Polo Scouts learn about fingerprinting On Feb. 20 and March 6, local Boy Scouts from Troop 337 in Polo and Troop 72 in Sterling learned a great deal about the science and application of fingerprinting while working on Fingerprinting merit badge.

Polo Police Chief Tim Rockwood, and Keith Chestnut, of the Illinois State Police, led the sessions at the Polo Police Station.

Topics covered included the history of

fingerprinting, the difference between civil and criminal identification as well as the differences between AFIS (automated fingerprint identification systems (AFIS) and biometric systems.

The boys also identified the basic principles supporting the science of fingerprinting and the body surfaces where friction (papillary ridges) are found.

Each boy also took a clear set of prints of a fellow scout and showed they could

identify their own fingerprint patterns noting either, arches, whorls or loops or a combination thereof.

And finally, Rockwood and Chestnut instructed the boys on lifting latent fingerprints which are “invisible” prints left by traces of sweat or oil on surfaces by using dusting techniques.

The boys then participated in a “who done it” exercise by studying latent fingerprints to identify the culprit.

This week, I return to student teaching in Rockford. I have missed the students and teaching. Now that spring break is over, I only have about six weeks left.

It always amazes me how fast the time moves.

Each week, we get closer to a time when we can be together without restrictions. This has been a difficult year, but we know that God will continue to see us through. Together, we can continue to pray for those still suffering, those who are vaccinated, and for those who wait.

Waiting can be difficult. For the most part, I can easily wait for the good that is to come. There are times when it is difficult. Even though I trust God, I get impatient waiting for things to come.

After two and a half years, my time in school is coming to an end. The next step is to find a place to teach. The process of filling out applications, waiting for interviews, and waiting for decisions can be scary.

I sometimes need reminders that God

is in control. I have faced this situation before. A little more than ten years ago, I prayed that I would find any job. I was hired at a bank where I met great friends.

In the moments that I was ready to give up, God would provide the answer.

I know He will do that this time, too. For my part, I will keep filling out applications and sending out resumes. That’s what partners do. We work together.

I know that God expects me to do my part. We know that we can take a chance because God is in the details. I can wait for the result because I know that God is there. And if I make the wrong decision, He will be there to help me find a new way.

Following God takes practice, patience, and courage. We are learning to trust God. He is always there for us as we navigate our way through this life.

He is a partner and guide through this journey on earth.

I hope to see you this Sunday when we celebrate Easter Sunday. Come and join us for a time of worship and praise. Our church family gladly welcomes you and your family to our little church in the country.

BY KAREN MERLAK The month of March has come and gone as quickly as a sigh. It feels good to breathe in the fresh air of spring. God’s creation is waking from its long winter sleep. It seems even nature knows to celebrate this Palm Sunday. For all God’s gifts, we are truly thankful.

This morning in church, we were greeted by Martha Johanssen. Vicki Hay handed out the palms for the occasion.

Pastor Charlotte Hoppe gave the message for the morning. Charlotte also shares a midweek message on our Facebook page.

This past Saturday, I joined Deb Ohlwine, Sandra Ford, and Brian Toms while we decorated the church. After working, we enjoyed a short visit with each other. I have missed those relaxed visits with good friends.

On Saturday night, my brother Ben Bittinger, his wife, Jo, and their son, Garrett, joined Clint and I for dinner out in Clinton, Iowa. We enjoyed a nice dinner and visit before Clint leaves for his next assignment.

This past week was my spring break from student teaching. Clint and I spent

Discovery not yet fully complete

jhelfrich@shawmedia.com The double-murder trial of a Stillman Valley man accused of murdering his ex-wife and 3-year-old son was continued again in Ogle County court on March 26.

Duane Meyer, 38, is charged with four counts of first degree homicide, two counts of aggravated arson and one count of concealment of a homicidal death in connection with an Oct. 9, 2016 house fire in which Maggie and Amos Meyer were killed.

Maggie, 31, was his ex-wife and Amos was his son. Maggie was found dead on a couch on the first floor of her burning home and Amos was pronounced dead a short time later at Rockford Memorial Hospital.

The continuance on Friday was agreed to by both parties and a new

pre-trial conference is now set for May 21 at 2 p.m. Attorneys said the continuance will allow time to make sure discovery is complete.

Assistant Ogle County State’s Attorney Matthew Leisten was present in court along with Meyer’s attorney, Christopher DeRango, of Rockford. Attorney Patrick Moore of DeRango’s office was also present

for Meyer.

Meyer appeared in-person in court for the first time in months. The new Ogle County Jail has since opened and now has an easier connection to the courtrooms. Meyer is currently being held in the Ogle County Jail on a $10 million bond.

