BARRINGTON – Two groups of Barrington-area residents are about to take a leap of faith for something they believe in.

Ian Fournie, a Barrington High School freshman, has decided to host the first-ever Shady Hill Homeowners Association 5K Chili Dump Run on Sunday, Oct. 13, at the Shady Hill Marina in Lake Barrington.

Fournie is a cross-country runner who came up with the idea for hosting his own race after his friend, 16-year-old Alex Bronton, moved to Misericordia – a home in Chicago for people with developmental and physical disabilities.

Bronton has cerebral palsy, and the race’s proceeds will benefit the Misericordia complex.

I admit that I was a little puzzled by the name of this race at first. “Chili what?” I thought. But now I know why this Chili Dump is a coveted Shady Hill Homeowners Association tradition.

What are your hours like? When are you most busy?

Our hours are by appointment. Weekends are so wonderfully busy. We love the energy of the brides and all of their guests when the shop is buzzing. We have so much fun at Wedding Belles, and more often than not we find “the gown.” Saturdays book up quickly, so it’s advisable to make weekend appointments well in advance.

This new juicery will offer juices, health workshops, baked goods, smoothies, salads, wraps and cleansing programs – all organic, of course.

The Chylstek family already has received positive feedback from passersby during the juicery’s construction process. They held a small juice tasting on Sept. 26 to get acquainted with downtown foot traffickers who were eager to stop in and learn what juicing is all about.

“Juices appeal to everyone of every age, and that’s why we jumped on this downtown location,” Dave Chlystek said.

I’ve been following Pure Organic Juicery through its construction process and look forward to frequenting the restaurant, as well as meeting some fellow health enthusiasts in the process.

Mary Bronton of Barrington will never forget the day her son Alex Bronton’s bus driver told her to make sure to check his backpack for a note. So, when the two got home, Bronton checked her eighth grader’s bag and found a note from sixth grader Ian Fournie.

The note, addressed to Mrs. Bronton, asked if it would be possible for Alex and Ian to talk online via Skype sometime.

Bronton admitted to being a little confused, as she didn’t even know what Skype was, and didn’t exactly get back to Fournie in a timely manner.

He followed up a week later, offering to help Bronton set up Skype if she was unsure how.

When Fournie found out Bronton’s computer didn’t have camera capabilities, he bought Alex a webcam for his birthday and helped set it up. From then on, the two had a regularly scheduled time to Skype.

“When I finally got to meet him face-to-face, I thought, ‘this kid is going places,’” Bronton said.

Fournie is now a 14-yearold freshman at Barrington High School, and Alex, who has cerebral palsy and is confined to a wheelchair, is a 16-year-old resident of Misericordia, a home in Chicago for more than 600 children and adults with developmental and physical disabilities.

Despite their distance, the two stay in touch, talking on the phone and using FaceTime.

Fournie even visited Alex during Family Fest at Misericordia.

Ian “has made it a point to always find time to see Alex, and when Alex got into Misericordia, he was curious what that was about,” Mary Bronton said.

By serving society’s most vulnerable citizens, Misericordia also serves the fam-

ilies who want the best for them, yet cannot provide it at home.

Fournie, a cross country runner who has participated in several 5K races, began talking with his parents about hosting a 5K over the summer.

“One day after I ran a 5K, I was like, ‘It would be funny if we held a 5K,’ ” Fournie said. “It started as a joke.”

But the idea didn’t go away.

Before he knew it, Fournie and his parents were planning the Shady Hill Homeowners Association 5K Chili Dump Run to benefit Misericordia, where Alex has resided since August 2012.

“I know most 5Ks do benefit a charity,” Fournie said. “I liked this idea the best because I have a personal connection to Alex.

I don’t see many things for Misericordia ... I really want to help Alex. He’s one of my friends.”

The Shady Hill Homeowners Association 5K Chili Dump run will be held on Sunday.

The race will begin and end at the Shady Hill Marina, with the course itself winding through the streets of the Shady Hill and Barrington Harbor neighborhoods.

Registration begins at 8 a.m. Sunday, with the race slated to start at 9 a.m.

Participants and spectators also are invited to bring a pot of chili to participate in the Chili Dump around noon.

