State craft grow deadline suspension impacts Oregon group’s application

BY JEFF HELFRICH ​​​​​​​jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com A possible cannabis craft grow business in Oregon has had a delay in its state application process.

The Illinois Department of Agriculture announced June 30 that the July 1 deadline for issuing 40 licenses has been temporarily suspended due to the previous extension of the application deadline and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The Tree Pharm group in Oregon, which had its special use permit for the craft grow approved by the Oregon City Council in April, will have to wait to hear for now.

“We don’t know for sure,” Tree Pharm Representative Ed Messenger said. “We’re anticipating the middle of August. They keep relating it back to COVID-19, but that doesn’t really play a part in this.”

A craft grow is a business licensed by the Department of Agriculture to cultivate, dry, cure, and package marijuana,

local businesspeople David Murray, Cole Johnson, Justine Messenger and Tyler Hagemann, did sign some things for July 1, but they were negotiable and “nothing was detrimental.”

Messenger is uncertain as far as the odds of the group’s application being chosen for a license.

“The state hasn’t released the number of applicants. It could be 400, 1,000 or 2,000,” Messenger said.

During a presentation at approval meetings with the city in April, Messenger said The Tree Pharm’s purpose is to grow, harvest and process wholesale cannabis flower and extracts for a highgrade, top-shelf product line.

The facility will consist of a 5,000 square foot grow canopy utilizing automated environmental and irrigation control systems.

Messenger also said they plan to hire locally, promote education and employ environmentally-friendly business practices.

If The Tree Pharm doesn’t receive a license from the state, it plans to apply for the next round of licenses, currently slated for 2021.

“With the pushbacks, who knows what will happen with that,” Messenger said.

“We’d polish up our application and maybe make a few changes and submit it again.”

The Oregon School District will host an open registration day on July 23, from 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. in the Oregon Elementary – Etnyre Wing Library.

A computer lab will be available for anyone who needs assistance with online registration and parents can opt to pay registration fees in person rather than online during this time.

For students returning to the district, registration may be completed online again using the PowerSchool Parent Portal. The district will open online registration beginning July 13.

Messenger said The Tree Pharm anticipated the delay due to a suspension happening with the round of state-distributed dispensary licenses, as Ed Messenger well as the extension given for the application deadline.

If given a license, The Tree Pharm still plans to be operational within six months of receiving it. The business plans to open at 807 Pines Road in Oregon where the former Basler’s Ace Hardware was once located.

“We’ve been working on things,” Messenger said. “There’s still a lot to be done. There’s a lot of contractor things to get done like electrical and power to prepare for if we do get the license.”

Messenger said that no actual construction has started, but pre-construction work like design and calculating cost numbers have “been in the works.”

Messenger knows of other applicants for licenses that have been put in a tough spot with the deadline suspension due to being under contract for leases and other things that started July 1. The Tree Pharm group, which also includes

The Mt. Morris Fire Department was dispatched Monday morning at 9:51 a.m. to 3747 W. Illinois 64 Lot# 155, in Mt. Morris Estates, for a report of a mobile home on fire.

When firefighters arrived they found smoke and fire venting from the residence.

“Companies were on scene extinguishing the fire for several hours.” said Mt. Morris Fire Chief Rob Hough.

Other departments responding to the scene with Mt. Morris were Byron, Leaf River, Oregon and Polo.

“No one (or pets) were home at the time of the fire,” said Hough. “The home does appear to be a total loss.

There were no injuries to any of the firefighters. The cause is currently under investigation.”

Golf carts, ATVs were on parade in Grand Detour Uncle Sam even made an appearance at this July event

BY EARLEEN HINTON ehinton@oglecountynews.com What do you do if the coronavirus pandemic causes you to delay your wedding for a year?

Slap on a summer cut wedding gown complete with Nike tennis shoes and a veil, get your groomto-be into tuxedo shorts, make a wedding cake with six rolls of toilet paper, and jump on a golf cart with a sign “In Sickness and in Health..A Covid Style Wedding”.

