Council approves TIF for new brewery Business plans to open this fall in downtown

BY JEFF HELFRICH ​​​​​​​jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com The Oregon City Council unanimously approved a TIF redevelopment agreement with Wiggale, LLC, the owners of the building that will house the new Ogle County Brewery.

The new business, which is slated to open this fall, is located on the corner of Illinois 64 and Illinois 2, in the old National Clothing Company building.

Wiggale, LLC partners Kevin Weigmann and Mark Gale remodeled the space, which dates back to the 1800s. The city’s TIF agreement with the pair will see rebates for the owners as the building appreciates and taxes get higher.

“The taxes on it will rise every year,” Oregon Mayor Ken Williams said.

“Those increase amounts will go into the TIF. We can rebate some of that to Wiggale, LLC. We will return to them 75 percent of the increase in taxes in two ways. We will allow $50,000 up front to be collected over 20 years in $2,500 a year.

After we collect $2,500, the remainder will be rebated to Wiggale, LLC. We can only guess at what the new appraisal will be.”

The microbrewery itself will be operated by Joshua Skinner, Brian Wynn and Mike Basciak. Its liquor license was recently approved by the city council.

The trio plans to have a variety of beers and “something for everyone.” Its products will be organic. Its products will include blueberry blondes, porters and IPAs. Skinner and Wynn are particularly passionate about “old-school” authentic German beers.

IN BRIEF Book sale at Oregon library The Friends of the Oregon Library’s is holding its book sale this month.

“You get a bag that is full of books along a similar theme, topic, or story line, such as mysteries or romance or gardening,” said Sherry Piros, representing the Friends of the Oregon Library. “Just put $5 in the cash box on the Friends’ shelf in the fireplace room.

There’s a lot of good reading awaiting you!”

“This is an opportunity to restock your shelves, and to enable the Friends of the Library to continue sponsoring the programs, purchases of equipment, and other events for the Oregon community,” Piros said.

The bag containing the books is a classy, navy blue, re-useable tote with Friends of the Oregon Library printed on one side.

“There are more books in each bag, 8 to 10 books per bag for adult reading and more books than that for children to read,” said Piros. “Each bag will be labeled as to category, for example: fiction, children’s, large print, paper backs, etc.

And finally, you can pay for your grab bag by putting $5 cash or check into the cash box on the Friend’s shelf in the fireplace

room.

Oregon to flush fire hydrants

The City of Oregon will be flushing hydrants in September and October.

Fire hydrants north of Illinois 64 and east of the river will be flushed between Sept.

14-18 and Sept. 21-25.

Fire hydrants south of Illinois 64 will be flushed between Sept. 28 through Oct. 2 and Oct. 5-9.

Water department officials recommend doing “whites” either late in the evening or on the weekends to avoid rusty water.

Project Humane Polo wants to establish TNR program in city

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com A group of Polo citizens has organized as Project Humane Polo in response to the city council’s recent ordinance aimed at controlling the city’s feral cat population.

Multiple Polo residents raised concerns to the city council at a Sept. 17 meeting regarding a recent ordinance passed with the intention of controlling the city’s feral cat population.

The ordinance includes fines for people feeding cats outdoors and limits the number of animals that can be “owned” to four.

Residents Ashley Rinehart, Penny Burkart, Pam Shore and Cheryl Galor are working with Happy Tails Humane Society President Mark Razo on the project.

Project Humane Polo has requests of the city council that include a discussion with “mutual respect,” a commitment to humane solutions with animal issues and working together to implement a trap neuter release program to manage the cat population.

The city has said it’s considered a TNR program at recent meetings, but having to spend money on one has been an issue. Project Humane Polo has said it would work to raise

Project Humane Polo believes feed ban laws and ordinances are an “ineffective and cruel” approach to feral cats.

Feral cats have long been an issue in the Polo council chambers.

“People are sick and tired of cats

being in and defecating in their yard and finding them, some dead,” Alderman Randy Schoon said at the Sept. 17 meeting. “It’s a problem.

People feed them and people leave that food out. It attracts cats and more animals. It’s a problem in this town and it needs to stop.”

