Ball is now rolling for a new water plant

jhelfrich@shawmedia.com The Polo City Council unanimously approved $25,000 in engineering costs to start on a new water plant project at its Monday meeting.

Willett, Hofmann & Associates will be handling the engineering work. City officials said Monday that the city’s current water plant is “falling apart” and “beyond repair.” Polo recently had to do repair work to one of its wells.

“We had it in the budget last year because there were grants out there in numbers of $800,000 and COVID-19 and other things came up,” Alderman Randy Schoon said. “We just had problems with well two and I’d like to know everyone’s thoughts going forward.”

Even all of creation celebrated the good news today! We enjoyed a beautiful day with family and friends. A warm, sunny day was the backdrop for our Easter celebration. God has shown us the greatest example of love. For the gift of Jesus, we give our thanks.

This morning for our Easter service, we were greeted by James and Nancy Hopkins. Our church was filled with families that were gathering for celebrations. Those participating filled the building with songs of praise.

Pastor Charlotte Hoppe gave the morning message. All of the Lenten sermons are on our Facebook page. Charlotte also continued her midweek, midday prayer time. It was a beautiful time of celebration for Easter.

Many of our families were gathering for a meal. Phil and Deb Ohlwine hosted their children and grandchildren for breakfast before the church service.

James and Nancy Hopkins were joined by their son, Jim Hopkins, his wife, Dana, and their son, Connor for our church service.

Our family didn’t plan a get-together for the holiday, but I did stop by and

Disposal contract

The council reached a consensus in favor of the use of city property for hosting Polo Town & County Days from June 16-20 this summer.

The city only received one sealed quote from disposal agencies after a recent request. Moring Disposal, who is currently contracted with the city, was the only agency to reply.

Moring’s new proposal wouldn’t include picking up yard waste, which city officials said could likely be handled internally.

visit with my brother Ben Bittinger, his wife, Jo, and their sons, Hayden and Garrett. Both of my nephews were home from college for the long weekend.

On Saturday, Pat Garrison and her children Jo Bittinger, Keith Chestnut, and Molly Chestnut, hosted a Celebration of Life for Roger Garrison who passed away last fall. Family and friends gathered to remember this special life.

This past Saturday was the Hazelhurst sale again. I joined the Hopkins family and helped again in the office. The day is long and busy, but I am always glad to help out when I can.

Our church family lost a very special member on Friday. Sadly, Larry Riffle passed away. He was an elder, Sunday School teacher, and provided special music on his guitar and harmonica.

Most of all, he was a dear friend and brother in Christ. He will be greatly missed. Our prayers are with wife Judy and their family.

Clint made it to his destination after almost two days of flying. We are finding different ways to communicate and getting used to the time difference. I am getting back to my routines in my empty nest.

While Clint was home, our conversa-

tions were long and included so many different topics. One night, he asked me to name my top ten favorite things. My list included sunsets, watching a starry night, the colors of the autumn trees, and silence of a gentle snow.

Nearly every item on my list goes back to God. There is nothing greater than His creation. Nature brings us closer to Him. Today’s beautiful weather drew people outside to feel the sunshine.

God’s love is everywhere we look in nature. We see it in the way He takes care of birds and flowers. We feel it in the warmth of the afternoon and cool of the evening. We trust Him because He knows the stars that fill the sky.

That immense love brought Jesus to this earth to spend time with us. That courageous love led Jesus to give His life. And God’s unending love had Jesus rise again. This love draws you in, holds you close, lifts you up, and spurs you on.

He is here for you.

I hope to see you next week as we gather for worship in our new building and on Facebook. Our church family looks forward to welcoming your family.

Health department says B1.1.7 variant identified in county

jhelfrich@shawmedia.com In a Monday press release, the Ogle County Health Department said it’s seen an increase in COVID19 cases over the last several weeks.

Ogle County’s test positivity is over 6 percent and approaching 8 percent.

“The same is occurring for the region and the state,” The release said. “Region 1 positivity is currently 6.3 percent. We are also seeing increased activity in our regional hospitals with ICU bed availability at 21 percent.

The OCHD also said the COVID-19 variant B1.1.7 has been identified in Ogle County communities. The B1.1.7 variant is thought to be more transmissible and could cause more serious health issues.

“We are asking once again for communities to help to slow the spread by following current mitigations,” the release said.

Residents are asked to stay home if they are sick, avoid gathering, social distance, wash hands, wear a mask and get vaccinated. If you become ill, the OCHD asks that you talk to your doctor to see if monoclonal antibody treatment is right for you.

“No single intervention, person or organization can solve this on their own,” the release said. “We need everyone’s help to get this under control.”

The Illinois National Guard and the Ogle County Health Department held a mass vaccination clinic in Byron on April 1. Health officials said 1,200 people received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine during the day-long event at the Byron Middle School in Byron.

1,200 Johnson & Johnson vaccines were administered. Clinics were also held Monday and Tuesday at the OCHD in Oregon where more Johnson & Johnson doses were administered.

According to the OCHD’s Facebook page, it is looking for PRN nurses and additional help for future COVID-19 mass vaccination sites. Clinics will “most likely” be on Wednesdays and Thursdays starting in April.

Clinics like Ogle County’s are in response to increasing cases of COVID-19 in the Region 1 counties

of Carroll, Lee, Ogle and Whiteside.