All pots of chili will be dumped together into a much larger pot to blend the flavors and create a whole new batch of chili. Silent and live auctions will also be held at

that time.

Registration for the race is $25 for adults and $15 for children 12 years old and younger.

“I guess I want people to understand [Misericordia] is a great place and it helps a lot of people with disabilities,” Fournie said.

Bronton said Misericordia is just a wonderful place where her son is thriving.

She couldn’t be more impressed with all of Fournie’s efforts.

“I was just elated,” she said. “Ian is just such a wonderful kid.... He just has a heart that’s huge. This kid is a God-send. He is going to do great things.”

Author makes hometown appearance 2006 BHS grad, Veronica Roth, visits teachers, lends advice to students

By TARAH THORNE tthorne@shawmedia.com BARRINGTON – The Barrington community is gushing over its newly famous native daughter, Veronica Roth, and the 25-year-old author isn’t shy about sharing her secrets to success.

In an Alumni Legends event hosted by the Barrington 220 Educational Foundation, Roth, a 2006 Barrington High School graduate, visited District 220 schools for her own homecoming on Thursday, Oct. 3, and Friday, Oct. 4. The author shared her story with students and community members in a fourstop series with an assembly at Prairie Middle School, creative writing workshops in the Black Box Theater of BHS, a public program in the BHS auditorium, and an assembly at Station Middle School.

Sydney Bakal, an eighth grade student at Prairie Middle School, said she is about three-quarters done with reading Roth’s second book and “absolutely adored the first.” Bakal was part of the lucky group of middle school students who was able to listen to Roth speak at their school assemblies and purchase a ticket to the teacher-run, public interview in the BHS auditorium Thursday evening.

“Veronica spoke about failure,” Bakal said. “It was really touching and helpful. Being a writer myself, it taught me that feedback and criticism can be helpful.”

After publishing two New York Times best-selling novels with HarperCollins – “Divergent” in May 2011 and “Insurgent” in 2012 – Roth sold the film rights to Summit Entertainment for its Chicago-filmed movie adaption of “Divergent,” directed by Neil Burger. The movie is set to premiere in March 2014 and Roth’s final book of the threepart series, “Allegiant,” is set to be released on Oct. 22.

Roth was 21 years old, a senior at Northwestern University, when she published her first futuristic science fiction novel, attributing her inspiration to studying human psychology and her own fascination with personality tests.

She lives in Chicago and has already sold the film rights to “Insurgent to Summit Entertainment.

Explaining her rocky road to success, Roth said that she had only web-searched the book publishing process when she was writing her first book.

Upon finishing, Roth sent a summary of her “Divergent” manuscript out to 35 literary agents and only one (her current agent) responded.

“It’s been hard to know when to open myself up to the

opinions of others and when to shut the door,” Roth said.

“I try not to think too much or read nasty feedback on the Internet, but sometimes criticism is helpful and I become a better writer.”

Roth said she writes best when walking very slowly, typing on the treadmill. She jokingly called herself a “Potterhead,” admitting that she just finished reading the seventh Harry Potter book.

“It’s been a grieving process now that I’ve concluded my book series,” Roth said.

“I’ve been writing a few short stories to be sold in February and would love to continue writing for teens – I don’t

The BHS auditorium audience broke into a roaring applause after viewing the “Divergent” movie trailer together. Since this movie was filmed entirely in Chicago, Roth said she was often invited to the set and was impressed by the crew’s “tremendous respect for the source material.”

Roth said moviegoers can expect a lot of action and detail from the upcoming movie, just like her book.

“I have a lot of fun with action,” Roth said. “I always think, ‘How can I make this as terrifying sounding as possible?”

Station Middle School seventh-graders Claire Buckley and Elizabeth Leese said Roth’s books are a quick read, easy to understand, and hard to put down.

Claire said she wants to know if Roth based any of her book’s characters off anyone she personally knew and why. Claire’s mother, Melissa Buckley, said Roth’s books are unique because they include two strong characters of both genders.

“Plus, it’s fun to discuss the books with my kids,” Melissa Buckley said.