Project Humane Polo will be working with Razo and Happy Tails going forward and is preparing a presentation to make to the city council, likely at its Sept. 21 meeting.

Another Sledgehammers’ noise complaint arrest Pub manager is arrested for disorderly conduct on Sept. 4

BY JEFF HELFRICH ​​​​​​​jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com Another Sledgehammer’s bar employee has been arrested for disorderly conduct stemming from a noise complaint.

Justin Coltrain, listed in the Ogle County Sheriff’s arrest report as Sledgehammer’s pub manager, was arrested on Sept. 4 at the 1450 North Illinois 2 location and released on an I-Bond to appear in court at a later date.

Pub Manager Melissa Wall have each been arrested twice in recent weeks for disorderly conduct stemming from noise complaints.

The Ogle County Board is currently working on a county noise ordinance that could be approved

at its Sept. 15 meeting due to the complaints that have come from Sledgehammer’s “every weekend” this summer according to Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle.

VanVickle told Ogle County Newspapers last week that he plans to continue to make arrests if complaints continue and there are residents willing to press charges.

The reason different Sledgehammer’s employees are being arrested is that Stombaugh could lose his gaming license if he’s arrested for a third time, VanVickle said.

Stombaugh and Wall say they have reached out to the Sheriff’s Office multiple times to meet to resolve the situation, but it has not been receptive. Stombaugh said he’s spent the summer moving bands and speakers to alleviate the complaints.

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com The Oregon U Store storage facility at 2897 E. Illinois 64 is a “total loss” after an early morning fourth alarm fire on Sept.

4, Oregon Fire Chief Michael Knoup said.

The call came in at 3:25 a.m. and took approximately four hours to extinguish, Knoup said. Fire crews were still on the scene at 9 a.m. The cause of the fire is undetermined and under investigation.

Fire crews from Mt. Morris, Byron, Stillman Valley, Polo, Ashton, Franklin Center, Rochelle, Cherry Valley, Leaf River and Pecatonica assisted at the scene. A lack of hydrants in the area required water to be hauled to the site.

There were no injuries sustained due to the fire. The building is 40 feet by 200 feet.

Its construction made things difficult for firefighters Friday morning.

“Those pole barn-type construction buildings are tough,” Knoup said. “Steel falls on everything and you can’t get to the fire.”

BY BETTY OBENDORF Curator, Polo Historical Society After I found the war record of Daniel Roby, I wanted to find out about his parents, Sarah Coffman Roby and James Roby.

Linda can find for me the genealogy of a family on the Internet but not the history of the family. That you will find at the library in the obituaries.

I have not been going to the library because of the virus. But Linda did find out about someone in the Roby family already doing research on the family. So I emailed John Davenport and he was glad to hear from me.

He did not have some of these family pictures and someday I will send him the packet of pictures. But for now he could send me the history and answer some of my questions about the family.

Sarah was born to Christian and Elizabeth Chapman Coffman. She was born on Feb. 6, 1815 in Hagerstown, Pennsylvania. She also was called Sallie Coffman Roby. The early last name was “Kaufman.”

Sarah and James Roby were married in 1836. It was not until 1851 that several of the Roby family headed for Illinois. Sarah and James along with their family were among those who traveled west. At that time the rest of the Coffman family stayed in the east.

The family of Sarah and James were Ann 1836-deceased, James Jr. 1839-deceased, David (Daniel)-1840-1862, Sarah Jane 1842-1925, Mary Catherine 1847-1926, Susan 1850-1933, Simon 1853-deceased, Elizabeth 1855-1926, George 1857-1920, and Arthur 1861-1938.

The Roby family members that traveled west were farmers and they settled in Rockvale Township of Ogle County.

Sarah Roby In 1861 Daniel would have left for the Civil War with the 15th Regiment. He signed up at the Presbyterian Church in Polo to go with Company H. After 1865 the whole Roby family headed for Iowa and lived near Lincoln, Iowa in Grundy County.

John Davenport found no evidence of any of the family having stayed in Illinois. Some of them did move over into Nebraska and so they traveled back and forth.

