EVENT UPDATES Christmas food baskets a success The Polo Council of Churches Christmas basket delivery was a success thanks to all of the volunteers from the various churches involved.

Thanks to the people who donated money for the hams and loaves of bread from Sullivans in Mt Morris, the congregations who donated food and made sure it was delivered to the church for packing, and Deuth Farms for donating sausage we were able to deliver 98 bags of food with an additional 42 bags picked up.

All additional food was donated to the Polo Food Pantry.

A special thanks goes out to all the volunteers who delivered food to the church, who packed the bags, and helped with delivery and the pickup line, and delivering the extras to the pantry.

May God bless all those who received this community outreach.

Committee thanks donors This has been a challenging year for all, but each and everyone of you were such gracious givers to the Christmas Star Project.

The packages were wrapped beautifully and graciously received by the parents of 80+ chil-

dren. Thank you for helping to put a smile on a child’s face as they opened gifts from Santa.

Also, a big thank you to the First State Bank Shannon-Polo for having a Star Tree in their entry lobby and sharing on their facebook page. The volunteers working with the project were awesome!

BY KAREN MERLAK The ice cold air matches the icy patches on the ground for now. This past week was a treat for the eyes. The normal landscape dressed in layers of ice and snow makes enduring the winter’s chill more bearable.

For all the ways God has blessed us, we give our thanks.

This morning for church, Pastor Charlotte Hoppe presented a message on Facebook Live. She has returned from her time off and we are glad to have her back. You can join us live or watch the videos at a later time. Look for our church on Facebook.

On Saturday afternoon, I finally made it over to the old church building to go through some of our remaining teaching materials.

Brian Toms and Deb Ohlwine were there to move the items to the new building. It was good to see each other, even for just an afternoon.

This past Wednesday evening, I drove a small group of work friends over to Clinton, Iowa where we met our manager for dinner. We celebrated the end of my time as a supervisor in our department.

This week, I will start my semester of student teaching in Rockford. I am excited for the opportunity and look forward to spending time with the students. This last semester will present many new challenges. With the support of so many friends and family, I know I can face anything.

Stephanie and Matt both contacted me this past week with gratitude for the gifts I sent to them. I am really looking forward to seeing them all in a couple of months. We are being cautiously optimistic that this reunion will take place.

This past week of freezing fog created several days of winter beauty. Pictures of the crystals frozen to the empty tree limbs filled my Facebook feed.

In the later part of last summer, the same happened with a local sunflower field.

Many times friends will share pictures of flowers, fields, animals, or another aspect of nature. When we see beauty, we want others to see it, too. In nature, the beauty is always there. At times, we struggle to see beauty in our own world.

Then we look to the world God created, and there it is.

The past 10 months of pandemic navigation have been difficult. When I need-

ed a break, I would hop in my car and take a long drive. Here is northern Illinois, we have so much beauty around us. A drive in the evening with the vast night sky ahead reminds me that we are not alone.

Everywhere we look, we see and feel God’s presence. From the warmth of the sun in the summer to the perfectly crafted snowflakes of winter, our Creator has blessed us with a beautiful world.

Pastor Charlotte reminded me when I started back to school, that the challenges of work and school were part of a season. We know that a season only lasts for a short while and then it is gone for another year.

Even these difficult times won’t last forever. It is just another season.

In observing nature, we can see God’s beauty, His strength, His endurance and faithfulness, and His perfect timing. We are constantly reminded of His presence.

We only need to look at the world He created for us.

I hope to see you next Sunday on Facebook Live when Pastor Charlotte will lead us in a new service.

Soon, this season of physical separation will come to an end and a season of togetherness will begin.

No serious injuries to residents in Jan. 7 blaze in Polo

jhelfrich@shawmedia.com One apartment was destroyed after a building caught fire in Polo early last Thursday, Polo Fire Chief Tony Karrow said.

Fire crews were called at 4:15 a.m. to 709 E. Webster St. on Jan. 7 and found fire coming out of the back of one apartment. Most of the residents self-evacuated, Karrow said.

The building has two stories and eight apartments.

“Some had to go out a window in the back,” Karrow said. “We carried one person out. We put the fire out pretty quickly and kept it in the apartment it started in. We spent 1.5-2 hours overhauling it.”

Karrow said four or five residents were transported to KSB Hospital for smoke inhalation. The person who had to be carried out was on oxygen and “wasn’t hurt badly,” Karrow said. No firefighters were injured.

Six apartments sustained smoke damage. One had smoke and water damage. The apartment that burned is “destroyed, but repairable,” Karrow said. The owner of the apart-

There were no explosions and Karrow believes the fire was accidental and not suspicious. The state fire marshal has ruled the fire as unde-

Car of missing man found along bank of river

Officials concerned he may have “ended up” in the Rock River

jhelfrich@shawmedia.com A vehicle belonging to a missing Byron man was located on Jan. 6 in the 9,000 block of Illinois 2, north of Byron along the bank of the Rock River.

