The summer days slip away faster and faster. Even without the usual joys of picnics and festivals, the days and nights have blended and time has not slowed.

For every minute, every hour, we are grateful for His presence. God is good.

This morning for outdoor church, we were greeted by Sheryl Hopkins. Dr. Vincent Marandino gave the inspirational message while Pastor Charlotte Hoppe enjoys her vacation. I was so glad to visit with others even at a distance.

On Monday night, I called Stephanie and João in Houston, Texas. They are both doing well in their new city. João is now working from home. His new job has had a few unexpected challenges but he is getting acclimated.

The couple is meeting new friends in the building. Stephanie has been sewing again and made a beautiful new dress.

We had planned to get together next month, but have decided it just isn’t a

good time right now.

On Wednesday night, I spoke with Clint. I had been missing his laughter.

He gave me the usual rundown of his days in the shop and weekends with friends. Clint was also sad to say he wouldn’t be coming home for a while, but I was welcome to come visit him in California.

This evening, I went to visit my brother, Ben Bittinger, and his wife, Jo. Their sons, Hayden and Garrett, were out for the evening, at work and with friends.

They will be leaving for school and soon the whole family will be on to their next chapter.

On my way home, my son, Matt, called me. He works nights in his shop.

Between the time difference in Hawaii and his schedule, we haven’t been able to connect. I always enjoy hearing about their lives and family of animals. One of the many things they share is a deep love of animals.

The couple has been rescuing animals, including a blind cat. They recently found out their dog will need surgery.

Together, they are doing all they can to take care of their animal family. Matt also said he wouldn’t be coming home as planned.

So many of our plans have changed due to the unforeseen circumstances of the pandemic.

As a community, we are all disappointed in missing the many events we

On my drive home Sunday afternoon, I watched as the warm, summer winds gently moved the plants in the bean fields. It reminded of the ocean waves off the coast of California. Then, I remembered who is in charge.

Our Heavenly Father created this beautiful world. He brings the winds and He raises the plants that bend at His will. He comforts us in our times of loss and sorrow. He celebrates with us on our daily victories. He loves us even when we are unlovable.

It is easy to think and feel like we are completely alone, especially in these times. In building a relationship with Jesus, we understand that He is with us, through every trial. Our faith tells us that we are not alone. We have a friend to lean on whenever we need him.

Living by faith is not an easy solution.

It takes practice to learn how to turn to God. Taking time to read the Bible, listening to the stories of other believers, and spending time in prayer are just a few ways to build a faithful relationship with Jesus.

I hope you’ll join us next week, outdoors, as the weather permits. Pastor Charlotte will be back in person, and, if the technology works, online, too. Come and join our faithful family.

Homes destroyed, 5 people injured after 100 mph wind hits

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com Monday’s storm hit so fast that Mike Boomgarden didn’t even have time to grab his raincoat.

The Forreston Police Chief and approximately 30 other first responders jumped into action for a severe wind event that hit the area, doing most of its damage in Forreston, devastating a neighborhood of mobile homes and sending five residents to the hospital.

There were no fatalities. The village sustained tree and wire damage to 48 blocks and 13 blocks had structural damage to buildings.

“It’s basically total devastation,” Forreston Fire Department Chief Mark Daws said. “It’s totally gone.

• STORM DAMAGE Continued from Page 3 damage through there. As far as the trailer park, they’re all basically gone. I’ve never seen anything like this. I’ve been on the fire district for 39 years. This is the worst I’ve seen.”

Village President Mark Metzger made a disaster declaration Monday afternoon and said shelter center had been established at the Leaf River Valley complex for affected residents. The village estimates 50-100 residents have been displaced or “affected the most.”

The storm, which had winds over 100 miles per hour, struck the county around 2:15 p.m. Local law enforcement shut down all roads to Forreston afterward to give first responders space.

ComEd and Nicor were still working Monday evening to restore

power and gas to the community.

Over 8,000 county residents were without power at one time Monday.

“We had the most significant damage here in Forreston,” Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle said. “But we did sustain damage all the way from Forreston to rural Rochelle. It went the 42 miles across the county and the wind did a significant amount of damage to trees and power lines everywhere else.”

The Sheriff’s Office deployed extra deputies to patrol and help out in Forreston. Deputies were still responding to blocked roads and downed power lines three hours after the storm.