That’s what Kate Johnson and Joe Roth did on July 4 as they rode in the second Grand Detour Golf Cart Parade.

“We were supposed to be married this August, but our wedding is now next August,” said Johnson, a Grand Detour native. “We’re trying to make some fun out of it today as we plan to enjoy another year of being engaged.”

The cart, driven by Roth’s best man, Evan Schmidt, with Elizabeth Wheeler riding shotgun, was one of just over 50 golf carts and all-terrain vehicles that took part in the village’s second golf cart parade.

Organized by Jim Ross, this year’s entries even included a motorcycle, two Jeeps, and a couple of bicycles.

Ruth Ross, Jim’s mother and longtime Grand Detour resident, was this year’s Grand Marshal. She rode in the lead vehicle, Jim’s antique Jeep, with his wife Connie and black lab along as passengers.

Jim, wearing red, white and blue pants, perused this year’s entries chatting with neighbors and friends, before starting the 8 p.m. parade from the parking lot of the John Deere Historic Site.

by Finn Sommers, 9, of Crystal Lake, who saw last year’s parade when he was visiting his grandfather Tom Welty. This year he asked Welty if he could decorate his Bears-themed golf cart and drive it in the parade.

The cart, dubbed “Tatsawanna”included big blue eyes, a grass skirt, and yellow streamers. “I don’t know how to spell the name,” said Finn.

“That’s just what we call it.”

In the past we have always gone to the parade in Mt. Morris and then we would have fried chicken afterwards along with watermelon. This year we were alone and if Dr. Fauci would have had his way, we would have stayed in our house all day!!

Instead in the morning we headed for the restaurant with our masks on and gathered with our friends.

It was the first time in four months.

I wanted to hug everybody but Dr. Fauci would definitely not have liked that.

We quickly found out that masks are not for 90-year-old people. I am the one that was in the hospital in Rockford a few years ago when I could not breathe and no one ever figured out what was the problem.

I keep my pneumonia shots current. Masks are not in my future and I soon wore it around my arm. My arm will be in fine shape if I ever get the virus!

So we went out, ate, and visited with friends inside. Come to think of it, we were not even socially dis-

tant! We realize we will not get the Fourth of July award from Dr. Fauci and frankly I am tired of listening to him.

Frankly I have come to believe that no one knows what to do and we are figuring out things as we go. There have been some rather strange ideas like locking and welding shut all the parks in the city so the children could not play in them.

Then opening them all up for the street protesters. Will someone explain that to me?

Kenneth and I were not TV watchers and then we only watched sports.

We never turned to the TV for our

news and got what we wanted from the newspaper. Then the virus hit and sports was diminished to nothing.

There were only so many times we could watch the Chicago Cubs winning the world series before we said, “Enough of that!” We turned to the news on television because we had nothing else to do. It became a research project because I quickly realized that all news is “not created equally.”

“It took me 30 hours to do the rest of it,” joked Mark referring to the numerous red-white and blue streamers and large patriotic top hat that adorned the 1987 Yamaha golf cart.

Jared Tate had two parrots to add to his golf cart entry—Johnny and June, named after the country and western signing duo of Johnny Cash and June Carter. Johnny and June perched on the front of the cart as it made its way through town.

But the most presidential entry in Saturday’s event was Kevin Carroll’s 1964 Cushman Golfster cart.

“President Eisenhower used a cart like this when he golfed,” Carroll said.

Ogle County had 27 train depots at one time Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon has researched the people, places and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is one of a series of the articles he has written.

BY OTTO DICK In the early 1900s there were 27 depots in Ogle County. Now there are two.

The Oregon Depot is now used as a museum and the Rochelle Depot serves as office space for the C. B. & Q. railroad.

Many of these depots were established at certain intervals supplying our early trains with water and fuel. Many of the small communities in Ogle County were established at these depots.

Some of these were Stratford, West Branch, Woosung, Myrtle, Monroe Center, Lindenwood, Honeycreek, Holcomb, Hazelhurst, Harper, Creston, and Davis Junction.

Some communities, like Oregon, without a railroad knew the importance of having a road through their community. They recruited different railroads to run through their town.

