring and horns honking common in celebratory parades – including Elmhurst’s renowned St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Our 2015 Parade Grand Marshal is Vietnam War veteran Jerry E. Pask, Specialist 5, U.S. Army, the Elmhurst Park District’s Parade Committee representative until his recent retirement as a Landscape Architect.

This year marks both the 50th Anniversary of the entrance of combat troops in Vietnam and the 40th Anniversary of the fall of Saigon. My brother Tom served two tours in Vietnam, while my 1973 draft class never got called.

Railway oil tanker concerns need to be taken seriously We spend a lot of time worrying about preventing things that might never happen. We buy homeowners’ insurance and install smoke detectors in case a fire ever breaks out. We grab an umbrella on the way out the door in case it rains. We arrange for our first responders to have training in all sorts of emergency situations, in case anyone in our community should ever experience such a calamity.

The thing is, we never really know how likely any of these things are. Most of us know someone who has dealt with a house fire, but most people don’t have their house burn down. There was rain in the forecast for this past Sunday, but barely a drop was seen. Some first responders get special training in case of a train derailment of an oil shipment, but that almost never – Well, that last one isn’t quite as true as it used to be. While train derailments are still quite rare, the number of oil shipments on our railways has skyrocketed – and there have been some unsettling derailments of those shipments in North America.

In 2008, there were 9,500 railway oil shipments recorded in the U.S.; by 2013, that number had risen to 435,000, according to a Congressional report. That massive spike has been accompanied this year by derailments in West Virginia and Ontario and one in March in Galena, Ill. Fortunately, there have been no deaths in these incidents, but the same can’t be said for the village of Lac-Mégantic, Quebec, in Canada, which suffered 47 deaths after a derailment and explosion in 2013.

Many of these oil tankers are rumbling through Chicago’s suburbs on a daily basis, including on Metra’s BNSF, Union Pacific West and Heritage Corridor lines. Riverside Police Chief Tom Weitzel, who’s eager to bring more attention to this issue, has heard reports that there are about 40 shipments going through his village on a weekly basis.

As Weitzel points out, most of the communities in western Cook and DuPage counties were built around their rail lines, with vibrant

commercial districts nestled right up to the tracks. If an incident like what happened in Quebec were to occur here, the toll could be catastrophic.

Weitzel has worked to bring attention not only to this risk but to the lack of training available for local police officers, who would likely be the first to respond to the scene of any such accident. He’s sent letters to Gov. Bruce Rauner and to Anthony Foxx, secretary of the U.S. Department of Transportation, pointing out the difficulties local agencies have in getting information on when exactly such tankers are passing through and in getting training for officers.

Such training already exists, Weitzel said, and there are programs in place to allow firefighters to make use of it. But he said the cost, distance and lengthy waiting list make it impractical for him to send any officers right now.

Thus far, Weitzel has received no response from his letters. He’s had informal discussions with other state and federal officials and received nothing more than vague promises, or protestations that he’s overstating the issue, that the train cars that pass through our area aren’t going fast enough to derail or real-time information on the tankers can’t be shared for fear of terrorists intercepting and then misusing the information.

It’s easy to dismiss Weitzel’s concerns. But it seems like every disaster of the past 20 years has had some sort of warning ignored, whether it was 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, the Deepwater Horizon oil spill ... the list goes on.

Are the odds of an oil tanker derailment and explosion in our area high? Probably not.

But knowing there’s a lot more oil flowing through our towns on a regular basis, it sure would be comforting to know someone is taking these concerns seriously. We’d like to see state and especially federal officials take more steps to ease everyone’s minds that everything possible is being done to prevent another Lac-Mégantic incident.

Animal shelters are not zoos

Health clubs’ unfair practices

To the person who said to stop shooing people away from shelter animals, we are not shooing people away who are ready to adopt an animal, a family pet. We don’t want the people who are coming for something to do because they clog up the shelter like a zoo. We want the people that are 100-percent ready to adopt; anybody else can see the animals on our website. And in regards to the rescues that do not have a brick-andmortar building, those people have the most limited time to spend adopting an animal out because they do not have a physical shelter. Their animals are at vet offices or foster homes. So, until you are 100-percent ready to adopt and see an animal, don’t fill out an application.

Someone needs to fix health clubs’ cancellation policies. No matter how much of a notice you give, you still wind up paying for the extra month. You pay an enrollment fee, you pay a monthly fee, you sign up right away and can start working out, but even when I brought my health club a doctor’s note saying that I had to stop my workout regimen, I was charged an extra month ... That’s just wrong.

