Auction will raise money for church

By ERIC SCHELKOPF BATAVIA – From singing lessons to a Florida beach condominium rental, a variety of items will be auctioned off today at the Congregational Church of Batavia’s Good and Services Auction.

The auction will be from 6 to 10 p.m. at the church, 21 S. Batavia Ave. (Route 31), Batavia.

Doors open at 5 p.m.

Those who attend the auction will have the chance to bid on a number of items, including the rental of a condominium located on Lido Key Beach in Sarasota, Fla., one of the larger items in the auction.

A number of services also will be part of the auction, including adult voice lessons, piano lessons and yard and handyman services.

“It’s a lot of fun for people to watch,” church member Francine Popeck said. “You get bidding wars between tables.”

Rover Rescue

Organization continuing its mission to find homes for dogs

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com Dorothy, a beagle mix, placed her giant paws on Cindy Porcaro’s shoulders as the Batavia resident gave her a loving scratch under her chin.

Dorothy has come a long way since arriving at Porcaro’s home in late August.

“It took a while for her to warm up to me,” Porcaro said.

“She was taken from a hoarding situation with 25 other dogs.”

For the past year, Porcaro and her husband, Greg, have been fostering dogs for Rover Rescue, which is marking its 10th anniversary this year.

The group was co-founded in 2003 by North Aurora resident Teri Grandt.

Over the years, the nonprofit Rover Rescue has saved about 5,800 dogs from shelters where animals can be euthanized. Many of the dogs are saved from high-kill shelters in southern Indiana, Grandt said.

“Just because a dog was born in Indiana doesn’t mean it should die,” Grandt said.

According to the American Humane Association, each year approximately 8 million stray and unwanted animals are taken in by shelters across the country, and about 3.7 million – nearly half – of these animals must be euthanized because good homes cannot be found for them.

Grandt, Rover Rescue’s foster home coordinator, has been fostering dogs for 26 years.

Before starting Rover Rescue, she had been a part of the St. Charles-based Homes for Endangered and Lost Pets.

Rover Rescue had 11 members when it started in 2003.

It has grown to about 45 foster families.

But it always is looking for more people willing to foster in order to keep up with the high demand.

“There will never be enough foster homes,” Grandt said.

Rover Rescue pays for the veterinary care, food and supplies needed by the foster families.

At any given time, Rover Rescue has between 65 and 85 dogs available for adoption.

Currently, Rover Rescue has more than 60 dogs available for adoption, and their photos and videos are posted at Rover Rescue’s website, www.roverrescue.org.

“They can get more of a connection with the dog when it’s a video,” she said.

Several dogs up for adoption will be shown from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today at the Healthy Pet store, 2620 N. Farnsworth Ave., Aurora, and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at Oswego Go Dog Go, 100 Main St., Oswego.

They also will be shown Nov. 9 and 10 at the Chicago Pet Show at the Kane County Fairgrounds, 525 S. Randall Road, St. Charles.

year now. The couple has two boys, ages 7 and 11.

“Our boys had been wanting a dog,” she said. “We had a dog when they were younger that we had to put down because of a stroke.”

The experience has turned out to be a success. The family found homes for nine other dogs fostered, and Dorothy is set to be adopted this weekend.

“All of them have had different personalities,” Porcaro said. “It’s been fun.”

Porcaro keeps in contact with the families that have ad-

opted the dogs that have been fostered and gets updates on how the dogs are doing.

“I encourage them to send emails,” Porcaro said. “A couple of the dogs have graduated from puppy school. It is nice to see they are happy.”

While she is fostering them, she tries to train them as best as she can. And she is happy with the progress that Dorothy has made in the past few weeks as she gets ready to be adopted.

“She was afraid of me,” Porcaro said. “She was a flight risk when we first got her.”

Former mayor will seek seat in 50th District

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com YORKVILLE – Former Yorkville mayor Valerie Burd announced that she is joining the race to fill the vacancy soon to be left by a retiring Kay Hatcher in the Illinois House.

Burd, 66, served as an alderman for Yorkville and as mayor from 2007 to 2011. She said while she’s a registered Republican, she joins the race for the 50th District as a Democrat.

“I’m a big supporter of Kay Hatcher, and I’ve known her for a long time,” she said. “The Republican party seems to be leaning way conservative. I’m conservative on some issues, but I’m not conservative on social issues. ... I just feel like I’m compatible with the Democrats Valerie Burd right now.”

Hatcher, R-Yorkville, announced she would not seek re-election.

Burd holds degrees in journalism and political science from Northern Illinois University. She’s president of Positive Media Solutions, a corporation that creates community guides, maps and other materials for chambers of commerce and businesses. Burd has five grown children and lives with her husband, Paul, in Yorkville.

She said pension reform and job creation are key issues she’ll focus on in the campaign.

She said she hopes to work with lawmakers on both sides of the aisle.

“I need to go in there and support the [person] who’s got the solution that’s going to be the best for the people in my district,” she said. “Whether it’s a Republican or Democrat, we’ve got to work on these issues.”

Four GOP hopefuls have declared their candidacy for the 50th District race – Beth Goncher of Aurora, Julie Cosimo of Oswego, Keith Wheeler of Oswego and Bill Keck of Sugar Grove.

Students walk, run to raise money

CHARLES – St. Patrick Catholic School third-grade student Dempsey Howicz felt a bit winded Friday afternoon after running 10 laps around the school’s former campus in downtown St. Charles to raise money for the Misericordia Heart of Mercy Home in Chicago.

“She’ll probably go to bed early tonight,” said her mother, Tisha Howicz of South Elgin, who was there to cheer her daughter and the other students participating in the walk-a-thon event.

Dempsey was one of 58 third-graders who participated in the event to raise money for Misericordia, which is a residential community for children and adults with mild

to profound developmental disabilities.

Over the years, the students have participated in walk-a-thons to raise money for various charities.

Other parents were cheering on their children, such as Katie Thomas, who watched her 9-year-old son, Bryce, run for an hour around the building.

“He’s in better shape than I am,” she said.

Bryce did 31 laps, breaking the previous record of 24 laps.

He credited his win to running with his dad, Ron, over the summer.

“I ran every day during the summer,” Bryce said.

OWASSO, Okla. – Alice Todd was born Sept. 2, 1932, in Chicago, to Peter and Josephine Poplauskis Yoksas. She died Monday, Oct. 14, 2013, in Owasso, Okla., at the age of 81 years.

Alice was reared and educated in Chesterton, Ill., and was a graduate of Chesterton High School.

She was married April 20, 1952, in Chesterton, to Harvey Todd. She had spent most of her working life in the banking industry as a banking officer.

She and Harvey moved to Owasso in 1996. Alice enjoyed a variety of pastimes including knitting, crocheting and painting, as well as working large 3-D puzzles.

Loving family members include three daughters, Jody Harness of Elburn, Cathy Kramer of Owasso, Okla., and Lori Westerlin and her husband, Rick, of Elburn; five grandsons, Chad Harness and his wife, Heather, of Aurora, Jess Kramer and his wife, Andrea, of Owasso, Okla., Grant Kramer and his wife, Elizabeth, of Owasso, Okla., Mathew Westerlin and his wife, Crystal, of Elburn, and Mitchell Westerlin of Elburn; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Laura Johnson of Dover, Del., and Terry Roberge and her husband, Roger, of Solana Beach, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Harvey Todd, on July 22, 2006.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Friday at the Mowery Funeral Service Chapel in Owasso, with Chaplain Nancy Brown officiating. The family requests memorial contributions be made to A-Vow Hospice, 2400 North Hemlock Circle, Broken Arrow, OK 74012. Batavia man escapes after car rolls into pond

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com BLACKBERRY TOWN SHIP – Batavia resident Gary Thielk was able to safely escape his vehicle Friday afternoon after it became almost completely submerged in a pond at a forest preserve in Blackberry Township.

