Polo senior center scheduled to open May 3

jhelfrich@shawmedia.com The Polo Senior Center will be opening on Monday, May 3 with regulations have put into place to keep everyone as safe as possible.

“We ask that you enter using the east door, the west door will only be open for emergency use only,” a press release said.

“Masks are required at all times while in the center. If someone is unable to tolerate wearing a mask due to extenuating health issues, they will not be allowed to enter our

building or participate in our activities. We want everyone to feel safe. Members and visitors will maintain social distancing at all times which means six feet from each other unless you live in the same household.”

Hours will be from 8:30 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Monday through Friday.

Upon entering the center, each person’s name and contact information will be recorded and their temperatures will be taken. If visitors have a temperature over 100 degrees they will not be allowed to enter.

If a person has symptoms consistent with COVID-19 or has been exposed to someone

with COVID-19, they are asked to stay home.

“If you belong to the exercise class or would be interested in joining, participants are asked to come to the center on Thursday, May 6 at 9 a.m. for a meeting with Cher,” the release said.

All vaccinated patrons can enjoy cards and Mexican Train.

“We will be expanding our activities as Illinois moves through the Restore Illinois phases,” the release said. “Welcome back!

We are looking forward to seeing all of our old friends as well as new ones!”

Only four weeks remain in my last semester. Plans for an in-person graduation ceremony continue to be made. There are still several projects and papers to complete, but seeing the finish line is a great motivator.

Clint is finishing his quarantine at his new station. There is a much larger time difference so we are struggling to connect.

I shared a few messages with each of my kids throughout the afternoon. Everyone is well which is always great news for their mom.

This past Tuesday evening, I joined our sisters for our regular meeting of PEO Chapter DW. Instead of a program, we finished many business items that were on the agenda. It was good to see so many of my sisters on Zoom.

Over the past few weeks, we are seeing more and more events around our town. It is quite exciting to see the football field being prepared for a game. Even with businesses and restaurants opening and school returning to all in-person, there are still things I miss.

I miss going out on a regular basis. I can’t wait to go back to the movie theater

and the experience that goes with it. I am so grateful for attending school in-person. I remember well the feeling of staying home, weekend after weekend, wondering when we would return to normal.

One thing hasn’t changed, our hope. The hope that sustained us through the early days of the pandemic is the hope that spurs us on to look forward to getting back to normal. Many times we rely on hope to get us through.

Realizing all that God has done and can do gives us hope. We know our faithful God will take care of each of us. As we face each challenge, God is there. When we feel we can’t handle what is in front of us, God is there.

Our hope is sustained because our God is faithful. He keeps His promises and guides us on our path. We can trust in God’s timing and His guidance. We may not always understand, but we know that with God, we can do anything.

I hope to see you next week at our church in the country. Come and join us for a time of worship, prayer, and singing.

With so many April showers already, May should be in full bloom. Already, I can see the first leaves budding on the trees.

Spring is a beautiful time of wonder and beauty. Only God could have made something so amazing. For every good and wonderful thing, we thank Him. This morning in church, we were greeted by Sandra Ford. Pastor Charlotte Hoppe gave the morning message for the second Sunday of Easter. There will be no midweek message this week. Charlotte’s messages from past weeks can be found on our Facebook page.

On Saturday, several members of our church joined the Riffle family for Larry’s funeral. We will miss his musical and artistic talents that he generously shared over the years. Mostly, we will miss our good and kind friend.

In the morning on Saturday, I met a friend from work for breakfast. It was so nice to catch up on events and laugh with each other again. I, like so many others, long for the days of relaxed visiting. Gladly, those days are within reach.

COVID-19 UPDATE

Second variant discovered locally

jhelfrich@shawmedia.com Months ago, the Ogle County Health Department was seeing five new COVID-19 cases per day. Now it’s seeing 20-40 and that has Public Administrator Kyle Auman concerned.

“Things have been very hectic,” Auman said. “We’re getting cases in all different areas of the county. A lot in school athletics. We’re seeing issues at businesses. Positivity is holding steady around five percent. We’re certainly concerned.”

spread has been a lot to keep up with and the difference between past increases is now the OCHD is busy doing vaccination operations.

“We’re spread thin and exhausted,” Auman said.

COVID-19 activity in school athletics has caused the OCHD to start scheduling vaccination clinics for 16-18 year olds at county schools, which Auman said will begin this week.