Attorneys said “significant progress” has been made on discovery

since the last pretrial hearing. Items now in hand mentioned Friday included two subpoenas from the Ogle County Sheriff’s Office and the Illinois State Police, a photograph of a red pickup truck, a new lab report, crime scene photographs, four videos from Casey’s General Store and four additional civilian interviews.

“Additionally, we did tell Mr. DeRango we will be working on additional discovery regarding an interview done at the Ogle County Jail,” Leisten said. “We’ll be working on that as soon as we can during the upcoming weekend.”

“I acknowledge receipt of the documents Mr. Leisten tendered to the clerk now,” DeRango said. “His office and my office have looked at these things with a microscope and it’s clear there were things that should’ve been tendered that were not. Mr. Leisten is making sure these gaps get filled.”

DeRango said going through recently-received discovery will take “some time,” which led to the decision of a May date.

$10.8M in renovations planned for Polo schools

jhelfrich@shawmedia.com Polo School District Superintendent Kelly Mandrell has announced plans for “significant” remodeling projects at all three school buildings.

In a letter to families last week, Mandrell said the maximum cost of the changes is $10.8 million. The remodeling will be financed through a bond and will not increase taxes.

“If you see an increase in your taxes, it is the ‘normal’ increase that is consistent with years past,” Mandrell said. “In completing these improvements, we were able to obtain a lower interest rate, as well as preserve the building’s physical space for years to come.

GRP/Wegman will be handling the construction on the buildings.

At Centennial Elementary School new windows will be put into older parts of the building along with new wiring. New HVAC units will be installed and the entire building will have air conditioning.

Three of the bathrooms will be remodeled and a gender-neutral bathroom will be added. All lockers will be replaced along with older

All the exterior doors and windows will be replaced at Polo Community High School. sinks and cabinets. All the ceilings in the 1956 part of the building will be changed to a drop ceiling and the flooring in the Pre-2000 areas will be replaced with tile and carpeting to match the 2000 wing.

Classroom doors will also be replaced in the 1956 wing as well.

A sound system will be added to the gymnasium, as well as master clocks throughout the building, and a public announcement system.

At Aplington Middle School all

windows, the roof and iFiber will be replaced along with all hallway lockers and the flooring in the library and the classroom connected to it.

Sidewalk and curbs will be replaced.

All the master clocks and the public announcement system in the building will be replaced, including the addition of a sound system in the gym. The lighting in the gym, as well as all the classrooms, are being replaced with LED lighting much like Centennial to ensure energy

efficiency.

At Polo Community High School windows and exterior doors will be replaced and wiring to support the new HVAC system will be upgraded.

Air conditioning and heating will be provided to the entire building.

The entire kitchen and cafeteria will be renovated and a wall in the cafeteria will be removed to ease the flow of student traffic. The room will be utilized as a common space. An outdoor patio will be added.

The science labs will be renovated, including the addition of new tables, cabinetry, an eye washing/ shower station, and new flooring.

The home economics room will undergo upgrades with new cabinetry and flooring. Restrooms near the ag shop will be renovated to become family/gender neutral.

“Each of these different items has an impact on the learning experience and safety, as well as the efficiency of the buildings,” Mandrell said. “To provide the best education for our students, we must ensure that our buildings are updated and are conducive to the learning process.”

An open house will be held in the fall following renovations.

Carpenter attended the Art Institute in Chicago

Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon has researched the people, places and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is one of a series of the articles he has written.

BY OTTO DICK Alice Andrew Carpenter was born Aug. 30, 1881 in Pine Rock Township.

She was the daughter of Daniel and Mary Slagle Andrew and married Benjamin Carpenter, Dec 1, 1911.

She was age 70 when she died Sept. 5, 1971.

Alice attended the Art Institute in Chicago for five years. I have a booklet titled as The Art Institute Of Chicago located on the Lake Front opposite Adams Street. The Art Institute departments were drawing, painting, sculpture, architecture, design and school art instruction. This booklet also contained the students for 1909 and 1910.

Alice Andrew is listed under the Category of Life Class. 373 students were listed as full time students in Life Classes.

In this booklet are several charcoal and ink portrait paintings by students. One of these is a charcoal portrait of a young lady by Alice Andrew.

Hanging on the dining room wall at the Ogle County Historical Society is a painting of the Stone Church located by the Riverside Cemetery on North 3rd Street by painted Alice Andrew Carpenter.

The Art Institute of Chicago was founded in 1879. In 1893 the Art Institute moved to its present location at 111 South Michigan Avenue.

The 1893 building was constructed for the World’s Columbian Exposition. The collection today is around 300,000 pieces.

