Back the blue ordinance put on hold Over $900,000 saved on new jail construction

jhelfrich@shawmedia.com The Ogle County Board opted to hold off on voting on a “Back the blue” ordinance “guaranteeing qualified immunity” to employees of the Ogle County Sheriff’s Office at its Feb. 16 meeting — until its insurance carrier could give feedback on it.

Vice-Chairman Patricia Nordman said the item will be put on the agenda for a vote next month after the board has a clearer direction.

House Bill 3653 concerns police reform and currently sits on Gov. JB Pritzker’s desk.

Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle has various concerns about the bill, which includes eliminating cash bail within two years, allowing the use of deadly force only when an officer acts in self defense or defending others from bodily harm, making it easier to decertify officers by eliminating signed affidavit of complaint and mandating the use of police body cameras for all officers by 2025.

Part of the proposed ordinance reads as follows: “The County Board recognizes the

lawful right of Ogle County Sheriff’s Office employees to qualified immunity and indemnification when they act within the scope of their employment and are subjected to any civil cause of action brought against an employee resulting from or arising out of the performance of their duties, whether the employee was on or off duty at the time of the incident.”

The ordinance would have the county protect Sheriff’s office employees who are subjected to civil causes of action brought against them, when the employee is acting within the scope of their employment.

When the employee would qualify for indemnification, the County Board would agree to handle it by holding employees harmless from and pay damages or moneys which may be adjudged, assessed, or otherwise levied against any employee.

Employees could also be granted legal

representation throughout the course of any civil cause of action brought against them at the cost of the County Board and would have the ability to choose their legal counsel upon mutual agreement with the County Board.

Employees of the Sheriff’s Office who act outside the scope of their employment or commit acts of willful misconduct would not qualify for this type of legal immunity or indemnification.

Legal protection of Sheriff’s Office employees would only discontinue upon the removal of the proposed ordinance by two-thirds majority vote.

Judicial Center Annex Jeremy Roling of Gilbane Construction made his usual presentation on the progress of the new Ogle County Judicial Center Annex (county jail) which became occupied last week.

Roling said over $900,000 was saved during the process of construction, which is 100 percent complete.

“Being able to come up with that amount of savings shows how we were wise with decision making and we got the best bang for the county’s buck and spent its money wisely.”

The new jail will be fully-completed when a final inspection of the roof can be done after snow and ice melts off of it.

County Board Member Don Griffin said an estimate will be made on demolishing the old jail in March.

BY KAREN MERLAK The warmer weather will be a welcome relief from the deep freeze of the past few weeks. For those that are suffering from the effects of the recent storms, near and far, we send up prayers for warm relief. For every storm we face, we look to God for comfort.

This morning in church, we were greeted by Brian Toms as we gathered in person. Deb Ohlwine played accompaniment for a hymn as our congregation sang along. Pastor Charlotte Hoppe shared her first message for Lent.

While our plans for social events at church have come to a halt, we are still looking toward the future. Our committees are working together to do the behind the scenes work of the church. It takes many hands to do His work.

Stephanie and João have survived the debilitating snowstorm that affected all of Texas. They lost their electricity on Monday with most of the other residents. They were welcomed into a friend’s home to wait out the week. By Friday, they were back at their home

with everything working again.

My children start arriving home this week. Matt left Hawaii tonight and plans to arrive in Chicago on Monday morning. Clint is finalizing his plans to leave California by car. He will start driving back on Saturday.

Between work and school, my days and nights seem to run together, which makes the time go faster than expected.

It seems like only yesterday we were talking about how we could get together as a family.

Before Matt’s arrival, I asked him what kind of groceries he would like to have in the kitchen. It has been quite a while since I have had to share my home with my children. A few text messages later, I had my grocery list ready to go.

When my children were young, I enjoyed taking them to the store. I still remember a time when one of my children secretly added several items to the cart without my noticing. When we went to the checkout, I figured out what they had been doing.

I had to laugh as I really had not paid attention. As I took out the unwanted

items, this child would plead with me, stating that it was something we needed.

Children confuse their needs and wants, so parents make that distinction.

So many times in life, I have asked God for something I thought I needed.

In fact, I have pleaded with Him, just like my children did with me. Just like I told my children no, God has told me “no,” too.

As parents, we know what is best for our children. Just like our children don’t always understand that we are helping, we may not understand why we didn’t get what we wanted. God knows what is best for us.

