IN BRIEF Citizens of Polo can now pick up candidate petitions for the April 6, 2021 consolidated election at the Polo City Hall, 115 S. Franklin Ave. Filing dates for candidates for the

consolidated election are from Dec. 14 through Dec. 21, 2020.

Offices to be elected are: mayor, city clerk, city treasurer, alderman for ward I, ward II and ward III. All are for a fouryear term and alderman ward II is for a

two-year term.

Petitions may be picked up at City Hall, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. For more information call Sydney Bartelt, Polo city clerk at 815-946-3514.

Another season has come to an end as we prepare for falling leaves and the harvest. Even my late-blooming tree has started changing colors. Autumn has been my favorite season for most of my life. This is the day the Lord has made, for that, we will rejoice.

This morning in church, we were greeted by June Schafer. Pastor Charlotte Hoppe brought our message for the morning. Our service takes place at 9:30am in our new building. We are also online on our church’s Facebook page.

This coming Saturday, our church will be having a garage sale in our old church building. We will not be selling the church pews, however, there will be several other items from the building.

Come and join us from 8am to 2pm on Lowell Park Road, using the Penn Corner Road entrance.

This past week has been full of celebrations. I started the week with my work anniversary and ended with my birthday. On Friday, I spent my 50th birthday answering several t e x t messages, phone calls, and Facebook messages from friends far and near, In the evening, my children hosted a Zoom meeting with me. Stephanie, João, Matt, and Clint joined in on the fun. We started by catching up with one another.

Stephanie shared the happy news about her recent promotion to Trend Coordinator at her Minnesota employer.

Matt and Clint shared updates about their lives in the Marines. Ema was in and out between working and running errands. Before the call, my good friend, Deb Ohlwine, stopped by with her delicious pumpkin bars for my night of celebrating.

On Saturday morning, our decorating committee met for an exchange of ideas on the look of our new building. There are still many decisions to be made and tasks to be completed. Our hope is to have it completed over the next month or so.

After our meeting, Pastor Charlotte and I headed out on a local adventure.

Saturday was Charlotte’s birthday and we have created a tradition of celebrating together. With masks and hand sanitizer, we headed to the flea markets at the local businesses in Leaf River and Mt. Morris.

My aunt Bobbi Deen was set-up at one location with her baked goods. Charlotte and I found a few good deals along the way, including slushies and apple cider donuts at Berryview Farms. There were several people out enjoying the beautiful day.

In the evening, my celebration continued with my good friend, Brooke, from my classes at NIU. She and I met in Sterling for dinner before going to the movies. We have both missed the movie experience and were the only two people in the theater.

This afternoon, I went to visit my brother, Ben Bittinger and his wife, Jo. They had been busy visiting their son, Hayden, in Platteville. Garrett was also home for the weekend and headed back to school this afternoon.

In July, my friend, Teresa, fell off a stool and broke two bones in her foot.

She had to wear a cast for about a month before changing into a boot. It was her right foot and she wasn’t able to drive.

I volunteered to help her since my drive to Sterling went right past her home and work.

Then, my workplace asked that we work from home. Teresa still needed help, so I continued to drive over to Sterling from Polo and take her from home to work and back again in the evening.

This coming week, she is back to driving herself. The past few weeks have been a real challenge for her. It isn’t easy relying on others when you are used to being independent. This past couple of months has been a lesson in patience for both of us.

Teresa has had to accept that healing those bones in her foot takes time, lots and lots of time. My lesson in patience came in a much different form. I had been avoiding working from home. This time of transition has been preparing me to spend my days and nights at home.

This joint experience has meant different things for the two of us. God knows what we need, when we need it. There is a closeness that we only feel with someone who truly understands us. He will meet you wherever you are. He loves you that much.

I hope to see you next week in our church, at our new location and at our new time of 9:30 am. Don’t forget to stop by our garage sale on Saturday morning.

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com Ogle County residents had a chance at a quick and easy COVID19 test on Monday in Forreston and Mt. Morris.