Immediately following the storm, a search was done of the south mobile home park in Forreston to account for residents.

“Pretty much everyone was out,” Daws said. “There were a few unaccounted for but they later came. We

are going to return and do a secondary search again. Right now we think we have everyone accounted for but we’ll be doing another one.”

Daws said the severe storm warning came through his department’s paging system and there was awareness ahead of time.

Trisheena Sturtz had come home to check on her cats and the storm hit five minutes later. Her friend Kurtis Jacobs directed her to get into the bathroom and he saw a tree come down by their trailer.

“Then after that happened he said we needed to help people,” Sturtz said. “My ex lives down the road and we had to dig them out of the trailer.

They were OK. We’ve found two of our three cats.”

Amy Houston manages the BP gas station on Illinois 26 in Forreston near the mobile home park. The winds tore the heating and cooling unit off the roof of the building. That

left a hole in the roof. There was a gas leak as well.

Houston’s car was also damaged when the wind blew a road closed sign, and the 300-pound man that was holding it, into her car.

“It got dark and really windy and the trees were flying this way and things hit my vehicle,” Houston said. “It was really fast. But the wind lasted for a while. Our home wasn’t affected. Just garbage cans blown over.“ The Forreston Township building also sustained heavy damage and several empty semi-trailers were pushed into a corner lot with one being turned onto its side.

The east wall of a cement block building collapsed and fell on a nearby Moring Disposal semi-tractor.

Chain saws could be heard all through town late afternoon as residents started removing fallen trees and branches.

I came upon an old envelope that stated, “Casualty List 15th Illinois by Hometown.”

As I pulled all the lists out of the envelope, I could see they were from 10 towns in Northern Illinois listing those killed, wounded and telling of their injuries.

I called my sister Ruby Jean to see what on earth I had in my hands.

She said, “Well, you have an Adjunct General’s Report from a battle. What battle is it?”

I looked back at the envelope and

told her it said, “The Battle of Pittsburg Landing, Tenn. April 6 & 7, 1862.” That was the Battle of Shiloh she responded.

I looked at Polo’s list and the names killed were, Andrew Typer, Daniel Roby, and Charles Fox. I quickly looked at the Civil War display on the wall before me and found only Andrew Typer listed.

I knew I had work to do and I called Pat McPherson of the American Legion.

As we put our records in order we listed not only those who had been killed, but those who died from their

injuries, those having died from diseases, and in prisons.

The more I worked with the 15th Regiment and those who went from Polo during the Civil War, the more interested I became. They were so afraid their story would never be fully told. I was hooked and the book on the 15th Regiment began to unfold as Kathy Pasch and I worked together on it.

Now we have the pictures of Daniel Roby to add to our information as we reorder more books. What a find tucked away in Sarah Coffman Roby’s album almost tossed away.

Thank you to all my loving family and friends for the beautiful cards and good wishes I received in honor of my 90th Birthday.

The cards kept coming long after my birthday, which I really enjoyed!

Recently Loren Gatz dropped off a packet of old pictures that had been saved by Neva in the Gatz family.

Joyce said they came very close to ending up in the trash pile but instead they gave me a call. Of course I wanted them.

They were in an old Tri-County Press mailing envelope labeled “Sarah Coffman Roby Album” with the word “Save” written across the top. After we visited with Loren I settled myself on the davenport and opened the package.

I love going through old pictures.

The pictures of the children and how they are dressed interest me and the wedding pictures. The wedding clothing always is so different from what we select today. I enjoy seeing families together.

The first thing I noticed was every picture was labeled with a name.

That is not usually the way it goes.

I have even managed to put families together with very few names. In this case I did not have to guess at all.

It did not take me long to come across a Civil War picture of Daniel Roby with all the information written on the back.

It was stated clearly, “Killed in the Battle of Pittsburg Tenn. April 6, 1862. War record Ogle Co. Ill. Son of Sally Coffman Roby.”

Another picture of him that was perhaps a graduation picture also had the words, “Dan Roby, Son of James and Sarah Coffman Roby, Killed in Civil War Battle of Pittsburg Tenn. Apr. 6 – 1862. War record Ogle Co. Ill.” I still remember the day many years ago when I pulled out the envelope from the Civil War file. I was at Aplington House and it was time to go through this bulging Civil War file that needed attention. I was not a

Freshman year at OHS looked different in 1949 Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon has researched the people, places and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is one of a series of the articles he has written.

