The Polo Women’s Club partnered with Crossroads Community Church to distribute donated coats and warm weather accessories at no charge to the community on Nov. 14, in Polo.

The club received over 300 coats and many warm hats, gloves, mittens, and scarves from kind donors from Polo and neighboring communities.

“We thank you for your selflessness and generosity,” said Beth Green, club member. “The remaining items were donated to The Caring Center and The Salvation Army in Sterling where they will be distributed at no cost to those in need.

The decision brought him much relief.

His entire family is incredibly proud of him and his brother, Matt, and their service.

This past Saturday, I traveled to visit my Aunt Bobbi Deen’s bake sale at her barn in Adeline. I was one of the many who were lucky enough to grow up with her traditional Christmas treats. Even better than the goodies is getting to see family.

As I drove home the other afternoon, I noticed a familiar sight in the sky.

Groups of birds in their “V” formation heading south for the winter. Their instincts told them it’s time to go to a warmer place.

I thought about God’s amazing creatures and all they do because of their instincts. Only the Creator would think to equip them with such a skill. Then, I thought about all of us and our instincts.

We are created in His image with the instinct to love.

Some days, it is easy to share love with those around us. Other days, not only is it not easy, it can be nearly impossible.

I have both kinds of days. The stress of

work, relationships, and now, the pandemic, can make us forget what we were put here to do.

I would imagine the birds flying south encounter some challenges. Still, they keep going.

They know that their destination is important and necessary. While we face challenges every day, we need to press forward and find new ways to show love to those around us.

Finding the courage to forgive others or asking for forgiveness can be big challenges that keep us from doing what we were made to do. For the times when we feel like we can’t muster the strength, we have God there to help us.

He is our example. His unending flow of love for each of us should remind us that we can and should reach out to those around us. As we enter into the season of thankfulness and joy, let’s take the time to do what we were meant to do, love one another.

I hope to see you next Sunday on Facebook Live as we keep our distance out of our love for each other. We know that we will be together again, celebrating, rejoicing, and loving.

BY KAREN MERLAK My neighborhood is getting ready for the holidays. Several houses are already adorned with Christmas lights. This year, more than others, we are all in need of celebrating the joy of the season.

For each and every day, we take the time to thank our Heavenly Father.

This morning in church, we spent time with Pastor Charlotte Hoppe online. In the comments of the church’s Facebook post, there are “good morning” messages helping us all to feel closer to one another.

This past Wednesday, Pastor Charlotte offered a midweek prayer time. In Pine Creek, we know what a blessing Charlotte is for our church family. We are especially glad to share her with our community. Come and join us on Facebook Live for these weekly events.

Time seems to move at an ever rapid pace. I am working from home until the end of the year. The busy days fade into busy nights with many homework projects to finish. There are just a few weeks left in this semester. As always, I’ll be glad for a short break.

COVID-19 UPDATE

12 deaths, 321 cases in a week

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@shawmedia.com The Ogle County Health Department reported 44 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, Nov. 24, totaling 2,632.

One hundred and thirty two cases were reported Saturday through Monday. 321 new cases have come in the past week. Ages and locations of the individuals that test positive are not being released to protect their privacy.

The OCHD has reported 12 new deaths in the past week. Ogle County has seen a total of 26 COVID-19 deaths since the start of the pandemic.

Recoveries of documented cases stand at 2,009, with 67 new ones reported Tuesday. The OCHD took to its Facebook page on Nov. 20 in response to reports it’s defiance of guidelines in the county.

“We have witnessed and are receiving several complaints about local businesses that are not following tier 3 mitigations,” the post said. “This behavior is hurting our response efforts. We understand businesses are attempting to make money but packing businesses, not following social distancing and not masking is putting lives in danger. We do not want to fall back into a full shut down of the state. Please choose your actions wisely. Help us keep Ogle County residents safe!”

The Illinois Department of Public Health site said Tuesday that there are 906 cases in the zip code that includes Rochelle, Creston and White Rock.

Stillman Valley has 150 cases, Byron has 505 cases and Davis Junction has 158 cases.

Oregon and Mt. Morris have 274 and 156 cases, respectively.

Polo has 132 cases, Leaf River has 72 cases and Forreston has 93 cases.

The Sauk Valley as a whole reported three additional coronavirus deaths and 302 new cases Monday.

Whiteside County on Monday announced 49 new cases of COVID-19. The new cases involve seven people younger than 20, eight in their 20s,

six in their 30s, five in their 40s, eight in their 50s, four in their 60s, three in their 70s and 10 older than 80.

The county also saw 29 recoveries Monday.

Total new cases in Whiteside County for the week of November 16-22 dropped compared to the previous week, from 652 new cases to 556. New cases in the younger-than-20 age group rose, from 79 to 81, while in the older-than-80 age group, new cases went from 49 to 54, but overall, age groups saw slight declines. The 60-69 age group saw the sharpest decline, from 89 cases for the week ending Nov. 15 to 56 last week.

Even with that decline, there were more cases for the recent 2-week span, 1,176, than for the previous 2 weeks, 692.

Lee County announced 90 new cases Monday, covering a period that includes Saturday and Sunday. Of those, five are from the Dixon Correctional Center and six are from Franklin Grove Living and Rehab. An additional 43 people have recovered.