The Illinois Department of Public Health has seen vaccine demand slow in several counties throughout the state, with early signs of unfilled appointments and increased vaccine inventory. IDPH is authorizing those communities to begin vaccinating all residents 16 and older at their immediate discretion, in order to use the vaccine doses they currently have available.

“Recent increases in hospital admissions and test positivity are concerning new developments and we don’t want to go down the same

path we’ve seen before and experience a resurgence in the pandemic, which is why Gov. Pritzker directed us to use all our resources to halt these upticks,” IDPH Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike said in a news release.

“We cannot move forward if our metrics are going backward. The vaccine will help get us to the end of the pandemic, but we need to continue to reduce spread of the virus by wearing a mask, avoiding large crowds, keeping six feet of distance, getting tested after seeing others, and getting vaccinated as soon as possible.”

Knapp re-elected for third term as Polo Mayor Sundman, Chesnut win contested aldermanic races

jhelfrich@shawmedia.com Polo Mayor Doug Knapp was re-elected for a third term during Tuesday’s consolidated election, tallying 292 votes (56.3 percent) and defeating Ward 3 Alderman Randy Schoon (227 votes, 43.7 percent).

Schoon still has two years remaining as alderman.

“I’ve just always been so proud to serve Polo and it makes me happy they’ve had the faith in me for one more,” Knapp said. “I’ll be 72 at the end of this one. I’m just happy they chose me.”

Johnson was first to work with COVID-19 patients last year

jhelfrich@shawmedia.com Years ago, Debra Johnson drove past Serenity Hospice & Home in Oregon.

“I was like, ‘Oh, hospice. My mom had hospice. I’d really like to work there someday,’” Johnson said.

The now-clinical manager at Serenity took a position later on when a rare job opening came about.

Her passion for nursing came from caring for her mother, who had cancer, since she was 12 years old.

“I wasn’t a nurse when she passed away when I was 27,” Johnson said.

“But she had hospice. So I always told myself that was what I’d like to do, in some form.”

On Wednesday, Johnson was recognized by the Oregon Chamber of Commerce and surprised with its

The award is funded by the Exelon Byron Generating Station.

Johnson said when the first COVID-19 patient was referred to Serenity, the hospice organization was debating whether or not to take them on.

“There was no hesitation for me,” Johnson said. “From the get go, I was like, ‘This is what we do.’ I was scared, I’m not going to lie. But they need us and I didn’t see a reason not to do it. Once I got in there, it was OK. It wasn’t anything that horrible.”

Johnson cared for the patient every day until he passed away.

She cared for more COVID19 patients afterwards. She got acquainted with wearing full personal protective equipment, which was in short supply at the time.

“I just wasn’t sure what I’d find,” Johnson said. “It wasn’t as scary as I thought it’d be. Even though I had the full PPE, I didn’t feel like I was in danger. I just did what I do as a nurse. The wife was so appreciative.

She was scared and in quarantine and had regulations to follow. It was really good for her to have support.”

Continued from Page 5 Johnson had to sacrifice some of her work at Serenity as clinical manager during that time to prevent possible spread. But, when she took the position, she stipulated that she could still see patients in the field, which she has always enjoyed.

The rest of the staff at Serenity was “leery” of going into the homes of COVID-19 patients while having families of their own to consider, Johnson said.

Setting an example helped to remedy that, she said.

“I did want to be an example,” Johnson said. “The main reason I did it was, whether they have COVID-19, cancer, COPD or whatever, they still deserve that level of care. That’s what Serenity stands for is that level of care no matter what they have. If they need us, we’re going to go.”

Johnson said receiving the award felt “phenomenal and overwhelming.” But, she said she doesn’t need the appreciation.

“I’m doing what I was born to do, and that’s being a nurse,” Johnson said. “This is what I do.”

The Ogle County Solid Waste Management Department (OCSWMD) will be hosting a paper shredding and latex paint recycling collection for Ogle County residents on Saturday, April 17, at the County Annex Building at 909 Pines Road in Oregon.

A variety of oak tree saplings will also be available, free of charge, provided by the Million Trees Project from Living Lands and Waters, in partnership with the OCSWMD. On-site paper shredding will be held from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. There will be a limit of three boxes of personal documents to be shredded. No business or institutional paper or documents.

This service is provided free of charge for Ogle County residents by the OCSWMD. Latex paint will be collected from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Liquid latex paint will be collected by Earthpaint for re-blending and re-use in community service projects such as Habitat for Humanity.

Spring household hazardous waste collection in Sterling The Illinois EPA iis offering Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection on May 1 in Sterling.

Illinois EPA HHW collections provide residents with free collection events to safely dispose of unused or leftover hazardous household products commonly found in homes.

As with past events, all Illinois EPA HHW collections are contactless for the safety of participants.

The Sterling event will be held at 202 Wallace Street Sterling and is being co-sponsored by the City of Sterling.

Each year, Illinois EPA coordinates with local municipalities to conduct oneday collections to provide no-cost public drop-offs for the disposal of household hazardous waste.

The first of these collections began in November 1989. Since then, over 401,350 households have participated.

Speaking, reading, and writing vocabularies follow

Our listening vocabularies develop from birth W

e all have listening, speaking, reading, and writing vocabularies. Our listening vocabularies are the first we build.

With the exception of hearing impaired children, this vocabulary develops from birth.

As discussed in last month’s column, it is built by having conversations with our children, singing and playing songs for them, and reading aloud to them.

Our listening vocabulary remains one of the strongest throughout our lives.

Next to develop is our speaking vocabulary.

