Railroad car lease presentation made Zephyr car might be coming to the Depot

BY JEFF HELFRICH ​​​​​​​jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com Oregon Depot Museum Board Chairman Roger Cain made a presentation to the Oregon City Council on Tuesday regarding the possible lease of a restored railroad car that may be coming to town.

The depot board has been in contact with Mike Abernathy, the owner of a 1947 Zephyr dome car about it being relocated to Oregon.

“It’s a feasible, doable project,” Cain said. “There’s been a tremendous amount of support financially and from local manufacturers. The relevance to the Oregon Depot is there. It’s part of a set that traveled from Chicago to Minneapolis where it stopped in Oregon both ways. The car is in Charles City, Iowa.

He’s been spending money to where it can be licensed to travel.”

The renovations of the car aren’t finished yet. Cain said the car will be worth around $500,000 when completed and it will have a patio, fence, seat 24 people and feature a kitchen. It could be used for those that want to hold events in it.

Burlington Northern has been “convinced” to extend tracks and lease land for the exit and entrance of the car at no cost, Cain said.

The city did not take any action on the project. It will be reviewed by the council at a later date after some decisions that must be made by Burlington Northern.

Candlelight Walk The carriage ride route for Candlelight Walk was unanimously approved

by the board Tuesday. Rides will be offered Nov. 28 and Dec. 19.

Candlelight Walk’s lineup was rolled out last week and will be different from years’ past due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Christmas isn’t canceled in Oregon,” Oregon Mayor Ken Williams said. “It will take place over more days and there will be raffles, decorated businesses, our people can sign up to have Santa and Mrs. Claus drive by in the firetruck.

Merchants will give out craft bags instead of the kids indoor carnival. It’s going to be really neat.”

Council approves offer for new city hall

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com The Polo City Council unanimously approved a $229,000 offer on a building that could become its new city hall and police department at a special meeting on Friday, Oct. 9.

The building, located at 610 S. Division Ave. in Polo is the former site of the CedarStone banquet hall, which was operated by White Pines Resort. That business declared bankruptcy due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We were contacted by the bank about a new property as a city hall,” Polo Mayor Doug Knapp said. “I talked with the aldermen. The asking price was $229,000. We were going to try for $200,000. They were showing it and we thought maybe we should offer the full asking price. The plan is to move city hall and the police station over there.

The main hall could be used for civic

functions. We could open it up to weddings.”

The council discussed paying for the new property equally out of its four funds: general, water, sewer and sanitation. That method would see $57,250 coming out of each fund. The full price could also be taken out of the general fund.

The city plans to do around $50,000 in

renovations to make the new building suitable for city operations. Engineering work would also have to be put out to bid and done.

The city’s current city hall is located at 115 S. Franklin Ave. downtown.

Alderman Randy Schoon voiced concerns about the old building.

“I can’t imagine anyone would want to buy city hall,” Schoon said. “We’d have to tear it down. So $229,000 plus $50,000 for renovations and money for demolition we’d have $350,000 in this project.

By moving this out, we’re taking this out of downtown and we’re hurting enough down here. But I still think it’s the best opportunity so far.”

City Attorney Tom Suits said there could be delays in the purchase process due to financial difficulties of the previous owner.

If there are no delays, the city’s contract would see it take ownership on Oct. 29.

More than 7,000 mail in ballots out; hand sanitizer donated by Anheuser-Busch

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com The Ogle County Clerk’s office has officially installed a ballot drop box for those that don’t want to leave their mail-in ballots up to the United States Post Office.

The box was installed by the west doors of the Ogle County Courthouse late last week. It is under video surveillance and can be used 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

“We’re excited to have it up there,” Ogle County Clerk Laura Cook said. “We think a lot will use it. People were calling left and right in recent weeks and now we get calls thanking us for doing it. People don’t want to even go into the courthouse. It’s safe and secure for them.”

Cook said her office has mailed out over 7,000 mail-in ballots. Voters still have the option to drop their mail-in ballots off in-person at Cook’s office from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Monday until Friday.

Early voting has also been going on at the clerk’s office. Currently, early voters stand at 1,439. “There was a total of 3,063 at the last presidential election,” Cook said. “We’re almost at half. I think we’ll surpass it.”

Cook and her election judges are preparing to conduct election operations in person in November as well. Her office recently received some help from an unlikely source.

Beer company Anheuser-Busch delivered more than 375,000 ounces of hand sanitizer to Illinois to help ensure the safety of voters and polling site workers in the state.

“The Customer is Always Wrong”, written by Ian McWethy, follows five different high school students through their first jobs. At first, it doesn’t seem like rocket science to babysit, wait tables, pass out flyers, work at a movie theater, or be a telemarketer, but it’s not long before they find out that in the minimum-wage world, the customer is king… a brutal, ruthless king.

“This funny, biting comedy is an ode to anyone who’s ever had to tell the worst customer in the world to “have a nice day,” OHS Choir Director Zach Hall said.

Tickets are available via reservation only; they are $8 for adults and $5 for students.

“OHS’s fall play is unique to other productions because it is entirely student-led. This means that student leaders are in charge of choosing the play, directing rehearsals, building the set, and organizing for the community,” Hall said.

This year’s play is directed by Claudia Reckamp and produced by Lydia Cermak.

“The cast has been rehearsing since the beginning of school, so come see the hard work they have put in for this enjoyable comedy,” Hall said.

Our 2020 fall colors rival those from “out east”

BY BETTY OBENDORF Curator, Polo Historical Society Several years ago my sister Ruby Isley, my Aunt Carma, my cousin Jody, and myself took a three week trip to the east to see fall colors. We went through Vermont, New Hampshire, and New York when all the trees were at their best.

We even went up into Canada to see the falls and enjoyed the scenery there. It was one of those trips you never forget.

So when fall rolls around, I reflect back on that spectacular time and try to remember in my mind what it all looked like.

This year I did not have to go any further then my front window to get a magnificent display of fall. If I want more, all I have to do is go down my front driveway and look west. The fall colors are right there.

Remember when we had Peddler’s Pass in Polo? Jan Harvey had put that together right here on Colden Street and everyone came with crafts they had made.

I sat at a little table and sold post cards I had made from pictures I had taken that fall in the east. The

money went to Polo Historical Society.