Carroll County announced one COVID-related death on Monday, involving a person in his or her 60s. Carroll County also had 31 new cases, involving two children, two teens, three people in their 20s, three in their 30s, four in their 40s, six in their 50s, four in their 60s, six in their 70s and one in his or her 80s.

Ogle court proceedings halted due to COVID-19 Most Ogle County court proceedings will not take place for the next two weeks at the Ogle County Judicial Center, after employees working in two offices tested positive for coronavirus.

A weekend news release from 15th Judicial Circuit Chief Judge Robert T. Hanson said the State’s Attorney’s Office and the Probation Office both reported a “COVID-19 breakout.”

As a result, the Judicial Center, 105 S. Fifth St., will remain closed until Dec. 7 “to ensure we control the spread and that the public is not exposed to the virus by Ogle County/Court employees,” Hanson said in the release.

Criminal bond hearings, and emergency matters regarding petitions for orders of protection, orders for stalking and no contact, juvenile matters and bonafide emergency child support and parenting time and decision-making disputes will move ahead with a limited staff, the release said.

All other cases scheduled to take place before Dec. 7 will be rescheduled.

Hanson did not specify when or how many county or court employees tested positive.

As of Sunday, Ogle County has reported 2,567 confirmed coronavirus cases and 25 deaths from COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health.

The release said: “Upon a COVID19 breakout within the Ogle County State’s Attorney’s Office and the Ogle County Probation Office, Ogle County Health Director Kyle Auman recommended a two week pause of operation of the Ogle County Judicial Center to ensure we control the spread and that the public is not exposed to the virus by Ogle County/Court employees.”

All cases falling within that time frame will be notified of a future court date.

The Ogle County Judicial Center will reopen on Monday, Dec. 7, at 8:30 a.m.

Determination of a bonafide emergency child support or parenting time/decision making dispute issue shall be determined by the Judge before whom the case is pending.

There are currently 14 positive cases, 132 close contacts out and 83 staff and students waiting for COVID-19 to be ruled out within the district.

“This decision is based on quarantine numbers, impact on staffing and information from the Ogle County Health Department (OCHD) that indicates they have a clear picture that there is a spread of the virus occurring among students in the district,” Mahoney said.

The remote learning period is planned to end on Dec. 2. If necessary staff is available, in-person learning will begin again on Dec. 3.

All extra-curricular activities will be placed on hold for 14 days.

The OCHD recently recommended all county schools cease in-person learning from Thanksgiving break until the end of the semester due to recent high COVID-19 case numbers and holiday gathering concerns.

At its Monday meeting, the Oregon School Board unanimously decided it would not follow that advice and continue with in-person learning as long as it could.

The statement Oregon School Board President Bryan Wills read at the Monday meeting said the district’s decision did not mean a shift to remote learning wouldn’t happen during the period, as it has.

Mahoney said he’s started receiving emails from confused parents asking why the school is closing after saying it wouldn’t at Monday’s meeting.

Tuesday test results were the cause for the change. Mahoney said before those, there was no need for remote learning. The district worked with the health department to have Wednesday be in-person to provide parents as much time as possible to prepare.

Finally, within this region, there

are 42 available, staffed ICU beds out of 179 total, a decrease of six from Sunday.

The Illinois Department of Public Health on Monday announced 8,322 new cases and 47 deaths. There have now been 664,620 cases and 11,552 deaths statewide.

he weather has been hard to believe and has helped getting outside fall work done.

Of course for me to get the big flower bed cleaned out, it would have to stay this way all winter. That will probably not be the case!

I did get to the library this week since someone told me I would probably be safe there from the virus. Are we really safe anywhere?

I also popped into the post office for stamps since the mail is my connection to the outside world and I do still write many letters even in this world of email.

I had responded back to Mary in Green Bay, Wisconsin who sent me all the stuff on Anna Parmelee and George Read. Somehow I left off the zip code but all the rest of the address was correct. I got the letter back and I had to redo it. So the zip code is important.

So I went to the library to find out what was in the Tri-County Press about the start of Edgewood Golf Course that had been west of Polo.

The original article in the Dixon paper had been written in 1938 about the start of the golf course. But I could not make out the dates in the article.

Then Linda Gall sent me an article again from the Dixon paper dated Aug. 2, 1928 about eight ladies who motored to Polo to play golf at Edgewood and they had lunch at the club house. So now we are in the 1920s.

The next article she found in the Dixon paper was dated June 1, 1918 and the Tri-County Cup Tournament was been held with some of it at Edgewood in Polo. Now we are back further and we did eventually find where the course started in 1915 and they eventually paid $25 a year for use of the pasture.

So when I got to the library, I started with 1915 in the Tri-County Press newspapers to see what they had to say. I was interested to know what church had been moved near to the course and when all that was done.

I found nothing in 1915, 1916, 1917, and I was just starting in the spring of 1918 when I had to leave. Now the library is closed due to the virus

OHS graduate coaches Northern to first MAC title H ow about some feel-good news.

For the first time in program history, the Northern Illinois University women’s cross country team won the Mid American Conference title. Why that is significant is because Oregon High School grad Adrian Myers was the architect of the endeavor.

