In any color, the rose is always the most popular purchase year round. “Valentine’s Day, it’s a little bit tricky,” Bollmann said. The shop gets roses from Ecuador, where the weather is better, but transporting them requires special care. “You’ve got to wrap them up like babies,” Bollmann said. Valentine’s is one of his busiest holidays, but Mother’s Day, Christmas and Thanksgiving are still big in the business. What’s really changed over the past few decades is the decline in everyday flower purchases just because. “Weddings are a lot of fun,” he said. Even with Pinterest fans always presenting their readymade ideas, Bollmann enjoys

ter’s and granddaughter’s weddings of a long-time customer. “We have loyal customers,” Bollmann said. While the store still gets visitors, many of its orders come in through the store’s website. Addison Floral is a member of Teleflora, which fills orders – even internationally – with local florists like Bollmann. In addition, Bollmann is a member of Metro Chicago Florist Delivery Co-Op. The 26-member group meets six mornings a week in Chica-
go and exchanges deliveries. This way, Bollmann’s flowers can be delivered to the loop or Deerfield and he delivers orders from other shops that are going to Addison. In the midst of the plethora of colors, textures and Bollmann’s creative spirit, the florist still thinks the flower business has a simple message at its core, no matter the occasion. “People don’t realize how much joy a bouquet of flowers can bring,” he said.

ADDISON – In the midst of the thick blanket of snow covering Addison and temperatures that seem more frequently below zero than above, Larry Bollmann has created a small oasis on Lake Street. “It’s got to be one of the better jobs especially with this winter,” Bollmann said. The scent of fresh flowers fills the warm store front of Addison Floral, which Bollmann, opened nearly 40 years ago. His passion for floral design began during a high school class where he started working in a greenhouse. He then decided to pursue his newfound passion at the American Floral Arts School. He shares his passion with Addison Trail High School and the community every year with an annual flower show, which funds the school’s horticultural program and scholarships. After almost 40 years at the store he owns with his wife, Cathy, Bollmann’s favorite part is still designing. “Flowers say so much,” he said. “They have their own language.” He explained how he matches flowers for specific occa-

Bond set at $2.5M for man charged in fatal shooting SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA BENSENVILLE – A 20-yearold Bellwood man accused in the fatal shooting of a Bensenville store clerk last month is being held on $2.5 million bond, while the gunman is still at large, according to media re- Kenneth Bardlett ports. Kenneth Bardlett, 20, of 49th Avenue, Bellwood, has been charged with one count of first-degree murder for the Jan. 19 slaying of Husein Saghir at Sam’s Tobacco and Foodmart in Bensenville, ac-
cording to a news release from DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Bensenville Chief of Police Frank Kosman. Prosecutors would not release details about Bardlett’s arrest because of the ongoing search for the other man involved in Saghir’s killing, but during Bardlett’s bond hearing Wednesday, prosecutors said Bardlett confessed to police and told them what he had done with the clothing he wore during the attempted robbery, according to media reports. Bardlett served a boot camp sentence on a weapons charge in Cook County, prosecutors said in reports. He was released from state
prison on parole in July 2012 after being arrested in 2011 for possession of a firearm by a gang member, according to Illinois Department of Corrections records. Late last week, the Bensenville Police Department announced a $10,000 reward for information leading to the identification, arrest, prosecution and conviction of the people responsible for the fatal shooting. It is not yet clear if the reward played a role in the arrest. There’s also no indication whether police have information about the second suspect who appears in the store’s surveillance video. The video shows Saghir, 36,
of Chicago, and another store employee exiting the store when they were confronted by two men. During a brief struggle, one of the men shot at Saghir before they both fled on foot east bound from the store. It’s not clear if police believe Bardlett was the shooter. Officers responded to the scene and found Saghir on the ground in front of the store. He was taken to the Elmhurst Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Both offenders are described as black men, 17 to 22 years of age, 5-foot, 3-inches to 5-foot, 5-inches tall, clean shaven and between 130 to 150 pounds. The shooter was wearing a red or maroon

The second offender was wearing a black hoodie with a front logo on it having a large, almost chest width rectangular, white background with black cursive-style writing on it believed to be a Mossimo logo. A vehicle is observed on video leaving the drive at the east side of the building shortly thereafter. It is suspected that the offenders entered and fled in the van east bound from the scene. The van is believed to be a light colored, tan, beige, or silver/gray, 2001 to 2003 Ford Windstar.

