Grigaliunas: How has your experience as mayor been different from your previous eight years as deputy mayor? Veenstra: [I’ve had] the realization that we have 37,000 lives in town, and it’s my responsibility to provide for their safety and welfare. When you’re a trustee you realize that, but it really hits homes when all of a sudden you’re mayor, and you’re the point person.

Grigaliunas: What are you most proud of accomplishing in 2013?

Rich Veenstra hopes to open the lines of communication with residents as he enters his first new year as Addison’s mayor. Veenstra: One of the things that I was aware of is that there are a lot of different organizations in town that do tremendous work for the community. ... They tend to work unilaterally, and one of the first things I did after the election was call them together. I had, I believe, 24 different organizations represented at the first meeting. We talked about what each

organization does, what their primary focus is. Then we talked about articulation and how each one does a tremendous job, but working together collectively, collaboratively there’s a synergy that can be gained.

Grigaliunas: Why did you want to bring everyone together like that? Veenstra: A lot of years ago

Grigaliunas: What have you done so far as mayor to promote economic growth in Addison, and what are your plans for developing business in 2014? Veenstra: The biggest thing is the vacant Dominick’s Plaza has been purchased … XSport Fitness will probably be the major tenant in that building, and that is a huge uptick. That space has been vacant for years.

Farther west we’re with a couple of potential restaurants that have some interest in coming to town. I think it’s really being aggressive and making those different retailers know that they’re welcome and we really want them in town. We’ve realized the entertainment corridor is a real niche for us. ... There’s things that are draws and that’s where we want to start capitalizing and expanding.

Grigaliunas: You’ve also expressed your appreciation for former mayor Larry Hartwig’s mentorship, but in what ways have you found yourself taking a different approach than the previous mayor? Veenstra: Larry came out of an academic background. I’ve come out of a business production kind of a background. So we tend to look at things a little bit differently in terms of workflow. I think I look at what we do as a village a little bit differently as far as process flow and what’s

Addison Mayor Rich Veenstra said he wants to establish better collaboration between retailers beyond what the Chamber of Commerce and Industry does now. He wants to develop action plans for individual areas of town.

Veenstra said the village is looking at developing senior housing in a few of areas of town.

Veenstra wants to continue redeveloping Lake Street with the addition of XSport Fitness where Dominick’s once stood.

Veenstra hopes as the economy improves, the village will revisit the Town Center Redevelopment Plan to possibly make changes or improvements.

Veenstra also is excited to celebrate Addison’s 130th anniversary this year. He expects the schools to include Addison history in their curriculum and a citywide celebration later in the year.

ADDISON – Mayor Rich Veenstra is not a new face around the Addison Village Hall, but it’s been less than a year since he took his seat in the mayor’s office. Suburban Life reporter Mari Grigaliunas recently spoke with Veenstra about his first eight months on the job, plans for Addison’s 130th anniversary and attracting businesses to town in 2014.

Choir brings cheer to hospice and rehab bedsides By NATHAN LURZ

The Threshold Singers of Wheaton, a part of the national organization Threshold Choir, was founded four years ago by Winfield resident Grace Fill. The choir’s mission is to visit those near the end of their lives or receiving long-term medical care and sing to them to lift their spirits. Fill also organized another group affiliated with the Rainbow Hospice in Mount Prospect. “I just felt very, very strongly that this is something that I wanted to participate in to the degree that when there wasn’t one for me to join, that I formed one. Well, two accidentally,” she said. The Wheaton choir has 21

Heather Babiar, a Lombard resident and a singer in both choirs, said she joined after a significant breakup. “That relationship, I didn’t really feel like I had a voice so one of the things I thought I might try was use my voice to help people,” she said. Every experience is different, she said, but all are meaningful. “There’s something about helping someone who is helpless, a stranger who is in pain, who is suffering, who doesn’t have anyone,” Babiar said. “It’s really connecting with people that are feeling low, or are at the end of their lives or are scared. It’s just the kindness of strangers, and we get so much out of it.” The group faces some tough situations, she said, but added that there is sometimes a stigma surrounding death, which she has seen disproved, as in the case of one patient. “She wasn’t responsive but we were singing quietly anyway,” Babiar said. “Even though she had been ill, even though she had been wasting away ... she was just glowing so peaceful and childlike and innocent. It’s not the way you think of someone at the end of their life.” Shauna Berman, an assistant administrator at the Convalescent Center, said the Theshold Singers’ performances are soothing and their volunteer work offers a layer of support and comfort. “In many cases, music in

That’s the feeling you get when they’re around.” Fill said bringing comfort to those she and the other Threshold Singers serenade has been a special experience. “We have had the honor of sharing time with people who are at a very profound place in their lives,” she said. “It is truly an honor to offer them a gift.”