Brandon Cuddy, 27, of Byron, has been missing since Dec. 26, according to a Facebook page dedicated to locating him.

The Ogle County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the unoccupied

vehicle at 1:18 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 6 and determined it belonged to Cuddy.

The vehicle was “significantly” damaged and covered in snow, Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle said. It was located on the edge of a steep bank and only visible from the water.

“This is a situation that started as a missing persons case in Byron and now it’s a crash in our jurisdiction,” VanVickle said. “Our detectives are starting to move forward. At this point, due to significant damage to the car and not finding the driver, we’re concerned he may have ended up in the river due to the car’s proximity to it.”

The area of the river was searched Jan. 6 and 7 by the sheriff’s office and a boat from the Byron Fire

Department, VanVickle said. The banks of the river and the roadway were searched on foot and by a Winnebago County bloodhound.

All attempts to locate Cuddy and additional evidence were unsuccessful, VanVickle said.

Due to the snow on the vehicle, VanVickle believes it had been there since the evening of Dec. 26 when Cuddy went missing. Cell phone data provided by the family confirms that suspicion, VanVickle said.

The vehicle has since been removed from the area.

VanVickle said law enforcement investigators will continue to check the area in coming days. The colder temperatures will make additional river searches by boat and divers difficult, he said. A drone search

was also done in the initial search.

Byron Police Chief Todd Murray and his department had been conducting the investigation into Cuddy’s disappearance after he was reported missing Dec. 28.

Murray said his investigators spoke to multiple people about the night Cuddy went missing and reviewed a video posted by Cuddy that showed him driving on a highway after acquaintances said he was in Rockford earlier in the night.

“We were running out of leads before we found the car,” Murray said. “They said they hadn’t seen him since the night of Dec. 26. We had checked his phone. It showed he was in and around Byron. Within a mile of Byron was the last location

Murray said no evidence of Cuddy’s car leaving the roadway was perplexing.

“Generally there’s evidence something happened there,” Murray said. “There were no reports. It’s just odd there was no indication of any accident. Normally we see something.”

Murray said the investigation from here on our will be “a waiting game.”

“We’ll keep following up on leads about possible locations,” Murray said. “Otherwise, it’s river recovery. Depends on what happens there.”

LOCAL HISTORY

Dr. H. A. Mix’s home was an “elegant residence”

Home was located on the east bank of the Rock River

Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon has researched the people, places and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is one of a series of the articles he has written.

T

his information was published in the Nov. 14, 1872 edition of the Ogle County Reporter.

“The other day we visited the elegant residence where Dr. H. A. Mix will soon make his home. No pains or expense have been spared by the Doctor to make this a most tasty and complete private residence.

“It is situated on the west bank of the river, north of the Catholic Church, commanding beautiful views of the bluffs and river on the north, highlands on the east, the pine rocks, mills, bridges and town on the south, and of the river itself.

“A stone wall is being constructed along the river bank, earth filled in against it and terraced up to the building. The wall is substantial, as is all the masonry, and was laid by (Jr. John Hurbert).

“Along the north of the wall is terraced back for a croquet ground twelve feet above the river. Along the south part of the wall are built boat houses and a boat landing indicating the Dr’s intention to enjoy the river.

“From the boat landing stone steps ascend to the east porch. This porch is three stories high and twelve feet wide by forty in length, overlooking the river and will be a pleasant place to set the dinner table on a sultry summer day.

“The south end of the porch extends out beneath the overhanging branches of a fine old hickory tree, which shades a well house, where milk and butter may be kept in good condition.

“In the basement are the kitchen, living room, bath room, cellar, fuel room, pantry and china closet. On the principal floor, a recessed porch on the west opens into a hall twelve feet square, in which are coat closets and doors opening into the principal apartments and staircase.

“There are two parlors on the east connected by sliding doors and

opening into a plaza, commanding an extended view of the river. A library on the south west connects with the hall parlors and has a private entrance to a balcony on the south, while a sleeping room on the north-west completes the principal floor.

“The chamber plan contains four eloquent sleeping rooms and the attic five.

“The house is built of brick, two story Gothic style in architecture, planned by G. O. Guernsey of Chicago and executed by Henry Peers, one of our ablest and best mechanics, who is making this first class job and the manner in which he is doing it, indicated that he knows just how to do this kind of work.

“The plastering is particularly fine glistens like marble. Center

pieces decorate the ceilings. Credit Davis and Laughlin, the plasterers whose work cannot be surpassed here or elsewhere.

“The view from the roof is very pleasing overlooking as it does the whole of beautiful Oregon with its majestic encircling bluffs.”

I’ll mention once more the wording in these early stories is very interesting.

LOCAL HISTORY

efore the box of the history is taken to the museum, there are a few more interesting stories. (I had the whole history of the Presbyterian Church strung out in my living room a few weeks ago and I had to condense it to fit in our files.)

I had liked the story of the bells placed in the churches in Buffalo Grove and the bell placed in the church in Polo.