Owens was formally indicted on the weapons charge Jan. 30, the day before sending the bloody photos to his wife. The order of protection was renewed for a second time Monday and his visitation rights

Chamberlain College reopens

ADDISON – Chamberlain College of Nursing in Addison reopened Tuesday for classes after threats led administrators to cancel all Chicago-area classes Monday. An email from the DeVry Education Group stated two leaders of the Chamberlain campus in Addison received an email threat Sunday suggesting there would be several “explosions” set off at unspecified locations throughout the day Monday. After consulting local law enforcement officials, all
Chicago area locations were closed as a precautionary measure, stated the email. Authorities then began an immediate investigation to identify the responsible person or persons. Each Chicago area campus was inspected and/or swept with explosive detection canine teams for anything suspicious or potentially harmful. Nothing of an unusual nature was found at any of the Chicago campuses and both DeVry University and Chamberlain College of Nursing Chicago area locations were reopened Tuesday, according to the email.

BENSENVILLE – An addition at Tioga School is almost complete, but it’s not completely new. As a way of honoring history, one of the walls in the new cafeteria features an arch and bricks from Chippewa School, which was located on the same block and recently demolished, according to a District 2 news release. The entire addition, which includes a classroom wing and bridge connecting it to the existing structure, will be ready for students next school year. The old Tioga School at 313 W. Memorial Board in Bensenville, will be vacated at the end of the school year. Artifacts from the old Tioga School will also be preserved and

A Securities Industry and Financial Markets program administered by Econ Illinois, The Stock Market Game aims to help students learn financial literacy. Through the game, students manage a hypothetical $100,000 online portfolio and invest in stocks, bonds and mutual funds, learning about global markets, long-term saving and investing, according to a District 88 news release. 7 men indicted in cellphone store armed robberies SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA Seven defendants were indicted on federal charges for their roles in a series of six cell phone store armed robberies last year that extended from suburban Chicago, including Addison and Woodridge, to Indiana and downstate Illinois. Eric Rogers, 39, of Hazel Crest and Eric Curtis, 29, of Park Forest were charged in December after a cellphone store in Woodridge was robbed, according to a news release from the United States Attorney’s Office Northern District of Illinois. The pair allegedly directed a robbery conspiracy by selecting the stores that were robbed, recruiting their co-defendants to participate in the robberies, providing them with firearms and other equipment and paying them to commit armed robbery at their direction. Rogers and Curtis were each charged with one count of robbery conspiracy, three
counts of robbery and two counts of brandishing firearms. Curtis was also charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm, which carries a maximum 10-year sentence. Both are being held in federal custody without bond. A federal grand jury indicted the other five defendants Feb. 6. Marcus Harris, 20, of Chicago, Daniel Wright, 28, of Chicago, Tony Johnson, 20 of Harvey, and Lavell Hughes, 41, of Gary were charged with one count each of robbery and brandishing a firearm. Andre Wadlington-Anthony, 27, of Harvey was charged with two counts of each of those charges, according to the release. The Norridge robbery included about 100 phones and tablet computers valued about $54,000. The seven defendants, in various combinations, allegedly committed armed robberies

Joining forces to boost youth mentoring The impact one person can have on another, especially that of a caring adult on the life of a vulnerable youth, can last a lifetime. As coordinator of the MetroMentors program at Metropolitan Family Services DuPage, my job is to match such mentors and mentees. Effective mentoring relationships can help increase children’s self-esteem, social competence, academic achievement and positive life choices. And mentors often find they gain much by giving their time, attention and support. Though many stories have been told about the benefits of mentoring, another story that should be shared is about the COMMUNITY organizational partnerships VOICE that are helping programs Marsha such as MetroMentors survive Ndoko and grow. In our case, joining forces with local school entities such as District 45 and organizations such as Parkview Community Church in Glen Ellyn has been a recipe for success. MetroMentors provides weekly mentoring opportunities in schools by working with various DuPage school districts, including District 45. Through Kathy Gerber, the guidance counselor at Jefferson Middle School, we at MetroMentors discovered that Parkview was interested in deepening its mentoring outreach. Steve King, worship arts pastor at Parkview Community Church, said: “As we considered the requirements of starting up a mentoring program with the District 45 schools, we knew there were areas of expertise we were not qualified to address, such as the administration, screening, oversight and coordination between the schools, students and mentors. MetroMentors has filled that role with Parkview and District 45. The result has been a partnership that maximizes our ability to focus on recruiting and engaging mentors with students at the schools.” As a result of the partnership, on average, students with mentors saw a 70 percent increase in academic performance, an 82 percent improvement in social or emotional challenges, an 85 percent improvement in learning, as well as performance increases in a number of other areas. MetroMentors greatly appreciates the support of Parkview Community Church, District 45, other participating school districts and other partners who are helping to support mentoring services and benefit the greater DuPage community. MetroMentors always has a demand for mentors, especially adult males and volunteers who can donate time during the school day. I just read in Suburban Life this week about the Downers Grove disposal program for drugs, which is wonderful. I just want people to be aware of the fact that, and I am a Downers Grove residence, for years at the Lisle police station, you’ve been able to walk in and put your drugs in a box without making an appointment and sometimes that may be more convenient. So anyhow, I just want everybody to know about it. I think it’s wonderful Downers Grove is finally offering this program. But I think it would be easier for a lot of people if they don’t have to make an appointment, they can just drop their drugs off, which I’ve been doing for years.