“This is what we said we were going to do from the moment I came in the door and as a coach, and leader of the program, I wanted to make sure that I was a man of my word,” said Myers of winning the conference title. “This was the right team at the right time, in a very challenging time in all of our lives. They showed a lot of grit and growth, and they really embodied the Huskie cross country experience, to come from the bot-

tom of the conference to now bringing home a championship to DeKalb.”

Myers, who is in his sixth year as head coach of the team, had to sweat out the final results. The top four teams were only separated by 13 points, with the Huskies edging Toledo 84-87 for the MAC crown.

Last year, runner-up NIU lost by two points.

In a post on Facebook, an elated Myers praised those who had an impact upon him, including some key figures from Oregon.

“I am not who I am as a son, brother, husband, father and professional without the work of men like Rick Wemple, Bob Schultz, Greg Harger, Art Carlson, John Bothe, John Axelson, Mark Shaulis, and Jim Spratt who each showed me the impact of a good coach in a young man’s life. This sport has given more to my life than I could ever return.”

Old postcard offers glimpse of Oregon’s past Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon has researched the people, places and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is one of a series of the articles he has written.

BY OTTO DICK One hundred and 14 years ago, on May 14, 1906, a postcard was postmarked at the Oregon, Illinois Post Office.

It was sent by Ida Matmiller Wade (1866-1934) to her aunt, Julia Parshall in Erie, Pennsylvania.

It pictures Jake the donkey, pulling Ida’s son, Rex Wade (1896-1961) and three of his friends.

The scene is looking north on N. 3rd Street where one can see the old (1862) stone church (the Church of God, originally St. Mary’s Catholic Church)and the 1880s Schiller Piano Factory owned by F. G. Jones.

In 1836 the first home on the town plot can be seen across the street south of the piano factory. This house was built by Jonathon W. Jenkins and his son, Lamoile T. Jenkins was the first male child born in Oregon at this house.

Jonathon Jenkins was one of the 112 men indicted for the shooting and killing of John and William Driscoll, two of the notorious outlaws who infested the country in 1841.

The home was made of logs as at that time there were no saw mills.

This house was used for many purposes-a residence, a hotel, a boarding house, a courthouse and a church.

It is said that the first sermon ever preached in Oregon was preached in that house by John Baker, a Baptist minister.

The 1870s Reporter office, Pike Dernier’s Rock River Broom Company, where city hall was located at the time and another broom factory, the Rock River Broom Factory, L. L. Woodville, proprietor, C. L. McDowell’s Blacksmith and Horseshoeing Barn were all locate on the east side where this photo was taken with Jake, Rex and his friends.

Across the street to the west was Albert J. Fouch’s Livery Stable and south of that the mid 1840s Rock River House, originally the Moore Hotel, later named the Oregon House, the Black Hawk Hotel and is now called the Patchwork Inn. Next, south on the west, was the photography studio of Charles L. Curtis, a pioneer photographer, who very possibly took the photo.

Photos supplied by Otto Dick nissippi Hotel. Jonathon died in 1913 and willed the hotel to Ida. She and her husband Harry E. Wade (1866-1952) an Oregon dentist and mayor but not to be confused with his grandson, dentist and mayor Harry F. Wade, then owned and managed the Sinnissippi Hotel.

The hotel passed out of the Wade family’s hands in 1960 and was razed in 1971 despite efforts to preserve it which reached all the way to the

Illinois Supreme Court.

Dentist Dr. Harry E. Wade and his son Dr. Harry F. Wade also a dentist both served as mayors of Oregon.

Rex shown in the photo with Jake the donkey was the son of Dr. Harry E. Wade and the brother of Dr. Harry F. Wade.

Rex Wade was part owner of the Sinnissippi Hotel with his sister Phyllis before Charlie Mongan obtained the Hotel.

The Sinnissippi Hotel was built in 1849 by Emerson Construction and torn down in 1971 after serving Oregon for 132 years.

Several businesses occupied store fronts on Washington St. Over 132 years a lot of memories.

I remember eating my first pork chop dinner at the Curtis Diner located at the Sinnissippi Hotel.

From December to February, Carroll, Ogle, Lee and Whiteside counties all share a 40% chance of logging above-normal precipitation, but have the same “equal chance” of recording normal temperatures, based on the National Weather Service’s Central Region Climate Outlook.

Those predictions, according to the NWS report, are the result of a strengthening La Niña weather event, which has been ongoing since the beginning of the year.

Timothy Gunkel, a meteorologist with the NWS Office in the Quad Cities, said it’s hard to say how the current La Niña will compare to the one that ended in 2018 because it’s just starting, but in general, the weather events come with similar conditions.

La Niña conditions – cooler, wetter conditions in the north and warmer, drier conditions in the south – manifest when water temperatures in the Pacific Ocean cool.

“Our area could see some higher precipitation, but that doesn’t just mean snow,” Gunkel said.

“We could see other forms of precipitation, like

It’s too early to forecast whether the Sauk Valley will fall on the warmer or cooler side of average winter temperatures, but most La Niña models predict the area has a 33% chance of experiencing non-normal temperatures, Gunkel said.

