Man held on murder charges in Bensenville shooting SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA BENSENVILLE – A Chicago man has been charged with murder in the January slaying of a Bensenville store clerk. Stephan Russell, 20, of 3503 W. Armitage Ave., Chicago, appeared in court March 28, where Judge Daniel Guerin ordered he be held without bond for murder, according to a DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office news release. Russell was arrested March 20 and held on $2.5 million bond until March 28 on

But now, the self-proclaimed “Hot Dog Lady of Elmhurst” is fighting to keep her spot. “I see some of the people more than I see my own family,” said Uslander, of the relationships she’s made with customers and regulars in the downtown. She’s gathered more than 300 signatures during the past week on the website www. change.org. The Elmhurst City Council soon will vote on a report from the Public Affairs and Safety Committee that would permanently eliminate Uslander’s spot from the approved locations for pushcart

Park District offering various Easter events By MARI GRIGALIUNAS mgrigaliunas@shawmedia.com ADDISON – For some, a sugar-covered Peep or hollow chocolate bunny handed to them in a basket is enough, but for those who love the thrill of earning their treats, the Addison Park District is hosting several good old-fashioned – and some not-so-old-fashioned – egg hunts.

April 10 Teen Flashlight Egg Hunt: 8 p.m., Centennial Park Those too old to participate in the traditional egg hunt can hunt for the special golden egg and win a special prize, as long as they aren’t scared of the dark. “We thought this would be kind of fun,” said Geri Estvanik, Addison Park District’s manager of development. Teens ages 11 to 16 are invited to bring a flashlight and hunt around the park after dark for hidden eggs. Participants are required to register today for the event.

Easter Egg Hunt: 10:30 a.m., Community Park The classic race to collect the most brightly colored eggs scattered across a bed of green grass is a tried and true favorite. Estvanik estimates the egg hunt has been a park tradition for more than four decades. While the tradition is long standing, the hunt lasts less than a minute, Estvanik said. “Five thousand eggs are gobbled up within about 40 seconds,” she said. The park district breaks about 500 participants into twoyear age groups before the children 10 years old and younger race their peers to capture as many colorful eggs as possible. The most important advice Estvanik can give is to be on

time, or better yet, be early. The hunt starts promptly at 10:30 a.m. “It goes really fast,” she said. The egg hunt goes on rain or shine, but in the case of very poor weather, the egg hunt will be held in the gymnasium. Aqua Egg Hunt: 12:30 to 2 p.m., Club Fitness For those who can’t wait to slip into their swimsuits after a record cold and snowy winter, the park district also will hold an aqua egg hunt in the indoor pool. “We’re hoping this year it’ll be really popular,” Estvanik said. The family event is open during family swim time, and unlike the outdoor egg hunt, Estvanik expects the eggs to last through the entire event. Members and nonmembers of Club Fitness are both welcome. The Easter Bunny will even hop over for poolside photos. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $4 a child and $5 a adult.

Board waives rent for school Narcan saves two lives By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com WHEATON – A nonprofit school for students with severe disabilities has encountered financial difficulty because of low enrollment and is getting a reprieve from DuPage County. Joseph Academy, which opened December 2012 in Wheaton, serves students who struggle with emotional, behavioral and learning challenges. Executive Director Mike Schack said the school hoped to have 18 to 20 students referred to its program through their school districts, but only have eight. The school owed nearly $12,000 in rent to its landlord, DuPage County, but the payments were waived at the county board’s March 25 meeting, at which Joseph was also granted permission to operate rent-free through the end of September.