Auman revealed that a second COVID-19 variant strain has been found in Ogle County. In recent weeks the OCHD said the B.1.1.7 variant from the United Kingdom was found here.

That strain is more highly-transmissible and associated with severe illness.

The California B.1427 strain has also been seen in Ogle County and is

also more high ly-transmissible.

The OCHD is working on helping with antibody treatment for those that may need it in association with the variants.

“Because of those variants, Kyle Auman we’re pushing for a strict 14-day quarantine especially for those we know are infected with that,” Auman said. “I think it’s expected to get them here. More people are traveling.”

Auman said the current spread’s future will depend on the wave of variants and people adhering to masking and getting vaccinated. The OCHD is

trying to remain optimistic, he said.

The state’s current bridge to phase 5 reopening plan doesn’t seem attainable for Ogle County at this point, Auman said.

“Right now with our current numbers, we’re there with vaccine numbers, but with cases and positivity, we need 28 days with a decrease or stabilization before we can start counting days,” Auman said. “We’re not there yet.”

Auman has long said that public health professionals have predicted another COVID-19 wave.

“It appears to be true,” Auman said.

“Based on numbers from the state, we haven’t seen the peak of this wave.

We’ll continue to see an increase in cases. It’s hard to know how long this wave will last.”

Johnson & Johnson vaccines paused in Ogle County No reports of adverse effects locally

jhelfrich@shawmedia.com Ogle County Health Department Public Administrator Kyle Auman said Tuesday that local Johnson & Johnson vaccinations have been put on pause.

The Illinois Department of Public Health on Tuesday paused the use of the J&J COVID-19 vaccine out of an abundance of caution.

The Center for Disease Control and Food and Drug Administration are reviewing data involving six reported U.S. cases of a rare and severe type blood clot in individuals after receiving the J&J vaccine, out of a total of more than six million Americans who have received the J&J vaccine.

In Illinois, of the total 7.3 million doses administered to date, 4 percent or approximately 290,000 have been J&J. These individuals remain fully vaccinated and do not need to seek out an alternate vaccine.

People vaccinated with J&J should consult with their medical provider if they develop severe headache, abdominal pain, leg pain, or shortness of breath within three weeks after vaccination.

“We will continue with Moderna and Pfizer clinics,” Auman said. “The state has offered additional doses of Pfizer and Moderna to replace J&J doses needed for clinics. The OCHD has 275 J&J doses on hand.”

There have been no reports in Ogle County of anyone having issues after receiving the J&J vaccine, Auman said.

The OCHD most recently conducted a J&J clinic on Monday at the Oregon Fire Department.

A mass vaccination site was conducted with the Illinois National Guard on April 1 where 1,200 Johnson & Johnson vaccines were adminis-

tered. Clinics were also held April 5 and 6 at the OCHD in Oregon where more Johnson & Johnson doses were administered.

“We have administered several hundred if not thousands in the past couple weeks,” Auman said “There have been millions given in the country and there’s only a handful of issues.

Hopefully they deem it safe again. It is something to be aware of and concerned about.”

Auman believes the J&J pause was appropriate to take necessary precautions. But, he said the change in plans will create setbacks as far as getting people vaccinated. The OCHD planned to use J&J for drive thru clinics in coming weeks.

The convenience of the one-shot J&J vaccine has aided health departments during recent vaccination operations.

“J&J is done after two weeks,” Auman said. “Now it’s six weeks for the others and more staff time. It takes much longer. There’s a few different challenges and concerns.”

Auman is unsure how much the pause will slow operations. J&J operations had already dropped from 400 last week to 100 this week and next for the OCHD. He’s unsure how many “replacement” doses of Moderna and Pfizer will come from the state, as no specific guidance has been provided yet.

Recent ramped-up vaccination operations have resulted in “serious headway,” Auman said.

“We’re right around 20 percent fully-vaccinated,” Auman said. “We’re on par with the rest of the region.

About 26,000 doses administered with 10,500 fully-vaccinated. We’re happy with the progress.”

Auman said communications with the state regarding vaccine operation are going well and have improved.

While vaccinations have increased, there is still much work left to do, Auman said.

“We’re anticipating we’ll get to a point where demand decreases and supply is larger,” Auman said. “But we’re not there yet. We’re getting a lot from the suburbs inquiring about getting the vaccine here. Demand is good.”