“If [La Niña] leads to changes in weather patterns, we’ll most likely see colder temperatures in the northwest and wetter weather to east,” he

The NWS report predicts the La Niña event will peak in intensity between December and February and will weaken in the spring.

That peak could be characterized by storms that bring high winds and drop heavy precipitation, both of which could affect soil conditions in the spring, he said.

“It’s too early to tell what [La Niña] could lead to after the spring, but these anomalies can have lasting effects,” Gunkel said.

Staffing has been an issue due to COVID-19 quarantines, Mahoney said. In the past three weeks at all buildings, the district has been 1-2 staff members away from having to shut down. The junior high and high school have been particularly challenging, Mahoney said.

Shortened staffing has impacted the quality of education, Mahoney said. Quarantined teachers had been streaming into class and staff had been shifted around, which had a negative impact on morale.

The district’s health staff is also currently bearing the load of contact tracing, which is a responsibility the OCHD handed back over in recent weeks.

“Our elementary school nurse, Sharon Hoover, said yesterday it occupied 100 percent of her time,” Mahoney said. “She was communicating with families and teachers.

We might’ve staffed that position differently if OCHD told us at the beginning of the year we’d have to do that.”

Mahoney said the two week break will bring his district back to full staff. There won’t be additional mitigations after students return from

The last day of the fall semester is Dec. 18. Mahoney wants those last two weeks with students and said having them in-person will make a “drastic” impact educationally. At Monday’s board meeting, Mahoney said he’s spoken with local mental health experts that said they’ve seen an uptick in suicide ideation in students that have been away from the classroom.

“That was in the statement we made,” Mahoney said, “That suicide ideation issue, we take it seriously and students are best served in person.”

Mahoney hasn’t seen any families request to move to remote for the entirety of the end of the semester, as OCHD recommended, but families have been given the option.

It seems families may be on board with the school district’s unwavering desire to teach in person.

“For us, the question we always get is, ‘How’s it going?’ I always say, ‘At this moment, it’s going well.’

We’ve known we’re susceptible for this to occur,” Mahoney said. “I was pleased it’s been this long. We anticipated it earlier.”

Three local nonprofits are offering remote learning centers to families during the closure. Lutheran Outdoor Ministries Center, Lorado Taft Field Campus and Stronghold Camp & Retreat Center have limited spots available and there is a “very small” fee.

The City of Oregon has provided PPE and disinfectant and the Oregon Public Library has assisted the nonprofit facilities with internet.

That’s why this is getting to be one

big soap opera.

Though their motives might be good, I still think the IHSA is making a mistake by delaying sports.

Either play them or don’t play them.

What gives you reason to think things will be any different from a political or health perspective a weeks or months from now?

Additionally, if sports are allowed to start back up, say in the spring, it isn’t fair to pile winter and fall sports on top of already established spring sports.

Christmas is nearing and children are getting excited for the arrival of Santa so Polo’s Christmas Star Project has kicked into gear.

“We, the Pine Creek Christian Church, would greatly appreciate the help of the community by choosing one or more stars to gift,” said Sheryl Hopkins, church member.

The project was organized to help low income families in the Polo School District to be able to confidentially provide for their children (ages infant through high school) with gifts during the holiday season.

“Records indicate this has been a tradition since at least 2007 – each year averaging over 100 participants,” Hopkins said.

A Christmas tree will be placed in the lobby of the First State Bank Shannon-Polo by Tuesday, Dec. 1. Stars will also be available at participating churches.

“The tree will be filled with ‘Star’ tags of children. Age, size and wish list of each child will be on the back of the tag,”

The Polo School District has decided to stay with in-person learning through the end of the semester.

The Ogle County Health Department recently recommended all county schools close following Thanksgiving until mid-January due to increased local spread and holiday gathering concerns.

“At this time our numbers didn’t warrant closing,” Superintendent Kelly Mandrell said.

“School is the best place for the students. Parents can choose remote learning for that time period. We want to give families both options.”

Mandrell said she understands how fast plans could change if there was spread inside the district. Earlier this semester, the district had to do a two-week adaptive pause of Cen-

tennial Elementary School due to a COVID-19 outbreak.

Polo’s quarantine numbers go up and down, Mandrell said, but the rate of actual positive tests has been “extremely low.”

In Mandrell’s letter to parents following the meeting and decision, highlighted and in bold text is the following: “If you are planning to gather over the holidays, we recommend and encourage you consider a temporary remote learning environment to allow for proper quarantine and control of any spread of COVID-19.”

Multiple area school districts have dealt with staffing shortages due to COVID-19 quarantines.

“Size is our strength,” Mandrell said. “We’ve pulled together. Different people are filling in including the principals and myself. We’re working together to give kids the best education they can.’

Family, friends gather for one-year anniversary of deadly Rock River accident

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@shawmedia.com Penny Lee was eating lunch at Bela’s Cafe in Oregon on Nov. 20, 2019 and heard sirens.

Those sirens were headed to the Rock River near the Oregon dam, where Lee’s nephew, Kent “Bud” Dearborn Jr., 33, of Polo and James Swift, 64, of Forreston had gone missing in a boating accident while fishing.