Aunt Martha’s Health and Wellness provided mobile testing sites for two hours in each village that yielded 15 tests in Forreston and eight tests as of 3 p.m. in Mt. Morris.

“I was expecting to see a little bit more people coming in,” Aunt Martha’s Health Educator Oswaldo Lopez said. “We haven’t seen as many as we wanted here. We expected quite a few people. It’s been kind of slow. I think we need to do more outreach. I think a lot of people don’t know we’re here. Only a few people know, and those people were here.”

Lopez, who was administering the tests, said he came prepared with 250 tests for the day. When testing in Coal City, he said they did 70 tests at one site.

The testing was done in a drive-thru format. Testees are given a form to fill out and self-test. If they don’t want to test themselves, the test is administered to them. There was no appointment required like at a hospital.

“This is accessible and takes a few minutes,” Lopez said. “The longest is to fill out the form. If you have insurance, we collect that. It is free for people without insurance. We want people to have access. We try to bill the insurance, if they say no,

Ogle County cases climb to 661 as of Sept. 22

The Ogle County Health Department reported 11 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, Sept. 22 for a new total of 661.

Two new cases were reported Saturday, 11 on Sunday and nine on Monday. Ages and locations of the individuals that test positive are not being released to protect their privacy.

Recoveries of documented cases stand at 551, but the OCHD recently said due to switching systems, recoveries won’t be updated for two weeks.

The county reported its sixth death on Sept. 15, a female in her

70s.

The Illinois Department of Public Health site said Tuesday that there are 311 cases in the 61068 zip code that includes Rochelle, Creston and White Rock.

Stillman Valley’s zip code, 61084, has 29 cases in it according to the IDPH site. Byron’s zip code, 61010, has 93 cases. Davis Junction (61020) has 28 cases.

The zip codes that house Oregon (61061) and Mt. Morris (61054) have 54 and 41 cases, respectively.

Polo’s zip code, 61064, has 33 cases in it. Leaf River (61047) has 12 cases.

Forreston (61030), which was recently added to the IDPH’s reporting, has nine cases.

There were no symptoms required to be tested. 80 percent of cases are asymptomatic, Lopez said. Most of those that came to be tested wanted it just to make sure they don’t have it, he said.

“It’s for their conscience,” Lopez said. “They want to make sure they aren’t carriers. They have a good sense of morality. That’s wonderful.”

Lopez said Aunt Martha’s tests all over the state at churches, schools

and parking lots. The testing site at the Mt. Morris Sullivan’s was their first grocery store. Lopez said he enjoyed it because of the possibility of attracting shoppers that didn’t know about the testing beforehand.

About 80 percent of those that came out to be tested Monday were senior citizens, Lopez said. The other 10 percent were adults and the rest were minors.

Testees were asked why they wanted to be tested. If they believe they’ve been exposed, they were asked to bring people who have been around them in for testing.

The testing method was PCR format, not a rapid test. The PCR format is more accurate, Lopez said.

The rapid test method can have results back in 15 minutes, but has a larger margin of error, he said.

“The return rate is 3-5 days,” Lopez said. “It has been sooner, even. They find out through us. It’s faster than month’s past. We had to close down for two weeks for too many tests. Our labs were so slow.

Now it’s much faster.”

Aunt Martha’s started as a social services organization for youth in 1972. It evolved into medical care, foster homes, substance abuse help and more for underserved, rural communities.

Mobile testing will also be done in Polo on Monday, Sept. 28 from 11-1 p.m. at 212 S. Division Ave.

Meyer double murder case continued again

A Byron man accused of murdering his ex-wife and 3-year-old son did not appear in Ogle County court as scheduled on Monday due to another continuance being opted for in his case.

The continuance was agreed to for Nov. 2 at 1:30 p.m. by both parties to address possible pretrial motions, Ogle County State’s Attorney Eric Morrow said.

Duane Meyer was charged in October 2019 with four counts of first degree homicide, two counts of aggravated arson and one count of concealment of a homicidal death in connection with the deaths of Maggie and Amos Meyer who were killed in a fire in 2016

that was determined to be an arson.