Alice Andrew Carpenter has an interesting family history. Her grandfather was Nicholas Andrew born 1818 in Brome County, New

York. He married Margaret Ann Eyster in 1841.

The following year they moved to Ogle County. They stayed the first winter at the home of Mrs. John Campbell, whose husband had been killed by the Driscoll Gang.

This old unoccupied Campbell house still stands with a stone marking the spot where her husband was killed. In 1845 Nicholas rode his horse to the Dixon Land Office and

purchased land west of Rocky Hollow located near what would later be Paynes Point.

The year after Nicholas and Margaret came west her parents moved to Ogle County and purchased adjoining land to the west.

Alice’s parents were Daniel and Mary Slagle Andrew who purchased the Andrew farm. Daniel also purchased adjoining acreage increasing the Andrew farm to 172.59 acres.

Daniel and Mary C. had two children Alice (later Carpenter)and Charles. Charles graduated from the University of Illinois with an engineering degree and Alice received an associate’s degree from the Art Institute of Chicago.

Alice traveled to the Chana Train Station to catch the train to Chicago each day while attending the Art Institute Of Chicago. (in a horse drawn carriage). After attending classes at the Art Institute she married Ben Carpenter and lived at the Andrew Farm then called Maplewood Farm.

So it’s interesting to me that Alice was born on a farm in 1881, purchased by her grandfather then later her father purchased the farm. The two siblings Alice and her brother Charles both received advanced schooling after graduation from Oregon High School.

Her brother Charles was a noted bridge builder on the west coast.

Alice stayed in the Oregon area and taught art classes at Oregon Bible College.

Investigation into fatal Mt. Morris fire ongoing

Origin of fire and the cause of death under investigation

jhelfrich@shawmedia.com Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle said Tuesday that the investigation continues into the fire that took the lives of a 27-year-old Mt. Morris woman and her unborn son late last year.

Melissa Lamesch was found on the kitchen floor in her single-story

home at 206 S. Hannah Avenue in Mt. Morris on Nov. 25, 2020 after the Ogle County 911 center received multiple calls at 4:29 p.m. for smoke coming from the residence. Firefighters found heavy smoke and heat as they entered the structure.

Life-saving measures were attempted on Lamesch, but she was pronounced deceased at the scene.

“We don’t have any additional information right now,” VanVickle said. “The investigation is still ongoing. It’s still pending. The case is under investigation for the origin of the fire and the cause of death.”

VanVickle said investigators have been communicating with Lamesch’s family during the inves-

tigation. The Mt. Morris Police, State Fire Marshal and Ogle County Coroner’s Office are also involved in the investigation.

Ogle County Coroner Lou Finch said near the end of the year that more extensive information was asked for in the toxicology report and autopsy of Lamesch. VanVickle declined to reveal where those details of the investigation stood on Tuesday.

Lamesch’s son was due three days after the fire. She worked as an EMT since June 2016 and was working for Trace Ambulance in Tinley Park.

Lamesch graduated from Oregon High School in 2011.

Autopsy still not back in Nathaniel Burton case

jhelfrich@shawmedia.com Oregon Police Chief Shawn Melville said Tuesday that the full autopsy report of a 7-year-old Oregon boy who was found unresponsive in his bed Feb. 17 is still not back.

Nathaniel Burton, son of Bryan E. and Sarah L. (Safranek) Burton, was pronounced deceased after the police offices responded to a 2:35 a.m. 911 call for a seven-year-old who was not breathing at 403 South 10th Street.

After CPR attempts, Nathaniel was transported to KSB Hospital in Dixon where he was later pronounced dead.

No arrests have been made, and the investigation into what officials

Melville said Tuesday he hopes to have the report ‘within a day or two.’

“We had to have Nathaniel additional testing Burton done due to some things we uncovered during investigation,” Melville said.

“That’s why it’s taking longer. I hope to be able to explain that better soon.”

The Oregon Police Department is the lead agency on the investigation and Melville said he’s been working with the Lee County Coroner’s office and the Ogle County State’s Attor-

ney.

Melville said his hope is that after the report, further information will come out “quickly,” but that will be up to State’s Attorney Mike Rock, he said.

Melville declined to say what the additional testing was in reference to. The investigation work into Nathaniel’s death is nearly complete.

“I would say we’ve done most of what we can with the investigation,” Melville said. “A couple of things are still left to do, there’s a couple of in-person interviews. We’re waiting on some evidence from the crime lab. As far as what we have to do, we’re close to the end.”

Oregon Police have had experiences in the past responding to calls at

the home where Burton was found deceased, Melville said.

“We’ve had experiences in the past with the family,” Melville said.

“Numerous calls to the residence.