Joan Raley and I gave tours from a horse drawn wagon of the area.

We talked about the unique homes built in Polo years ago and the characteristics of the houses. Perhaps we mentioned the businessmen who had built those different style of houses.

We talked about the library being a Carnegie Library which makes it also unique.

It was a fun time and as I stood at the end of my driveway the other day and looked west, I could almost see all the festivities that went on during that time.

We really did some clever things to bring people into Polo. I enjoyed sitting there as I peddled my cards and visited with people from all over.

When Peddler’s Pass came to an end, Jan Harvey then did the craft fair at the Polo Town Hall over the Christmas Holidays. We decorated Aplington House for Christmas and did tours there.

I am not quite certain which event came first as the years have gone

by. I just know the town hall looked spectacular and all the Christmas finery.

Now I could not handle any of that and this year one by one all the events that have made up Polo have been dropped. I am thankful for Polo Economic Development and having our grocery store and pharmacy back in Polo. I could not imagine being housebound and not having those two businesses back in town.

The other day I drove to Oregon to hand deliver Kenneth’s absentee ballot for voting to the county clerk. While there I voted early and then drove back to Polo to get some things at the museum. I was tired but took time to stop at our new bakery. I had not been in there since we hardly go anywhere.

I came home with wonderful baked goods. Cinnamon rolls that melt in your mouth and apple and cherry turnovers that are delicious.

I had one immediately with a hot cup of water and honey from Mike Scholl’s bees. I have a jar waiting from Oran Wilder’s Honey and I am certain it is just as good as the bees from the Lime Kiln area

I also love the name, “Wilder Honey.” We are lucky to have many local business people in Polo.

This is one of the churches that we saw in New Hampshire when we visited there to see all the fall colors.

He was stationed at Camp Grant before returning home Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon has researched the people, places and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is one of a series of the articles he has written.

BY OTTO DICK We have Dr. Horace Sheet’s WWI Uniform on display in the Military Room at the Ogle County Historical Society. On Dec. 11, 1918 he was assigned to duty at Fort Riley, Kansas with the Rank of Captain.

While he was stationed at Ft. Riley his brother George died Dec. 29, 1918. He was called home for the funeral and we have the Western Union Telegram sent Dec. 30, granting him a three day leave extension.

On May 19, 1919 he was assigned as Ward Surgeon at Camp Grant in Rockford. On June 28, 1919 Captain H. H. Sheets received his discharge from the Army. He returned to his home in Oregon and resumed his medical practice.

Horace Sheets was born in Oregon, Nov. 20, 1877. This was five years after the train came through Oregon and 25 years before the first car passed through Oregon.

His father B. F. Sheets moved to Oregon in 1861. The following year he enlisted and served in the 92nd Illinois Volunteer Infantry.

Horace graduated from Oregon High School in 1896 and attended Rush Medical College receiving his Medical Degree in 1901. He practiced medicine in Byron for one year and then came to Oregon where he successfully practiced for 27 years.

The year he moved to Oregon he married Miss Gussie Wilson on Sept. 6, 1902.

Dr. Horace and Gussie Sheets built their house at 500 S. 6th Street.

The Oregon High School 1937 football team practice field was located on an empty lot adjacent to the Sheets’ home.

At that time, the football field at the high school was under construction. The Hawks played their home games on the Mt. Morris High School field.

Dr. Sheet’s office was located above the Oregon State Savings Bank building at 406 Washington St. On Oct 26, 1929 he died at the Dixon Hospital from a cerebral hem-

He was stricken while attending the Dixon theatre in Dixon with Mr. and Mrs. Spoor who were owners of the Spoor Hotel in Oregon. Dr. Murphy, his friend, was attending a convention of surgeons at Detroit Michigan and hastened home to Dixon to assist and help his friend.

His condition improved, but a

relapse followed. The funeral was held at his house with burial in Riverview Cemetery.

Dr. Sheets was a founding member of the Oregon Country Club.

On April 24, 1919 the Athletic Director at Camp Funston, Kansas wrote “Returned by Capt. Sheets to camp athletic office, 3 mashies, 3 brassies, 3 putters and 12 balls.” He must have

enjoyed his golf game while he was in the service.

There are three Sheet Homes in Oregon. His father, Illinois Senator B. F. Sheets, lived at 100 S. 7th Street, his brother Reverend Fred Sheets lived at 101 S. 7th St., and Dr. Horace Sheets lived at 500 S. 6th Street.

The Sheets family left their mark in this community.

Demmer calls on community to save nuclear plant

BY RACHEL RODGERS rrodgers@saukvalley.com State Rep. Tom Demmer, R-Dixon, has created a website dedicated to helping save the Byron Nuclear Power Plant, which, if shuttered, would cost the area 727 jobs and $38 million in annual tax revenue.

“The Byron Generating Station is an important cornerstone of the Ogle County economy,” Demmer said. “Not only is the plant home to hundreds of good-paying jobs, it also pays more than $30 million to support schools, public safety and local governments.”

A third of Ogle County’s tax revenue comes from Exelon Generator’s Byron plant and in addition to its regular employees, the company hires about 1,200 contractors every 18 months when one of the Byron units goes offline for refueling and maintenance.

In August, the company announced plans to close the Byron plant in September 2021, the Dresden plant in Morris that November, and said that the La Salle and Braidwood nuclear stations also were at high risk for premature closure.

The plant was licensed for 20 more years but Exelon faces revenue shortfalls in the hundreds of millions of dollars because of declining energy prices and market rules that “allow fossil fuel plants to underbid clean resources,” the company said in a news release announcing the decision.

It pays one of the nation’s highest property tax bills and accounts for most of the county’s nonagricultural economy.

Demmer partnered with Byron-based Wave Marketing after the announcement to create savebyron.com and is asking community members “to join their voices to the chorus of local leaders calling for action to prevent the closure of the facility next year.”

The website includes a “Take Action” section with contact information for the governor’s office, as well as the Senate Energy and Public Utilities Committee and the House Energy and Environment Committee.

“I’m working with my fellow legislators on both sides of the aisle to try to keep the plant open.

This website is a way for the community to find updates, share their comments, and understand how the plant affects our entire area – not only those directly employed there,” Demmer said.

SPORTS COLUMN

Marching band performance helped fill the void O

nce again, I found myself wandering aimlessly around the Oregon sport fields on a Friday night.