Residents of Oregon actively recruited several railroads including one electric railroad. They pledged money to encourage a railroad to build a line through Oregon.

Each station was important for freight, passenger service, mail delivery and telegraph communication connecting us to the rest of the world. Some depots contained sleeping quarters for railroad crew and rest room facilities.

In other words these railroads and depots played a huge role in the development of Ogle County.

Our 1909 railroad map shows the six Ogle County railroads. The Illinois Central running north to south through Woosung, Polo, Haldane, Forreston and Baileyville was the first railroad through Ogle County in 1853.

This was an important route during the Civil War. In 1902 Ogle railroads in order were the Chicago and Northwestern, Burlington, Chicago Milwaukee St. Paul, Chicago and Great Western and the Illinois Iowa and Minnesota.

Now back to the 27 depots. Four cities had two depots with two railroads running through or close by.

These were Byron, Rochelle, Polo and Stillman Valley.

United States. Just a reminder this was 18 years before the first car passed through Oregon. For several years after people purchased cars they had to store them for the winter.

Many servicemen departed from the Oregon Depot with Oregon being the county seat. Many traveled from the Oregon Depot to Camp Grant in Rockford.

At Christmas time the depot was busy with college students return-

ing home for the holiday and shoppers heading to Marshall Field’s in Chicago.

During the summer months the Burlington sponsored several tourist trips to Chicago.

We have a tourist brochure on display at the depot distributed by the railroad. Also the railroad was used by candidates running for office.

President Roosevelt and Governor Lowden being two of these. Governor Lowden is responsible for

Oregon having a very nice upscale depot.

He was on the railroad board of directors and wanted a nice depot for his hometown.

So, when you drive by the Oregon Depot remember that at one time there were 27 depots in Ogle County and eight zephyrs stopped at Oregon every day.

Now cars and trucks serve this community. Showing my age, I preferred the trains.

BY JEFF HELFRICH ​​​​​​​jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com New Polo School District Superintendent Kelly Mandrell took to social media on July 2 with a letter to parents and the community about the upcoming school year.

Former Superintendent Chris Rademacher retired on July 1.

It will fall on Mandrell and the district to plan for the 2020-2021 school year, which will include adhering to recent COVID-19 guidelines recently released by the state.

Those include required use of face coverings, no gatherings of more than 50, social distancing, symptom screenings, temperature checks and increased cleaning and disinfection.

returning to school in the fall,” Mandrell wrote. “Does my child have to wear a mask in the school? How are/Are sports going to be played? What happens if my child gets sick?”

Mandrell wrote of changes under her direction that will include expanded communication and collaboration with students, families and the community that will include a larger social media presence, more articles and updates in local newspapers and enhancing the district’s website.

Several community forums will be hosted throughout the school year to discuss specific topics such as planning for the start of the 2020-2021 school year.

“While we are facing challenging and uncertain times, we will overcome these obstacles through great collaboration, planning and communication,” Mandrell wrote.

We soon became interested in the street protesters and the historical statues being torn down. Some news did not report it accurately and made it sound like a big block party until people started losing their lives.

Joan Raley called me and we had a long conversation about the statues and what was happening in our country. Linda McLane emailed me about Aplington House and she was worried. Thank heaven we do not have Zenas Aplington outside on his horse or we might be in trouble. Linda is a descendent of Aplington.

The Native Americans want Mt. Rushmore back and if we did that we would have to give them all of the United States wouldn’t we?

On July 3 we watched the program taking place at Mt. Rushmore and the president’s speech was the best I have ever heard and should have been carried by all our news media. It was not!!

Kenneth and I went to bed with a feeling of hope for our country. We feel safe at the moment. On July 4 we watched the program from the White House and that was wonderful. We did manage to celebrate the Fourth of July in style.

In April 1832, a member of the Sauk nation named Black Hawk led a group of 1,000 Native Americans across the Mississippi into Illinois. Black Hawk claimed his people had not been properly represented at treaty negotiations with the U.S. Government, and thus they retained rights to their ancestral lands.

