Auman: 3,000 vaccines administered Administrator says process to take months

jhelfrich@shawmedia.com Ogle County Health Department Public Administrator Kyle Auman told the Oregon City Council on Tuesday that 3,000 county residents have received COVID-19 vaccines.

Auman made a presentation on the vaccination progress to council members on Tuesday.

Auman said more than 3,000 residents have been vaccinated with 556 receiving complete doses.

The county is entering phase 1B of vaccinations which includes people over 65, first responders, and large employers. Auman estimates 22,000 county residents are in that group and, he said, completing those vaccinations will take several months.

“It’s a tall order ahead of us,” Auman said. “For those 65 and over, the best way to go is to go to our site and put information in and we get notified.

We have 5,000 people on our over 65 list.

We’re vaccinating along with Rochelle Community Hospital and KSB clinics.

KSB should be on by next week and will start with people closest to Oregon and Polo and then moving out.”

Auman also said a large focus will

be put on vaccinating businesses that pose a heightened risk of spread. Rochelle Community Hospital is working with the OCHD to set up teams to go into those businesses. The OCHD has seen an “overwhelming response” from businesses asking about vaccinations.

“We’re looking at Rochelle Foods, Etnyre, Tyson and Woods as targets,” Auman said. “We’re hoping to vaccinate them within a month but they’re not scheduled. Exelon is a priority as well and we’re in conversations. Supermarkets are on the list but we’ll probably have them come to us.”

This past week has been very busy with school and work. Long phone calls with my school friend have helped to manage the busyness of classes, student teaching, and preparing for after graduation.

My family is one week closer to seeing each other. The excitement of being together again grows with each day.

For now, my children are busy with work, mixed schedules, and activities with friends.

This month has been especially busy, traveling back and forth to Rockford for my student teaching semester and redefining my new role at work. At times, it feels as though I am balancing on a slippery surface, where a fall is inevitable.

My work and school friends ask me how I manage it all. What they can’t see is that I am not managing it all. Most days, I am just getting by like most other people. I struggle to get everything done.

The difference is the peace I carry with me. I know God is in all things.

When I started in my education experience, Charlotte reminded me that it is only a season. Most of the events that bring on the most stress won’t last very long when compared to our entire life.

Sometimes, that season seems to last forever. In those moments, I remind myself to trust and rest in Him. It takes courage to keep going, to face the unknown, and take on new challenges.

We all come from different backgrounds, bringing our own talents to everything we do. It is easy to compare ourselves to others who seem to have it all. We are all unique and God will be with each of us in the unique way that we need Him. Balancing work and home life brings so many challenges. God is ready to remind us that we are not alone. He is here to remind us that no matter what we are facing, He provides a way to keep going.

I hope to see you next week in our church. We are planning to meet in person for a service at 9:30am. Masks will be required and we will be socially distant. Charlotte will bring her midday midweek message on Facebook Live.

Whether we are together or apart, we share the love of God. As we continue to take courage, we know that God is with us every step of the way. Come and hear the ways that God walks with us each day.

Still, I try to resist the urge to wish the time away. Each day we are given is a blessing. For each and every day, we are thankful to the Creator.

This morning for church, Pastor Charlotte Hoppe shared her message for the morning over Facebook Live. Charlotte continues to share her thoughtful messages in the midday, midweek session on Facebook. We are blessed to have her with us.

In the afternoon, our search committee met to work on the next step of finding a new pastor. We knew when we hired Charlotte, the arrangement would be temporary. We will treasure the friendships that have been formed over the past few years.

On Tuesday evening, our PEO Chapter DW met via Zoom. I was not able to attend the meeting due to school and work commitments. I missed visiting with my sisters while we celebrated the founding of our sisterhood.

jhelfrich@shawmedia.com The demolition of roughly 25 percent of the old Kable Printing plant in Mt. Morris has brought tears to some of the former employees who worked there.

Several cars, driven by past employees, passed by the site at 404 S. Wesley Avenue on Friday morning as three excavators worked on demolishing the brick portion of the once-thriving business.

“I worked there 20 years. It’s just so sad,” said one past employee.

About 230,000 square feet of the facility will come down including the east end offices and the south side ink farm and press rooms.

Village Trustee and former Kable employee Jerry Stauffer said the work is being done to upgrade the property for a future sale. He said the demolition will likely take months.

The property has been owned by Phoenix Investors of Milwaukee since 2018 when that firm purchased it the 644,000 square-foot plant property for $200,000.

The plant was in operation for 114 years and shut down in 2013 after also operating under the names of Quebecor and World Color.

The portion of the facility that is being demolished has been remodeled “too many times” and needs to come down, Stauffer said.