GLAUCOMA Because those with the most common form of glaucoma (open-angle) usually do not being to recognize symptoms of the eye disease until they have begun to loose vision, their hopes of arresting vision loss largely rest with comprehensive eye exams. Real chance for fraud in health care law Before its launch on Oct. 1, the health care law’s exchange website repeatedly failed internal tests, crashing with as few as 200 or 300 people on the site. Yet the Obama Administration pushed ahead, launching Healthcare.gov without the most basic end-to-end security tests. At a recent Congressional hearing, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius was asked whether she would shut down Obamacare’s exchange website until all its security risks were COMMUNITY addressed. She flatly reVOICE fused. With the hasty launch Peter of Obamacare, the Obama Roskam Administration continues to jeopardize the security of millions of American’s personal information thanks to a vulnerable website built for a structurally flawed program. Just how bad is Healthcare.gov? Security experts warn there are “considerable safety risks” that “hint at deeper vulnerabilities” becuase of cutting corners on security testing and ignoring industry standards. Just days before the launch, an internal memo warned of “high” security risks but the head of the agency that created Healthcare.gov signed off on it anyway. Software testers already found several security breaches where hackers can get access to your email and security questions or rig the site to send password-reset information to a third party. Just last week, a North Carolina man tried to log onto the website and got a South Carolina man’s personal information. This isn’t just an illustration of an incompetent launch, it’s a serious threat to the safety of your personal information. The website’s technical shortcomings are well-documented, but of deeper concern is the rampant potential for security vulnerabilities on the backend of the website, the law’s massive “data hub.” The hub will collect the information people submit to Healthcare.gov when they enroll in the exchanges and allow the staff of seven different sprawling federal agencies to access it. It has already been forced to go dark for days at a time for technical maintenance. This invokes little confidence that the data hub will be able to keep Americans’ private data safe, making it a goldmine for hackers. Americans deserve a government that is doing everything in its power to keep you safe as it relates to your private information. That’s why the House will not stop its aggressive oversight, will strengthen anti-fraud efforts and demand the Administration put key protections in place in the law. When a person’s private information is exposed, it can cause a ripple effect that impacts their identity, finances, employment and everyday life.

ELMHURST – More than photos and quotes bring Carl Sandburg to life at the Elmhurst Historical Museum. Video footage of Sandburg with his family in the yard of their Elmhurst home was provided to the museum by John Steichen, the American Renaissance man’s grandson. Visitors can watch the Sandburg family playing in the yard and his daughters dancing the Charleston. “I think really what we hope people get form the exhibit is just an overall appreciation of what this guy did while he was in our town,” said Lance Tawzer, curator of exhibits. While Carl Sandburg lived in Elmhurst, he completed “Abraham Lincoln: The Prairie Years and the War Years,” wrote the children’s tales “Rootabaga Stories” and collected folk songs for “The American Songbag.” “We kind of found out he was really going through a transitional period,” Tawzer said. When Sandburg completed “Abraham Lincoln,” he finally made a substantial amount of money, but until then he worked hard as a newspaper man for the Chicago Daily News, writing poems and children’s stories during his off time. “It’s just really impressive to see that kind of American work ethic,” Tawzer said. The “Carl Sandburg in Elmhurst” exhibit focuses on the years the poet lived in town from 1919 to 1928. While other exhibits and museums have focused on Sandburg’s time in North Carolina or his birthplace in Galesburg, Tawzer thinks the Elmhurst exhibit is unique because it brings Sandburg’s connections full circle with his return visit in 1960 when Elmhurst Junior High was renamed Sandburg Middle School in his honor. “He didn’t end up going back to Galesburg the way he ended up coming back to Elmhurst,” Tawzer said. sity of Illinois Rare Books and Manuscripts Library to put the exhibit together. Items that belonged to Sandburg, including a visor and a pipe, are on loan from the University of Illinois. One of Sandburg’s daughters, Helga Sandburg Crile, also loaned the Elmhurst Historical Museum her father’s typewriter and guitar. “We really did as much of an in-depth interpretive exhibit through this 10-year period,” Tawzer said. From the miniature movie theater where visitors can watch films from the 1920s while listening to reviews by Sandburg to the interactive Abraham Lincoln quiz with questions based on the biography Sandburg wrote, the exhibit draws in visitors. “I think what I like about the exhibit is it really breaks it down into these themes that are really digestible,” Tawzer said. One key piece is a documentary covering Sandburg’s journey to assemble “The American Songbag,” a collection of folk songs. Historian and folk musician Bucky Halker narrates the video. “He realizes how important these songs are to American history,” Tawzer said of Halker. Halker will also perform music form Sandburg’s book for the museum’s celebration of his 136th birthday. The party on Sunday will also include exhibit tours and birthday cake, but the exhibit will stay on display through April 20. “I think people will really garner an appreciation for this American treasure and how he connects to this town in these 10 years,” Tawzer said.

