Going above & beyond Students in Jean Walsh’s second-grade class at W.A. Johnson School celebrate breaking the fundraising goal for Washington, Ill., schools. In two weeks, the families and staff of Johnson School raised $1,568.28, which will be sent to schools in the town devastated by a tornado Nov. 17. Tioga and Johnson schools also combined to collect 1,100 nonperishable food items for the Bensenville-Wood Dale food pantry.

DIXON – Shaw Media announced Monday that it has agreed to acquire the assets of The Herald-News in Joliet from Sun-Times Media. The purchase is expected to close during the first week of January. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. The Herald-News has been serving Joliet, Will County and Grundy County communities for more than 150 years and will continue as part of Shaw Media’s newspaper group. “We are excited to bring The Herald-News into our established, and growing, family-owned media portfolio,” Shaw Media President John Rung said. “We expect to maintain the storied tradition of serving the Joliet region with a high-quality, community-oriented newspaper.” “We have found a great

buyer for The Herald-News in Shaw Media,” said Tim Knight, president of SunTimes Media. “This sale will allow the Sun-Times to focus its resources on transforming its core products.” Shaw Media, based in Dixon, is the third oldest continuously owned and operated family media company in the nation. Murder charges What happened: After Addison police arrested him for the alleged murder of his wife Martha, Kurtis Worley pleaded not guilty to all 10 counts against him, including five counts of first-degree murder, one count of attempted murder in the first degree, one count of domestic battery, two counts of aggravated battery and one

count of armed violence. Kurtis Worley told the court he was angry because Martha wanted a divorce. He allegedly stabbed his 39-year-old wife multiple times in the head and face while she was lying in the couKurtis ples bed. Happy New Year from the Addison Chamber Yes, it’s that time of year when the world becomes a little brighter, happier and friendlier – the holidays seem to bring a change of heart to most everyone, no matter what their religion or beliefs may be, and we realize that we are among the world’s most fortunate people. Sadly there are still those in need among us, but we also have countless willing citizens who generously give of their time, talents and financial assistance to help. Thinking back to the past year, the members of COMMUNITY the Addison Chamber of VOICE Commerce & Industry have Bernadette continued their generous LaRocca support, which allows us to serve them through our programs which advertise and promote their business and services, and to network with business people from Addison and our surrounding communities. We are also able to reach out to the community-at-large by participating, whenever possible, in community events and activities. Mayor Rich Veenstra presented $58,000 in proceeds from last month’s 23rd Annual Mayor’s Community Charity Ball to 21 charities and service organizations. The money went toward a variety of causes including feeding the hungry, helping sick children, outreach to those with substance abuse problems and providing scholarships. The fundraising effort saw a $2,500 increase over 2012. Law enforcement is a tough and often misunderstood profession, so it’s nice to see that some Addison residents took it upon themselves to get educated. The Addison Police Department’s Citizens Police Academy recently graduated 17 residents who went through the 11 sessions required for the program. It’s been a privilege to serve Addison, Bensenville and Wood Dale this year. Here’s to more great stories in 2014. Happy New Year!

Elmhurst says goodbye to Dominick’s By MARI GRIGALIUNAS mgrigaliunas@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – While rumors that Whole Foods might buy the Dominick’s on Route 83 haven’t been confirmed, one thing’s for sure. Come noon Dec. 28, the store will close its doors for the last time under its current owners. “I’m partial because it’s close to my house,” said Elmhurst resident Michealene Zarach, who was just one of the bargain shoppers filling her cart Dec. 20 with 75-percent off merchandise during the store’s final days. Carts were overflowing with canned food and anything else that could be found on the sparse shelves of the store’s remaining open aisles last weekend. Shoppers crowded into checkout lines awaiting the satisfaction of their bargain shopping. “I’m excited about the sale,” Crystal Young of Berkeley admitted. She added that she would