Phoenix purchased the property from Mt. Morris Business Park LLC, Downey, Calif., which has no connection to the Village of Mt. Morris.

Mt. Morris Business Park LLC bought the property in March of 2013 for $375,000.

According to a 2018 article in the Milwaukee Business Journal, Phoenix Investors specializes in buying large, vacant industrial buildings, updating them, and leasing them to new tenants.

Quad/Graphics Inc., based in Sussex, Wisconsin, ceased production at the plant on May 13, 2011, ending 113 years of printing at that location.

The business was originally called Kable Brothers Printing and was founded in 1898 by twin brothers Harvey and Harry Kable.

For decades Kable Printing was the village’s largest employer, at one time providing jobs for more than 2,000 people.

Quad/Graphics, Inc., acquired the Mt. Morris plant in January of 2010 when it purchased Worldcolor Press, Inc., for $1.3 billion.

Forreston, German Valley police chief passes away ‘He was our police officer. He looked after us’

jhelfrich@shawmedia.com When a Forreston or German Valley resident called Mike Boomgarden’s cell phone they would hear the whistling of the Andy Griffith Show theme song.

The 1960 sitcom revolved around small-town sheriff Andy Taylor, who had some similarities to Boomgarden, the longtime Forreston and German Valley Police Chief.

“He was from around the area and understood people, situations and enforced the law,” Forreston Village President Mark Metzger said.

“He tried to calm the situation and talk things through with people. If it’s not an emergency, he thought you don’t really need to be ticketed or fined. People make mistakes and deserve second chances.”

Boomgarden passed away Jan. 20 after complications from a stroke he suffered in November.

Boomgarden was raised in German Valley and lived in Forreston.

Metzger spoke of how he related well to the community and people and knew where to draw the line when people pushed it or took advantage of his goodwill.

He was in law enforcement for four decades, working for the Stephenson County Sheriff’s Department as chief deputy and as chief in both Forreston and German Valley. When he wasn’t on the job, Boomgarden enjoyed being outdoors, riding his motorcycle, shooting, hunting, showing cattle, and doing farm work.

Forreston Interim Police Chief Chris Thiel, who has replaced Boomgarden, at least for now, worked with him for 14 years.

“He knew how to police small towns and have a relationship with the community,” Thiel said.

“There’s so much you can learn from the older generation. Learning how it started and what the future will hold are two things that are intertwined.”

Thiel said Boomgarden “always knew what was going on” thanks to having so many friends in the area, law enforcement and otherwise. Boomgarden taught Thiel that someone is always watching or listening in a small town and to pay attention to what people say.

prior to his passing and had started to give responsibilities over to Thiel slowly, along with more small-town wisdom.

“There’s more one-on-one connection,” Thiel said. “You sit next to people in the stands at football games. When something happens, you’re more integrated. Which is good and bad.”

Thiel was always in awe of Boomgarden’s detective skills, which made him think of another TV show, 1968’s Columbo.

“His interviewing tactics reminded me of Columbo,” Thiel said. “As a detective, he knew everything that was going on, but he played dumb.

He’d get people to spill everything.

Asking dumb questions but all the while building a case.”

After Boomgarden’s passing, German Valley Village President Mark Jewell traced his affiliation with the village back to 1978. He fondly recalled Boomgarden riding around German Valley Days on his gator, keeping an eye on everything.

Boomgarden was hired in 1978 as German Valley’s police officer for $6 an hour for not more than 15 hours a week.

Jewell said Boomgarden had a sponsorship program and would send officers out with children to buy them a new bike if they were in need. Running the communities’ Bike Rodeos was one of his favorite duties.

“It was wonderful to have him looking after the village,” Jewell said. “He was so knowledgeable yet did his best to work with citizens. If you were willing to work with him, he’d bend over backwards to work with you.”

Jewell recalls Boomgarden being around as a police officer way back to when he was a child.

“He was our police officer,” Jewell said. “He looked after us. The depth of his experience will be sorely missed.

Despite planning for his eventual retirement with him, the idea of replacing Boomgarden is something Thiel has struggled to even consider.

“If that happens, it’d be a set of shoes impossible to fill,” Thiel said.

“It’d be something I’d strive to keep the way it was in relating to the community. The time and commitment he put in can’t be matched.”

Highway crews worked 16-hour day to combat drifting

jhelfrich@shawmedia.com Sixteen Ogle County Highway Department employees worked 16 hours straight from early Tuesday morning into the evening clearing roads following Monday’s snowstorm.

County Engineer Jeremy Ciesiel said plows were out before snow even started to fall due to winds blowing snow out of fields and creating drifts on roads. The snow itself accumulated multiple inches starting Monday evening. Wind created more issues once snow fell.

