4. Newton High School Cardinal boys basketball team took on the Knoxville Panthers resulting in a big win of 71-60. The win against the former conference rivals opened the second part of the 20152016 basketball season.

Newton City Council moved forward with the Community Development Block Grant. Funds were put toward the revitalization of homes and will be paid for through the bonded housing initiative fund.

8. Newton Cardinal wrestlers won senior night, 57-13, with seniors posting seven wins, helping Newton power past Oskaloosa in Little Hawkeye conference action.

14. An anonymous donor created the Challenge Grant for the Jasper County Historical Society to help encourage former and fellow Jasper County citizens to support the museum and its role in documenting and preserving local history.

20. More than 20 people came out for the

grade category of the fourth annual Knights of Columbus Spelling Bee. Second place went to Emma Noel. In the fifth grade spelling bee, Newton contest winner was Owen Muhs and second place finisher was Alex Winton.

2. Many Jasper County residents participated in the Iowa Caucus for the 2016 Presidential race. Ted Cruz and Hillary Clinton were the big winners in Jasper County. Cruz carried Jasper County with about 35 percent of the Republican vote. Clinton took slightly more than 51 percent of the vote in the county, about six percentage points more than Bernie Sanders.

5. Eight men were honored by Newton High School on Legacy Night at the NHS basketball games against Pella.

The awards went to Dick Foote, Dick Stiles, Stan Kirchoff, Jack Chadwick and Don Perkins. Newton also honored coaches Tim Trier, Mike Castings and Darren Hurt.

15. Isaak Webb, of the Newton High School boys swim team, won the 100-yard breaststroke state swimming championship. This was the first time since 1938 Newton has won an event at the state swim competition.

17. Newton High Cardinal girls captured their second straight Class 2A district championship.

The Newton girls posted a leading 1,638 pin total through the two individual games then rolled up Baker Games scores of 194, 108, 159, 200 and 172 for the title.

19. The Maytag Blue Cheese recall was expanded after Iowa Department of Agriculture testing revealed possible Listeria contamination.

This recall effectively shut down operations at the plant until more updates could be made.

2. Dennis Farland, of Newton, was selected for the 2016 induction class of the Iowa Rock ‘n’ Roll Music Association Hall of Fame in Arnolds Park. Farland received a lifetime achievement honor for Iowa’s Central Region.

4. Senior Madison Humphrey was selected to the girls’ Class 2A All-State second team in bowling. Humphrey was named to the girls’ Class 2A West District first team and Newton senior Mariah Gonzales earned honorable mention district honors. The Iowa Utilities Board approved a construction permit for the Dakota Access crude oil pipeline with a unanimous 3-0 vote, one of the $3.7 billion, 1,168mile project’s last major regulatory hurdles in the state. Plans included laying 343.43 miles of underground pipe in Iowa, with 33.73 miles in rural areas of Jasper County from Mingo through rural Reasnor.

18. The Jasper County Health Department converted office space into needed work space to conduct clinics and department business.

22. The City of Newton approved the purchase of the 4.25 acres located at the former Newton Country Club for $106,000. The area is designated for a townhome development.

1. Newton Main Street hosted Main Street Iowa’s Spring Workshop.

The two-day program brought about 85 people to the community.

The featured topics of the workshop are fundraising and investment drives — a timely topic for Newton Main Street, whose initial three-year pledge drive concludes at the end of 2016.

4. Kristine K. Weitzell was appointed by the Iowa Board of Corrections to run the Newton medium- and minimum-security sites. The move came about one month after the retirement of the top two Newton prison officials, warden Terry Mapes and deputy warden Jill Dursky.

Nelson made the move across the square to gain much needed space for her ever expanding business. Relics originally opened in February 2015 following the closure of Pappy’s in December 2013.

Inspiration for winning comes from fallen teammate

By Jocelyn Sheets Newton Daily News Wednesday, June 8, 2016 became one of the worst days in the young lives of Newton High’s football players when s enior-to-b e Trenton Brady was killed in an automobile accident. Brady would have been a starting lineman for the Cardinals in Brady the 2016 football season.

The loss of their friend and teammates coupled with the fact Newton had been pushed back into Class 4A football contention could have given the Cardinal players and coaches an excuse for a poor season. Instead, Brady inspired his teammates to work harder, play harder and compete better in the fall.

“For us, honoring Trenton means we have to work harder for him. We’re going to have one last season — his season — to remember,” Newton senior lineman Alex Miller said.