Thielk, 72, said he had planned to take a five- to 10-minute fishing break Friday afternoon at Grunwald Farms Forest Preserve.

He said sometime around 2:30 p.m., he used a boat ramp to back his 2006 Ford Ranger truck close to the pond, but he said he decided to pull it forward because it was a little too close to the water. While moving his truck, Thielk said his leg got stuck and his truck rolled backward into the pond.

“I don’t know how my leg got stuck,” he said. “I didn’t want to become a fatality.”

Thielk said his car was almost completely submerged in water, but he was able to

escape by working his leg loose and opening the driver’s side door. He said he swam to shore and walked to a nearby building to call for help.

His car was about 40 feet offshore, and divers helped recover some of his belongings, some of which had floated to the surface of the pond. The Elburn & Countryside Fire Protection District responded to the scene, along with the Kane County Forest Preserve.

Ill. Supreme Court strikes down Internet sales tax law

editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – Trick-or-treating hours are set for 3 to 7 p.m. Oct. 31 in Geneva, and youths will have other opportunities to participate in the holiday tradition in the city.

From 2 to 5 p.m. Oct. 31, downtown businesses will offer free treats to children. And there will be a trick-or-treating opportunity from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Oct. 27 at the Geneva Commons, which is off Randall Road, south of Route 38.

In a news release, the Geneva Police Department offers safety tips for those who will be taking part: • Wear light-colored clothing or some type of reflective material for better visibility.

• Ensure costumes fit and are worn in a manner that prevents tripping.

• If children wear masks, make sure they can see clearly and their visibility is not obstructed.

• Small children should always be accompanied by an adult.

• Go out in the daylight when possible and carry a flashlight for use if out after dark.

• Only give and accept wrapped candy.

• Examine all candy before allowing children to eat it.

• Carrying hard props such as swords and daggers should be substituted with soft foam rubber items.

• Stay within familiar neighborhoods.

• Watch for traffic.

State Sen. Karen McConnaughay, R-St. Charles, said she would support new legislation that might seek to address the court’s concerns, should any arise.

“The businesses that choose to support our local communities should not be at an unfair disadvantage because of the tax loophole,” McConnaughay said.

Friday, the Illinois Supreme Court struck down a 2011 state law that had slapped a tax on the sales of merchandise peddled by online retailers through partners in Illinois.

The law had been backed by large bipartisan majorities in both houses of the Illinois General Assembly, including many local state lawmakers.

The law also was promoted by the Illinois Retail Merchants Association and some of the country’s largest retailers, among others.

They said the law would close a “loophole” which created what they called an unfair advantage for Internet-based sellers over local shops.

The state high court recognized that purpose.

But in its 6-1 decision, the court said the Illinois law is in conflict with a federal law forbidding the establishment of a “discriminato-

ry tax on electronic commerce.”

The ruling upheld a lower court decision, in part, in which a Cook County judge determined that the state law was both in violation of the federal Internet Tax Freedom Act and unconstitutional, as it established a tax on businesses that do not have “a substantial nexus” in the state.

The state high court did not rule on the constitutionality of the law.

The law had been challenged by the Performance Marketing Association, a trade group representing the interests of online sellers that generate sales by advertising on other websites and drawing customers to their sales sites via links.

The PMA had argued the law discriminated by placing a tax on the online performance marketers that it did not place on similarly situated out-of-state “offline” sellers, who use print or broadcast advertising to achieve similar goals.

The state Supreme Court backed that argument.

Locally, response to the decision was fairly muted. Roger Breisch, executive director of the Batavia Chamber of Commerce, said the is-

The fight against bullying has just begun In August, dozens of youths and community leaders in the Kaneland area donned bright green T-shirts, prominently featuring four words – “Be Nice. Be Happy” – and marched in the Elburn Days parade, behind the banner of a group called the Kindness Campaign.

It was a key milestone in the fight against bullying in the Kaneland area, especially significant because of the wide range of organizations that rushed to embrace the message – that children should be encouraged to be nice to each other. That effort continues to grow. And while the group’s leaders acknowledge that bullying no doubt still exists in the area, there now exists cooperation where there had been confrontation. School district officials, police leaders, Girl Scouts and other community members walked in the parade with the group.

Kindness in Kaneland Week has been celebrated for the past few days, with events at Kaneland schools and beyond – “random acts of kindness” were rewarded at Kaneland High School. This weekend, three bully-themed movies, including the “Bully” documentary, will be shown at the Sugar Grove Public Library. And it helps that the effort is taking place during October, which is designated as National Bullying Prevention Month.

Bullying is a big deal, and the Tri-Cities and Kaneland areas are not immune. It is unacceptable that there are some youths who are afraid to go to school, out of fear of being belittled, physically attacked or verbally abused. Nationwide, there have been some prominent cases in the news. Two girls in Florida are facing charges after a bullied 12-year-old committed suicide.

In Pennsylvania, three teenagers could face charges after a video posted online showed a 17-year-old getting punched in the face during a bus ride home, with the bus driver criticized for continuing to drive during and after the attack.

Don’t read the datelines on those out-ofstate stories and fool yourself into believing it doesn’t happen here. It’s obvious it does. We tackled the issue in depth in an award-winning series last year, and we heard many stories of local students who were facing bullying problems in our coverage area.

It’s important to salute the effort made by the Kindness Campaign and to urge its leaders to continue the fight. The journey has just begun.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Making a difference To the Editor: ALS, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, can trap a person inside a body that no longer works. Daily activities can be challenging and may be impossible.

Socializing becomes harder and people often feel isolated.

But at the 12th annual Les Turner ALS Walk For Life, the ALS community joined together in support of one another. Held at Soldier Field, the event attracted more than 6,500 people, and participants have raised more than $825,000 for research, patient care and educational programs.

Teams honored people living with ALS and paid tribute to those who have lost their battle. Participants gave 110 percent. For example, Paul Launer’s Iron Horse Brigade raised $78,000 to become the top fundraising team, and the Walk For Life family chairs, The Bob Simonds Team, inspired others by raising $57,000.

On behalf of the Les Turner ALS Foundation, I want to thank the participants, volunteers, donors and sponsors for their support. We were thrilled to welcome back Kathy Hart of 101.9-FM The Mix and Phil Schwarz of ABC-7 as our hosts, and were touched by their personal stories of how ALS has affected their families.

Established in 1977, the Les Turner ALS Foundation is one of the nation’s preeminent organizations dedicated to the treatment and elimination of ALS. The foundation is affiliated with Northwestern Medicine, where it funds two research laboratories and a multi-disciplinary clinical program. Kindness from motorcyclists

Listening to constituents I’m calling in response to the comment in Sound Off about how the servants of the American people don’t pay attention to their constituents. As a member of the St. Charles Library Board, we are there to serve the public. Every board meeting has a time for public comments or statements by members of the community.

If you have something to say or bring to the board’s attention, citizens are always welcome to come and speak at our board meetings.

I don’t know what district this person is from, but the bottom line is if you want to be heard, you can always attend the meeting.

But you have to understand that every individual’s opinion is their own opinion.

You might be for or against something, but that doesn’t mean the whole community is for or against it. Library board members serve for no pay.

They give their pay because of love for the community and love of the library, and they’re doing their best to make the best decisions for all of the community and I, personally, am proud to serve.

For the past eight years, we haven’t had jobs here, moving to the Tri-Cities area. We still have kept our health insurance. How do we do it? Nobody gets Christmas gifts. Nobody gets birthday gifts.

We have cut down on eating out, fun times and everything like that.

Yes, it can be done. Yes, Social Security, Medicaid and Medicare is good, yes, but I doubt that the people who never had health insurance will pay these high premiums. We have $5,000 deductible for the both of us, each.

Obamacare good?

To a point I’m responding to “Obamacare is good.” It’s good that the people who don’t have health insurance pay their monthly premiums like

regarding the Geneva library.