“The snow came last night and it was nice and light,” Ciesiel said.

“It was a nice change from previous snows. The heavy winds created a lot of drifting. It’s been a battle all day with drifts coming back into the road again.”

Ciesiel said east and west roads were problematic with north and south winds. Crews started plowing 270 miles of county roads at 3:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

Three cars were in the ditch in the county to Ciesiel’s knowledge, which he thought was “decent” considering the conditions.

“It wasn’t the amount of snow I expected,” Ciesiel said. “We expected the wind to continue to blow, and it was a pain in the butt.”

Ciesiel said the winter weather so far has been favorable.

“The problem has been those light snows,” Ciesiel said. “We still have to go out for those and do the same as we would for four inches to keep roads clear. The nice thing is it’s been cold and has stayed cold. I prefer that. Freezing and thawing does a number on the roads.”

Multiple county schools were closed Tuesday including Oregon and Polo.

Oregon Superintendent Tom Mahoney said he made the decision to close after talking with local road commissioners.

“The main roads are in good shape,” Mahoney said. “There were some concerns about the outlying roads and drifting. I hope students enjoy the day off and get outside and play in the snow.”

Dixon bridge collapsed in 1873 during baptism Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon has researched the people, places and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is one of a series of the articles he has written.

BY OTTO DICK On Sunday, May 4, 1873, the bridge across the Rock River at Dixon, Illinois collapsed while spectators were observing a baptism ceremony in the river below.

This was also called the Truesdell Bridge disaster that killed 46 people and injured 56 others.

This bridge built by bridge contractor R. L. Truesdell, originally from Warren, Massaschuetts, was 660 feet in length.

This was one year after the C and I Railroad was built through Oregon.

From the beginning of the history of Dixon in 1830 travelers including Oregon Founder John Phelps crossed the river primarily by ferry.

Between 1846 and 1868 Dixon had an estimated eight wooden bridges across the Rock River.

These were destroyed by high water and floating ice jams each spring.

In 1868, after another bridge failure the city sought a more durable solution and accepted bids from 14 contractors for their first iron truss bridge.

The Dixon City Council took three ballots before favoring the Truesdell bid on a 5-3 vote.

One report stated the people were crazy for an iron bridge.

The Truesdell Bridge, a toll bridge, was dedicated on Jan 21, 1869. The Dixon Weekly Herald reported, “A structure more truly grand and beautiful to the eye can be found in no Western city and we presume in no Eastern one.”

The bridge featured five 132 foot spans, an 18 foot wide roadway and a 5 foot sidewalks on both sides, each guarded with a 3 foot high railing.

This bridge cost $75,000 which included $33,500 for the ironwork and $43,500 for the five stone piers that supported the structure.

While the Dixon bridge was being completed, a portion of the Truesdell bridge at Elgin, Illinois collapsed on Dec. 7, 1868. It was repaired but seven months later, on July 5, 1869 the Elgin Bridge partially collapsed again with people watching a tub race.

Immediately after the collapse, citizens and city officials began placing blame on various entities.

These included Truesdell the bridge designer, the Dixon City Council and the Baptists.

News spread quickly across the country with headlines titled “The Baptism of Death, Dixon’s Horror and A Bridge of Putty”.

By June, the Dixon City Council proceeded with plans to build a temporary wooden bridge, a Howe truss, across the river. lead his congregation following the Sunday Services to the river to baptize six converts, one man and five women.

The baptism site was on the north side of the river. At 6 p.m. that Sunday evening following the bridge collapse, 37 bodies had been pulled from the water.

High school sports seasons should start up again COMMENTARY Andy Colbert

W

ith pressure mounting from all corners of Illinois, the Department of Public Health unexpectantly gave approval to regions in Phase 4 to play sports.

On Jan. 19, the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association made an appeal to Governor Pritzer, expressing the desire that high-school basketball be allowed to start up.

The letter made several good points. First and foremost is the fact that basketball is being

played in 35 states with 11 more states planning to resume.

They also point out that the National Federation of High Schools categorizes basketball at medium risk and question why Illinois insists on terming it high risk.

The other major point is the emotional damage being done to our young people for depriving them of a much-needed holistic experience.

esterday we got our first Covid vaccination at Ogle County Health Department.

We have been signed up for maybe a month and this week they got to the elderly living in their own homes.

It is with a big sigh that one thinks young and yet realizes this is not where we are in the scheme of things.

So, we got the call and eventually headed to Oregon under the care of our son Steve. He is now retired and it is nice to have him come out for a couple of days. I had a couple of tasks for him to do and those have been accomplished.

In Oregon at the health department all was well organized. No lines and not a lot of people. You were quickly in and out. You did have to wait for a few minutes to see if you would have a reaction.