The initial drawing card was a brilliant orange sun casting its glow over the cornfields just west of Park West.

There were a couple of youth baseball games in progress, giving what had been an empty summer, vibrancy to the fall evenings.

Then it was Landers-Loomis Field that drew me a couple hundred yards east for investigation of why the lights were on.

To my surprise, a full marching band in uniform, cheerleaders and drill team were performing. The only thing missing was football.

Maybe the team could have put on an exhibition scrimmage, but to be frank, those are kind of boring unless you have a kid playing.

I was craving an actual football game experience, the type with a social fabric woven into it, such as sharing it with like-minded fans at stadiums in Forreston, Polo, Oregon, Stillman, Byron and Rochelle.

Every Friday this season was ideal weather – pleasant and dry - for a football game. People like me who have been accustomed to the Friday ritual for decades and decades, have been forced to go through withdrawals.

Yeah, I know I sound like a whiner and that

there is more important matters in life than a high school football game. But, for a couple of hours on a beautiful fall evening, there isn’t anything more important to me than a football game.

Not any game. I can get by just fine without the colleges and pros, but the high school fare is the best entertainment that money can buy.

The golfers have enjoyed some good weather this week and last, as they wrapped up an abbreviated season with regionals and sectionals.

Oregon hosted both the boys and girls regionals at Silver Ridge and to my amazement or maybe it was my technological naivety, a person could go to an app and get up-to-date scoring on every golfer on the course.

This was on each hole, not after a 9-hole or 18-hole round. The players simply entered scores into their phone and the app would keep a running total on individual and team scores.

It wasn’t that long ago that the PGA didn’t even

have this capability. Part of the reason for using the new-fangled app was Covid-related.

There was no admittance into the clubhouse or perfunctory awards afterwards. Once your round was done, you either went straight home with mom and dad, or waited in the parking lot for your team bus to leave.

In the past, everyone would gather in the clubhouse and scorecards would be tabulated by hand. It was a long, drawn-out affair, one with much more suspense to it.

Both methods have their pros and cons. As Bob Dylan once said, “the times, they are a changin”.

How about Cassie Nyderek just missing a holein-one on No. 11 by a couple inches at the regional? That hole has always been a fun target to aim at.

Here’s a bit of trivia for you old-timers. Remember when pros Calvin Peete and Mick Soli put on an exhibition on what was then a 9-hole Silver (Indian) Ridge back in the 1980s. Lowell Beggs was the mastermind behind that.

For area fans looking for other prep sports to watch, Oregon will be hosting a 14-team boys and girls cross country regional on Saturday, Oct. 24.

With extra flights needed to separate competitors, there promises to be running from morning until afternoon at Park West.

HALLOWEEN PLANS

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com The Polo City Council has endorsed plans for trick-or-treating on Halloween.

Polo Police Chief Tim Rockwood said the city’s trick-or-treat hours will be from 4-7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 31.

All those who participate are asked to wear masks. Residents who don’t wish to participate are asked to turn their porch lights off.

All children participating must be accompanied by an adult or guardian.

“Don’t let kids repeatedly reach into a bucket,” Rockwood said.

“There should be 10 people or less in groups. These are just recommendations. We need to make sure parameters are out there for parents to hopefully endorse.”

People are asked to hand our candy in open spaces and not participate if they’re feeling ill in any way.

The city also acknowledged that the state and the Center for Disease control may announce restrictions in the future.

Other area hours for trick-ortreaters are:

Forreston: Trick-or-treat hours will be from 5-7 p.m. on Oct. 31. Residents are asked to only go to houses with porch lights on and to social distance.

Mt. Morris: Halloween hours will be from 5-8 p.m. on Oct. 31. People who

Paranormal investigation of Stronghold on Oct. 31 The Rock River Area Paranormal Society is offering its first-ever public paranormal investigation of Stronghold Castle on Saturday, Oct. 31 at 6 p.m.

The night will start with a social hour at 6 p.m. with a cash bar available. Dinner begins at 7 p.m. provided by Costa’s in Byron. After a brief history of the building and tales of experiences there, the investigation will begin.

Guests should bring their own ghost-hunting equipment or some will be provided. Guests will get a hands-on experience, especially those new at paranormal investigating.

“Seasoned ghost hunters will have a great time as well,” The event’s Facebook page said.

Stronghold Castle has taken financial losses during the pandemic. With very few youth groups and retreats visiting the castle, they have lost out on “badly-needed” income.

One hundred percent of the proceeds will go directly to Stronghold Castle.

“If we do not use non-medical public health interventions to slow the spread of the virus it will impact other areas of our economy not just our local family owned businesses,” Auman wrote. “So far we have avoided impacts on our healthcare system but I anticipate that we will see a surge and stress of our system before the year is over.”

Stauffer wrote that he believes the virus has been “over played in many respects” and that residents have been “duped to a large degree.”

Later in the email, Stauffer wrote that reported numbers of cases and deaths form COVID-19 have been “exaggerated” and “skewed.” He

believes the mitigations target bars and restaurants with “absolutely no proof” that an increase in numbers has been caused by those establishments.

“The first shutdown caused irreparable financial damage to all of the establishments that were closed down while large box stores were allowed to remain open,” Stauffer wrote. “A second wave of shutdowns will be even worse for these same establishments who are still trying to recover.”

Auman disagreed with Stauffer’s comment that the virus is being overplayed. He said he understands the stress that recent months have put on local businesses and added the

majority of them have been using mitigation appropriately.

The OCHD public administrator also acknowledged that there hasn’t been significant spread from bars and restaurants, but he believes that’s due to people not being truthful about where they’ve been when self-reporting for contact tracing.

Auman said he doesn’t believe the county, state or country has seen the worst of the virus yet.

“This is not fear mongering,” Auman wrote. “This is based on the fact that we are seeing rapid case growth regionally, less compliances with isolated and quarantined individuals, case growth which is nearing our capacity for contact tracing, unclear guidance and direction coming from the federal government, the growing number of people that say flat out they will not follow mitigation and several other factors.”

Auman believes local health officials have a “very clear” understanding of bigger pictures and have been attempting to use data and evidence-based practices to do what’s right for the community.

“We do not want to see any local business negatively impact or close unnecessarily,” Auman wrote.