Colleen Daley, executive director for the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence and an opponent of the bill,

said while the law has some positives, such as increased background checks, extensive training requirements and prohibited locations, its effect is unclear. She expects to see lawsuits challenge the law, but said first, people need to be educated. “People are going to be around others who are carrying legal, loaded guns,” she said. “Some are deeply concerned, some aren’t, but the average citizen should be aware that something like this is happening.” Dr. Eldon Trame, president of the Illinois State Medical Society, said many of the more than 12,000 current and retired doctors in his organization were taking a “wait and see” attitude toward medicinal marijuana and that members were neither encouraged nor discouraged from prescribing it. “Some physicians are very much in favor of the law and some are very much not in favor of the law,” he said. “But I, at least, will certainly have an open eye and open mind to this.”

Two of Illinois’ biggest and most controversial laws passed in 2013 – concealed carry permits and medicinal marijuana – officially took effect Jan. 1. However, their impact won’t be seen for months, according to government agencies. Illinois State Police will accept online applications to carry a concealed handgun starting Jan. 5 and recently announced the acceptance of paper applications beginning July 1. More than 2,000 registered concealed carry instructors are already listed on the State Police website, said spokesperson Monique Bond, but the first permits won’t be issued until early April. “It could be sooner, but we are going to use the full 90 days to give us enough time to make sure we do it right,” Bond said. Spend an evening in South America at Rio’s ADDISON – One of the joys of living in this melting pot of a nation is that everyone comes here, and they bring their delicacies with them. I love American, Italian, Mexican, Thai and Japanese cuisine, along with several other varieties I’ve enjoyed over the years. But every once in a while, it’s fun to branch out by tasting something new. And something new is exactly what I found at Rio’s Fine South American Cuisine in Addison. Billed as a Peruvian restaurant on various websites, Rio’s also has delicacies from Argentina and Brazil that are sure to tempt your taste buds. When you first walk in, you’re greeted by a bar area that’s tasteful and hip, but not particularly ethnic. You could meet business clients for drinks here and they wouldn’t necessarily even recall that it was a South American establishment – unless they look closely at the wine list, which is filled with selections from all over the continent. Enter the dining area, though, and you’ll find yourself in a scene that’s both elegant and evocative of the dishes you’re about to sample. A massive mural across the back wall combines the famous Christ the Redeemer statue that overlooks Rio de Janeiro in Brazil with the Incan ruins of Machu Picchu in Peru. Other small decor touches give hints of South America without overwhelming the room and making it kitschy. I stopped by Rio’s on a recent evening with a dining companion, and I started right off with an authentic drink from south of the equator – a Dona Paula Sauvignon Blanc from Argentina, which the wine list describes as “bright, crisp, tart green apple skin, lime zest, guava, and grapefruit with a touch of minerality.” It proved to be a terrific accompaniment to the dishes that followed. We started with the Peruvian Sampler, wanting to

I most enjoyed the flavorful

skewer, while my companion was a big fan of the tamale. When selecting an entree, I was immediately taken by the bright pictures of every dish on the menu. One item, the Pollo Enrollado, grabbed my attention right away. It fea-

remarked happily after trying a bite. My companion’s dish was even better, the Tallarin Verde con Churrasco. It included a generous helping of perfectly seasoned steak alongside fettucine mixed with Peruvian pesto (spinach, basil, white cheese, walnuts and olive oil). The steak and the pasta both tasted great on their own, but together the flavors were perfectly paired. We both really wanted dessert – interesting items included churros filled with caramel and hot chocolate dipping sauce, and ice cream made with Andean Lucuma fruit – but we were both too stuffed to properly enjoy it. That just means that next time I’ll have to – regretfully – forgo the Peruvian Sampler to save some room to try some exotic ice cream.