Academy acts as a bridge for the network and partnered American schools in the Chicago area, Assistant Principal Stephanie Wang-Taillon said. The academy offers housing for Chinese international students, as well as transportation to and from school, English classes and extracurricular activities. The dorm-like atmosphere also includes mentors and advisers for students.

Wang-Taillon said in a way, the academy acts as a “parent” for these students, especially since the adjustment does take time.

IC Catholic Prep students Molly Zhang, 16, and Amy Zhang, 15, are examples of the kinds of students who will benefit from the partnership.

They said they were afraid to speak English in class and to other students because they did not know the language all that well and were afraid of being laughed at.

The two teens said even though they did not come through the new partnership, they found ways to adjust. With the help of after-school programs and IC’s teachers, they were able to be more comfortable.

“It gets better every day,” Molly said.

Huerta Magic Earns Red Stars Comeback Draw at Houston Rookie records second consecutive brace Chicago, Illinois – The Chicago Red Stars stayed undefeated in their fifth NWSL regular season game on Friday, fighting back from two goals down against hosts Houston Dash, courtesy of a second consecutive brace by reigning NWSL Player of the Week Sofia Huerta. The rookie bagged both of her tallies in the second half, including the first immediately after Houston had doubled its lead courtesy of a Kealia Ohai strike. Rachel Axon had scored the day’s opening goal for the Dash on an opening-half penalty kick.

The hosts created the first promising opportunity in the 10th minute, Jen LaPonte hitting a long ball into the penalty area and Brittany Bock beating netminder Michele Dalton to the ball, only to see her headed redirect float just over the frame. The Dash had another quality look 14 minutes later, as Chicago’s New Zealand international Abby Erceg headed the ball out to Tiffany McCarty at the edge of the box and the 24-year-old fired through traffic to force a solid stop from Dalton.

Houston did find the net just before the half-hour mark. Red Stars defender Arin Gilliland’s desperation tackle brought Ohai to the ground inside the area and Rachael Axon opened the scoring by side-footing a textbook penalty kick inside the right post.

Huerta first knocked on the Dash door in the 41st minute of the match, as she received the ball at the top of the box and cut across a defender to her left before rifling a left-footed blast toward goal that was parried wide by diving opposition goalkeeper Bianca Henninger.

Chicago increased the urgency after the break and created two close looks in quick succession.

In the 56th minute, Alyssa Mautz crossed the ball in from the right and a wide-open Rachel Quon pushed the ball wide for an agonizing miss from the doorstep. Lois Darlene (Kauffman) Brown passed away peacefully on May 14th, 2015, at Lexington Square in Lombard, Illinois.

Lois was born to Jessie and Hattie Raffensberger Kauffman on June 17, 1925, on the family farm in Dickinson County, Kansas. She graduated from McPherson College (KS) and was married to Dale Weaver Brown in 1947. Together, after Iowa and Kansas, they lived and thrived in the Lombard community for over three decades until 1993 (returning in 2013).

While raising three children, Lois was dedicated to all forms of hospitality and engagement in the church and community. This notably included teaching piano lessons to dozens of children and entertaining guests from all over the world, many who were related to Bethany Theological Seminary (formerly of Oak Brook, IL) and the wider Church of the Brethren community. Lois also loved gardening and caring for children.

During her lifetime, Lois also called other significant communities home including Des Moines (IA), McPherson (KS), Elizabethtown (PA), and North Manchester (IN). She remains fondly remembered, chiefly for nurturing relationships through her meticulous hospitality. Her lesserknown excellent role as an ensemble piano accompanist further serves as a metaphor symbolizing her commitment to hard work, generosity, artistry, and amenability.

Lois is survived by her husband, Dale who continues to reside at Lexington Square; and their three children, Deanna (Brian Harley) Brown, Dennis (Dorothy) Brown, and Kevin (Kim Pece) Brown; as well as grandchildren, Katie Brown and Maria DeBartolo.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and beloved sister, Helen Reed, of Salina, Kansas; as well as by many dear friends and extended family members.

Memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 6, 2:00 p.m., at York Center Church of the Brethren, 1S 071 Luther Avenue, Lombard, IL, 60148.

In recent months, College of DuPage administrators and faculty have stressed the controversies surrounding the school have not affected its academics.