like to see an independent grocer open at the location as opposed to a large chain. Young wasn’t the only one scouring the Elmhurst store for great deals. Joshua Sosa of Franklin Park was home from college and knew how to find a bargain. “I’m not sad,” Sosa said. “Typically, I don’t shop at Dominick’s.” Others were more excited about the Whole Foods rumor. Kate Doyle of Villa Park thought the possibility of a Whole Foods would be a nice addition to the area, not long after Mariano’s moved to town. “I guess it’s a little sad,” Doyle said. “What can you say?” Nakia Hall came from Bellwood to get 75 percent off groceries, but she was sad to see the store close after 47 years in Elmhurst. “I mean Dominick’s has been a staple since I was a kid,” Hall said. Leo Krahule of Villa Park

said he was going to miss the grocery store and predicted its closing will be a hardship. Other retailers in the strip mall at Route 83 and St. Charles include Kmart and Kohl’s as well as several smaller stores like Shoe Carnival and Petco. Neighboring managers weren’t able to comment on how the loss of Dominick’s might affect their business. Dominick’s managers also did not release any information about the fate of the store and its employees. Whoever does lease the space in the future will be part of the city’s TIF III, which is set to expire in 2019. Swapping in a new business will not affect the TIF, according to city officials. Wendy Lau of Elmhurst supports the idea of Whole Foods, but hopes the space remains a grocery store even if another company buys it. “It’s kind of sad,” Lau said. “It’s a longstanding Chicago tradition.”

Community rallies to support toddler with leukemia By JENNY CASALE msleditorial@shawmedia.com CAROL STREAM – While most families were preparing for the holidays in early December, the Heard family was readying themselves for their youngest child’s challenging journey to cancer recovery. Two-and-a-half-year-old Vayda has pre b acute lymphocytic leukemia and will need to undergo more than two years of treatment, including chemotherapy, to fight the disease. Her diagnosis came as a shock to the Carol Stream family of six – parents, Jennifer and Keith, and Vayda’s

“This was very heartbreaking to me,” said Smart. Smart is one of many who knows the Heard family through their involvement in community and park district activities. She contacted Amy Adams, owner of the Carol Stream franchise, who immediately Culvers’ agreed to the fundraiser and pledged 10 percent of the day’s sales toward the family. The fundraiser netted $900 in sales and more than $700 was collected in the store’s donation buckets. “I have never seen that kind of response,” said Adams. “It’s unbelievable seeing

how the Carol Stream community came together.” Culver’s Co-Founder Craig Culver visited the store the evening of the fundraiser and was equally impressed by the local support. “What a wonderful thing to do,” said Culver. “Giving back to the people and the community is just a culture of Culver’s.” The fundraiser was also supported by village officials and Community Consolidated School District 93 staff, who helped serve during the dinner rush.. “We will forever be grateful for these kind-hearted people,” Jennifer said.

hl Road in Warrenville; and 175 W. Army Trail Road in Glendale Heights. Shoppers may call Target at 866-8528680. The Minneapolis-based corporation confirmed Dec. 19 that up to 40 million credit and debit cards could be at risk after a security breach that started last month, the release said.

The national retail giant is investigating the hack, which reportedly began on Black Friday (Nov. 29) and extended to Dec. 15, the company is reporting. Target is reportedly working closely with law enforcement and financial institutions, and has identified and resolved the issue. “Target’s first priority is

preserving the trust of our guests and we have moved swiftly to address this issue, so guests can shop with confidence,” Gregg Steinhafel, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Target said in the release. “We take this matter very seriously and are working with law enforcement to bring those respon-

And yes, that is key: Pensions are a promise. But during the years, Illinois politicians “borrowed” (wink, wink) the money out of the pension funds and used the money for various other things. Now the state is broke and can’t pay back the large amounts of “borrowed” funds taken from the pension fund to its rightful owners, the state employees. So now that the government and media has set about de-

monizing public employees so that they can justify spending employees’ hard-earned pensions. It was sickening to watch the governor hamming it up on TV, putting on his pouty face and proclaiming something to the effect of, “If these greedy, mean old pensioners don’t make some major concessions, then we won’t have enough money to educate our kids.” Politics as usual in Illinois. Think about who state employees are: State police, Department of Public Health, teachers, prison guards, to name a few, who these politicians are ripping off!