If you remember the ladies of the new Independent Presbyterian Church held a very successful money maker in Buffalo Grove and decided to buy a bell for the church.

The problem was that they did not own a church to put it in. They used the Methodist church building and they really wanted to hear a bell ring in Buffalo Grove.

So they decided to put the bell in the building they were using and it would be the property of the town. The bell could ring for any occasion in the town. It evidently had a beautiful sound and impressed V. B. Webster who wrote this history in 1888. I was glad he placed his name on this history and dated it.

So the bell was in the Methodist Church in Buffalo Grove. The day came when the new Methodist Church was built in Polo and of course they wanted to take the church bell with them. People left in Buffalo Grove said, “No!” When the bell was removed, ready to go to Polo, someone removed the clapper which resulted in

much discussion. As a result the bell remained in Buffalo Grove or Old Town so the beautiful tones could go out over the little community that remained in the settlement.

It was a struggle while the church was being built and they met in Williams Hall on the part of Mason Street called Becker Block. They also met in Mosher Hall on Division Street. Finally the basement was finished and the ladies again held a festival for a bell. It was July 4, 1856.

They raised $153.00 but no bell was purchased.

It had to go for the finishing of the church.

On August 7, 1857 the church building of the Independent Presbyterian church was completed and dedicated. The first pew rental receipts were dated January of 1857 for $65 for the right of occupancy.

Five men who were trustees signed the receipts.

Zenas Aplington had a very clear signature as trustee.

jhelfrich@shawmedia.com The Polo City Council voted Monday to make a $175,000 offer on the CedarStone building at 610 S. Division Ave. The city was under contract to purchase the property for $229,000 late last year before the deal expired due to the building being tied up in bankruptcy proceeds.

In recent weeks the city looked into leasing or buying other locations closer downtown due to opinions heard from citizens.

At its Jan. 4 meeting, Dustin Finkle addressed the council and offered to build a city hall that the city would lease at 107 W. Colden St. The council also discussed purchasing and tearing down the Daws buildings at 108, 106 and 104 W. Mason St. and building on the site.

[Finkle] building it for us to lease is kind of a gray area. The lease wouldn’t have gone towards a potential purchase price.”

The leasing route would have cost the city around $25,000 a year, according to figures thrown out at a recent meeting. The Daws route would have cost $120,000 to buy those buildings before demolition.

Knapp said he’s unsure if the CedarStone offer will be accepted.

In the latest offer, the city opted for a later closing date in May. Previous offers were set to close within a month. Knapp said the city wants to make sure everything is in line, especially if there’s bankruptcy paperwork left to do on the seller’s side.

The city has discussed multiple options of paying for CedarStone, including all of it coming out of the general fund, splitting the cost between all funds and taking out a loan. Knapp said he doesn’t anticipate the city will take out a loan.

The city plans to send its engineers to Cedarstone to do an inspection in coming weeks.

At the Jan. 4 meeting, Alderman Justin Grobe said he’d heard that there may be another buyer for the building to potentially put a business in it. Knapp said he’s unsure of that.

“It is for sale and we didn’t want to be challenged on it,” Knapp said.

“Maybe we went into it too quickly the first time. We’ll have more caution this time.”

It’s not looking good for prep football, basketball L

ast week, the IHSA and IESA (junior high) met with the Illinois Department of Public Health and a representative from the Governor’s office. The purpose of the meeting was to determine the feasibility of getting sports up and running.

The IHSA and IESA presented its case for reintroducing sports. It also asked the public health department to lower the risk level on some sports.

“We believe that there is both data and science that validates the idea that we can safely conduct sports,” said IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson. “We have seen it work in other states and believe it can in Illinois if we utilize the mitigations provided by IDPH and the IHSA SMAC. Students are already leaving or participating outof-state on weekends. We believe that competing for their high school remains the safest venue for participation.”

All IHSA sports remain on pause at the moment.

Low risk sports may not begin until the state returns to Phase 4 in the All Sports Policy.

The IHSA Board of Directors are scheduled to meet again this week.

Basketball and football, long the primary sports for the IHSA, are considered high risk and look to be in big trouble.

As Anderson says, “With the calendar shrinking, putting together a puzzle that allows for all

sports to be played becomes increasingly improbable.”

Indeed, time is running out. Football blew it when they opted to move the season to spring instead of playing in the fall like neighboring states did.

Likewise with basketball being shelved.

“We have seen it work in other states and believe it can in Illinois if we utilize the mitigations provided by IDPH and the IHSA,” Anderson said. “Students are already leaving or participating out-of-state on weekends.

Back in October, basketball and other winter sports were given the green light by the IHSA to begin play.

Shortly afterwards, the plan was changed to make it a school-by-school decision after pressure

from the IDPH and Governor Pritzer.

On Nov. 17, winter sports were put on a “pause” by the IHSA will no timetable for starting up.

If the IHSA truly believes it can conduct winter sports like other states are doing, why aren’t they?