BY OTTO DICK Thinking back things sure changed during our lifetime.

My Freshman year (1949), I attended Oregon Community High School located at 10th and Madison Streets.

This school was built in 1936 at a cost of $158,182. This is the approximate cost of building a home today.

In 1935 the Works Progress Administration (WPA) was created

by Franklin D. Roosevelt.

This agency was a New Deal relief program to employ millions of jobless Americans to carry out projects like constructing bridges and buildings. The high school buildings at Oregon and Dixon were part of this program.

In 1968, Oregon High School District #218, Oregon Elementary District #88 and the Chana School District combined into the Oregon Community High School District #218.

In 1953, my Senior year, Mr. Kiest was our principal and Betty Brunner our secretary. The teaching staff consisted of 16 teachers and two custodians.

Our graduating class consisted of 51 students (25 boys and 26 girls).

This was of course before computers, guidance instructors, driver education, cell phones etc.

My parents purchased our clothes for the school year from the Montgomery Ward’s Catalog. We purchased our school books from Fischer’s Book Store. We brought our lunch to school in paper sacks. There was no lunch room or cafeteria.

Sports were limited compared to today. Of course there were no girl’s athletics and no athletic director.

Sports consisted of football, basketball, track and field and golf.

Our football schedule consisted of 6 games against South Beloit, Mt. Carroll, Mt. Morris, Polo, Lanark and Earlville.

Our track and field course was a dirt track around the football field.

Seating for football games was a wood bleacher built into a hill located on the east side of the field.

No room was dedicated as a library. Mrs. Donaldson taught Latin and English and sponsored the Library Club.

Library books were stored on the west wall of the study hall. We

checked outs books from the library in an alcove located at the front of the library manned by a student.

I had study hall the last period of the day with Mrs. Kloster as our monitor. No student wanted to cross Mrs. Kloster. She was a tremendous and respected teacher.

Miss Holmes was our chorus and orchestra instructor. Most students participated in one of the choruses

(Boys, Girls and mixed choruses).

The Girls’ choruses consisted of 88 members. The storage room for our band instruments was a small room located beside the stage area in the gymnasium.

The stage was our band practice area, in other words no band room.

I mentioned above what Oregon High School was like when I attended from 1948 to 53. At that time we had no idea how Oregon High School and education would develop.

We looked forward to attending High School in this new building.

We were excited about a gymnasium with a stage area, a football field and track facility. Industrial Arts and Agriculture programs were popular with those of us not interested in the academic curriculum.

My interests during High School were all three sports, Industrial Arts and Typing. My interests centered on work before and after school.

I delivered the Rockford Morning Star before school and worked evenings and weekends at Fischer’s book store and ushered at the theatre.

he sporting world continues to get crazier and crazier.

Greatly influenced by Northern Illinois University athletic director Sean Frazier, the Mid American Conference has decided to cancel all fall sports.

With the announcement last week, the MAC becomes the biggest conference to date that is postponing football to spring, or possibly cancelling the entire year. Who knows anymore?

What is significant is that a precedent has been set and larger and more prestigious leagues, such as the Big 10, may follow suit.

If that is the case, NIU will be known nationwide for pioneering such change.

Congratulations to Sean Considine of Byron for being named the greatest player to come out of the Rockford area in the past 75 years by the Register Star newspaper.

Sports Editor Matt Trowbridge did the rankings based upon how players did in high school, college and the pros.

Of his top 25, Adam Dach of Byron was 18th and Troy Drake, another Tiger, was No. 10. Bucky Babcok was 23rd for Stillman Valley and Winnebago had two top 25s in Larry Clark and the Boeke twins. The other BNC pick was James Robinson of Lutheran at 15th.

Cross country, golf, tennis and swimming/diving can begin practicing this week, with the first competitions on Aug. 24.

There are extremely detailed guidelines these sports must follow, per the IHSA. The biggest issue is limiting the competitions to 50.

Considering Oregon has over 1,000 runners show up for its first cross-country meet of the year, that is going to drastically impact things.

The beauty of a cross-country meet, is that regardless of ability level, everyone gets to run.

Anyone that didn’t run in the main varsity meet, would have the chance in the open meet.

Another detail to consider is the loss of economic revenue businesses in town had derived from all the big sporting events Oregon hosted.