The Governor of Illinois reacted to Black Hawk’s return as if it was an act of war.

The battles over the next three months would become the last in the state, a climactic time in the story of Indian removal in Illinois.

In this program we will take an overview of the “Indian problem,” from first interaction with the French voyageurs, attempts at assimilation and coexistence, and finally treaties and government promises broken.

Never been in the silks-this is the time to try it out at ADM Studios for a Tweens + Teens Aerial Yoga workshop. This introductory class will give you experience working with aerial hammocks to support your postures as well as easing into inversions.

We will practice mindfulness as we connect movement and breath together in a floating meditation. Aerial Yoga increases flexibility, strength, and balance and helps your spine and core. It’s also a great stress reliever, mood enhancer and confidence booster.

Farm to Table now a carryout thanks to pandemic Due to COVID-19 the Oregon Park District’s Annual Farm to Table Dinner has been changed to curbside pick-up.

“We will have the same amazing food by local chefs but delivered to your car door,” said Oregon Park District Superintendent of Recreation Tina Ketter. “Plan a dinner date now for Friday, July 24. Reservations are required as a limited number of meals will be prepared.”

The Farm to Table Dinner event is a fundraiser for the District’s Youth Scholarship Fund. All proceeds will help local youth in need participate in Park District sports and recreation programs.

“Donations to the Scholarship Fund are accepted at any time so if you are on a special diet or out of town for this event, feel free to contact the Park District with a donation or purchase a meal and surprise a friend, neighbor, or relative with a fantastic dinner prepared by local celebrity chefs,” Ketter said.

Meals this year will be prepared by: Jen’s Arti-

san Breads, Hazel’s, Ralfie’s BBQ, Hector’s Cocina, Northside BarbaQ, The Noble Cakery, O’s Bakery, Lynnies’ Kitchen and Ralphie & LuLu’s.

“These amazing chefs from our community all volunteer to make these dishes and many of them donate the ingredients needed that we are not able to source locally,” Ketter said. “Most of the ingredients are donated by local growers and are fresh right from the farm, garden, beehive or berry patch. Without our donors, celebrity chefs and the Event Sponsor, Circle G Farms and Feedlots, this event would not be possible.”

On this year’s menu is: Country White Bread

with Honey Butter, Arcadian Blend Veggie Salad, Creamy Cucumber Salad, Season Grilled Chicken Breast, Ralfie’s Signature Pork Kabob, Herb Roasted Potatoes, Fiesta Sweet Corn, Candied Bacon Green Beans and a dessert sampler with a Cake Shot with Mixed Berry Buttercream, Country Fresh Decorated Sugar Cookie, Mini Cheesecake with Blueberry Compote and a Chocolate Covered Strawberry.

“Dinners can be picked up to take home, or you can plan a picnic in the park, or take your meal to one of the participating businesses in Oregon with outdoor seating,” Ketter said.

Meals are $30 each. The deadline to reserve a meal (register) is Tuesday, July 14 or until sold out.

Unlike years past we will have no in person programs. Instead we will be using an online resource to track books, provide missions to complete at home, and track rewards.

We will have fun rewards for those who reach goals at the end of the summer. The Ogle County Health Department reported 24 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, bringing the new total number to 291. Recoveries of documented cases stand at 248. The death total in the county remains at 4.

Ages and locations of the individuals testing positive are not being released to protect their privacy.

The Illinois Department of Public Health site indicted on Tuesday that there are 160 cases in the 61068 zip code that includes Rochelle, Creston and White Rock.

Stillman Valley’s zip code, 61084, has 12 cases in it according to the IDPH site. Byron’s zip code, 61010, has 30 cases. Davis Junction (61020) has 18 cases.

The zip codes that house Oregon (61061) and Mt. Morris (61054) each have 13 cases and Polo’s zip code, 61064, has 10 cases in it.

I am not a savvy political person, but I am a thinker.

I do not spend hours on social media or the news. However, I am aware there are conflicting views regarding how Americans can work for improving lives of black Americans, so I began researching.

