CHURCH CHALLENGE Dixon church donates $5,000 to Stronghold

Pastor asks others to donate in challenge for Stronghold center

Each area presbyterian church has its own “Stronghold story.”

The Oregon faith-based camp and retreat center has hosted many events over the years for people in the area, but it won’t be this year due to COVID-19. Stronghold has had to cancel its summer camp and the nonprofit has lost thousands in revenue.

Pastor David Spaulding of the First Presbyterian Church of Dixon came to Stronghold’s aid this week, donating $5,000 and creating the “Stronghold challenge.”

One of Spaulding’s elders called him recently and asked what could be done to help Stronghold.

“We met and put a three-pronged approach together,” Spaulding said. “We looked at our budget and saw we had some money for day camps and camp scholarships. We decided to send it to Stronghold anyways and looked at some more money and approved a gift of $5,000.

Congregation members were also asked to consider giving to the camp as part of the plan.

“We also wanted to ask other churches and more to give, which is the Stronghold challenge,” Spaulding said.

Darion Brown, 29, of Rockford,was cited at 3 a.m. for driving while license revoked, fleeing to elude, operating an uninsured motor vehicle and speeding after deputies attempted to stop a motorcycle for speeding on Illinois 64 near Woodlawn Road.

Brown failed to stop and continued eastbound on Illinois 64 at a high rate of speed.

the Blackhawk Presbytery and is operated primarily as a ministry of the presbytery.

“I would encourage you to consider what you can do,” Spaulding said. “So next year we can have a joyful year here at Stronghold.”

Brown refused treatment from the Malta Fire Dept. firefighters who assisted at the scene.

Dekalb County Sheriff’s deputies assisted at the scene with the accident investigation.

Brown was released on an I-bond and was transported by a family member to the hospital for treatment with non-life threatening injuries.

At 9:09 a.m., police responded to a two-vehicle traffic crash at the intersection of 5th and Webster Streets involving a 2014 Ford driven by Robert J. Wilson, Jr., 73, of Oregon, and a 2019 Buick driven by Johnie E. Mudge, 70, of Oregon. Wilson was issued a citation for failure to yield.

Richard E. Sheidler, 74, of Mt. Morris, was issued a citation at 9:41 p.m. for operating in violation of restriction. This violation occurred in the 1000 block of W. Washington Street.

At approximately 6:13 a.m. deputies responded to a motorcycle accident with an injury. Upon arrival, deputies learned a 2015 Yamaha motorcycle was driven by Devin Messenger, 21, of Oregon. Messenger was southbound on River Road when he locked his brakes up in the roadway to avoid deer.

Messenger then laid the motorcycle down in the roadway before coming to rest. Messenger was transported to Swedish American Hospital by Byron EMS for non-life threatening injuries.

At 7:42 p.m., police investigated a two-vehicle traffic crash in the 100 block of N. 4th Street involving a 2013 Chevrolet driven by Dale G. Grote, Jr., 73, of Chana, and a parked 2017 Jeep belonging to Dyan L. Mowry, 45, of Oregon.

Grote was issued citations for improper backing, and failure to give information after striking an unattended vehicle.

July 2

At 10:30 a.m., police investigated a two-vehicle traffic crash at 401 S. 4th Street involving a 2019 Dodge driven by Elizza L. Easley, 17, of Oregon, and a parked 2018 Ford owned by the City of Oregon Water Department. No citations were issued.

Peralta-Cazales was also issued a citation for speeding and released on an I-Bond.

July 5

At 2:10 p.m., deputies stopped a blue Dodge Ram truck that was observed driving outside of its traffic lane. After further investigation, the driver of the vehicle, Christopher Kingrey, 46, of Rockford, was arrested for driving while license suspended. Kingrey was also issued a citation for Improper lane usage and released on an I-Bond. • Gary and Shirley J. Holderness, also Leckey, to Karen A. Tomasz D. Kowalski, 40, of Norridge, was issued a citation at 4:13 p.m. for speeding, 55 mph in a 35 mph zone. This violation occurred in the 1300 block of Pines Road.

Richard W. Wiesner, Jr., 51, of Oregon, was issued a citation at 8:36 p.m. for disobeying a traffic control device. This violation occurred at the intersection of N. 3rd and Franklin Streets.

Alyssa M. Trotter, 27, of Polo, was issued citations at 9:30 p.m. for improper lane usage and failure to properly secure a child under age 8 in an appropriate restraint system. These violations occurred at the intersection of W. Washington and Illinois Streets.

Christine M. McCaslin, 60, of Oregon, was arrested at 11 p.m. for theft, more than $500 that had occurred earlier in the evening at the Oregon Laundromat located at 210 S. 4th Street. McCaslin was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

July 5

William W. Storms, 71, of Sterling, was issued a citation at 12:15 p.m. for speeding, 54 mph in a 35 mph zone. This violation occurred in the 1300 block of Pines Road.

Four verbal warnings were issued from June 29 through July 5.