I don’t want to say what they’re in reference to because a lot of it is juvenile and medical information.”

Melville said he understands the public’s desire to know more about the case, but he wants to make sure his office is thorough in the investigation.

“We do feel some pressure to get this done, but we know we have to do the right things,” Melville said.

“We can’t rush to judgement and we have to be thorough and cover every possible angle. The public will understand that in the end.”

The clinic is open to any person in Phase 1A, 1B and 1B+ who lives or works in Ogle County.

The Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine will be given at the clinic.

“As for our regular clinics, we will be opening up to all Ogle County residents or employees 18+ mid-April, but will first schedule those on our waiting list from Phase 1A, 1B and 1B+,” an OCHD press release said.

The clinic, where 1,200 doses will be administered, is located at the Byron Middle School Gymnasium at 850 N. Colfax St. in Byron.

Signups were done online for the event.

Two more Johnson & Johnson clinics will take place at the OCHD’s Oregon office at 907 Pines Road on April 5 and 6. The clinics will open to any person over 18 who lives or works in Ogle County.

If you register and are not resident or employed in the county, your appointment will be canceled.

OCHD Public Administrator Kyle Auman said

the past few days have been a whirlwind for his department.

“The OCHD has been inundated by new COVID19 cases, appointment phone calls and working to plan several different vaccination events for the upcoming weeks,” Auman said. “We have been working vigorously to meet the many demands placed on the department.”

Auman said the OCHD has been fielding several “troubling and concerning” phone calls related to scheduling appointments for upcoming events and chose not to release the Byron location until the state finished programming the appointments with scheduling software.

“We are working closely with [the Illinois Department of Public Health], the Illinois National Guard, the Illinois Emergency Management Agency, and other local agencies to complete this mission.”

Auman said he doesn’t know how the 1,200 doses were assigned to the county by the IDPH. The doses are in addition to each department’s usual

allotment that week.

The clinics like Ogle County’s are in response to increasing cases of COVID-19 in the Region 1 counties of Carroll, Lee, Ogle and Whiteside. The state is sending rapid response vaccination teams to the Sauk Valley.

The Illinois Department of Public Health has seen vaccine demand slow in several counties throughout the state, with early signs of unfilled appointments and increased vaccine inventory.

IDPH is authorizing those communities to begin vaccinating all residents 16 and older at their immediate discretion, in order to use the vaccine doses they currently have available.

“Recent increases in hospital admissions and test positivity are concerning new developments and we don’t want to go down the same path we’ve seen before and experience a resurgence in the pandemic, which is why Gov. Pritzker directed us to use all our resources to halt these upticks,” IDPH Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike said in a news release.

“We cannot move forward if our metrics are going backward. The vaccine will help get us to the end of the pandemic, but we need to continue to reduce spread of the virus by wearing a mask, avoiding large crowds, keeping six feet of distance, getting tested after seeing others, and getting vaccinated as soon as possible.”

The federal government is projecting that Illinois will receive nearly 1 million doses this week for distribution, an all-time high. These doses are on top of the allocation to the local health departments, the release said.

Doug Knapp, Randy Schoon vie for office of Polo mayor

jhelfrich@shawmedia.com The April 6 consolidated election will see twoterm Polo Mayor Doug Knapp seek re-election against Ward 3 Alderman Randy Schoon.

Knapp, in his eighth year as Polo’s mayor, said he chose to run for reelection for several reasons.

He wants to see the city’s storm sewer project through to the end and finish the new handicap bathrooms and concession stand at the city’s pool.

The city’s desire to replace its city hall is also near the top of his list.

“It’s about finishing things I started,” Knapp said. “As far as new things, I want to work with economic development to get a TIF extension to generate funds for an addition to a subdivision.

I want people to come to Polo and fill the schools up. We could put 100 more kids in and not hire anyone.”

Schoon said he chose to run for mayor because he believes it’s time for change and new leadership.

The current Ward 3 Alderman has served on the city council for 10 years and wants to find a “common sense solution” to the new city hall, among other things.

“I honestly believe we need a financial plan put

in the works to address the condition of the city streets in the near future,” Schoon said. “Last but not least, I’d like to see the continued efforts of the city and economic development to build a new subdivision in town. I would add bringing new business to town would be high on this list as well.”

Knapp also expressed a desire to see the city through the end of the COVID-19 pandemic, which he said has been tough to be in office during.

The incumbent mayor said he desires more commercial businesses in town and finding places to put them. Knapp wants to continue developing the city’s operations and infrastructure.