Newton was the smallest school in the Iowa High School Athletic Association’s Class 4A division. It was in a district with the largest 4A team in the state — West Des Monies Valley.

“We had a really tough time in (Class) 3A last year and a lot of people gave up on us,” senior lineman Caden Manning said.

“Then it was announced we were moved up to Class 4A and more people were giving up on us.”

Not Manning, who used Twitter to sum up his outlook on the 2016 season in Class 4A. “New Opportunities,” was his tweet.

“I believe in this team. We have a lot of new guys. We’re going to face teams I’ve never played against, so it’s new opportunities,” Manning said.

Manning, who was one of the closest friends to Brady, and the Cardinals took on the challenge of 4A competition and playing a special season for their late teammate. Manning, Miller, seniors Brady Smith and Josh Gulling were captains for the season opener at home.

They walked out to the middle of the field carrying the No. 52 jersey of their late teammate Brady.

Then the Cardinals went to work on the field. They posted a 6-3 mark for the 2016 season, winning their first five games. Before each game — home and away — Newton’s senior captains walked to the coin flip carrying Brady’s No. 52 jersey. The jersey was on the Cardinal sideline win or lose.

Following a 42-6 win over Ottumwa to open the season, senior running back Jordan Norvell, who scored two touchdowns in the game, admitted he was worried about playing at the 4A level this season.

“But I got past that, and we as a team, set our minds to working hard to be the best we can be this season,” Norvell said. “I was playing for Trenton Brady.

We all are.”

The Cardinals rolled past Waterloo East, 63-0, in Week 2, took on an undefeated Des Moines North on the road to win 28-7 in Week 3 and made the long trek to Burlington for a 35-21 victory.

Newton, which hadn’t played Class 4A football since 2008, opened District 4 play on the road at Fort Dodge.

The 43-21 defeat was start of a three-game losing skid for the Cardinals — 34-0 to Southeast

The losses hurt. Newton’s players were emotional after each of those games. They also resolved to work hard to be better in their next game.

The Cardinals knew they were not advancing into the 4A playoffs. They had one more game to play. It was at home and it was Senior Night.

“Our senior kids have been through a lot with losing a teammate. It inspired them. I told the our kids to carry Trenton’s spirit with them always.

He will be with us all season,” Newton head coach Ed Ergenbright said. “These young men

honored Trenton by playing and behaving as Trenton lived his life as a great teammate, working hard and being accountable.”

Newton’s first season in Class 4A competition since 2008 the right way — the Cardinal way.

With 15 seniors leading the way, the Cardinals dominated the visiting Indianola Indians in a 45-28 victory.

Manning pointed to the sky after the score, and every score afterward for the Cardinals.

“I would always touch the little logo TB (Trenton Brady) on the back of my helmet this season because every single touchdown we score is for him.

Tonight, I just wanted him to know so I pointed to the sky,” Manning said.

The Cardinals finished third in the district at 2-3. Newton’s players were recognized by Class 4A District 4 coaches for their efforts, earning four firstteam and four second-team spots among the All-District 4 selections. The Cardinals had eight players receive honorable mention honors from district

coaches.

Cardinal seniors Brady Smith, Caden Manning, Reese Rosenquist and Caleb Kite were named All-District 4 FirstTeam. Seniors Jordan Norvell and Alex Miller and juniors Garrett Sturtz and Trevor Ergenbright were named to the All-District 4 Second Team.

Receiving honorable mention honors for Newton were seniors Lucas Montgomery and Josh Gulling, juniors Joe Busch, Grayson Graham, Blayden Rhone, Jaron Roush and Zach Combs and sophomore Jaise Gulling.

“When we came out in the third quarter, my mindset was this was my last game and I was going to fight my best for these guys,” senior offensive lineman Lucas Montgomery said. “This season has been very emotional after losing Trenton before the season. We stepped up and became one — played together, cried together and worked together. We didn’t go 9-0 as everyone would love to do but 6-3 — it was an amazing season for us.”

Maytag Corporate Campus donated to DMACC

By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News When Reza Kargarzadeh started plastic molding business in 1994 with three presses, he didn’t know he’d one day own a company with about 2,000 employees, a facility in Mexico and 15 total locations.

He also didn’t know he’d not only end up obtaining, in 2012, and one day donating the corporate campus of one of Iowa’s most storied companies to a community college to help forge business-education partnerships.