Although it was getting late on a school night, many

elementary students came out to hear Roth speak with their families. Finn Haney, a fifth-grader at Hough Street Elementary, said the “Allegient” debut is one day after his birthday on Oct. 21, and there’s only one thing that he’s asked for – a copy of Roth’s new book.

Roth’s appearance was limited to interviews by her former teachers – Becky GillSchulz, Roth’s fourth- and fifth-grade extended program instructor, and June Kramer, her high school English teacher. The evening ran too late for public comment, but Page Foundry, Inc., a Barrington-based content software development company, made a generous donation so Barrington students could be downloaded Roth’s ebooks for free for a limited time.

The Barrington 220 Educational Foundation has donated more than $1.9 million toward student learning since 2009.

Katherine Logue, an Educational Foundation trustee, said Roth was gracious to donate her time to the Barrington community, and the foundation would like to continue hosting an annual Alumni Legends appearance.

“The program is all about inspiring students and proceeds go entirely toward the Foundation’s efforts,” Logue said.

More than $18M raised for expansion Donations given for $247 million project for Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital

By JIM DALLKE jdallke@shawmedia.com BARRINGTON – Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital has raised more than $18 million from donors to pay for a $247 million expansion and modernization project.

Capital campaign coChairs Paul and Barbara Hills said donors began giving during the hospital’s silent donation phase, which began in May. A posh groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday evening at the hospital campus in Barrington marked the beginning of the open community campaign, which they hope will bring an additional $7 million by the time the hos-

pital project is completed in 2017.

Advocate Health, which is funding the rest of the project, told the campaign committee that it was looking for $20 to $30 million from community benefactors, Paul Hills said.

“Our committee worked with a consulting company to see how we could not only reach the low number but perhaps get to the high number,” Paul Hills said. “And our goal of $25 million, I think we can do it.”

Hospital President Karen Lambert said the $18 million raised so far exceeded her expectations.

“We did not expect to be here,” Lambert said. “It al-

lowed us to move out of the silent campaign to the community campaign … Early on when this project was announced some of our friends stepped forward in a big way.”

Some of the early donors honored at Wednesday included Barney and Jamie Baxter, Scott Brown, Paul Hanifl, Kim Duchossois, Pat Foglia, Jim Lancaster, Jill Meyer, Wayne Kocourek, Frank Morgan, and Paul and Barbara Hills.

The modernization project is the hospital’s biggest renovation in its 34-year history.

It will include building private patient rooms and eight new operating rooms with increased capacity and state-ofthe-art technology. The hos-

pital’s existing facilities don’t have enough space for some modern equipment, officials have said.

“Technology is growing at an incredible rate – exponentially – and unfortunately our operating rooms are a little bit on the smaller side, and we’re having a hard time fitting all this equipment,” said Dr. Thomas Meyer, president of Advocate Good Shepherd’s medical staff. “With our new [operating rooms] we should have happy surgeons, and happy nurses if there’s happy surgeons.”

In December, demolition will begin to prepare for the construction of the new buildings. In January, the hospital

will start construction of the south building, which will include the main lobby, conference center, breast center and rehab center. Work also will begin on the north building, which will house the inpatient, medical, surgical and intensive care units; new operating rooms; cardiac catheterization labs; and interventional radiology rooms.

Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital is a 169-bed acute care hospital with more than 700 physicians. It is part of Advocate Health Care, the state’s largest health system.

DAWN KAPKA ST. ANNE PARISH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL This is Dawn Kapka’s third year as principal of St. Anne Parish School.

Kapka talked with Barrington Life reporter Tarah Thorne about all the exciting aspects of her job, previous work experience, and plans for the school’s future.

What is most rewarding about your job? How about most challenging?

Over the span of 11 school years, preschool through eighth grade, it is such a wonderful joy to journey with the children and watch them grow and develop into fine young men and women. I find these formative years so critical in child development, and it is a gift to work with children across these grade levels. It also is exhilarating to switch gears in a moment from servicing the needs of children from preschool to middle school and every grade in between! I hope that my work here at St. Anne’s enhances the experience of every child and family currently enrolled at our school.

My greatest challenge is finding the time to spend in the classrooms because of the continuous administrative duties that must be addressed on a daily basis. It is a constant balancing act.