“There may be grant opportunities for small businesses in your community. We will continue to advocate for small businesses the best we can while protecting the public’s health.”

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com A Mt. Morris village trustee and the Ogle County Health Department Public Administrator had an interaction via email late last week regarding the state’s COVID-19 mitigations impacting local businesses.

Trustee Jerry Stauffer crafted an email to Kyle Auman of the OCHD as well as Ogle County Board members, the media and State Rep. Andrew Chesney pleading for the OCHD to reconsider enforcing the measures.

“I urge you as local health officials to realize the overall picture, not just what the state is telling you to do and say no to this continued insanity and refuse to continue closing our fragile economy we have created and refuse to let the state dictate these unfair rules,” Stauffer wrote. “Please do the right thing and stop the shutdowns so our economy may recover.”

Auman responded to Stauffer and those included on the email and said the mitigations are vital to the county’s continued health. The OCHD administrator said data is trending

Ogle County cases up to 951 as of Tuesday, Oct. 13 Ninety-nine new cases in a week

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com The Ogle County Health Department reported 50 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, Oct. 6, totaling 951 The 50 new cases included Mon-

day and the weekend’s numbers.

99 new cases have come in the past week. Ages and locations of the individuals that test positive are not being released to protect their privacy.

Recoveries of documented cases stand at 767, with 42 new ones reported Tuesday.

The county reported its sixth death on Sept. 15, a female in her 70s.

The OCHD reported its fifth death in the county on July 10 and its fourth

on June 1.

The Illinois Department of Public Health site said Tuesday that there are 475 cases in the 61068 zip code

that includes Rochelle, Creston and White Rock.

Stillman Valley’s zip code, 61084, has 41 cases in it according to the IDPH site. Byron’s zip code, 61010, has 127 cases. Davis Junction (61020) has 48 cases.

The zip codes that house Oregon (61061) and Mt. Morris (61054) have 71 and 45 cases, respectively.

Polo’s zip code, 61064, has 37 cases in it. Leaf River (61047) has 14 cases.

Forreston (61030) has 16 cases.

Lee, Whiteside health departments log complaints

BY TIMOTHY EGGERT teggert@saukvalley.com Violating new coronavirus resurgence mitigations in the last week by some area businesses resulted in a stream of complaints to the Lee and Whiteside County Health Departments, officials said last Friday.

The enhanced clampdowns, which took effect Oct. 3 at 5 p.m., were announced by Gov. JB Pritzker on Sept. 29 after Region 1’s seven-day average of positive cases was 8% or higher for three consecutive days.

Under the harsher rules, no indoor service is allowed at bars or restaurants and reservations are required for outdoor service, which must conclude by 11 p.m.

Patrons will also be prohibited from ordering or waiting at the bar, and all indoor gatherings must be limited to 25 guests or 25% of overall room capacity, whichever is fewer.

But at least one of those guidelines was not followed at some businesses in the first six days of the 14-day mitigation period, according to complaints reported by citizens to the health departments.

“We’ve had a fair amount of complaints come in since Saturday,” said Cathy Ferguson-Allen, the Lee County Public Health Administrator. “We hope we don’t get more this weekend.”

Ferguson-Allen couldn’t provide details or totals of the number of complaints made to her department, but said there was “no shortage” associated with a range of businesses and issues, from patrons and staff not wearing face coverings at restaurants to indoor drinking at bars.

“We understand how crucial business is for our bars and restaurants,” Ferguson-Allen said. “But now is not the time to go out and ignore the guidelines. Now is not the time to gather indoors at businesses.”

Since Oct. 3, the Whiteside County Health Department has recorded 28 separate complaints alleging violations of the resurgence mitigations, according to data obtained by Sauk Valley Media.

Of those complaints, at least 17 had been followed-up with by Friday. None of them resulted in a non-compliance warning, a county health department document issued to a business if a health department

official observes a violation of an Illinois Department of Public Health coronavirus guideline.

Public health officials in Whiteside County have received an additional eight complaints since Oct. 3 related to normal Phase 4 Restore Illinois reopening guidelines, all of which have been followed-up with.

Two of those complaints were substantiated, and two notices of non-compliance were issued, according to the data.

No business has been hit with an order to disperse, the document issued if a business fails to comply with IDPH coronavirus guidelines after it receives a non-compliance warning, since the Oct. 3 resurgence mitigations were put into place or since the IDPH emergency rules

were adopted in August.

Public health officials said last week ahead of the resurgence mitigations’ installation that their enforcement would largely echo the process used to enforce the normal Phase 4 guidelines.

That process is not meant to be punitive, said Cheryl Lee, the Whiteside County Public Health administrator.

“Local businesses took a loss early on and they still can’t function at their fullest level,” Lee has said.

“There are lots of things they need to put in place to be in compliance, but that’s something we try to help them with, rather than punish them for. “ Both Lee and Ferguson-Allen have said that an education-first strategy has been effective in enforcing the normal coronavirus guidelines.

They expect similar results if the enhanced mitigations are enforced through courtesy calls and reminders, rather than through harsher tools like the non-compliance warnings.

Ferguson-Allen said she sent a letter to businesses in Lee County outlining the new guidelines, and that she doesn’t think she’ll have to issue any orders to disperse because of it.

But she added that if a business refuses to comply with the normal Phase 4 guidelines or the resurgence mitigations after education and non-compliance warnings, then she may refer the case to the Illinois State Police, the Illinois Liquor Control Commission or the Illinois Attorney General’s Office.

“Nobody wants this to escalate or go anywhere extreme,” Ferguson-Allen said. “But we have to take these mitigations and their enforcement seriously if we want to be on the other side of this pandemic.”

The public is welcome to come and observe the marksmanship. There will be prizes for the first, second, and third place for the best face shot

into the pumpkins.

There will also be a silent auction featuring various primitive paraphernalia, and a 50/50 cash raffle.

Items to be auctioned will include period muzzleloading accouterments and other muzzleloading era items.

Bids may be submitted to the below email. The 50/50 drawing and the silent auction will be held after the pumpkin shoot, around 1 p.m.

Designer for local company wins special award

BY BRIAN WEIDMAN bweidman@saukvalley.com Lindsay Heitz is reaching new heights in the world of interior design.