Continuances were granted last month and in March to allow both parties time to review “voluminous” cell phone records. The case was delayed early in the summer due to COVID-19.

Meyer is currently being held in the Ogle County Jail on a $10 million bond.

Project Humane proposes a plan for feral cats Group asks to assume responsibility and form TNR program

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com Controlling the city of Polo’s feral cat population may soon be the responsibility of a private group of local citizens that took issue with the city’s recent ordinance regarding the felines.

Project Humane Polo made a presentation to the city council on Monday where it offered to establish a trap neuter release program, address nuisance cat situations, and work to reduce the city’s feral cat population all at its own expense.

The group currently has 96 volunteers and has raised $400 in funds.

“I know every year there’s been a cat issue in Polo,” Project Humane Polo Member Cheryl Galor said. “I think this is our solution. The best way to save 100, 200 or 300 cats is to start neutering one, another one and another one. We do need to address this problem and we have a good program and solution for all of the complaints that have been going on.”

Happy Tails President Mark Razo has been working with the group and attended the meeting Monday to address concerns and questions.

“TNR is a way to reduce your cat population in the town,” Razo said.

“TNR is a humane way to solve the problem. You will reduce the population. We are supporting that and helping them raise money for that.

The city doesn’t have to fund this at all. We could also go for grants with the city’s cooperation.”

Polo’s recent feral cat ordinance included fines for those caught feeding cats they don’t own as well as limiting the number of animals residents can own.

Alderman Troy Boothe asked the group if they could guarantee him that problem cats will be addressed, especially those that defecate on people’s property, which has been a main issue for the city.

“It sounds promising, but it doesn’t address defecation,” Boothe said. “I need problem cats gone, period. I have a responsibility for everybody. I’m 100 percent for it

if that will happen. I don’t want to hear there are resource constraints when there is a problem.”

Galor responded by saying the group would relocate those animals.

“Give us a chance,” Galor said.

“I know we have a program that’s going to work. These are solutions.

If the cat is really a nuisance, we will relocate it.”

Project Humane Polo estimates there are 500 feral cats in town, but is unsure of the accuracy of that number, which is based on a formula. Under their plan, volunteers would trap and transport the cats for treatment before releasing them back where they were found.

The treated cats would also be microchipped and have their ears notched to be tracked. Nuisance cats could be released outside of town.

The group plans on it being at least a three-year program.

City Attorney Tom Suits raised the issue of potential liability for the city by giving the responsibility to address the issue to Project Humane Polo.

“There’s absolutely potential liability,” Suits said. “If the nuisance call comes to the city and the city contacts this group to go handle it, is the city liable for something that may happen? We don’t know that.”

The city did not take any action on the issue after the presentation and said it will work to have it on its next agenda, possibly for approval.

Byron station response committee established

An announcement was made last Friday about the formation of the Byron Station Response Committee, which plans to develop a “collaborative, broad-based response” to Exelon’s announcement of its intent to close Byron Station in September 2021.

It is always exciting because I never know what I will find.

This time it was information from the family of George Read and some of the history of Anna Parmelee. It had all been saved by Dorothy Read Graebal with instructions to send it to Polo Historical Society, Dorothy’s husband was Rev. Richard Paul Graebel who had been the pastor of the Polo Presbyterian Church in 1936.

Her father was George E. Read and there was a notation that George had owned Aplington House in 1925 or 1926.

I knew that George Read had his law office in Aplington House but I did not know that he owned the home at one time. We know very little about early Aplington House after the Aplington’s left it. I will now find out more about George Read.

The first big “find” was an early picture of the Dr. William Burns House.

It was a Christmas card from Arthur and Emma Pearson who lived in the

doctor’s house after the doctor had left it. Ruel Pearson moved into the house in 1869.

There is no date on the card since it was not sent through the mail.

The card shows the Burns’ house with a building hooked on to the back of it. The early Sanborn Maps showed that something had been there but we did not know what it was or when it was taken off the building.