No matter the outcome, God will make sure we have what we need. We are loved that much. We can trust that God will provide for us. I know that when I feel that God is leading me away from what I thought I wanted, I can trust Him. I hope to see you next week at our new building as we gather for worship.

We have room to be socially distant and safe. Come and share the time with our family in our little church in the country.

Seven-year-old was found unresponsive in his home Feb. 17

ehinton@shawmedia.com Family, friends, and classmates of Nathaniel Burton held candles and glow sticks as they stood in front of his elementary school Tuesday night as the investigation into his Feb. 17 death continues.

“My twins are in his class,” said Kristi Guentert as she waited for the vigil to begin. “They took it hard the first day when they found out, but everything the classroom has been doing has been helping.”

Seven-year-old Nathaniel, son of Bryan E. and Sarah L. (Safranek) Burton, was found unresponsive in his bed at 403 S. 10th St., around 2:30 a.m. a week ago, on Feb. 17. He arrived at KSB Hospital in Dixon in full cardiac arrested and was pronounced dead.

An autopsy was conducted the next day, but specifics on a cause of death are being withheld until the autopsy report and toxicology results are in, which will take about a month, Lee County Jesse Partington has said.

No arrests have been made, and the investigation into what officials have confirmed as a potential homicide continues.

Tuesday night, Nathaniel’s grandmother and other family members stood with more than 100 others as they paid tribute to the first-grader, just three blocks from his home.

“I had so much time with him this summer,” said his maternal grandmother, Colleen Hackman. “So many happy times with him. It just makes me feel so good that so many people care. And you know, I love my kids and I love other peoples’ kids and kids are, just you know … kids should be loved. So thank you, everybody, for caring.”

Craig Arnold, pastor of Riverstone Church on S. 10th St., in Oregon, said the vigil was being held to honor Nathaniel.

“This is where we are going to find healing through community, conversations, stories. This is where we are going to remember Nathan. We want this to be a celebration of life, not a slandering of those left behind in an investigation that is still going on.

So, there are a lot of questions here,”

Nathaniel Burton Arnold said.

Oregon Superintendent Tom Mahoney also addressed the crowd.

“I can tell you this is one of the most challenging things a school superintendent has to deal with,” Mahoney said. “Our staff, our school community hurts because of this loss.

We are grateful for the outpouring of support for our current students and our staff. It has been tremendous, and we are thankful for that.

“What we are focused on is our grieving process, and then how we support those students who are here with us. We just need you to know that we love your kids.”

Last week, Oregon Elementary School students made a memorial by decorating Nathaniel’s desk with handmade cards; they also put a teddy bear wearing a face mask in his seat.

Guentert said Nathaniel’s death also impacted her family.

“It hit me really hard, because I could not imagine anybody my kids’ ages passing away. And then finding out it could have been a homicide it makes it 10 times harder,” she said.

Her twins helped create the classroom memorial, and she purchased pots and seeds for his classmates to grow flowers in his memory.

The vigil was organized by Shannon Martin of Oregon, who has lived in the town since she was 12 years old and wanted to do something to help.

“I did not personally know the little boy. Oregon has always been a community for me, and I always felt that if I needed something I could always turn to the community, and I felt like this was a good time we could all come together,” Martin said.

“I was just standing in my kitchen on Thursday and posted it on Facebook, and it just kind of blew up from there.”

Volunteer firefighter reflects on 41 years

jhelfrich@shawmedia.com When Randy Travis was in college, there was a grass fire near his father’s house.

He went and helped extinguish it. Afterwards, Oregon’s Fire Chief at the time asked him if he would want to do it again. He went to the firehouse the next day and joined the department. He retired this past October after 41 years of service.

“I’ll miss helping people,” Travis, 63, said. “I believe everyone needs to do something for their community.

For me, that was firefighting.”

Travis said the camaraderie with volunteer firefighters on the department and other local squads is among the things he’ll miss most. While doing mutual aid in other towns, the other departments always expected to see him, because he was always there.

The decision to retire came after Travis found he couldn’t do things he did 20 years ago. He loved the job, but didn’t want to risk getting hurt, despite his landscaping job keeping him in good shape.

“I never thought I’d do it for 41 years,” Travis said. “But, on the flip side, I never thought I’d ever quit. I never saw an end to it. I just got used to loving it. My family was shocked I retired. They thought I’d do it forever too. My fiance said she did worry about me. My parents are relieved, too.”