I am writing simply to ask others to understand the difference between agreeing that black lives are valuable and the Black Lives Matter organization.

The demands made by this organization are for complete revolution in society, family, economic system, education, and American government.

I back that statement by urging people to read the website: www.blacklivesmatter.com “What We Believe” and then make an informed decision about the movement. Support changes that value the lives of others but please do your research before getting on board with this or any other organization.

You know what that means, right?

First, shout your views at the top of your lungs but be very careful not to outline how you’ll actually get anything done.

Second, quickly transition to wildly exaggerating the positions of other candidates.

Do not hesitate to misrepresent those views because your supporters will never pay any attention to anything “the other side” says anyway.

Third, launch a vicious and constant effort to attach the most vile labels possible to your opponent. Sometimes this can be difficult because not all people agree on the most disgusting labels.

Slap on as many as possible and do not worry about evidence that they are valid!

The idea is to clearly establish that every idea your opponent has is designed to destroy everything “good people” hold dear.

Fourth, make sure you caution everyone that the election results are unquestionably accurate if you win but totally fraudulent if you lose and there can be no disputing that statement.

Do you know who is responsible for our political campaigning having come to this? We all are.

Those of us who actually use these tactics are the implementers.

Those who laugh and cheer when we hear candidates engaged in this are the enablers. It is little wonder we refuse to listen to one another and are unwilling to even try to compromise.

The Mendota Area Chamber of Commerce announced last week that certain events will still go on in August due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We want everyone to be safe, so that was a big factor in all our decisions for this year,” said Kate Fox, President & CEO of the Chamber.

“Everything is going to be online

and virtual.”

This year, there will be no carnival, food vendors, parade, entertainment, beer garden or craft and flee market.

No more than 50 people in a space are allowed in Illinois until the state reaches Phase 5 in the Restore Illinois plan.

The 2020 Sweet Corn Festival Queen Pageant and Sweet Corn Festival Mini Pageant will go on, but there will only be a limited amount of people in attendance; the event will be live-streamed online.

The 50/50 Drawing will happen but will be live-streamed as well.

Sweet corn sales and festival apparel will be available as well.

“Not a single person could have predicted the unparalleled situation in which we find ourselves in,” read a press statement about the announcement. “Identical to every other year, the safety and well-being of every festival goer is at the top of our list.”

Illinois State Police District 1 Commander, Captain Matthew Hodgdon, has announced District 1 enforcement figures and activity for June.

Illinois State Police District 1 Troopers issued 348 citations, 200 written warnings, and made 15 criminal arrests.

There were 196 citations issued for Speeding, 61 citations issued for Occupant Restraint violations, and 15 citations issued for Distracted Driving violations.

Troopers investigated 23 traffic crashes, assisted 91 motorists, and conducted 24 commercial vehicle inspections, six of which were placed out-of-service for safety reasons.

There were five arrests for Driving Under the Influence.

District 1, which encompasses Carroll, Lee, Ogle, and Whiteside counties, investigated one traffic crash fatality in June.

Bird passes away, but donations needed for center to help others A Whiteside County Sheriff Deputy rescued an injured pelican on the Route 30 bridge near Clinton, Iowa last week, but sadly the bird had to be euthanized before it arrived at a wildlife rehabilitation center.

The sheriff’s department gave a special “shout out” to Deputy Sean Coutts for getting the pelican from the bridge in an attempt to save its life. The department also thanked Adam Wherry and Donald Cyczyk for their assistance.

Coutts is an Oregon High School graduate and former part-time police officer for the Oregon Park District.

The bird was en route to Hoo Haven, a wildlife rehabilitation center and educational center near Durand.

HBO series shot at state park premieres Aug. 16 HBO’s upcoming horror series “Lovecraft Country,” which filmed scenes at Mt. Morris’ White Pines State Park in 2018, has a premiere date of Aug. 16.

Some of Ogle County’s natural landscapes were used as location shots in August 2018 at the park with filming also along a section of U.S. 52 in western Ogle County.