mpiechalak@shawmedia.com LOMBARD – For Tom Brauer, co-leader of a group from Peace Lutheran Church that recently returned from a mission trip to Honduras, traveling to impoverished areas to provide healthcare is an impactful experience that often leads to “divine appointments.” A divine appointment is an experience in which an individual relates directly to another human being and is able to offer help or advice, said Brauer, of Wheaton. “It’s a pretty amazing thing when these people that live 2,200 miles apart do share common experiences in life and can help one another,” Brauer said. The Lombard church sent about 50 people to Tegucigalpa, Honduras, last month as part of World Gospel Outreach, a nonprofit organization that serves the poor in Tegucigalpa and “seeks to physically and spiritually touch them with the love of Jesus Christ,” according to the organization’s website. Tegucigalpa is the capital of Honduras, with a population of 1.12 million. “We set up medical clinics in different churches around the city and provide medical help for them,” said Brauer, who has been on 18 trips in the past 14 years. During the recent trip, the volunteers saw 5,326 patients, Brauer said. Mary Steinbach of Elm-

hurst has attended 12 trips to Honduras through World Gospel Outreach including the most recent trip. Bringing medical, dental and optical aid to the Honduran people is one goal for the mission trips, she said. The group also provides concrete floors for families living in the dirt and offers to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with those interested, Steinbach said. “I’m thankful for the many comforts I’ve come home to, and I have a greater appreciation for my fellow team members as we grew closer through the week,” she said. Peace Lutheran Church Pastor Marty Hufford, who has been on two trips, said it’s an incredible way to serve those less fortunate. “People will walk for hours to go to one of the stations because they have no health care and they have needs,” Hufford said. The overall mission of the trips, as written in scripture, is to serve those in need, Hufford said. “Spiritually, we want to think of Matthew 25,” Hufford said. “We want to take that very seriously here in our local community and around the world.”

Lizzadro exhibits Smithsonian pieces By MARI GRIGALIUNAS mgrigaliunas@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – They say diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but Dorothy Asher took explicit care to look for other gem stones when cultivating the Lizzadro Museum’s current “Modern Designer Jewelry from the Smithsonian” exhibit. “I looked for things that were showy,” Asher said. She avoided the “big four” as she called them, namely diamonds, emeralds, rubies and sapphires in general. Instead, she looked for large pieces with colorful gems through more than 100 works available from the Smithsonian Gem Collection. “The museum is a Smithsonian affiliate, so we are able to work closely with the curators,” Asher said. After about six months, she’d assembled a collection of 11 designer pieces that focused on American gem stones. A few diamonds and emeralds made their way into the exhibit next to an oversized turquoise Najavo bracelet and a pearl ring. “There’s a big departure from just the jewelry store jewelry,” Asher said. Ton of Fun about more than weight loss By MARI GRIGALIUNAS mgrigaliunas@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – With the new year’s rush of inspiration gone and all of those heart-shaped chocolates breaking down wills, members of the Ton of Fun Weight Loss Challenge haven’t given up on their health goals. “We’ve got a really great group of people participating,” said Jillian Wiederer, training program coordinator from Fleet Feet, Inc. Fleet Feet Sports Elmhurst started the 12-week program with 80 participants Jan. 2 with the goal to lose a ton of weight, or 2,000 pounds, among all participants in the Chicago area. The Elmhurst store also is the frontrunner in a contest with the Bloomington store to see which store’s team can lose the biggest percentage of its body weight. About half way through the program, the Elmhurst Fleet Feet Sports team has lost a total of 396 pounds, or 2.5 percent of its combined body weight. “It’s more about getting healthier than losing weight,” Kendra Pasek of Westchester said. She and her husband Andy have been doing the program together after Andy, who works in Elmhurst, heard of the challenge. While there are a gift certificates for those who lose a certain percentage of their body weight at defined benchmarks, participants share motivation, recipes and workouts on a private Facebook page. “I would just say that it’s a great community,” Andy Pasek said. Each participant set individual goals. In addition to the community aspect, Fleet Feet hosts a weigh-in every Thursday and then gives participants tips or activities to help accomplish their goals. Knippen values her health and felt she should get back to the good habits she’s let go over time. “I volunteer full time in an industry that focuses on health,” Knippen said. Knippen said with a busy schedule it’s always easy to heat up a frozen dinner when on the run, but Ton of Fun is motivating her to eat more fruits and vegetables. The weekly weigh-ins and the Facebook page keep her accountable. When she sees someone else in the group post their workout or what they made for dinner, she’s reminded to follow suit.