Travis saw four different chiefs during his time at Oregon Fire. He also saw a lot of new trucks, personnel and training. He saw Oregon grow from a smaller department that just did firefighting to one that’s taken on more community responsibility.

Current Oregon Fire Chief Michael Knoup said Travis was an officer at different levels that brought experience leadership to the station.

“Over those many years you’ve seen a lot and a lot of change,” Knoup said, “He went from a department that just did firefighting and now it’s almost full-time with volunteer staff that does EMS. That was a game changer. It went from 300 to over 1,000 calls a year. He’s witnessed a lot of change.”

Being the longest-tenured on the department, Travis said he tended to know where tools were and where people lived. He recalls responding to calls at the same house three times in 10 years.

His most memorable call was at the Chana Sale Barn about 25 years ago.

“A three-year-old had his finger caught in the hole in the back of a pickup truck,” Travis said. “It took us an hour. Every time we’d try to get it out, he’d cry. We distracted him and pulled it out, and we went from crying to laughing.”

Travis looks back fondly on how the department educated the public during his time there. He went to schools and talked to students. He believes that went a long way after seeing a decrease in fires over the year.

When asked what he’ll miss most, Travis simply said helping people.

“When someone calls us, it’s the worst day of their life,” Travis said.

“We’re there to make it better. I like to think we did a lot of that over the years.”

For the second consecutive year, Reagan Middle School seventh-grader Kathleen Keesey won the Lee, Ogle County Regional Spelling Bee on Feb. 18.

The second place winner was Gage Zeiger, an eighth-grader at Aplington Middle School in Polo, and the third place winner was Kaleah Dale, a seventh-grader at Byron Middle School.

Lowden’s funeral held “in simple dignity” in 1943 Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon has researched the people, places and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is one of a series of the articles he has written.

overnor Lowden was raised on a farm in Iowa. Even though he married the daughter of a multi-millionaire and had a very successful career as a lawyer in Chicago, he chose to purchase and live on a farm near Oregon.

His 1943 obituary more or less shows he kept his roots on the farm and not with the many influential friends which included President Roosevelt. Also his funeral was held at the Sinnissippi Farms.

Here is information from a 1943 newspaper article about the funeral. Lowden died on March 20, 1943 at the the age of 82. He was born on Jan. 26, 1861 in Sunrise Township, Minnesota. He is buried at Graceland Cemetery in Chicago.

Lowden of Illinois will be in simple dignity, with employees of the family farm at Oregon, Ill., as pallbearers. Mrs. Albert F. The body of Illinois World War I governor who died Saturday at Tucson, Ariz., after a long illness was placed on a train at Tuscan Sunday and will arrive here Tuesday afternoon.

The Rev. Frederick F. Shannon, former pastor of Central Church of which Mr. Lowden was a trustee, will officiate at services to be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Lowden

Sinnissippi farm and at burial services at 4 p.m. in Graceland beside his wife, Florence Pullman Lowden.

Mrs. Madlener said the pallbearers would be: Lee Gentry, manager of Sinnissippi Farm and chairman of the Illinois agricultural adjustments committee; William Hewitt, chauffeur, with the family 42 years; George McLaren, superintendent of the farm, with the family 40 years; Fred Pauls, gardener; George Lehmann, night watchman; and George Leary, head farmer.

Surviving Lowden are three daughters, Mrs. Madlener and Mrs. Philip Miller of Chicago and Mrs. Frederick Wierdsma of New York, and a son, Pullman of California.

Their mother died six years ago.

Also surviving are four sisters, Miss Eleanor Lowden of New York City, a former professor at Grinnell College; Miss Isabel Lowden also of New York; Mrs. Herbert Sammis of Seattle, Washington and Mrs. Eva Sheldon of Iowa.

The following are named after Lowden. Camp Lowden Boy Scout Camp, Lowden State Park and Lowden Miller State Forest, all near his estate outside Oregon, Illinois.

Others were the Frank O. Lowden Home in Chicago and two Lowden Halls located on the campus of the Northwestern University School of Law in Chicago and Northern Illinois University in DeKalb.

Shouldn’t fun be the focus of high school sports?

W

ith high-school sports in Illinois being delayed several months, there is a concern that our kids won’t get a fair shake in college recruiting, as most other states have been on a regular schedule since last fall.