John Davenport’s great grandfather married the oldest daughter of Sarah and James in 1883 in Iowa.

She had been married once before to Russell Morrow and he had died in 1881. So that was John’s connection to the Roby family.

John described the Roby family as “hardy, patriotic, and ambitious folk who sacrificed a son in the Civil War when living in Illinois.”

Sarah Coffman died Feb. 5, 1905 at the age of 90. She died in Springview, Nebraska. Her husband had already died April 19, 1898.

Sarah had many brothers and sisters. The children in the family of Christian and Elizabeth Chapman

Coffman were: James Coffman 17921848, Elizabeth Coffman 1793-1815, Elizabeth Coffman 1796-Deceased, Daniel Coffman 1801-1852, Henry Coffman 1801-1877, Ellen Coffman 1805-1892, Rachel Minkiny Coffman-1806-1858, David Coffman 18061885, Christopher Coffman 1806-1904, John C. Coffman 1811-1896, Sarah Coffman 1815-1905, Mary Coffman 1815-Deceased, George Coffman 1817-Deceased, Sallie Coffman 1819-Deceased.

A number of the Coffman family eventually made their way to this area with a number of them staying.

Ogle voted for township organization in 1869 Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon has researched the people, places and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is one of a series of the articles he has written.

BY OTTO DICK In 1818 when Illinois became the 21st state in the Union, we were divided into 15 counties with what is now Ogle County, being a part of three counties, Madison, Bond and Crawford counties.

Now there are 102 counties in the state of Illinois. Most counties in Illinois were named after early American leaders, especially of the American Revolutionary War era.

Township government was America’s oldest form of government. This form of government was created in Illinois by the state constitution in 1848.

Each county in Illinois was given the option to choose between the township or the county commission form of government.

Nov. 6, 1869 the electorate of Ogle County voted for township organization 1,024 to 50. The county was divided into 20 townships by William Walmsley, Henry Hill and Daniel Pinchney.Today there are 24 Ogle County Townships.

Ogle County is one of 85 counties in the state which chose the township form of government. The remaining 17 counties do not have townships.

Illinois townships hold annual meetings on the second Tuesday of each April.

There have been several changes in township boundaries with new townships formed from our larger townships. Some changed their names.

Rockvale Township underwent two name changes.

Originally it was called Charlotte, later Brooklyn and finally Rockvale. The most recent change came in 1993 when

Marilyn and I are enjoying drives through Ogle County Townships.

We locate the cemeteries, churches, schools, towns, depots, bridges, historic homes, creeks, historic signs and roads.

We have been amazed at the number of single lane gravel roads. One road on the Carroll and Ogle County border had two names. The east half in Ogle had one name and the west half of the same road in Carroll

County had a different name.

So you could be driving down the center of the road with two names.

One little town must have cats at every house. I wonder how many people in Oregon have at some time or other driven on roads in each township in Ogle County. I have lived in Oregon 69 years and now we are visiting several townships for the first time.

During our evening drives it is interesting talking to the local residents. I explain who we are and why we stopped by.

The majority of them are friendly and enjoy telling us the history of their family and interesting happenings in their neighborhood. Recently one gentleman looked at me and said, “You’re Mr. Dick, you were my teacher at Dixon High School”.

Viewing the Ogle Township map, most of the townships contain 36 one mile sections. Six townships that border Lee and Carroll Counties contain approximately 18 square mile sections.

Ogle County is divided by the Third Principal Meridian with six townships located on the east side. The six eastern townships were laid out by the Governmental Survey using the 3rd Principal Meridian with the remaining western townships surveyed in the 4th Principal Meridian.

This explains why the east-west township lines do not meet at Meridian Road in Ogle County.

Finally Oregon Township is located between Pine Creek Township on our west border and Pine Rock Township on our east border (between water and rocks).

ecently, Erin Sellers posted a classic photo on Facebook of Dale Hall, Terry Olson, Dwight Sellers and Bill Jenkins standing together on the Polo practice football field.

Those four men impacted the young, impressionable minds of Marco students and athletes from the late 60s into the 1990s.

As we witness an absence of discipline at a nationwide level among today’s young people, I was struck by how different times were in Polo during that era.