Jay’s Drive-In now open with new menu boards

jhelfrich@shawmedia.com Jay’s Drive-In Owner Terry Wilken found it tough to let go of the 40-yearold menu boards at his business.

The carhop boards were replaced with new models earlier this year.

They were relied on heavily last year during the still-ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and Wilken decided to invest in the future after Jay’s had a record-breaking year in 2020.

“The old ones gave us problems,” Wilken said. “But I fixed them myself, kind of like working on old cars. Hopefully I can figure these new ones out.

People have asked to buy them. I guess I’m going to sell them. I’ll set a day aside to do it.”

The new boards are completely installed, but the new menu inserts still haven’t arrived yet. Temporary menus are currently being used. The new boards no longer use analog like

“It’s been good,” Wilken said. “I’m seeing a lot of people staying outside and that surprised me. The dining room is open now and a lot are still

staying out. I was shocked by that.”

Wilken decided to open the dining room back up due to vaccinations being up and the county trending closer towards the “endemic.” He believes the dining room can be managed safely with the capacity limit and sanitization.

After a record-breaking sales year, Wilken says this year will be a challenge. He hopes to get back to doing pre-pandemic things like cruise nights.

“It’ll be challenging to keep up with last year,” Wilken said. “People will have more options. Last year people experienced Jay’s again, because it was one of their few options.”

Wilken spends the winters at Jay’s largely alone while it’s closed making improvements. This past winter, he installed new flooring in the dining room, re-covered some walls and freshened things up. There’s also a new ice cream machine.

“It’s nice to see everyone back again,” Wilken said. “I spend all winter in there by myself. Sometimes I think it’d be easier to stay open. It’s like starting all over again every time.”

ay in 1919 was a busy month in Polo and they called it a “building boom.”

They were busy at the Edgewood Golf Course west of town remodeling the old Masonic Hall that had traveled from the corner of Mason and Franklin to old Barber Park.

Instead of a temple in the middle of town, it would now be a club house out in the country. Members of the private golf course had been busy getting ready for it. They had been wanting a club house for a long time.

There were other buildings going to that area also according to the May 15, 1919 Tri-County Press article.

It stated “The old W. S. Miller house has about reached its destination in Barber’s Park where it will be made into a farm house.” Nancy Grossnickle always said Ed’s mother told me that the farm house had been moved out there also. The W. S. Miller house had stood on North Division. We do not know where the old Miller house had been on North Division, but where it had been, concrete footings were being put in for a new house to be built there according to the newspaper.

The “Park Farm” as they called it in the Oct. 21, 1943 Tri-County said the farm consisted of 181 acres and Feb. 10 of 1944 said the golf course rented 38 acres.

Polo Historical Society I also found an article on Barber’s Park and according to that article they used the track for exercising and training horses. Racing was not mentioned. The last events that had been held were in 1922 and 1923.

They had baseball, boxing, and a parachute jump from an airplane. Maybe they never had races but many thought they did. They did have fine thoroughbred horses.

The Barber barn was also going to be moved out near the farm house. It was quite a barn according to Nancy and it seemed logical for it to be out near the track. The day came when the barn burned and you could see it for miles around.

The Fry garage in the center of town was also being built at that time along with a new house going up where the old Miller house had once been. F. H. Hendrix was redoing the old Smith Meat Market so Polo was going to look really sharp with all this

reconstruction.

At that time old buildings were simply moved to a new site and they were redone. Everything was utilized and one did not tear anything down. Word had gone out to the community that if you needed a job, there was something for you to do to help make the community a better place.

The new Masonic building was going up at the corner of Mason and Franklin.

The Masons would have their part upstairs with new offices also. At that time they were not quite certain what would be in the bottom part of the building.

In the previous building, the James Pool Hall had been there along with the Polo Marble Works.

As it turned out, T. H. Bracken’s Style Shop moved from across the street to the new Masonic building and became: “THE SNAPPIEST STORE IN THE SNAPPIEST TOWN OF ITS SIZE IN THE STATE,” according to its ad in the old plat book.

How many of you remember that Bracken’s was connected to Carson Pirie Scott & Co? That was one of my early columns of 1998. The problem is that it is not on my computer so I will need to recopy it.

Lucky for me that I put a copy of it in the Bracken file.

Fessler, Kauffman led Oregon suffrage movement

Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon has researched the people, places and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is one of a series of the articles he has written.

uring our early history women were denied some of the basic rights enjoyed by

men.