“We got public works formed and started doing sewer work,” Knapp said. “Things that hadn’t been done in forever. We’ve put everything we can into infrastructure. The whole success of [being mayor] comes from putting committees together and having a council that responds to its duties. I’ve been happy with department heads. Nothing gets done with one guy. We have a good team.”

Schoon believes the city council and citizens are equally important in making changes that work for the good of everyone’s interests. He sees the position of mayor as a leadership role in which to “provide direction and promote unity in the community.”

On his campaign Facebook page, Schoon said he supports a reasonable budget and keeping taxes flat, listening to citizen’s concerns and creating a good working environment that enables the public works department to run efficiently.

Schoon and Knapp have worked together for the past eight years. Knapp said he admires Schoon’s dedication and has been able to count on him for things like water, sewer and street-related issues.

“Working with him in the past, we have accomplished a lot of good things together,” Schoon said. “Running against him is nothing personal in regards to our friendship. Doug is a good guy and has done well as mayor. My reason for running is it is just time for a change.”

Remember Maxson’s orange rolls at the Pines?

F

irst I want to thank everyone for all the beautiful cards and messages we received on our 70th anniversary. I still remember it as if it were yesterday.

Walking into the little baking room where John Maxson of White Pines restaurant was covered with flour. We discussed what my wedding cake would be like. It was to have white lilies of the valley on it with little green leaves.

The morning of the wedding, my sister Ruby Jean, Kenneth, and I picked it up. Kenneth sat in the back seat of the car and held the cake as we headed for the Lutheran Church in Polo.

I was not too concerned about the bride and groom seeing each other before the wedding on that day 70 years ago.

How many of you remember John Maxson and his orange rolls at the Pines? He had this small little room where he did all of his baking and his signature orange rolls stood out like no others.

He had quite a sense of humor. He loved to tuck his baking apron around his waist and head out to the dining room to say hello to the guests.

I remember one day in particular when I was just giving the dessert menu to a group of ladies.

Johnny stopped at the table and added to my dessert spiel. “Oh, and we have Brown Betty!”

Now there was such a dessert as Brown Betty, but we did not have that at the White Pines. Of course they all wanted this new dessert.

John quickly turned and headed back to the kitchen with me following. I said to him, “What are we going to do since they all want this dessert that we do not have?”

He laughed and said, “Just go back and tell them we are all out of it!!” And that was what I did.

We all had many stories to tell at the White Pines and I always enjoyed going back there to eat. I would think of all the polishing of the furniture and the logs in those unique rooms.

Hopefully it will be open again someday when this virus is all gone.

We had our second shot three weeks ago. We have started to go out a little and we gathered with friends for an evening dinner on St. Patrick’s Day downtown.

It was good to see everyone and catch up. The problem is that you have huddled in your house for so long that you are inclined to just want to stay home.

However the days are warming up and it is just great to get out and walk around the yard. The little weeds are easy to pull at the present.

The crocus that I planted last fall from a fundraiser Krista had in Wisconsin is starting to bloom. I am enjoying watching those. Also from her fundraiser, I got some daffodil bulbs and they are coming up.

I had lots of daffodils in Eagle Point and the first thing I did when we moved into the little house in town was plant them there. I enjoyed them from my kitchen window. So I am looking forward to seeing the ones I have planted here when they start to bloom.

Polo Economic Development is going to use this same fundraiser to help Polo. You will be hearing from us later on as we promote selling bulbs to beautify Polo. Keep us in mind for this fall promotion. I am glad we can now start to get out to see how our outside came through last winter’s cold days.

I am finished with the articles on the women and the making of the atomic bomb at Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Thank you for all the nice comments.

One person who contacted me has family in that area and they had never spoken of Oak Ridge and the atomic bomb. She wondered if they even knew about it. The element of secrecy was very imbedded in the people who worked there and never seemed to go away.

I want to get back to the making of the old Edgewood golf course at the edge of Polo. That means going to the library and doing more research.

My aunt who will be 99 in June has had Covid pneumonia for several weeks. Believe it or not, she is coming through it and we all thought she would not survive. It is tricky stuff.

Someone has asked me to write about early education in Ogle County so I have dug out the big folders from our files. I am sorting through all the information I found many years ago before I put the display together at Aplington House.

So coming up will be old Edgewood Golf Course and early education.

Conservation forest to open this summer north of Oregon

The business consists of a conservation memorial forest where customers can purchase a tree dedication for the exclusive right to rest cremains there.

Better Place Forests went through an over 12-month approval process with the Ogle County Board.

“It’s a wonderful property,” Better Place Forests CEO and Co-Founder Sandy Gibson said. “It’s similar to our other forests, a mix of species.

But out west we have redwoods. Ogle County has 11 species for people to find a tree that means something to them. The waterfront is important.

