Tuesday’s springlike temps, sunshine, and a little patch of snow was perfect for Jeannie Kyker and her four-legged grandson, Tonka, when they ventured outside their home in Polo. Tonka, age 11, belonged to Kyker’s son, Justus Bartelt, and moved to Illinois when Bartelt, a Marine, was deployed to Afghanistan in February 2010. Bartelt, 27, was killed in action on July 16, 2010, while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. “Tonka is our grandson now,” said Kyker. “We drove down and got him when Justus was deployed and he’s been with us ever since. He does not mind the snow, but he does not like the wet grass.”