For ex am ple mar ri ed wo men couldn’t own property, had no legal claim to any money they might earn and no female had the right to vote.

They were expected to do house work, raise a family and stay out of politics.

In Illinois women were not allowed to vote from 1818 to 1920 when the 19th Amendment was passed. “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the States or by any State on account of sex.”

Other events in 1920 were the first commercial radio broadcast aired and the League of Nations was established.

When we vote today some people are not aware of the incredible fight women had to wage for the right to vote.

Women suffrage in the United States was achieved gradually at state and local levels during the late 19 th Century and early 20th Century, culminating with the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution.

Laura Fessler and Rebecca Kauffman led the movement for suffrage in the Oregon area.

Fessler, from Oregon, won a prize in 1914 for an essay “What Effect will Women’s Suffrage have on the human condition?”

Fessler was also responsible for securing the Iron Mike drinking fountain and Rebecca Kauffman was a leader in securing the White Pines State Park.

Another Oregon Resident Supreme Court Judge James Cartwright on March 5 clarified the legality of the Women’a Suffrage law. He said this was brought to the Supreme Court by Chicago Lawyers and that all laws are valid until it is shown that it is not constitutional.

He said that if the law was held unconstitutional by the Supreme Court the votes of women would be kept separate to simplify the recount.

In Illinois an article in the Oregon Newspaper stated it appears that the constitutional amendment has made

void the Illinois law which prohibits women from voting for constitutional offices, such as Justices of the Peace, Constables, Police Magistrates, Etc. James L. McDowell State’s Attorney, Oregon, Illinois stated “Under amendment to the constitution of the United States women are entitled to vote at all elections same as male voters.

Separate ballots, ballot boxes and poll books should be used for women.”

I guess they didn’t want to contaminate the male ballots with the women

ballots. Later the newspaper reported the Nineteenth Amendment had done away with the two sets of ballots used for several years past in various elections in Illinois. “(To Instruct Women Voters) The Oregon Equal Suffrage Association will hold an instruction voting for women on Friday and Saturday afternoons of this week from 2 to 5 o’clock, at the polling place in the basement of the northeast corner of the court

house.

Special ballots will be used and the voting carried out the same as on election day. Every woman in Oregon township interested in learning to mark her ballot correctly on April 7 is urged to attend these trial ballots.

fter being gone the last week and a half, I was having a difficult time coming up with something locally topical to the highschool sports scene. However, before writers block completely set in, I recall an e-mail sent to me by Roy Snyder a few weeks ago.

The IWCOA has a neat format, in which the girls wrestle Monday, fresh-soph on Tuesday and Wednesday, 1A on Thursday, 2A on Friday and 3A on Saturday. It is somewhat similar to what a private entity did in conducting a state cross country meet last fall.

The reason the IWCOA has stepped up to do a state meet is that the IHSA has taken a pass on it this year. For a while, there were Covid-related concerns that wrestling would not even be contested.

Schools will be allowed to have dual and triangular meets, with practice starting on Monday.

Regionals and sectionals would be the two weeks prior to the state meet at Springfield. Without the IHSA’s blessing on a state series, it makes sense as to why the IWCOA is having problems finding schools to host them.

Best wishes to Roy and the good people at the IWCOA as they attempt to create a post season from scratch.

Wrestlers who have played baseball or did track and field in the past will have the difficult decision of choosing one or the other, unless of course your school has a policy of allowing a person to do multiple sports at the same time.

Oregon volleyball wraps up next week with a BNC tournament. Under first-year coach Farrell Cain, the Hawks continue to roll, boosting a 10-2 record as of my press deadline of Monday. Tough games with Mendota and Rock Falls remained.

State-ranked Rock Falls, with its only loss to defending state 3A champ Sterling, is the team to beat at the conference tourney. Lutheran, G-K, Mendota and Oregon will also be up near the top.

The NUIC does not have a league wrap-up, but Forreston and Polo get to play traditional power Eastland next week. As usual, the NUIC was tough as ever on the volleyball court, with Dakota, Freeport Aquin, Galena and Eastland leading the way.

Odd factoid of last week was Rockford Jefferson losing a football game 86-6 to Rockford East. How does that happen with a running clock and East opting to run between the tackles instead of going for big plays, like Lutheran did in embarrassing Dixon by a similar score a few years ago.