Or, should we say how much better they were.

To be sure, Polo didn’t have that market on this. I grew up under a father just like these men and I’m sure every school around had similar leaders.

Here are a few snippets of the comments made

by Polo grads: The Marco dream team, Hallof-Famers, legends, four great men, taught me many things over the years, life lessens, love and respect, highest character, timeouts not their style, privilege to play for them, fun to be around, admiration, etc.

Robert Smith may have put it best when he said he would have tried to move mountains for them.

There you have it. Nearly 100 testimonies from adults who saw their lives changed because of the discipline installed in them by Hall, Olson, Sellers and Jenkins. And, it went far beyond discipline.

There was so much good-natured humor, the type that wouldn’t be as politically-correct these days. But, that was before the age of entitlement or complaining to mom and dad if you didn’t agree with what a teacher or coach said to you.

At the time, you may not have liked what the Four Horsemen (as another poster referred to them as) had to say, but it was the truth. It might have hurt your feelings or caused indignation, but without a doubt you became a better person because of the wisdom imparted.

Sadly, that has gone missing in today’s public education morass starting from kindergarten all the way to high school.

My elementary teacher wife was nowhere near the Polo foursome when it came to really laying the hammer down, but as the years progressed, even she shared her frustration of more and more roadblocks to disciplining troublemakers and the disruption it would create for a proper teaching environment.

All kids have the potential to be troublesome.

Every time I was sent to the principal’s office, I deserved what I got.

At home, it was plenty of mouth-washings, spankings and groundings. What seemed harsh later yielded fruits.

Proverbs state that adults must be diligent to discipline children because of love for them. But, the Word of God was kicked out public schools long ago.

Instead, a softer, gentler form of behavior that spares the rod has been installed.

One Facebook poster said you were lucky not to be introduced to some kind of marble coated paddle at Polo - the “board of education”, so to speak.

The discipline meted out by Hall, Olson, Sellers and Jenkins was done not so much corporally, but measured in love. They knew the importance of respect for authority, hard work and not blaming others for your problems and made it their life’s work to instill those values in young people.

But, this was before lawyers swooped in and expanded the rights of students. Add in therapy-based tripe and schools have seen their ability to discipline reduced.

Instead of a kid’s legal rights and what the psychologist says, what about returning to a common sense approach to moralistic living?

Would these four gentlemen get by with their style of educating in today’s world?

BERTOLET LIBRARY Wednesday WhoDunIt This is a ‘Wednesday WhoDunIt’ book discussion group. It’s Reader’s Choice Month: pick any mystery book to read this month and be ready to share your recommendation at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23. We will meet outside if weather permits; if not, the discussion will be held, socially-distanced, in the library meeting room. Masks will be required. Bring a friend. No registration is necessary.

Family Story Time We now have time slots available for a private Story Time session with our new youth director, Jana Schlukebir.

These sessions will be held weekly beginning Aug. 6 and will be 20-30 minutes long. Each week will include a story and an art project. Here is what

Wiggly Wag & Walk returns to Oregon dog park Register by Sept. 13 for Sept. 16 event

The 8th Annual Wiggly Wag and Walk will be held on Wednesday, Sept.

16, at Wiggly Field Dog Park from 5-6:30 p.m.

“This is a great event for you and your dog!,” said Debbie Leffelman, event coordinator. “Take your pooch on the Hound Hike for fun, exercise, and a chance to win a prize.”

All dogs registered for the event will receive a goodie bag. The fee for the Hound Hike is $4 for residents of the Oregon Park District and $5 for others.

The fee for each additional dog in a family is $3.

“The hike starts at staggered times to allow for social distancing,” Leffelman said. “You do not have to have a Wiggly Field membership to partici-

pate in the fun.”

The membership is only required for dogs entering the enclosed runs at the park. The deadline to register is Sept. 13.

About Wiggly Field Wiggly Field Dog Park officially opened in July 2012 and is the first offleash dog park operated by the park district.

The dog park is a 1 acre fenced offleash area with two separate entries for safety. The park is divided into two separate areas. The first being an open running design and the second is an agility training area.