Children learn to communicate their wants and needs pretty quickly and in a variety of ways.

As they grow, they communicate with words, phrases and sentences. The speaking vocabulary

is built by having conversations with others. It grows as the listening vocabulary continues to develop so we need to keep doing what we can to continue to build the listening vocabulary.

Our speaking vocabulary is much smaller than our listening vocabulary, even into adulthood.

Reading and writing vocabularies often develop at about the same time.

Children often learn to read and write their names and family words even before they go to Kindergarten.

Both of these vocabularies are built by reading and writing. Reading a lot and reading a wide variety of different kinds of text builds reading

vocabulary.

Writing vocabulary is built by writing a lot.

As we grow and read and write more, both of these vocabularies become stronger. Reading vocabulary almost always remains stronger than writing vocabulary, even as adults.

Some educators would add the additional vocabulary of new literacies to this list. Few would argue that the vocabulary and language around computer-related devices and resources is a vital part of the world today.

Often, this vocabulary is stronger for our children and grandchildren than for us. In that case, they can help us build our knowledge of this vocabulary!

All of these vocabularies are related to each other. Building in one area impacts all of the other areas.

We get better in each area by using that particular vocabulary.

So, keep talking to and reading and writing with your children and grandchildren and enjoy watching their vocabularies – all of them – grow!

Former park ranger, Grant Afflerbaugh of Oregon, will offer guided hikes through two Ogle County state parks. Each hike features a different state park with a trail that is often less traveled. Afflerbaugh will lead the group along with providing educational information throughout the hike. The group will meet at each park the day of the program.

The first hike is at Lowden Miller State Forest on Saturday, April 10 at 9 a.m.

The deadline to register is April 8.

Other planned hikes are: Friday, April 23, 6 p.m. Lowden Miller State Forest.

I

t was a beautiful day and I simply told myself that I needed to get out and do something constructive.

The more you hang in your house, the more you do not want to get out. In fact someone said the other day, “They entertained some of their family and it was almost more than they could handle!”

For a year they had huddled in their house with no one around, doing very little, and had almost forgotten how to be sociable again. I can understand school kids that have been isolated in their homes and almost facing depression over it. But that is another story.

So I headed to the library to tackle more research on the old Edgewood Golf Course west of Polo. I had stopped at 1918 and so I decided to start with 1919. But first I will refresh your memory of what went before.

An article in the March 4, 1938 newspaper of the Dixon Telegraph gave a brief history of the beginning of Edgewood Golf Course west of Polo.

In 1915, a group of Polo businessmen headed to Barber’s pasture to play a game of what they called golf.

Barber’s pasture had already been called Barber’s Park years before. In fact they had a race track, baseball diamond, and picnic area. So it had been treated has a park earlier. All that land was owned by the Barber family and probably would have been nice ground to start a golf course.

The men rented the ground at first for $5.00 and eventually had to pay $25 to be able to continue their game of golf.

The article also said they had moved an old church to be their club house. Others said it was the old Masonic Lodge that had been moved on to the property. That is what we said in the new Polo book.

I started looking to see what really went on and got only so far when the virus hit and ended my research.

So I started with 1919 at the library this week.

The Tri-County Press of May 8, 1919 started with the building plans of the new Masonic Temple.

The old one was on the corner of Mason and Franklin and they did not plan on erecting the new building on that same site. They did not own

the property.

The Masonic people had already owned a lot on North Franklin and that is where they had planned to put their new building. The citizens of Polo pleaded with them to put the new building back on the corner of Mason and Franklin in order to help Mason Street look a bit better.

Specifications had already been drawn up for the building to be built on Franklin Street but they changed their mind in view of public opin-

ion. Placing the new building back on the same lot where it had been previously would cost them twice as much money but citizens not belongings to the Masonic Organization came through with private funds.

The article then went on to say that demolition had begun on the building. I decided right then that the building was not going to the golf course until the next paper stated otherwise.

That paper, dated May 15, 1919, stated that the old Masonic Hall was headed to the golf links where it would be redone for a club house.

Members of the Edgewood Golf Course had already dug out for a basement and foundation to place the old Masonic Temple building on for a new look.

This was not the only building moved out to Barber’s Park according to the article. But more on that next week.

Oregon’s Third St. used to be main business district Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon has researched the people, places and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is one of a series of the articles he has written.

ack in the 1880s pitching horseshoes was a popular sport called Backyard Golf.

I have a photo taken sometime between 1889 and 1929 showing a crowd sitting on the curb of North Third Street watching two teams of old time business men, A. W. Spoor and John Matmiller staging a horseshoe pitching contest with James Malarkey and John Perrine.

The article stated: “The large gathering of spectators along the side lines would leave one to believe that these were some pumpkins when it came to horseshoe pitching.”

The first cemetery in this area is located on North Third Street. I remember horseshoe contests held behind the Church of God which was located south of the cemetery.

The home of Oregon’s first Doctor, Dr. Roe is located north of the cemetery which was called the burying grounds, now Riverside Cemetery.

At this time Third Street was the main business section of Oregon.

Oregon founder John Phelps ran a store in an old frame building which was located at the corner of Third and Monroe Streets.

This article stated Dr. Bunker bought a pair of extra fine buckskin gloves from John Phelps in the 1860s.

Businesses mentioned were a thirst parlor, residence of Thos. J. Goings, colored liveryman, John T. Bowler monument and marble manufacturer, Independent Democrat Newspaper Office, Pike Denier broom room, Oregon City building and the Ogle County Reporter Newspaper Office.