Where did you work prior to St. Anne’s?

I worked as an administrator at St. Raymond School in Mount Prospect for 10 years prior to accepting this position. I am grateful for that opportunity, because it shaped me into the principal that I am today. I also brought prior knowledge and experiences that have helped me in my current role.

What do most people not know about St. Anne’s?

I am not sure if people are aware of the warmth and welcoming way of my faculty and staff at St. Anne Parish School. You can truly “feel” it

when you walk in our doors.

The positive school climate is apparent. The parents and faculty are true partners in our effort to serve the children. The amount of parental participation is at a level that I have never witnessed before. In addition, I believe that most people do not realize that we draw families to our school from 25 different ZIP codes!

What do you like to do outside of work? How do you spend your time off?

I am a mother of three adult children. My husband and I enjoy spending time with them partaking in their activities. I value the slightly slower pace of the summer to catch up on other activities that I enjoy such as traveling, reading and spending time with friends and extended family.

What do you like most about the Barrington area?

I love the fact that our school is right in the middle of town and we are able to open our doors and extend learning into the community.

We offer field trips provided by the professionals who are working to make Barrington such a wonderful place. Some of them include a local yoga studio, the farmers market, the one-room schoolhouse, and the fire and police station.

In addition, as a parish school, we receive countless blessings from the parish including the ongoing support, commitment and cooperation of the church staff, as well as the financial support of our larger parish community.

What is new and exciting with the school and your job this year?

This year, our school theme is focused on growing servant student leaders. We are working to empower our students to recognize their God-given gifts and use them to serve this community and beyond. I am delighted with the direction that our Student Leadership Commission is taking in the area of stewardship and service. The partnership between the parish Human Concerns Commission and the SLC is growing in beautiful ways. Our children are truly making a difference in the lives of others.

We also are excited about the Mandarin Chinese instruction that will be offered during the school day for our

preschool through secondgrade students. This experience will help to broaden their exposure to world languages and enhance their instruction. This is in addition to the Spanish instruction that continues to be offered across all grade levels.

In addition, the Catholic Christian faith-based tradition in which we are rooted is drawing interest and appeal from people of all faith traditions! We are moving forward with a school population that is growing in diversity.

What is a typical weekday like for you? Do you spend a lot of time with students?

There are never two days alike! I come to school every day with my plans for the day, only to find that something else will undoubtedly take precedence. The needs

of a child, parent or teacher may require me to rearrange my day, but I am OK with that. It comes with the profession, as flexibility and adaptability is required!

What do you do within the community?

With every passing year, I am learning more and more about this wonderful, vibrant community. I have taken the opportunity to get to know many of the stakeholders in this area, and look to continue to build relationships within the village, school district and Barrington community.

What are your plans for the future?

I plan to continue to build upon an already strong foundation and legacy here at St. Anne Parish School.

I am continuously working with my teachers to evaluate our offerings for our 21st-century learners in an effort to improve upon the high level of excellence in curriculum, instruction and technology. I am proud of our graduates of St. Anne’s as they move forward and reach great heights in high school and beyond.

By TARAH THORNE tthorne@shawmedia.com BARRINGTON – Mary and Dave Chlystek of North Barrington are on a mission to start a local business with a blender full of health and a side of convenience.

Mary Chlystek first became aware of juicing about a year ago. Living with an autoimmune disease, she was impressed with the amount of research she found praising fresh-pressed fruit and vegetable juice for health and wellness benefits, but she didn’t know where to start.

“There was nothing around here,” Dave Chlystek said. “We would have to order juice online and spend crazy bucks for special delivery.

Barrington needed juice.”

The couple has spent the past year visiting juicery-abundant places like San Francisco and New York to gain insight on the business.

Mary Chlystek has been juicing at home – something she called a messy, time-extensive process – and consulting wellness coaches, chefs and nutritionists for recipes and trusted techniques.

The Chlysteks are set to open shop on Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 100 Station St. in downtown Barrington. The store will offer juices, baked goods, smoothies, salads, wraps and cleansing programs.

Dave Chlystek has set his sights on a marketing segment for corporate occasions, offering to deliver to local businesses.

