Moring asks for help with recycling costs

jhelfrich@shawmedia.com The Oregon City Council heard a presentation from Moring Disposal, which handles garbage and recycling pickup in town, at its Tuesday meeting.

During the presentation Steve Moring told the council that his company is currently paying $95 a ton to dispose of recycling correctly. Moring approached the idea of the city helping out with that cost, as other cities have.

“We’re hoping to get financial help to help with that $95 a ton,” Moring said.

“Mt. Carroll gave us 34 cents, that was two years ago. Savanna gave us 95 cents.

Lanark we added price in, but it came out to about 60 cents per home. It’s kind of all over the board. We’re under con-

tract and will do it regardless of help.

Some towns have been good with help since they know it’s a problem. Those trucks lose money throughout the day.”

Public Health Commissioner Kurt Wilson said he’d discuss the idea with the council in the future. Moring said he doesn’t want to discourage anyone from recycling and believes the service will continue.

Moring said in the next few years facilities could open in Iowa and Indiana that could help with the cost of recycling.

China recently stopped taking recycling from the United States and caused problems for the market, Moring said.

“The recycling market has crashed,” Moring said. “A lot of people think we get paid for it, but that’s not the case. We

take it to Lanark and then Whitewater, Wisconsin.”

Grants City Administrator Darin DeHaan said the city has gotten two of three payments for the Downstate Small Business Stabilization Grants that will be distributed to local businesses to combat losses due to COVID-19 by Friday.

Iron Mike Mayor Ken Williams said there is still no word on when work will finish on the Iron Mike fountain.

The plumbing is in, Williams said, and just landscaping and brick are needed.

He said he hopes to have a finish date in 6 to 8 weeks.

Ogle recycling event cancelled The Ogle County Residential Electronics Recycling Collection Event, scheduled for Friday, Feb. 26, has been canceled by the Ogle County Solid Waste Management Department (OCSWMD).

POLO CITY COUNCIL

Polo council buys CedarStone building

jhelfrich@shawmedia.com The Polo City Council has accepted the bank’s counteroffer of $215,000 for the CedarStone building at 610 S. Division Avenue. The council approved the offer by a vote of 4-2 at a special meeting on Jan. 28. The city plans to use the building as a new city hall.

The city was under contract to purchase the property for $229,000 late last year before the deal expired due to the building being tied up in bankruptcy proceedings. At recent meetings the city made an offer of $175,000 which was countered by an offer of $225,000.

The city then offered $185,000 which led to the $215,000 counteroffer, which the bank said was its last and final.

Aldermen Keith Chesnut, Troy Boothe, Justin Grobe and Jim Busser voted in favor of the move while Randy Schoon and Donald Sanders Jr. voted no.

Boothe’s vote of yes was due to the high cost of other options like building a new city hall or costly renovations to another building in town.

“Why are we fighting over $15,000 when a new one could cost $1.2 million?”

Boothe said. “Do we have our feelings

hurt or what? What would plan B even be? It’s whether we want the building or not. If we do, I don’t have a problem with $215,000. If not, we’ll look at other things.

We’d be saving hundreds of thousands of dollars. And it’s $15,000 off our original offer. I think this is our last chance.”

Busser agreed and said the $15,000 saved from the original offer could be put towards renovations that would include getting the building up to Americans with Disabilities Act codes.

The ADA issues would include changes to parking, lowering countertops and work on a walkway outside.

Schoon was against paying $215,000

and said he was under the impression that the city’s $185,000 offer would be its last. He also said he was put off by the bank not being able to meet the original sale last year after title issues.

“They’ve tried to undercut and undermine us,” Schoon said. “I’m not a $215,000 guy. And they don’t want to talk anymore. It was their mistake to not get $229,000. I say we go back at $200,000 and we’re done. It upsets me we’re back in here again. It was supposed to be $185,000 and we’re done.”

City Attorney Tom Suits said it is possible the sale could go back to bankruptcy court and another 14-day appeal period like it did in the original sale contract. That’s why the closing date for the latest contract was moved out to May rather than in the next month or two.

The bank’s attorney will contact the bankruptcy trustee and see if it has to go back to bankruptcy court, Suits said.

“The bankruptcy court wants more to pay creditors,” Suits said. “They may have to go the court route and appeal again. The bank has a title, but not a clear title. We won’t proceed until it’s clear. They can’t give a clear title until bankruptcy court.”