There is not another school the size of Oregon the state that hosts as many functions

Speaking of pioneers, Polo was the school that gave credence to 8-man football. Everyone is excited that Aquin, AFC, Amboy, Milledgeville and Orangeville will be joining Polo and River Ridge as 8-man teams for the 2021 season.

Here’s a suggestion to the NUIC. Since the upcoming football schedule has so many uncertainties, what would be wrong with letting all of the above-mentioned schools start 8-man this spring instead of waiting until next fall.

The way it looks, teams may only play 6-7 regular season games anyway, with hopes of some kind of area-wide post season.

JoLynn Ward has been an instructional aide with the Oregon School district for a long time.

She was in Mt. Morris at the elementary school until the fire, and went with her students to Oregon. In the time I have known her, she has been an instructional aide for the English Language Learners.

FUNDRAISING EVENT

More land added to Howard Colman Hall Creek Preserve The Byron Forest Preserve District recently added an additional 40 wooded acres to their Howard Colman Hall Creek Preserve located at 12749 Weldon Road, Rockford in the very northeast corner of the District’s boundaries.

The 40 acres of oak-hickory forest was purchased from Rob Funderburg Jr. of Funderburg Farms, Inc. on July 14.

The cost was $4,400 per acre, over $2,000 per acre below the land’s assessed value. The money for this new addition to the preserve came from the District’s Capital Land Fund.

The new property will be called the R. Robert Funderburg Forest Preserve in honor of the former longtime president of Funderburg Farms, Inc. The site is located in northern Ogle

Bertolet Memorial Library is offering private Family Story Time once a week for a 20-30 minute time slot for children 3 and older.

The Youth Director, Jana Schlukebir, will lead the session and will include a story and an art project.

There will be two projects to choose from, one project per family, a craft project or a painting project.

Crafts are perfect for kids 3 and older; painting projects are best for kids 6 and older. A family member 16 years or older should be available to assist kids under the age of six with their project.

Masks will be required for everyone who is medically able to wear one, a temperature check will be done upon arrival. The sessions will be outside when possible or in the back room when the weather requires it. Kids should dress in clothes that are appropriate for the weather and that can get messy.

Uptick equals 40% expansion at greenhouse Lettuce sales are up for BrightFarms during pandemic

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com BrightFarms greenhouse in Rochelle is finishing up its 40 percent expansion this month.

And it was planned before the company experienced a growth in sales due to COVID-19 and consumers buying more lettuce to eat while staying home.

“Our business is up a bit because of the pandemic,” BrightFarms CEO Steve Platt said. “Overall, if you look at the data across the country, I think produce is up about 10 percent in most grocery stores. Our business is growing in the last month 40-45 percent.”

Platt believes a decentralized supply chain for food makes sense when there are problems all over the country. BrightFarms believes consumers take comfort knowing their food comes from within a day’s drive, as all of its lettuce does.

The Rochelle greenhouse opened in 2016 to serve midwest markets like Chicago and Milwaukee. Its first harvest since expansion should be coming in the next week or two.

Rochelle was chosen due to its proximity to those midwest markets and the ease of traffic and ordinances that isn’t seen in larger cities.

“We’ve found it great to put them within an hour of a major city and then we also get to invest in a local rural community that’s more in need of jobs and can be a place where we can be a big part of the community,” Platt said.

Over 95 percent of lettuce purchased in the U.S. comes from California. That crop is grown outside and is trucked across the country.

BrightFarms’ lettuce is grown in strategically-placed indoor locations across the U.S. in ponds with hydroponics. Platt touted his company’s growing process compared to outdoor growth that utilizes pesticides and is more susceptible to e-coli cases, which struck Ogle County last month.

“Our mission is all about the health of the planet for sustainability, but also the health of people,” Platt said. The greens we grow have no pesticides and they’re fresh within 24 hours and they taste better so you eat more.”

competitors by using less water in its growing process and less emissions in its transportation.

The Rochelle location does ship as far as Kansas City and Iowa. It’s limit on travel is one day, down and back.

By the time the expansion is complete, the Rochelle greenhouse will have around 40 employees. It is currently hiring for harvesting and packing positions.

Food processing plants have had to take precaution during the COVID19 pandemic to keep their workers safe. BrightFarms has implemented wellness checks and has been paying workers if they have to stay home due to not feeling well or possible exposure.