Because there are political and legal ramifications in this state that have stymied the IHSA, who are damned if they do, damned if they don’t.

The IHSA is making every effort possible on behalf of the student athletes of Illinois and credit to them for doing so.

Even in a normal year, this organization feels tons of pressure.

Bottom line, it ain’t looking good folks. January 2021 isn’t any different than the start of the school year in August.

When football was postponed, decision-makers in Illinois gambled on COVID-19 being less of a problem later in the school year. Wrong.

One ray of hope is that baseball, softball, and track could be contested, much the same way low risks like golf and cross country were in the fall.

Other activities are medium and high risk and on shaky ground.

That would be some sort of poetic justice, in that those three spring sports didn’t get a chance last year.

In 1858 Rev. William E. Holyolk accepted the call to the church and his work began. He would be there seven years. By 1859 the pew rent receipts were $100 for William E. Mason. It did not specify how long the rental fee was good for.

In the fall of 1860 a new bell was selected for the church in Polo and it was placed in the proper spot on Nov. 6 which happened to be Election Day. When the news arrived in Polo concerning Abraham Lincoln’s election, the bell rang publicly for the first time.

This seemed fitting for a church that was so against slavery. It would later toll for the death of President Lincoln.

One other item I found in the box was a large piece of very old wall paper that had been saved all these years. Obviously it had been saved for a reason and I am waiting for a time when I can walk through the church to see where wall paper might have been used.

I miss Christina and our talks about the history of the church.

Kinzinger to vote for impeachment

Congressman says President “broke his oath of office”

krettke@shawmedia.com U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Channahon, said Jan. 12 that he will vote to impeach President Donald J. Trump on the grounds that the president “broke his oath of office” and “incited this insurrection” when a mob of pro-Trump rioters sieged the Capitol building Jan. 6.

“There is no doubt in my mind that the President of the United States broke his oath of office and incited this insurrection,” Kinzinger said in a statement.

With his announcement, Kinzinger became the third House Republican to state their support of impeachment proceedings brought against the president.

The president faces a single impeachment charge, incitement to insurrection, for his actions surrounding the mob attack on the Capitol, the worst domestic assault on the building in the nation’s history.

Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming, the third-ranking House Republican, and Republican Rep. John Katko of New York said earlier on Tuesday that they would vote to impeach Trump.

Kinzinger also was the first Republican in Congress last week to address Trump’s insurrection as

an act worthy of implementing the 25th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, by which the president would be removed from office, with Vice President Mike Pence assuming the role until President-elect Joe Biden is inaugurated Jan. 20.

Officials, residents working to save Exelon plant

jhelfrich@shawmedia.com The number of “Save the Plant” signs around Byron has made Mayor John Rickard more confident about his community’s future.

Exelon plans to close the Byron Nuclear Plant in September, but community officials and residents have been working to change that. A committee composed of taxing body leaders was established and state representatives and Congressman Adam Kinzinger have been trying to change Exelon’s mind.

“It’s organized us to make our case,” Rickard said. “Rallying support for that has been easy. Action hasn’t happened in Springfield yet, but they had no fall veto session.

We’re gearing up for legislative action in the spring.”

Illinois AFL-CIO, composed of 1,500 affiliated unions, recently released an economic impact analysis of closing the Byron plant as well as the Dresden plant in Morris. The report claimed the Byron and Dresden plants prevent 20 million metric tons of CO2 emission each year and closing prematurely as planned would cause Illinois consumers and businesses to pay $313 million more annually for electricity, or $3.1 billion more over a decade.

The report also said the Byron and Dresden nuclear power plants employ more than 1,500 full-time employees and 2,000 supplemental workers during refueling outages, most from local union halls.

“This new report shows what the Illinois AFL-CIO and countless other organizations have long known: nuclear plants are the backbone of communities throughout Illinois,” AFL-CIO President Tim Drea said.

The four Illinois nuclear plants, (Byron, Braidwood, Dresden and LaSalle) account for over 28,000 in-state jobs, contribute about $3.5 billion annually to state gross domestic product, maintain an estimated $149 million in annual Illinois state tax revenues and save consumers $483 million on their electricity bills every year, the AFL-CIO claimed.

“It affirms what we know,” Rickard said of the report. “The huge economic impact on the area as well as the CO2 impact making it more difficult for the state to meet its goals. The economic impact on

Byron itself hasn’t been drilled down to, but it’s $38 million a year in Ogle County. 100 of those jobs live in Byron. Losing all those and their income and taxes they pay and money they spend, the economic loss to Byron could be significant.”

Rickard said the planned closure of the plant has been a wake up call and would be “detrimental” to Byron.

Ogle County Board Chairman John Finfrock said he hopes the state legislature sees its being shortsighted in allowing the plant to close. The county board recently passed a resolution in support of the plant staying open.