Swift’s body was found on Jan. 3 near the Dixon dam. Dearborn Jr. remains missing.

Family and friends of both men gathered near the river last Friday night for a candlelight memorial to mark the year anniversary of the accident.

The gathering consisted of 50-75 people that first gathered in the parking lot by the dam and then walked to the Illinois 64 bridge to drop flowers into the river.

The crowd then returned to the parking lot where some gave remembrances of the two men and then toasted them with Kent “Bud” Dearborn, Jr. a drink.

Dozens of river searches in the past year, both by civilians and law enforcement, have come up empty after tips and potential sightings of Dearborn.

“A couple times they thought they found something and you get your hopes up and end up heartbroken all over again,” Lee said. “You look every time you go over the bridge and feel that numbness.”

Lee said the family has discussed a memorial for Dearborn, but no plans are in place as of yet.

She still has hope that something will be found to bring closure.

Lee also lit a lantern in memory of Pat Connor, Dearborn’s uncle who spoke at the first candlelight vigil in 2019. Connor passed away earlier this month.

Two Ogle County businesses receive tourism awards

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@shawmedia.com Brion Brooks called the Village Bakery being named an Illinois Maker during the COVID-19 pandemic a “parting of the clouds.”

“It was a short ray of sunshine to get this news,” Brooks, executive director of the Village of Progress that runs the Village Bakery in Oregon, said.

“It was very gratifying to be recognized.”

The Village Bakery, along with Kennay Farms Distilling in Rochelle, were among 31 businesses named Illinois Makers by the Illinois Office of Tourism last week.

The businesses were recognized by the Illinois Made program, which inspires locals and visitors to discover hidden gems offering unique products, stories and experiences all around the state.

Launched in 2016, Illinois Made spotlights the people, products and experiences authentic to Illinois and inspires residents and visitors to explore these iconic destinations when traveling the state or in their own backyard. The program currently features over 175 makers.

“I’m sure the award was because our business model is unique,” Brooks said. “It’s encouraging that our novel goal is appreciated and recognized.

We were really surprised that there were only a handful in the region. It feels like a rare atmosphere.”

The Village Bakery’s purpose is to employ people with disabilities and foster relationships

Brooks believes the award will help the Village Bakery and the community, showcasing it as a friendly place to be, live and visit.

“I just think what really captures imaginations is a business that intentionally wants to integrate people with disabilities with employees,” Brooks said. “It’s our entire mission. I’ve had so many customers tell me it feels different to walk in here compared to other places.”

Kennay Farms Distillery Director of Marketing, Aubrey Quinn, said the honor and exposure were appreciated during what has been a challenging year amid COVID-19.

Being named an Illinois Maker came due to the uniqueness of the distillery’s experience and

products, Quinn said.

“I think it’s the family aspect,” Quinn said.

“From harvesting to distilling, it’s all done by a member of the family. It all comes from 10-15 miles away. The family took 2.5 years to renovate it and the historic space sets us apart.”

Quinn said that business at the moment is slower due to COVID-19 and state restrictions on indoor dining and drinking, but she’s hopeful for the future.

“We hope we can have a good holiday season with events and entertainment,” Quinn said.

“We’re hoping things pick up and we’ve had to adjust hours and staffing. But we’re optimistic about the future.”

Nate Rogers slated to lead Oregon High softball

BY ERIC INGLES eingles@shawmedia.com The Oregon High softball team didn’t have to look far for its new coach.

Nate Rogers was named the new head coach of the Hawks this week, taking over a program in which he had been helping out Dave Duke before the season was cut short in the spring.

Duke coached the Hawks in 2019 and was preparing to coach them in 2020 before the pandemic put an end to the season.

“I felt like it was a good time for me to step in and help with the transition,” Rogers said. “I think that what got me the most interested in this job is just that we have a lot of hard-working young ladies and girls who have put a lot of work into the program. We see a lot of good things on the horizon for them. We’re excited for the future.”

Rogers is no stranger to Oregon – he previously led the Hawks’ wrestling program and was an assistant with the football program. He is also a teacher in the district.

“The biggest thing is, Nate is an outstanding teacher, educator and relationship-developer with kids,” Athletic Director Mike Lawton said.

“He just has that ability to connect with kids, in the classroom and now an opportunity to carry that over into softball, which is huge for any coach, because obviously coaches are teachers first, and when you’re an outstanding teacher and you have the ability to take those out of the classroom and into the arena or onto the field, that’s huge.”

Rogers knows a lot of the players already

through his work alongside Duke, as well as his work at the youth level before that, and his daughter, Abigail, is a utility player on the team.

“There’s a comfort level and a trust level,” he said. “And I’ve had most of these girls as a teacher, too. That helps. When you have those relationships already built, it can make those things go a lot easier.”

While some spring sports teams will head into the 2021 season with effectively two freshmen classes – one class of true freshmen and one of sophomores who did not have a high school season in 2020 – Oregon is pretty well off, having fielded a largely young roster in 2019 with eight freshmen and six sophomores.

But there is still an uphill battle with sports activities suspended for the time being and no telling when a softball season actually will be played.

“In some ways, we have a lot of experience coming into the season,” Rogers said. “There’s other things we want to be working on that we just can’t work on in terms of team cohesiveness and just laying the groundwork for what we want to do.”