“We chose that area for its topography ... we needed something with an open landscape,” location manager Wes Hagan said in 2018. “We thought it would work well with the show, and that’s why we’re here.”

The crew came to Ogle County from Chicago, where they were filming scenes in the Pilsen neighborhood in the Lower West Side.

“Lovecraft Country” is a horror drama set in the 1950s about a black man, 22-year-old Army veteran Atticus Turner, who drives across the country searching for his missing father with his Uncle George—publisher of “The Safe Negro Travel Guide”— and his childhood friend Letitia, encountering racism and the evils of Jim Crow America as well as malevolent spirits.

Former White Pines State Park concessionaire Beth George said in August 2018 that she received a call from HBO earlier in 2018 about shooting at the park.

“The book is written and based out of Chicago,” said George. “We, luckily, are the southern most stand of white pines. That’s how they found our little space.”

A letter sent to about a half a dozen residents by HBO and Random Productions location managers Hagan and Greg Chiodo said Route 52 west of Polo from West Canada Road to Freeport Road, and West Stewart Road from North Eagle Creek Road to Route 52, were to be closed while scenes were being shot on Canada and at the intersection of West Stew-

art and Brookville roads.

However, due to an accident with one of the movie’s stunt cars in Elburn, that shooting was delayed a week.

Some scenes were also shot on Brookville Road at West Stewart and West Canada at North Eagle Creek. Only area residents were allowed access during those times.

White Pines Resort, the restaurant, cabins, gift shop, and some trails located inside the park, were closed at times during the filming.

Other trails, picnic areas, shelters and the campground remained open.

Film crews and trailers were staged in the parking lots at Spectrum Preferred Meats, the White Pines Roller Rink, and KI Tracks, all located on Pines Road near the park.

Staging crews could also be seen along Forest Road, located just east of the park, and in an adjoining field.

The crew also filmed in the Chicago suburb of Elburn.

“Lovecraft Country” stars Jonathan Majors, Courtney B. Vance, and Jurnee Smollett-Bell, and is produced by Jordan (“Get Out”) Peele and J.J. Abrams.

Ag in the Classroom offering virtual library programs Agriculture in the Classroom is offering a virtual library program through local libraries and park districts.

The program, Insect: Friend or Foe, will use Kate Messner’s “Up in the Garden and Down in the Dirt” to look at insects.

Participants will take part in hands on activities to discover the different mouth parts of insects.

They will also make a craft showing the life cycle of an insect.

This program will be held virtually. Libraries and park districts along with times are listed below.

OGLE COUNTY SHERIFF Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle reports the following activity July 1 Darion Brown, 29, of Rockford,was cited at 3 a.m. for driving while license revoked, fleeing to elude, operating an uninsured motor vehicle and speeding after deputies attempted to stop a motorcycle for speeding on Illinois 64 near Woodlawn Road.

Brown failed to stop and continued eastbound on Illinois 64 at a high rate of speed.

After traveling approximately one and a half miles the driver lost control on a

curve near the intersection with Esmond Road.

As a result the motorcycle went off the north side of the roadway and into a field where the driver was ejected.

Brown refused treatment from the Malta Fire Dept. firefighters who assisted at the scene.

Dekalb County Sheriff’s deputies assisted at the scene with the accident investigation.

Brown was released on an I-bond and was transported by a family member to the hospital for treatment with non-life threatening injuries.

Each area presbyterian church has its own “Stronghold story.�

The Oregon faith-based camp and retreat center has hosted many events over the years for people in the area, but it won’t be this year due to COVID-19. Stronghold has had to cancel its summer camp and the nonprofit has lost thousands in revenue.

Pastor David Spaulding of the First Presbyterian Church of Dixon came to Stronghold’s aid this week, donating $5,000 and creating the “Stronghold challenge.�

One of Spaulding’s elders called him recently and asked what could be done to help Stronghold. “We met and put a three-pronged approach together,� Spaulding said. “We looked at our budget and saw we had some money for day camps and camp scholarships. We decided to send it to Stronghold anyways and looked at some more money and approved a gift of $5,000. Congregation members were also asked to consider giving to the camp as part of the plan. “We also wanted to ask other churches and more to give, which is the Stronghold challenge,� Spaulding said. Pierce accepted the donation in a video with Spaulding at Stronghold this week. calls. His parents, Mark and Lisa, have asked him why he hasn’t taken one of the two flights a week that go to the U.S. on United Airlines. He doesn’t want to. They do enjoy his stories and photos.