We always thought that Dr. Burns had a place for his horses and probably a buggy in those early days.

The card had been sent to Anna Parmelee because the verse on the card had Anna’s name in it. Also on the back of the card was a notation about how the Pearson family would have holiday meals with the Read family “across the street.”

This card had been saved by Dorothy Read Graebel.

Dorothy was the one who had written the extra comments on the back of the card. She also wrote how Miss Parmelee had taught her father, George E. Read and her father’s sister, Aunt Julia Read Lawrence in those early school days in Polo.

Dorothy kept quite a bit of information on the life of Anna Parmelee and I will tell you about Anna’s life later. Anna lived to be 97 and she lived just down the street from me as I grew up.

I also have been getting information on the train wreck that Jerry Brantner wanted. Jerry was the one who brought me memorabilia of his grandfather, Ralph Keckler and not Jim. I will tell you about the train wreck later. All these are interesting stories from the past.

Pine Creek Township was first settled in 1846 Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon has researched the people, places and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is one of a series of the articles he has written.

BY OTTO DICK Pine Creek Township is the typical sized township of 36 square miles located on the western border of Oregon Township.

This township was first settled in 1846 by a man named Smith. His wife died shortly after he settled in Pine Rock Township giving birth to the first child born in the township.

At that time about two-thirds of the township was timber and the remainder prairie.

Before Smith arrived, Oregon’s founder John Phelps, built the first sawmill in Ogle County powered by the waters of Pine Creek. This sawmill furnished lumber from 1836 to 1850.

Pine Creek is fed by numerous springs and runoff from the timbers and farms. It flows through the White Pines State Park southward into the Rock River at Grand Detour.

At one time the only village in Pine Creek Township was Stratford. Stratford, a train town, came into existence when the Burlington & Quincy was completed between Oregon and Polo in 1893.

The population of Stratford grew to 20 inhabitants. It had an elevator, grocery store, post office and a railroad depot. A train loaded with potatoes derailed at the CB&Q station at Stratford in October 1934.

Seven cars were derailed and crashed through the depot while a group of laborers were in the station staying out of the rain. Many people in that area came to help clean up the free potatoes.

Today Stratford is listed as an unincorporated community and is located on Lowell Park Road, just north of Pines Road.

About 80 years after Phelps built the sawmill in Pine Creek Township another Oregon resident was instrumental in a 24 year struggle to purchase the 300 acres of white pines for a state park.

As President of the Oregon’s Woman’s Council Rebecca Kaufman presented the Illinois General Assembly a proposal requesting purchase of 300 acres for $30,000. The Illinois General Assembly was in favor and passed a resolution asking the United States Department of Agriculture to make an examination of the forests in the state including the pines.

Mr. R. S. Kellogg of the U. S. Bureau of Forestry surveyed the area and recommended the pines should be made into a state park.

Finally on Sept. 16, 1927 Governor Small did not think “Ogle County was trying to have the state buy a gooseberry patch,” and he gave his assent to purchase 282.96 acres at $63,949.

Jane Shoemaker wrote in her Pine Creek Recollections the following: “One of the joys of childhood is to wade barefoot in a crisp, cool bubbling creek. Water refreshing to the toes. Turtles and trout swimming around minding fish business.

hat comment was made by the widow of Larry Wilson, who passed away last week at the age of 82. He was a Hall-of-Fame football player for the St. Louis Cardinal football team from 1960-72.

So what’s the big deal, you ask. Former star athletes die all the time.

Well, for a 12-year kid like myself in 1970, Larry Wilson made an impact upon me like no other sports athlete.

The scenario was this: At the time, the St. Louis football Cardinals, who eventually became the Arizona Cardinals, had their pre-season camp at Lake Forest. The Bears would have been the preferred team to watch practice, but they had their camp in far southwest Indiana.

Thus, a couple adults and three of us kids piled into a car and headed to Lake Forest to see the pros up close and personal. It was also an opportunity to get autographs.