“We’ve done a study,” Finfrock said. “It’s going to hurt quite heavily. Monies we’ll be losing will be hard to replace. It’s a third of our revenue, $4.2 million yearly. A

heavy revenue hit.”

Finfrock said the county would have to look for new revenue to replace funds from the plant and it likely wouldn’t find it, which would force budget cuts. The recent completion of the Ogle County Judicial Center Annex may be the county’s last project for a while.

“We couldn’t keep doing what we’re doing now,” Finfrock said.

“We’re not looking for bigger or large projects in the near future after this one.”

Finfrock said optimism on the plant staying open depends on who you talk to.

“People are saying it looks better because people are trying to save it,” Finfrock said. “Hopefully it will work. I don’t understand how you can take away two plants and meet the goals the state wants to meet.”

Ogle County cases are up to 4,405 as of Jan. 12

jhelfrich@shawmedia.com The Ogle County Health Department reported 22 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, Jan. 12 totaling 4,405.

Seventy cases were reported over the weekend. 210 new cases have come in the past week. Ages and locations of the individuals that test positive are not being released to protect their privacy.

The OCHD has reported five new deaths in the past week. Ogle Coun-

ty has seen a total of 59 COVID-19 deaths since the start of the pandemic.

Recoveries of documented cases stand at 3,781, with 139 new ones reported Tuesday.

The Illinois Department of Public Health site said Tuesday that there are 1,432 cases in the zip code that includes Rochelle, Creston and White Rock.

Stillman Valley has 234 cases,

Byron has 826 cases and Davis Junction has 273 cases.

Oregon and Mt. Morris have 556 and 229 cases, respectively.

Polo has 240 cases, Leaf River has 122 cases and Forreston has 175 cases.

The Sauk Valley as a whole saw two deaths and 61 new cases.

The Whiteside County Health Department announced an additional COVID-related death on Tuesday

involving a person in his or her 60s, as well as 16 new cases and 200 additional recoveries.

The new cases involve five people under 20, four in their 20s, three in their 40s, two in their 50s and two over the age of 80. The 442 current active cases in Whiteside County is the lowest since late October.

The Lee County Unified Leadership team reported a COVID-related death of a woman in her 50s.

He competes yearly at Mt. Morris’ straw sculpting competition. His bills are paid by his work as a bronze sculptor.

Volz’ most recent work is a mermaid made of snow that resides inside the gazebo in downtown Rochelle. His snow sculpting experience spans 30 years in competitions in Rockford and Chicago.

“I was looking for a place with shade,” Volz said. “Once the sun hits it, it deteriorates. I got permission from the city. Since it was only 1.5 inches of snow, I wondered if I should even do it.

Usually you need 3-5 inches. It’s all snow from the ground.”

Volz started on the sculpture on Jan. 3 and finished on Jan. 7.

The mermaid was just constructed for entertainment and isn’t part of any competition.

The most recent snowfalls made for good sculpting, despite low accumulation. The snow and rain mix made for a barrier between the grass and the latest snowfall, which made for clean snow for Volz.

Volz’ process included packing snow into a plywood box coated in wax and making 30 15-inch cubes.

“I stacked them to her eight-foot height,” Volz said. “Then I start carving away. I use a lot of homemade tools as well as kitchen utensils and gardening tools.”

Volz came up with the mermaid idea after looking online. He custom made his own style and pose.

“I always come up with something,” Volz said. “I love the human form and sculpting the human body. The mermaid was fun. It’s fantasy and I can use my imagination.”

The North region (Boone, Carroll, DeKalb, Jo Daviess, Lee, Ogle, Stephenson, Whiteside and Winnebago

counties) has seen 11 consecutive days under the 12% positivity rate.

The region’s positivity rate decreased to 9.1%. Currently, 28.4% of medical/surgical beds are available and 25.1% of ICU beds.

The region has 11 consecutive days above the 20% threshold for ICU bed availability, and 11 consecutive days above the 20% threshold for medical/surgical bed availability.

Within this region, DeKalb County’s positivity rate decreased to 11.2%, Lee County’s rate decreased

to 2.3%, Ogle County’s rate decreased to 10.8%, and Whiteside County’s rate decreased to 8.0%.

Hospitalizations have decreased six out of the past 10 days in this region.

Finally, within this region, there are 51 available, staffed ICU beds out of 179 total, and 249 ventilators out of 343 available.

Illinois on Tuesday announced 6,642 new cases and 117 deaths.

There have been 1,040,168 cases and 17,743 deaths statewide.

The first residential electronic recycling drop-off in Ogle County is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 29, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the County Annex Building, 909 Pines Road in Oregon.

Free permits are required in advance for this recycling event.

The permits may be obtained by calling 815-732-4020 or email solidwaste@oglecounty.org with your name, street address, and town.

This recycling event is for Ogle

County residents only and proof of residency is required in addition to the free permit.

The permit is good for the event in which you sign up for, and allows a resident to bring in a maximum of seven large or bulky items for recycling. Limit one permit per residence per month.