About the only thing that makes sense is Jefferson lying down and not making any effort to stop East. Yes, they haven’t had a winning season in nearly 30 years, but losing 86-6 should not happen.

K9 Haze joins Ogle sheriff’s department Grant from Firehouse Subs covers the cost

K9 Haze has joined the ranks thanks to a $13,000 grant from the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation, which covered 100 percent of his expenses.

He and his handler, Deputy Zac Hare, will join Deputy Shippert and K9 Duke to complete the K9 Unit at the Sheriff’s Office.

The additional dog will allow Ogle County to have a K9 Team on duty every day.

Walmart Store #8297 also awarded a supplemental grant to cover equipment for the K9 Unit.

“We are committed to helping organizations such as the Ogle County Sheriff’s Office continue their life saving work within local communities,” Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation Executive Director Robin Peters said in a press release. “We are honored to be able to award this grant and do our part to ensure that Ogle County is safer for everyone, including first responders.”

The K9 will assist in locating missing/endangered persons, handler protection, criminal apprehension and drug detection.

The grant was one of 96 Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation awarded to public safety organizations across the country during the most recent grant application period. The 96 grants total more than $1.8 million.

Hands Quilters meet monthly

jhelfrich@shawmedia.com FAITHful Hands Quilters from Faith Lutheran Church in Forreston made nine quilts for the 310 Sibling Home in Forreston.

The quilts were made by the ladies in the group and were professionally quilted by one of the members.

Thrivent Financial provided the funds for the material needed to make the nine quilts.

The 310 Sibling Home, a project by Believe in the Children in Forreston, will open April 17 and will serve as a safe place for at-risk children to be placed along with their siblings.

FAITHful Hands Quilters started in 2016. There are 11 quilters and they meet three times a month.

The quilts are made for Lutheran World Relief and for shut-ins. Blackhawk Hills offering free ventilation testing

jhelfrich@shawmedia.com Free ventilation tests are available to all northwest Illinois businesses, nonprofits, and government agencies through Blackhawk Hills Regional Council (BHRC), the area’s regional planning organization based out of Rock Falls.

Results are not shared with anyone except the business owner and there is no charge for any of the services. The program is funded by the CARES Act. Although there are no ventilation requirements for operating businesses, it can be helpful to know what a safe occupancy capacity is and the report each business receives after testing can be used to seek funding for upgrades to HVAC systems.

BHRC’s Indoor Air Quality Specialist, Tim Benedict said the project stemmed from COVID-19 safety concerns.

“Fresh air is good in so many ways, well beyond COVID-19 and giving local businesses free tests,” Benedict said.

“The report I generate is totally confidential and offers suggestions. They can use it to get funding. I’ve done every area library. One test is dropping off a carbon dioxide monitor. If they want I can do a more involved air exchange rate test.”

Benedict said most reports come back and say the air is safe and the tests provide more of a sense of security.

The tests show the safe amounts of patrons to be allowed inside based on air filtration.

Most infections are spread through air droplets. If we can improve ventilation it could save lives. And fresh air makes it more productive. We’re not doing houses and we don’t offer followup services.”

“To get the same quality and quantity of air purification from a commercial system, it would likely cost thousands,” Benedict said.

Known as the Corsi Box or Comparetto Cube, the homemade air purifiers will filter between 500-900 cubic feet per minute, depending on the filters and fan speed. When constructed with filters rated MERV-13 or higher, they will trap 98% of airborne particles as small as .3 microns, including viruses, bacteria, smoke, dust, pollen, mold, mites and pet dander.

The suspension takes effect retroactively to Friday, April 9. OHS health staff will be contacting families with additional information regarding quarantine procedures.

Oregon and Polo schools plan prom, graduation

jhelfrich@shawmedia.com Tom Mahoney has seen how resilient students can be during the past year amid COVID-19.

They may not need pre-pandemic level end of year events like prom, graduation and sports, but they deserve them, he said.

“I deeply believe kids are resilient,” Mahoney, the Oregon School District Superintendent said. “They’ll be fine regardless. But it doesn’t mean these things aren’t important. They help kids to navigate early adulthood and give them as much as we can.”

Oregon plans to hold graduation May 15 at its football field with 20 percent capacity in the stands as well as people on green space. The Ogle County Health Department will provide further guidance on how many and state restrictions may change before then.

“Phase 4.5, my concern is that there will still be restrictions,” Mahoney said. “That won’t allow for the full graduation. We hope to get as many people there as possible.”