But that went fast and soon we were headed to Dixon for food to bring home.

We have been warned by Doctor Granddaughter Amy that we are not ready to step out into the world. We need to get our second shot, and wait a little more before we reach the top immunization level.

This needs to be accomplished before we take off visiting stores and restaurants. Just be patient.

Although I am not a shopper, I want to be able to climb in the car and drive to any store without the fear of picking up the virus. Even to go to the library, the post office, or to the museum in good weather seems like a luxury now.

I have been fortunate to have information and boxes full of history to keep me busy during this time along with holiday things. I have enjoyed all the Presbyterian Church history and I am still immersed in the last of the folders.

Some of you may be interested in knowing when the steeple was taken off the church. I had come across an article copied from the Tri-County Press about the removal of the steeple but the person doing the copying had failed to date the article.

I learned the hard way to make certain a date and the source is placed on everything one copies or even writes about. I learned this when Joan Raley and I were placing historical buildings on the national register.

I had placed all old newspaper clippings in a folder together. When I started going through this folder carefully I found the original newspaper clipping about the removal of the steeple. It was October 16, 1947. I was a freshman in high school and certainly not interested in steeples at that time.

The steeple was 130 feet high and the highest structure in Polo. Inspection had showed unsafe places in the structure and removal evidently was the answer rather than repair.

I remember him well since he provided me comfort at a time when I was a child and very frightened.

I was riding my bike near the Presbyterian Church when a car almost hit me. An individual attempted to lure me into his automobile.

His plea was that he needed help in finding an address. I looked up to see John Yeakle walking along the sidewalk and I told the individual to “Ask John, my neighbor.”

I got out of there immediately but was very scared. I could not even ride my bike.

As I went by the Presbyterian Manse, Rev. Lawrence was in the yard and he could see I was very upset. He calmed me down and watched as I got the rest of the way home since this was my neighborhood. He then called the police.

I still can remember that as if it were only yesterday and I never forgot Rev. Lawrence.

Family of missing Byron man still searching

jhelfrich@shawmedia.com Close family members of Brandon Cuddy haven’t worked a day since he disappeared.

Each day from 8 a.m. until dark, Cuddy’s girlfriend, Hailee Lind, along with his siblings Billy Cuddy and Kat Licona and cousin Josh Niedermeier search along Illinois 2 and the Rock River.

Cuddy, 27, of Byron went missing the night of Dec. 26. His car was found damaged on a steep bank of the river in the 9,000 block of Illinois 2 in rural Byron covered in snow on Jan. 6. Searches of the area and river over two days immediately afterwards by law enforcement and the family came up empty.

“We’ve been searching every single day since,” Lind said. “None of us have worked, going on a month now. We bought a boat and have been on the water. We talked to nonprofits who have helped out with searching equipment on the river.

Any daylight we have, we’re searching on foot. We dug up the crash site to find his belongings.”

The group has searched from Rockford to Byron along the river along with Lake Louise and other wooded areas. They had help from community members on two different Saturdays. One of those days, 96 people came out to help.

“The community has been so amazing,” Lind said. “Every day they reach out. It’s, ‘Please use my truck! Take my boat.’ People that don’t even know him.”

So far, the group has found some of Cuddy’s belongings, including a shoe and his cologne. They found his phone after digging around the crash site.

Those discoveries were more discouraging than helpful, Lind said.

“That’s the most traumatic thing,” Lind said. “People were saying he got flung into the river or he walked away. We found one shoe and it was terrible. That was the moment for us. He’s not here. It was horrible.

You’d think if he walked away, he’d take his phone and shoes.”

The family made the discovery of Cuddy’s vehicle while in a boat searching the river. The car was 10 feet from the water and down a hill, Lind said.

“There’s no words for it,” Lind said. “It was completely heartbreaking. I thought his dad was going to jump into the river and swim to it when we first saw it. I can barely remember that day, looking back.”

Lind expressed disappointment with the amount of searching that law enforcement has done since Cuddy went missing, before and after his vehicle was found. She said

(my wife) who was her 7th-8th grade school teacher a few years ago. We also enjoyed a sandwich provided by Northside BarBaQ and the nice fires provided an extra warmth for those who wanted to warm up a little and sit and relax.

I was really impressed with Santa as he greeted young and old. He seemed to be everywhere and constantly in motion.

There were also many who took advantage of the horse drawn wagon rides. We look forward to being able to attend next year’s event. Hopefully there will also be two events like this year. We also saw the Grinch, but did not get a chance to interact with him, but the costume looked great. Thanks to Earleen Hinton and the Republican Reporter staff for the great pictures. Super job on the coverage of the event as always.

police told her all of Illinois 2 was searched in the area, but to her, that didn’t add up.

