ADDISON – Addison Trail High School senior Genesis Garcia, 17, resembles one of her favorite heroines, the Little Mermaid, in more ways than just her fiery red hair. Independent and resourceful like Ariel, Garcia’s leadership at school recently won her the Violet Richardson Award from Soroptimist International of Suburban Chicago, which honors girls who donate their time and energy to service projects. “I can’t do any sport at all,” Garcia said. “Everyone can have a special talent.” As president of Key Club and Best Buddies, a member of the Superintendent Student Advisory Board and a mentor to freshman students, Garcia demonstrates how many opportunities students can find to succeed outside of athletics. Senior year brings many decisions for high school students about their life after graduation, but Garcia makes a special effort to assist freshman students through a tutoring program called Second Helping and a mentoring program. “That was the whole reason we moved to Addison was because my parents wanted me to get a better education,” Garcia explained about her transition not only to high school, but from Chicago to Addison. “It’s a drastic change going from middle school to high school,” she said. Besides doing so much herself, she also motivates others

Dalvin has autism and inspired Garcia to join Best Buddies, which creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships between people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and those without disabilities. “I think that both students learn from each other,” Garcia said.

Dalvin is involved in theater club and enjoys art just like his sister and father. The Garcia brother-sister team also are involved in Addison Trail’s upcoming International Dance Festival. “We let anyone in the school who wants to, join,” Garcia said. Her list of activities goes on from her participation in LADIES, which raises funds and awareness for breast cancer each year through a Go Pink or Go Home project, to her involvement in year-long projects such as Teen Safe Driving and the Health and Wellness Program.

“She puts all of her effort into everything she does,” said Shannon Lange, a Key Club sponsor and Garcia’s freshman physical education teacher. As part of the Superintendent Student Advisory Board, Garcia also is involved in larger projects that expand beyond the Addison Trail community. “We’re trying to see how we can tackle the heroin problem in DuPage County right now,” Garcia said. The group of students, two from each grade level, offer their input to District 88 Superintendent Scott Helton. She said some ideas have involved bringing high school mentors

into middle schools to talk about the dangers of heroin. Growing up, Garcia was always encouraged to pursue a prestigious career such as medicine or law by her mother’s Guatemalan side of the family, she said, but her more laidback Mexican father supports her artistic side. “Those two different environments and ideas have shaped me as a person,” Garcia said. Not one to settle for choosing one opportunity over the other when she’s capable of doing both, Garcia plans to study psychology, specifically art therapy. While she’s still waiting to hear back from a few schools before she chooses a college, she’s thankful for the Violet Richardson Award to help fund her studies. The local level award results in a $250 scholarship, but Garcia could win larger awards if her application proceeds through other levels of Soroptimist International to the ultimate $2,500 scholarship with a matching donation to a charity of her choice. “She’s given a lot of herself,” said Diane Kegley, president of Soroptimist International of Suburban Chicago.

Indian Trail reopens after water main break

ADDISON – Indian Trail Junior High School reopened Wednesday after a water main break closed the school Tuesday. District 4 Facilities Engineering Manager Abe Singh said an 8-inch water main line that had settled broke in the school parking lot. The building was not damaged, but some asphalt will need to be repaired in the spring. Singh explained that the extreme cold has pushed frost deep in the ground and probably put pressure on the weak spot of the water main. “It’s my understanding that there have been quite a few as of late,” Singh said about water