Heitz, the Sales and Design Manager at Danlee Wood Products in Forreston, was presented with the Woodworking Network’s 40 Under 40 Award this past summer for outstanding accomplishments in the woodworking industry.

The 40 honored were chosen from more than 120 nominees, and were recognized in an online ceremony on Aug. 26.

Heitz, 38, has been with Danlee Wood Products, which is currently celebrating its 25th year in business, for the last 1 1/2 years, after 13 years as a kitchen and bath designer at Floor to Ceiling in Freeport. The award, which has now been presented for 5 years, is a result of some changes and additions at Danlee.

“It wasn’t for just one thing,” Heitz said. “Basically it was me being an agent of change for this company, being brought on with my knowledge and experience to improve the company and set us up for growth.”

She implemented policies and procedures, and introduced various forms, such as when a customer needed to change an order, to streamline the custom cabinet purchasing and installation process.

Heitz’s biggest change was creating a cabinet selection center at Danlee’s facility in Forreston. It features 10 different styles of doors, as well as a specially curated palette of stains and paints.

Instead of a catalog or computer to peruse, customers can look at actual doors, and choose what color they want them to be. It can also a mobile display. Danlee has a small shop in Minneapolis, and is hoping to expand into Wisconsin.

“Then we can place that selection center in kitchen and bath showrooms or builders showrooms, where it can be used to easily sell our cabinetry,” Heitz said.

The custom cabinet industry is booming, at least in part due to the COVID-19 pandemic. People are staying home more than ever, and want their homes to be as nice as possible.

“I had a lady the other day say, ‘We normally travel 6 months out of the year, but we’re here in our home now. We’re not going anywhere,’ “ Heitz said. “It’s two-fold. They want to be in a home they enjoy and they love, but they also have money because they’re not spending it on things they normally would, like travel. It’s been a bonus for our industry.”

Heitz is doing what she can to keep that industry a healthy one. She has judged 4H interior design projects for several counties the past 5 years, and also judges design products at the Stephenson County Fair.

On the manufacturing side, Danlee partners with CareerTEC, a local organization that provides career guidance to six local school districts. There is also a Manufacturing Day at Highland Community College in Freeport, but that was pushed back to February.

“I think the industry is growing and sales have never been better,” Heitz said, “but I feel our high schools need to do a better job of training students to come into the industry. We have a lack of training for the trades.”

It was in high school, at Dubuque (Iowa) Wahlert, that Heitz got interested in what would become a career. She was involved in a building trades project.

“The boys built the home, and then we girls designed everything inside,” Heitz said. “That was my first taste of interior design. I did know in high school that I wanted to be an interior designer.”

Heitz resides in Freeport with her husband, Zack, and children Sophia, 10, and Ameliah, 7.

Oregon’s Ava Hackman competes at golf sectional

BY ERIC INGLES eingles@saukvalley.com OREGON – A year after winning its first regional title since 1987, the Dixon girls golf team made it two in a row on Oct. 7 at Silver Ridge.

The Duchesses shot a 349, beating second-place Rock Falls by 19 strokes.

A year ago at Lake Carroll, Dixon’s Bella Heintzelman lost in a one-hole playoff against Oregon’s Ava Hackman. This year, with the two playing in the same group, Heintzelman led wire-to-wire to claim medalist honors with a 2-over-par 74.

Meanwhile, with Hackman off to a rough start, scoring a 52 for the front nine, the player closest to upending Heintzelman was Rock Falls freshman Megan Fiorini.

Oregon as a team sat in third place much of the day before being passed by Geneseo late in the round. The Hawks’ 395 was good for fourth.

Hackman, who settled in late in the day with three straight pars on the back nine, finished eighth and qualified for next week’s sectional.

“I just had to focus in on the holes in front of me and leave the holes behind me that I already played,” Hackman said. “My drives were not great and my putting wasn’t great until the end.

I just had to read the greens better and use a different club off the tee, which worked pretty well.”

In addition to Hackman’s 94, Cassie Nyderek

shot a 98, missing the sectional cutoff by just one stroke.

Also for Oregon, Lena Trampel shot a 99, Mia Trampel shot a 104, Isabelle Olalde shot a 105 and Helena Holden-Fox shot a 119.

Polo was in ninth with a 456, led by a 107 from Kamryn Stockton.

Sectional Meet Megan Fiorin carded a 6-over-par 78 to finish fifth overall on Tuesday at the Class 1A Rock Falls Sectional at Rock River Golf and Pool.

The Rockets finished fourth as a team at the season-ending event; no state tournament will be played due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Dixon was fifth as a team with a 353. Rounding out the field were Winnebago (355), Kewanee (382) and Rockridge (397).

Oregon’s Ava Hackman, the lone area individual to compete, finished in a tie for 33rd place after carding a 22-over-par 94.

Rochelle’s Megan Thiravong wrapped up a four-year career spent mostly competing against boys with a 4-over-par 76, good for third place.

She birdied the 18th hole to conclude her round, but was undone by a quadruple-bogey 8 on the eighth hole and a double-bogey 5 on the 13th.

“I feel like I wasn’t focused on those two holes,” Thiravong said. “My positive mentality started to slip off the tee box. It’s just a mental mistake.”

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com Ogle County is one step closer to having a non-traditional resting place near one of its most popular state parks.

The Ogle County Zoning Board of Appeals unanimously approved a special use permit for Better Place Forests at its Sept. 24 meeting.

The business plans to purchase just over 50 acres of forest along the eastern banks of the Rock River for a conservation memorial forest, where customers can purchase a tree dedication for the exclusive right to rest cremains there.

The land is located at 1950 N. River Road, just north of the Lorado Taft Field Campus located in Lowden State Park.

Representatives from BPF attended the Sept. 24 meeting and addressed concerns from the board and local residents. The permit was approved with the stipulation that BPF adheres strictly to its current management plan in perpetuity.

The board’s concerns included BPF’s plan to get a conservation endowment and making sure it

The NLI would grant the conservation endowment. Its executive director, Kerry Leigh, wrote a letter to the board saying she was in support of the permit.

Dean Ankney, an adjoining property owner, attended the meeting

and stated concerns he has as a possible neighbor to the conservation forest.

“I’m concerned about ATV and hunting use,” Ankney said. “I’ve hunted around there for 20 years.