Compared to surrounding communities (St. Charles, Batavia, even Plano) – our facilities are lacking. We’re way overdue for an upgrade, and it’s been reported that previous studies have shown the current location to be impossible to retrofit to future needs. The way we use libraries has changed, and it’s time we changed what we have. I do take exception to using the library for tutoring purposes. Although this may seem a legitimate use and is “educational,” know that these tutors are business people and charge for their services. Libraries should not be used to provide free, public space for those engaged in commercial activities.

These tutors and their students often take up the entire reading area on the first floor and are noisy. I’d be interested in knowing if other libraries allow this.

In a time where it seems small, independent businesses are closing, thank goodness for the Blue Goose Market. They have the best meat, bakery and deli departments in the valley. They also have a great floral department, which is a good thing because most of the floral shops in the local area have closed. I’ve shopped there for years and have rarely been disappointed. Just wanted to give a shout out.

The future of libraries I read with great interest the article in the Oct. 2 edition

What’s affordable?

The delinquent tax list came out, and Batavia has a substantial amount of tax delinquencies.

And then also, it was indicated that affordable housing has declined in Batavia. But one of the definitions of affordable housing is housing that costs 30 percent or less of income. And they say the majority of affordable housing already is occupied by owners, but they failed to mention that the 30 percent of income that is reported should be – but probably isn’t – the taxes you have to pay.

Housing in Batavia has become unaffordable, even for people who already live in what used to be affordable houses, simply because the taxes have gone through the roof. When you’re looking for a house that was affordable when you bought it 25 or 30 years ago and you look at what you’re paying today in taxes, you’re paying almost $700 a month in real estate taxes.

Then you add in the increases in utilities and storm water, you add up those increases, and you see the municipal taxes added to your utilities, and you can see why there is no affordable housing anywhere in Illinois, especially in Batavia, Geneva, St. Charles and Aurora.

Mall public hearing to resume Tuesday

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Plan Commission is expected to continue a public hearing about Charlestowne Mall.

The commission is to meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the St. Charles City Council Chambers, 2 E. Main St., St. Charles.

SC Main 3800 LLC, the contract buyers of Charlestowne Mall, are requesting to amend the shopping center’s PUD ordinance to allow for proposed improvements.

Proposed changes include removing the former Sears store, downsizing and relocating the food court and reconfiguring the front entrances to the mall and movie theater with new retail and

dining units.

The mall will remain enclosed.

The contract buyers also want to add commercial buildings, such as restaurants and banks, along East Main Street.

Members of the new ownership team have said construction could begin as early as the start of construction season next year, with a

target completion date of late summer or early fall 2015.

The redeveloped mall is expected to have about 100 dining and entertainment tenants as well as the current anchors – Von Maur, Carson Pirie Scott, Kohl’s and Classic Cinemas.

The Plan Commission’s recommendation on the PUD request will be forwarded to the St. Charles City Council.

Road trips with roaches, great big snake GOOD NATURED Pam Otto Regular readers of this space may recall the time, 2½ years ago, that I arranged to trade a few reptiles from my personal collection for assorted critters that would become display animals at the then yet-to-open Hickory Knolls Discovery Center.

Using travel carriers and assorted plastic crates, I loaded up the truck and drove to, not Beverly, but the hills outside of Galena.

There, in a Walmart parking lot, I met up with representatives from the Northeast Iowa Reptile Rescue. We transacted our business and, in a matter of moments, the rescue people were headed back to Iowa with two tortoises and a lizard, and I was motoring back to St. Charles with a handsome and only slightly bitey black ratsnake, and two tarantulas to boot.

There’s something oddly soothing about riding along with nonhuman – and specifically, nonmammalian – companions. Unlike a dog, reptiles and arachnids don’t pant on you, drool or ride with their heads out the window. And unlike a cat, they don’t mew or yowl incessantly. In fact, they typically don’t do much at all, especially if they’re securely enclosed and kept at a comfortable temperature.

We reached our destination, the Pottawatomie Community Center without incident.

The ratsnake, now named Randy, and the tarantulas, known as T1 and T2, have been hardworking members of our education animal team ever since.

At the time of The Great Reptile Ride, I thought that it may have been a once-in-alifetime sort of experience. I should have known better.

This past week the opportunity presented itself again. In this case, just like the last, the animal was beautiful; her back was covered with a stunning pattern of dark bands, and her smooth scales reflected light like iridescent gems. But unlike last time, where my

Eight feet, I would guess, with a girth similar to that of a two-pound meatloaf.

Boa constrictor ssp., or Bo as I came to call her, had come to Hickory Knolls through an odd set of circumstances that probably will never be repeated. An escaped pet, she’d done time in a cat carrier (minus the cat, I hope), as well as a large plastic tote with holes punched in the sides, before

arriving, literally, on our doorstep.

Now, before we go any further into this week’s story, I need to stress that Hickory Knolls is not an animal rescue or rehabilitation facility. It’s true that all the animals we have on display were acquired from previous owners, but we have neither the staff, space nor skill level required to take in every homeless animal that presents itself. We can sometimes provide advice about placement, but only as

time permits. And we’re really not equipped to handle exotics of any sort.

OK, with that said, let’s get back to Bo. I’ve seen boa constrictors on display at zoos, and seen baby boas for sale in pet stores. But until last week, I’d never tried to interact with one, up close and personal. As a result, I’d also never been hissed at or lunged at, nor had I ever gotten a really good look at a boa’s amazing array of teeth. Bo, bless her heart, obliged on all counts.

Her hisses, which she’d uncork as a warning whenever we moved her crate, were unlike anything I’d ever heard before. Billy, our bullsnake, can snort pretty good, especially when he’s getting ready to shed. But Bo’s hisses would last a minute at a time, clearly indicating that she wanted to be left alone. (Hmm, Bo? Or GarBo?) Her teeth were impressive, too, with two rows on top and a single row on the bottom. They weren’t huge, but they were long enough to be easily seen.

They curved backward, and looked like they would definitely leave a mark. I vowed to not find out whether observation could prove true.

With the issue of escaped exotics being a very real concern, even here in Illinois, Bo showed some potential to be used for community education.

But after several attempts at handling that involved three staff members plus myself; a big stick; a sandbox lid that doubled as a shield; and a sledgehammer, just in case ... I knew that I’d soon be making another Reptile Ride. The only question was, where?

Luckily, we have some pretty solid connections in the herpetological world, and it wasn’t long before I made contact with the Friends of Scales Reptile Rescue, a northern Illinois-based group with “a

gave me a large “starter colony” of somewhere between 75 and 100 roaches, a gift that, because of the roaches’ rapid reproductive rate, will just keep on giving. Even better, it will save us a considerable amount of money since we won’t have to buy as many crickets for our lizard, salamanders, tarantulas, etc.

With Bo safe and sound, and a new connection to reptile rescuers made, it was time to head back to St. Charles. I put the Tupperware container of roaches next to me on the front seat, and hit the road.

About 20 seconds into the trip, I became aware of a sound – a subtle crunching and crackling that was intriguing, but also vaguely unsettling.

And if it says so on the Internet, it’s got to be true, right?

Indeed, it was. FoS is an all-volunteer group dedicated to making life better for sick, injured or unwanted scaly and/or spineless pets. (FoS also rescues invertebrates like tarantulas and scorpions.)

Erica, or Air, Mede is the president and founder, and when I emailed her about Bo her immediate response was, “We can help.”

The only trick was going to be getting Bo to Wheeling, where she then would be placed in foster care. I knew I was up for a ride, but was she?

She’d cleared her digestive tract earlier in the day, which meant we’d be unlikely to have issues with car sickness.

I peeked inside her crate, and she raised her head and flicked her tongue at me. No hiss! That was a good sign, too. I thought briefly about removing her water dish, so as to prevent spills along the way, but Bo coiled herself around it so tightly, I decided to leave it alone.