At this time there were three newspapers in Oregon.

The first small library was located above a pharmacy on South Third Street. South Third Street was also the location of several upscale homes in Oregon.

Oregon businesses, housing, railroad spur and manufacturing were all located within two blocks west of Rock River.

So the Rock River and the railroad were instrumental in the early development of Oregon. The Oregon dam supplied power for the early factories and later electricity for the

City of Oregon.

Two other important factors in our development was being named the county seat and Route 2 and Route 64 providing access to the North, East, West and South.

Manufacturing flourished along the siding spur located on the west side of Rock River.

In 1913 businesses adjacent to the railroad spur were the Pacific Coast Condensed Milk Co., Schiller Piano Co., Neola Grain Elevator, Ill. Northern Utilities Co., Player Piano Co., Sandage Foundry Co., E. F. Davis Lumber Co., Chester Nash Millwork, Riverside Creamery and Bottling Works, E.D. Etynyre and

Co., and Spahn & Rose Lumber Co. Having electrical power provided at the dam and the train spur running next to their plant spurred manufacturing. All of these industries have closed or moved to other locations and the railroad spur removed.

Later on this spur, horses were used to back Lowden’s private railroad car on the railroad spur up to Route 64 where he gave a speech from the back of the car campaigning for the office of Governor of Illinois.

When Gov. Ford was elected for Governor he lived on North Third Street.

Grungy Roots to open in Grand Detour April 10

bweidman@shawmedia.com When a person goes shopping at Grungy Roots in Grand Detour, the eyes of late rockers Kurt Cobain, Chris Cornell, Scott Weiland and Dennis Wilson will be gazing down at you.

Grungy Roots combines two passions of owner Ashley Ruch: grunge music and plants.

Wilson was a member of the Beach Boys who helped forge a love of music in Ruch, while Cobain, Cornell and Weiland were famous members of Nirvana, Soundgarden and Stone Temple Pilots, respectively.

Ruch plans to have an artist paint the east walls of the Grungy Roots building with murals of Cobain, Cornell and Weiland. That project is slated to begin Monday and it is hoped to be completed in time for the grand opening of the business Saturday, April 10.

“I am a die-hard grunger,” Ruch said. “I love grunge music. That is my root of everything. Then I developed this hobby of plants, and their roots are grungy. It just kind of fit together.”

A special education teacher at Thome School in Rock Falls for nearly 10 years, Ruch began thinking of opening her own plant business last spring.

She consulted with an uncle, Ken Lawler of Altoona, Iowa, who owns a garden center there, and decided to give it a go this spring.

Ruch and her husband, Kevin, have lived in Grand Detour since 2009, and the 1,700-square-foot building located at 8094 Illinois 2, provided just the spot she was looking for.

Large windows in the front bring in plenty of natural light.

Grungy Roots will specialize in hard-to-find potted plants, such as black velvet alocasia and different types of philodendrons.

There also are plants that require no soil, and are literally growing on a wall.

“I think I just got tired of not being able to find the plants on my list, so it was very important to me to open this store,” she said. “We specialize in rare plants, but we also have the most basic plants that you can find almost anywhere.”

“If people are just getting into this hobby, a lot of times they don’t have the right soil at home,” Ruch said.

“Who wants to go buy a bag of soil just for one plant? We offer a potyour-own-plant station so you buy a plant, buy a pot, and we’ll have the right soil for that plant, along with fertilizer and water.”

The Ruchs have a pond at their home where various plants thrive, and pond plants will be available.

Pots, named after Ruch’s late mother. People bring in an article of clothing from a loved one. It is dipped into a solution and formed into a pot.

“You would bring in a T-shirt, a pair of pants or anything you would like, and we custom-make these pots,” Ruch said. “Once they are cured, you pick out a plant, put it in there, and you’ll have it forever.”

Ruch plans to have perennials, herbs and annuals later this spring,

and she will do her best to either stock or locate whatever exotic plants her customers are seeking.

“We’re trying our best to find everything,” Ruch said. “Unfortunately, what I want people to understand right now is COVID messed with the production of things. Greenhouses around the world were shut down, so it’s a lot harder find certain plants, especially South American plants and African plants.”

Dixon’s Petunia Festival will be return this year, on a smaller scale with health guidelines in place.

The plan is to have a 3-day festival July 2-4 with live music, food, Family Fun Night, a parade and fireworks, dependent upon COVID-19 mitigations in place.

Social distancing and other safety protocols will be expected at all events.

Festival leadership has been working with the health department, police department and City Council on how to bring the signature event back to town while keeping safety precautions in place, Petunia Festival President Jennifer Bubrick said.

“It will be different than it has ever been, but we have to be conscious as a group for the community,” she said.

Internet is one way to stay connected with sports I

have been out of town this week and didn’t get a chance to keep up with local sports much, but appreciative for the Internet in keeping tabs on what is going on.

As a 62-year old who grew up without it, I am still amazed how it works and the wealth of information it presents.

I was reminded of the difference in generations reading a newspaper article about the death of 74-year old Tom Konchalski of New York, who devoted his life to an east coast high school basketball-recruiting service.

He did this for 55 years without a cell phone, computer or car. Reports were filed on a typewriter and mailed to college coaches, who paid him a yearly subscription fee.

After giving up his lifelong passion due to health reason in 2020, he finally put away his Swintec 1146 typewriter and was given a iPhone by a friend.