It’s been strange to see the news of the pandemic and Black Lives Matter protests back home from all the way in Guatemala, Wiersema said.

“Being here and seeing that, I feel for everyone there,” Wiersema said. “It gives me comfort to be here. I’m happy to be here and knowing my

family is safe.”

Before his Central America trip this year, Wiersema spent 2015 to 2020 living in hotels managing mobile marketing and sponsorship programs at large music festivals and sporting events. He’s used to being away. But he’s never “stuck.”

“There’s a huge world out there but I think you should experience some of it,” Wiersema said.

“Travel is important and it’s been great for me.”

Jamison Wiersema has to be careful with the word “stuck.”

After spending January, February and half of March exploring Mexico and Belize, the Milledgeville native has been in Antigua, Guatemala for 3 months due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But he says he isn’t “stuck.”

“I’m totally happy here,” Wiersema said. “It’s a relaxed environment. It’s a nice spot to be in. It’s great to be able to experience it here.”

2020 was slated to be Wiersema’s travel year after saving up for it. He has gotten some hiking, diving and volcano-watching in. He was on his way to the Panama Canal before the pandemic hit, where he would’ve decided on coming home or continuing down to South America.

Wiersema said it doesn’t seem like the borders will open up for “a few more months.” He’s thinking there’s about a 60 percent chance he’ll come home in September.

“There aren’t people from different countries here with tourism being dead,” Wiersema said.

“You question why you’re here with nothing being open.”

Antigua was devastated by nearby volcano eruptions in late 2018. Last week, it had a large eruption that resulted in no damage. Wiersema heard thunder and felt two minutes of rumble.

Papaya and Fuego are the names of the two volcanoes.

Wiersema often watches them from his balcony and can see smoke going up every 7-8 minutes and sometimes the light from the lava. He spent time hiking up Fuego and slept next to it.

“The ground was warm,” Wiersema said. “It’s so loud that it wakes you up every 10 minutes.

To see it erupt in front of you, that was the most enjoyable experience of my life.”

The COVID-19 pandemic in Guatemala resulted in a three-month quarantine and a curfew from 6 p.m. until 5 a.m. There is a stay-at-home order similar to the United States’ and restaurants do delivery and to-go orders.

Grocery stores have limited hours and the country’s president talks every Sunday about the situation. Certain license plate numbers aren’t allowed to go out on certain days. If someone there is hungry, they’re encouraged to wave a white flag on a corner and people will help.

“You can’t save up a lot with it not being a rich country,” Wiersema said. “People take what they make for the day and go home and buy dinner with it. It’s detrimental for the town. It’s different to be here for the fun and this happens. It makes me sad.”

Girl drowns in Plum River Man shot, killed in Como

BY KATHLEEN A. SCHULTZ kschultz@shawmedia.com A 5-year-old girl died Sunday, June 28 after being pulled from the Plum River in Savanna.

The girl, Elena Jessica Schaefer, was reported missing, along with a 12-year-old and another 5-year-old, about 12:45 p.m.

When Savanna police and fire, Carroll County deputies and EMS responded, they found one child and learned the other two might be in the

river, Police Chief Jeffrey Dorn said in a news release.

Emergency responders found the second child clinging to a tree branch, unharmed. She was found at 1:13 p.m. about a half-mile downstream. She was flown to Javon Bea Hospital-Rockton where she died.

Her obituary appears below. A Go Fund Me page has been established for donations.

The man shot and killed in his yard in Como on Saturday night or early Sunday morning was Jason A. Chapman, 43, the Whiteside County coroner said.

Chapman’s body was found in his yard on Front Street around 12:30 a.m. Sunday; he was shot sometime after 7 p.m. Saturday, Whiteside County Sheriff John Booker said.