Additionally, other states have been conducting state tournaments, which can be a venue for potential college recruits to make a name for themselves. Illinois has been reluctant to do the same, further decreasing scholarship opportunities.

But, is too much emphasis placed on high school athletics as a proving ground for one’s fitness as a college athlete, especially in football and basketball?

Lost in all of this is the primary purpose of high-school sports.

According the IHSA, the opportunity for boys and girls to represent their school and community as they participate in interscholastic activities is a privilege unique to young people in American education.

The United States is different than other countries in offering high-school sports. It is an idea that is uniquely American and has become a cultural institution.

Nowhere in the IHSA’s mission statement is there language pertaining to preparation for a college career in sports. The most important word used is “privilege”.

In today’s me-first society, that word is underappreciated. What used to be the mindset of what can I do for my school and community as an athlete has been replaced by what can it do for me.

Or as John Kennedy famously said, “Ask not

what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.”

In looking back at the annals of prep competition in Illinois, the highest honor one could attain was the glory you brought to your town and school from athletic participation. That was the sole focus of generations ago.

If someone went on to college for sports, that was an ad-on, but nothing to get worked up about.

But, there was a time the Illinois state basketball tournament used to be a bigger deal than the NCAA’s.

Part of the blame for this falls on us in the media in how we cover sports.

It used to be that college recruiting did get much notice. Nowadays, there are services that have up-to-date reports on whether a prep athlete is 3, 4 or 5-star and what college they are considering.

On Aug. 21, 2020 I wrote an article about the involvement of my aunt and uncle in the making of the atomic bomb at Oak Ridge, Tennessee. I received several comments from others how they too had family members taking part in that Manhattan Project.

A number of weeks later my cousin sent me a picture of my aunt in the nursing home beside her bed that had a beautiful quilt on it. On the quilt was a book titled, “The Girls of Atomic City.”

While the snow and ice makes it treacherous for me to get out, I am going to give you numerous details of what it was like to be a part of that time in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

The book answered many questions for me.

P

eople came to work at Oak Ridge, Tennessee from all walks of life and with all levels of education. Kattie’s husband had left Alabama and her for a better paying job in Tennessee. Kattie was dusting the shelves in a library for a very small salary and she soon found herself heading 300 miles north to be part of the janitorial services at the Manhattan Project.

Kattie left her children with grandma for a bigger salary so her children could have a better life.

Her salary was sent home each week to help her children. When she arrived she had never seen such a large building that was being constructed.

In fact she could not even see the end of it.

She hoped she and her husband could have one of the little houses that were springing up all over the hillside. But they were Africa American and they were treated differently.

Her living quarters was a 16 by 16 foot “hutment” with a “potbellied stove” in the middle.

This plywood box would be home to four African American women and they each would pay $1.50 a week to live there. Kattie was determined to make it a home and she hoped there would be a church near-by. Guards could come in any time during the night to see if they were all in their quarters.

Lise and Ida were also treated differently because they were women scientists with magnificent minds. They themselves never made it to the United States but their studies did.

Lise managed to escape from Austria where her team had just discovered fission. Her nationality would make her a target for the Nazis so she had to leave her country. With the help of friends she made her way to Sweden and found work in a lab there.

At times women physicists were considered inferior to men because of their hair style. It might catch on fire in a lab. Her mind was full of

She helped them figure everything out and yet they never gave her credit for any of her help probably because she was a woman.

Ida’s work in the area of fission also had been noticed since she had made discoveries long before anyone else had figured it out.

In a paper she wrote, “Some distinctly new nuclear reactions take place which have not been observed previously.”TOP They did not pay any attention to her scientific results and even poked fun at her.

She was simply ahead of her time. She eventually married Walter another chemist who suggested one day that some of the head men talk to his wife about her studies.

They refused and said they did not want to “embarrass” her.

After the bombs were dropped and papers were written, these two women were never acknowledged for their contributions. Denise Kiernan wrote about them in her book and gave them the credit they deserved.

Ogle County teen to represent 4-H at National Ag Day Julia Heller of Ogle County will represent Illinois 4-H at the 2021 National Ag Day Student Leadership Program to be held virtually in March.

This program of the Agriculture Council of America prepares and engages young people to raise awareness of the importance of the agricultural industry and its impact on our nation’s society and economy.