The greenhouse hasn’t had any COVID-19 positives. It has had

employees stay home, get tested and cleared before returning.

“We want to take care of people,” Platt said. “We have social distancing. That changed our operation a bit. Everyone is wearing a mask and we have an enhanced cleaning protocol. We’re not allowing any visitors in.”

Platt believes the increased sales due to COVID-19 are permanent and that people will continue to shop locally, a recent trend in the food industry.

“People are doing it for many reasons,” Platt said. “They’re more concerned about their own community.

Also because of the transparency we provide knowing where it came from. There’s been a big push back against big food companies over time

and I think the local food movement grows from that.”

BrightFarms currently has six greenhouse operations, recently breaking ground in North Carolina and opening a new one in central Pennsylvania.

While the Rochelle expansion is still in progress, another may not be far off. Platt believes there’s still more demand to be found in Chicago and the midwest. BrightFarms wants to continue expanding the Rochelle facility in the future.

“Sure, another [expansion] could be not too far down the road,” Platt said. “We’re continuing to grow.

Rochelle supplying Chicago was really our second major greenhouse we ever built and it’s been a great home for us since.”

Darrell James Bauer and Cleo Velma Scharr were united in marriage on Aug. 6, 1955 in Lima Wisconsin, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church.

Shortly thereafter, they moved to Oregon for work on the railroad and to raise their family.

They were blessed with 8 children, a foster son, and their spouses, and 17 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

Their home has always been filled with love. Family, or not, anyone is welcomed by them.

They also lived in Macomb for 36 years, while Ed practiced medicine and Molly completed a PhD and taught at Western Illinois University.

They have four children, Gretchen (Greg Krogen) Baker of Culver City, California; Grant Baker of Rockford; Maren (Matt) Baker Swank of Boise, Idaho; and Mitchell (Kali Moody) Baker of Alexandria, Virginia; and grandchildren, Willa, Hollis and Rian Swank; Svea Krogen and Lila Baker.

In 2012, they retired to the Baker family farm (founded in 1843) in rural Mt. Morris. A celebratory trip with family is scheduled for next summer.

Forreston picks up the pieces after violent storm

Just 24 hours after Forreston sustained tree and wire damage to 48 blocks from an afternoon storm, both public and private workers had cleared “at least” 90 percent of trees and debris.

“It’s a tribute to the people around here,” Village President Mark Metzger said. “Just the fact when you see something like this everyone comes together to help each other out. We’ve had people help with patching roofs, you name it.

From that standpoint, it’s amazing.

On the other hand, living and growing up in this area, it’s something you’re expected to do and it really is no surprise.”

Forreston, currently under a disaster proclamation, is still without power and natural gas. Metzger and Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle said ComEd would be starting its work on Tuesday evening, but there is no timeline for the return of services.

Thirteen blocks had buildings sustain structural damage. Candlelight mobile home park took the brunt of the storm, an area which Forreston Fire Department Chief Mark Daws called “basically total devastation.”

The center of operations has been Forreston’s Fire Department building. A cooling bus has been provided there for the community and workers along with ice, water and a chance to cool down.

Some residents claim they have been told they could be without power for the remainder of the week.

“I think whenever something like this happens and you’re without power, the rumor mill starts going and it escalates,” Metzger said.

“They haven’t given us a time. I’m hoping it will be much sooner than the weekend. We have a lot of poles snapped and repairs that need to be done.”

The Red Cross and the Salvation Army are in the area helping those affected with food, water and resources. The Salvation Army fed 200 people for breakfast and 150-200 for both lunch and dinner on Tuesday.

A shelter was established at the Leaf River Complex for those displaced from their homes, but it was not used Monday evening.

“Nobody took advantage of it or showed up,” Metzger said. “Typically we find when this happens is friends and families take those

That’s what happened. As of right now, that shelter is no longer needed. Everyone we’ve talked to is staying with friends and family.”

Damage assessment was scheduled to begin Wednesday. Building structures will be evaluated by experts. Forreston’s Township building was among the ones to sustain damage.

“They’re going to take a look at the whole situation,” Metzger said.

“I understand these engineers can detect stuff that can’t be seen with the common eye. Once we get that assessment we’ll have a clearer picture of what is damaged and what isn’t.”

The village took to its Facebook page Tuesday to advise those affected on what steps to take. They included cautioning the hiring of contractors, as village hall plans to look into which are license and insured.