This recycling event may be cancelled or suspended due to the pandemic, inclement weather, or staffing issues at the discretion of the Ogle County Solid Waste Management Department (OCSWMD).

Items accepted at these recycling events include all residential televi-

sions, computer monitors, computers, computer hardware and cables, printers, FAX machines, desktop copiers, VCR/ DVD players, satellite and cable boxes, video gaming equipment, remote controls (remove batteries), cell phones, tablets, laptop computers, radios, stereo equipment (no large wooden speakers), shredders, digital clocks, calculators, adding machines, phones and phone systems, rechargeable batteries, printer toner cartridges, CFL bulbs, extension cords, and holiday light strands.

Illinois State Police District 1 Commander, Captain Matthew Hodgdon, has announced activity and enforcement figures for 2020.

Troopers in District 1, which includes Carroll, Lee, Ogle and Whiteside Counties, recorded 9,836 incidents during the year.

In addition, enforcement figures totaled 4,313 citations and 3,686 written warnings, including 2,529 speeding citations, 51 DUI arrests, 303 occupant restraint citations, 201 distracted driving citations, 48 move over (Scott’s Law) citations,

1,015 written warnings for speeding, and 142 criminal arrests.

Troopers conducted 628 Motor Carrier Safety Inspections with 74 being placed out of service for safety violations.

Additionally, troopers conducted 78 portable scale details, which resulted in 70 overweight citations and 86 overweight warnings being issued. District 1 handled 233 traffic crashes and assisted 1,253 motorists.

During the year, 3,084 citations were issued for “Fatal Four” violations. These violations are most associated with fatal traffic crashes and include speeding, DUI, failure to wear a seat belt and distracted

driving.

Monthly Activity for December Illinois State Police District 1 Troopers issued 212 citations, 289 written warnings, and made 13 criminal arrests during the month of December.

Speeding accounted for 117 citations, and seven citations were issued for distracted driving violations.

Troopers investigated 27 traffic crashes, assisted 106 motorists, and conducted 54 commercial vehicle inspections, 13 of which were placed out-of-service for safety reasons. There were 3 arrests for driving while under the influence.

FORRESTON – Alice (Albert) Akins passed away January 4, 2021 in her home surrounded by her loving family.

She was born Oct. 7, 1931 in rural Polo, the daughter of William Albert, Jr., and Anna Mary (Wolfensberger) Albert.

Alice married Jim Akins on April 8, 1951. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church of Forreston, Forreston Lions Club, Forreston Friendship Club, and Forreston American Legion Auxiliary.

She and her husband Jim were very big supporters of the National Audubon Society, and was instrumental in the development of the Elk Horn Creek Biodiversity Nature Preserve.

She delivered Meals on Wheels, tutored for the Highland College Literacy program, and was a hospice volunteer for many years.

She was a mentor at the Forreston Grade School and a volunteer at the Forreston Pantry. She enjoyed playing cards with her family and many of her friends.

She loved each and every one of her family, and they were all very important to her.

Survivors include five children, Kriss Mulder of German Valley, Jesse (Jody) Akins of Forreston, Kathy Wilken of Adeline, Jean Diamond of Springfield, and Joe (Brenda) Akins of Forreston; 17 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; sister, Leona (Dale) Wilken of German Valley; two brothersin-law, John (Wilma) Akins and Jeff Akins both of Forreston; and God-daughter Julialyn Shedd of Malta.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; three sons-in-law, Mike Mulder, Dave Diamond, and Loran Wilken; grandson, Jamie Campbell; and someone very special, Shiloh Balluff.

Funeral services were Jan. 9 at Burke Tubbs Funeral Home, Forreston. Burial was at White Oak Cemetery.

ROSEMARY CRAIG POLO – Rosemary Craig, 88, of Polo, passed away Wednesday, January 6, 2021, at Polo Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center.

Rosemary was born Dec. 26, 1932, in Freeport, the daughter of Oliver and Gladys (Saxby) Piefer. On Nov. 10, 1951, she was united in marriage to Donald

Craig.

Rosemary enjoyed volunteering with the Polo United Methodist Church, helping with their newsletters. In her early years she and her family enjoyed going to the lake, spending time together and doing her puzzles.

Survivors include her daughter, Linda (Wayne) Crackenberger of Pearl City; sons, Charles Craig of Dixon and Michael Craig of Polo; sister, Lois DeGarmo of Freeport;sister-in-law Donna Schriner of Milledgeville; brother-in-law, Robert Toms of Dixon; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald; and sisters, Darlene Toms and Betty O’Brian.

A private service will be held with burial at Fairmount Cemetery in Polo, where she will be laid to rest next to her husband.

BERNARD “BERNIE” J. EMPEN FORRESTON – Bernard “Bernie” John Empen, 86, of Forreston, passed away Friday, January 8, 2021 at Manor Court, Freeport.

He was born Aug. 23, 1934 in Ashton, the son of Bernard A. and Josephine (Burken) Empen. He married Iris O’Hare in Polo on June 28, 2008.