Heller has served as a State 4-H Livestock ambassador, promoting 4-H livestock projects, and was active in planning the State 4-H Jr. Livestock Conference. She plans to study animal sciences at University of Illinois and hopes to become a veterinarian one day.

In her groundbreaking book, Silent Spring (1962), Rachel Carson warned the world about the environmental impact of chemical pesticides, most notably DDT. In this living-history program, Carson shares stories about her love of nature, her passion for writing, her three books about ocean life and her work to awaken the world to the beauty and fragility of nature.

Carson was not only an early environmental activist but was also a gifted writer whose words revealed the power of language to change how we view our place in the world.

It’s not Just A Bill, it’s the Oregon High School Spring Musical!

Yes, you’re reading this correctly.

Not only is Oregon High School putting on a spring musical this year, but the musical is Schoolhouse Rock Live!

This musical takes everyone’s favorite songs from the School House Rock television show and bundles them together around one cohesive plot: A new teacher nervous on the morning of his first day of teaching.

For adults, this show is sure to invoke feelings of nostalgia, while it will provide a lighthearted and fun educational experience for kids. The show dates and times are Thursday, March 11, Friday, March 12, Saturday, March 13 at 7 p.m. and a Sunday matinee on March 14 at 2 p.m.

All performances will be held in the Oregon High School music room.

Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students.

attendees at each show, we ask that you make reservations in advance in order to attend,” said OHS Choir Director Zach Hall. “Please send all reservations to zhall@ocusd.net.”

Oregon Park District offers new twist on Easter events The Oregon Park District is offering a new twist for a popular Easter event this year.

The district is offering a fun alternative to the traditional Easter Egg Hunt on Wednesday, March 24 at Oregon Park West.

Participants can sign up to walk the StoryWalk Trail reading The Story of the Easter Bunny by Katherine Tegen.

Following the StoryWalk, families can enjoy a couple of minutes with the Easter Bunny (socially distanced), snap a few pictures and children will receive a small goodie bag.

Time slots are every five minutes (limit two adults and four children per time) starting at 1:30 p.m. and ending at 6:10 p.m.

CDC/IDPH guidelines will be followed.

increasingly popular in recent decades.

According to the National Institute of Food and Agriculture, sustainable agriculture seeks to increase profitable farm income, promote

The widespread adoption of various technologies over the last 20-plus years has helped farmers streamline their operations, making their farms more efficient and less wasteful as a result. In addition, many farmers have embraced sustainable farming, which is a relatively recent approach to agriculture. According to the Union of Concerned Scientists, sustainable agriculture is a complex, multi-faceted concept. Sustainable agriculture intends to contribute to a robust economy by making farms profitable. Farmers who embrace sustainable agriculture also aim to have a positive effect on the en-

vironment and their surrounding ecosystems. That’s accomplished by embracing strategies that focus on building and maintaining healthy soil, managing water wisely, minimizing pollution, and promoting biodiversity. The National Institute of Food and Agriculture notes that sustainable agriculture encompasses a wide range of production practices, including some associated with conventional farming and some linked to organic farming. As a result, sustainable farming should not be mistaken for organic farming, or vice versa. However, the UCS notes there’s a strong likelihood that certified organic produce at local grocery stores are byproducts of farms that embrace sustainable agriculture.

BRIEFS On Feb. 4, Abbey Brooks competed in the Agriculture Education CDE (Career Development Events) which is comprised of two parts.

The first is to design a lesson plan including all the materials needed like a

slide deck, activity, and worksheet. The second part is to teach this lesson to students in front of the judges.

Due to the COVID-19 restrictions and for everyone’s safety, this was conducted virtually, which allows students to experience what teaching is like at the

moment. Brooks received second place and is hard at work preparing for the state competition.

Brooks plans to go to Highland Community College and then transfer to a four-year university to become an agriculture instructor and FFA advisor.

OBITUARIES SCOT J. DEWALL

WILLIAM B. WAGNER

MT. MORRIS – Scot J. DeWall, 50, of Mt. Morris, passed away Tuesday, February 16, 2021, at Serenity Hospice and Home in Oregon.

He was born Sept. 15, 1970 in Rockford, to James and Elaine DeWall. Scot was an employee at McDonalds for over 18 years.

He was a man of great faith and was a member of the Polo Church of the Brethren, while attending many other churches in the area too. The Special Olympics were especially important to Scot, and he earned a gold medal in bocce ball at the Special Olympics in Seattle.