The college received a letter May 5 from the Higher Learning Commission, which is the school’s accreditation agency, stating the College of DuPage had been placed under review.

“Commission policy on Special Monitoring ... allows the Commission President to approve the scheduling of special monitoring for an institution when it is undergoing ‘serious legal, financial, or ethical investigations,’” Commission President Barbara Gellman-Danley stated in the letter.

She cited several items and media reports in the letter to school President Robert Breuder, who has been placed on paid leave. Included are “federal, civil and criminal investigations related to institutional finances, ethics violations and changes to assigned credit hours for courses offered through the Suburban Law Enforcement Academy.”

Hands down of course, the chicken is the hero of the meal.

Never frozen, the meat is marinated for 24 hours and cooked to order. According to the restaurant’s website, the recipe dates back to two female farm owners who sold chickens to the original spot when it was just a gas station with a lunch counter around the 1940s. Dell Rhea took over the Chicken Basket in 1963, and what endures is the carefully crafted, breaded and deep-fried meal – a crunchy, tender, lip-smacking and succulent sensation.

The baked mac and cheese is a hearty complementary dish to the main course. Tiny elbow macaroni are smothered in what the eatery describes as a “Colorado River of Cheese Sauce,” topped with shredded cheeses and baked until golden brown.

The restaurant menu extends to sandwiches, ribs, salad bar, soups and seafood, plus prime rib, roast turkey and other specials on various days of the week.

The only mistake my parents and I made that Sunday afternoon was not saving room for dessert. And for those who know me and my mother best, the only way to our hearts is a classic root beer float.

Dell Rhea’s, which also proposes a Route 66 Dreamsicle Float and a slice of apple, key lime or cherry pie, keeps in mind that the best way to truly start and end a meal is with the company you keep, savoring the time you spend together.

WILLOWBROOK – Dell Rhea’s Chicken Basket is tucked among small, one-story buildings and a few chain hotels on a dusty, winding road that once reigned as Route 66. Today, the towering neon marquee of the Willowbrook establishment enjoys a quieter perch.

Inside tells a different story.

Clusters of relatives and favorite friends are gathered around small tables draped in red-andwhite-checkered tablecloths. A darker shade of patterned red curtains flanks the windows.

Ceramic chickens, framed newspaper articles and photographs fill in the spaces of sporadically placed shelves and countertops. A small fireplace stands flat against the wall on the far end of the dining room.

The room feels familiar. It feels like home. And there’s no denying that the 66-plus-yearold restaurant has greeted passersby throughout the decades, treated them like family and wished them well on the way to their destinations. As for the Chicken Basket, it arrived in the Route 66 Hall of Fame.

As my parents and I took our seats and scanned the menu, we adopted the rhythm of the nostalgic room, swapping smiles and stories.

Importantly, we prepped ourselves for the beginning of our comfort food adventure.

We began our meal with appetizers we consider classic – fried chicken liver and gizzards.

The tasty starters were served with sweet-and-spicy barbecue sauce. What’s noteworthy about them is their flaky coating, especially the chicken gizzards.

Both were crispy, moist and lightly seasoned – neither bogged down by a dry outer crust nor drowning in oil.

Our appetizers were followed shortly by two of Dell Rhea’s specialties – its famous fried chicken in a basket and baked mac and cheese.

The basket comes with four, finger-licking pieces of chicken (leg, wing, breast and thigh), shoestring french fries, homemade coleslaw and baked biscuits. I don’t even know

Gymnastics coaches award ‘best news’ for Bode

HINSDALE – Sam Bode may not have won a state medal, but he still earned some accolades at the state gymnastics meet.

The York senior barely missed a top-five, all-state medal during the individual state meet May 16 at Hinsdale Central, but he still came away with quite an award.

Bode was named Senior Gymnast of the Year by the Illinois High School Gymnastics Coaches Association. He’s the first York gymnast to be honored since Keith Scorza in 1988.

“I almost shed a tear. It was the best news I’ve heard all day,” Bode said. “It’s such an honor to be voted on by all of the coaches in the state. It really meant a lot. I thought it said a lot about my character, about my personality.”

Though he didn’t medal, Bode reached the individual finals for the third straight year.

He was sixth on horizontal bar (8.1) and ninth on pommel horse (7.85), and qualified in the other four events. He tied for 13th in the all-around competition with a score of 49.45 May 15.

In 2013, Bode tied for sixth at state on vault (9.1), just .15 points from fifth. Bode was .15 points from the two-way tie for fourth on horizontal bar this year.