Kable Printing plant to be partially town down

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@shawmedia.com Roughly 25 percent of the old Kable Printing plant in Mt. Morris will be demolished in the coming weeks, Village Trustee and former Kable employee Jerry Stauffer said.

About 230,000 square feet of the building will come down including the east end offices and the south side ink farm and press rooms. The area has been fenced off and preliminary demolition work is being done.

“It’ll be fairly soon,” Stauffer said. “It’s all to upgrade the property. The rest of it may stay and be renovated and marketed. With the fencing up, they’ll start in the center and work their way out. We probably won’t see much until they get to the outside wall. They said they’ll be taking down the old smokestack. I know people want to see that.”

Stauffer said the demolition will likely take months. The property is owned by Phoenix Investors of Milwaukee.

The plant was in operation for 114 years and shut down in 2013 and also operated under the names of Quebecor and World Color.

Stauffer was employed at the plant for over 20 years. He said it’ll be tough to see it partially town down after its value to the village and area over the years.

“A good majority of Mt. Morris people worked there and it was their livelihood,” Stauffer said. “It fed families.

People from Sterling, Dixon, Polo, Lanark and Mt. Carroll worked there. It drew employment in a 40 mile radius. It was the biggest in Ogle County.”

The parts of the facility that will come down have been remodeled “too many times” and need to come down, Stauffer said. 650,000 square feet will be kept.

“I’m a realist,” Stauffer said. “Nothing lasts forever. It was harder to see it close after trying to extend its life.”

Hello and Happy Holidays t begins to look a lot like Christmas when twinkling lights brighten up homes inside and out. Few things liven up the season more than holiday decorations, particularly clear and colored lights.

Prior to taking out the lights, ladder and thermos of coffee to get you through the job, it’s important to note that there are right and wrong ways to hang holiday lights.

• Sketch out your plan. Start by taking a few photos of your home from various vantage points. Print out the photos on regular paper so that you can draw your lighting arrangement and decoration placement right on the photos to see how things will look.

• Measure the area. Use a measuring tape to roughly

measure the width and height of eaves or other areas of the home where you plan to hang light strands. Calculate how much overall footage you will need so you can purchase all of the lights in one shopping trip.

• Test the lights first. Plug in the lights to be sure all strands are operational.

• Begin where the lights will be plugged in. Start where the lights will be plugged in and then work your way around the house.

• Add to shrubs and trees. Lights also can adorn shrubs and trees.

Lowes Home Improvement says a good rule of thumb is 100 lights for every 11⁄2-feet of tree or shrub to cover. A 6-foot evergreen needs at least 400 lights for a basic level of lighting.

• Exercise extreme caution. Accidents can happen when stringing lights. While many professionals use harnesses, homeowners are not always so cautious. Utilize a spotter to hold the ladder and make sure things are safe. Never set foot on a wet or icy roof. Do not attempt to string lights in inclement weather.

• Know the wattage. Each outlet can generally hold about 17 amps or 1,870 watts if the lights are not sharing a circuit with another outlet, says Parrish. Plan accordingly to ensure you have enough power to handle your lights.

• Use plastic clips. Plastic light clips hang strands along eaves and gables. They’re specially designed for hanging lights over the gutters.

Some slip under the edges of roof shingles. Lights can be hung without staples or nails, which can damage exterior surfaces. Plastic zip-ties or deck clips also can attach lights along a handrail.

• Use only outdoor extension cords. Be sure the extension cords you use are designed specifically for outdoor use.

Why are Christmas colors red and green?

any people may not get in the holiday spirit without decorations and all the trimmings. Chances are strong that if you have containers full of items just waiting to see the light of day again this holiday season, those items are red or green or some combination thereof.

Red and green have become the traditional colors of Christmas, just as blue and white symbolizes Chanukah. But how did this color palette come to evolve?

Just like many traditions of Christmas, the red and green scheme has origins that pre-date the Christian celebration. Christmas has borrowed from many of the customs of winter solstice celebrations of ancient peoples, including the Celts. Ancient Celtic people revered holly plants, believing they brought beauty and good fortune in the middle of winter — a time when the landscape is normally bleak and holly plants thrive and stand out. Celts would regularly bring in sprigs of holly and decorate their homes with the plants, which feature shiny, serrated leaves and bright, red berries, as a way to guarantee a prosperous new year. Holly also came to be associated with the crown of thorns Jesus Christ was forced to wear during his crucifixion.

The custom of using red and green continued into the 14th century. Dr. Spike Bucklow, a research scientist at the University of Cambridge, says red and green also were used to paint medieval rood screens, which were partitions installed in churches to separate the congregation from

the priest and altar. Dr. Bucklow notes that Victorians also extended the association of these colors as a physical boundary to another boundary: the marking of the end of the old year and the beginning of a new one at Christmastime.