Discovery not yet fully complete

jhelfrich@shawmedia.com The double-murder trial of a Stillman Valley man accused of murdering his ex-wife and 3-year-old son was continued again in Ogle County court on Monday.

Duane Meyer, 38, is charged with four counts of first degree homicide, two counts of aggravated arson and one count of concealment of a homicidal death in connection with an Oct. 9, 2016 house fire in which Maggie and Amos Meyer were killed.

Maggie, 31, was his ex-wife and Amos was his son. Maggie was found dead on a couch on the first floor of her burning home and Amos was pronounced dead a short time later at Rockford Memorial Hospital.

The continuance on Monday was agreed to by both parties and a new pre-trial conference is now set for March 26 at 2 p.m. Attorneys said the continuance will allow time to make sure discovery is complete.

Assistant Ogle County State’s Attorney Matthew Leisten was present in court along with Meyer’s attorney, Christopher DeRango, of Rockford.

Meyer appeared via video chat due to COVID-19 precautions. Meyer is currently being held in the Ogle County Jail on a $10 million bond.

“My office has been in communication making certain discovery

has been handled in an orderly and complete fashion,” DeRango said.

“There are some items both sides have narrowed down as potentially still outstanding. Mr. Leisten is working with local law enforcement to make sure we get all of those materials. I expect one more date should accomplish that.”

DeRango within two weeks. At most there should be “some minor disputes,” he said.

Judge John B. Roe said he plans to set aside time on the next court date to address discovery disputes if necessary.

There are 5-7 discovery issues outstanding at the moment, Leisten and DeRango said. Leisten said the sides are working together to make sure they have what they need.

Snow, ice, wind...county crews are battling it all

Winter weather makes for long days for drivers

ehinton@shawmedia.com Eating lunch while at sitting at your work desk might be the norm for some, but add in a steering wheel, a 12-foot plow, and lots and lots of white stuff and you’re inside Tim Merrell’s dining room.

Merrell, an employee of the Ogle County Highway Department, did just that on a sunny Tuesday afternoon when he swung his 26-ton snow plow into White Pines State Park along Pines Road for a quick lunch break.

“We’ve been battling the snow and wind for awhile,” he said sitting in the large diesel machine. “At least the wind is not blowing today.”

Merrell is part of the county’s 14-person crew who have either been out clearing hundreds of miles of county roads or back at the shop in Oregon making sure all the equipment is in working order.

“There have been some long, multiple days,” said County Engineer Jeremy Ciesiel, who oversees the highway department. “Some of our crew hasn’t had a day off for quite awhile, but they are holding up well.

So many of our crew have been through so many winters.”

Ciesiel said that experience helps, but keeping the county’s fleet of equipment road-ready has also become a challenge during the recent frigid temperatures.

“Our guys are holding up better than some of our equipment,” he said on Tuesday. “The extreme cold weather is hard on the equipment.”

Last week’s snowstorm, which dumped between 7-8 inches of snow in the county, was followed by wind gusts up to 35 mph and then followed by sub-zero temperatures prompting school closures across the county.

City dwellers sometimes don’t realize what county and township road crews are up against when snow and wind combine to make large drifts on rural roads.

“The drifting on rural roads might happen even if it does not snow,” said Ciesiel. “Our crews still have to go out to remove the snow from those drifted areas.”

County drivers usually log 10 hours a day and sometimes as many as 15 hours in a shift. “It’s rare when they have an 8-hour day,” Ciesiel

said.

Some eat their lunch or dinner in their trucks if they are plowing roads in areas without restaurant services.

“During the pandemic (mitigations) they could not go into restaurants for indoor dining,” Ciesiel said. “It is nice for the drivers to get out for a bit and stretch their legs, walk about, and take a break.

“Now with the indoor dining being allowed again, some can stop and go in and get warm. Some of the

routes are so far away from Oregon that they have to take their lunch out with them,” Ciesiel said.

The highway department is also waiting for more salt to be delivered.

“Our last order was placed 2 weeks ago so we are starting to get low on material, lower than I want to be,” he said.

Crews have been mixing the road salt with gravel to help stretch the sodium chloride and also provide better traction for motorists. The sub-zero temperatures have also

made the salt less effective.

“We mix it here and it provides more friction for the surface for drivers,” he said.

Ciesiel said he hopes Mother Nature soon gives everyone a reprieve.