There is an 8:30 p.m. curfew in place in Forreston until further notice that will be “strictly enforced.”

Verizon has provided chargers and WiFi at the fire department.

The Red Cross and Salvation Army donated tools like rakes and shovels to help with cleanup. Residents displaced by the storm and in need of shelter or other needs, can call the Red Cross at 877-597-0747.

“If people have uninsured loss or damage to property, please talk to the fire department or village officials as soon as possible,” Metzger said.

VanVickle anticipates the county and additional resources will stay in the village through at least the end of the week.

“I would imagine for cleanup it’ll be through the end of the week,” VanVickle said. “For food and things it’ll be for a while. There’s no fuel or power in town. We’re trying to support them.”

After Monday’s storm that included winds over 100 miles per hour, 375,000 people were without power north of Interstate 80 in Illinois.

That included 7,500 Ogle County residents. Power lines were still down as of Tuesday evening. Sixteen county roads were closed due to downed line and damage, Sheriff Brian VanVickle said.

Some claimed they have been told that the could be without power for the remainder of the week while ComEd makes its way to the area to repair transmission lines and poles.

“That’s been a concern and we continue to address it where it hit the hardest,” VanVickle said. “We have the Red Cross and the Salvation Army getting people the things they need. We’re making sure everyone gets the basics.”

VanVickle said ComEd has been trying to get extra workers and was scheduled to make its way to Forreston Tuesday evening — the part of the county that was hit the worst.

Tree removal was done in areas where possible Tuesday to clear the way for ComEd when workers make their way to the area.

“With public and private help, we’re getting people back in their homes,” VanVickle said. “We’re in a good position today after a lot of work. There’s no current timeline from ComEd though.”

VanVickle said cleanup will continue through the end of the week and food and resource availability will likely be longer than that, especially for the community of Forreston, which currently has no electrical power.

The sheriff is no stranger to devastating storms. A tornado destroyed his home in 2015 near Rochelle. Storms have been common in the years since.

But so has support from community members.

“That’s one thing we see,” VanVickle said. “We see storms like this every year now, unfortunately. Every time that rural midwest group comes to help people. People come from all over.

That’s exactly what you expect living here.”

Ogle County Brewery to open in Oregon this fall Microbrewery will have ‘something for everyone’

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com When Joshua Skinner and Brian Wynn first discussed opening a microbrewery late last year, they were joking.

“Earlier this year, we thought it could be good for us and the community,” Wynn said. “We got serious in February.”

Now the pair and their third business partner, Mike Basciak, are working to get Ogle County Brewery open this fall in Oregon’s old National Clothing building on the corner of Illinois 64 and Illinois 2.

The microbrewery is slated to open in October or November. The city approved its liquor license at a meeting last month.

“We’re passionate about brewing beer on a large scale that we can share with others,” Skinner said.

“More than sitting around with friends and family, but the entire community. There will be something for everyone.”

The beer that Ogle County Brewery produces will be organic. Its products will include blueberry blondes, porters and IPAs. Skinner and Wynn are particularly passionate about “old-school” authentic German beers.

Skinner has been brewing beer in his garage for many years. His capacity there is 24 gallons at a time.

In the new operation, the owners will be able to brew in four five-barrel systems.

Liquor and wine will be served at Ogle County Brewery as well. There will be games to keep people entertained. The plan for food has yet to be devised.

“We’ll have some sort of variety of food,” Wynn said. “Finger food-type stuff will be first. We’ll be teaming up with local restaurants. In the future, we’re not sure where it’ll go.

We want to help the other businesses around us.”

Skinner and Wynn are longtime county residents. Skinner manages several companies both in Illinois and Florida. Wynn has a construction background and works for Thrivent Financial. Basciak is a Florida resident.

Skinner said it was love at first sight with the building that dates back to the 1800s. Wynn agreed.

“The owners want to keep it historical,” Wynn said. “When we approached them they were enthusiastic and partnered with us on our vision. We need it operational, but we also like the historical aspect.”

Williams and the city are excited about the new business, with it filling one of the last open downtown storefronts. TIF money has been made available to Ogle County Brewery.

“It’s going to be a very interesting spot,” Williams said. “We hope to attract new business downtown.

People go on microbrewery tours.

Sometimes you need something to get things started.”

The microbrewery plans to have around 10 employees, Wynn said.