While red and green had associations with Christmas in early times through holly and other sources, the connection was perhaps best solidified thanks to a man named Haddon Sundblom. Sundblom was an artist commissioned in 1931 by the Coca-Cola company to create an image of Santa Claus for the company’s upcoming holiday ads. Until this point, versions of Santa were rarely consistent, with his clothing vacillating between green, blue and red. He also wasn’t the plump, jolly fellow associated with Christmas as we know him today, but rather thin and elf-like. Sundblom portrayed him as a chubby man wearing red robes, likely as a nod to Coca-Cola’s own red logo, even though the company denies the connection. Santa was featured in front of a green background. The ads proved popular and Sundblom’s Santa became the preferred depiction. Santa’s red robes perfectly complemented the green background and other green components of the holiday, such as Christmas trees and holly, that already had been solidified as Christmas imagery.

Color plays a strong role in creating Christmas nostalgia. Red and green are put on vivid display throughout the season.

‘Getting children access is one impact I wanted to make’

A new program in conjunction with the Mt. Morris Library and the Oregon School District has helped the Oregon Public Library Executive Director to get library cards to some out-of-district patrons, maybe the population that needs it most— kids.

All students in the school district are eligible for library cards at both libraries.

“It’d be nice if in the state you could get one anywhere, but you can’t,” Lombardo said. “Getting children access is one impact I wanted to make to start out. Non-district resident fee is $120. Mt. Morris is a smaller amount. Working with the school, we can provide all kids cards.”

Lombardo is unsure how many kids will get library cards in response to the program, but she’s already seen 20 families reach out to get cards. There are residents in areas between the two towns that aren’t in either library district that will now have access to both.

The state recently passed an act for kids at or below the poverty line to get access to cards, but Lombardo

is unsure how that will be rolled out and thinks her program will cover more people.

The Oregon Public Library has about 2,200 patrons currently in its district of 6,100 people. She hopes that will grow due to the program.

“It promotes us and they can use the library along with school,” Lombardo said.

Oregon’s library has expanded its electronic resources due to COVID19. Lombardo said that wouldn’t have happened if not for the pandemic. Internet hotspots have been in demand to help families with remote learning.

“The area is bad for getting a good connection,” Lombardo said.

“We had a number of calls that wanted one. One was a mother with three kids doing e learning with not enough bandwidth.”

The library will be offering space for families to use for remote learning on a scheduled basis with limited capacity as the school deals with a two-week adaptive pause to in-person learning due to a COVID19 outbreak.

The library has been operating in a different capacity since the pandemic and is prepared if it has to close indoors due to elevated spread in the community.

“Staff has worked so hard on ways to reach out and stay open,” Lombardo said. “If we have to move back to curbside or close, we’ll answer phones and get materials to them.

We rely on our delivery system from library to library, that sounds like it would be able to keep going.

We’re prepared more than we were in March.”

Ogle Fair Association held its annual meeting High hopes for 2021 after cancellation of the 2020 fair due to COVID-19 pandemic

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@shawmedia.com The Ogle County Fair Association didn’t have much to discuss at its annual meeting on Nov. 14 thanks to the 2020 cancellation of the fair due to COVID-19.

The fair association still held its meeting to meet its bylaw obligations. Masks were worn and members socially distanced. The usual potluck dinner that comes with the meeting had to be scrapped.

“Basically, it’s just going through what happened this year, which was nothing,” President Tom Simpson said. “With it being a unique year, all our 2020 contacts, we talked with them and moved them to 2021. Planning has been done, there’s just fine tuning to do.”

The association voted on new officers at the meeting, naming Tom Simpson president, Brad Larson vice president, Roseanne Hurst treasurer and Brenda Holm secretary. Tom Snodgrass was named Volunteer of the Year.

A plaque was also presented to the family of the late Harlan Holm at the meeting. Holm, a former president and member of the board, passed away earlier this fall.

“We’re definitely going to miss him,” Simpson said. “He did a lot for the fair and his heart and soul was in it. There will be a few bumps in the road. We’ve all learned from him and we’ll try to carry on his legacy.”

Simpson said updates regarding next year’s fair will start to be put out on Facebook as the months go by. The 2021 fair dates are July 28 through Aug. 1.

“We don’t know what our future holds,” Simpson said of planning during COVID-19. “With this past year, everything has changed. Will it change what we do next year?

I hope not. We have all our traditions and we’d like to continue them. As we get closer, things may change. We’ll have recommendations from the state and the Ogle County Health Department. I want to believe it’ll be a normal year.”

As the world was closing down, Meggan Dickson-Grennan, was sweeping up the dust and hauling in new furniture.

Because of closures and mitigations, w@sh didn’t host a large second anniversary or grand re-opening party.

While the COVID-19 pandemic has put a damper on 2020, the Oregon Chamber and its ambassadors made sure to give credit where credit was due, and reached out to Dickson-Grennan to congratulate her efforts with a ribbon cutting in honor of the w@sh expansion. “w@sh has more than doubled in working space and employees,” said Liz Vos, chamber director. “The Chamber recognizes Meggan’s hard work and continued dedication and investment in our community.”

“What I see every day seems like no big deal.

It’s refreshing to see w@sh though other people’s eyes. Thank you for acknowledging my hard work,” Dickson-Grennan said.

Library Petitions Available Nominating petitions for four board positions at Polo Public Library District are available for pickup at the library.

Four of the seven positions will be open for election to four-year terms. The election will be held on April 6, 2021.