Oregon’s prom is planned for May 1 and it will be held inside the Blackhawk Center as well as in a tent outside. Fifty people will be allowed in each area and students will abide by masking and social distancing guidelines in place at the time.

“I do think they deserve these things,” Mahoney said. “Leadership, service and activities are just as important as learning. We’re doing everything we can.”

Mahoney said he’s yet to reflect on the year that has been so far. He’s still been working on what school will look like going forward with ever-changing guidelines.

A Savanna man has been accused of beating his girlfriend’s husband to death with his bare hands before investigators say he and she dumped his body in the Mississippi.

Levi “T.J.” Meyers, 35, is charged in JoDaviess Circuit Court with five counts of first-degree murder, concealment of a homicidal death and aggravated battery in the death of Keith A. Heidenreich Jr., whose body was found March 10 at Miller’s Boat Landing, about 4 miles north of Savanna at the northern entrance to Palisades State Park.

If convicted of murder, Meyers would be sentenced to 20 to 60 years without parole.

He was appointed a public defender; he has a preliminary hearing April 21 via Zoom.

Initial reports had his last name as Meyer, and

Investigators say that he was living in Hanover with with Danielle Heidenreich, 39, who also has a Savanna address, court papers show, and that their residence is where Keith Heidenreich was killed.

She is charged with concealment of a homicidal death, punishable by 2 to 5 years, and obstructing justice, which carries 1 to 3 years. She is being held on $250,000 bond. She also was appointed a public defender and has a preliminary hearing April 21 via Zoom.

Meyers can be convicted of only one of the five murder charges; the state’s attorney files multiple charges to give a jury a variety of elements of consider when determining a verdict.

In the case, the counts accuse Meyers of beating Heidenreich with intent to kill, with intent to do great bodily harm, knowing the beating would kill him, knowing there was a strong probability it would kill him, or knowing there was a probability it would cause him great bodily harm.

If the jury finds any of the five elements true, that will be the charge upon which he is convicted.

Two teenagers killed in car accident west of Amboy

The two 14-year-olds who died in a one-vehicle crash last Saturday west of Amboy were Brecken Kooy and Cayley Krug, both of Dixon, the Lee County Sheriff’s Department said in an April 13 news release.

As of Tuesday, another passenger, Madison Rockwood, 14, of Amboy, was in fair condition at Peoria Children’s Hospital, and driver Draven Webb, 19, of Dixon, was in OSF St. Anthony Medical Center in Rockford, also in fair condition, the release said.

The collision occurred around 4:15 p.m. on Robbins Road south of Amboy Road.

The crash is under investigation, and no further details were released.

The release did not say if weather was a factor, but it was raining at the time, and had been raining most of the day, the National Weather Service said.

Cayley, daughter of Chris and Cathleen Krug, was a freshman at Dixon High School and a past member of Key Club and youth softball.

In addition to her parents, she also is survived by her siblings Dustin, Colton, Austin and Christopher Krug, her paternal grandmother, Vicki Brantner of Dixon, her maternal grandparents, Larry and Bertha Newton of Chadwick, and aunts Cindy Newton of Polo, Cherie Newton of Erie, and Chris Aude of Chadwick.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Jones Funeral Home in Dixon. Her funeral Saturday will be private.

A memorial has been established to the Dixon High School Athletics Department.

16 OBITUARIES JANET A. BUFFINGTON FORRESTON – Janet Arlene Buffington, 86, of Forreston, passed away Wednesday, April 7, 2021 in her home, surrounded by loved ones.

Janet was born Sept. 20, 1934 in Freeport, the daughter of Harry and Mabel (Whitacre) Krull. Janet was married to the love of her life, Robert “Bob” Buffington for 67 years. Mr. Buffington passed away October 26, 2019.

Janet enjoyed spending time with family and watching them grow as the years went by. She took many trips with Bob and friends.

Often the trips included her passion for birdwatching. Janet was also active at Forreston First United Methodist Church where she was a member.

She enjoyed working with the church family on community and church activities.

Janet was happy to say she was a member of the United Methodist Ladies for over 65 years. Janet was a cook at the Forreston Grade School for over 25 years.

Surviving is her son, Jim (Terri) Buffington; and daughters, LuAnn (Randy Sheffner, Cherie (Mark) Lower, and Charlene (Bill) White. Also surviving are 16 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

Janet was preceded in death by her parents;husband; and grandchildren, Jim Bob Buffington and Chasidey Porter.