8SOUND OFF Teens need a break, too! Like most kids, I’m on break from school for the holidays. Most of my friends are having parties, playing video games and eating junk food. But not me! My dad and mom are making me do chores around the house. My dad signed me up for a class at the library. He’s making me do homework to prepare for it. Today is Saturday, my first day of break and I’ve been working for hours. I don’t think it’s fair considering that I’m on break. My mom and dad have time off work. When do I get to enjoy the holiday? Old Town Pour House comes to Oak Brook OAK BROOK – Old Town Pour House proclaims beer a staple of life. The restaurant-bar backs that up once you step inside the new Oak Brook eatery. Nestled in an expansive storefront underneath Neiman Marcus inside the upscale Oakbrook Center, Old Town Pour House gives shoppers a cozy wind-down over a cold brew and American cuisine. The restaurant opened on the east side of the shopping mall in late November, making it Old Town Pour House’s second location, as the owners ventured west from their popular Chicago location. The exterior screams modern with its bold signage and contemporary outdoor fireplaces. Inside, it’s the same story, with a mix of tables and booths surrounding a bar with a good number of flat-screens. A companion and I dined at Pour House on a recent holiday shopping night. Picking up the menu, we discovered that beer selections practically outnumber food options three to one – a good thing in my book. From ciders to lagers to wheats, there are plenty of unique craft selections to pair with your meals. The full bar boasts about 90 taps. My date and I kicked off the experience with a pair of tasty appetizers – the Firecracker Rolls under the “Bar Bites” portion of the menu, and the Truffle Mac N Cheese under “Shareables.” Our waitperson assured us both sections of the menu are essentially shared plates. The Firecracker Rolls are a spicy mix of Cajun chicken, a vegetable medley and avocado cream. It’s definitely a spicy dish – have a beverage handy – but the avocado cream was a nice cool-down. The Truffle Mac N Cheese was the favorite dish of the night at our table. With Parmesan breadcrumbs and black truffle, accented by smoked bacon tidbits, it was anything

For our entrees, my date, readying for some post-meal shopping, opted light for the Pour House Chopped Salad. The salad is a fresh-made combo of marinated grilled chicken, romaine lettuce and a host of other ingredients. The sweet-and-sour tarragon dressing was a great touch; you may want to ask for extra. I opted for the Pour House Burger. The Angus beef patty was topped with aged white cheddar and a pair of beer-battered onion rings on a Portuguese bun. It was a solid burger complemented nicely with olive-oil-parsley fries. Other menu options extend to five additional salad selections, including the Seared Tuna Nicoise Salad and the BBQ Smoked Chicken Salad, a trio of soups and five dinner entrees ranging from Miller Farms Chicken to Cedar River Strip.

Will it be Rodgers or Flynn behind center? Hub Arkush

This week, we have two matchups to preview: The Bears versus the Packers with Aaron Rodgers at quarterback, and the Bears versus the Pack with Matt Flynn behind the wheel. My best guess is it will be Flynn irrespective of what’s at stake. Reports from late last week are that Rodgers never was close to being medically cleared, so it’s hard to imagine he will make that much progress for the Bears game. The only thing that’s certain is we won’t know until late in the week, if before Sunday at all. With Rodgers, you’re talking about the best quarterback in the game, and one of the best ever. The Packers are capable of beating you with the pass or the run, and Jordy Nelson, James Jones, Jarrett Boykin and, perhaps,

even Aaron Quarless all become weapons you have to scheme for. If it’s Flynn at quarterback, the Bears will focus their attention on stopping Eddie Lacy, James Starks and Nelson, and then trust individual defenders to make plays against the rest while the defense tries to force Flynn to make a play to beat them. Don’t think for a minute that Flynn can’t beat you. He’s very comfortable in Mike McCarthy’s offense and just fine reading defenses, going through his progressions and knowing when to quit on a play to fight another day. But he has nowhere near the cannon Rodgers does nor can he command that kind of accuracy. Keep Flynn in third-and-long, and he’s unlikely to beat you. The Packers are top five or top 10 in almost every offensive category, regardless of the quarterback, except avoiding interceptions and allowing quarterback sacks. There, it makes a difference who’s under center. Rodgers has thrown four intercep-