“It does weigh on our crew. They talk about the dog days of summer, but these are the dog days of winter,” he said. “I’m proud of our crew and I have really been impressed how they keep going.”

n Aug. 21, 2020 I wrote an article about the involvement of my aunt and uncle in the making of the atomic bomb at Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

I received several comments from others how they too had family members taking part in that Manhattan Project.

Comments were sketchy and very little was said by those taking part.

It seemed to be something to be forgotten and yet it was an instrumental part of our history.

A number of weeks later my cousin sent me a picture of my aunt in the nursing home beside her bed that had a beautiful quilt on it. On the quilt was a book titled, “The Girls of Atomic City.”

I had no idea that such a book existed and I immediately had my daughter, Susan, order the book for me. It was most interesting and filled me in on many details.

I found the book difficult to even put down and I had many questions I would have liked to have asked my Aunt Ruth Ann but she was no longer living.

How many times do we have questions we would like to ask our parents about the history of the family? But many times it is too late.

While the snow and ice makes it treacherous for me to get out, I am going to give you numerous details of what it was like to be a part of that time in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

The book answered many questions for me and you may be interested in what I found out

as I read this book published in 2013 by Denise Kiernan.

The storyline followed 16 women and 12 men who played a part in their lives. The author called them the “principal cast of characters.”

The story started in August of 1943 with Celia who was a secretary in New York with the original office of the Manhattan Project.

When Celia found herself being transferred out of the New York office she asked of course “Where am I going?” and “What will I be doing?” The answer she received was, “She was not allowed to know any more than she had already been told.”

She was given just enough facts to be able to get on a train and head south. You right away had the feeling of secrecy that was involved in this project.

Celia had already worked long enough in her job in New York to know that one did not ask questions. When she arrived at the railway station she found herself with other young women all in the same situation.

But she said in 1943 you did not ask questions.

This New York Times bestseller, written in 2014, tells the true story of the top-secret World War II town of Oak Ridge, Tennessee, and the young women brought there unknowingly to help build the atomic bomb.

You simply did as you were told. Complaining was not the way of life in that era.

War also had changed everything in that time frame. Most of them had family members or knew of someone fighting many miles away.

Their home lives had already been filled with rationing, scrap metal drives, and doing without.

These young women had all been given the same message, “Their new jobs served one purpose only: to bring a speedy and victorious end to the war.”

With one little suitcase, they all headed to a new venture.

It was the first of several “castles” built in the Thousand Islands region during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The castle was built in 1888 for George M. Pullman.

BY OTTO DICK On April 28, 1896, Lowden married Florence Pullman, daughter of George M. Pullman. They had four children, one son and three daughters.

Lowden was elected Governor of Illinois by a majority of 149,824 votes on Nov. 6, 1916.

This announcement about their pending marriage appeared in March 22, 1896 The New York Times with a Chicago dateline.

The son of a farmer is to marry next month the daughter of a cabinetmaker and in the name of all that is sensible, why not?

There is likely to be considerable fuss about the match, for the cabinetmaker is immensely rich and the farmer no more so than farmers way out in Iowa are want to be.

Florence Pullman is twenty-six years old and a girl of far more than average sense. She is rich too.

How rich she will one day be in her own right is a tempting subject for conjecture, because the sum will run away into the millions, because the only people who know are holding their tongues about it.

People who do not know put it all the way from $2,000,000 to $10,000,000. Miss Pullman is a wage earner for her occupation. If it were set down in the directory, would be that of a namer of palace cars.

She is said to draw $10,000 a year, though the sum may be considerably smaller for giving names to the new cars built by the Pullman Company.

Miss Pullman has been in Europe a good deal with Mrs John A. Logan supervising her education. Naturally her personal character and millions have attracted fortune hunters.

During this same time period Pullman’s son George M. Pullman Jr. married Felicite Oglesby, daughter of Ex-Gov., Dick Oglesby of Illinois.

Frank O. Lowden is a square, energetic young fellow who takes a keen interest in local politics.

He was raised in Iowa on a farm and graduated from Iowa University. He is thirty-four years old and a member of many clubs.

The wedding will take place at the Pullman Mansion in this city. The details of the wedding trip are not yet settled.

It may include a brief run in Europe and later at the Pullman Summer Home at the Thousand

Islands located near New York City.

There are four children in the Pullman family, the twin boys, George and Sanger, the latter named for his mother who was a Sanger and a Chicago belle and daughters Harriet and Florence.