“If that was true, wouldn’t they have found the car?” Lind said. “Then after we found the car, they got the dog out. They said the chances are he’s in the river and ‘the best we can do is go on with our everyday lives.’”

On Jan. 7, Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle said he was concerned that Cuddy may have ended up in the river due to the car’s damage and proximity to the river. River searches going forward will be difficult due to weather and the amount of ground to cover, he said.

“We understand they deserve closure and we understand their concerns,” VanVickle said. “We continue to go through the process of a river search and leads that come in. It’s not a closed case by any stretch.”

thing about a river search going forward.

“An Ogle County cop told me maybe in the spring he’ll be found when someone goes fishing,” Lind said.

Lind said she’s started to feel the effects of constant searching in more ways than one.

“It is exhausting, physically and emotionally,” Lind said. “Looking for a loved one’s body, it takes a toll. We have to block it out and it’s up to us. His parents have been out and they’re older. So emotionally draining.

It’s been a long 3.5 weeks.”

The Forreston FFA is selling flats of strawberries from the Florida Fruit Association, but due to COVID-19, things will run differently.

All orders will be submitted online. The link for the order form can be found on the Forrestville Valley District Website at fvdistrict221.org.

Payment will be collected at the time orders are picked up. Sales end on Friday, Feb. 19.

For the safety of all, students will not be selling door to door and will not be delivering orders.

Orders must be picked up at the Forreston Junior/Senior High School. A drivethrough pick up area will be set up behind the school by the shop door and football field.

“At pick up you will give your name and payment and the strawberries will be loaded for you into your vehicle,” said Kelley Parks, FFA adviser. “We are very happy to bring you this great tradition that is just so delicious!”

Strawberries will be delivered the week of March 15.

“Closer to the delivery time, the Florida Fruit Association will communicate a date for delivery. An email will be sent at that time so arrangements can be made for order pick up. Pick-up times will be scheduled after school with more details included in the email,” Parks said.

Schools back in session, navigating COVID-19

Vaccinations scheduled for staff

jhelfrich@shawmedia.com The Oregon School District currently has 11 positive cases, two probables and 66 students and staff in quarantine, Superintendent Tom Mahoney said.

The district returned to in-person school Jan. 4. There has been no spread in schools or interruption of in-person learning, Mahoney said. Oregon has stayed the course on its plan from last semester that allows families to choose in-person or remote learning. Mahoney said it will continue to track data and could make changes if there is spread in schools or staff is impacted by quarantines.

“Because of quarantines we’re close on staff at the elementary school,” Mahoney staff. “We haven’t added any full-time staff. We continue to use substitutes. There was already a shortage of those and teachers before the pandemic.”

Mahoney said the holiday break was “very beneficial” for everyone in the district. He didn’t see any confirmation of quarantines and positives from any gatherings over the break.

The number of students choosing remote learning has remained steady from last semester.

One change has been Wednesday at the high school and junior high

are now exclusively for students struggling in the traditional learning process.

“The vast majority of kids spend that day at home doing an asynchronous lesson,” Mahoney said.

“Others get more intensive learning with teachers. We invite those remote learners in when there’s less kids, and hopefully it puts parents at ease.”

That decision was made due to a 114 percent higher rate of students with one F at the end of the first semester at the high school compared to fall 2019.

A similar spike was seen at the high school.

“It was absolutely concerning,” Mahoney said. “This has been the most detrimental thing we’ve experienced in terms of delivering on our mission. What can we do to get them up to speed? We’ll reevaluate after 4-6 weeks and see if we need to do something different.”

Mahoney said 163 of 230 district staff members will be getting the COVID-19 vaccine on Feb. 8 and the second dose on March 8.

Oregon won’t be in session on Feb. 8 due to staff getting the vaccine and a remote learning planning day will be used. Two more will be used on March 8 and 9 due to effects of fever or fatigue from the second vaccine that can come as a result.

Polo Polo School District Superintendent Kelly Mandrell said students who have chosen remote learning are down from 21 percent to nine

percent as of this semester.

Mandrell called Polo’s COVID-19 numbers “low” and said a big impact from the holidays was not seen.

“We’re doing very well and pleased with our numbers and staff and kids,” Mandrell said. “We haven’t changed anything. “I think the break was huge and reenergizing.

We all kind of needed a break to enjoy our families, as best we could.”

Mandrell said the district is monitoring analytics and hasn’t seen any necessary changes yet.

Polo school staff got vaccinations on Jan. 21. About 70 employees signed up out of a total of 105.

Substitute teachers and coaches are included.