It’s close to Chicago, Milwaukee and Madison. Customers want to come with their family for a day. It’s perfect for that and close to things like the state park.”

north of Lowden State Park.

The location will allow local families who choose cremation a new option to commemorate loved ones to rest underneath a private and permanently protected tree native to the land.

Deposits are currently being taken from families for trees and

online tours can be taken. The forest will likely open this summer, but the timeline is tentative due to COVID-19.

“We want customers to visit this summer,” Gibson said. “Deposits can still be paid beforehand.”

Gibson said the forest will have visiting hours, but will be private most times. Staff has not been hired, but a forest can have up to six staff members. Hiring will start this spring. Millions will be spent developing the landscape with things like a visitor’s center using local contractors.

Rick Ryland of Oregon has been the property’s caretaker for 14 years and approves of what it will become.

“When I found out that Better Place Forests would take over the property, I was thrilled,” Ryland said. “All of those trees could have easily been cut down and turned into farmland or developed. Knowing that Better Place Forests will conserve the land and help more people connect with the natural beauty of this unique forest makes me incredibly happy.”

Berns commits to play football at North Central

jhelfrich@shawmedia.com Oregon senior Breccan Berns has committed to play football for North Central College in Naperville next year.

“I am excited about playing at North Central College and look forward to moving to college football after this season,” Berns said.

“North Central has a great football team and great academics, as I am interested in being a business major there and it’s not too far from home.”

North Central is the current national champion in Division III football, having won the last Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl in 2019.

Berns plays quarterback for Oregon. The Hawks kicked off their season on March 27 against Byron after the shift to a spring season was brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Last year, Berns led the Hawks in rushing yards and passing yards and led the Big Northern Conference in rushing carries in the regular season.

Berns will play baseball for Oregon after football this spring. Last year he batted over .400 with an on-base percentage of over .600.

High school football fans who were missing all the drama the gridiron brings, were not disappointed on March 27 when two NUIC teams, Forreston and Milledgeville, battled into overtime.

Forreston started the scoring when Cardinal quarterback Lukas Lingel connected with Jordan Neuschwander for a 60-yard completion for a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage. The two-point attempt failed, but Forreston led 6-0 just seconds into the game.

That score remained until the fourth quarter when Milledgeville quarterback Nick Smith connected with Daniel Lohnes on a 7-yard pass with 8:45 remaining in the game to tie it 6-6. Scoring drives for both teams failed in regulation prompting the move to overtime.

In overtime, the Missiles got the ball first and on the first play Smith found a wide-open Gage Wilk in the left corner of the end zone for a 10-yard touchdown. Smith connected with Ryan Kendall on the two-point conversion to give Milledgeville a 14-6 lead.

Forreston’s overtime points came on a jet sweep to Neuschwander in

a five-yard yard run to the end zone.

But Neuschwander came up short on the conversion when Kendall tackled him the backfield for a 14-12 Milledgeville win.

Milledgeville was led by Damon Miller who had 61 yards rushing on 21 attempts. Kendall added 46 yards rushing on 11 attempts. Nick Smith was 4-8 passing for 33 yards.

The Cards were paced by Neuschwander with 106 yards rushing.

Saturday’s game was Forreston’s first game of the season. Its first game was cancelled due to COVID-19 protocols.

“This was our first game and we had first game mistakes, but Milledgeville, to their credit, capitalized on those things,” said Forreston coach Kyle Zick. “It’s tough on the kids. I know this hurts and there’s going to be anger, pain, and frustration and everything that goes with that, but we finally go to play a game.

“There was an excitement out there that I enjoyed and the kids were excited and played hard. We just made too many mistakes,” he said.

Forreston (0-1) will travel to Amboy Earleen Hinton/Shaw Media (0-1) in another NUIC South game.

March 26 8-Man Football The Polo Marcos jumped out to a huge first-quarter lead and never looked back in a 56-0 win over shorthanded Alden-Hebron in an 8-man football game Friday night in Polo.

Football games were full of ups and downs M

y intention for attending the Polo and Alden-Hebron football game was primarily to do some socializing.

Seconds after I walked inside the gate, old friend Curt Cavanaugh greeted me and it was non-stop visiting with Marco peeps prior to start of the game.

That was the fun part of the evening. What wasn’t so enjoyable was witnessing what was taking place on the field. Alden-Hebron, the same school that started 8-man football now seemed incapable of playing it.

The Little Giants showed up at Polo with only nine players, of which seven were freshmen. The lone senior was a 5-foot-2, 120-pound girl.

What happened to a program brimming with enthusiasm after converting from 11-man to 8-man in 2017?