mgrigaliunas@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – In just a few months, a $1.4 million nursing simulation center will open for Elmhurst College students and hospital staff at Elmhurst Memorial Hospital. “We’re modeling the future health care by creating this partnership,” said Julie Hoff, director of the Deicke Center for Nursing Education. with complications. Steberg also mentioned how, more and more, nurses are working outside of the hospital setting. A home care lab will include a living room and residential bathroom where students can practice conducting a well-baby visit or adapting a home for someone with a disability. A control room hidden behind one-way mirrors will allow directors to reprogram and change a simulated patient’s condition without students knowing and create near-to-life situations. An observation room will allow students not participating in simulations to observe from screens in the room as well as their cell phones and laptops. Bloody Mary bandmates Rickee Divine, 16, of Carol Stream, Kat Cannons, 17, of Downers Grove and Ana Apollo, 17, and Hollie Wood, 14, both of Elmhurst, released their first CD, “Coming of Age,” last year with Dark Star Records and the Sony label. MoJoe’s in Joliet will host part of Reverbnation’s “Women in Rock” Battle of the Bands on Saturday. Bloody Mary will battle for the opportunity to open the Chicago stop of Revolver Magazine’s Hottest Chicks in Hard Rock Tour on March 1 at MoJoe’s. The March 1 show will feature Sick Puppies, Lacuna Coil, Eyes to Kill and Cilver. Bloody Mary has been playing around Chicago and the Midwest since 2010, playing

Students and instructors can use the conference room as a classroom for debriefing following exercises. “That’s the beauty of it.” Hoff said. “It’s just a lot more space that is more usable [and] flexible.” Elmhurst College nursing students use simulators now, but they are limited by space, Hoff said. Students won’t have those same limitations at the center. “To be able to have new nurses working in a simulation lab is very beneficial,” Steberg said of recent nursing graduates working at the hospital. She also noted the night shift, which often has limited resources, will benefit from the simulation lab. “I’m most excited about our ability to work with the low-volume, high-paced [emergency situations],” Steberg said. She explained that simula-

While the hospital experiences emergencies, Steberg said not every nurse or physician run into them every day. Simulations also provide the chance to observe a group dynamic in a high-stress situation. Both students and staff will begin using the simulation center in the fall, but both Hoff and Steberg are excited about the two institutions working together. Steberg said the hospital can benefit from Elmhurst College research, and students can benefit from the hospital’s help when finding students placements in the area. “As leaders, we’re leveraging each other’s resources,” Hoff said.

Monkeys trained to be helping hands My friend, Angel, told me the other day, “I want a monkey.” I asked what he was talking about and he proceeded to tell me the story of Helping Hands: Monkey Helpers (monkeyhelpers. org), a nonprofit agency from Cambridge, Mass. Capuchin monkeys are trained from birth to perform small tasks to help people with spinal injuries or, like Angel, who suffer from muscular dystrophy. Angel’s disease has weakened him to a point where he has lost his ability to walk, struggles to sit up without help, and can barely lift his arms to COMMUNITY open a drawer. What he VOICE can do, once he makes it to Bruce his wheelchair, is type on a computer. Via computer, Flowers Angel is taking classes online to become a medical coder for insurance companies. He also has a small computer repair business where he installs software for customers and fixes monitors, keyboards and CPUs. What he has difficulty doing is turning pages, scratching itches, retrieving dropped objects and repositioning his legs on a wheelchair. A pair of helping hands, even from a monkey, would be great benefit to Angel. After reading their website, I learned that the 6- to 8-pound monkeys attend Monkey College for about three to five years where they are trained in an increasing complexity of tasks. They first start in a cubicle with a trainer to learn how to be rewarded for accomplishing a task. The first reward is a ringing bell followed by a lick of peanut butter. At the end of “cubicle” training, the reward has become a verbal praise like “good boy/girl.” The next phase of training involves more complex tasks like opening bottles or turning on lights using a laser pointer to direct their action. The monkeys are also introduced to wheelchairs in this phase. The last training room is a homelike room called the “apartment.” It contains real appliances, TVs and electronics that the monkeys learn to operate with instruction. It is a fascinating concept, and Angel has already sent his first application to be considered for a trial run with the monkey. My thought, however, is “who is going to take care of the monkey?” With one caretaker already helping Angel, will there be double-duty, literally, with taking care of the monkey also? I hope not, and his mother supports the idea of a helper monkey in the house.