I’d like a 100-yard setback to prevent disturbances. Nobody wants a cemetery in their backyard. My property will be reduced in value.”

Oregon resident and member of

the Oregon Planning Commission Rick Ryland spoke in favor of the memorial forest. He worked maintenance on the property for 12 years.

“I’m thrilled BPF has taken an interest in preserving the land and removing invasive species,” Ryland said. “Trees won’t be cut down.”

BPF representatives also revealed additional details about its plans during the meeting. Its first phase would include removing invasive species to make the forest ecologically healthy to recreate trees in the future.

It was also said that many of the customers would be from outside Ogle County. They would patronize the businesses in town, and would also make for less visitor traffic in the forests, BPF representatives said.

The forest will be closed during the winter months. There are no current plans for a caretaker to live on the site. About 3,000-5,000 memorials are possible, and they’d be filled over 20 years. Many will likely be purchased years ahead of time by customers.

The Ogle County Board has yet to approve the permit.

18 To the Electors of the State of Illinois: The Illinois Constitution establishes a structure for government and laws. There are three ways to initiate change to the Illinois Constitution: (1) a constitutional convention may propose changes to any part; (2) the General Assembly may propose changes to any part; or (3) a petition initiative may propose amendments limited to structural and procedural subjects contained in the Legislative Article.

The people of Illinois must approve any changes to the Constitution before they become effective. The purpose of this document is to inform you of proposed changes to the Illinois Constitution and provide you with a brief explanation and a summary of the arguments in favor of and in opposition to the proposed amendment.

Proposed changes in the existing constitutional amendment are indicated by underscoring all new matter and by crossing with a line all matter which is to be deleted.

PROPOSED AMENDMENT TO SECTION 3 OF ARTICLE IX OF THE ILLINOIS CONSTITUTION ARTICLE IX – REVENUE SECTION 3. LIMITATIONS ON INCOME TAXATION (a) The General Assembly shall provide by law for the rate or rates of any tax on or measured by income imposed by the State. A tax on or measured by income shall be at a non-graduated rate. At any one time there may be no more than one such tax imposed by the State for State purposes on individuals and one such tax so imposed on corporations. In any such tax imposed upon corporations the highest rate shall not exceed the highest rate imposed on individuals by more than a ratio of 8 to 5. (b) Laws imposing taxes on or measured by income may adopt by reference provisions of the laws and regulations of the United States, as they then exist or thereafter may be changed, for the purpose of arriving at the amount of income upon which the tax is imposed.

EXPLANATION The proposed amendment grants the State authority to impose higher income tax rates on higher income levels, which is how the federal government and a majority of other states do it. The amendment would remove the portion of the Revenue Article of the Illinois Constitution that is sometimes referred to as the "flat tax," that requires all taxes on income to be at the same rate. The amendment does not itself change tax rates. It gives the State the ability to impose higher tax rates on those with higher income levels and lower tax rates on those with middle or lower income levels. You are asked to decide whether the proposed amendment should become a part of the Illinois Constitution.

ARGUMENTS IN FAVOR OF THE PROPOSED AMENDMENT Illinois' current tax system unfairly benefits millionaires and billionaires and this amendment will set things right for middle-class and working people. Currently, it is unfair that billionaires pay the same tax rate as regular people.

Voting "yes" on the amendment means that the State will enact a new tax structure where only those making above $250,000 a year will see their taxes go up. This amendment is simply upgrading Illinois' old tax system to a graduated system which is how the federal government and the majority of other states do it.

This Amendment Would Make Illinois' Tax System Fair.

Approval of this amendment would enact a fair system that allows the state to tax wealthy people at higher rates and lower income people at lower rates, replacing Illinois' current unfair tax system, in which wealthy people pay the exact same tax rate as lower and middle income people.

Illinois' current tax system unfairly benefits millionaires and billionaires, and approval of this amendment will set things right for the middle class and working people.

This amendment will help small business owners by creating a stable economic environment for their businesses to thrive.

While others try to mislead you, under the current tax system in Illinois, policymakers already have the authority to set any tax rate and to change tax rates at their will. The current system forces policymakers to charge the same tax rate to everyone, regardless of how much money they make. If this amendment passes, the State will have the ability to tax higher income earners at a different rate.

In fact, upon passage of this Amendment, a new tax structure will go into effect where 97% of taxpayers will pay the same or less, while only those making more than $250,000 a year will see a tax increase. This amendment does not tax retirement income.

The Federal Government and Most States Use the Graduated Tax System Proposed in this Amendment, Not the Unfair System Currently Used in Illinois.

Illinois is among a minority of states that do not utilize graduated tax rates because the Illinois Constitution requires a "flat tax" that penalizes middle-class and working people and benefits higher income individuals.

A majority of states and the federal government already use the kind of graduated income tax system proposed in this amendment to ensure that wealthy people pay their fair share of taxes.

Nearby states including Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, and Wisconsin are among the majority of states that have graduated tax systems.

Illinois' Current Income Tax System Relies on Taxes from Middle and Lower Income Earners, While a Graduated System Would Lower that Burden and Fund Critical Programs such as Education and Human Services.

While some states have fair tax rates in which the highest income earners pay the highest tax rate, Illinois' "flat tax" rate continues to rely unfairly on taxes from middle and lower income earners.

Under Illinois' "flat tax" structure, a nurse making $50,000 per year pays the same tax rate as an executive making $4 million per year. A graduated tax rate would have the executive pay more.

Because of the way our current tax system is set up, the bottom fifth of Illinois taxpayers (those making below $21,800) contribute 14.4% of their income to state and local taxes, compared to 7.4% for the top 1 percent of Illinois taxpayers.

If this Amendment passes, the State has already enacted a new graduated tax structure where 97% of taxpayers will pay the same or less.

Under the new tax structure, only the top 3% of Illinois income earners would pay more in income taxes. Everyone who makes $250,000 or less a year would pay the same or less.

Over 95% of small businesses earn $250,000 or less a year in profits, and their owners will not see a tax increase under the new tax structure.

This change will generate additional revenue each year that can help address Illinois' budget deficit and fund critical programs, including the State's education system, public safety, and social services like mental health and substance abuse treatment and domestic violence shelters.

After the COVID-19 Pandemic, We Need to Do All We Can to Help the Economy and Middle-Class and Working People.