I hooked some bungee cords into place, to make sure Bo stayed secure during the trip, and off we went. During our hourlong journey, I once

again took note of the soothing silence that accompanies a ride with an unruffled reptile.

No excited barks or yips, no scratching or chewing. And we didn’t have to make a “comfort stop” either.

Upon arrival at our destination, Erica welcomed us and gave me some paperwork to fill out. She identified Bo as a Peruvian subspecies and commented more than once on the snake’s gorgeous coloration. She then explained how Bo would be given a health exam and treated prophylactically for mites, then put up for adoption.

As we chatted, I couldn’t help but see and hear a large plastic tote on the floor in Erica’s living room. The rustling sounds emitting from it did not seem to be vertebrate in origin, and my pulse quickened in excitement as I thought of the possibilities.

Hoping against hope, I asked, “cockroaches?” Happily, Erica answered yes. Long story short, Blaptica dubia, or Dubia roaches, are a nutritious food source that is appropriate for many of the education animals we keep at Hickory Knolls. (Contrary to popular belief, only about 1 percent of the world’s cockroach species are considered pests. The rest, including Dubias, are helpful in surprising ways. More on this at a later date.)

Sycamore quarterback Devin Mottet left the game in the first half with an injury, but backup Nick Feuerbach passed for 124 yards, ran for 23 more and caught a 30-yard pass to help lead Sycamore to a 31-21 win.

The Knights (7-1, 3-1 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) took the lead with 7:30 left in the first quarter when Isaac Swithers ran for a 5-yard touchdown to cap an opening drive that included 61 rushing yards.

In the second, Brett Weaver caught a drive-opening 30yard pass early in the second quarter, and the Spartans drove to the 13-yard line.

They were forced to settle for a 30-yard field goal by Tyler Maveus.

After Kaneland senior Dylan Nauert returned a kickoff to the Sycamore 44, the Knights added to their lead late in the second when Drew David rolled out and found Nate Dyer for a 9-yard touchdown pass.

Sycamore (8-0, 4-0 NI Big 12 East) responded quickly.

Three plays later, Feuerbach ran for a 30-yard touchdown with 3:15 left in the half.

Early in the second half, Feuerbach found Ben Niemann for a 31-yard reception and Dion Hooker, who played in his first game back after an injury, ran for an 11-yard touchdown to make the score 17-14.

Kaneland looked down and out on the next drive after a bad snap left them with a third-and-36 situation. But David found John Pruett for a 40-yard pass on the next play before Brandon Bishop caught a 28-yard touchdown.

With 11:54 remaining, Jack Dargis picked off David at the 35-yard line, and the Spartans capitalized when Riley Hurley pounded in a

1-yard touchdown run to give Sycamore a 24-21 lead.

On fourth-and-2 late with just more than five minutes left, Feuerbach scrambled and found Colan Treml wide open for a 20-yard touchdown to give Sycamore a 31-21 lead with the PAT. Sycamore’s defense held strong. Dargis and Josh Hunt sacked David in the waning minutes, and the Knights couldn’t get back on the board.

The Spartans remain undefeated, and would win the NI Big 12 East outright for the first time with a win at Yorkville. Kaneland needs a win over Morris and a Sycamore loss to share the title.

BATAVIA – Batavia assumed the victory formation as Friday’s first half against St. Charles East ended, content to sit on a huge lead after recovering a Saints fumble.

The Bulldogs will tell you anything could have happened in the final 24 minutes of running-clock Upstate Eight Conference River Division football. The truth was, the outcome settled in for both sides sometime during Batavia’s first-half explosion.

Batavia dominated from the get-go, visiting the end zone on each of its first five possessions. East countered with four punts and a turnover on downs in the same span. Yup, Batavia’s swagger about told the tale of Bulldogs 47, Saints 14.

“It’s a lot of motivation for us when we get three-andouts and the offense scores, and then we get three-andouts and the offense scores,” Bulldogs junior defensive end Josh Leonhard said. “Everybody gets everything going.”

Batavia (7-1, 5-0 UEC River) clinched at least a share of its third straight conference title in a flash against East (53, 3-2).

None of Batavia’s six firsthalf scoring drives lasted longer than 2:53. Four scoring drives came in the first quarter, when the Bulldogs gained 263 yards on 17 plays.

“I think a lot of it is the mentality,” Saints senior wide receiver/defensive back Brannon Barry said.

“They’re good and they believe that they’re good, and we know we’re good, too. And we believe that we’re good, but we’ve just got to work on executing, executing our assignments and executing our jobs. Because the game plan and everything is there.

We’ve just got to execute better.”

“Oh, man, when you see Scaccia just running up the field doing what he does, there’s nothing like it,” Batavia junior center Patrick Gamble said. “That’s why we do what we do. It’s unreal. It’s awesome.”

Scaccia, who added a fourth TD in the second quarter – Batavia led, 40-0, at half-

time to trigger the running clock – naturally credited a deep rotation of offensive linemen. The unit is rallying behind the recent season-ending injury to guard Mitchell Krusz and in addition to freeing Scaccia helped Coffey throw for three first-half touchdowns.

But, true to the form of “BULLDOGS” appearing on the back of Batavia’s jerseys

instead of players’ names, Scaccia brought the whole group into his success.

“We worked on certain things throughout the week and we executed it well. We had a great week of practice, so it was easy to come out here and execute what we’ve been doing,” he said.

About the only thing to go wrong for Batavia in the first half was a point-after miss and block.

East coach Mike Fields conceded “a good, old-fashioned butt-kicking” and promised the playoff-eligible Saints would return to work this week in a bid to seal a postseason bid with a sixth victory at Larkin.

Limited to 217 yards of offense – much of it after halftime – East scored the final 14 points. Jimmy Mitchell had a 17-yard scoring run with 5:05 to play before connecting with A.J. Washington for a 10yard scoring pass in the final minute.

Boenzi sack seals Vikes’ 5th straight win

By DENNIS D. JACOBS editorial@kcchronicle.com AURORA – Metea Valley’s offense shredded Geneva for most of Friday night’s Upstate Eight Conference crossover game, but when the Vikings most needed a big defensive play, they got it.

Senior linebacker Joe Boenzi sacked Mustang quarterback Blaise Bell on fourth down with less than a minute to play to preserve a 49-45 Geneva victory.

“The defensive line did a great job pushing them outside,” Boenzi said. “Our corners and safeties did a good job guarding their guys. I just had an opportunity to make a play.”

Geneva coach Rob Wicinski had a feeling the game would go down to the wire.

“I just told [the players], all we have to do is make one more play than them,” Wicins-

ki said. “Some kids made some plays down the stretch on both offense and defense.”

Geneva junior quarterback Daniel Santacaterina and his receivers were making plays all night.

Santacaterina threw for 359 yards and five Daniel touchdowns.

Santacaterina “The whole offense was making plays,” Santacaterina said. “The line gave us time.

The defense made stops when they had Kyle Brown to. We scored when we had to. It was just an awesome offensive effort.”

With the two teams trading touchdowns all night, the Mustangs (4-4) used a successful onside kick in the third quarter to put together back-toback touchdown drives to take a 38-27 lead.

“Their running back [Jay Parker] is great,” Boenzi said.

“He ran hard. Their offensive line pushed. They kept fighting and we just didn’t give up.

We fought back. We made one me play than they did.”

Parker gained 153 yards on 20 carries. Teammate Christian Wilcox added 135 yards on

the ground, with 61 coming on one touchdown run.

Santacaterina hit Max Woodworth wide open over the middle for a 39-yard touchdown play to cut the Metea Valley’s lead to 42-38 with 5:21 to play. The Vikings then stopped Wilcox just short of a first down on a fourth-and-2 play at the Geneva 22.

Santacaterina then connected with junior Pace Temple on a 42-yard pass play to set up Miller’s TD plunge.

Geneva receivers made highlight-reel plays all night long, frequently winning battles with defensive backs for 50-50 balls.