I am a Lemont resident and I’m calling about a serious accident that might be developing at Walker Road and McCarthy Road. Right now, the six-member Lemont Village Board and the mayor, Mr. Brian Reaves, are deciding on whether they (and only they) should obligate the Lemont taxpayers to be responsible for a sports complex that is estimated to cost $21 million, with finance costs of up to $18 million. They are doing so after they found a private source of funding, which allowed them to legally deny any binding input from the residents and voters of Lemont. This means that out of the more than 16,000 residents of Lemont, only seven people have a voice in approving a high-risk project ... Many of us in Lemont have complained about this maneuver and have been repeatedly told by the Lemont board and mayor, “You elected us, and that means that we can do what we want,” and, “If you don’t like what we’re doing, then vote us out next election.” This is not how a representative democracy is supposed to work and, besides, they can do a lot of damage in the next three years. Please help us get our right to vote on this project by publicizing our plight.

The goal is to raise $100,000 to allow the home roughly five months to work on a longterm financial plan. Roughly 70 percent of the total operating cost comes from donations and fundraising. Located in the recently renovated McAninch Arts Center, the construction of the gallery was funded through a $700,000 donation made by Carney before he died from a rare brain disorder in July 2013 at age 74. Anderson will have to upgrade that license to A/Fuel before she can compete in the NHRA’s high speed class. With the encouragement and help of her father and family friend, Dave Daunheimer, the owner of Competition Fabrications in Maple Park, Anderson set out to build her own A/Fuel dragster four years ago. “I had to build my own because the cars are so expensive – it wasn’t really possible any other way,” she said. “I have a lot of respect for the

sport because I had a hand in building everything.” Anderson, who graduated earlier this month from Elmhurst College with dual majors in supply chain management and economics, is currently seeking marketing sponsors to help fund her dream of racing on the professional level in the NHRA Drag Racing Series. With an outline of her marketing plan in place, Anderson turned to Kelly Cunningham, associate professor of business and MBA program director at Elmhurst College. Cunningham, who taught Anderson in a strategic management class, said was unaware of Anderson’s interest in auto racing.

“She brought me her sponsorship plan and I was just fascinated with her whole story,” Cunningham said. “She is modest, but very ambitious and determined to succeed.” Cunningham suggested that once the dragster is complete, that Anderson take the finished product directly to potential sponsors. “It’s important to show what the sponsor will receive for their money– where their label would go on the car of uniform,” he said. Females – rapidly becoming more prevalent in the sport – are the most marketable drivers because men, women and children are all interested in watching their progression, Anderson said. Still, Anderson believes she is unique even among the ladies. “What sets me apart from the other women is that I work on cars,” she said. “I built my own race car and not many drivers do that, especially at the professional level.” Climbing into a dragster and strapping in, nerves begin to set in for Anderson, but once the engine starts, there is a strange calming effect, she said. “Even though it’s really loud around you, it’s calming in a way,” she said. “The tires burn out, and it’s exhilarating after that.”

VILLA PARK – Before reaching speeds in excess of 200 mph, it’s vital to clear the mind of distractions, aspiring drag racer Marina Anderson said. “You can’t bring the stresses of life into the race car because it can be dangerous,” said Anderson, a Villa Park resident Marina and a recent El- Anderson mhurst College graduate. “You have to clear your head and feel what the car is doing.” Anderson, 21, took a serious interest in the sport of drag racing as a teenager, when she began working with her father, Scott, the crew chief for Frantic Fueler, a successful nostalgia front-engine dragster. To Anderson, the sport is a thrilling mix of entertainment and really fast cars. “There’s a lot of adrenaline – even when you’re just watching,” she said. “The ground shakes and the smell of nitromethane makes even the biggest men cry.” For the past four years, Anderson has been working hard to build her own 4,000-horsepower rear-engine dragster. She plans to debut her vehicle next month at the annual Detroit Autorama show, and from there, the goal is to qualify for the National Hot Rod Association A/Fuel, the highspeed class for the governing