As he lay dying, even Tom admitted the Internet on his new-fangled phone was handy for staying connected to the world of sports.

Here’s another cool story fro the 70-year old age group and one that was featured on 60 Minutes a couple weeks ago.

Sportswriter Dave Kindred, who hails from the tiny berg of Atlanta, Illinois recently retired after an award-winning career covering events such as the Super Bowl, World Series and the Masters.

Coming back home to central Illinois, he decided to begin covering girls basketball for Morton.

Why would someone who used to hang out with Muhammad Ali and basked in the glory of sports at the highest level, become a simple beat reporter for a high-school team?

“I felt I owed something to Title IX,” Kindred said, in reference to the legislation that enabled girls to equal access to sports.

What a humble statement from someone who grew up in a generation that relegated girls to roles in cheerleading or pom poms.

I can remember when Title IX was enacted in the early 70s and instead of the subservient roles of cheering for the boys, the girls could begin playing.

On a quick side note, there still remains prejudices against women in sports, as evidenced by the disparity in training facilities for the college basketball tournament.

The NCAA was exposed for giving the men far greater workout areas than the women.

Getting back to Kindred, the other reason for diving into sports again was because it filled a void in his life, as family death and illness mount-

ed up. It was a type of spiritual release for him and one that provided mutual support.

The girls from Morton were ecstatic to have someone of Kindred’s stature interview them after games and provide expert analysis.

The online articles, filed on the team’s website immediately afterwards in deadline type fashion became must-read by the players and its supporters.

His payment? Each game, the coach would give him a box of milk duds.

According to Kindred, a much bigger rewards is the one he gets from being around the Morton Potters.

“This team saved me,” said Kindred, who lost a grandson and mother upon returning home, along with his wife suffering a debilitating stroke.

Folks like Tom Konchalski and Dave Kindred devoted their lives to sports. Konchalski, who never married, admitted that basketball had been his mistress.

Kindred wanted to be a sportswriter since high school in Atlanta. As a senior, he got a taste of how enticing sports can be playing on a 29-1 basketball squad that won an IHSA regional, a huge deal in a 1-class system.

But, what happens all those decades later when the last touchdown is over or the game-ending buzzer sounds?

The answer to that might make for an interesting column at another time.

kchlum@shawmedia.com A blocked field goal attempt shifted the momentum for the Oregon Hawks on April 2 in a Big Northern game with Mendota.

With the game tied and facing a fourth-and-goal from then 1-yard line, Mendota opted to kick a field goal just before the end of the first half.

But Oregon’s Adam Glendenning had other ideas. He blocked the attempt and Issac Reber scooped up the ball and raced 95 yards for a touchdown.

“We all just got so much more motivated after that,” Oregon’s Wylee Rice said. “The hype was through the roof. It brought so much more confidence going into the second half.”

The Trojans, on the other hand, missed a chance to grab the lead and get the ball back to start the second half.

“We had a chance to take the lead and that’s what we wanted to do,” MHS coach Keegan Hill said. “We didn’t execute in that situation We have to coach the situation better.

Ideally, we get the ball in before we get to that scenario.”

The Hawks rode the momentum into the third quarter to build a three-score lead before hanging on for a 30-26 victory.

“We had our ups and downs,” Rice said. “Toward the end of the game, we had some fundamental mistakes, but we took it home. We got it.”

Up 14-6 to start the second half, the Hawks recovered a fumble on Mendota’s second play and cashed in with a 12-yard touchdown run by quarterback Breccan Berns to put the Hawks up 22-6.

The Trojans responded with a

5-yard TD pass from Ted Landgraf to Andres Castaneda but a failed two-point conversion left MHS down 22-12.

Mendota appeared poised to recapture the momentum when Parker Guelde bounced on an Oregon fumble in Oregon territory.

However, after initially ruling it was MHS ball, the referees said there was an inadvertent whistle

and replayed the down.

The Hawks capitalized when Rice broke several tackles en route to a 31-yard touchdown run for a 30-12 lead with 9:46 left.

“We had the chance to get the ball back and there was an inadvertent whistle,” Hill said. “(Nine) plays later, they break one on third down.

The highs and lows of turnovers can affect you. We have to do a better job of moving on to the next play.”

The Trojans turned to their passing game to rally.

Mendota struck quickly when Landgraf hooked up with Castaneda for a 21-yard score with 7:50 left.

After the Hawks ate up more than six minutes on a 12-play drive that ended on a fourth down interception

by Anthony Childs, MHS took over at its own 20 with 1:18 left.

Behind Landgraf’s arm and a roughing the passer penalty, Mendota had third-and-goal from the 4.

Landgraf took the snap, handed the ball to Uzi Angulo who flipped it to Magallanes coming the other way. Magallanes stopped and threw it to Landgraf for a 4-yard TD pass with 7.1 seconds left.

“It was being willing to open it up and let our quarterback make some decisions and throw the ball,” Hill said. “He made some nice choices with that. Being able to go at a faster

Lady Hawks battle Duchesses in 3 to win match

eingles@shawmedia.com Momentum swung back and forth multiple times in Monday’s Big Northern Conference volleyball match in Lancaster Gym in Dixon.

Both the Dixon Duchesses and Oregon Hawks seemed to be on the verge of taking control for good at various points throughout the night.

Eventually, it was Oregon coming through with one last surge for the last six points of the third set, grabbing a 25-20, 22-25, 25-21 win.