The big name player for the Cardinals was a physically gifted halfback named Donny Ander-

son. That’s whom I sought out first in my quest for memorabilia to take back home. Upon asking, the response was “Get lost kid.”

Talk about having hero worship crushed. That’s what Donny Anderson did to me and I decided it would be best to give up on autograph seeking; that is until a beat-up looking player with a No. 8 jersey came by. It was Larry Wilson.

Compared to the pompous, pretty boy No. 44 Anderson, Wilson had a different look to him, one of genuine compassion. Still stinging from the Anderson rejection, I set aside my pride just enough to ask Larry Wilson for an autograph.

Not only did he oblige, but also he spoke to me in an interpersonal way. This from a guy who had to be exhausted from a grueling workout and someone who had been asked innumerable times for an autograph.

My faith in the human race was restored by the kind manner in which he treated me. Being an impressionable 12-year old, the interactions with him and Donny Anderson had always stayed with me.

Larry Wilson had nowhere near the physical talent as Donny Anderson, but as a human being, stood head and shoulders above him. To this day, it is rare to find a professional athlete with similar ideals.

He was mentally tough enough to play one game with casts on both hands because of broken fingers.

One final quote from Michael Bidwell, owner of the Cardinals: “Larry was someone who truly lived his faith and demonstrated it daily in the kindness he showed every single person he met.”

What a beautiful contrast to the opinionated athlete of today who has agendas they would rather foist upon you. Give me a Larry Wilson any day over them.

On another note, rallies were held in Chicago and Springfield on Saturday in hopes of getting the governor to change his mind and allow all normal fall sports. Now that Michigan reversed course, we are the only state in the Midwest with restrictions.

That makes no sense, but this is coming from a man who has already devastated the livelihood of businesses all over the state. Let the parents and their children decide if it safe to play sports, not a dictator.

By placing all these safeguards and limitations on our young people, it’s entirely possible that there is more harm being done to their over-

I was reading my column from two weeks ago on school discipline and it came across disparaging to the field of psychology and its practitioners. To be fair, school psychologists are a vital part of mental health and many a student has emotional problems that need to be addressed by a professional.

More arrests at bar despite new noise ordinance Owner was arrested multiple times during the weekend

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com Despite Ogle County’s efforts to create a new noise ordinance in response to complaints about a bar just north of Oregon, arrests continued over the weekend.

Sledgehammer’s owner, Jason Stombaugh, was arrested multiple times over the weekend for disorderly conduct stemming from noise complaints from area residents who chose to press charges.

The county’s new noise ordinance, which has yet to be signed, only takes effect after 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and after 8 p.m. on Sunday. Stombaugh has been arrested seven times. Twelve total arrests have been made of bar employees due to noise complaints. Stombaugh says none of them have come after 9 p.m.

Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle says the arrests will continue regardless of time if there are com-

plaints and residents are willing to press charges. The amount of time spent responding to calls at the bar has started to mount, he said.

“We’ve spent a good deal of time and energy on this,” VanVickle said.

“I feel for the residents. There’s been over 150 calls. We’ve spent more time at Sledgehammer’s than in villages we have to patrol. It leaves the rest of the county exposed. We want everybody’s rights protected.”

Stombaugh said he was arrested by four deputies at once during one of the incidents over the weekend and called it “aggressive.”

“They left with the band still playing,” Stombaugh said. “They don’t tell them to stop. It seems like more of a personal attack on us.”

Court dates stemming from the arrests will begin Wednesday, Sept.

23 for Stombaugh and bar managers Melissa Wall and Justin Coltrain.

“The impact will be decided in court,” Wall said. “The immediate impact is loss of revenue and defamation of our character. It’s a constant battle to keep people in.”

Stombaugh and Wall say they have lost $60,000 in business due to the arrests and have spent an “astronomical” amount of time dealing with lawyers and communicating with the county regarding the issue.

Stombaugh and Wall believe the noise ordinance falls short of resolving the issue.

“Why did the county board waste everyone’s time? They did nothing about it,” Wall said.