Kargarzadeh was joined by Gov. Terry Branstad, DMACC officials and state and local leaders for a news confer-

ence held Oct. 31 in the Maytag Innovation Center — a signature building in the campus. He announced he’s donating seven former Maytag corporate campus buildings to DMACC, valued at about $9 million and encompassing about 472,000 feet of office, industrial and residential space, to be used for expansion of DMACC programs and to help strengthen the college’s partnerships with industries.

“In the past six years, my company (Engineered Plastic Components) has gone through tremendous growth,” Kargarzadeh said. “When I looked around and what we wanted to do with this

facility, I started talking with DMACC President Rob Denson. I found his ideas very dynamic, very creative. We have a great education system in the state of Iowa and we want to help grow that. We have decided to donate this beautiful facility to DMACC.” Denson, who also spoke at the news conference, said the donation is the largest in the 50-year history of the college.

other educational partners, student housing, space for new DMACC programs and a business incubator for startup companies offering move-in ready space.

Kargarzadeh bought the property in 2012 for only $1, but absorbed about $2 million each year in “carrying costs,” in addition to paying about 50 percent of annual taxes on the property, due to a rebate agreement with the city.

The campus has had a few tenants since the Whirlpool corporation left Newton about nine years ago. While the city won’t have that direct tax revenue in the years ahead, the two businesses that are currently in campus buildings —

Aureon and Health Enterprises — will remain and will be assessed and taxed, as will all businesses that move into the campus later.

The seven buildings include the former Maytag Building 18 — the tallest, most visible office building in the campus, located directly against West Fourth Street North. It also includes Building 20, which has the circle drive off of West Fourth Street North, Buildings 16 and 17, office buildings that are behind Building 18; Buildings 1 and 2, where the Innovation Center and other first-floor facilities are located, and Building 50, which is strictly for mechanical equipment.

While the donation solves the issue of having an iconic, prominent structure in central Newton no longer as simply a reminder of what Maytag was and how things ended, it will also fit well into the nine principles of the city’s comprehensive plan that involve K-12 or higher education.

Also this fall, a small class of Iowa State University landscape design students presented their individual ideas for how to develop the green spaces on and around the DMACC/Maytag campus. These ideas will eventually be placed into a final book of ideas for those green spaces to be submitted to DMACC and the City of Newton.

Dakota Access completes Iowa construction in 2016

By Mike Mendenhall Newton Daily News Within the span of eight months in 2016, the Dakota Access Pipeline’s Iowa segment went from Iowa Utilities Board approval to constructed and in the ground.

But protests outside of Iowa by indigenous Americans at the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe reservation in North Dakota has garnered the project national attention in the fourth quarter of this year, which has put the final section of the $3.4 Billion four-state pipeline on hold.

The IUB recessed its public deliberations Feb. 19 to review the information presented over a week of public hearings.

On March 10, the board issued its final order and decision giving Dakota Access, LLC and its parent company, Texas-based Energy Transfer Partners, the go-head to begin construction in Iowa after the permit was officially issued in early April.

Within days of receiving a construction permit, pipeline crews were staking and marking right-of-ways in Jasper County and throughout Iowa. Soon 30-inch pipe began shipping out of a stockpile off Highway 6, just three-miles east of Newton which had been growing since April 2015. This was despite still-needed permits from

the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and the Iowa Army Corps of Engineers to bore underneath three major Iowa waterways and a nature area in Northwest Iowa.

The IDNR and Iowa Army Corps eventually issued the final permits in the state.

Non-violent protests continued sporadically in Iowa in 2016, primarily centered near Boone in Story County, throughout the summer and early fall.

Several protesters were arrested for trespassing but the project continued.

Only one small protest occurred in Jasper County near Mingo. But Dakota Access-contracted companies saw two instances of reported crim-

inal activity against their equipment and property in Jasper County.

Fires damaging three bulldozers and one excavator in October near Reasnor cost the pipeline company and its subcontractor approximately $2 million. This was combined with August equipment fires in Jasper and Mahaska Counties which total approximately $3 million.

The Jasper County Sheriff ’s Office has deemed these events apparent arson, but as of Dec. 14, no suspects have been named in either case and no arrests have been made.

The second round of fires prompted Dakota Access to offer an

$100,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction, but the pipeline company has not released a statement on the alleged arson since Nov. 1.

Despite the all

the controversy, a report filed on Nov. 23 by the company with the IUB announced primary construction of the 343-mile Iowa stretch of the Bakken pipeline was complete, in the ground and covered.