The academy, which has locations in Des Plaines, Hometown and Melrose Park, is housed in the former Du-Page County Juvenile Detention Facility. Schack said recent financial troubles have meant fewer school districts can to afford to send students in need of specialized help to the school. “Some districts have suffered more financially than others,” he said. “But state reimbursements are late and less than they used to be. Districts are seeing lower tax revenues. Everyone is seeing a lot of different things, so it’s been hard for them to place children in specialized service education.” The debt forgiveness showed the board’s desire to have Joseph in the county, said board member Jim Healy, who added it is a benefit to every school district, parent and child in the area. “Prior to this, we were

sending our kids out of this county, some of them having to travel long distances,” he said. “This is something that we absolutely need to try to keep in the county, and this is the perfect location for it.” Healy said the board should encourage school districts to participate in the program. Board member Robert Larsen clarified that the goal was not to offer a long-term, rent-free situation, but to allow the school to grow and eventually pay rent on its own. The board will revisit the issue in September to decide whether to extend or alter the lease agreement, which expires in July 2016. Board Chairman Dan Cronin said the program was a good use for the space formerly occupied by the detention center. “If Joseph Academy succeeds in their mission, we won’t need youth homes,” he said.

from heroin overdose SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA Two lives were saved from heroin overdose in a five-day span thanks to the DuPage Narcan Program, according to the DuPage County Health Department. A sheriff’s deputy used Narcan, a nonaddictive drug that can reverse a potentially fatal overdose, on March 22 to assist a 32-year-old woman in unincorporated DuPage County near Villa Park, marking the first life saved through the program, the health department said. The deputy was responding to a call of a sick person about 1:20 a.m. “This is the first case of DNP-issued Narcan saving a life, and we expect that trend to continue. More lives will be saved, and that is the ultimate goal of this county partnership,” health department Executive Director Karen Ayala said in a news release. Just four days later on

March 26, the program notched its second save. Hanover Park police responded to a call of a sick person about 9 p.m. and reversed the overdose of a 29-year-old man. “The fact that our department just completed the DNP training a week ago and already put this life-saving training to use to save a life is amazing,” Hanover Park Police Chief David Webb said in a release. The DuPage Narcan Program is a response to the rising number of DuPage County heroin-related deaths in recent years, including 46 in 2013. Training began in November to teach DuPage County law enforcement personnel how to identify symptoms of an overdose and how to administer Narcan. More than 1,200 officers in DuPage County are expected to be equipped with Narcan by May.

Student event leads upcoming happenings Hooray! The calendar tells us it is finally spring, and we’re all hoping that weather conditions from now on will prove it. Finally we can look forward to the return of green grass, spring flowers and the next few months of activities that will bring us outdoors more to enjoy the lack of snow and cold. One of my favorite spring events is the Addison Chamber of Commerce Annual Student Honors Banquet, which will be held at The Empress Banquets here in Addison on Tuesday, April 22. Each year we recognize the top 30 graduating students from Addison Trail High School. ACCI memCOMMUNITY bers attend and sponsor the VOICE students as their guests, all Bernadette of whom are presented with LaRocca certificates of merit. Scholarship applications were sent to those students along with their invitation, and copies were made available to all the ATHS graduates through the school guidance office. Every year after reviewing the applications, I am more and more convinced that the future of this country is going to be in great hands. It’s a true pleasure to honor them and wish them well as they pursue their dreams. Some of the other upcoming events in the next few months include our April 24 luncheon meeting at Alta Villa Banquets, when our guest speaker Dan Cronin will address attendees on economic development, a combined multichamber progressive luncheon April 30, and a special multichamber luncheon meeting May 23 at Alta Villa Banquets where our keynote speaker will be U.S. Rep. Charity neighborhood cleanups a win-win With the summer season coming, there’s gonna be a lot of walkathons, runs and marathons for charitable organizations. Why don’t these organizations combine their walks with neighborhood cleanups? I’m sure people in the neighborhood appreciate it, and collecting donations as they clean up various blocks and sections and parks of the area, they would gather more money for their charitable organizations, instead of just people walking on an assigned path. Collect the recyclables separate, garbage separate and if there’s any hazardous materials found, keep those separate. If some group came down my block and was collecting garbage, I’d sure give them some money for doing it. And it’s a win-win situation. Neighborhood wins and the charity wins.