“We’ve got a lot of playmakers,” Santacaterina said. “If I get time to throw, with those playmakers, we’re going to make things happen.”

The momentum of the game finally swung in the North Stars’ favor at the end of the second quarter when North stopped a Larkin 76yard drive on the 2-yard line.

The stop kept the score at the half at 27-14 North.

“We had our backs against the wall at the half and they came up with a big, goal line stand,” said North coach Rob Pomazak, whose team bounced back from a lopsided loss last week to Batavia.

“Those are the little things we need to do to win games and hopefully get to the next level.”

North widened its lead to 35-14 in the third quarter on Kurtz’s third touchdown of the night.

Reece Conroyd scored the team’s sixth touchdown on the opening drive of the four quarter on a 1-yard run.

The last score came on an 11-yard run by Nick Edlund.

Marmion attempted one last drive at the end of the game, but Padilla was able to supplement his earlier touchdown run with an interception to end the Cadets’ hope of a comeback.

“I just had great jams on the line of scrimmage by my cornerback and my linebackers,” Padilla said. “I just read the quarterback’s eyes, and fortunately I came up with the ball.”

Casey was thrilled with his team’s effort on both sides of the ball, particularly on the line.

“We made plays when we needed to,” Casey said. “We told them all week, and we told them at 4:30 in our meeting that this game is gonna be won or lost up front.”

After a scoreless first quarter, Krueger opened up the scoring with a 3-yard keeper to cap off a 90-yard Cadet drive. Neither side was able to sustain a strong drive until kicker Riley DeMoss hit a 22yard field goal as time expired in the first half to put Marmion up, 10-0.

ELGIN – The St. Charles North football team remained in the hunt for a playoff spot by beating Larkin, 48-20, Friday night at Memorial Field.

The North Stars, now 4-4 overall, will need to win next Saturday at South Elgin and hope its murky playoff points situation takes a turn for the better to make the postseason for the first time since 2009.

At first, it didn’t look like it would be an easy win for the North Stars in the Upstate Eight Conference River game.

Larkin’s Damion Clemons ran 86 yards for a touchdown on the team’s opening play from scrimmage.

But North (4-4, 3-3) scored three touchdowns in the first quarter on two runs by Evan Kurtz sandwiched between one by Dom Sidari.

Three extra points by North kicker Kat Stutesman put the North Stars up 21-7 at the end of the first frame. Her second kick of the quarter set a new North Star career PAT record of 36. The senior connected on two more kicks during the night to raise her total to 38.

AURORA – Fireworks went off and fans swarmed the field after the Aurora Central Catholic football team edged Marmion, 13-12, in an upset victory at Bob Stewart Field on Friday night.

Marmion (6-2, 4-2 Suburban Christian Conference Blue) had not fallen to Aurora Central Catholic (6-2, 4-2 SCC Gold) since 2007, according to Chargers coach Brian Casey.

The win solidifies ACC’s second straight playoff berth and served as a memorable end to the teams’ SCC rivalry as both schools will move to different conferences next year.

Entering the second half down 10-0, Aurora Central Catholic methodically drove down the field exclusively through its ground game.

Running back Julian Rios capped off the first drive of the second half with a 39-yard jet sweep behind the left side of the offensive line.

“I saw a corner. I saw my blocker and I threw my blocker into one of the defenders, I cut back and all I saw was grass, and I scored,” Rios said.

NORMAL – Cool temperatures and pesky winds swirled about Illinois State’s Weibring Golf Club as the Class 2A boys golf state tournament opened Friday.

The conditions mirrored what Burlington Central athletes face on campus during most days this time of year.

Maybe that’s why the Rockets enter today’s final round in sound position in the team trophy race.

Led by Indiana-bound senior Matt Weber’s even-par 71 – three shots off the individual lead – BC finished with an aggregate 314, tied for third place with Rockford Boylan. The total is two shots behind leader Pontiac and one shy of Dunlap. Peoria Notre Dame (320) and St. Francis (323) are among those in close pursuit, but the Rockets like their chances of keeping pace if they can keep an even keel.

said. “They weren’t worried about anybody else, just that they could play well.”

There certainly were challenges along the way. Weber had to work to stay calm after early hiccups on the heels of playing the front nine at 4-under par, a surge that helped him grab the early individual lead.

Consecutive bogeys to end the front side threatened to derail junior Austin Niesel, who carded a 76. Andrew Sherman (83) and Jacob Ledebuhr (84) also scored for BC. St. Francis benefited from consistent rounds from Dan Mochel (78), Jonathan Nocek (81), Connor Buckley (82) and John Stolte (82). Buckley recovered from a quadruple bogey on the second hole.

“Our biggest thing was not to put ourselves out of position,” Spartans coach Greg Baresel said. “They went out and they played well.

“It was cloudy and windy and a tough day, and I thought our guys pushed through. It’s stuff that we’ve been doing all year, so our team knows how to do it. At conference,

regionals, sectionals, we’ve been pulling through all year long. We treated it as much as we could as any other meet.”

Playing in the 3A tournament at The Den at Fox Creek Golf Course in adjacent Bloomington, St. Charles North senior Raghav Cherala carded a 7-over 79 to tie for 50th, seven shots off the lead.

North Stars coach Rob Prentiss lauded Cherala’s ball striking, but putting woes contributed to a stretch of bogey-bogey-double bogey early in Cherala’s second nine.

“He’s real comfortable with how to play he golf course,” Prentiss said. “He’s hitting the ball well, so I look for him to score better tomorrow. I think he knows what to expect now.”

In the 1A tournament at Bloomington’s Prairie Vista Golf Course, Aurora Christian freshman Brett Seward is 11 shots off the lead after registering a 7-over 79.

A handful of Kane County Chronicle-area individiuals also are part of the 2A field, joining in the chase of overall leader David Perkins of East Peoria, who had a 3-under 68.

North Stars slip past Hawks

Rosary, St. Charles North seek Day 2 improvement KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE DECATUR – Rosary shaved 12 strokes from last week’s sectional score as the Class A girls golf state tournament opened Friday at Red Tail Run Golf Course.

The Royals’ collective 387 still ranks well behind tournament-leading Nashville (325), but for a jelling group that’s in uncharted waters, being in the 12-team field, period, feels fantastic.

“We’ve already achieved a lot to get here, to get here for the fist time in school history, and we’re going to keep doing everything we can to do better,” Royals coach Joe Hughes said.

“We kept grinding, we just kept working hard. We just kept hitting the shot that was at our feet no matter what

happened and did the best we could.”

Senior Victoria Phipps paced the Royals with a 9-over-par 81 in a round that saw her play her second nine holes three strokes better than her first nine.

“She had everything working today,” Hughes said. “Her putter was going. Her driver was hitting every fairway.

She just maintained that relaxed attitude that helped her put a low number up there.”

Jenna Streich (94), Morgan Martinez (103) and Annika Strolle (109) followed Hughes.

Ridgewood senior Sabrina Bonanno is the individual leader with a 5-under 67.

Competing at the AA meet at Hickory Point Golf Club in nearby Forsyth, St. Charles North finished with a team

round of 335.

That score matched the North Stars’ effort at sectionals, but ultimately ranks 10th in the state field, 36 strokes behind leader Loyola Academy, which had two players with at least four birdies.

North senior Carly Hudon, returning to the state meet for the first time since her freshman year at Sycamore, led North with an 8-over 80.

Freshmen standouts Kate Lillie and Gianna Furrie registered very similar 81s.

Both players absorbed a double bogey on the Par 4 seventh hole and birdied a Par 4 hole on the back nine.

Jessica Grill and Gabi Spinazze both shot 93s for North.

North is making the third state appearance in school history and first since 2005.

“It was such a great feeling to win this game tonight,” LeGare said. “I think we were just trying in the second half to keep doing what we were doing and be persistent in our attack. It was really just a matter of connecting those passes in the second half.