When and if oil ever flows through the nearly complete pipeline is largely dependent on how Dakota Access and ETP responds to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers ruling to deny construction permits on the Missouri River reservoir in North Dakota, and if an incoming Trump administration can or will order regulators to reverse course and grant Dakota Access permission to proceed with the current route under the reservoir.

But the IUB’s decision to allow the use eminent domain to acquire private land for the project was challenged in December. A lawsuit brought by 13 Iowa landowners and the Sierra

Club claims Iowa Code was misinterpreted by the IUB and argues the three-member panel did not have the right to allow a non-public utility to use eminent domain to gain easements for the project.

The IUB stated in its final decision and order on March 10 the pipeline “will promote the public convenience and necessity as required by Iowa Code § 479B.9.”

Groups both for and against the proposed pipeline expect appeals to be filed in the case regardless of District Court Judge Jeffery Farrell’s ruling.

A representative from Dakota Access released a statement Dec. 12 which said the company expects a decision from any appeal to take up to one year.

Beck’s Hybrids completes first growing season at new Colfax facility $15 million project brought big investment to Jasper County in 2016

By Mike Mendenhall Newton Daily News COLFAX — Beck’s Hybrids completed construction and held its grand opening celebration of its new $15 million agricultural seed distribution and testing facility in 2016, with a promise to bring at least 50 new jobs and much needed tax revenue to the western Jasper County community.

During construction of the 90,000-square foot complex and at its inaugural field day in August, the Beck’s Hybrids facility north of Interstate 80 had two visits from Gov. Terry Branstad in 2016 and a lot for attention from the Iowa ag industry.

The 2016 growing season saw the first display of Beck’s 190-acre corn, soy bean and cover crop test plot. The 1,300-plus visitors at Beck’s inaugural field day on Aug. 10 took tram tours of the test plots, which feature varying soil types.

Attendees included Branstad, Jasper County Economic Development Corporation Executive Director Chaz Allen and Colfax Mayor David Mast.

The Beck’s Hybrid project was first an-

nounced by Allen in May 2015. Jasper County and the City of Colfax gave the company a five-year, sliding scale tax abatement in exchange for locating in the town of 2,093. The county, state regulators and Colfax approved a tax abatement package for Beck’s in 2015 with a 75 percent abatement the first year, 60 percent in year two, 45 percent the third year, 30 percent the fourth year and 15 percent the fifth year.

Construction also began late last year, but the project moved quickly through the first three quarters of 2016. The Jasper County Board of Supervisors approved a $20,000 forgivable loan to Beck’s and a second 0 percent interest, fiveyear $20,000 loan to be used for initial development.

Beck’s is the largest family-owned retail seed company in the U.S. The Indiana-based company has market share in eight states and distribution outlets in six states. The Colfax City Council and Beck’s came to an agreement in July to officially annex the 80-acre farm field north of Interstate 80 and west of the Colfax Microtel Inn & Suites into the city limits as-

suring the majority of the property tax revenue would go to Colfax.

The city council unanimously rezoned a portion of the property from agricultural to business/ commercial in a 4-0 vote shortly before Beck’s field day. The Indiana company also leased a portion of the city-own Quarry Springs Park property this year for a portion of its test plot fields. This has given a steady revenue source to the nonprofit group developing the park.

The Beck’s distribution center/warehouse/ offices is separated into three buildings. During an on-site tour in April, Beck’s construction project superintendent Dennis Combs told the Newton Daily News the front 6,500 feet of the west building is a maintenance shop for everything from pickup trucks to tractors and combines.

The rear 235 feet is warehouse and storage.

In the middle building, the front 110 feet is a two-story office space and mechanical room.

The back 200 feet is warehouse. The third, east building will utilize the front 70 feet as a loading dock, truck driver waiting area and restroom facilities and the remaining 230 feet will serve as more warehouse space.

Scott Nelson is a practical farm research agronomist for Beck’s and is based at the Colfax site. He leads the facility’s practical farm research team which provides a service to Iowa farmers looking for a better understanding of land tillage effects, soil fertility, nitrate and basic crop management.

“At Beck’s we do that research for farmers.

Iowa is the newest location where we have practical farm research. We have 130 acres here — 60 acres of really high productive ground and 75 acres of less productive (graded on corn suitability rating). So we’re testing on both kinds of soil in both environments,”

Nelson said Beck’s will operate statewide initiatives from its Colfax location. The company’s Practical Farm Research Partners program will look to establish relationships with producers in all regions of the state.