A private family service was held April 13.

Burial was at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.

Memorials have been established for First United Methodist Church and Serenity Hospice in Janet’s memory.

BETTY MARY ELLEN CROFT OREGON – Betty Mary Ellen Croft, 94, of Oregon, died April 9, 2021 in Pinecrest Manor Nursing Home, Mt. Morris.

She was born Nov. 23, 1926, in Leaf River, daughter of Milford Lewis “M.L.” and Eva (Welty) Croft. Betty’s mother died in 1928 when she was 1 1/2 years old.

Betty went to live with her grandparents, John D. and Addie Croft in Leaf River. Raised by her grandparents, she experienced what it was like to grow up in the Great Depression.

Her grandpa, John D. Croft died the year before Betty graduated valedictorian at Leaf River High School in 1944. She was awarded the County Scholarship to the University of Illinois.

After graduation, Betty and her Grandma Croft moved to Urbana, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in Latin, Phi Beta Kappa, Beta Phi Mu and Bronze Tablet honors.

She went on to earn two advanced degrees in the classics and library science. Betty worked for the University of Illinois through the 1950s, ‘60s, and ‘70s, retiring as a full professor.

From 1960 until her retirement, she was head of the library catalogue department. At that time, it was the third largest library in the United States.

Following the U of I, Betty sought a slower pace and accepted a position as Technical Advisor for Northwest Missouri State University Library in Maryville, Missouri.

During her 12 years at MSU, she was an advisor on the design of their new library building and, her last two years, Director of the Library.

From Maryville, Betty moved back to Ogle County where she became known as a “tourism advocate” for Oregon, writing and printing at her own expense a number of brochures to tell some of Oregon’s rich heritage.

Betty identified local sculptures and named them in her “Sculpture Trail” brochure. She produced “Margaret Fuller’s Visit to Oregon,” identified “Seven Wonders of Oregon,” and produced a postcard of Black Hawk.

Continuing with her interest in the arts and Oregon’s connection to the famed sculptor, Lorado Taft, Betty organized a performance of the tableau vivant “The Blind” by Maeterlinck.

From the original play, Lorado Taft did a sculpture called “The Blind.” When a friend, Lynn Young, found the working model of Taft’s last sculpture called “Aspirations,” Betty bought and donated this to the Oregon Library Art Gallery.

Betty’s love of books was fostered as a high school freshman when a teacher put her in charge of the school library. She loved it. She gained a wide range of knowledge inspired by years of library work.

She was kind, compassionate, and giving.

Betty was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Oregon. She gave time to help establish the Leaf River Historical Museum, to restore Rice Cemetery, to work in the Oregon Genealogy Department of the library, to promote tourism from the Information Booth in Oregon, and at the feet of Black Hawk to tell the story of Lorado Taft and his sculptures in Oregon.

Betty was never married but enjoyed her family.

She is survived by her nephews, Robert (Tonya) Croft Jr. of Boulder, Colorado and John (Karna) Croft of Normal; nieces, Patricia Engle of Rock Island, Sue Ellen Croft of Oregon ,and Crystal (Tim) DePuy of Port St. Joe, Florida; grandnephews and grandnieces, Nicole (David) Reichel, of Colorado, Robert (Audrey) Croft III of Colorado, Taryn (Joe) Stewart of Florida, Eric (Angie) Croft of Illinois, Greg Engle of Iowa, Freeland Bill (Katie) Engle of Wisconsin; Robin Engle of Illinois, Sara Croft of Illinois, Peter Croft, Illinois, and their families; and other dear friends, Sister Marion and Lynn Young, ME. She was predeceased by her parents; her stepmother, Fern Davis Croft; brother, Robert E. Croft; sister, Bonnie M. Carlstrom; and Sister Marion of School Sisters of Notre Dame.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m.

Friday, April 16 in Silver Creek Cemetery, Leaf River.

SHIRLEY A. ORR MT. MORRIS – Shirley A. Orr, 80, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 10, 2021, in her home with her family by her side.

Shirley was born on April 3, 1941 in Cambridge, Illinois, the daughter of Gail and Marjorie (Peterson) Moore. She graduated from Cambridge High School class of 1959.

Shirley was an Augustana Infant Nursery school class of 1960 graduate, and she worked at Wesley Memorial Hospital (Northwestern Hospital), Chicago, in the nursery until August 1965, when she married Glen Orr. Shirley married Glen Orr on Aug. 15, 1965 in Cambridge.