I mean we did have some chances in the first half, but we just didn’t finish.”

The 6-foot tall Legare would strike for a second time with 7:49 left in the match when he outran a Hawks defender into the penalty area and curled a right-footed shot past Peralta from 10 yards out for the 2-0 advantage.

“I liked the second goal I scored tonight, actually,” LeGare said. “I think because I was able to beat the defender to the ball and curl it into their net. It was nice.”

The North Stars will now get the chance to upset their crosstown rival next week and try to avenge a 1-0 defeat earlier this month.

“I think we have just been so close in a lot of our matches this year,” North Stars coach Eric Willson said. “It has just been a matter of getting the kids to believe in themselves that they can win.”

ST. CHARLES – Friday night’s matchup between the St. Charles North boys soccer team and Hoffman Estates gave the North Stars the chance for a postseason win in an otherwise difficult season.

The North Stars came into the match as No.16 seed in the IHSA Class 3A St. Charles East Sectional while the Hawks entered as the No. 17 seed, with the winner getting the chance to extend their season by at least an extra few days.

The North Stars slipped past the Hawks, 2-0, and will face crosstown rival St. Charles East in the 3A St. Charles East Regional semifinal at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The winner of that match will face the winner of the other regional semifinal match between Rolling Meadows and Schaumburg in the championship match Friday.

The opening half found both teams going back and forth up and down the field with the Hawks only managing one shot on North Stars senior net minder Billy Larsen.

The home side would not do all that much better as the North Stars could only get off three shots in the opening 40 minutes of play against Hawks sophomore goalkeeper Christian Peralta.

The second half found the North Stars with more of the advantage, which would eventually lead to their breaking through against the Hawks.

North (3-11-3) grabbed a 1-0 lead with 13:07 left in regulation when, off a free kick taken by Nick Graham from the midfield area, the ball found the head of Hope College recruit, Phillip LeGare. From 10 yards out, LeGare headed the ball past the out-stretched

Bill Koehn wrapped up his 30-year run coaching the Geneva boys golf program earlier this week, including a three-year run coaching both the Vikings boys and girls.

The Vikings gave Koehn a strong swan song, winning the UEC River championship this fall. In this week’s Weekend Chit-chat with Chronicle sports editor Jay Schwab, Koehn reflects on his decades mentoring the Vikings. The following is an edited transcript:

How has the sport changed the most in your 30 years?

Well, I think mostly it’s the improvement in equipment and then the popularity of just golf in general. I mean, when I first started, we didn’t get many kids coming out. Gosh, you were lucky if you had enough kids to field the team, and then with the onset of Tiger Woods, [the game] really took off. … All the sudden, I had 50, 60 kids showing up for tryouts.

In what ways did you change as a coach during these decades?

I don’t know – it’s kind of funny, we were joking about

it the other day, I was telling one of the assistants, when I first started coaching, there weren’t too many kids who could beat me playing golf, and now, if they can’t beat me, I cut them. … The caliber of the kids playing golf today is so much better.

But in terms of working with the kids, has your approach been similar?

I’ve tried to stay pretty much the same. Obviously, I’ve learned a lot over the years about dealing with kids, and just being a teacher, it seems every year you get a little better at doing things.

Have you kept a lot of memorabilia, or are you not much of a pack rat?

Oh no, I’ve got some files.

I know we won 10 conference titles in 30 years. We finished first place 10 times, we finished second place 10 times, and then third place, we finished five times … Career dual meets, we were 239 wins and 86 losses. Conference dual record, it was 145-48, and in the home course record for all dual meets played on our home course – and we played on four home courses over

Weekend Chit-chat with GENEVA BOYS GOLF COACH BILL KOEHN the years (Mill Creek, Geneva Golf Club, Eaglebrook and Prairie Landing) – was 141-18.

We lost only 18 home matches in 30 years, and at Mill Creek we were 73 wins and 6 losses, and at Geneva Golf Club, we were 57 wins, 11 losses.

Is there a clear-cut best player from all those years?

Oh, clear-cut, no. You’d probably look back and statistically probably look at Mike O’Neal being one of the top kids. Mike went on to play in the Canadian PGA. I’ve got some other kids out there, I had two state runner-up individuals. Back in 1986, a young guy by name of Kevin Kros, he finished second down at Arrowhead Country Club in Chillicothe, and then in 1989,

a young man by the name of Mike Vegeler finished second place the year we were there as a team and finished fifth.

How emotional was this last year for you?

You’ve been doing something for such a long time, it’s really hard to say goodbye to the friends I’ve made. I’ve made many good friends over the years, coaches, and I was really fortunate this year.

I had two former players come back and volunteer to be assistants with me this year, and that really made it special for me, plus we were honoring the memory of a former teammate (Raymond Kaligian) who passed away.

Bryan Knapp, who came back and was an assistant this year, was Ray’s teammate, so that really made it special, and I totally enjoyed this year. It was a lot of fun, and Grant Douglas was the 2008 graduate who came back, Grant just came out of PGA school and was looking to get some experience, and really helped Tim Pease at the sophomore level.

What kind of shape is the program in for the next few years?

Well, we were pretty senior-heavy this year. We had four pretty good seniors that really [contributed] this year but the three juniors out there were an important part of the team, and then we had a sophomore, Mac Feehan, and then what can you say about (freshman) Graham Lillibridge that hasn’t been said already. He just has so much potential as a golfer, and hopefully he’s going to be around to help these guys out in the future. Graham is really focusing on hockey but he has a lot of potential on the golf course, too.

You mentioned you’d like to stay around game. At the high school level or otherwise?

You know, I don’t know. I don’t know what’s out there.

I know that I had some people talk to me about [being an assistant], and I’m going to take some time away. I’m going to stay away awhile but I’m going to be popping into tournaments just to say, ‘Hi.’ Like I said, I made a lot of friends in high school golf in the area and I want to follow up with what they’re doing. I don’t know. Something might come along.

Upstate Eight River volleyball race short but sweet The saying maintains there can be too much of a good thing, but this year’s Upstate Eight Conference girls volleyball season shows the opposite is worse.

There just haven’t been enough Tri-Cities volleyball showdowns in a season begging for them. The Upstate Eight Conference race will come to a head next week, with Tuesday’s Geneva-St. Charles East match likely to determine which team will tie St. Charles North for the conference championship.

As of last Tuesday afternoon, all four Tri-Cities teams – Batavia, Geneva, East and North – had only one conference loss. Then again, the losses don’t pile up too high with only six conference matches counting toward the River race.

The seven River teams only play each other once in conference play, and when you take into account that most years there are at least two or three weaker programs, that

only leaves a few meaningful conference tests for each of the contenders.

Geneva coach KC Johnsen said he’d like teams to play each other home and away – as is the case in sports such as basketball – to create a larger sample size for determining the conference champion.

Johnsen, however, isn’t dwelling on the UEC’s scheduling procedure, noting that the one-crack-at-each-school format makes for some exciting, high-stakes showdowns.

“It’s not hard to find some positives about that situation, so that’s what we do with it,” Johnsen said. “It does make for some pretty intense moments.”

Batavia seemed on the doorstep of sharing a conference title Tuesday after dominating host St. Charles East in the first game of the match.

But the Saints – despite missing two key middle hitters – found their footing in time to turn back the Bulldogs, 19-25, 25-20, 25-15.

“I love the competitiveness of this conference,” Batavia coach Lori Trippi-Payne said after her team’s loss to East.

“Doesn’t it make it all worthwhile? If we would have come out here and won this match tonight, wouldn’t that make it feel like ‘Gosh, we have to be really good to win this conference.’ ” Trippi-Payne said conference coaches will likely re-examine bylaws about how scheduling is handled, but said she has mixed feelings about playing intradivision opponents twice each season.

She used this year’s East team as an example of the pros and cons, noting that Saints coach Jennie Kull surely would like another crack at St. Charles North after the crosstown North Stars won the lone meeting, but adding that East might not have had room on its schedule for defending state champion Benet – which East defeated – if another six matches were accounted for with more conference dates.