“It is all stuff that I really knew before, but I’ve just gotten off track,” Knippen said. Both Knippen and the Paseks also are training for May races. Knippen will run the Fleet Feet Sports Soldier Field 10 Mile, and the Paseks are preparing for the Tough Mudder. The Paseks have turned their Thursday night visits to Fleet Feet into more than just a weigh-in. “We’ve been using it as a date night,” Kendra Pasek said. After the weigh-in, they usually have a healthy meal out or buy groceries to cook at
home while Kendra’s parents watch their children. For Wiederer, the reward is working with each person on individual challenges, whether it’s coming up with a plan for what to eat at lunch or what exercises they may want to try. “It’s really awesome to weigh people, type in their numbers and see the weight that they’ve lost,” Wiederer said. In addition to holding her accountable, the Ton of Fun program is accessible, Knippen said. “There’s no reason why anybody can’t do this.”

Santarelli, who was Dominic Capone’s long-time friend, was hired at the restaurant on the show’s first episode. “Today, we lost our friend and cast member to liver cancer. Madeleine Santarelli you will be missed by us. Love you,� Dominic Capone wrote

LOMBARD – Gianorio’s Pizza and Pasta, 434 S. Main St. in Lombard, will hold a fundraiser from 3 to 9 p.m. Feb. 26 to collect money for the Edwin F. Deicke Home, which is in jeopardy of closing its doors after 31 years in town. Gianorio’s will donate 10 percent of sales during the fundraiser when presented with a “Help Save the Deicke Home� flier. The private residential home, 1005 E. Division St., for adults with developmental disabilities an-
nounced recently that it will close March 31 if it cannot secure enough funding to remain open. It costs about $20,000 a month to run the home, according to Bruce Thompson, director for the home. The goal is to raise $100,000 to allow the home roughly five months to work on a longterm financial plan. Roughly 70 percent of the total operating cost comes from donations and fundraising. Customers must present a flier to have 10 percent of their bill donated to the home.

the beauty of jewelry sold in most stores, she really liked the uniqueness of many of the items she handpicked. One of her favorites is the award-winning “South Sea Glow,” designed by Adam Neeley. Three golden South Sea cultured pearls and two white Akoya cultured pearls are set in hand-fabricated Elektra Gold, transitioning from 24-karat yellow gold to white gold. Asher explained not only are the pieces beautiful, but they show a wide variety. Another of her favorites is an emerald designed by Julius Cohen around 1965. “If you didn’t know any better, you would say that necklace could be designed and worn today,” Asher said. Geologist Sara Kurth’s favorite piece is called “Nautilus” and resembles the spiral shape of a sea shell. “It just shows you what else can be done with stone,”

Kurth said. Raised in Glen Ellyn, Kurth remembers visiting the museum as a child. In fifth grade, she decided to be a scientist, but it wasn’t until college that she found her passion for geology. “I think it’s modern,” Kurth said about the jewelry exhibit in comparison to some of the other museum works. Grandaughter of the museum’s executive director, Asher grew up surrounded by stones. Her grandfather John Lizzadro, an avid lapidary hobbyist and collector, opened the museum in 1972. Today, Asher and Lizzadro are the most involved family members, and while Asher had an interest in lapidary art from a young age, she didn’t start out as the museum director she is today. “I’m here because I love the creativity and the job,” said Asher, a gemologist. In addition to the Smithsonian jewelry exhibit, the Lizzadro will hold an earring workshop Saturday for those