The park offers water fountains for people and dogs. Wiggly Field off-leash dog park is open seven days a week from dawn until dusk. We ask all owners to have fun, but be responsible.

During regular hours of operation, all users and dogs must have a permit, available at the Nash Recreation Center in Oregon. Proof of rabies vaccination is also required when registering.

Fees are $5 for residents of the park district and $6 for others.

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com The Ogle County Health Department reported 20 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, Sept. 8 totaling 554. Recoveries of documented cases stand at 473. There were three new cases to report Saturday, five on Sunday, zero on Monday and 12 from Tuesday. The OCHD reported its fifth death in the county on July 10, its first since June 1.

Ages and locations of the individuals are not being released to protect their privacy. The Illinois Department of Public Health site said Tuesday that there are 245 cases in the 61068 zip code that includes Rochelle, Creston and White Rock. Stillman Valley’s zip code, 61084, has 25 cases in it according to the IDPH site.

Byron’s zip code, 61010, has 74 cases. Davis Junction (61020) has 24 cases. The zip codes that house Oregon (61061) and Mt. Morris (61054) have 51 and 40 cases, respectively. Polo’s zip code, 61064, has 28 cases in it.

Leaf River (61047) has 11 cases.

For the second time in two days, the Whiteside County Health Department has issued an alert about a potential COVID-19 exposure involving a bar, this time in Fulton.

The Whiteside County Health Department is working with Denny O’s in Fulton after an asymptomatic individual who was later determined positive, visited the main bar during their infectious period, health officials said in a Sunday news release. “After working with the location to review the situation, we have decided to issue a general release. This is due to the extended potential for exposure, typical visit duration and difficulty identifying all close contacts. We are working with Denny O’s to review plans and ensure a safe environment and appreciate their efforts working to physically distance within the establishment,� the release said.

Exposures may have occurred Saturday, Sept. 5, between 1 and 5 p.m. Health officials believe there is “minimal risk to the majority

of customers�, the release said.

On Saturday, health officials issued a news release stating they were working with the Boulevard Pub and Grill in Sterling, after a symptomatic individual, who later tested positive for COVID19, visited an outdoor event while infectious.

The only known exposure at that location occurred at the outdoor event on Saturday, Aug. 29 between 7 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. “COVID-19 will continue to be a concern for the foreseeable future, so it is the responsibility of every individual to work with and protect local businesses by following their instructions, Illinois Executive Orders and Restore Illinois Guidelines,� the

Sunday release said.

Health department officials reminded residents that every interaction carries some level of risk. “This risk is increased anytime individuals are attending events with symptoms of COVID-19, not physically distancing [6 feet or more], not masked, present for an extended duration, spending time around people they do not know or indoors. A workplace, private gathering at someone’s home, or closed event where protective measures are not observed is just as risky; however, COVID19 cases are more easily able to name their contacts so releases are not issued. “Individuals who visit or visited other times, or were not in the main bar, are not at risk due to this exposure,� the release said. “Individuals most at risk are those who did not follow Illinois Executive Orders and Restore Illinois Guidelines or were within 6 feet of a positive case for 15 minutes or more and are considered close contacts.�

Bison rock the prairie over Labor Day weekend

BY EARLEEN HINTON ehinton@oglecountynews.com’ A walk through the water or a roll in the dirt. Those were just two of the Labor Day weekend choices made by some of the bison at the Nachusa Grasslands on Saturday.

As temperatures climbed near 80 degrees, several members of the Grasslands’ wild conservation herd made their way to the pond area just below the interpretative visitor center off of Lowden Road.

Some took dust baths at the edge of the pond exhibiting wallowing behavior to relieve skin irritations or to seek relief from biting insects.

Others, some with calves in tow, walked quietly across the shallow pond to graze on the other side.

Either way, they put on a show for visitors.

“Look there they are,” said Carrie Crago of Gurnee as she pointed to the bison while holding her son Joshua. Her husband, Brian, watched from the family’s vehicle as Cameron, Joshua’s brother, sat on the vehicle’s roof zooming in on the herd with binoculars.