The investigation is ongoing, and

further details are not yet being released, Booker said.

A local couple, one of whom is a longtime felon wanted in a stabbing a year ago, are on the lam on the East Coast, accused of murder, attempted murder, armed robbery and grand larceny.

Jorden E. Johnson , 27, of Sterling, and Latisha Desiree Evans, 20, of Rock Falls, are wanted by Georgetown, South Carolina police in connection with an incident at a hotel last Sunday that left one person dead and another critically injured.

According to South Strand News of Georgetown, police were called to Rodeway Inn around 8:30 a.m. Monday, where they found a woman with “critical” injuries bleeding outside a room and 66-year-old Jack Kendree Jr. dead inside, covered in blood.

An autopsy was to be held today; the cause of death has not been released.

He has an extensive felony history in Lee, Ogle and Whiteside counties.

In 2017, Johnson was convicted of aggravated battery in Lee County and sentenced to 3 years, and to theft in Ogle County and sentenced to 2 years.

He was convicted of aggravated battery in Whiteside County in 2011 and sentenced to 3 years, and of residential burglary and sentenced to 6 years.

He was convicted in 2010 of burglary in Whiteside County and was given 2 years’ probation, but he violated the terms, it was revoked, and he was sentenced to 3 years.

Project to bring new businesses to I-88 near Dixon

BY RACHEL RODGERS rrodgers@shawnews.com DIXON – The city and the Lee County Industrial Development Association are partnering with two commercial real estate developers to open up 27 acres near Interstate 88 for future hotels, restaurants and other businesses.

LCIDA announced plans last week for the “Gateway” project, which will bring a major development on South Galena Avenue across from Walmart between Keul and Bloody Gulch roads.

Xsite Real Estate of Burr Ridge and Walsh Partners of Elmhurst are finalizing a purchase agreement for the land, and preliminary designs call for up to a dozen buildings.

Infrastructure work could begin as early as spring 2021.

The project is expected to create more than 600 jobs and $1 million a year in new tax revenue.

It will bring the city closer to its longtime goal of building up the I-88 corridor, Mayor Li Arellano Jr. said.

“This joint project is a major development that builds on previous successes and partnerships to advance that goal,” Arellano said. “It is a huge win for Dixon and a boon for travelers, because it will firmly cement Dixon’s position as the best travel stop in our region.”

City Manager Danny Langloss called the development “game-changing for our community.”

“Over the past two and a half years, we made a major breakthrough with the landowners and have gained the support of a trusted and proven economic development partner,” Langloss said.

“We are confident that the team of Xsite and Walsh will get the project done and bring new services and amenities to the community, along with the resulting property and sales tax revenues to local government, including the city, schools, and county.”

Xsite is the developer of Presidential Parkway Plaza, the four-building project north of Walmart along the south side of Keul Road.

“We have enjoyed working in Dixon to bring new retail and food options to the community,” Xsite President Bill Paul said. “Dixon city officials have always been fair to work with and very supportive of responsible growth in the community. We look forward to this new opportunity here.”

Marketing has begun for the commercial development, focusing on hospitality-related businesses such as restaurants, hotels and gas stations, among others.

“With the rich history that is Dixon, and the fact that you have a city government excited to partner with experienced developers, makes it all the more comforting when you have the public and private sectors jointly focused on the same goals of a commercial development,” said Charles H. Walsh Jr. of Walsh Partners.

The project is within the Lee Ogle Enterprise Zone, which provides short-term property tax abatements and sales tax waivers on building materials, along with other incentives to developers. The area is also covered by the federal Opportunity Zone Program, which offers preferred tax treatment to some forms of investment in the zone.

“The Dixon tollway interchange is one of the few access points between Aurora and the Quad Cities that offers hospitality services visible and accessible immediately at the entrance/exit,” LCIDA Executive Director Kevin Marx said.

The city is pursuing a $1 million state infrastructure grant as well as a $1 million Opportunity Zone grant, and winners should be announced in the next couple of weeks, Langloss said.