Working people and essential workers like nurses, first responders, and grocery store clerks should not pay the same tax rate as the wealthy. Nurses making $50,000 a year should not pay the same tax rate as an executive making $4,000,000 a year.

Having wealthy people pay more would reduce the burden on working families. This is money that middle and lower income people need for housing, groceries, medicine, and essentials.

When the wealthiest people pay more, middle and lower income earners can pay less while the State funds critical services that our essential workers rely on.

ARGUMENTS AGAINST THE PROPOSED AMENDMENT 1) The Amendment gives the Legislature power to increase taxes on any group of taxpayers with no limits and no accountability and without any requirement to use the additional revenue to fund essential needs such as healthcare, education, or public safety.

2) Taxes and spending are out of control. The Legislature should not be allowed to keep raising taxes until they get their spending under control.

3) In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, now is the worst possible time for a massive tax increase.

The Amendment gives the Legislature power to increase taxes on any group of taxpayers with no limits and no accountability and without any requirement to use the additional revenue to fund essential needs such as healthcare, education, or public safety.

The proposed amendment would give the Legislature unlimited new authority to increase income tax rates on any group of taxpayers at will, including low-income and middle-income families and small business owners. There would be no limit on the number of tax brackets that could be created and no limit on how high tax rates could be increased on individual taxpayers. In addition, this proposed change will pave the way for a tax on retirement income.

Nothing in the amendment requires the Legislature to do anything to control spending. Nor does it require funds to be spent on essential needs such as healthcare, education, or public safety. It would simply give the Legislature a blank check to spend billions of dollars however they want, with no accountability.

Taxes and spending are out of control. The Legislature should not be allowed to keep raising taxes until they get their spending under control.

Illinois already has some of the highest property taxes and sales taxes in the nation. And the Legislature has increased Illinois income tax rates twice in the past decade to try to deal with the out-ofcontrol spending in Springfield.

Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, our state had a huge and growing multi-billion-dollar budget deficit, and the unfunded pension liability skyrocketed to over $137 billion. That's because the Legislature has continued to increase state spending instead of eliminating government waste, corruption, and abuse.

Because they refuse to control spending or pass major reforms, the Legislature will just continue to raise taxes on everyone in Illinois, and middle-class families will be their next target.

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, now is the worst possible time for a massive tax increase.

The COVID-19 pandemic caused layoffs, unemployment, bankruptcies, and closures. As small businesses and local employers struggle to rebuild, this is the worst possible time to impose huge new tax increases. Even before the COVID-19 crisis, many residents and businesses were leaving the state because of the high tax burden. If the Amendment passes, it would be the last straw for thousands of small businesses, causing more jobs to leave the state, and making Illinois lose out on investments to rebuild our economy. This would mean fewer jobs and less opportunity for Illinois families.

The Oregon Woman’s Club has donated a selection of books aimed at readers aged 6-10 to the Oregon Public Library in honor of Diane Gorski, who was a member of the club for many years.

Gorski passed away on June 25 of this year. She taught at Lincoln Elementary School in St. Charles, for 22 years. She and her late husband moved to Oregon in 2001.

Karla Belzer, an educator with the University of Illinois, will conduct a seminar on mindfulness on Monday, Nov. 2, at 1 p.m. at the Rock River Center, 810 S. Tenth Street, in Oregon.

FORM OF BALLOT Proposed Amendment to the 1970 Illinois Constitution The proposed amendment grants the State authority to impose higher income tax rates on higher income levels, which is how the federal government and a majority of other states do it. Solar energy contractor, Stateline Solar, will reward an Illinois Solar Schools Grant to help schools install 1kW solar photo voltaic systems to teach students in kindergarten through 12th grade in public schools about solar energy.

The grant is open to all 501(c) (3) nonprofit organizations that are either a private school or educational organization that provides continuous educational services to help schools cover $6,500 or 90% of the cost for their display solar energy

system.

The company is offering to help any local school apply, design and install their system, and even provide educational materials and in-class presentations once social distancing rules subside.

This grant provides an opportunity for local area schools to educate students on renewable energy, construction of solar installations, and

a glimpse into an upcoming job industry.

OGLE COUNTY SHERIFF Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle reports the following police activity.

Oct. 6 Duane Leonard, 52, of Rockford was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. Leonard had a bond of $1,673.75 and went to court. The judge gave Leonard a $400 bond. Leonard posted bond and was released from the Ogle County Jail. He is scheduled to return to court on Nov. 30.

Kamal Abdallah, 46, of DeKalb was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. Abdallah had a bond of $8,762.14 and went to court. The judge gave Abdallah a $100 bond and Abdallah posted bond and was released from the Ogle County Jail with an Oct. 26 return date.

Oct. 7 Carolina Revuelta-Avalos, 45, of Rochelle was arrested at 11:45 p.m. for driving while license suspended after deputies conducted a traffic stop in the 11,000 block of East Illinois 38. Revuelta-Avalos was also issued a citation for an equipment violation. Revuelta-Avalos was issued and I-Bond and given a court date set for later next month.

Chase Clark, 27, of Byron was arrested at 7 p.m. for domestic battery, aggravated battery and interfering with the report of a domestic battery after deputies responded to the 8,000 block of North River Drive for a disturbance call.

Clark was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond. Deputies were assisted by the Illinois State Police.

Oct. 8 Jonathan Webb, 40, of Polo, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. Webb was unable to post the $527 full cash bond and remained in custody at the Ogle County Jail pending a court date.

Christina Galvan, 29, of Sterling was arrested at 10:41 p.m. for possession of methamphetamine, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug equipment, driving on a suspended license and an outstanding warrant after deputies conducted a traffic stop in the 13,000 block of West Illinois 64 for an equipment violation. Also arrested was Nancy Scudder, 30, of Rock Falls for possession of methamphetamine, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug equipment and an outstanding warrant.

Oct. 9 Michael Hensley, 31, of Mt. Morris was arrested at midnight for driving while under the influence of alcohol after deputies responded to the 3,000 block of North Brookville Road in reference to a suspicious vehicle. Hensley was also issued citations for unlawful parking and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

Hensley was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was released to correctional staff and held in lieu of bond.