Plus, the juicery collaborated with Juice Rx, a Chicago-based juice and cleanse distributor to sell the distributor’s already-bottled cleanses in chilled, six-pack cases – minus the expensive shipping fees.

As far as “fast food” goes, Pure Organic orders can be placed ahead of time for pickup and pre-made entrees, and juices will be made for “grab and go” customers.

“I told her to let her passion shine through to raise public awareness of the health benefits of juice,” said Pohlman, who has personally had customers praise her about their increased energy levels and weight loss. “It’s almost like people’s taste buds change and they start to crave

real food.”

According to a Juice & Smoothie Bars Market Research Report, published by IBISWorld in February 2012, the $2 billion industry declined by 0.4 percent between 2007 and 2012, attributed to a drop in national disposable income and escalating competition from fast-food chains and frozen yogurt shops. It noted that many fast-food franchises have added smoothies and juices to their menus, displacing small juice and smoothie bars.

The Chlystek’s plan to break this trend is due to the value of their raw ingredients. Customers can opt to add a “superfood” mixed into their drink, such as chia seeds, macha, flaxseed oil, wheatgrass or hemp protein – all organic.

Mary Chlystek said Pure Organic’s goal is to serve all vegetarian, non-genetically modified, organic, gluten and dairy-free food, making sure that nothing goes to waste.

The Chlysteks plan to offer smaller, child-marketed drinks like an “Incredible Hulk” juice or “Strawberry Shortcake,” but they are set on maintaining their menu’s integrity and said they will

not alter their formulas with sugar and additives to appeal to children.

The juice bar also will offer indoor/outdoor seating, a Polaroid photo opportunity for first-time wheatgrass shot drinkers and will have a dogs-welcome policy. The Chlysteks have been shocked by the positive feedback they’ve already received regarding their new business.

“Everyone has told us they can’t wait until we open,” said Mary Chlystek, who hopes to distribute juice samples at upcoming Barrington farmers markets and wine walks.

“We would really like to help Mary kick off her new business and schedule a ribbon cutting once she has a chance to be open for a while,” said Eric Zitron, vice president of business development for the Barrington Area Chamber of Commerce.

Broncos fans turn out for annual homecoming parade

T

he 2013 Barrington Homecoming Parade drew Broncos fans of all ages over the weekend.

A longtime village tradition, the parade began at 10 a.m., traveling west from the Village Center to Barrington High School along Main Street.

Candy filled the streets as marching bands, cheerleaders, pompom squads, various floats and returning alumni entertained the crowds.

This year’s theme was “Under the Sea: The Great Barrington Reef,” and the parade was packed with nautical decor. The Barrington High School Alumni Association excitedly arranged a pre-parade pancake breakfast, school tour and post-parade tailgate party – all while celebrating the reunions of seven different classes ranging from 1998 to 1963.

To cap off homecoming weekend, the Broncos football team improved its record to 5-1 on the season after defeating Fremd, 35-21.

BCFPD offers tips to prevent kitchen fires

By TARAH THORNE tthorne@shawmedia.com LAKE BARRINGTON – The Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District has partnered with the National Fire Protection Association to highlight the dangers of cooking-related fires during this year’s National Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 6 to Oct. 12. It is encouraging residents to “stand by their plan.”

“Statistics show that one in eight homes will experience a cooking fire each year, and the majority of those fires will be caused by food left unattended while cooking,” BCFPD Fire Chief/Administrator Jeff Swanson said.

The BCFPD and NFPA recommend remaining in the kitchen when frying, grilling, broiling or boiling food, turning off the stove when leaving the kitchen, using a timer and checking on food regularly, keeping children and pets at least 3 feet away from the stove, and moving anything that can catch fire away from the stovetop.

Additionally, residents should also make sure they have working smoke detectors on each level of their home – testing each detector monthly and replacing batteries twice each year.

Presbyterian Church welcomes new pastor BARRINGTON HILLS – After a nationwide search, the Presbyterian Church of Barrington has found its new pastor, Rev. Joseph Dorociak from Trinity Presbyterian Church in Boise, Idaho.

Pastor Joe, as he prefers to be called, will lead the 600-member Barrington church with the help of associate pastor Rev. Kate Kelly. Dorociak and the church will work together on mission projects, developing its ministry in the greater Barrington area.