But playing 12 UEC River games doesn’t seem like overreaching. More than half of a team’s schedule would still be nonconference and UEC crossover opponents, and there is less chance of a conference title being dictated by injuries or other shortterm circumstances that can make for a screwy result on a certain night.

For now, the focus shifts to Tuesday’s East-Geneva match, with North needing only to beat lightly regarded Streamwood to clinch its share of the conference.

“It’s not hard to ind some positives about that situation, so that’s what we do with it. It does make for some pretty intense moments.”

KC Johnsen Geneva girls volleyball coach “The past couple years I’ve been playing in this conference, there’s always been one team that’s been dominating, and this year it’s so much fun,” East libero Anne Hughes said. “It just makes the games more intense and more energetic. Every ball, every point matters.”

It’s a sprint, not a marathon, and this year’s race is a photo finish.

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE WHEATON – James Butler rushed five times for 147 yards and two scores Friday, boosting the St. Francis football team to a 56-7 victory against Guerin in a Suburban Christian Conference crossover.

The Spartans (4-4) must win their regular-season finale against SCC Blue rival St. Edward next week to become playoff-eligible.

“We just want to go out and play a great game against a tough, top-level opponent,” Spartans offensive coordinator Jesse Pierce said. “As you have seen, there’s no easy ones in our league. … It’s essentially a playoff game one week early.”

Seven different players scored for St. Francis, which snapped a four-game skid. T.J. Jackson scored on a drive that included three would-be Butler touchdowns called back becauase of a penalty.

The clinic will be presented by the Spartan boys and girls basketball coaching staffs. The clinic is aimed at teaching the fundamentals of the game to area youth coaches.

The Immanuel Lutheran fifth- and sixth-grade volleyball team took second place at the Eagle Classic tournament, which was held at Immanuel Lutheran. Three other schools from the DuPage Lutheran Athletic Conference participated in the tournament: Bethany Lutheran from Naperville, Trinity Lutheran from Roselle, St. Peter Lutheran from Schaumburg. Each team played three matches in the round-robin tournament.

Immanuel and Bethany both ended the tournament with a 2-1 record. Bethany claimed first place by virtue of a tie-breaker and Immanuel came in second. Trinity and St. Peter finished with a 1-2 record and tied for third place. Members of the Eagle volleyball team include: Ethan Bello, Isabella Landrum, Macie Rummel, Elie Babb, Narita Lambert, Mikal Lange, Josh Suydam, Melanie Williams and Kelli Kouba. The Eagles are coached by Sharon Dalpini, Jill Lange, and Jenna Lane.

The great suburban clean-laundry crisis In my house, the phrase “laundry crisis” refers to that oddly disconcerting moment when the natural order of things gets thrown out of whack. You know, when all of the laundry is done.

My teenager agrees.

“I depend on the cycle of dirty and clean laundry to keep my room neat,” Noah laments whenever this happens.

He’s right. Things get ugly when we have too much clean laundry. Wait, I should clarify. When we have too much clean, folded, hung-up-and-putaway laundry. The thing is, we simply don’t have enough storage in this little 145-year-old house to properly stow it all.

When it’s all been laundered and efforts are made to actually put it somewhere logical, it gets jammed into drawers and smushed into closets, of which there are only three in this old house. Things get especially ugly in Noah’s tiny room.

“Surely some of this can go to the Goodwill. I want you to go through and try everything on,” I said to him,

“Mom!” Whatever. But I know he’s not wearing all that stuff. Maybe I should buy back those groovy infomercial “space bags” I unloaded at some long-ago garage sale. Remember those? Off-season clothes can be stuffed inside and all of the space-hogging air vacuumed out, so the newly liposuctioned packages fit smartly under your bed? Yeah. Weird.

Does anyone actually use those things?

I think I’ll just stick to my tried-andtrue strategy of avoiding the plague of too-much-clean-laundry. If I happen to slip and lose my rhythm, I’ll just bear in mind that, barring all of the tripping and clingy dog-hair, nothing really bad happens when clean laundry simply

piles up.

I had it made, this week, until Tuesday morning. Things were humming along nicely. There were clothes in the closets, in the drawers, in the washer and dryer and on the floors. Everything as it should be, everything in its place. But then I called the plumber.

The only good thing about spending the day waiting for a no-show plumber is that I got my housework done.

Which, you know, means the laundry got done, too.

But as I hung the last of the clean laundry in my tiny closet the rod came tumbling down. The cheesy, plastic rod-supports installed by the previous owners finally cracked under the pressure of too much clean laundry and died. Unlike previous collapses where the clothes slid off into a fiery pit of doom, this time the rod just sort of dropped, remaining parallel with the floor. Oddly, the clothes remain tentatively hung in a fragile state of order fraught with possibility. You know, that no-one’s-allowed-to-touch-them-

until-new-supports-are-installed-or-alltarnation-will-break-loose state.

I typed this column lying on an ice pack (you know, because my back hurt from all of the darned housework). Nor do we have room for all of our dishes to be clean at once, by the way, but I digress.

When I typed Noah’s exasperated “Mom!” I laughed so hard at the memory that I startled the dog. He stayed almost perfectly still. From my vantage point I could see only his red eyelashes twitching with worry, which made me laugh even harder. And then I remembered my laundry crisis.

I asked Facebook for help.

“People hang their laundry?” Mary commented.

My point exactly. I’m blaming the plumber. I wonder if he’ll help me fix my closet when he finally does show?

Enjoy the magnificent blooms of amaryllis After we finish our garden chores and head indoors for the winter, we long for a way to satisfy our green thumbs. Mine scratch their proverbial gardening itch by growing amaryllis that brighten winter days with their magnificent, exotic blooms.

Amaryllis planting, care 1. Start by choosing a topsize bulb. When it comes to bulbs, size really does matter. Smaller amaryllis bulbs may cost less, but the larger the bulb the more flowers are contained within.

2. It is very easy to grow amaryllis. Plant one of these voluptuous bulbs in a pot just slightly larger than the bulb – a couple of inches

3. Gently press the soil down around the bulb so that the shoulders and neck of the bulb are visible.

4. Water it lightly and place the pot in a sunny window and wait. When growth begins, water often enough to keep the soil barely moist.

Six to eight weeks after you plant the bulb, you will be rewarded with huge blooms that explode from one to twofoot stems. For continuous bloom all winter long, plant bulbs at two-week intervals.

5. Once the flowers open, move the pot away from the sunny window into a spot with indirect light to keep blooms from fading.

After-blooming care 1. When the last flower has faded on a stem, cut it near the top of the bulb.

2. When all stems have been cut back, move the container to the sunniest spot available to encourage as much leaf growth as possible.

3. Fertilize once a month and never let the soil dry out completely.

4. After the danger of frost has passed in spring, move your amaryllis outside.

ELGIN – Songwriters Lizz Wright and Raul Midón are joining forces for a night of jazz, R&B, soul and gospel on Oct. 26 at Elgin Community College.

The performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the ECC Arts Center’s Blizzard Theatre, located in Building H on the Spartan Drive Campus, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin.

According to a news release, Wright has been the recipient of critical acclaim since her debut, “Salt,” in 2003.

Wright continues her musical journey with her latest album, “Fellowship,” a nod to her roots in gospel, states the release.

“The funny thing about the transition from only gospel to jazz” says Wright in the release, “is that I felt that jazz had a familiar sacredness to it. In all of my adventures in music, I’ve been drawn in by sparks of the famil-

iar inside of the unfamiliar. For example, when I first heard what people were calling the blues, I was taken aback, because I had heard that sound all my life. That was how the mothers sang in church.”

According to the ECC website, Singer-songwriter and guitarist Raul Midón, who has been blind since birth, has three major label records under his belt – “State of Mind,” “A World Within A World,” and “Synthesis.”