tions and has been sacked 18 times in 251 attempts. Flynn, Scott Tolzein and Seneca Wallace have thrown 10 interceptions and have been sacked 24 times in 280 attempts. Flynn has seven of those picks and 17 sacks in 166 attempts. Regardless of which quarterback it is, the story of this game for the Bears’ defense figures to be their 32nd-ranked run defense versus Lacy and Starks. With Flynn at quarterback, the Bears will pack seven, eight or even nine in the box on most plays. Lacy is dynamic at getting to the second level, but not a huge threat to outrun anyone in the secondary or go all the way. Defensively, the Packers have been a huge disappointment this year and are more likely to be the reason whether the Bears win the NFC North than Rodgers’ injury. After their best outing of the year versus Atlanta in Lambeau three weeks ago, Dallas and Pittsburgh have scorched them the past two weeks. They had no answers

for the Steelers’ Le’Veon Bell last week, and Matt Forte should have a big day. After a fast start to the season, B.J. Raji and Ryan Pickett have been ineffective up front, and the loss of Johnny Jolly for the season with a neck injury has been huge as he was playing the best football of his career. Clay Matthews and Nick Perry are back from injury at the outside linebacker spots, but neither is rushing the quarterback the way they are capable, and A.J. Hawk and Brad Jones inside are not as stout as they need to be against the run. Tramon Williams and Sam Shields have been inconsistent, at best, on the corners, making the occasional big play but struggling in coverage often. That matchup with Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery is potentially another big edge for the Bears. Morgan Burnett and M.D. Jennings are serviceable safeties, but Burnett has failed to make the leap to perennial Pro-Bowler the Packers envisioned.

In a perfect world, you have been crowned as your league’s fantasy football champion. More likely, however, it’s wait until next year. In either event, I hope you had fun playing fantasy football this year. I also hope that this column, perhaps, provided you some not-terrible advice, at least once in a while. If nothing else, there were quite a few fantasy surprises in 2013. Ray Rice was a consensus first-rounder, as was CJ Spiller. No one expected Peyton Manning to be a bum, but I don’t recall much talk about him shattering the single-season touchdown passes record, either. It was a wild season.

Golf regional title part of AT fall sports highlights By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com Addison Trail had a number of high points throughout the fall sports season. Among them were the boys golf team winning a regional and the ATWB co-op swim team winning the West Suburban Gold meet. Those highlights and more are listed below, in no particular order.

1. Dela Cruz goes back to state Senior golfer Gia Dela Cruz capped off a phenomenal high school career with her third trip to the Class AA state tournament. At state, she shot an 83 in the first round and followed that up with an 85 to tie for 61st overall. It was her best finish in three trips to state. Junior Bridget McKnight joined Dela Cruz as an individual qualifier from the regional meet.

2. Boys golf wins regional By shooting a 321, the Blazers won the Conant regional title at the Bridges of Poplar Creek Country Club. Junior Zack Vaca and senior Matt Piotrowski each shot 78s to tie for the third-best rounds at the tournament. AT was seven strokes better than the runner-up. All four Blazers who counted towards the team total shot under 85. Junior Dan Hartnett posted an 81 and junior Joe Zucchero shot an 84. Piotrowski was the only senior in the Blazers’ lineup at the regional, meaning more success could be ahead next year.

3. Miranda leads AT cross country Senior boys cross country runner Luis Miranda was the Blazers’ top runner this fall. Miranda was fifth at the West Suburban Gold meet and followed that up a week later by advancing from the Fenwick regional at Schiller Woods. Mi-

randa crossed the finish line in 29th to become the only Blazer to make it to the sectional race.