A loaded offense features power hitters Alyssa Sclafani and freshman standout Nikki Cuchran, but Isabell Alexander, Morganne Evans, Lauren Trojnar, Emily Lezcano and Amy Bukovsky also are dangerous bats.

That kind of depth helped earn Montini the top sectional seed.

“Our kids really bought in from a physical standpoint, working out in the offseason,” coach Mike Bukovsky said.

“They’ve put time in to do that and that was important for us. Now we’re just trying to make the next level with doing the little things on an every day basis.”

Glenbard South, St. Francis and Lemont are the other high seeds in Montini’s sectional.

Outlook: Back-to-back West Suburban Silver losses earlier this week busted York’s conference title hopes.

Hinsdale Central beat the Dukes 10-3 on May 18 and Oak Park-River Forest thumped York 11-0 on May 20. That mini losing streak doubles the Dukes’ loss total for the season.

Now, the Dukes will try to refocus on the postseason.

York is the top seed in the Niles West sectional, though No. 2 OPRF will be playing with a lot of confidence after taking the conference title.

“It’s awesome to get No. 1, but we know there are fantastic teams ranked behind us so I think we just need to keep focus inning-by-inning and pitch-by-pitch and forget that we’re No. 1,” coach Jenna Bode said. “We just need to take it in the moment.”

Here’s the playoff outlook for Addison Trail, Montini and York.

Addison Trail Regional: Addison Trail Sectional: St. Charles East Sectional seed: No. 18 First game: 11 a.m. May 25 at No. 14 Lake Park

Outlook: It wasn’t a start

to remember for the Blazers, but a second-half turnaround makes them a team playing better than their No. 18 seed.

AT has a legit ace in sophomore Nick Villasenor (1.57 ERA) while Joey Zucchero and Nick Fugarino have also been solid lately.

The Blazers will hope the pitching can carry them on a playoff run. If they get past host Lake Park in the regional quarterfinal, they would host No. 3 seed St. Charles East in a regional semifinal.

The Blazers won their final three West Suburban Gold series, taking two out of three from Hinsdale South and sweeping Morton and Proviso East.

“We’re getting hot at the right time, late in the year with the tournament coming up,” coach Michael Kennedy said. “To close out conference going 9-1 after an 0-8 start that’s pretty good.”

Montini senior pitcher Sean Frontzak can match up with almost any pitcher in the state, so the Broncos are certainly capable of winning on the road.

Outlook: The Broncos enter the season with high expectations after returning a good chunk of last year’s sectional York finalist squad.

York opens the playoffs by hosting Streamwood in a regional quarterfinal. A victory would set up a match up with top sectional seed St. Charles North, which beat the Dukes 8-2 on April 11.

By DAVE OWEN editorial@mysuburbanlife.com RIVER FOREST – York’s girls soccer team is hurting, but opponents are also feeling the pain.

Despite having four key players sidelined for the season by injuries, the Lady Dukes (11-5-2) have six wins in their last seven games heading into the Class 3A Trinity regional title game against Downers Grove North on May 23 at 11 a.m.

The latest success came in a 5-0 blanking of Trinity in a regional semifinal May 19.

“We’ve found a way,” York coach Don Vana said. “Even shorthanded, the girls came out today and performed well.”

“It’s the encouragement of everyone working as a team,” junior forward Madison Casey said of overcoming the injuries, “and knowing that if we work hard enough, we can work through it.”

Casey played key roles in the decisive first two goals. Her shot off a Jenna Lundgren pass deflected to senior Carys Hund, whose goal in the 14th minute put York up 1-0. Four minutes later, Casey scored off a Lundgren pass into the box from the left side to make it 2-0.

“Carys Hund and Madison Casey came out and did a great job,” Vana said. “Those were the two that really got us going early on the flanks. That kind of softened things up, and then the middle really opened up and we had a little more time.”

“Downers North plays a very solid team game, and they’ve only given up 12 goals all year,” Vana said. “They’re a very good team. It’s going to be hard for us to find a way.”

But finding a way through adversity has been York’s specialty all year.

“We’re really excited about going as far as we can,” Casey said. “We have a lot of determination. We don’t want to go off the field knowing we could have tried harder.

“We’re all ready. We want to prove that last game [with Downers North] was a mishap, and that we can beat them.”

BADMINTON Addison Trail Alyssa Lombardo went 1-2 with a consolation draw win at the state tournament. Izy Kantor went 0-2.