The Duchesses were four points from closing things out after Elena Castillo-Wetzell served an ace and an Oregon hit went out to put Dixon up 21-19 in the decisive third set.

Oregon (8-1, 6-1 BNC) had one last surge in it. Ella Martin tipped two of the next three points, then won a 50/50 ball at the net. In the meantime, the Hawks got an ace from Olivia Ankney. Jenae Bothe came up with a block to put the Hawks on the brink of a win, and Bothe then blocked Addyson Kinn at the net for the final point.

Martin had 12 kills, doing a lot of that damage through tipping.

“I really try to see what’s going on on the other side of the net,” she said. “As the setter taking the sec-

Oregon got back-t0-back kills from Jenae Bothe and a kill from Jadyn Bothe to go back in front 12-9, but a kill from Mallory Coley was followed by back-to-back aces from Natalie Davidson, a sophomore just called up to the Duchesses varsity squad.

Davidson also had a pair of kills in a three-point span in the second set.

“Serving is always key for us because we want to keep the other team off of their offensive sets,” Dixon coach Bunyan Cocar said. “.... We try to focus on getting spots with our serve to keep them out of system, and we did that somewhat, but every once in a while they would get in system and hit the ball.”

The teams traded the lead back and forth for much of the third set.

An Oregon hit out put Dixon in front 13-12 before the Bothe sisters each came up with a kill to put the Hawks in front. An Oregon service error and a Hawks’ hit into the net put Dixon back in front and a Samantha Tourtillott kill extended that lead to 16-14 before Martin came through with a tip and Brenna Noon slammed down an overpass. Aubrey Point added an ace and soon the Hawks were in front18-16.

Dixon (2-6, 2-3 BNC) then claimed five of the next six points, benefitting from three Hawks miscues, but also getting a kill from Anna Whelan and an ace from Castillo-Wetzell.

But that was the last surge Dixon had for the night, and Oregon was able to rally for the win.

Rice finished with 129 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries, while Berns ran for 103 yards and a pair of TDs, including a 1-yarder to cap Oregon’s 13-play, 7:26 opening drive.

“I thought it was a pretty darn good game between hard nosed programs,” said Schneiderman, whose team rushed for 296 yards on 46 attempts. “I thought we came out and started the game off real well, but again, we’re having mental mistakes. We keep having these hiccups and we have to cut those out.”

For Mendota (0-2), Landgraf threw for 155 yards and a pair of TDs, ran for 39 yards and a score – to cap Mendota’s 17-play, 8:46 opening drive – and caught a TD pass.

“We had a lot of errors coming out, so our focus was just on our side to minimize our errors,” Oregon coach Farrell Cain said.

“I will say that they’re a really scrappy team and they were going for everything, so we had to change up our mindset in terms of what was open and ever changing our strategy on our side.”

Oregon jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first set only to have Dixon rally back, pulling even at 10-10 on an ace from Kinn. It was also tied 11-11, 12-12, 16-16 and 17-17 before Oregon started to take control.

Dixon hit back-to-back balls into the net and Ankney followed that with an ace to make it 20-17. Dixon got back within one at 21-20 before Oregon took the final four points of the set.

Oregon also jumped out to an early lead in the second set and led 12-6 after Noon took care of an overpass.

But Dixon bounced back, getting a kill and a block from Ella Govig followed by a kill from Coley to tie the score at 13-13.

Dixon pulled ahead thanks to a pair of aces from Davidson along with a block from Whelan and a Peyton Book tip, making it 20-16.

“We just had to keep grinding, keep doing what we needed to do in terms of finding our hitters,” Cocar said.

Oregon got back within a point, with Ava Wight getting a pair of kills in a three-point span, and briefly took a lead, but Dixon took the final four points of the set on a kill from Whelan, an Oregon hit into the net and back-to-back aces from Castillo-Wetzell.

“I think serve-receive is always kind of a struggle,” Cain said. “In practice you see same servers, so in the game you see different servers and establishing a pattern between servers and adjusting on serve-receive, I think just recognizing that sooner to make those adjustments will be helpful.”

Coley had seven kills and 19 digs for the Duchesses with Kinn adding 11 assists and eight digs. Whelan had four kills. Castillo-Wetzell had 23 digs and Davidson had four aces.

Oregon got 11 digs each from Lyndi Kenney and Point. Jadyn Bothe had eight kills. Jenae Bothe had nine kills. Wight had 18 digs and five kills.

Martin said that from her hitters, she was seeing “a lot of aggression, which is always good. They were playing smart and definitely had the mental toughness we needed to push us through to the win.”

Forreston bounces back to beat Amboy-LaMoille

ccutter@saukvalley.com When it comes to the Forreston’s abundant offense, the Cardinals aren’t balanced in the way they push the football down the field – the three-time state champions just run, run and run.

Balance, though, was what the Cardinals did best on April 2 in utilizing eight ballcarriers in the first half to throw Amboy-LaMoille off-balance, as the Cardinals beat the Clippers 38-6 at The Harbor.

Not only did the Cardinals’ wide array of offensive weapons make it difficult for the Clippers to defend, but the way the Cardinals triggered their plays kept the Clippers guessing – quite the quick trigger, indeed.

Usually no longer than 7 or 8 seconds after most of the Cardinals’ short-yard plays were downed, the line of scrimmage was rampant with movement once again.

Matthew Beltran, the fourth Cardinal to touch the ball in the game, gave Forreston (1-1, 1-1 NUIC South) its first score with a 10-yard run through the middle, and Devonte King-Black’s 2-point run put the Cardinals up 8-0.