“I’m excited for the vaccine,” Mandrell said. “It still doesn’t change much. You still have to wear masks and stay apart. I think it’ll help people stay healthier.”

Like Oregon, Polo has seen issues with staffing due to quarantines.

“We’re still looking for subs,” Mandrell said. “We had a teacher resign due to health reasons and we were unable to fill that position.

Students will finish those classes online. It’s a problem. I’ve subbed a couple times. You do what you have to do.”

Forreston The Forrestville Valley School District was the first in the county to have staff vaccinated, Superintendent Sheri Smith said.

Eighty one staff members got the first round of doses on Jan. 19.

About half of the district’s employ-

ees signed up. The second dose will take place in February.

“I think those that wanted it were very excited,” Smith said. “It’s a step forward. To maybe get masks off at some point in the future and get back towards normal. We’re happy to get it out of the way.”

Smith said the district has still yet to see COVID-19 spread in schools and has been in-session since school resumed in-person in the fall. For the first time this month, junior high students moved from classroom to classroom as they would’ve in years past.

“It was a way to get closer to normal,” Smith said. “Teachers can stay in one room. They’re still in the same group of 20-25 kids, but they move. Other than that, we’re staying the course.”

About 15 percent of Forreston’s students are still in remote learning by choice, a number that has remained steady, Smith said.

Smith attributed the district’s success in keeping spread out of schools to up-front work done to allow for spacing and extra cleaning done by custodial staff.

The state moved into phase four and out of mitigations last week, allowing for after school activities like sports to resume.

“Absolutely it’s changed morale,” Smith said “To be with their friends more and having something to look forward to. It’s exciting for coaches.

There seems to be more excitement in the halls and it’s nice to hear basketballs bouncing after school.”

OREGON – Betty Adams, 92, of Oregon, passed away on January 22, 2021 in Oregon, Illinois.

She was born Betty Jean Petefish on November 20, 1928 in Jacksonville, Illinois to Ethel and Ivan Petefish.

She was raised on a farm and attended a one room school house until high school.

She attended Illinois Normal University Teachers College where she met her husband, Richard Adams at the Methodist fellowship leaf-raking day.

They married Sept. 5, 1948 and she worked to put him through his bachelors degree at Normal University.

He took various jobs as an industrial arts teacher and print shop operator while she spent long hours working office jobs and being a dutiful housewife.

When Richard was sent to Japan during the Korean War, Betty stayed alone working for a year and then decided to join him.

She crossed the Pacific to Tokyo on

MICHAEL ‘MIKE’ A. BOOMGARDEN FORRESTON – Michael “Mike” Allen Boomgarden, 65, of Forreston, died Wednesday January 20, 2021 at St. Anthony O.S.F., Rockford.

Mike was born February 18, 1955 in Rapid City, South Dakota, the son of LeRoy and Ilene (Suttman) Boomgarden.

Mike enjoyed being in the outdoors, riding his motorcycle, shooting, hunting, showing cattle, and doing farm work. He will be remembered as a great storyteller. Above all else, he loved his daughter.

Mike was a graduate of Highland Community College and Police Training Institute in Champaign. He worked in law enforcement for four decades, working for the Stephenson County Sheriff’s Department as Chief Deputy, and then as police chief in both Forreston and German Valley.

He was a former member of the Stephenson County Board. Mike was

a freighter and the two of them lived in the upstairs of a traditional Japanese family home in Higashi Nagasaki, miles from the military base.

Betty loved learning about people, and made lasting friendships with the Japanese. She taught English to employees at a Japanese bank.

After the army they resided for a while in Madison Wisconsin, faithful members of Trinity Methodist Church there. Richard then purchased a print shop in Minot, North Dakota where they lived for six years.

They then moved to Oregon, Illinois, where they made their permanent home in the wooded countryside.

Betty loved folks of all ages and would rather read a person than a book, although education was a huge priority.

She went back to college at Northern Illinois University to complete the needed two years for her bachelors in education in her 40s.

She joyously and passionately taught 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th graders in Ashton, for several years.

At retirement age Betty decided the best use of her skills was to promote and run a childrens wilderness camp on her own 11 acres.

Surviving is his mother, Ilene, of Mt. Morris; daughter, Katherine “Katie” Boomgarden of German Valley; Katie’s mother, Laura Hillman of German Valley; brother, Brian (Kathy) Boomgarden of Manitowoc, Wisconsin.; nephew, Cade (Mayra Moreno) Boomgarden; niece, Oriel (Eric) Combs; domestic partner, Sue Webber; and many other close friends.

Mike was preceded in death by his father, and his stepson, Chad Ford.

and teacher, she recruited staff and campers, raised scholarship money, set up activities and curriculum, tents and cook fires, and ran a successful camp for six years.