Wounded veteran shares story About $40,000 raised at 3rd annual Barrington Honor Ride & Run Liz Luby Chepell Jones

BARRINGTON – About 250 runners and riders participated in Sunday’s third annual Honor Ride and Run through the streets of Barrington, raising an estimated $40,000 to support life-changing cycling programs that help our country’s wounded veterans continue in their recovery process.

Funds raised support Ride 2 Recovery, a nonprofit organization that equips wounded veterans with bikes customized to accommodate their injuries, offers training and hosts rides for physical and mental benefits that can impact their lives forever.

Participants in Sunday’s event chose between a 5K or 10K run or a 29.5-mile bike ride through Barrington.

The race started with a brief ceremony at the Veterans Memorial downtown, where participants paused for a few words from Ride 2 Recovery Chief Operating Officer and retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. David Haines.

Lt. Col. Haines was in town for the race from his home in Elizabethtown, Ky. He put the whole mission into new perspective when he shared more about his own personal recovery after he and four fellow soldiers were hit by a roadside bomb while serving our country.

“In 2006, I was assigned to an infantry unit in Baghdad, Iraq, and was hurt by a roadside bomb,” he said. “I was on a mounted patrol in an up-armored Humvee and was

hit on one of the main routes in Baghdad.

“There were five people including myself on this vehicle. One person was killed and all of the three other men who survived lost limbs, so it was a very serious incident and I was fortunate enough that, though my injuries were very serious, I managed to keep all of my limbs.”

Lt. Col. Haines continued: “But I was evacuated through the system and spent about four months as a patient at Walter Reed [National Military Medical Center], and then about twoand-a-half-years rehabilitating after that. I had shattered my right hand, shrapnel damage to my left arm, and shattered my right femur, so for my life and for my military career, that was kind of a defining point.”

Lt. Col. Haines said that, for him, cycling has played a major role in his personal rehabilitation goals, allowing him to stay involved with the military and connect others with the cause.

He also shared that participating in Ride 2 Recovery events allows him time to quietly honor those who lost their lives serving their country.

Just a few minutes into our meeting, I could sense a shift in his voice when he revealed that 20 more men in his unit also lost their lives during his tour in Iraq.

“Some of them I was very close to,” he said. “These rides kind of afford me the opportunity to reflect on their service and their sacrifice, and to make sure that I don’t take anything for granted in my life.”

He also expressed thanks to those who came out to ride, run and support the

“The fact that they’re willing to show up is the most meaningful thing. You don’t necessarily need to give us anything to show your appreciation, you just need to turn out, say thanks and participate. It means a lot.”

The race ended at the south Metra parking lot beneath a giant American flag, which was raised on a crane

for the occasion. About a dozen veterans from the local chapter of Rolling Thunder dropped by the event on their motorcycles to also pay tribute to our wounded soldiers and express their commitment to bringing home veterans still missing from all wars.

Broncos to host conference rival Conant 5-1 BHS to play second home game in a row for first time this season

By DAN VASKO Barrington Life contributor BARRINGTON – The Barrington Broncos (5-1) will get to host consecutive games for the first time this season as they prepare to battle rival Conant.

Barrington is coming off of a big conference victory after defeating Fremd at home this past Saturday.

Fremd brought an arsenal of running backs early and broke out to a 14-point lead in the first quarter. But the Broncos will have to focus on both the pass and run this week as Conant quarterback Bill Modelski has been lighting up scoreboards. Modelski’s success comes largely from the run game. Running back Elias Gardner has put up big numbers on the ground, keeping opposing defenses honest.

Last week, the Broncos had a more balanced attack. Quarterback Daniel Kubiuk executed the read-option well, and was able to see some success of his own in the run game. Kubiuk provided two scores on the ground with runs of 21 and 34 yards.

said he is confident that his quarterback will continue to read defenses well and find success on the ground in the weeks to come.

“He knows what he needs to do,” Sanchez said. “Him becoming more of a run threat helps keep teams honest.”

Kubiuk has been one of many Broncos to run the football this year, with Dylan Abel finding the most success last week. Barrington hasn’t committed to one back yet this season, but the coaching staff remains dedicated to their running back by committee approach.