Now what is known about Frank Lowden and Florence Pullman it is safe to predict that they will belong to that interesting class of wealthy people who find their interests at home and consider their wealth as held in trust for humanity.

The article refers to the Pullman family’s Castle Rest, which was located in Alexandia Bay,

New York.

Castle Rest was the first of several “castles” built in the Thousand Islands region during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The “castle” was built in 1888 for George M. Pullman, and was a distinctive architectural work of Solon Spencer Beman.

It remained in the Pullman-Lowden family until the mid-twentieth century when the main structure was demolished.

Ancillary buildings designed by Beman remain on the island.

jhelfrich@shawmedia.com The Ogle County Health Department has been working with Rochelle Community Hospital and local organizations to put plans in place to assist those in the 65 and older group to get signed up for the COVID-19 vaccine.

If you have already registered, you are already on the list and are asked not to register again. The program is for people who do not have access to register online. Residents can now register by calling a number at multiple locations in the county.

In Oregon, residents can call the Rock River Center at 815-732-3252 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. during the week. They can also call the Oregon Public Library at 815-732-2724 or the University of Illinois Extension office at 815-732-2191.

Rochelle residents can call the Hub City Senior Center at 815-5625050, The Flagg-Rochelle Public Library at 815-562-3431 and the City of Rochelle at 815-562-6161.

In Mt. Morris, residents can call the Mt. Morris Senior Center at 816734-6335. In Polo, residents can call the Polo Senior Center at 815-2388645.

Hispanic residents should call the League of United Latin American Citizens at 815-570-3111.

If a resident registered weeks ago and still has not heard, the OCHD said if a resident registered, they will be called when doses allow.

The OCHD will leave a message for residents if they don’t answer if voicemails are set up and not full.

If there is a cancellation, the OCHD will call down a list to get someone to take an available dose so it won’t be wasted. That would be the only time a message isn’t left.

If other people who are younger and who registered later are receiv-

ing calls before those that are older, the OCHD said there are many groups within phase 1B and the logistics of getting everyone vaccinated are not just as simple as going down the list in the order in which it was received.

“There are many moving parts behind the scenes in getting this done including age, type of work people do for a living and scheduling onsite vaccine clinics at large employers in phase 1B,” the Facebook post said.

Residents may receive calls from Rochelle Community Hospital, KSB or the OCHD. The need to screen calls for spam is understood, but the OCHD can’t guarantee which number the call will come from.

As of its last report on Feb. 1, Ogle County had administered 4,319 total COVID-19 vaccines. 1,050 people have received their first and second dose already with 2.06 percent of the population fully vaccinated.

The OCHD announced Jan. 27 that it will no longer be posting daily COVID-19 case numbers and will now post them weekly.

The last post on Feb. 3 said there are 4,694 cases, 4,577 recoveries and 67 deaths.

A week prior to that, the county reported 4,648 cases, 4,118 recoveries and 67 deaths.

The Illinois Department of Public Health site said Tuesday that there are 1,556 cases in the zip code that includes Rochelle, Creston and White Rock.

Stillman Valley has 255 cases, Byron has 868 cases and Davis Junction has 297 cases.

Oregon and Mt. Morris have 609 and 250 cases, respectively.

Polo has 269 cases, Leaf River has 141 cases and Forreston has 192 cases.

High school students thankful to return to the court and field

jhelfrich@shawmedia.com When Madisyn Byerley was a freshman, she set the goal of participating in three sports every year of her high school career at Oregon High School.

When COVID-19 canceled her junior soccer season, she lost out on that goal. And until last month, she was going to lose out on two more sports during her senior year.

The IHSA put all winter, spring and previously postponed fall sports in motion to all take place before the end of this school year.

“I thought I wouldn’t have any,” Byerley said. “Not doing soccer last year took a toll on me mentally not fulfilling that. I was so relieved to find out I can this year.”

Byerley was one of the few area athletes who got to participate in low-risk sports during the fall. She ran cross country. She’s already started practice and games for basketball. She’s also spent nearly the past year trying to raise money for the self-funded girls soccer program, which she’ll get to see come to fruition later this spring.

After hearing the news that sports will return, Byerley said she was ecstatic. But the unprecedented schedule caught her off guard.

“I think I was overwhelmed,” Byerley said. “Holy cow, it’s actually happening. I get to play again and have this season. My senior year will feel more complete. But it’ll be a lot quicker.”