She then turned her attention to promoting the arts and founded along with Richard, The Fields Project, an annual retreat for artists who stayed with farm families that encompassed field art and an art show.

For her service to the arts, she was awarded the Studs Terkel Humanities Service Award from the Illinois Humanities Council in 2002.

Whenever Betty cared, she found a way to take action, making a difference through leadership in Rochelle’s Community Action Network, to mental health as member of the Ogle County Mental Health Association, to children as board chair of Oregon’s first nonprofit day care center and as a faithful Sunday school teacher through the years.

She served as executive director of the Oregon Chamber of Commerce and together with her husband Richard was recognized as an Oregon’s Citizen of the Year.

Betty is preceded in death by her husband, Richard H. Adams; mother, Ethel Walker Oliver (Petefish); father, Ivan

Petefish; and brother, Wendell Petefish.

She is survived by her son, Jeff Adams (Kathy); daughters, Martha Bohrer (Timothy) and Linda Adams (Charlie Schleevogt); five grandchildren, Jacob Adams, Greg and Anna Bohrer, and Michelle and Karl Schleevogt; and and two great-grandchildren, Solveig and Magnus Bohrer.

She found great joy in raising a family and in entertaining and educating her grandchildren.

She cared deeply for those she loved, and the circle was wide.

Betty’s most recent concern was for hungry families in the midst of the pandemic.

To address that concern the family will appreciate memorials to Lifeline Food Pantry of Oregon, Illinois in lieu of flowers.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, private family services will be held at Oregon United Methodist Church with Pastor Megan Smick officiating.

The service can be viewed on Saturday, Jan. 30 at 11 a.m. on Facebook live at the OUMC Facebook page.

OREGON – Darlene B. Jones, 92, a lifelong Oregon area resident, died Thursday, January 21, 2021 in Oregon Living & Rehabilitation Center.

She was born Aug. 5, 1928 in rural Sterling, the daughter of Clifford and Myrtle (Shoffner) Young.

She married Robert E. “Pete” Jones on Aug. 16, 1946 in Mt. Morris; he died July 25, 2002.

She was employed as a cook at White Pines Ranch, retiring in 1990 after 18 years of service.

Darlene was a friend to everyone, and enjoyed crocheting, making blankets for all the members of her family.

She was a member of the First Christian Church of Oregon and an active volunteer at Lifeline Food Pantry in Oregon.

She is survived by her sons, Ronald (Charlott) Young of Oregon and Clifford (Rhonda) Jones of Ashton;

40 years. Through the years, they served together in many pastorates including Arizona, Louisiana and Illinois.

They attended many conferences together listening to country music as they travelled as well as listening morning, noon and night. They were able to travel to the Grand Old Opry.

After the children were grown, Barbara went to work as a proofreader for religious publications. She still made time for crocheting and tea parties with the grandchildren.

ROCHELLE – Barbara Elayne Landry, 88 passed away Thursday, January 21, 2021 at Manor Court in Rochelle.

Barbara was born May 28, 1932, to Daniel C. and Louise (Rubsaman) Kump in Oregon. On Jan. 28, 1949 she married Gordon Landry of Hammond, Louisiana, at the East Oregon Chapel. He preceded her in death on Jan. 25, 2017, three days short of their 68th wedding anniversary.

Jan. 22 Anselmo Carranza-Sanchez, 22, of Rockford was arrested at 10:54 p.m. for driving on a revoked license, driving while under the influence of alcohol, aggravated driving while under the influence of alcohol, leaving the scene of a crash and other traffic citations after deputies, along with Rochelle Police Department were dispatched to Illinois 251 at Twombly Road for a hit and run accident.

Five new deaths, 127 new cases in the past week

jhelfrich@shawmedia.com The Ogle County Health Department reported 62 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, Jan. 26 totaling 4,633.

No Monday report was done by the OCHD and Tuesday’s was the first since Friday, Jan. 22. 127 new cases have come in the past week. Ages and locations of the individuals that test positive are not being released to protect their privacy.

The OCHD has reported five new deaths in the past week. Ogle County

has seen a total of 64 COVID-19 deaths since the start of the pandemic.

Recoveries of documented cases stand at 4,023, with no new ones reported Tuesday.

The Illinois Department of Public Health site said Tuesday that there are 1,510 cases in the zip code that includes Rochelle, Creston and White Rock.

Stillman Valley has 248 cases, Byron has 852 cases and Davis Junction has 285 cases.

Oregon and Mt. Morris have 598 and 249 cases, respectively.

Polo has 258 cases, Leaf River has 133 cases and Forreston has 186 cases.

The Sauk Valley as a whole saw 86 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday.