Oct. 10 Michael Poff, 49, of Polo was arrested at 6:44 p.m. for driving while under the influence of alcohol after deputies responded to a one vehicle accident at the intersection of West Pines Road and South Evergreen Road. Poff was also issued a citation for operating an uninsured motor vehicle. Poff was transported to KSB Hospital where he was treated for non life-threatening injuries.

Poff was given an I-Bond with a return court date later next month. Ogle County was assisted by Polo EMS along with Polo Police Department.

Oct. 11

Michael Dixon, 21, of Davis Junction was arrested at 1:40 a.m. for domestic battery after deputies responded to the 700 block of Golden Prairie Drive in reference to a disturbance. Dixon was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was released to correctional staff and held in lieu of bond.

At 2:37 p.m. deputies and Lynn-Scott Rock Fire Dept. were dispatched to a two vehicle crash at Illinois 251 and Illinois 64. An investigation by deputies revealed that a Nissan SUV driven by Diana Lantz, 54, of Carol Stream was traveling west on Illinois 64 and failed to stop for the stop sign at the Illinois 251 intersection.

As a result the Nissan struck a Buick in the intersection which was traveling south on Illinois 251. The driver of the Buick, Samantha Metzger, 26, of Rochelle and her three passengers were transported by ambulance to the Rochelle Hospital.

Lantz was also transported by ambulance to the Rochelle Hospital. All of the injuries appeared to be non life-threatening. Lantz was cited for disobeying a stop sign. The Illinois State Police and Rochelle Fire Dept. assisted at the scene.

Participants can run, walk or cycle their way through LOMC or at any place in their community on their schedule. Those that participate are asked to make a $25 donation to LOMC and promote the benefit by email, social media or

otherwise and find sponsors that will donate in honor of their efforts in the 5K. Each participant needs sponsors.

Donors can join “teams” and choose an amount to donate in honor of their runner, walker or cycler.

LOMC is over 600 acres of prairie, hills, a pond, forest and more. The benefit is taking place to help combat losses due to COVID-19 including its summer programs.

This is to comment on the way Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle and the Ogle County Board is dealing with Sledgehammer’s, a new business in Ogle County.

The County Board has failed to have a noise ordinance in effect and the Sheriff’s Department has made 12 arrest for noise complaints for which there is no ordinance. They, of course have had to change the charge to disorderly conduct.

At the very lest, the County Board is guilty of neglect of duty and the sheriff’s department is guilty of harassment of Sledgehammers, encouraging people to file complaints, bullying, and unprofessional conduct.

In closing, I would address a comment made by the sheriff in regard to measuring noise. The most common measurement is in decibels and the sheriff indicated they couldn’t afford anything to measure the noise by ear. I believe this would be like having imaginary stop signs or guessing at car speeds.

I also will state, I have no connection with, nor have I ever been in Sledgehammer’s.

MT. MORRIS –Marjorie “Midge” M. Herman, 94, passed away on Thursday, October 8, 2020 in Pinecrest Community, with her children by her side.

Midge was born on Oct.19, 1925 in Chicago, the daughter of Howell Worth and Elisabeth (Sherer) Murray. She graduated from Highland Park High School, class of 1942; she received an associate’s degree from Monticello College and a bachelor’s degree from Carleton College, class of 1946.

Midge married Grant Herman on Feb. 21, 1948 in Highland Park and he preceded her in death on March 5, 2008.

BARBARA PETERSON MT. MORRIS – Barbara E. Peterson, 86, passed away on Monday, October 12, 2020 in Pinecrest Manor Nursing Home, Mt. Morris.

Barbara was born on September 20, 1934 in Polo, the daughter of Thomas Glenn and Pauline (Davison) James. She graduated from Oregon High School class of 1952.

BY BRIAN WEIDMAN bweidman@saukvalley.com STERLING – Right now, the front of the building at 3200 East Lincolnway in Sterling looks like a derecho slammed into it.

The southeast corner of the structure is exposed, and piles of dirt are everywhere.

A few months from now, this work in progress will be a distant memory.

The exposed part of the structure will be a showroom, displaying six of the company’s top-of-the-line vehicles.

Last October, the Kunes Country Auto Group finalized its purchase of the 55,000-square-foot facility, formerly the Sauk Valley Media building, with plans to move from its current location at 2502 Locust St. In 60 to 90 days, the transition should be complete, regional manager Tony Wheatley said.

“The progress is full speed ahead,” Wheatley said. “The contractors are here every single day. We were a little slow out of the gate with some design estimates, getting contractors and things like that, but once we got everything set, we were full speed ahead. They’ve been working every single day, and we plan to open as soon as we can.”

Bigger and better is the plan. More new and used cars will be on display in front of the building, close to Lincolnway, as well as behind the building on Lynn Boulevard. It is hoped sales will jump from about 100 cars a month to 200.

“When you build a new building, the manufacturer rewards you with more inventory,” Wheatley said.

The service area is more than doubling. There are now 10 bays at the facility on Locust. Once up and running in the new facility, 21 bays will be operational.

“It’s going to be a good opportunity,” parts and service manager Travis Tomman said. “We can basically double the amount of customers we bring in on a daily basis. Instead of maybe being a week out on a particular appointment for a customer, I’d like to be able to think we’d be able to get him in the same day. That’s going to improve the customer experience.”

Seventeen of the bays will be similar to the ones currently located at the Locust facility, with all new equipment. Four of the bays will be heavy duty, designed to handle trucks weighing up to 20,000 pounds.

“You’ve got a lot of local businesses ,and they’re using their vehicles day in and day out,” Tomman said.

“We’re hoping to help them maintain their vehicles. We can bring their

Sullivan Construction, based out of Madison, Wisconsin, is the lead contractor on the project. Subcontractors have all been locally hired, Wheatley said.

“We had a couple different walkthroughs and we invited all the local contractors,” Wheatley said. “It was very important to Gregg Kunes, the owner, and us as a company to make sure the people that were doing business here were local people in our community.”

Additional sales and service staff are expected to be hired once the new facility is up and running to handle the expected increase in business.

It makes for an exciting time for a dealership located in Sterling since spring 2015.

“The ultimate goal is to service our customers more efficiently,” Wheatley said. “That’s why we did it. To increase business, yes, but to serve the customers, make sure they’re having a good experience, and get them in and out quicker and more efficient.”