“We’ve been up at the interpretive center, but it’s great to actually see the bison today,” Carrie said.

The pond is just part of 1,500 acres on which the bison can roam.

Nachusa Grasslands, owned by The Nature Conservancy, encompasses 3,800 acres of natural prairie east of Dixon, along Lowden Road, near Franklin Grove.

The herd roams across a fenced-in 1,500 acres and can sometimes be seen from public roads or from the visitor center.

No hiking is permitted inside the fenced bison unit. Other areas of the preserve are open dawn to dusk for hiking. Dogs and other pets are not allowed in the preserve.

Officially named North America’s first national mammal in 2016, bison were reintroduced at the Grasslands in October 2014 to help restore the prairie and encourage habitat for other prairie species.

Today’s herd is comprised of around 150 animals, with calves arriving each spring. On Saturday, bison of all sizes and ages could be seen from the gravel parking lot along Lowden Road.

“Cool,” said one woman as she watched with binoculars while standing in the back of a pickup truck.

The open-air visitor center, located at 2075 Lowden Road, Franklin Grove, offers interpretive panels explaining Nachusa’s prairie, woodland, and wetland ecosystems as

well as the ongoing attempts to protect them.

The center also includes bison information, a walking trail, parking area, and bathrooms. It is open from dawn to dusk each day.

The Grasslands are also open from

dawn to dusk with hiking allowed in non-fenced areas. Social distancing of six feet apart is required.

She said she wanted to run for the U.S. House in the Illinois 16th District after seeing how things that were hard economically for her family when she was growing up were getting harder for everyone.

The stops were part of a tour of outdoor events for the Democrat challenging U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Channahon, in November.

“We are obviously campaigning during a pandemic, largely in isolation, and wanted to make sure that we get as many opportunities as possible for voters to interact with me directly,” Brzozowski said. “I think accessibility is tremendously important and, though that has been a challenge, I think this park tour has given us an opportunity to rise to that challenge and give people a safe, socially distant [event].”

She also called out reported comments by Donald Trump referring to service members killed in World War I as “losers” and “suckers,” according to anonymous sources.

Kinzinger on Friday called out the use of anonymous sources, but also said, in a statement posted on Twit-

ter, “the recent reports about comments made by President Trump regarding our fallen service members is deeply concerning, and has left me speechless. This is either the most heinous hit job on a president, or the most heinous comments made by a president.”

Brzozowski on Sunday called out Trump, but also called out Kinzinger for that response, saying “I think Kinzinger’s inability to wholly condemn those comments, that he would question their veracity, we don’t need to pretend, we have a president who has done some ill-advised, some gross things, not just over the course of the administration, but the campaign preceding it and the course of a lengthy career in the public eye. We know that the president of the United States of America says gross stuff. It’s not news. Kinzinger shouldn’t be surprised by it. ... That kind of tacit defense of the president is inexcusable, particularly inexcusable on this topic.”

Ogle County is seeing spike in mail-in ballots Current count stands at 5,529, compared to 500-700 in previous election years

The number of mail-in registrants stood at 5,529 as of Sept. 3. Usually, it’s between 500-700. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused voters to rethink their habits.

“This is nothing like we’ve seen, even in 2016 when people came out of the woodwork in the count,” Ogle County Clerk Laura Cook said. “It’s stressful on the staff and we can’t get to other stuff. We’re calling people who got things wrong on their mail-in ballot. We have extra people coming in part-time to help out. I’m not sure what the number will be by the election. We’re getting 50-100 a day. It depends on COVID-19.”

She called for banning Super PACs, the groups that campaign often on behalf of a candidate using money from corporations, as well as dark money, money raised with no identifiable source.

She also is calling for publicly financed campaigns in order to avoid situations where a candidate can reel in big-money donations.

“Big money in politics has so significantly corrupted the integrity of our democracy that it really is barely recognizable as such,” she said. “I evaluate every policy against a set of values, and the big one here, the chief value, is does this restore power to people or does it

Cook’s fear about mail-in ballots is that they could confuse voters. Some have said they’re getting it just in case they decide not to go out on election day.