He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army Reserves.

He worked as a dairy farmer for many years. Later he was employed by Swiss Valley Farms, Vet Way, and Eastland Feeds.

He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Polo, for 77 years, Forreston Lions Club where he served as Past President, Ogle County Farm Bureau, and A.M.P.I. Bernie was also chairman for Forreston Hometown Days and ran the game clock for 25 years for Forreston football games. He was an avid Chicago Bears and Cubs fan. He was a proud member of the table of knowledge. Above all else, Bernie cared deeply about his family.

Surviving are three sons, Jon (Margo) Empen of Dixon, Dan (Lisa) Empen of Lake Villa, and Daryl (Cynthia) Empen of Rock Island; daughter, Laurie Empen of

Chicago; three stepsons, Michael (Joni) O’Hare of Stillman Valley, Tim (Lynn) O’Hare of Byron and Jim (Kelly) O’Hare of Stillman Valley; two brothers, Joe Empen of Forsyth and Ron (Pat) Empen of Winnebago; four sisters, Rosemary, O.P. Empen of Footville, Wisconsin., Shirley (Jack) Modjallal of Encino, California., Phyliss Gibson of Madison, Wisconsin., and Carol Glenn of Milledgeville. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Nils and Ian Empen and Cade and Carter, Empen.

Bernie was preceded in death by his parents.

GARY L. PARKE POLO – Gary L. Parke, 87, of Polo, passed away Friday, January 8, 2021, at his home with family by his side.

Gary was born Dec. 17, 1933, in Chicago, the son of Dewey and Joyce (Miller) Parke. He married his wife Nancy on Sept. 1, 1957 in Sycamore.

Gary was a veteran of the US Army.

After the service, he worked for over 20 years in the shoe making industry, working for both Florsheim and Freeman Shoe Co. in Dixon.

Gary then went to work for Imeco in Polo and after 18 years he retired.

He was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Polo. Gary enjoyed sports, especially the St. Louis Cardinals and was an avid bowler for many years.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy; daughters Pam (John) White of Polo, Stephanie (Roger) Wagner of Franklin Grove, Susan (August) Pehlke of Dixon and Siri Pardo of Dekalb; sons Keith Parke of Polo, Howard (Kaye) Parke of Hardeeville, South Carolina and Gregory Parke of Fort Myers, Florida; 17 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Parke; three brothers, Richard, Kenneth and Dale; and grandson, Jeremiah Parke.

A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.

RICHARD C. “DICK” PETERSON MT. MORRIS – Richard C. “Dick” Peterson, 93, passed away on January 5, 2021 in Pinecrest Manor Nursing Home, in Mt. Morris.

Dick was born on July 1, 1927 in Evanston, the son of Carl and Ann (Verboten) Peterson.

He married Mary Jo Addis on July 14, 1955 in Evanston and she preceded him in death on May 14, 1997.

Dick was in the Army in the final years of World War II stationed in Texas. He loved sharing stories of his perpetually shaky hands and target practice in the Army. He couldn’t hit the side of a barn, but had other skills to make him valuable to the Army.

He and Mary Jo left Northbrook and moved to Mt. Morris in 1987. They had come to visit Lori at White Pines Ranch for many years and fell in love with the area.

After purchasing the former home of the Kable family at the Sunset Golf Course , it became the Kable House Country Inn bed and breakfast and they operated it for 23 years.

During this time, he was involved with the Chamber of Commerce and organized many fund raising dinners and pork chops for the Mt. Morris Kiwanis.

Dick was an avid bowler from an early age. He bowled professionally for a time, and eventually owned his own bowling alley, Lake Forest Lanes in Lake Forest.

He loved the bowling alley and made friends with professional athletes of the time as they practiced in Lake Forest, and followed up with a beer at the bowling alley.

He spent his last 8 years at Pinecrest Manor. Pinecrest became a home and a family to Dick. They loved him, cared for him, and cried for him at his passing.

Dick loved telling stories and made all kinds of small events into funny tales.

He loved his family and his grandchildren, and will be missed by all.

ANDREW J. TETZLAFF GEORGETOWN, Ind. - Andrew John (“Andy”) Tetzlaff died on January 8, 2021, in Georgetown, Indiana. Born on May 18, 1930 in Albion, Nebraska, he was 90 years old.

He was preceded in death by Dora May (McGrew) Tetzlaff, his wife for almost 66 years.

Andy had a remarkable life, one which mirrored much of the American experience in the 20th Century: born on a small farm in the Midwest, losing that family farm in the Great Depression, being drafted into the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, getting married to the love of his life, and raising six healthy children.

The child of Herman and Emma Lind Tetzlaff, Andy was one of six children: Oscar, Art (his twin brother), Velma, Elsie and Esther. He spent most of his young life in rural Nebraska and was from “strong German stock.”

Andy had vivid recollections of growing up during the Great Depression. His clearest memory from his childhood is “the first man in a suit” that he’d ever seen: the banker who came to repossess their farm.