He was seeded seventh entering state and qualified out of the preliminaries with the third-fastest time but was the only finalist to run a faster time in the finals. ADDISON – The experience on the floor wasn’t the most successful, but the Centralia Holiday Tournament provided at atmosphere that may help the Addison Trail boys basketball team later on. The Blazers went 0-3 at the tournament while playing against quality competition in a frenzied atmosphere. Despite the losses, AT coach Brendan Lyons thought it was a good experience. “It was a fantastic tournament,” Lyons said. “It was a great trip. We didn’t do well. That was kind of the low point of it. Hopefully the experience of being down there and seeing some teams we don’t see will help us going forward. “I think the first two days we were maybe taken a back by the atmosphere.” The tournament featured teams from four different states and had all the hoopla of a major event thanks to the interest in the local team in Centralia. AT (5-11) lost the opener against Alton, which entered the tournament with an undefeated record and made the final. The Blazers left at 5:30 a.m. to make a four-anda-half hour bus drive to Centralia for a 12:30 p.m. game. The Blazers then lost a pair of consolation games to Marist and Christian County, a Kentucky school, despite being in those games. AT trailed Marist by two at halftime before losing by 22 and took Christian County to overtime. “We felt like we played some good competition,” Lyons said. “I’ve been to a lot of

tournaments and that’s one of the best-run tournaments. “It was an interesting experience because it is a high school gym, but the set up in there is fantastic. It kind of feels like the whole town stops.” Starting guard Ronald Duling played through an injury that he suffered in the final of AT’s pre-holiday tournament on Dec. 21. He struggled in the first two games while playing fewer minutes and sat out the final game. Leading scorer James Pupillo turned his ankle early on in the finale and sat out the rest of the game. Pupillo scored in double figures the first two games. In the final game, Joe Kurucar scored 29 points, but AT couldn’t close out Christian County down the stretch. “I thought we just competed and played hard,” Lyons said. “We missed some free throws down the stretch that would have won the game for us.” The individual highlight was the play of Joe Villasenor, who was 16-for-18 from the field during the tournament and averaged 11 points per game. “He’s really starting to come into his own and give us a presence in the block area on the glass that was desperately needed,” Lyons said.

Name: Xavier Montalvo, Montini Sport: Wrestling, 160 pounds Place: Class 2A champ State run: Montalvo qualified for state as a freshman but truly broke through to win the state championship as a sophomore. He was 54-5, and his closest match at state was a 7-2 victory in the final.

Name: Dan Draski, WillowName: Jake Turk, Montini Sport: Wrestling, 182 pounds Place: Class 2A champ State run: Turk capped off his career with a state title at 182 pounds, improving on his fourth-place finish as a junior. He posted a 43-8 record and had two pins and a major decision in four matches at state.

‘We’re getting closer and closer’ Warriors showing improvement, but consistency a key to future success By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com VILLA PARK – Willowbrook boys basketball coach Chris Perkins is trying to figure out how to get everything working at the same time for his team. Seemingly every time the Warriors make progress in one area, another issue pops up as if the team is balancing spinning plates. “It’s getting frustrating as far as it seems we’re getting closer and closer,” Perkins said. “It seems like they’re dangling a carrot right there and we’re not able to grab it. “It’s like we figure one thing out then we lose something else. We want to get everything clicking on all cylinders. That’s the goal.” The Warriors may have gotten a glimpse of what it’s like to click on all cylinders in the finale of the Glenbard West Holiday Classic. After losing pool play games to Hoffman Estates, St. Francis and Northridge, the Warriors thumped winless Fenton 73-31 in the seventh place game of the eight-team tournament on Dec. 28. It was Willowbrook’s second win on the season and improved the team’s record

to 2-10. The win came on the heels of a tough loss to Northridge in the pool play finale on Dec. 27. In that game, Willowbrook jumped out to an early sixpoint lead and led in the third quarter, but fell apart in the fourth quarter. In that loss, Chris Poole led the team with 16 points. Ed Mickevicius scored 11 and Chris Villafuerte added 10 points. “That was actually the best we’ve shot the ball in a while, so that was a positive,” Perkins said. “We were making shots early on and stopped making shots in the fourth quarter. The free throw line really hurt us. We went 6-for18.” For all of the Warriors’ previous shooting woes, Perkins wants the team to focus on the defensive end. “We got to go back to the basics as far as keeping guys in front of us, our rotation when we get beat baseline,” Perkins said. The Warriors return to action Jan. 7 at Hoffman Estates in a rematch of a tournament game played on Dec. 23. The next conference game is Jan. 10 at Downers Grove South, which is 1-2 in the West Suburban Gold.