Scot was a diehard fan of the Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bears, and all Polo sports. He loved spending time with kids, especially his nieces and nephews.

Surviving Scot are his mother and father, Elaine (Hale) Guyer of Oregon, and James (Melodie) DeWall of Oregon; sister Holli (Brian) Sanders of Shannon; brother Brant (Colleen) Dambman of Simpsonville, South Carolina; nieces and nephews Aubrey Sanders, Blake Sanders, Tucker Dambman, and Wade Dambman; and step-niece and nephew Christian and Taylor Sanders.

He is preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents.

Services were Monday, Feb. 22, at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home in Forreston.

Burial was at White Oak Cemetery. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

A memorial has been established for the Special Olympics, Red Hots, and Polo Boosters.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to Dr. Danny Isawi, Dr. Hanny Isawi, and Serenity Hospice and Home in Oregon, for their great care.

OREGON - William B. Wagner, 84, died Monday, February 15, 2021 in Dixon.

He was born Dec. 2, 1936 in Dixon, the son of Charles and Irma (Cronk) Wagner.

Bill attended Mt. Morris High School and shortly afterwards enlisted and served in the United State Army.

In 1957, he was a member of the 505th Infantry, the 11th Airborne Division as a paratrooper serving a tour of duty in Germany.

Bill worked at A&P supermarket and Kable Printing Company in Mt. Morris for many years. He then went to work for Delmonte Foods Corp. as a forklift driver in Rochelle until his retirement in 1998.

In his younger years, Bill was a member of the Leaf River Horseshoe Riding Club. He enjoyed trail riding in southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois. He enjoyed many years as a member of the Mt. Morris Boat Club, where he and his family enjoyed water skiing and camping.

He was also a lifetime member of the Mt. Morris Moose Club. He was an avid bowler with the Kable Printing teams, enjoyed going fishing, and was an avid Chicago Bears fan.

Bill married Sharon Ackerson on March 29, 1969 at the Ashton United Methodist Church in Ashton. Bill and Sharon enjoyed square dancing and traveling throughout the U.S. in their RV club. They spent many years as snowbirds with friend in Weslaco and Alamo, Texas.

Bill was a member of the Oregon United Methodist Church, and later in life, the Lighthouse United Methodist Church of Oregon.

He was predeceased by his parents; wife, Sharon; daughter, Janet Heier; grandson, Joshua Wagner; and brothers Charles Jr., Richard, and Jerry.

Bill is survived by his children, Robert (Peggy) Wagner of Baileyville, Joyce (Dana) LaPier of Belvidere, Jeffrey (Liz)

Wagner of German Valley, Dawn Valdes Wagner of Sharon, Wisconsin, and Chad Wagner of Oregon; 14 grandchildren, Ryan, Heather, Rebekah, Ben, Ashlea, Kyle, Kyle H., Brooke, Isa, Emily, Juan, Faith, Jovani, and Carlos; 13 great-grandchildren; sisters, Dorothy Capes of Mt. Morris, Patricia Carpenter of Belvidere, Peggy Janssen of Oregon, Shirley Palmer of Leaf River, and Beverly Snyder of Louisville, Kentucky; and many nieces and nephews.

A private funeral service will be held at the Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral Home, 110 S. Seventh St., in Oregon, with the Pastor Don Jamerson of the First Free Methodist Church in Freeport, officiating. Private burial will be held at the Ashton Cemetery. A celebration of life service will also take place in the summer.

She loved to sew, quilt, she made blankets for family and friends, and she enjoyed camping and babysitting. But most of all, she enjoyed raising her children and her time with her family.

Theresa is survived by her husband, Kenneth Zipse of Leaf River; children, Elizabeth (David) Bruss of Cortland, Jeffrey (Christine) Zipse of German Valley, and Richard (Jennifer) Zipse of Leaf River; and 10 grandchildren, Austin and Phillip Bruss, Rees, Cole, Lily, and Luke Zipse, and Dalton, Breanna, Madison, and Brady Zipse.

Theresa is preceded in death by her parents; brother, Bubba Trahan; and sister, Marie Acker.

Funeral services were held Feb. 24 at the Finch Funeral Home, 405 East Hitt, Mt .Morris. Burial will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Freeport at a later date.