A couple seasons ago, A-H went 6-4 in 8-man and then 1-7 last year. Coach John Lalor, the founding father of Illinois 8-man ball, retired and suddenly the Little Giants had virtually no varsity players.

In chatting with a young man from A-H, who was watching a younger brother, he mentioned that kids at A-H don’t seem to want to play football anymore.

He was a senior when A-H converted from 11 to 8-man and was glad for the chance to play. In four short years, that attitude has changed at the school.

In the first half, Polo racked up 260 yards to (-3) for the visitors and was ahead 48-0. By then, Polo was playing mostly underclassmen anyway.

There were two ambulances on hand, but in manner of sportsmanship, the Marcos made sure those services would not be needed. After every play, Polo players went out of their way to help Little Giants up to their feet and I sense coach Alston told them beforehand not to go too hard on the woefully undermanned squad.

It brought back memories of watching Leland lose 86-12 to Dakota in a basketball regional at Polo last year. As bad as Leland was in basketball, A-H was comparable on the gridiron.

What happens when you don’t have enough bodies to play 8-man anymore? You know, there is 6-man football.

Ironically, the first game ever was played at Hebron in 1934. Hebron, Nebraska that is.

Nice effort by Oregon in a close 24-16 loss to Byron, part of a doubleheader Saturday at Mendota, with SV and ‘Bago the nightcap. Watched the game on Facebook and saw a lot of good things done by the Hawks.

For example, on a third-and-20, Breccan Berns and Isaac Reber connected on a nifty 41-yard completion to key an opening scoring drive. I’m still getting used to watching Oregon in a shotgun/

spread offense.

One drawback was penalties that stopped offensive drives and helped keep a Byron scoring drive alive. Remember, these guys haven’t played organized ball for about a year and a half.

Another drawback was seeing senior running back Gatlin Good go down with an injury. He has been plagued by that throughout his sports career at Oregon.

Several years ago, my wife Kathy took me to watch kids from her grade-school class play a Junior Tackle game. What stood out was watching Gatlin score touchdown after touchdown, as the players from the other team couldn’t keep up with him.

Another concern is on-going dilemma of low numbers, with 12 seniors and 6 juniors. Recently, someone has posted a photo from a 1940s or 50s yearbook with about 40 kids alone on the freshsoph team for Oregon.

Even Byron didn’t have its usual large-rostered squad, graduating 21 of 22 starters.

Listened to the Forreston-Milledgeville on the radio and it sounded like a combination of untimely penalties and Forreston not having all their personnel available, both contributing to the overtime loss.

But, as coach Kyle Zick said afterwards, that no matter what the circumstances were, it was just good to finally get out and play a game.

Not only that, but it was played on Forreston’s home field, which is a big deal to pull off this spring.

Faivre ran for 97 yards, and Soltow added 72 for Polo, which played its reserves for most of the final three quarters. Wolber ran for 53 yards, Merdian finished with 37 yards rushing and the one pass for 30 yards as the Marcos ran for 296 yards and finished with 326 total yards.

jhelfrich@shawmedia.com The Ogle County Sheriff’s Office made one DUI arrest and issued 93 total citations during its St. Patrick’s Day “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” enforcement period.

During the enforcement period, deputies issued 52 citations for speeding, seven citations for uninsured drivers along with seven arrests for people driving without valid licenses (revoked, suspended or no valid license). Four drug arrests were made as well.

“By keeping impaired drivers off the roads and ensuring that motorists and passengers are buckled up, we’re able to help make the roads a safer place for everyone,” Sheriff Brian VanVickle said in the press release.

The Sheriff’s Office joined forces

with highway safety partners and both state and local law enforcement in the St. Patrick’s Day enforcement campaign.

The traffic safety effort was funded by federal highway safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation as part of the statewide “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” and “Click It or Ticket” campaigns.

OBITUARY ANNA ALEX HATZIPANAGIOTIS MT. MORRIS – Anna Alex Hatzipanagiotis, 97, passed away on Thursday, March 25, 2021 in Pinecrest Manor Nursing Home, Mt. Morris.

She was born on Sept. 6, 1923, in Lawrence, New York, the daughter of Eleni and Pascal Alex.

Anna was educated in the New York Schools. She attended Pace College, Hunter University, New York City. She graduated from Gregg College for court reporting, and was a certified shorthand reporter in the states of New York, Iowa, and

Illinois.

Anna worked in the New York City District Attorney’s Office and the USA Department of Labor, Unemployment Division, as a hearing reporter; via civil services exams she became an office court reporter in the Nassau County District Courts in 1948, the first woman certified in the District Courts, and also did freelance work in New York, including working at the United Nations.