Sledgehammer’s plans to continue to have outdoor bands, weather permitting.

They say the bands end at 5 p.m. on Sundays and at 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

Mother Nature smiled on the Back Roads Market Saturday paving the way for hundreds of visitors to pick apples and berries, search for antiques, or just shop under sunny skies while social distancing.

Four businesses on the back roads near Mt. Morris—BerryView Orchard, Vintage Chicks and Feed, Funky Junk and Curb Finds, and Hough’s Maple Lane Farm— welcomed a steady stream of visitors during the day-long event.

“We were glad to get out today,” said a masked Dana Winterton of Rockford as she picked aronia berries at BerryView Orchard. “I think everybody had the same idea.”

The store at the orchard had only two bags of pre-picked apples by mid-afternoon with a long line of customers patiently waiting for apple cider donuts as they were made in the food truck just outside the store.

In the orchard, the Gregg family from Hampshire was busy picking apples. Sixyear-old Raelynn chomped on one of the Cortland apples she had just picked.

“It’s very sweet,” she said. “I never had a Cortland before.”

The family’s pup, Teddy, was ambitiously eyeing the apple as he sat next to Raelynn. “No, no,” said Raelynn.

At Vintage Chicks and Feeds, on Illinois 72 east Leaf River, around 20 vendors offered local honey, soaps, antiques, vintage wares, and collectibles while at Funky Junk and Curb Finds, 6410 West Grove Road, Mt. Morris, refurbished furniture, vintage Christmas items, furniture, and just plain fun stuff greeted shoppers.

“You should have been here earlier,” said Doreen White of Mt. Morris. “The whole yard was filled with stuff.”

Lynette Hough of Hough’s Maple Lane Farms, 3788 North Mt. Morris Road, Mt. Morris, was busy replenishing maple delicacies throughout the day.

“It’s been very busy,” she said.

“This is a large undertaking, but we have to engage the cause to save Byron Station, our school district, other taxing bodies, and our entire community as we know it today,” Barton said in an email.

Oregon’s Dietrich finishes fifth at Wessels Invite

BY BRIAN WEIDMAN bweidman@saukvalley.com Jarrett Dietrich needed a little more cooperation from his putter, but he still came away happy with his round at the Salley Wessels Invitational on Sept. 19.

The Oregon golfer carded a 16-over-par 88 to place fifth in the event held at Sunset Golf Course in Mt. Morris.

Dietrich had plenty of birdie chances, but was unable to convert any.

“The break was a little more than I expected on some of them,” Dietrich said. “Others, I just had to put more power into it and left them short. I do feel good about my round.

This course is really hard to play.

The ground is hard sometimes. The rough is long. I feel good about this.”

The Hawks had a 417 total to place fifth in a nine-team field. Rounding out the Oregon lineup were Isaac Kaltenbrun (106), Jackson Werren (108), Isaac Reber (115), Miley Smith (120) and Brady Davis (130).

Dixon was seventh as a team with a 438. Competing for the Dukes were Steve Kitzman (104), Grant Jacobs

(110), Mason Wiegle (111), Sage Magnafici (113) and Trey Scheidegger (129).

Forreston was eighth with a 453.

The Cardinals’ lineup consisted of Joel Ludwig (102), Joe Snyder (107), Logan Dyson (120), Kaeden Ganz (124), Hayden Stralow (128) and Peyton Crase (160).

Polo had three players, Clay Davis (110), Cody Buskohl (115) and Nathaniel Yingling (133).

“It was a tough day on the course,” Stillman Valley coach Ryan Dessing said. “You didn’t see a whole lot of kids saying they were playing great today. Our kids stuck in there, which a lot of times is a tough thing to do when you feel like you’re not playing good. It’s easy to give up on the round. They all kept grinding.

The medalist was Stillman Valley’s Alex Lovgren, who carded a 12-over-par 84. Byron’s Mason Brandt was second with an 86, while Stillman’s Tim Marcum and Byron’s Eric Detig had 87. Dietrich, with 88,

Lovgren played football through his junior high years, then made the switch to golf as a freshman at Stillman Valley.