Jordan Neuschwander, the second Cardinal to carry the ball in the game, later scored Forreston’s second touchdown on a 3-yard breakthrough for a 16-0 lead after Noah Johnson’s 2-point run.

Forreston outgained Amboy 24691 in the first half, and amassed 14 first downs in the process – a far cry from a slow start in last week’s loss to Milledgevile.

“It felt great, and it was about time we get this win,” Neuschwander said. “I felt like we should have won last week, but this feels so great

than 3 minutes later, Neuschwander added his third score with a 13-yard sweep around right end and a 32-0 lead after Johnson’s second conversion run.

Ashton Schramm capped the Cardinals’ scoring on an 11-yard run run with 9 minutes to play in the game.

“Our energy was a little bit low in the first half, but I felt we came out in the second half with everything clicking,” Neuschwander said. “This gives us real good energy going forward. As long as we can keep this rolling – keep this train rolling – it will be so good.”

Amboy’s first score came with just 7 seconds left in the third quarter.

Clippers quarterback Lane Boehle dove in for a 1-yard plunge after he, Sean Fitzpatrick and Joe Quest each pushed forward for 1-yard gains in successive plays.

“We had a pretty good first half,” Amboy coach Scott Payne said. “We were only down 16-0, then Forreston came out in the second half and took control of the line of scrimmage.

When you go against a team like Forreston, they only run about six plays at you and you’ve got to be able to control the line of scrimmage to stop them.”

Fitzpatrick was the main go-to ballcarrier for the Clippers, rushing for 120 yards on 27 runs; Quest added 36 yards on 15 rushes.

“Sean Fitzpatrick and Joe Quest both ran the football pretty well for us,” Payne said. “Our line in the first half played pretty good, we just got bogged down in the red zone a couple of times, so there were some positives.”

The game’s entire offense yardage total came on the ground; all nine pass attempts failed.

MT. MORRIS – Roberta J. Christians, 85, passed away in her home on Saturday, March 27, 2021 in Mt. Morris, with her family by her side.

Roberta was born on July 13, 1935 in Oregon, the daughter of Robert and Violet (Shindle) Murdock.

Roberta graduated from Oregon High School, class of 1953.

She attended University of Illinois and was a member of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority, and she received her bachelor and master’s degrees from Northern Illinois University.

Roberta married Daryl Christians on Oct. 14, 1972 in Mt. Morris, and he preceded her in death on July 11, 2019.

She enjoyed golfing, fishing, traveling and dancing with Daryl and raising their beautiful daughters together.

Ed is survived by his wife for 70 years, Marian Schnulle; daughters, Marilyn (Don) Nelson of Polo, Marcia (Joe) Flessner of Amboy, and Marlys (Robert) Carpenter of Milledgeville; sister, Harriet Dambman of Milledgeville; 10 grandchildren, Ryan (Robyn) Nelson, Renee (Mark) Boyle, Lori (Josh) Christen, Kimberly (Nick) Mumm, Kayla (BJ) Payne, Kelly (Gage) Borchelt, Derek (Katie) Flessner, Bridget (John) Newcomer, Steven (Samantha) Blake, and Ralph Carpenter; and 15 great-grandchildren, Natalie, Logan, Samantha, Kendall, Lexi, Jeremiah, Laney, Gage, Abel, Blake, Teddy, Emma, Beau, Aspen, and Easton.

Ed is preceded in death by his parents.

Private family funeral services are being held in St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Polo, with Pastor Terrie Wilder officiating.

Burial will be held in Oakwood Cemetery, Mt. Morris.

ACCIDENT

No injuries in rollover on April 1 An Oregon man refused medical treatment after a single vehicle rollover on Illinois 2 on April 1.

At approximately 1:16 p.m. deputies, along with the Oregon Fire, EMS and the Illinois Conservation Police responded to a single vehicle rollover accident in the 2,800 block of South Illinois Route 2.

After an investigation it was learned that Leo R. Dempewolf, 29, of Oregon, lost control of his vehicle after swerving to miss an oncoming vehicle in his lane. Dempewolf’s vehicle overturned and came to rest in the grass.

Dempewolf was issued a citation Earleen Hinton/Shaw Media for operating an uninsured motor vehicle. His vehicle was removed An Oregon man refused treatment after his truck left Illinois 2 and rolled over near the main entrance of Castle Rock State Park south from the location by John T. towing. of Oregon on April 1.

SHERIFF ACTIVITY Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle reports the following police activity.

March 30 Willie Barr, 62, of Byron was arrested at 10:55 p.m. for aggravated domestic battery (strangulation) and domestic battery after deputies responded to an address in the 5,000 block of East Scott Drive in reference to a domestic disturbance. Barr was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held without bond.

Michael Dixon, 21, of Davis Junction was arrested at 11:30 p.m. for domestic battery after deputies responded to an address on Golden Prairie Drive in Davis Junction for a domestic disturbance.

Dixon was confined at the Ogle County Jail in lieu of bond.

Mark Rowe, 35, of Justice, Illinois was arrested at 3:09 p.m. for domestic battery, possession of a controlled substance (heroin) under 15 grams, reckless conduct and a valid Ogle County failure to appear warrant after deputies were dispatched to the parking lot of 4225 West Illinois 64 in reference to a domestic battery.

Upon arrival, deputies learned the domestic battery took place in a vehicle while the occupants were driving

on Illinois 64. Also arrested was Jenna Jewell, 32, of Justice, for driving while license suspended and possession of a controlled substance (heroin) under 15 grams.