Area legislators try to combat heroin epidemic By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com A group of local House Republicans announced Thursday a new package of legislation aimed at curbing, treating and preventing the state’s heroin problem. The seven bills were announced in the DuPage County Judicial Office facility. House Republican Leader Jim Durkin, R-Western Springs, said the news conference’s location was important. Last year, there were a record 46 fatal heroin overdoses in DuPage County and Durkin called the area “ground zero” in the fight against heroin. “There’s no more greater mission that we have in Springfield as state representatives [than] to try to save lives and protect families, particularly from this epidemic which has grown throughout the state of Illinois – and mainly in this DuPage County region,” he said. Combating the growing heroin problem in the county would take time, partnerships, education and rehabilitation, said Rep. Dennis Reboletti, R-Elmhurst. The bills, which Reboletti said he hoped would be introduced separately to House committees in March, cover a wide range of issues. First, the plan would create a pilot program in DuPage County to create a secure treatment facility in what was once the county’s 40-bed youth home. It would serve as a last-chance program for low-level offenders on probation and young individuals who would otherwise go to prison, Reboletti said. He said the program could cut down the number of nonviolent offenders in the state correctional system and help prevent repeat offenders by treating the addiction. Reboletti said funding and administrating were still unclear but suggested at least part of the funding could come from taxes collected from medicinal marijuana. The 7 percent tax is dedicated to helping prevent crime and recidivism, a focus Reboletti called a “perfect fit.” Another bill would extend the RICO laws in the state, which allow for prosecutors to pursue civil claims against in-

The laws were a “huge asset” and used in last year’s bust of 31 people involved in a heroin ring, State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said. The legislation asks lawmakers to extend the sunset date to 2022, five years past its current expiration date. The package also includes bills that require county health departments to track and report the number of drug overdose deaths to the state, enhance penalties for patients receiving controlled substances from multiple doctors, begin an education initiative to raise awareness on the state’s “Good Samaritan” law, commission pamphlets educating holders of opiate prescriptions about their dangers and increase the penalties for selling and using the drug krokodil, a heroin alternative, to be on par with those for heroin. Reboletti said that he believed that the legislation focused mainly on rehabilitation and education. “Instead of putting people into prison, we’re offering some alternatives here and recognizing that it’s an addiction, it’s not necessarily criminal activity,” he said. “And if we can beat the addiction portion, recidivism rates are going to go down … we’re going to save lives and we’re going to save taxpayer dollars.”

Berwyn’s Wishbone spreads Southern charm BERWYN – Several months before visiting Wishbone last week, I went to a market and bought everything I needed to make shrimp and grits. Unfortunately, after that grocery stop and each subsequent trip, I’ve managed to eat all the bacon before I actually get around to making the dish, and the shrimp are still waiting in the freezer. So when I saw the Southern favorite on the menu at Wishbone, I ordered it as an appetizer without hesitation. I’m happy I did; my craving now can rest easy. The creamy, cheesy grits supporting plump shrimp, bacon, mushrooms, white wine and scallions was a personal favorite when my companion and I ate at Wishbone’s pop-up location, connected to Olive or Twist Martini Bar in Berwyn. The shrimp was cooked perfectly, retaining some snap, and the bites of bacon stayed crispy – never an easy trick. The popular Chicago barbecue joint returned to Berwyn this winter on a trial run through March. If it catches on, people will have a new home base for fried chicken, pulled pork, beef brisket, crab cakes, catfish, rainbow trout and other downhome belly-pleasers. The new spot sits in Berwyn’s charming Depot District, along with neighboring bars, restaurants, gift shops and a comedy club. During our visit, my companion and I sat at a table with a nice view through the large picture window. Out front, trains rolled by to create a fun atmosphere – they could be seen but not heard. And with exposed brick walls and ductwork, along with other trendy but warm interior design elements, the restaurant manages to conjure both a Southern and urban feel. VILLA PARK – Being a good 3-point shooter takes practice, and a lot of it. Addison Trail’s Joe Kurucar has put in the practice time to become a top shooter, and it has paid off for the Blazers this season. Kurucar’s latest strong performance was a 16-point outburst at Willowbrook on Tuesday. His team-high point total helped the Blazers to a 4839 win against their District 88 rivals. “Joe can shoot,” AT coach Brendan Lyons said. “He’s started to develop [the rest of his game] a little bit. He had a couple nice moves to the basket [against Willowbrook].” The 6-foot-3 senior guard has a long frame but doesn’t play much in the paint. Instead, he uses his height advantage over most guards to help him get a better look at the basket from the perimeter. Kurucar hasn’t always been a shoot-first type of player, but he has worked hard to develop that part of his game. “When I was little I used to drive a lot, but from like freshman year on I just started shooting,” Kurucar said. “Every day in summer I would shoot. I just go out there and shoot.” In addition to Kurucar’s 16 points, Joe Villasenor scored 13 for the Blazers (11-14, 6-4 West Suburban Gold). Both players stepped up in the scoring category while leading scorer James Pupillo was held to just four points and left the game in the fourth quarter after taking an elbow that gave him a bloody nose.