“They can’t just walk into their polling place and vote when they have that,” Cook said. “They have to surrender it. I want to get the word out on that and we’ve been putting flyers with them when we send them out.”

Cook said Ogle County learned from March’s election day and plans to be more prepared in November. Cleaning products, which were in short supply during the start of the pandemic, will be easier to get this time.

Some counties have been moving polling places out of locations like senior centers to reduce risk for at-risk populations. Ogle does not have any polling locations at places like that.

It did move one polling location. Polling will now take place in Oregon at the Methodist Church rather than at Nash Recreation Center. The Oregon Park District didn’t want the entire building used and offered only the lobby.

That arrangement made for a tight fit back in March and won’t be done again.

“I can’t put the election judges through that again,” Cook said. “We moved it to the Methodist

Church. All the other places are pretty good spacewise and will just have to set up differently.”

The county will also be installing a secure ballot drop-off box at the courthouse for voters who wish to vote by mail and choose not to use the United States Postal Service. Ballots placed in the drop box will be collected twice daily by the election staff and stamped as received.

“It hasn’t been installed yet but it will be by early voting,” Cook said. “The response to it has been good.”

Cook said issues with the post office may end up impacting Ogle County. She also addressed President Trump’s comments in North Carolina, where he told voters to try to vote twice in the election, once by mail and once in person.

“I think it’s a reckless comment,” Cook said.

“He should be trying to help our system. The repercussions of that will be dramatic.”

The Ogle County voting turnout on Nov. 3 will be hard to predict, Cook said. Especially coming off its highest percentage of turnout in 2016 (73 percent).

“It’s hard to say,” Cook said. “I have a feeling it’ll be close to that or even more than it, even with COVID-19. I think people really want to vote.”

Another change she hopes to see in the political process is making things easier to actually get people to the polls.

She told supporters she feels there needs to be a change in mindset to make younger people feel there is a responsibility, not just a right, to vote.

“I’m for anything that increases access to voting,” she said. “I think the more people we have participating in the electoral process the better. It’s more democratic the more people we have actually turning out to vote.”

Brzozowski said she is hopeful the change in demographics in the Illinois 16th will lead to better results for her than those seen by Sara Dady, the Democratic Party nominee in 2018 who garnered 40.9% of the vote in her bid to unseat Kinzinger.

First complete teams for Polo High School since 2007 and 2011

BY BRIAN WEIDMAN bweidman@saukvalley.com Polo sophomores Carson Jones and Bekah Zeigler were set to help their school’s football and volleyball teams achieve success this fall.

They’re still giving it their all for the Marcos, but now it’s traversing hills and flats, 3 miles at a time.

Jones and Zeigler are part of complete boys and girls cross country teams in Polo, which is some rare air.

The boys last had a complete team in 2007, while for the girls, it was 2011.

There have been individuals competing since then, but not complete teams – until now.

When the Illinois High School Association pushed back the fall’s two biggest sports, football and volleyball, on July 29 due to COVID-19 concerns, many athletes faced tough decisions. It was either try a sport that might not necessarily be their specialty, or wait until the winter sports came around.

For Jones, Zeigler and several other Marcos, their choice was to run. Jones had spent all summer getting ready for football, but had to quickly change course.

“It started out pretty hard, but now I’m in shape and I feel good now,” Jones said.

Four out of five members of the boys team (sophomores Jones and Avery Grenoble, junior Wyatt Queckboerner and freshman Carter Merdian) have a football background. Ben Plachno, a sophomore, is the only runner without a gridiron past.

For Jones, the toughest part of running is on the mental side.

“If your head’s not in it, then you’re not in it,” Jones said. “If you’re thinking you’re going to quit or you’re thinking you don’t like it, then you’re

If you think you can, then you will.”

Zeigler agrees with Jones that the most difficult transition to cross country has been with between her ears, not with her legs.

“It’s more of a mental sport than any other sport I’ve played before,” said Zeigler, who competes in volleyball and basketball. “It’s definitely the hardest sport I’ve ever been in, but it’s also one of the more rewarding too. You’re contributing to your team, but you see the individual results right away. You’re competing with yourself. It just depends on how good you want to be.”