Without the family farm, they were forced to move to a tiny house in nearby Petersburg, Nebraska, where his mother

raised chickens and grew vegetables in a struggle to feed their family.

The challenging situation worsened when his father suddenly passed away; Andy was in junior high school at the time.

In 1946, while in high school, Andy was a passenger in a tragic car accident. Six people were in the car, the driver and three passengers died. One passenger was seriously injured.

Andy, according to newspaper accounts at the time, was “cut and bruised.” The vehicle “hit the concrete abutment on the left-hand side of the road, after coming down a grade, and rolled down a 10-foot bank into a ravine.”

In the brutal cold of a Nebraska winter in early February, Andy (then 16 years old) “crawled up the bank onto a gravel road to flag down a passing car.” For years, Andy would not speak of this accident to anyone. Only in his latter years did he discuss this tragedy.

Despite these challenges, Andy graduated from Petersburg High School and went on to college, getting his teaching degree from Nebraska State Teachers College at Kearney, Nebraska. He was soon working as a teacher.

Andy and Dora May met at a small school in Bartlett, Nebraska, where both were young teachers. As Dora May recounted it, she was teaching a music class when a “handsome stranger” walked in and joined in the singing.

His beautiful voice - a hallmark during Andy’s entire life - was one of many things which captivated Dora May. They were soon dating; they married in Orleans, Nebraska, on March 1, 1952.

Music remained a bond throughout their marriage as they performed together, he singing, she playing the piano.

Both continued teaching until Andy was drafted into the military. Andy served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, retiring as a sergeant. When he left the military, he felt a “calling” to become a minister and enrolled at the Seminary at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois.

Andy had a gift for preaching rivaled only by his gift for singing, and - after several “student pastor” assignments - was given his first parish shortly after graduation.

He spent nearly 10 years at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Altona, Illinois. In 1967, he accepted a calling at St. Marks Evangelical Lutheran Church in Polo, where he preached until his retirement.

Their first children were twins, Jay and Sheila. Within just a few years, they had two more children, Stephanie and Jonathan, so they had four preschoolers simultaneously.

In the following years, Clark and Andrew were born. When Andrew started first grade, Dora May returned to teaching for many years, focusing in the Special Education area.

Struggling to support six children on a limited income, Andy and Dora May still managed to provide college educations for all.

They were also able to plan for retirement by purchasing a small plot of land on Paulsen Lake in northwestern Wisconsin, paying cash from their meager savings.

Over several years, with multiple eight-hour drives between Polo, Illinois, and Osceola, Wisconsin, they built what became known as “The Log Home” on the property, doing much of the labor themselves.

They also had the invaluable assistance of Max Donaldson, the father-inlaw of their daughter Sheila.

They lived in their beloved Log Home in Wisconsin for 30 years, the only home they ever owned. Their prior residences were rentals or parsonages.

Andy worked as a substitute pastor during his many decades in Wisconsin, enjoying preaching in many churches throughout the northwestern part of that state.

For 13 years, Andy and Dora May were “snow birds” for several months each year in Mesa, Arizona. During the winter months, Andy was the pastor at a small church in a retirement community near Mesa.

Shortly after Dora May passed away

in 2017, Andy moved to an assisted living facility in southern Indiana, near the home of his daughter, Sheila. Sheila’s tireless support during his final years was invaluable.

Andy was a man of strong opinions, and he expressed them openly over his lifetime. As a small-town minister in the rural Midwest, his vocal support in the 1960s for the ministry of the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., was not always popular.

Similarly, his strongly-expressed opposition to the Vietnam War and his support of campaigns to ban nuclear weapons were also controversial to some parishioners and townspeople.

Andy and Dora May vocally and financially supported minorities, Native Americans, the lesbian/gay community and others suffering injustice, discrimination or oppression.

Andy is survived by all six of his children, along with six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by Dora May, the love of his life during nearly 66 years of marriage; she passed away in February 2017.

He is also preceded in death by all five of his siblings.

Andy and Dora May lived in Asheville, North Carolina, for four months in 2015-16 near their son Jonathan C. Tetzlaff. With their son, they were regular attendees at Asheville’s Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church.

Because of risks related to COVID-19, no memorial service will be scheduled at present.

In coming months, however, we will be establishing a date for such a service, which will be held at Grace Covenant. All will be welcome to attend and celebrate Andy’s life.

The family would like to thank the skilled caregivers at The Villas at Guerin Woods, Georgetown, Indiana, for their care and dedication in Andy’s final years.

Jan. 6 Tya Ru, 24, of Milwaukee was arrested for driving while license revoked after being stopped by deputies on Illinois 251 near Davis Junction for speeding. Ru was released on a I-bond and will appear in court at a later date.

Daniel Dawson, 38, of Blue Springs, Missouri was arrested on an outstanding failure to appear warrant when he turned himself in to the Ogle County Jail.