Shirley was a loving mother, wife, and grandmother, and she would do anything for

her family. She was a life master since August 1977 of the American Contract Bridge League, and she loved her small dogs.

Shirley is survived by her husband:, Glen Orr of Mt. Morris; son, David Orr of LaCrosse, Wisconsin; daughter, Kathleen Orr of Oak Grove, Kentucky; granddaughter, Krystal Cortez of San Marcos, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.

Shirley is preceded in death by her parents; brother, Don Moore; and sister, Joyce Robinson.

There will be a celebration of life at a later date this year. Burial was held in Oakwood Cemetery.

MARILYN K. PAZERA MT. MORRIS – Marilyn K. Pazera, 79, of Mt. Morris, passed away on April 6, 2021 in OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford, after a battle with COVID-19.

She was born on March 28, 1942 in Sandwich, the daughter of Howard and Ruth (Brown) Baker. Marilyn grew up on a farm near Leland and graduated from Leland High School class of 1960.

She received her bachelor’s degree from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb in 1965. Marilyn married John Pazera on February 5, 1966 in Leland.

Marilyn spent many years working at Kable News Company in Mt. Morris before retiring in 2007. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Mt. Morris, a board member and volunteer at Loaves & Fish Food Pantry, and a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Marilyn enjoyed reading, gardening, quilting, genealogy, and playing bridge. She enjoyed making chocolate chip cookies for friends and family, but most of all she loved spending time with her family.

Marilyn is survived by her husband, John Pazera of Mt. Morris; daughter, Kathryn (Bob Rapp) Pazera of Oregon; son, John Pazera of Mt. Morris; sister, Janet O’Neil of Marshall, Wisconsin; brother, Kenneth (Penny) Baker of Leland; and many nieces and nephews.

Marilyn is preceded in death by her parents.

April 7 Dwyer White, 25, of Rochelle was arrested at 8:45 p.m. for criminal damage to property and aggravated assault after deputies responded to the 200 block of Powers Road for a domestic disturbance.

White was located at his residence where he was taken into custody. White was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held without bond until a court appearance.

David Linboom, 24, of Dixon was arrested at 9:02 p.m. for driving while license suspended after deputies initiated a traffic stop in the 5,000 block of South Lowell Park Road. Linboom was also cited for operating an uninsured motor vehicle, operating a vehicle with suspended registration, loud exhaust, and window tint.

Linboom was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

Timothy Smith, 54, of Mt. Morris was arrested at 12:55 p.m. for driving while license revoked, no valid registration and operating an uninsured vehicle after deputies performed a traffic stop at the intersection of Mud Creek and Limekiln Roads. Smith was transported to the Ogle

grams, a class 4 felony, possession of controlled substance (heroin) under 15 grams, a class 4 felony and possession of drug paraphernalia class a misdemeanor after deputies executed a search warrant in the 300 block of North Congress Avenue in Polo.

During the search, deputies located Methamphetamine, heroin, cocaine, and drug paraphernalia. Ennenga was taken to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

April 10 Mary Lindquist, 22, of Rockford was arrested at 12:12 a.m. for no valid driver’s license after deputies conducted a traffic stop in the 1,000 block of North Illinois 2.

Lindquist was also issued a citation for operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

Lindquist was transported to the Ogle County Jail where she was released to correctional staff and held in lieu of bond.

April 12 Ericka Munoz, 28, of Rockford was arrested at 2:19 a.m. for no valid driver’s license after deputies conducted a traffic stop in the 8,000 block of North Illinois 251. Munoz was also issued citations for operating an uninsured motor vehicle and an equipment violation. Munoz was transported to the Ogle County Jail where she was released to correctional staff and held in lieu of bond.

Richard Kinney, 65, of Belvidere was arrested at 4:39 p.m. for improper container of cannabis as a driver after deputies located a vehicle stuck in the ditch just off of the northbound ramp on I-39 at Illinois 72. The vehicle had also recently been called in as driving recklessly in the area. Kinney was additionally issued citations for improper lane usage and expired registration. Kinney was released on an I-Bond at the scene and was given a future court date.

April 8 Melissa K. Burns, 39, of Polo, was cited for driving with a revoked drivers license and a written warning for speeding 37 mph in a 30 mph speed zone.