Forreston senior Braden Politsch will be playing basketball, football and baseball in the next four months.

After hearing the news, he was excited, but admitted it was weird to see the schedules pushed together and overlapping.

Politsch plans to approach the three-sport task like he does anything else. He believes it will be difficult. He’s spend the past 10 months working out at home and at school.

He’s tried to stay in shape and has thrown the football around with his teammates every chance he’s gotten.

“It means everything,” Politsch said of sports’ return. “I’ve been playing sports since I was six. To be able to do it one final time means a lot.”

Basketball is already in full swing for Politsch and the Cardinals. The

IHSA and health policies mandate playing with masks on, which he called challenging and something he never thought he’d do in “a million years.”

Politsch is partial to football, which is his favorite sport. Playing it in March will be foreign to the entire area. He’s been trying to wrap his head around it, especially not having usual preseason camps and practices in the summer and fall.

He believes the work put in conditioning and lifting will keep he and his teammates safe.

“I’m excited,” Politsch said. “But it’ll be challenging on a frozen field.

I’m most excited to just play sports with friends and teammates and having the opportunity to go out and have fun.”

Polo senior Harper Clark has had an even longer layoff than the rest of her teammates. She tore her ACL during basketball her junior year.

Clark will be playing basketball, volleyball and softball this winter and spring.

“I built my strength up to get back and I had nothing to come back to,” Clark said.

Clark said everyone was excited upon hearing the news of sports returning, but that many tried not to get their hopes up after so many false alarms over the months of COVID-19.

She believes the jammed-together

seasons will be tough, but seniors like her can’t wait for their last shots to play.

“I watched the grade before me miss out. Towards the end, everyone was accepting it. I was about to.”

Volleyball is what Clark is most excited for this year. It’s always been her favorite sport, but due to circumstances, it’s the sport she’s been able to play the least.

Clark believes the experience will “definitely be different” without the student section supporting teams.

Polo currently has no plans to allow spectators due to size and COVID-19 restrictions.

Byerley echoed Clark’s sentiments.

Oregon will have limited spectators at its home games.

“It’s kind of disappointing it has to come down to that, but at least we can play,” Byerley said. “My family is big on coming to all of my games.”

Outside of getting to play, Politsch sees some other positives in the new schedule. Baseball beginning later will make for nicer weather and he has experience playing in the early summer from his youth.

The impending experience for Ogle County athletes won’t be the high school experience they signed up for, but it will be what they’ve been waiting for during the past 10 months.

“It will be tough,” Politsch said.

“Mentally and physically. We’ll find time for rest at some point. It’ll be good. We’ve done it all our lives.”

The school didn’t have attendance or remote learning to allow for the vaccine clinic, which was put on by the Ogle County Health Department at the Blackhawk Center.

Fifth grade teacher Julie Ebens said getting the shot was easier than she expected.

“It was quick,” Ebens said. “I didn’t even know I was getting a shot. I want to protect myself, the public and my students. It went very smooth. The county and staff were excellent, efficient and professional.”

Staff members had to stick around for a short observation period following getting the shot. The vaccine becomes 95 percent effective after getting the second leg. It doesn’t mean no more masks or social distancing, but it’s a step in the right direction.

First grade teacher Erin Herr had been looking forward to Monday for a long time.

“I have friends in healthcare,” Herr said. “It’s important to me. It’s good giving teachers and staff the chance to research it. It’s not a day lost. They took my information and I had an allergy and they made sure I was good. I want things to go back to normal. I know it’s not 100 percent effective, but it would lessen symp-

OCHD Registered Nurse Tarah Ziegler was one of the people administering the vaccine. She said she’s worked with a handful of schools so far and they’ve all gone very smooth.

Most staff members have been very excited, she said.

“It’s always exciting,” Hernandez said. “Everyone is so happy. It’s just amazing. It really is. I don’t know, the more people that get it, the closer we’ll be to back to normal.”

OHS gets a grant for health career program

jhelfrich@shawmedia.com Starting this spring, Oregon High School students will get every chance to enter healthcare fields that have become crucial during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Rural Healthcare Explorers Program, a new collaboration between the University of Illinois College of Medicine Rockford and OHS was made possible by a $16,806 grant from the Community Foundation of Northern Illinois’ Dr. Louis and Violet Rubin Fund. The program is a six-week introduction to the field of healthcare and the preparation necessary to pursue a degree in the health sciences.