Veteran actor Robert Redford talks about career-defining performance in ‘All Is Lost’

By ANN HORNADAY The Washington Post There are moments while talking with Robert Redford that you can see that 1970s sex symbol peeking through from a weathered 77-yearold face – starting when he rises from a couch in a New York publicist’s office, looking amazingly fit in jeans, white T-shirt and cordovan cowboy boots. Settling in for a brief interview, one’s tempted to lean across the coffee table and tuck back a lock of his thick, only slightly graying hair, just like Barbra Streisand did in “The Way We Were.” This smile is still straight out of “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.” The voice as seductive as it was in “All the President’s Men” or “Three Days of the Condor.”

In case it isn’t obvious, in other words, Redford’s still got it. And anyone needing proof of that will be convinced by his newest movie, a man-against-nature thriller called “All Is Lost” in which he plays a nameless character whose sailboat runs afoul of a shipping container in the Indian Ocean.

The film, written and directed by J.C. Chandor (“Margin Call”) chronicles his week-long attempt to keep his boat afloat and stay alive. And Redford thoroughly dominates the drama, in which he’s the sole star and in which he utters just a few words of dialogue, putting his body through moments of watery peril, hopelessness and existential terror.

For the 106-minute running time of “All Is Lost,” Redford delivers something of a master class in the art

At 77, Robert Redford pulls off his role with almost astonishing physicality in “All is Lost.” of screen acting, using his prime instrument – his body – to deliver a galvanizing, physically grueling, deeply emotional performance that would be electrifying coming from someone half his age. The fact that it’s Redford up there, battling the elements, refusing to go gently, embodying the hopes, fears, desires and recriminations of the generation of which he’s been so emblematic, makes “All Is Lost” not just thrilling, but profound.

On this rainy day in New York, Redford bears not a trace of the stresses he went through making “All Is Lost,” which was filmed in the same Baja, Calif., water tanks as “Titanic.” He’s even getting used to the idea that the movie is a success – a fact that first dawned on him at the Cannes Film Festival, where he saw it for the first time at a gala black-tie premiere.

“I had not seen anything,” he says. “I had not looked at the monitor between takes, I didn’t go to dailies, I took myself out

of that. So, when the lights came down I didn’t know what to expect.”

He was prepared for the worst, he recalls. “And when it went the other way, I just didn’t know what to do with it. I did not know how to behave.”

This is entirely in keeping with Redford’s wary, often ambivalent relationship with success. He’s a man who came to New York in the 1950s to be a painter, and instead found himself drawn – despite his inborn shyness and California-bred contempt for shallow movie culture – to acting. A man who, when stardom began to find him in the 1960s, responded by buying up land in Utah, the better to retreat from it.

The man who, when he saw the studio culture changing in the 1980s, didn’t “lean in,” but built his own nonprofit institute, where he could nurture filmmakers interested in making the small, independent, often subversive films he himself produced whenever the system would let him. This

is the man whose watchwords have always been: At the height of your greatest success, always go back to zero.

“That’s right,” Redford says today. “Be careful of success, it has a dark side.”

In a way, “All Is Lost” is a product of the success of the Sundance Institute and Sundance Film Festival, which Redford spent most of the 1980s and 1990s building and protecting, at the expense of his own acting and directing career.

“Yeah, I got off my stride a bit with my own work,” he admits. “I kind of woke up and said, wait a second, I need to go back to what it is that I do.”

Now he’s restoring the balance. Last spring, he directed and starred in the political thriller “The Company You Keep.” He has revived longstanding plans to direct and star in the adaptation of Bill Bryson’s book “A Walk in the Woods,” and next year he’ll appear in the comic-book action-adventure “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.”

With “All Is Lost,” however, he has tackled something deeper and more challenging on any level, aesthetic or physical.

“Its purity is what attracted me,” he says of Chandor’s script. “It was very bold; I was attracted by that. There’s no dialogue, I was attracted by that. It was not going to have a lot of special effects. Even though we were going to be filming in tanks, it was going to be real rain and wind. It was a very pure experience that I felt had gone missing [in movies]. It was a chance for me to be a part of going back to that.”

While it may not be “in your interest” to have her move with you, it may be extremely difficult for her to adjust to a new living situation at her age. Length of PCL rehab depends on sprain severity Dear Doctor K: I injured my PCL playing football. How long will my recovery take?

Dear Reader: Let’s start with some knee anatomy. The posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) and the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) are two tough bands of fibrous tissue. The ACL is injured more often than the PCL, which is why many people have heard of the ACL but not the PCL. The ACL and PCL connect the thighbone (femur) and the large bone of the lower leg (tibia) at the knee joint. The ACL and PCL form an “X” pattern that stabilizes the knee against front-to-back and back-to-front forces. (I’ve put a detailed illustration of the knee joint on my website, AskDoctorK. com.)

A PCL injury is a sprain – a stretch or tear of the ligament.

PCL sprains are classified as follows.

• Grade I: a mild injury that causes only microscopic tears in the ligament.

• Grade II (moderate): The PCL is partially torn, and the knee periodically gives out when you stand or walk.

• Grade III (severe): The PCL is either completely torn or is separated from the bone that it anchors. The knee is more

People get PCL injuries when their knee is flexed (like when you are seated) and the large bone of the lower leg is hit hard.

For example, a person might be seated in the front seat of a car. If the car is in an accident and the person’s lower leg smashes into the dashboard, that could cause the injury.

Usually, people with a sudden new PCL injury notice less of a problem with the knee than people with a new ACL injury, at least at first.

Treatment of all PCL sprains should begin with RICE: • Rest the joint.

• Ice the injured area to reduce swelling.

• Compress the swelling with an elastic bandage.

• Elevate the injured area.

Your doctor may also recommend a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), such as ibuprofen, to relieve mild pain or swelling.

Further treatment depends on the severity of your injury. If

you have a Grade I or Grade II sprain, your knee may be splinted in a straight-leg position, and you’ll begin an intense rehabilitation program. Rehab gradually strengthens the muscles around the knee, supports the knee joint and helps protect the knee from re-injury.

If you have a Grade III sprain and the PCL has been pulled away from the bone, it may have to be surgically reattached with a screw. If your PCL has torn completely, it can be surgically reconstructed. After surgery, you’ll wear a long-leg knee brace and gradually begin rehabilitation.

Full recovery can take from four months to a year. How long your specific injury lasts will depend on the severity of your PCL injury and your rehabilitation program. Probably the most important things you can do are exercises to strengthen your quadriceps muscles – the muscles in the front of your thigh.

The chances are good you will return to your pre-injury level of function.

The so-called fun they seem to be having is mostly smoke and mirrors – superficial attempts to be accepted and show off a “fake” sophistication and maturity.

I have received thousands of letters over the years from teens who got caught up in the popularity game and experimented naively with drugs, alcohol and sex. Their letters all reveal the same results.

This path led to nothing more than the temporary illusion of happiness.

These young people only found true happiness when they found true love – of themselves, their families, their church, their friends and their Creator.

If she said, “Fetch my slippers,” Poochie would bring her slippers, one at a time. When she said, “Time to eat,” Poochie would head straight for his food bowl and wait patiently until it was filled. The writer wanted to know if she had a special dog that understood human words. I replied that I didn’t think dogs could understand human words but, rather, they reacted to tone of voice and to the action the owner demonstrated when giving the command.

I soon received volumes of mail from readers informing me that their dogs could understand and respond to them. I still didn’t really believe that dogs could actually understand and respond to human words. Boy, was I wrong!

According to researchers, apes and dolphins are best at learning to understand words. Now dogs can be added to this intelligent group. A scientific study has demonstrated that dogs really understand much of what they hear.

Researchers in Germany tested a collie that understood over 200 words and was learning new ones quickly. The collie knew the names of play toys and could find the one called for by the owners.

I must apologize to every dog in the land for underestimating their brain power!