“We’re gonna need them all,” Sanchez said. “I don’t know that we have one guy that can tote the rock against any kind of defense for 35-40 times …

You gotta have multiple guys that can do it, plus you give them a change of pace.”

Abel and fellow running backs Dumaso Mkwananzi and Nate King are expected to see a significant workload in practice this week. Barrington will look to establish the run early and build a lead early on, something the team has struggled to do in recent weeks. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Barrington.

Broncos’ offense lights up Fremd The Barrington Broncos (51) are now in second place in the Mid-Suburban West Conference after defeating rival Fremd (4-2), 35-21, on Saturday. This was a big win for Barrington, which bounced back after a tough loss against firstplace Schaumburg.

The Broncos offense had a slow start and watched the Vikings rack up 14 unanswered points going into the second quarter. But as the Broncos have shown before, they don’t quit. Barrington responded with a long drive, ending in a 33-yard touchdown pass from Daniel Kubiuk to Dylan Bingham.

The next two drives would be just as rewarding, with Dylan Abel rushing for touchdowns of 23 and 65 yards. By halftime, the Broncos had stolen the momentum.

“I’m proud of the fact that they stayed firm and they didn’t allow what happened last week,” head

coach Joe Sanchez said. “Instead of caving in, we stayed strong, and that’s a credit to our coaches and players.”

At the start of the third quarter, Kubiuk found Matt Moran for a 40-yard gain, followed by three consecutive completions. Three plays later, Kubiuk found the end zone himself, running for a 21-yard score. On the next drive, the senior quarterback scored his second rushing touchdown of the game with a 34-yard run up the middle.

The Broncos had a 35-14 lead with less than 10 minutes left in the game.

The balanced attack is something the Broncos have been working on.

“That was one of the things we worked on this week,” Kubiuk said. “I got really used to it during practice and it showed in the game.”

Bears should win, but can’t take Giants lightly Hub Arkush

Anyone who thinks the 0-5 New York Giants can’t come into Soldier Field Thursday night and knock off the 3-2 Bears knows absolutely nothing about football.

There are more than 20 players on this Giants team with Super Bowl rings they won together just two seasons ago, and a handful of them have won a pair of rings together.

One of those two-time world champions is the quarterback, Eli Manning, who also is a two-time Super Bowl MVP. That’s one more of each than his more famous older brother, Peyton.

With a supporting cast that includes All Pros Victor Cruz, Chris Snee, Justin Tuck, Jason Pierre-Paul, Antrel Rolle and a number of other near Pro Bowlers, Manning and com-

pany can beat anybody on any day if they show up and play their game.

The good news for Bears fans is the Giants haven’t shown up yet this year, and nothing’s happened in the past few weeks to suggest they will for the Bears.

A huge part of the Giants problems this year is Manning is having his worst year as a pro, completing just 53.7 percent of his passes. He’s also thrown 12 interceptions versus just eight touchdowns. Much of that is due to the fact that Manning’s been dodging bullets all season long. He already has been sacked 15 times.

Another huge problem for Manning and the Giants has been the almost complete lack of a running game. The Giants rank 32nd, dead last in the league, on the ground. Their No. 1 back, David Wilson, who has just 146 rushing yards on 44 carries for a 3.3 average and one touchdown on the season, left Sunday’s Eagles game with a neck injury and is unlikely to be available.

If Wilson can’t go, the running game will be in the hands of veteran Brandon Jacobs, who was on the street just a couple of weeks ago.

One area where the Giants can hurt the Bears, and where the Bears have been vulnerable, is with an extremely talented stable of receivers.

Cruz and Hakeem Nicks are both No. 1 receivers, and Reuben Randle was drafted by the Giants last year out of LSU in the second round a little more than a dozen spots after the Bears tabbed Alshon Jeffery.

Brandon Myers is the tight end the Giants wanted more than Martellus Bennett, signing him as a free agent from the Raiders and allowing Bennett to move on. Like Wilson though, Myers is battling injury, a bum ankle, and may or may not be available.

The Giants offensive line has been awful this year. With the Bears struggling on the defensive line, this could be the key matchup of the game.