It will start on a revolving basis, which could change depending on where the COVID-19 pandemic stands during opening.

Aug. 4 Brandon Kluesner, 33, of Lindenwood was arrested at 8:21 p.m. for driving while license suspended after deputies conducted a traffic stop on 7th Street at Carrie Avenue in Rochelle. Kluesner was given a $2,500 I-Bond and released from the scene with a future court date.

Juan Garcia, 43, of Rochelle was arrested for not having a valid driver’s license after being stopped for speeding by deputies on Illinois 251 near Bethel Road. Garcia was released on a I-Bond and will appear in court at a later date.

Leonardo F. Gonzalez was arrested at 9:55 p.m. for driving while under the influence, open alcohol, no driver’s license and speeding after deputies stopped a 2001 Ford Expedition for speeding, 84 mph in a 55 mph zone. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail

Aug. 6 Kevin Anderson, 63, of Leaf River was arrested for battery after deputies responded to a disturbance at 10722 N. Pecatonica Rd. Two Neighbors were involved in an argument. Anderson was taken to the Ogle County Jail and held pending bond.

The OCHD reported its fifth death in the county on July 10, its first since June 1. Ages and locations of the individuals are not being released to protect their privacy.

Aug. 7 Joe Molette, 22, of Chicago was arrested at 9:01 p.m. for improper cannabis container after deputies conducted a traffic stop in the 6,000 block of South Illinois 26 for an equipment violation. Molette was released on a notice to appear in court.

OBITUARIES BILL B. BECKER OREGON – Bill B. Becker, 90, a longtime Oregon resident, passed away Thursday, August 6, 2020 in Rock River Hospice Home, Sterling.

He was born August 11, 1929 in Marseilles, the son of Howard and Valdean (Marks) Becker.

He married Mary Anne Robertson Sept. 15, 1950.

DORAN A. GRENNAN OREGON – Doran Aquinas Grennan, 92, passed away August 9, 2020, with his family at his side.

He was born in 1927 in Breckenridge, Minnesota, the youngest son of Michael and Agnes Grennan. He grew up on the farm in North Dakota, and later Illinois.

GERALD ‘JAY’ MEDLAR JR. MT. MORRIS – Jay Medlar passed away on August 5, 2020. He was surrounded by family and friends for years throughout along fought battle with cancer.

He was born on Aug. 29, 1957 in St. Charles. He graduated from Oregon High School in 1975.

Jay was employed at Woods Equipment Company from February 1978, retiring in April 2018.

Jay married Laura (Inocencio) on May 6, 1995.

In 2013, Jay proudly welcomed granddaughter Harmony. She was the apple of his eye.

In 2018, a second granddaughter, Jasmine would be added to the family when

Bill graduated from Oregon High School with the class of 1948 and served in the Army National Guard in Dixon.

He worked many years at Kable Printing in Mt. Morris, where he served his apprenticeship in photo engraving, and for 34 years at Black-

hawk Engraving and Combined Communications in Oregon, retiring in 1994.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Oregon.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 70 years, Mary Anne Becker of Oregon; sons, Barry (Kathy) Becker of Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, Howard (Nancy) Becker of Oregon and Randy Becker of Mt. Morris; daughter, Val (Dan) Herriot of Oregon; seven grandchildren; and 13

great-grandchildren.

He is predeceased by his parents and sister, Rachael Hardesty.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a private graveside service was held at Byron Cemetery.

river. There were numerous trips to Vegas, Hawaii, Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry and Sunday drives to Ripps for chicken.

He loved taking the grandkids to the Pizza Ranch. His love for and time spent with his kids and grandkids were some of his happiest moments.

He is survived by his wife of almost 70 years, Frieda; two children, Jeanne

(Jack) Leamanczyk; Jim (Kim) Grennan; four grandchildren, Chad Broderick, Brittany Asay, Seth (Meggan) Grennan, and Carri (Craig) Tommey; six great-grandchildren, Alexandra, Sean, Shea, Finn, Liam, and Madison James. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews who were very dear to his heart.

He and Laura enjoyed many vacations, especially with their friends in Florida during the winter, participating in Euchre parties and tournaments making dear, wonderful friends and memories through the decades.

Jay touched many hearts. He is remembered by family and countless friends as happy and fun-loving (sometimes mischievous!), generous and kind,

and was an “always willing to help” kind of fella.