Zeigler and freshmen Ellie Wells and Courtney Grobe were part of a 4 x 100 relay team that qualified for state as Aplington Middle School students, so they do have some background in running, albeit in sprints.

Zeigler, Wells, Grobe and sophomore Teah Almasy were each going to be volleyball players.

The other female cross country runners this year are junior Linnea

Sundman and senior Kaylee Lowry.

The person in charge of getting the most out of this group is Tony Hardin, who coached cross country at Rockford Auburn the last 3 years before coming to Polo this school year. He is a PE teacher at Centennial Elementary School in Polo.

At the first practice back on Aug. 10, Hardin had four girls and two boys to work with, but has successfully recruited more athletes since.

That they weren’t necessarily runners to begin with does not concern him.

“Anytime you can get an athlete coming from another sport, you’re going to benefit from that,” Hardin said. “They’re already competitive.”

When practice began a month ago, Hardin had his runners run 1 mile.

The second day, it was a mile and a lap around the track, and the distance was slowly increased to build toward the first meet, on Sept. 3 at Pecatonica. All of the runners finished the race, with Jones and Zeigler leading the Marcos with fifth-place finishes.

Hardin was proud of his runners the first time out of gate.

“I think they learned a lot about the sport last week,” Hardin said, “but I think they learned even more about themselves, which is really important. They can keep pushing.

They can handle a lot of pain. They can do something they never thought they’d be able to do.”

Polo Athletic Director Ted Alston is pleased many Marcos are giving cross country a chance.

“As soon as this went down with the IHSA, I was sitting in my chair at home, I read the email, I looked at my wife and said, ‘I’m going to have to start a cross country team’ because I know there’s going to be kids that want to compete that aren’t going to be able to compete right now. I was excited about it.

“As a football coach, you don’t want to lose kids to cross country, but as an AD, you want kids doing what they want to do, what makes them happy and what helps them compete.”

OBITUARY VERLA MAE ATTIG POLO – Verla Mae Attig, 99, of Polo, passed away Saturday, Sept. 5, 2020 at Pinecrest Nursing Home in Mt. Morris.

She was born Dec 2, 1920 in Reddick, the third child of four siblings to Rev. George and Lulu (Morris) Wykle.

Verla was united in marriage to Denver E. Attig on March 16, 1940 in Washington, Illinois.

They bought a farm near Brookville and moved there shortly after.

Verla was a homemaker who enjoyed

cooking, gardening, and working in the local EUB Church in Brookville, where she often shared her talents.

One son and one daughter were born to them. In 1979, they retired from the farm life to a home in Polo where they lived out the rest of their lives being active in the local Evangelical United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister; two brothers; her husband Denver; and a son-in-law, Dale.

Verla was an excellent cook and really loved preparing meals for her family and

friends at her home in Polo.

Verla is survived by a son, Richard (Irene)Attig of Polo; a daughter, Nancy Keyt of China, Michigan; three grandchildren, Michael (Barbara) Attig of Sunnyvale, California, Dr. Amy (Scott) Shockley of Ionia, Michigan; and Brian Keyt of Greenville, South Carolina.

Also, she was survived by two great-grandsons, Kyle and Ryan Attig of Sunnyvale, California and also many nieces and nephews.

Due to the virus situation, a small private graveside service for the family

will be held at Fairmount Cemetery September 10, 2020.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund will be set up for the Faith United Methodist Church and Pinecrest Nursing Home.

The family would like to offer their sincere thanks for all the care and compassion given to Verla by the staff at Pinecrest Nursing Home and Serenity Hospice.

The northbound ramp of Interstate 39 at US 20 will be closed soon to allow for the construction of the ramp, outside lane of US 20.

The work, slated to begin this week, weather permitting, includes the shoulder and the ramp connectors.

The Illinois Department of Transportation said the closure is scheduled to last until Sept. 22.

“Message boards and detour signs will be placed in advance to notify the traveling public of the closures. I-39 northbound traffic should follow detour signs utilizing US 20 eastbound to the Harrison Avenue Interchange,” IDOT officials said in a press release.

Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area.