Despite winning a state trophy in Class 3A the past four years and returning three seniors with Division I commitments this season, the Broncos had a chip on their shoulder entering their own Christmas tournament last weekend. Montini came away champions, beating both of last year’s Class 4A finalists in the process. After knocking off

defending 4A champ Marian Catholic 52-48 in the semifinals, they defeated Rolling Meadows 66-63 in a rematch of last year’s tournament final. “It was really big consider-

ing we didn’t have that much respect going into it,” senior Sara Ross said. “We don’t really buy into that. We play for ourselves.” Montini trailed by 10 points in the second quarter and by as many as 11 in the third against Rolling Meadows, but fought back both times. Ross made a crucial steal and layup in the final minute to give Montini a 64-63 lead. She added two free throws with 27.4 seconds left to make it a three-point lead. The Broncos (15-1) may have restored some of the mystique the program has built up in re-

cent years. They may also be playing their best basketball of the season. “We saw glimpses of it out at Sterling and kind of put it all together this week,” Montini coach Jason Nichols said. “We got to carry it over to the second half [of the season] because it really doesn’t mean anything if you don’t finish what you want to get accomplished, which is to get back down to state playing for a state title. I think we took a great step in that direction.” Kateri Stone scored 23 points to lead Montini in the

final. Ross finished with 12 points and Kelly Karlis and Kaylee Bambule scored 10 each. The final was played in front of a tightly packed crowd Saturday night. “We knew going into it that it was going to be a huge environment, and it’s kind of what we live for,” Ross said. “We love big games like that. Not so much the close games because everybody always gets a heart attack. We just tried to keep our composure. It was crazy, but we were glad to come out with the win.”

Kateri Stone is one of a trio of Montini seniors that are committed to play for Division I college teams next year. Until then, the Colgate recruit and the Broncos are again in search of a state title. They proved their worth by winning their own Christmas tournament with wins over elite teams in Marian Catholic and Rolling Meadows. Stone, the Oak Trust Credit Union Athlete of the Week, led the Broncos with 23 points in the final victory over Rolling Meadows and talked with Suburban Life sports reporter Dan Santaromita after the game.

What does it mean to win this tournament? We weren’t expected to win this tournament. I think that really motivated us. I thought we played our hearts out and played strong. Hopefully this

will carry over to the second half [of the season].

What were you thinking when you trailed Rolling Meadows by 11 in the third quarter? We’ve been in this situation so many times. I think because we’re seniors now we’re a lot more mature. We have to keep everybody calm. We have a lot of underclassmen who are new to this.

What are you looking forward to the rest of the season? We’re not satisfied yet. We have another half. Hopefully this momentum will help us into the playoffs.

How much fun was this game to play in? Did you see how many people were out here? I live for this. This is awesome.

Rams make progress at Tosh tournament By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com LOMBARD – Jaron Hall’s spot on the all-tournament team at York’s Jack Tosh Holiday Classic tournament was a bright spot for Glenbard East’s boys basketball team. So was the fact that the Rams were competitive in every game. Unfortunately, the Rams won one game via a blowout and lost three close contests. The Rams dropped the opener 55-47 to Riverside

Brookfield after leading entering the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs closed the game on a 15-5 run to knock off East. Hall scored 25 points in that game and averaged 20.8 points per game in the Rams’ four games at the tournament. “We’re making progress towards the end,” Hall said. “We kept fighting the whole game and we just got to keep it up.” The senior guard scored 25 points in an overtime loss to Kenwood on Dec. 27. Patrick Peterkin had a double-double (13 points, 13 rebounds) in

that game. The Rams got in the win column against Bremen, 7033, on Saturday. Senior center Darryl Jones led the team with 16 points and had 12 rebounds. With a chance to finish the tournament with a .500 record, Glenbard East lost 53-50 to Rolling Meadows on Monday. The Rams again led entering the fourth quarter, but slumped down the stretch. Hall’s 3-pointer at the buzzer hit the back rim and bounced out.