4. Youth stands out for AT football The Blazers didn’t have as much success in the win column as they were hoping for with a 2-7 record, but plenty of juniors played well to give the program hope for next year. Juniors Jaavion Bradley, Matt Gontarek and Eric Gilliam were all named to the all-conference team in the West Suburban Gold. Bradley is one of the best junior wide receivers in the area while Gontarek, at defensive back, and Gilliam, at linebacker, will give the Blazer defense some quality returning talent. In addition, junior quarterback Matt Rybarczyk will enter next season with a year of experience as a starter under his belt with his top two receivers, Bradley and fellow junior Jake Atiyeh, back in the fold.

5. McNamara keys AT/WB swimming Willowbrook junior Kelly McNamara’s second place finish in the 100-yard butterfly at state was the high point for a strong season for the Addison Trail-Willowbrook co-op girls swimming team. The team also won the West Suburban Gold meet and qualified the 200-yard freestyle relay to state. McNamara finished behind only Texas-bound Fenwick senior Mimi Schneider in the butterfly and will be among the favorites to win the event next year. She was second in both the prelims and the finals. IC Catholic | Sophomore | Basketball Why Epting was selected: Epting scored 25 points in IC’s 49-45 win over Suburban Christian Gold rival Montini on Dec. 20. IC Catholic sophomore forward Rhashaun Epting has emerged as a top player for the Knights after being a contributor as a freshman. His recent 25-point outing against Montini gave the Knights a crucial win in their quest to the win Suburban Christian Gold for the third year in a row. Epting, the Oak Trust Credit Union Athlete of the Week, spoke with sports reporter Dan Santaromita about the win and the outlook for the season.

What was working for you against Montini? My team did a good job of getting me looks and they opened me up. I got a big help from Will [Lyles] and Clark [Brinkman]. They just did a good job the whole game and I just kept sticking with it and eventually scored.

Montini is a bit of a rivalry game for you guys. Do you get

excited for those games? We do get excited for that game because all the fans come out and we get a big crowd every time we play Montini, no matter the game or if it’s here or there. It’s always good to get a win against them.

How well do you think the team is playing so far? We’re playing good. Our record is pretty good, 8-1 [entering Thursday], but I think we should put away some of these teams earlier.

Was it tough to be a freshman on varsity last year? It was a lack of confidence and I just would lose my edge sometimes. I realize this year you got to keep positive.

What do you think you’ve improved from last year? I think I’ve gotten quicker and more importantly my attitude has improved from last year.

Last weekend had a lot of potential for the Addison Trail boys basketball team. The Blazers hosted defending conference champion Proviso East on Friday and played in its own pre-holiday tournament final on Saturday. AT lost both games, missing out on the opportunity for two truly memorable victories. Proviso East escaped Addison with a 71-69 win in overtime. For the Blazers to come that close against a team that beat them by 55 and 26 points in two meetings last year is a sign of relative progress, but won’t be much consolation to the Blazers. Kailin Fisher hit a game-winning shot with 2.5 seconds left in the overtime. James Pupillo scored 17 points for AT. A day later Lake Park won AT’s pre-holiday tournament with a 57-47 victory over the Blazers. AT trailed by as many as 14 points in the second quarter and climbed within four in the fourth, but came up short. Pupillo led the team again with 22 points.

BOYS BASKETBALL Montini The Broncos fell to IC Catholic 49-45 on Dec. 20. In the first game at Glenbard West’s holiday tournament on Monday, Montini lost to Leyden 64-56 despite 14 points from Terrance

Williams and 12 each from Tom McGillicuddy and Nile Sykes.

Willowbrook The Warriors dropped the opener of the Glenbard West Holiday Tournament 57-38 to Hoffman Estates on Monday.

Timothy Christian The Trojans picked up a 64-36 Metro Suburban Conference win over Elmwood Park on Dec. 20. Timothy led 35-7 at halftime and cruised in the second half. Connor VanderBrug had 23 points to lead Timothy. Khali Valrie added 16 points.

GIRLS BASKETBALL Montini Oak Park-River Forest was no match for the Broncos in the opener of the Montini Christmas Tournament on Monday. Montini won 77-40.