She was married to Dr. P Hatzipanagiotis on June 22, 1958 at St. Paul’s Greek Orthodox Church, in Hempstead, New York.

After her marriage she worked in the Chicago Courts (Cochran Agency) 1958/59. After 15 years as a homemak-

er, she returned to work at Polo Community High School for three years, Beier Company for three years as a secretary, worked as a quality control secretary at BorgWarner, Dixon for 14 years.

In 1992 she attended Sauk Valley College under the Displaced Worker Program and earned a certificate, 46 credit hours with 3.57 GPA in two semesters.

She worked as a part-time secretary for Orr & Reising Insurance, Mt. Morris since 1995.

She was a member of the Maids of Athens, Philoptohos in Hempstead, New York, secretary of the Long Island Little Symphony, secretary of the Hempstead Republican Club, member of the New York State Court Reporters Association

and the National Shorthand Reporters Association for many years, avid traveler, studied the arts and her Greek heritage having done much research of Greek history and having traveled to Greece twice.

Anna is survived by her son, Christos Hatzipanagiotis, Mt. Morris; and several nieces and nephews.

Anna is preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Eleni Hatzipanagiotis; brothers, Michael and Milton Alex; and sister, Smaro O’Neal.

Services were held Wednesday, March 31 at Oakwood Cemetery, Mt. Morris.

Source of Drinking Water The sources of drinking water (both tap water and bottled water) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over the surface of the land or through the ground, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and, in some cases, radioactive material, and can pick up substances resulting from the presence of animals or from human activity.

Contaminants that may be present in source water include: - Microbial contaminants, such as viruses and bacteria, which may come from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural livestock operations, and wildlife.

- Inorganic contaminants, such as salts and metals, which can be naturally-occurring or result from urban storm water runoff, industrial or domestic wastewater discharges, oil and gas production, mining, or farming.

- Pesticides and herbicides, which may come from a variety of sources such as agriculture, urban storm water runoff, and residential uses.

- Organic chemical contaminants, including synthetic and volatile organic chemicals, which are by-products of industrial processes and petroleum production, and can also come from gas stations, urban storm water runoff, and septic systems.

- Radioactive contaminants, which can be naturally-occurring or be the result of oil and gas production and mining activities.

Drinking water, including bottled water, may reasonably be expected to contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. The presence of contaminants does not necessarily indicate that water poses a health risk. More information about contaminants and potential health effects can be obtained by calling the EPAs Safe Drinking Water Hotline at (800) 426-4791.

In order to ensure that tap water is safe to drink, EPA prescribes regulations which limit the amount of certain contaminants in water provided by public water systems. FDA regulations establish limits for contaminants in bottled water which must provide the same protection for public health.

Some people may be more vulnerable to contaminants in drinking water than the general population.

Immuno-compromised persons such as persons with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, persons who have undergone organ transplants, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune system disorders, some elderly and infants can be particularly at risk from infections. These people should seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers. EPA/ CDC guidelines on appropriate means to lessen the risk of infection by Cryptosporidium and other microbial contaminants are available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800426-4791).

If present, elevated levels of lead can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead in drinking water is primarily from materials and components associated with service lines and home plumbing. We cannot control the variety of materials used in plumbing components. When your water has been sitting for several hours, you can minimize the potential for lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking. If you are concerned about lead in your water, you may wish to have your water tested. Information on lead in drinking water, testing methods, and steps you can take to minimize exposure is available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline or at http://www.epa.gov/safewater/lead.

Source of Water: POLO Based on information obtained in a Well Site Survey published in 1994 by the Illinois EPA, several potential sources are located within 1,500 feet of the wells.

The Illinois EPA has determined that the Polo Community Water Supply’s source water is not suspectibile to contamination. This determination is based on a number of criteria including; monitoring conducted at the wells; monitoring conducted at the entry point to the distribution system; and available hydrogeologic data on the wells.Furthermore, in anticipation of the U.S. EPA’s proposed Ground Water Rule, the Illinois EPA has determined that the Polo Community Water Supply is not vulnerable to viral contamination. This determination is based upon the evaluation of the following criteria during the Vulnerability Waiver Process: the community’s wells are properly constructed with sound integrity and proper siting conditions; a hydraulic barrier exists which should prevent pathogen movement; all potential routes and sanitary defects have been mitigated such that the source water is adequately protected; monitoring data did not indicate a history of disease outbreak; and the sanitary survey of the water supply did not indicate a viral contamination threat. Because the community’s wells are constructed in a confined aquifer, which should prevent the movement of pathogens into the wells, well hydraulics were not considered to be a significant factor in the susceptibility determination. Hence, well hydraulics were not evaluated for this system ground water supply.