‘Doubtful Abbey’ marks 10 years of mystery theatre By MARI GRIGALIUNAS mgrigaliunas@shawmedia.com Most people wouldn’t expect a cozy community like Elmhurst to be the site of heinous crimes, but every year for the last decade, someone is murdered right around this time of year. The GreenMan Theatre Troupe’s annual mystery dinner theatre production is celebrating it’s 10th anniversary this year with a birthday party for Dowager Duchess, Lady Dolores Fussworthy. “It’s very immediate theatre,” said Carolyn Thomas-Davidoff, director and writer of “Doubtful Abbey: Murder and Mayhem at Fussworthy Masion.” Thomas-Davidoff worked on the lighting for the troupe’s very first mystery dinner, “The Boardwalk Melody Hour Murders,” in 2004 and has been involved ever since. “When we started, we didn’t know if we were going to be able to continue,” said David Soria, the theatre’s artistic director. The first mystery dinner was meant to be a one-time fundraiser to get the new community theatre off the ground, but the audience demanded more. The annual production still functions as a fundraiser, which Soria said is essential to GreenMan. Because the annual event is a fundraiser, an original script saves the theatre money on royalties, but it’s also exciting for cast members like Ashley Thompson of Roselle. In her second production with GreenMan, Thompson said her favorite part about the troupe is the closeness of the cast and crew. “I see these great friendships and relationships being made,” said Soria, who met his wife, Katie, a member of the Doubtful Abbey cast, at a past show. Part of community theatre’s appeal, for many involved, is the amount of behind-thescenes work that goes into each performance. “They have to turn their lives upside down to be able to

Shazad Mehta works at his family business, Mehta Motors, in Elmhurst, but lives in Chicago. Everyone’s circumstances are different, but everyone gives many hours to each production. “I’ve always kind of been the ham of the family,” said Mehta, an Elmhurst native who will be performing in his ninth GreenMan production this season. Thomas-Davidoff remembers Mehta’s first audition just before she was ready to call it quits after a couple of hours without a standout performance. “To me, the play just took off at that point,” she said of Mehta’s audition. The casting call makes all the differencem said Thomas-Davidoff. The Western Springs teacher spends most of her summer writing or co-writing the murder mysteries, but during her winter break she rewrites the script after meeting the cast. Once, she even created an entirely new character for an actress who came to a casting call. As much as she enjoys writing the script, Thomas-Davidoff also likes how the dinner theatre setting gives the cast the opportunity to involve the audience. mingles with the audience during a cocktail hour, and during the performance, characters often make their way between tables and involve audience members in the show. “You can imagine that there’s some people who just want to watch the play, and then there are other people who are eager to have the cast members approach them,” Thomas-Davidoff said. Whether audience members want to observe or get into the act, for first-time GreenMan cast member Kitty Mortland of Chicago, the accessibility of community theatre is what makes it special. “We’re all here enjoying an evening of art together,” Mortland said.

Thai Pot stirs affection for traditional cuisine DOWNERS GROVE – Thai fare has become more commonplace over the years, and, like many other adopted cuisines, often more Americanized. Breading, cream, sugary sauces and less traditional spices frequently are incorporated. Thai Pot seems to resist that temptation, offering authentic flavors and food, to good result. During my first visit to the restaurant, I stopped by for lunch. Tucked into a strip mall in Downers Grove, the storefront eatery has a bright, appealingly decorated interior. The full menu is not available midday, when the restaurant focuses on a selection of weekday lunch specials, which are fairly diverse and very well priced. For just under $8, you get soup, the appetizer of the day and a well-portioned entree. The meal started with a simple yet delicious chicken and jasmine rice soup. It reminded me of my mom’s best chicken noodle, but the jasmine and a smattering of other Thai spices gave it an extra layer of savory that really set it apart. All the components were cooked well, and the broth had an almost buttery texture. The aromatic fish sauce and spices in the red curry with tofu, which usually are muted by lots of coconut sauce, wafted my way as the server approached the table. The emphasis was on the spicy chili sauce in the curry, a dish overflowing with veggies and tofu. The tofu itself melted in my
mouth. It was boiled, not fried, giving it an eggy texture. After the satisfying lunch, I was curious to check out the full menu, and followed up another day with a dinner visit. I started with an order of Shrimp Cigars – admittedly chosen because of the great name. They were big plump shrimp, tail-on, alongside Thai basil and a bit of onion, all wrapped and fried in a wonton wrapper. The visual was a great one, and the presentation allowed the shrimp to stay the star. My entree of spicy basil leaves with chicken had a great blend of flavors, particularly the sauce. It contained just enough basil to add a nice punch. I would have liked even more of the gravy, simply because it was so good. Thai Pot’s greatest strength is its commitment to authenticity. Thai is one of my favorite cuisines – I love the Americanized versions just as much as I love the ones straight from the recipes of Thai grandmothers – and Thai Pot managed to throw in a couple flavors I hadn’t experienced before. Diners who would like to push their boundaries a bit, or those who already relish the more traditional flavors, will want to find out what’s cooking at Thai Pot.