“We now realize how underappreciated our healthcare providers are,” OHS Dean of Students Shannon Cremeens said. “I think putting them back in the limelight as careers is important. We want to highlight that. This is a career you can really make a difference in. I don’t imagine after the pandemic things will slow down.”

Thirty students will be accepted into the program and will learn about such fields as medicine, pharmacy and nursing through handson activities, panel discussions with local healthcare professionals and a health topic exploration project.

The program will start accepting applications in February and the program will begin in April.

“We’ve had interest in the field,”

Oregon High School is located on Tenth Street.

Cremeens said. “In the past we had a student group for health careers. It’ll be a huge benefit for them to transition into an exploratory program.

We’ve already had kids see it and ask to sign up. They’re already excited.

They plan to pursue these careers.”

The collaboration came about when Oregon graduate Hana Hinkle, Ph.D and associate director of the college’s National Center for Rural Health Professions, reached out to the school.

rural Illinois, nationally and globally.

“These kinds of programs prepare students who may not know about certain health careers to enter those fields and, hopefully, consider practicing in their hometown or another rural area because they better understand the needs,” Hinkle said.

Cremeens expressed the desire to show Oregon students healthcare professions that they don’t see in their local community or even at smaller area hospitals.

“Geographically, we’re kind of in

the middle of nowhere,” Cremeens said. “It takes time to get to a regional hospital. They’re not seeing these things and things provided at a large scale facility. It’ll help them see there’s a lot more to healthcare.”

The grant money will be used specifically for educational materials and modules. The sessions will be led

by Vicky Rhyne, assistant director of external and pipeline projects with the UIC program.

Rhyne plans to work with Oregon’s science staff to compliment their curriculum. The course will be a blend of asynchronous online modules and students will meet once a week for activities and review.

“There will be career planning and preparation and info for each career,” Rhyne said. “We hope to have some healthcare providers attend in some way. They’ll talk about working in the region.”

Rhyne said similar programs aren’t as common and exposure opportunities usually aren’t seen until the undergraduate stage and internships.

Students will also do a health topic exploration project, which is similar to what undergrad students do.

“It’s a good challenge,” Rhyne said.

“It’s really great to help kids pursue these. The last year has shown the importance. It’s important to become more aware of opportunities. We want to show them the wide range of things they can pursue in the next 10 years so they can be ready.”

U.K. COVID-19 variant identified in Lee County

A Lee County resident has the first known case of the COVID-19 variant in Region 1.

The person, for whom no identifying traits were provided, has an unknown travel history, and the investigation is ongoing, the Lee County Health Department said in a news release.

The B.1.1.7 variant was first identified in the United Kingdom and already has been reported in other regions in Illinois including Chicago, Cook County and Lake County.

The identification of this variant in the region was expected, since it is known to spread more easily and already was identified in nearby regions, Cathy Ferguson-Al-

len, administrator of the Lee County Health Department, said in the release.

“This case is a reminder that the community must be vigilant in practicing prevention measures to protect themselves and each other from COVID-19,” Ferguson-Allen said.

“It also highlights the importance of following quarantine recommendations and to get tested if you’ve been in close contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID19.”

At least three coronavirus variants have appeared in the U.S. Even as COVID-19 case rates are declining, scientists worry the variants could drive a new surge.

The vaccines offer protection against the U.K., South African and Brazil variants, Dr. Anthony Fauci

noted during a recent White House briefing.

While the vaccines are somewhat less effective at preventing illness caused by the variants, they can protect against getting the kind of severe case that leads to hospitalization and death, Fauci said.

The more contagious U.K. variant is likely to be dominant in the U.S.

by March, some experts say, creating a race to vaccinate to prevent spread and head off new mutations.

The amount of cases of the new SARS-CoV-2 variant, called B.1.1.7, is doubling at a rate “of a little over a week and an increased transmission rate of 35-45%,” according to a study posted on Sunday.

As of Sunday, the CDC reported 690 cases in 33 states of this variation, which was first discovered in

the UK last fall and in the U.S. by December.

Illinois had 17 cases of B.1.1.7 as of Sunday and none of the other two variants, the CDC said.

The CDC feels B.1.1.7 may become the dominant strain in the U.S. by March.

By contrast, two other variants B.1.351 (South Africa variant) and P.1 (Brazil variant), only had six cases in three states and three cases in two states, respectively.