“I guess the flame just burnt out,” Lovgren said of giving up football, “and I started playing golf. I wasn’t too good my first time out. I shot a 58, which I wasn’t too mad about since it was my first time.

Then I spent 6 hours every day at the golf course that summer, got better my sophomore year, and since then, I’ve kept practicing and gotten better and better.”

Lovgren plans to keep his nose to the grindstone the rest of this season, then hit it hard again next spring and summer to see how good he can get.

“I’ve always wanted to get a scholarship in something,” Lovgren said. “I’m kind of good at this, so let’s see if I can get one in golf.”

Sept. 14 Michael D. Fritz, 24, of Machesney Park, was issued a citation at 12:40 a.m. for speeding, 46 mph in a 30 mph zone.

Sept. 16 Damian Jacobson, 20, of Oregon, was arrested at 4:34 p.m. on an outstand-

OGLE COUNTY SHERIFF Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle reports the following activity Sept. 16 Charlotte Wade, 34, of Polo was arrested at 12:15 a.m. for driving while under the influence of alcohol after deputies initiated a traffic stop near the intersection of Henry Road and Fox Lane Road. Wade was transported to the Ogle County Jail where she was held in lieu of bond.

The following people were arrested for Ogle County Outstanding Warrants: Jessica Erdman, 42, of Rochelle was arrested on an Ogle County outstanding warrant for failure to appear. Erdman’s bond was set at $4,635 pending a court appearance.

Vidal R. Mancilla, 28, of Rochelle was arrested on an Ogle County outstanding warrant for failure to appear. Mancilla’s bond was set at $11,448 pending a court appearance.

Darrell D. Reed, 32, of Byron was arrested on an Ogle County outstanding warrant for domestic battery. Reed’s bond was set at $25,000/ 10% pending a court appearance.

James Wilkow, age and residence not provided, was arrested on an Ogle

County outstanding warrant for aggravated battery. Wilkow’s bond was set at $20,000/10% pending a court appearance.

Sept. 17 Lauriel L. Tahara, 48, of Hanover Park was arrested at 1:47 a.m. on two counts of aggravated battery to a peace officer, resisting arrest and driving while under the influence of alcohol following a traffic stop at East Illinois 64 at Skare Road.

Tahara was also cited for speeding, operating an uninsured motor vehicle and open container of alcohol. Tahara was transported to the Ogle County Jail where she was released to the corrections staff and held with no bond.

Adam Murray, age not provided, of Mt. Morris was arrested at 8:15 p.m. for driving while under the influence of alcohol after deputies responded to a single vehicle rollover accident at the intersection of Illinois 26 and Illinois 64. Murray was transported to the hospital and later released on an I-Bond. Murray was also cited for operating an uninsured motor vehicle, failure to reduce speed and failure to obey a stop sign. Murray was scheduled to appear in court at a later date.

Sept. 19 Scott Pumfrey, 58, of Chana was arrested at 12:13 a.m. for driving while under the influence after deputies and the Oregon Fire Department were dispatched to a one-vehicle crash in the 4,800 block of South Prairie Road.

Deputies said Pumfrey was traveling south on Prairie Road when he lost control of the pick up truck he was driving. The truck then skidded off of the roadway and struck a tree before overturning.

Pumfrey was extricated from the truck by firefighters and transported by ambulance to KSB in Dixon for what appeared to be minor injuries. Pumfrey will appear in Ogle County court at a later date.

At 10:16 a.m. deputies along with the Polo Fire Department, Polo Ambulance, and the Polo Police Department, responded to a one-vehicle accident with injuries on Illinois 52 at Mt. Vernon Road.

A Hyundai Elantra was eastbound on Illinois 52 when the vehicle drove off onto the right side shoulder. The vehicle then crossed over both lanes to the north side shoulder before coming back onto the roadway.

The vehicle then left the north side of

the road striking an embankment and coming to a stop in the north ditch.