STATE POLICE Feb. 19 At approximately 6:58 p.m., a state trooper stopped to assist a motorist who was on the ramp from IL-72 to Interstate 39 southbound in Ogle County. During the investigation, the trooper learned the driving privileges of the driver, Skyler Hughes, 28, of Rockford,

Hughes was arrested and charged with improper parking in the roadway, driving while license revoked, driving while under the influence, and theft of government property.

OGLE COUNTY SHERIFF Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle reports the following police activity Feb. 16 At approximately 7:46 a.m. deputies were dispatched to a two vehicle accident with possible injuries on Interstate 39 near mile marker 112 northbound.

After an investigation, deputies learned a Kia SUV driven by Laurie Sievert, 51, of Davis Junction was traveling northbound on Interstate 39 in the right lane. While Sievert was traveling northbound she began to lose control of her vehicle on the icy road and entered into the left lane.

Daniel Drews, 48, of Belvidere was also traveling northbound on Interstate 39 at the time in his Jeep SUV while in the left lane. As Sievert’s vehicle entered the left lane, Drews’ vehicle struck the rear end causing heavy damage to both vehicles.

At 8:44 a.m. deputies responded to a three-vehicle accident in the 10,000 block of East Illinois 38. After an investigation, deputies determined that a Volkswagen driven by Charles Echelbarger, 37, of Rochelle, was westbound when Echelbarger lost control due to slippery road conditions.

The Volkswagen made contact with a westbound Chevrolet driven by Carolyn McBride, 61, of Rockford, before colliding head on with a Chrysler minivan that was eastbound at the location.

The driver of the Chrysler, Fred Koch, 79, of Ashton, and passenger Anita Koch, 78, of Ashton, were taken by Rochelle Ambulance to Rochelle Community Hospital for treatment of non life threatening injuries.

Feb. 18 Santino Sanchez, 20, of Rockford was arrested for driving with no valid driver’s license and on a Rockford felony warrant after being stopped by deputies on Illinois 251 near Holcomb for speeding.

Sanchez was also cited for speeding and was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held for the outstanding warrant.

Feb. 20 Angela Bahr, 30, of Beloit was issued a citation at 3:52 p.m. for driving while license suspended after deputies performed a traffic stop in the 8,000 block of North Freeport Road. Bahr was additionally issued citations for operating

SPECIAL FUNDRAISER

In early 2018 a handful of veterans and some community members met in Lena to explore the possibility of creating an F-4 Phantom Jet Memorial Park in northwestern Illinois.

The site in Lena on Main St. was selected for the site as the land was donated to the committee for the purpose of the Memorial. Shortly thereafter, the group became the owners of one of the last remaining F-4s.

Due to the generosity of the northwestern Illinois communities, organizers were able to pay the initial cost of bringing the aircraft to Lena.

Feb. 17 Shirley M. Hoffman, 85, of Oregon, was issued a citation at 1:36 p.m. for a stop arm violation. This violation occurred in the 100 block of E. Washington Street.

Nikolas J. Barnhart, 23, of Chana, was issued a citation at 7:39 p.m. for operating an uninsured motor vehicle. This violation occurred at the intersection of 10th and Webster Streets.

Feb. 18 At 11:37 a.m., police took one 14-yearold female juvenile, Oregon, into limited

custody for the offense of theft less than $500. The juvenile was released into her parent’s custody with a referral to the Ogle County State’s Attorney being filled out.

Feb. 19 At 7:10 a.m., police investigated a two-vehicle traffic crash in the 300 block of Armstrong Street involving a 2005 Chevrolet driven by Jeffrey S. Taylor, 28, of Oregon, and a parked 2002 Suzuki belonging to Jacob U. Feiden, 27, of Oregon. No citations were issued.

Feb. 20 Michael D. Ramsey, 29, of Oregon, was issued a citation at 10:07 p.m. for disobeying a traffic control device. This

violation occurred at the 4th and Washington Street intersection.

Feb. 21 Andrew E. Hainzinger, 36, of Arlington Heights, was arrested at 2:18 p.m. for driving while license suspended, resisting/obstructing a peace officer, and possession of drug equipment.

Hainzinger was also issued citations for operating an uninsured motor vehicle and improper use of a registration.

Hainzinger was transported to the Ogle County jail.

These violations occurred in the 300 block of Monroe Street.

Two parking tickets and one verbal warning issued Feb.15-21.