His positive spirit was infectious and he will be missed deeply.

Jay is survived by Laura, his wife of 25 years, daughter, Natalie (Jeremy) Coy, and granddaughters, Harmony and Jasmine all of Mt. Morris; his mother, Patricia Medlar, Oregon; sister Carolee (Michael) James, Dixon; and mother-in-law Marybeth Inocencio, Coal City.

Very special to his heart, friends Steve Tieman, Oregon; Bradd Kettleson, Rochelle; and Debbie Dickson, Oregon.

Jay was predeceased by his father, Gerald Medlar Sr., and father-in-law, Adolfo Inocencio.

ESPN radio host drops a line and lands a pike Kaplan fishes with favorite Dixonites—his wife and his father in-law

BY ERIC INGLES eingles@saukvalley.com FULTON – You can find Ron Semetis on the water fairly often. The longtime fixture in Dixon sports, from his time coaching wrestling and tennis to his time as Dukes wrestling’s official scorekeeper, enjoys his time fishing, often in his favorite spot on the Mississippi River near Fulton.

Last Saturday, he was out on the water with another avid angler, his daughter Mindy, as well as someone who hasn’t been out fishing in a long time: his son-in-law, David Kaplan.

Kaplan, the host of Kap and Co. on ESPN 1000 in Chicago and Sports Talk Live on NBC Sports Chicago, has picked up a fishing pole before, but it’s been a while. This was his first fishing trip since he was 7.

He had been out fishing a few times with his dad when he was young, fishing off a dock sometimes, but he wasn’t much of an outdoorsman.

“I’ll play a billion rounds [of golf] a year with you if you want, but I was just never a camping, fishing, hunting guy; it’s just not who I am,” he said. “But my wife loves it.

Our kids aren’t at home any more, so when she said it and I’m driving to work, I thought about it and thought ‘I’ve got to do this.’”

The Aug. 1 trip was Mindy’s idea. She likes to fish for bluegill, so they planned to go after those, as well as pike and crappie.

“She calls and wants to know how the fish are biting,” Semetis said. “... I went Wednesday, and my fiancée and I caught about 20 pike. She said, ‘You know, I think I may try to get out this weekend.’”

At first Kaplan wasn’t going to join them, then decided to tag along. He called his wife to tell her he was in, and even told his listeners he was headed to the Sauk Valley to drop a line with Semetis.

“So we went, we hung out with Ron all day, it was awesome,” Kaplan said.

They headed out to one of Semetis’ favorite spots, pool 14 between Clinton and Davenport, a spot that offers up a wide variety of fish.

“We caught some nice crappies,” Semetis said. “We caught some nice bluegills and released all the pike. We caught about eight pike and missed about eight more. Some you get in, and some get away.”

The biggest catch of the day came from the least-experienced fisherman: Kaplan pulled in a 37-inch, 12-pound Northern pike.

He needed a bit of a refresher course before heading out onto the water, but luckily had a pair of veteran anglers to show him the ropes.

“Big pike make a run, and you’d better have your drag set properly, otherwise they’ll just break the line,” Semetis said. “So we went over what to do before we got on the waters.

He played it nicely.”

Kaplan didn’t quite get the hang of all of it – taking the fish off the hook was a bit of an issue – but other aspects came easily.

“I was an athlete, so I feel like I can cast, and I was able to do that pretty successfully,” Kaplan said. “Just understanding that there’s different kind of fishing. He had me first casting and I got the Northern, and then he had me fishing with a jig and a minnow, and then we did this one where you’re hanging out with a bobber and a worm.”

“He’d always talked on his radio show that there’s no skill involved in fishing, it’s just luck,” Semetis said, “and maybe I changed his mind a little about that, because there were times that we didn’t catch any fish for 5, 10 minutes, and that’s the learning curve he had to pick up on.”

Kaplan liked casting because it’s active, but overall enjoyed just sitting on the boat, kicking his feet up, grabbing a drink and spending time with people he loves.

He’ll jump at chances to spend time with his father-in-law, coming to the Dixon area a few times a year to grab a bite at Arthur’s Garden Deli or play a round at Timber Creek or Emerald Hill, and hosting Semetis and his fiancée often.

“He and I are close. We talk sports and talk on the phone. He’s my guy,” Kaplan said.

So will Kaplan go out again for another fishing trip?

“Oh, 100%.” he said.