Voters approve Berg Middle School rebuild Campaign leads to voters passing $26.9M bond

By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News The Newton Community School District will construct its first new school building in more than 50 years after voters approved a $26.9 million general obligation bond in September.

Nearly 2,900 voters cast ballots in a Sept. 13 election for a bond that’s part of the district’s overall $33.6 million total project cost to rebuild Berg Middle School, which has several design and remodeling issues.

State law requires 60 percent approval for capital projects that involve new bond debt, and this bond passed with nearly 66 percent approval.

About 450 votes were cast absentee — thanks in part to a vigorous emphasis from the “Preserve the Pride” bond committee. However, more than 2,400 people voted in person on Sept. 13.

The district hopes to begin construction on the new Berg

building this summer and open it in the fall of 2019.

Shortly after Superintendent Bob Callaghan began presenting FRK Architects and Engineers’ designs 2014 estimates of a $17.6 minimum cost to remodel Berg, and maintaining that the general guideline is when remodeling costs are more than 50 percent of the cost to build new, the rebuild is what should be pursued, he became the face of the bond effort. However, once a bond committee was formed and a public-relations firm was hired, the bond effort was no longer focused on any one individual.

FRK was recently named to collaborate with a committee of educators and other local residents for the design phase of the project.

A site plan, construction documents and bidding will take place this spring, with construction set to begin in the summer.

A failure of the bond would have meant the district would have needed to find ways to remod-

el the facility, possibly with a less-expensive bond.

The election was not entirely a unifying event, as there were 980 “no” votes cast and some publicly stated opposition to the bond, which involves a property tax increase. The district will be paying off its other bond debt obligations soon, but it raised its overall levy in 2016 at about the same time the City of Newton and Jasper County raised its levies.

The new Berg facility will be the first all-new school building in the Newton Community School District since the original Berg building was completed in the early 1960s. Older structures in the district, including the recently acquired former Hy-Vee West grocery that is now the EJH Beard Administrative Center and WEST Academy, have been modified extensively.

While a 50-year-old school might sound young by Iowa standards, many innovations in construction and school de-

sign would give the NCSD the chance to create a much more modern facility that could effective use modern Internet and other classroom technology.

The committee hosted several forums over the winter where FRK, based in Des Moines, gathered input from teachers, parents and various community leaders and other residents about components to include in a redesign of the school. However, some of the design steps for the grades 5-8 school must wait until the district finds out exactly how much money is available for the project.

The $26.9 million bond, which the district must levy to pay off within 20 years, will be coupled with about $6.7 million in the district’s available SAVE funds.

The newest middle school gym will be the major reused piece, so the new construction will begin at that gym at move northeast, into what is currently parking and athletic-field space.

Later designing will determine if the softball field and running track will need to be moved from their current spots, but both will be part of the new design.

There were many elements discussed in last year’s prebond-election FRK planning forums, ranging from geothermal heating to width of hallways to locker placement to grade-level groupings. Sightlines, noise levels and total square footage were a few of hundreds of items discussed.

Some concessions might need to be made in order to incorporate new elements or proximities and spacing, to keep the project within its $33.6 million budget and to keep the design simple and modifiable in the future. For example, a space can easily be left for a multi-million-dollar performing arts space to be added at a later date, so the performance space and stage area in the initial rebuild might be more basic and modest than some seek.

25. Newton City Administrator Bob Knabel announced his plans to retire on Oct. 3. He has served as city administrator since March 2012 and worked with two mayors and three different city councils during his 4.5 years in the position.

29. Newton Cardinals cruised to a 42-6 win over visiting Ottumwa to start the 2015 season.

Prior to the varsity game Friday night, Newton honored three “Cardinals” who died since late April — former teacher and coach Tim Trier, former player and 2010 NHS graduate Ryan Klingensmith and Trenton Brady, who would have been a senior on the 2016 team.

7. The Newton City Council unanimously approved the $549,000 purchase of the Midtown Building and three other properties. A discussion about plans, timelines and deadlines for the former Hotel Maytag renovation project was held by council and city staff before final approval was given.

9. The 12th annual Thanks With Franks event, hosted by the Young Professionals of Jasper County, brought in approximately 2,000 people with 10,000 hot dogs given away. The winner of the “Top Dog” award — as voted by the sampling public — was from Park Centre Retirement Community.