Willowbrook The Warriors’ undefeated start to the season came to a close in a 38-32 loss to Sycamore on Dec. 20. Molly Krawczykowski scored 14 points in the loss. Willowbrook also lost to Glenbrook South 62-41 in the opener of Wheaton North’s tournament on Monday despite 11 points from Krawczykowski.

IC Catholic The Knights dropped the opener of the Oswego East Holiday Tournament 47-46 to Sycamore on Monday.

WRESTLING Glenbard East The Rams lost to powerhouse Glenbard North 58-6 on Dec. 20. De’Andre Johnson picked up East’s only match victory by winning via fall at heavyweight.

Addison Trail Niko Rocha and Bobby Carson both won tournament titles at Lake Park on Saturday. The Blazers were third out of 17 teams.

GIRLS GYMNASTICS Addison Trail The Blazers grabbed third out of seven teams as host of the Winter Tumbleland Invitational on Saturday. AT scored 131.45 points and was led by Kennedy O’Neill, who was third in the all-around with a score of 34.65.

Willowbrook Cassidy McFarlane was second in the all-around at Addison Trail’s Winter Tumbleland Invitational on Saturday. Her score of 35.10 put her one point off of first place. The Warriors scored 129.2 points and were fifth out of seven teams.

Glenbard East Led by all-arounder Veronika Srey, the Rams took fourth out of nine teams at the Illinois Best Invitational at Wheaton Warrenville South. Srey was fourth in the all-around with a 34.00 total.

Memorable moments from Montini fall sports

The football team made its fifth straight trip to the state title game, but they weren’t the only set of Broncos to have a successful fall season. Here is a list of the top five accomplishments, victories and moments from Montini’s fall sports season, in no particular order.

1. Football returns to state final Throughout the regular season, Montini proved to be dominant on the football field. It opened the season with wins over bigger class schools Maine South and East St. Louis and went undefeated in the regular season. The play of Ohio State recruit Dylan Thompson and Notre Dame recruit Nile Sykes led a stout defense, and the offense put up big numbers thanks to senior quarterback Alex Wills and the likes of Tyler Tumpane, Leon Thornton and Niko Italia. The Broncos made it to the Class 5A final where the undefeated run came to a close against Sacred Heart-Griffin. Oddly enough, the last time Montini didn’t win state, 2008, was also the last time it went undefeated in the regular season. Despite ending on a sour note, Montini matched a school record for wins in a season with 13.

2. Volleyball wins 29 matches At the beginning of the year, Montini girls volleyball coach Steve Dowjotas said the team could be something special. As it turned out, he knew his team’s talent pretty well. The Broncos went 29-4 and proved to be an elite team this fall. After beating a talented Nazareth team in a regional semifinal, the Broncos ran into defending state champion St. Francis. Montini was able to take the first game, but fell in three. The unlucky draw cut short what could have been a special postseason run. St. Francis didn’t lose another game the rest of the postseason and won

The Broncos had a successful season that included winning nearly 30 matches and playing for a regional title. its second straight state title. Seniors Joyce Balash, Bridget Lucas and Natalie Lopez were among the standouts. Junior St. Louis recruit Monica Loftus is expected back to lead the team next season.

3. Soccer wins first regional ever For the first time in program history, the Montini boys soccer team won a postseason trophy. The Broncos entered with the top seed in the Class 1A regional and blew away Westmont 6-0 in the semifinal. In the final, host Lisle awaited. The Lions took Montini to penalty kicks, but the Broncos were 4-3 win-

ners and went on to play for a sectional title.

4. Keefe leads Bronco golf to state The Montini boys golf team had a memorable postseason. The Broncos were third at the Class 2A St. Ignatius regional, finishing four shots off the title. Junior Adam Keefe and senior Tommy Vivirito each shot 80s to lead Montini. At the sectional at Broken Arrow, Montini maintained that third place spot to head to state. Montini took 12th at state and Keefe was the highest individual on the team, tying for 15th on the final leaderboard.