Vaccine supplies continues to be limited.

While those in phase 1b, which includes frontline essential workers and those 65 and older, are eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine, there is not enough vaccine available to vaccinate everyone who is eligible.

Oregon’s Joey Gelander scored early to bring the Hawks to within 3-2, then Stillman Valley went on a 32-0 run to seize a 35-2 lead 2 minutes into the second quarter. Senior guards Chad Gerig and Micah Johnson each had eight points in the onslaught.

“We just struggled to do the little things,” first-year Oregon coach Nathan Green said. “We talk about talking all the time on defense, and [Stillman Valley] does a great job setting screens. They got loose on a couple of quick ones early and were beating us down the floor.

Our body language just wasn’t very good. We’ve just got to start talking.

That’s what we’re trying to sell them on right now.”

The Hawks (0-2) closed the second quarter with a 7-2 run to close to within 37-9 at halftime, only to have the Cardinals take flight again. The final score was Stillman Valley’s largest margin of the game.

Oregon second at Plum Hollow: The Oregon girls bowling team was the runner-up in their seven-team Hawk Invitational at Plum Hollow on Feb. 6.

Sycamore won with a 5,662, beating the Hawks by 336 pins.

Sycamore’s Madelyn Lathrop was the individual winner with a 1,318 series, beating teammate Brandi Stover by five pins.

Sammantha Meyers led the Hawks with a fourth-place finish, rolling a 1,157.

Teammate Alysa Conley took sixth with a 1,139. Ava Wight and Rebbeca Meyers also broke the 1,000 pin mark with a 1,047 and 1,018, and Hannah Kaltenbrun was not far off, finishing with a 965.

Feb. 5 At 12:43 p.m. deputies, the Forreston Fire Department, Forreston Ambulance, Polo Fire Department and the Polo Ambulance responded to a four-car accident with unknown injuries on Illinois 26 at Haldane Road.

A white Ford Econoline van was northbound on Illinois 26 when it lost control on the snow covered roadway.

The van crossed over the roadway striking a white Chevrolet Malibu head on that was southbound on Illinois 26.

Feb. 6 At 3:35 p.m. deputies responded to Interstate 39 at mile marker 107 south-

bound for a two-vehicle crash. After a short investigation it was determined that a 2014 Chrysler driven by Jazmin Gray, 24, of Jackson, Tennessee was traveling south on Interstate 39 and lost control on the snow covered road. Gray then collided with a 2004 Dodge truck driven by Randall Evans, 53, of Onalaska, Wisconsin. Tyija Walters, 32, of Joliet, a passenger of Gray’s, was transported to Rochelle Hospital for minor injuries. Gray was issued a citation for driving too fast for conditions. Deputies were assisted on scene by LSR Fire and the Illinois State Police.

Shaun Woodard, 53, of Byron was arrested at 1:16 a.m. for driving while under the influence of alcohol after deputies conducted a traffic stop in the 100 block of North Walnut Street for a traffic violation. Shaun was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

OBITUARY DARRELL DIEHL OREGON – Darrell Diehl, 85, of Oregon, passed away on January 31, 2021.

He was born in Dixon to Beulah (Huffman) and Esper Diehl. Growing up on a livestock and grain farm, Darrell learned the values of hard work, responsibility, helping others, and taking care of family.

Darrell attended Mt. Morris High School, was a US Marine veteran, and a member of the Mt. Morris Moose Lodge.

He made lasting friendships working in the dairy industry, construction, and retiring as an operating engineer.

Jan. 31 At 3 p.m., police took a report of a hit and run that had occurred in the Butitta Brothers parking lot, located at 1007 Pines Road, where at some point between 4 p.m. on Jan. 30 and 3 p.m. on Jan. 31, an unknown vehicle struck a parked 2002 Honda belonging to Thomas B. Knipple, 29, of Polo, causing it to be pushed into a parked 1996 GMC belonging to Ethan J. Sward, 31, of Dixon.

He is survived by his son, Rick “DJ” (Kim) Weller; daughters, Kathy (Jeff) Adams and Trina Dailey; two sisters, Maxine Strohecker and Rogene Koch; brother, Roger Diehl; eight grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Darrell’s service was Feb. 3 at Chapel Hill Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, Dixon, with Rev. Megan Smick, of Oregon United Methodist Church, officiating.