Media reporting on pension crisis is unfair

The media is not reporting the pension crisis fairly. What they are leaving out is the fact that teachers in Illinois are not eligible for Social Security. They do not get Social Security when they retire. They get their pension instead. That’s it. You can’t rip that out from under them. How would you like it if we ripped the Social Security out from everyone because we want to pay less taxes there? You can’t steal the teacher’s retirement. They need their pension. About 9:30 a.m. Saturday, March 22, I heard water running (sounded like Niagara Falls). In our bathroom, hot water and steam were shooting out from under the sink. My husband, being in a wheelchair, could not help. Our son’s phone was not on at that time. I called 911 and was transferred to the fire department. On the telephone, they made sure there were no electrical outlets by the floor so we would not be electrocuted. Within minutes, three firefighters were coming up my driveway. They assessed the situation and took care of the problem for us. What a great comfort it is to know whatever the emergency is, our Glen Ellyn Fire Department is there to help. I am so grateful, and I want to say “thank you” from the bottom of my heart.

Gannon, a 2005 Glenbard East High School alumna, was diagnosed in December 2012 with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, a common inherited nerve disorder that causes problems with the sensory and motor nerves – the nerves that run from the arms and legs to the spinal cord and brain. “Basically, your nerves die and then your muscles atrophy and waste away,” Gannon said. “It affects the calf muscles first. Within the last year, I’ve lost a centimeter and a half in both of my calves.” Symptoms for Gannon began at 8 years old and progressively got worse. She was originally treated for Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome, but despite physical therapy, the symptoms got worse. “It just never got better, and once I got to high school, things got a lot worse,” Gannon said. “I was still in regular PE and was falling down. They would have to come with a wheelchair to get me.”

While Gannon would love to win, she is more enthusiastic about getting the opportunity to meet the other state winners. “It’s really going to be about learning everyone’s platforms and how we can use that in our own states to raise awareness,” Gannon said. “She’s going to be a fine representative for Illinois,” Reinhardt said. “I am extremely proud of her. This is going to be a challenge for her endurance-wise, but I think over the course of playing basketball, she’s learned how to pace herself and that is what she is going to do.” Gannon’s long-term dream is to compete with the USA Women’s Wheelchair Basketball Team in the 2016 Paralympic Games, but she knows her CMT may hinder that. More importantly, Gannon is studying to be a social worker focused on early intervention. “For me, getting a degree is Ms. Wheelchair America? Despite her affliction, Gannon has maintained an active lifestyle. She is a starter and the 2013-14 MVP for the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago Sky Women’s Wheelchair Basketball team. Gannon is also active in adaptive water skiing and wakeboarding. “Being active in sports has helped me so much mentally,” Gannon said. Kathy Reinhardt, head coach of the Sky, said she admires Gannon for her endurance and spirit. “I have a lot of faith in her,” Reinhardt said. “She is not afraid to overcome the disability that she has.” Gannon’s disability means she is often more fatigued than other players on the court, but with the aid and tutelage of Reinhardt, who has multiple sclerosis and can relate, Gannon has continued to thrive. Gannon was originally informed about the Ms. Wheelchair Illinois competition by former winner and fellow wheelchair basketball player Danielle Austin. Initially hesitant to enter, Gannon got the nudge she needed from her biggest advocate, her 10-yearold sister Abby. “I can’t say enough positive things about her,” Gannon said. “She is my biggest supporter when it comes to my disability and will do anything I need that I can’t do.”

Man charged with child porn SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA GLENDALE HEIGHTS – A Glendale Heights man was charged with seven counts of possession of child pornography March 27, according to a Glendale Heights Police Department news release. Glendale Heights police were led to Richard W. Harrod, 67, of the 2100 block of Whitman Drive, through a child pornography investigation initiated by the Illinois

Attorney General’s Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, according to the release. Richard W. E v i d e n c e Harrod uncovered in the investigation was turned over to Glendale Heights police investigators, who obtained a search warrant for Harrod’s residence, the

release stated. Investigators seized computer equipment from his home when the search warrant was carried out March 27 and found several computerized files depicting child pornography, according to the release. Harrod, who was present at the time the search warrant was executed, was arrested and taken to the DuPage County Jail, where he is being held on $150,000 bond, the release stated.