The Whiteside County Health Department announced 17 new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday as well as 107 recoveries.

The new cases involved one person under 20, three in their 20s, three in

their 30s, three in their 40s, three in their 50s, three in their 60s and one over the age of 80.

Lee County announced seven new cases Tuesday involving three people in their 20s, two in their 40s and two in their 70s.

Whiteside County has now vaccinated more than 1% of its population, hitting 1.03% with 572 people fully vaccinated and a total of 3,571 doses given. Ogle County has had 3,112 total doses and 566 people (1.11%) fully vaccinated. Lee County has had 2,625 total doses and 231 people (0.67%) fully vaccinated.

Peter W. Smith, 18, of Kings, was

arrested at 4:34 p.m. in lower Park West in the 1,400 block of Koontz Place. Smith was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Oregon Police Chief Shawn Melville said the call came from the park after Smith and a juvenile were allegedly going down a hill on a sled and inappropriate touching of

the minor occurred.

The juvenile was not a relative of Smith, Melville said.

“The victim told relatives and they contacted us,” Melville said.

“The subject was still on scene when we got there and was taken into custody and interviewed and jailed.”

Young America’s Foundation looks to preserve home

rrodgers@shawmedia.com DIXON – The Ronald Reagan Boyhood Home has a new caretaker, and officials are confident it’s in good hands.

The Young America’s Foundation has announced that it’s the new caretaker and owner of home and visitors center at 810 and 816 S. Hennepin Ave. in Dixon.

Since 1998, the YAF has owned Reagan’s 688-acre Rancho del Cielo in Santa Barbara, California, known as the Reagan Ranch and the only home he owned while president.

Pat Gorman, the boyhood home executive director, said he looks forward to a smooth transition and ongoing partnership with the YAF. “I am pleased to announce Young America’s Foundation has chosen to carry on the work we have been doing since 1980 to share Ronald Reagan’s life and legacy as a critical part of Dixon’s and America’s history,” Gorman said. “For the past year, in our discussions with YAF’s leadership, it was clear this was the right decision, not only financially, but also to secure the future of the home in Dixon for many years to come.”

The Ronald Reagan Home Preservation Foundation has owned the home, which was built in 1891, since 1980. It was there, in the 1920s, that Reagan spent his formative years in Dixon, which he always considered his hometown. Reagan was born in Tampico.

“All of us have to have a place we go back to. Dixon is that place for me. There was the life that has shaped my body and mind for all the years to come,” Reagan had said.

Gorman led a donation campaign during the last few years focused on funding repairs and renovations to the historic home and visitor’s center, following decades of deferred maintenance. They completed more than 100 upgrades, including projects during the summer after winning a $100,000 state grant.

Marilyn Shippert, president of the Ronald Reagan Home Preservation Foundation, said YAF will be a great asset in showcasing the home to future generations.

“In addition to the home’s availability to the public, the foundation will be promoting Reagan’s legacy along with the conservative values he learned as a young man in his hometown,” Shippert said. “I view this as a win for both our community and the values of Ronald Reagan.”

The nation’s leading conservative youth organization, YAF emphasizes the importance of Reagan’s belief that “there is a flickering spark in us all which, if struck at just the right age … can light the rest of our

lives,” YAF said in a news release.

In 1962, Reagan joined YAF’s National Advisory Board, eventually becoming the organization’s honorary national chairman. In 1974, the foundation sponsored a nationally syndicated radio program featuring Reagan as the then-California governor.

During each year of Reagan’s presidency, he hosted students attending YAF’s National Conservative Student Conference at the White House.

“It is my hope that by sharing the story of Ronald Reagan’s early years through his boyhood home in Dixon, we will give young people and all visitors a new appreciation for one of our nation’s greatest leaders and the values he learned and fought for,” said former Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, CEO and incoming president of YAF. As with the Reagan Ranch, YAF will preserve the home through private funding rather than through state or federal taxpayer dollars.

“Patriotic Americans in Dixon, Illinois, have done great work in preserving this important piece of American history for many decades,” YAF President Ron Robinson said. “Young America’s Foundation looks forward to a strong partnership with the Dixon community.

The involvement of the community in the Santa Barbara area is still strong more than two decades after YAF acquired the Reagan Ranch.

YAF plans to build on that model while we open this historic presidential site to visitors from across the country and around the world.”

Reagan’s son, Michael Reagan, said he was excited to see YAF acquiring the home.

“From the outset, they have done exemplary work preserving Dad and Nancy’s beloved ranch,” Reagan said. “They’ve stayed true to Dad’s values and beliefs and have always treated our family with the utmost respect. I trust YAF to bring the same care and professionalism to dad’s home in Dixon.”