The driver, Katelynn M. Smith, 26, of Dixon, had a minor facial injury but refused any further medical treatment.

Three passengers, all minors, were uninjured.

Dani Brzozowski (D) – Brzozowski has served as the chairwoman for the La Salle County Democrats since 2018.

The La Salle Democrat is a former small-business owner and community activist.

PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES

Cheri Bustos (D) – Bustos, an East Moline Democrat, was elected in 2013 and is running for a fifth term in office. She’s chairwoman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, comes from an agriculture background, and formerly worked in health care and journalism.

Esther Joy King (R) – King, an East Moline Republican, is a real estate lawyer and small-business owner. Her parents were Christian missionaries, she previously served as an aid worker in Kabul, Afghanistan, and she’s in the U.S. Army Reserve as a Judge Advocate General’s Corps officer.

U.S. SENATOR

Dick Durbin (D) – The incumbent Democrat, Durbin has held his current seat since 1996 and serves in a leadership position. He’s been in the party’s No. 2 spot since 2005.

Mark Curran (R) – A Republican from Lake County, Curran served as the county’s sheriff from 2006 to 2018, when he was unseated by Democrat John Idleburg. Curran, who billed himself as a reformer, ran as a Democrat in the 2006 sheriff’s race but switched parties in 2008.

CONGRESS 3rd DISTRICT

Marie Newman (D) – Newman, a Democrat, unseated incumbent Rep. Dan Lipinski in the primary race. She’s a resident of La Grange and has worked as a marketing consultant.

Gov. Pat Quinn appointed her to a task force to formulate best practices to combat bullying in schools.

Mike Fricilone (R) – Fricilone, a Republican, has served on the Will County Board since 2012 and is the minority leader on the board.

He’s been a resident of Will County for more than 30 years and is the executive director of Midwest Office Interiors in Woodridge.

Sean Casten (D) – The Democratic incumbent, Casten won his congressional seat as part of the blue wave that swept Democrats into office across the suburbs in 2018. A businessman with a background in clean energy, Casten defeated six-term incumbent Republican Peter Roskam that year.

Jeanne Ives (R) – Ives, a Republican from Wheaton, served three terms in the Illinois House of Representatives before running against then-incumbent Gov. Bruce Rauner, nearly defeating him in the Republican primary. While in the statehouse, Ives represented the state’s 42nd district for six years.

Laib is a native of Joliet who served eight years in the Army and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from the University of St. Francis, a master’s degree from Biola University and a Master of Theology from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School.

JOE BIDEN (D)

Biden, a Democrat, served as vice president under President Barack Obama. Prior to that, he was the U.S. senator for Delaware from 1973 to 2009.

Jim Oberweis (R) – A Republican from Sugar Grove, Oberweis has a background as businessman and has served as state senator for the 25th district since January 2013. He previously ran for this seat in 2008 and has made other bids for statewide and federal office.

Adam Kinzinger (R) – Kinzinger, who sits on the committee of foreign affairs, is seeking his fifth term in the 16th District – sixth Congressional term overall. The Channahon Republican is an Air Force veteran and still serves in the Air National Guard.

25th DISTRICT

Rep. Karina Villa (D-West Chicago) – Villa is finishing her first term in the Illinois House. A first-generation American, she worked as a school social worker and as a school board vice president before joining the General Assembly.

Jeanette Ward (R-West Chicago) – Ward served four years as an at-large member of Elgin Area School District U46. With two four-year degrees and a Master of Business Administration, she is a product manager for an industrial chemical company.

37th DISTRICT

Win Stoller (R-Germantown Hills) – Stoller is making his first bid for elected office. He has a background in accounting and is CEO of an office furniture dealership.

Marcus Throneburg (I-Kewanee) – Throneburg is a former pastor and past Bureau County Board member.

Although he filed to run as an independent, he now is a write-in candidate, having been removed from the ballot because he voted in an established party primary in March.

Brian Sager (D-Woodstock) – Sager has been part of city government since 1989 and is completing his fourth term as mayor.