He said the only approved construction project in the area now is the Addison Park Deck. “There’s already a four-story parking deck approved,” Wagner said. Because of that, Wagner believes the retail on the first floor of the project will increase foot traffic in the Schiller Passageway. While he said the committee didn’t see an increase in pedestrian traffic recently, he said the committee would like to open the passage. “I didn’t pose a safety hazard during Cool Cars when it was at its peak. This doesn’t make sense,” Uslander said. Elmhurst Fire Chief Jeffery Bacidore responded via email to calls from Suburban Life Media, stating his concerns are the same as the committee’s. The report also removes 10 special food vendor spots in the Schiller Passageway that are allowed during automobile exhibition events, since Cool Cars Under the Stars won’t be held this year. “We’ll always be looking at this ordinance,” Wagner said. He explained that as the downtown changes, new discussions and analysis are necessary. “Change is usually good,” he said. Uslander said she’s seen the

downtown change a lot during the past 23 years, but not always for the best. “It was just such a quaint town, and it had such character. ... It’s lost that,” she said. She started her hot dog cart in tribute to her own childhood in Chicago when she remembers her family would stop by a cart on Milwaukee Avenue for a few dogs during a busy Saturday afternoon of shopping. In Elmhurst, seniors often stop by and tell her which Chicago hot dog carts they remember visiting during their childhood, and young parents come by with their children because they remember Uslander’s cart from when they were kids. “I’ve now created those memories for them that I have,” Uslander said. Uslander likes her spot because not only can patrons on York Street see her cart’s umbrella, but through the Schiller Passageway, shoppers on Addison Avenue can see if she’s there. She worries that, on the other side of York, Addison shoppers won’t be able to spot her through the passage. “There are other vendors that are probably willing to be at that location,” Wagner said. “This is not about the hot dog lady.” While Uslander usually rolls out her cart in April, she’s been left in limbo while the city considers moving her across the street. Mago conjures lively setting for Mexican dining BOLINGBROOK – When dining out, sometimes it’s nice to get hit with some degree of spectacle – bright colors, live music and big tastes. For those times, Mago Grill & Cantina in Bolingbrook is a fine place to indulge in elevated Mexican fare. The decor hits you like a hot pepper. The walls are painted in bright purple and orange, with the restaurant’s name in giant, pop-art letters adorning one side. Rows of luchador masks line the back walls. Another wall shows off row upon row of various tequilas and spirits, all in colorful displays. A live mariachi band began playing among patrons as my date and I left – and the table they were singing to seemed delighted. The meal started like many do at Mexican restaurants, with chips and salsa. Mago, however, upped the ante with warm chips and a trio of three brightly colored and wonderfully fresh and flavorful salsas. The cilantro-based one was a personal favorite. We followed with a ceviche tasting, featuring a citrusy shrimp, lime and cilantro tilapia, and scallop chile. Much like their salsa predecessors, all three were highly distinctive. The scallop, in particular, was well-cooked and deftly balanced with some vinegar acidity. The shrimp dish included olive tidbits, adding a layer of complexity and welcome contrast with the other two. And the main events – the chicken mole and the beef and cheese chile rellenos – both deeply impressed. I noticed that Mago devoted an entire page of the menu to five different types of mole sauces and their eight meat

Thankfully, that time and dedication were evident in the flavor. The mole ranchero, featuring chile ancho, chile pasilla and pumpkin seeds, was very straightforward, but had a ring of authentic smokiness that screamed care and love. And simply put, the rellenos were some of the best I have ever had. Both the cheese and beef versions were perfectly breaded and fried, with nary a bit of batter coming off the peppers as you ate them. But the true test was my date, who is a connoisseur of the stuff. She, too, gave them the stamp of approval – they managed to have strong flavors without overpowering any one ingredient. The beef was well-seasoned and stood its own under delicious heaps of sauce, while the cheese had just enough body to remain intact yet perfectly melted.

ou can tell it’s Lent without going to church:

! Groceries are packed with seafood and coupon deals. ! Fast-food joints are rolling out sandies with names such as Reel Big Fillet (Arby’s) and the Premium Alaskan (BK), which replaced the politically incorrect Whaler. KFC is fighting back with its Colonel’s Double Fillet monster. JIM HILLIBISH ! McDonald’s hopes to beat last year’s sales of 296 million Filet-O-Fish with cheese, says spokeswoman Dayna Proud. Some 30 percent happens during Lent. That’s nearly four times what they sell on a normal day. The fried fish balls, Fish McBites, help power the excitement. ! And then we have all those fish frys at nearly every Catholic church, consuming tons of frozen white fish. Those who eat in do their part. Seafood Business tracked Lent sales and found cod is the king with 60 percent more sales, followed by talapia at 32 percent and salmon at 30 percent. If you’re tired of all this fish noise, there are some Lent-conscious recipes that accomplish the task. Try some of these when you cannot look at another fried pollock.

LENTEN CASSEROLE • 1 pound fresh mushrooms, diced • 1 pound cauliflower florets • 1 pound broccoli florets • 1 large onion, minced • 1/2 cup carrots, diced • 1 stick butter • 3 T flour STOCK.XCHNGE • 1 cup chicken broth • 1/4 cup milk • Salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste • 1 cup mayonnaise • 1 1/2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese • 1 1/3 cups fresh bread crumbs Melt butter. Add vegetables and cook five minutes. Stir in flour, then broth. Remove from heat and stir in milk, then mayonnaise and salt and pepper, to taste. Butter a 9-by-13-inch baking pan and add vegetables. Spread cheese on top, then bread crumbs. Drizzle with butter. Bake covered at 350 F for 30 minutes. Remove lid and bake for another 30 minutes or until bubbly and crisp on top. Allow to stand for 10 minutes before serving. Serves 6.

PASTA TOSSED WITH PEPPERS • 16 ounces penne or twist pasta • 2 T olive oil • 1 green and 1 red bell pepper, seeded and sliced • 1 large onion, sliced • 1 clove garlic, diced • 1/4 t black pepper • Salt, to taste • 1 T balsamic vinegar • 1 T basil ﬂakes Boil pasta as label directs. In a large sauce pot, heat olive oil and add peppers, onion, garlic, pepper and salt to taste. Cook until tender, about 10 minutes, stirring. Remove from heat and stir in balsamic vinegar and basil. Drain pasta, reserving 1/4 cup of the water and return pasta to saucepot. Add pepper mixture and pasta water and toss well. Serves 4.

GRILLED CHEESE PANINI • 10 1/2-inch slices Italian bread • 16 ounces Monterey Jack cheese slices • Butter, softened • 3 pears, cored and thinly sliced • Brown mustard Heat griddle or large skillet over medium-low heat, or a panini press. Assemble sandwiches with pears, two slices of cheese each and mustard. Butter bread on outside. Grill in a buttered skilled or press until cheese melts and bread is lightly browned. Turn and cook other side. Slices sandwiches on the diagonal and serve with sweet pickles. Serves 5.

The theme of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and National Nutrition Month this March is “Enjoy the Taste of Eating Right.” As spring approaches and ﬁtness routines move outdoors, remember that healthy snacks can fuel a workout and get you through the day. Becci Twombley, director of sports nutrition at the University of Southern California and ambassador for the American Pistachio Growers, suggests some snacking experiments: 1. Pick one proteinbased ingredient and think about different ways to eat it. Twombley often recommends pistachios as a performance snack because, calorie-for-calorie, pistachios pack more protein than most common snacks. As a snack ingredient, pistachios can be baked into homemade energy bars, sprinkled on yogurt or combined with dried fruit in a makeyour-own trail mix. 2. Work backwards. Think about your favorite snacks, and then experiment with different ways to add new proteins to that snack. Love the portability of sport bars, but not the lengthy ingredient list that can accompany some store-bought brands? Instead, make your own sport bars to control the ingredients in your own kitchen. 3. Get creative with the ultimate snack duo: protein and fiber. Rather than buying a traditional trail mix, make your own mix of pistachios and your favorite dried fruit. Mix pistachios with air popped popcorn for a satisfying and ﬁlling post-workout snack.