After tough weekend, AT boys end long layoff Tuesday vs. Willowbrook
SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA ADDISON – For all of the progress the Addison Trail boys basketball team has shown this season, the Blazers still had to swallow a harsh dose of reality last weekend. AT lost two games to very good teams, the Blazers’ first back-to-back losses since the start of the 2014 calendar year. West Suburban Gold foe Proviso East, which sits at the top of the conference, employed its potent offense and frenetic defense as it throttled the Blazers 66-36 on Feb. 7. The next day, AT traveled to Milwaukee’s Bradley Central, home of the Milwaukee Bucks, and lost to Maine South, 55-35. Both Proviso East and Maine South are in first place in their respective conferences with undefeated records in league play. This is an empty weekend on the schedule for the Blazers. AT’s next game is Tuesday at District 88 rival Willowbrook, which will come 10 days after the Maine South game. The Blazers won the previous meeting against Willowbrook, 79-57, on Jan. 25. The Blazers have a 10-14 overall record but carry a winning 5-4 mark in the West Suburban Gold. AT is tied for third in the league with Downers Grove South and Hinsdale South. After facing Willowbrook, the Blazers will travel to Morton on Feb. 21 and close out conference play the next day against Hinsdale South. AT defeated both of those teams earlier this season. In fact, the Blazers’ wins over Hinsdale South and Morton came in consecutive games on Jan. 17 and 24, respectively. In the victory over the Mustangs, Taylor White came up with a late steal, drove to the rim and made a layup with 6.4 seconds left to lift AT to a 61-59 win over highly-regarded Morton.

York senior forward Frank Toohey doesn’t always put up the biggest numbers, but all he has done since joining the Dukes’ varsity team is win. He scored 18 points in York’s win at Glenbard West last Friday for his 84th win in a Duke uniform. Toohey, the Oak Trust Credit Union Athlete of the Week, talked with Suburban Life sports reporter Dan Santaromita about what the accomplishment says about his play and the state of the program.

What does it say about the state of the program that York has had such a great run in recent years? I think this season we’ve had fantastic chemistry. Everyone is willing to step up. No one is trying to steal the show. We don’t care who does well or who does what. We just want to win.
Does it change your perspective at all to hear that York has been playing since 1920? It’s really cool. It’s something that I’m proud of. I’m proud of all these teams that I’ve been on. We’ve definitely been on a good stretch since I’ve been here. I’ve been fortunate to play with many, many great players, a couple playing Division I in Will Sullivan and David Cohn.

Perhaps you’ve heard this classic Valentine’s Day poem, and maybe you’ve even read it to someone you love. This Valentine’s Day, work on making your own version of the poem. It can be funny, silly or sincere. Just have fun with it. Start out with “Roses are red” as the irst line. This sets up the poem for your readers so they know to expect your own version of this classic form. Write four lines. Four lines is the common form this poem uses, so stick to that. Keep it short and silly! Part of the charm of this form is that it is short, sweet and to the point. Each line should have between four to six syllables — use seven only if you have to. be creative. The classic form uses a color on the second line, but you don’t have to. Instead of a color, you can use another descriptive word on that line — sight, sound, taste and feeling all work in place of a color. Rhyme it. Rhyming this poem keeps it feeling light, fresh and musical. Traditionally, you should use words that sound the same at the end of the second and fourth line of the poem (“blue” rhymes with “you” in the original). You can also rhyme lines three and four.