Library board members must be, on the date of the election, a citizen of the United States, at least 18 years old, a registered voter, a resident of the State of Illinois and must have resided in the library district (Buffalo Township) at least one year at the time he or she files nomination papers.

To be considered for election, candi-

dates must file a petition with 13 signatures of qualified voters who live within the library district.

The candidates must complete a statement of candidacy, a statement of economic interests, and may complete an optional notarized loyalty oath.

All necessary forms are included in the candidate’s election packet available at the library.

Darrell was a gifted handyman, mechanic, hunter and jack of all trades.

He really enjoyed sharing those gifts with his children and grandchildren. He loved fishing and telling stories about all of his adventures.

Some of those adventures happened while he served as a soldier in the US

Army.

Darrell was a truck driver for many years. His CB radio handle was “Popcorn” because Cleo would make popcorn for his road trips every night.

He worked at Quebcor Printing for 17 years before he retired in 1998. Darrell loved to have fun. His sense of humor was still sharp. But more than that, Darrell was a man of faith, a kind, gentle, do anything for you man. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Oregon.

Darrell is survived by his loving wife, Cleo, his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brother, Glenn (Laura) Bauer; sisters-in-law: Erika Bauer, Darlene C. Bauer, Zeldean Paskiewicz; brother-in-law, Rick (Marie)

Scharr; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by his parents; son, Jeff; four sisters; and five brothers.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a private family funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary Catholic Church, Oregon with Rev. Joseph Naill, pastor, as celebrant.

Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Oregon.

He was employed for over 30 years as a federal commissioner, labor law judge and arbitrator.

Bill was a 708 Ogle County Board member, a trustee for Oregon Fire Department, a community advisor for Oregon’s two group homes and a volunteer for Village of Progress, Oregon for over 20 years.

He was also a member and elder at Christ Our Savior Lutheran Church, Dixon.

Above all though, family was most important to Bill.

He is survived by his wife, Lorretta Sigler of Oregon; daughter, Gwen (Rob) Zimmerman of Oregon; son, William (Julie) Sigler, Jr. of North Carolina; grandchildren, Candice Smidt, Michael (Samantha) Smidt, and Lindsey (Samuel) Gendusa, all of Oregon; great-grandson, Dean Anthony Gendusa; brother, Henry (Audrey) Sigler of Chicago; sister, Pamela (David) Mad-

sen of Oak Lawn; and special friends, Samantha Dopke and Joy Holden.

He was predeceased by his parents and daughter, Tammy Rae Sigler.

Marvin would always have a smile

and a hug for whoever greeted him. He was a 39-year employee of Burlington Northern Rail Road and member of the Rochelle Area CB Club. Marvin and Mary enjoyed raising their family in Rochelle for the past 60 years.

Marvin is preceded in death by his wife, Mary; four brothers, Ronnie, Leo, Wally and Keith Wagner; and three sisters, Lois Ferris, Eileen Ford and Linda Knaple.

A private family funeral service was Monday, Nov. 22, at Unger-Horner Funeral Home in Rochelle. Burial was at Oak Knoll Cemetery in Sterling.

OREGON – Darrell James Bauer, of Oregon, passed away Saturday, November 21, 2020 at the age of 88 with his wife by his side.

He was born Oct. 25, 1932 in Lima, Wisconsin the son of August and Catherine (Bauer) Bauer. Darrell and Cleo Scharr met at their favorite dance hall.

They were married Aug. 6, 1955 in Lima and celebrated their 65th anniversary this year.

OREGON – William E. “Bill” Sigler Sr., 78, of Oregon, died Tuesday, November 17, 2020 in Javon Bea Hospital, Rockford.

He was born Jan. 12, 1942 in Chicago, the son of Henry and Harriet (Albright) Sigler. He married Lorretta Bone on Aug. 5, 1961 in Farmington, Missouri.

Bill was a graduate of Calumet High School, Chicago and Olive-Harvey Community College. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.

MARVIN E. WAGNER ROCHELLE – Marvin Eugene Wagner, 86, of Rochelle, passed away Tuesday, November 17, 2020 at the Serenity Hospice & Home in Oregon after battling a variety of medical ailments.

Marvin was born April 18, 1934, the son of Glenn and Loretta (Hubbard) Wagner, in Polo. He married Mary Rose Cook on Aug. 13, 1955 in Sterling.

Nov. 21 Andrew D. Stroud, 22, of Mt. Morris was arrested at 5:58 a.m. for driving while under the influence of alcohol after deputies along with Mt Morris Fire Department, Mt Morris EMS and Oregon EMS responded to a two vehicle accident with entrapment at the intersection of Mud Creek Road and Rock Road.

After an investigation it was learned that Stroud failed to stop at the stop intersection where he struck an oncoming vehicle.

Stroud and his passenger, Nolan M. Wortman, 21, of Stillman Valley, were transported to KSB hospital for non life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the second vehicle, a 17-year-old male, from Mt. Morris was transported to KSB hospital by Oregon EMS. The vehicles were removed from the location by D&W Towing and Neilson’s Towing. Stroud was also cited for disobeying a stop sign, improper lane usage and failure to reduce speed to

avoid an accident. Stroud was given an I-bond and released to hospital staff for treatment.