After dropping many close games earlier in the season, the Blazers weren’t concerned with style points against the Warriors. All that mattered was the win. “I don’t know if I would exactly call it entertaining from a spectator standpoint, but two teams were battling out there,” Lyons said. “At least we came out with the ‘W’ after the game. You try to stress the positive.” The Blazers have won the last four games they’ve played in that have been decided by single digits. This is after the team had already lost four games by two points or less this season. “At the beginning of the year we lost a lot of those close games, but we’re sticking in them now,” Kurucar said.

Local NASCAR team owner follows road to success By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com Anthony Marlowe’s love of cars and racing was born on Archer Avenue, the famous street that cuts a swath through Chicago’s southside and the city’s southwest suburbs. “I’ve been a lifelong racing fan since back in the day running cars up and down Archer Avenue,” Marlowe said. “I’ve always had an affinity for it.” Now a successful businessman, Marlowe was able to turn his love into a reality as he became a minority owner with Swan Racing in January. Swan Racing, which is based in Statesville, N.C., has two cars that compete in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, No. 26 Cole Whitt and No. 30 Parker Kligerman. As the NASCAR season starts Sunday with the Daytona 500, Marlowe will be one of hundreds of thousands of people in attendance as he watches Whitt and Kligerman compete in the race, but for him, it will be all business, which coincidentally is how he became a NASCAR owner. After graduating from Lyons Township High School, Marlowe moved to Iowa City, Iowa, to go to college before he quickly realized it wasn’t for him. “I didn’t last very long,” he said. “I started working for a company called MCI, and they asked me to run their sales team in Arlington, Va. so I did that for a few years. How many 19-year olds get to be a manager and get that kind of experience.” MCI brought Marlowe back to Iowa City in 2001. Two years later, he co-founded TMone, a domestic business process outsourcing firm that has since spread to four locations, employs more than 1,000 people and has been named one of Inc. Magazine’s fastest growing private companies seven years in a row. He became a NASCAR team sponsor in 2011 before selling TMone last year. He is still president of the company. His business success has allowed him to achieve the dream many sports fans harbor. “I always thought one day I’d like to be part of [owning a

What made you jump into your coach’s arms after winning the sectional championship match? I almost didn’t make it

[to state] last year. Being in that match to get to the third place match and almost not winning but then winning, I jumped into his arms last year, too. It was so exciting to get this far and do something.

Everyone is usually happy just to qualify for state, but does it mean more to win the sectional? It puts me in a better place than it did last year. With me taking fourth last year and having to face the No. 1 kid in state [Hinsdale Central’s Brian Allen], now I’m in a better spot to meet him later.

What is your goal at state? My goal is to win and I’m going to do anything to do it. I think I got a pretty good shot.

I think I’m pretty good this year and I’ll wrestle really well.” Last year, Carson won a regional title and made it to the sectional semifinals, giving himself two chances to pick up the decisive victory that would have sent him to state.