Both Rowe and Jewell were transported to the Ogle County Jail where they were held in lieu of bond.

Gudino was also cited for operating an uninsured motor vehicle and one headlight. Gudino was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

Orrie Samp, 50, of Rochelle was arrested at 9:45 p.m. for battery after deputies responded to the 200 block of Powers Road in Hillcrest for the report of a physical altercation between two males. Samp was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

Aric Casey, 36, of Oregon was arrested at 3:41 p.m. for violation of order of protection after deputies were dispatched to an address in rural Oregon for a violation of order of protection.

After an investigation, it was determined Casey had violated the order of protection by going to a protected address that was listed on the order. Casey was taken into custody and transported to the Ogle County jail and held without bond.

April 2 Olivia Lange, 18, of Dubuque, Iowa

Anthony Apodaca, 40, of Leaf River was arrested at 4:01 p.m. for violation of an order of protection after deputies responded to a 911 hang up in the apartment complex in the 500 block of East 3rd Street in Leaf River. After investigation, deputies learned the call was made from 510 East 3rd St., which involved a domestic dispute. Apodaca was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

April 3 Christina Princivalli, 44, of Rochelle was arrested at 5:45 p.m. for domestic battery after deputies responded to the

11,000 block of East Sunset Lane in rural Rochelle for the report of a domestic disturbance. Princivalli was transported to the Ogle County Judicial Center where she was held awaiting a court appearance.

Braden A. Eich, 32, of Dixon was arrested at 6:27 p.m. for driving while under the influence of alcohol and violation of the Illinois concealed carry act after deputies attempted to conduct a traffic stop near the intersection of Mason Street and Division Avenue in Polo on a Harley Davidson motorcycle.

The motorcycle fled from deputies northbound on Division Avenue. The motorcycle failed to negotiate the curve in the 1,000 block of South Illinois 26 and entered the east ditch where it crashed.

Polo Fire/EMS were dispatched to the scene for non-life threatening injuries.

Eich was transported to KSB Hospital by Polo EMS. Eich was also issued citations for operating an uninsured motor vehicle, failure to reduce speed to prevent an accident, speeding 35+ miles per hour over the limit and driving the wrong way on a one-way street.

Reminder to all motorists: Drop the phone and drive

April is distracted driving awareness month across the nation and the Ogle County Sheriff’s Office is urging drivers to drop their phones and focus on the road with a not-so-subtle reminder: “phone in one hand. ticket in the other.”

“It has become all too common to see people driving down the road while looking at their phones,” Sheriff Brian VanVickle said. “People know texting and driving is both dangerous and illegal, but they do it anyway, putting themselves and others at risk. During April, you will see increased law enforcement efforts as officers stop and ticket anyone who violates distracted driving and other Illinois motor vehicle laws.”

In support of this effort, the Ogle County Sheriff’s Office is partnering with the Illinois Department of Transporta-

tion, the Illinois State Police and more than 200 local law enforcement agencies around Illinois the entire month of April.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a total of 26,004 people died in U.S. crashes involving a distracted driver between 2012 and 2019.

The distracted driving campaign is administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation with federal traffic safety funds.

Levi S. Townsell, 35, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, was charged with speeding - 100 mph in a 70 mph zone and driving while license suspended. Townsell was

released on a recognizance bond and issued a future court date.

Peak, 41, of Rockford was arrested at 12:56 a.m. on an active Rockford arrest warrant for larceny after deputies conducted a vehicle check on a vehicle parked on the shoulder in the 5,000 block of North Illinois 2. Peak was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Ogle County Jail where she was held in lieu of bond.

March 30 Nancy J. Graham, 59, of Oregon, was issued a city citation at 2:15 p.m. for violating the city code for allowing a dog to run at large. This violation occurred in the 900 block of Jefferson Street.

At 8:21 p.m., police conducted a traffic stop resulting in issuing Callie A. Boyer,22, of Oregon, a citation for unlawful container/possession of cannabis as a driver and Emma L. Moyers, 22, of Oregon, a citation for unlawful possession of cannabis as a passenger. A 16-year-old female passenger of Oregon was issued a civil citation for possession of cannabis not more than 10 grams.

These violations occurred in the 400 block of Adams Street.

March 31 Brandon J. Imel, 27, of Polo, was issued a citation at 11:12 p.m. for unlawful possession of cannabis as a driver.

This violation occurred in the 100 block of E. Washington Street.

April 3 At 12:31 p.m., police responded to the 500 block of S. 8th Street for a two-vehicle traffic crash where a 2013 Subaru driven by Donald E. Johnson, 81, of Mt. Morris, struck a parked 2015 Chrysler owned by Cynthia D. Mundell, 49, of Ashton. No citations were issued.

Angela S. Rienstra, 44, of Polo, was arrested at 8:45 p.m. on an outstanding Lee County warrant for failure to appear for contempt of court charge. Rienstra was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Robert T. Wilson, 23, of Oregon, was issued a citation at 9:05 p.m. for speeding, 46 mph in a 30 mph zone. This violation occurred in the 700 block of N. 4th Street.

April 4 David B. Hogan, 61, of Janesville, Wisconsin, was arrested at 5:35 p.m. for driving while license revoked. Hogan was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

This violation occurred at the intersection of 4th and Washington Streets.

One parking ticket and seven verbal warnings issued March 29-April 4.