Defensively, the Giants are as talented as any team in the league

but have struggled all season long to produce.

Tuck, Pierre-Paul and Mathias Kiwanuka form as feared a pass rush trio as you’ll find in the league, but they’re dead last in sacks.

The Giants were struggling so badly at linebacker with Spencer Paysinger and Keith Rivers outside and Mark Herzlich in the middle that they just traded for Jon Beason.

Cornerbacks Corey Webster and Prince Amukamara, and safety Rolle were playing in the Super Bowl 18 months ago, and this year are joined by safety Ryan Mundy.

If Wilson is unable to go, the Giants also will be without their kickoff returner. Randle has been mediocre at best returning punts with a 6.3 average.

Unless the Giants make a miraculous turnaround, this is a game the Bears should win. But take them lightly and wake the sleeping giants, and this team has more than enough talent to really ruin your night.

By J.C. TALON Fantasy Football writer Five weeks into the season, injuries are beginning to mount. If you play in a 12-team league or larger, an injury to your starting quarterback can greatly diminish your shot at a title. If you have an unreliable backup, your season might be over.

The injury bug already has bitten some quarterbacks: Michael Vick and Jake Locker are temporarily sidelined and Brian Hoyer is out for the season. Matt Schaub and Christian Ponder are in danger of losing their starting jobs. Expect more drama as the season unfolds.

Although your waiver wire probably has been picked clean of all running backs with a pulse, there still may be some good quarterbacks available. If you want to contend for a fantasy

championship, you’d be wise to have a back-up plan at QB. Fantasy footballs top 12 starting quarterbacks and possible backup strategies: 1. Peyton Manning (31.8 ppg): Manning has been incredibly durable, so if your No. 2 quarterback is someone like Tony Romo, you should be looking to trade him for a solid position player. The perfect backup for Manning is Terrelle Pryor. The Broncos’ bye is week 9 when the Raiders play the Eagles.

2. Drew Brees (23.8): Pair Brees with Ryan Tannenhill of Miami. He faces Buffalo during the Saints bye week (seven).

3. Aaron Rodgers (22.3): The Packers already had their bye and Rodgers has a very limited injury history.

Consequently, you might be tempted to pair Rodgers with the Packers’ second stringer, Seneca Wallace. The problem

with that strategy occurs if Rodgers suffers a minor injury and the starter becomes unclear in a given week.

You’d be better off securing a backup with some upside, such as Pryor or Geno Smith.

4. Tony Romo (22.2): Moving Romo to No. 4 is probably an overreaction to his performance against Denver.

No matter which quarterback you put in this slot, there is a big falloff from Rodgers.

If you don’t have one of the top three guys, your backup quarterback needs to be a more viable option. The perfect complement to Romo is

Alex Smith. He faces Denver during Romo’s bye week.

5. Matt Ryan (20.4): Something is not right with Atlanta, but Ryan’s fantasy numbers have been consistent. The Falcons are off this week. Consider Andy Dalton for your No. 2 (at Buffalo).

6. Andrew Luck (18.6): We stand corrected about the Colts and Luck. They’ve beaten Seattle and San Francisco, and they are for real.

The Colts are off during week eight when Pittsburgh travels to Oakland. Consider Pryor or Roethlisberger.

7. Matthew Stafford (19): Because Stafford has an injury history, you will need a solid backup. Avoid Eli Manning and Colin Kaepernick due to a common bye week (9).

8. Tom Brady (14): Although his current points per game don’t warrant a roster spot, we feel there will be improved production. Have

9. Phillip Rivers (22.4) He is the third-leading scorer among QBs, but many fantasy owners still have their doubts.

The recommendation would be to believe the trends and make him your starter. Pair him with Eli or Geno Smith.

10. Robert Griffin III (18): Griffin is susceptible to injury, so be sure to pair with someone like Can Newton, Alex Smith or Russell Wilson.

11. Cam Newton (13.6): It’s been a weird year for Newton: one great week and four stinkers. Might be a good “buy-low” option.

12. Michael Vick (24.2 in 4.25 games)/Nick Foles (26.7 in .75 games): One of these guys will score some points, but we get the funny feeling that the starter is going to be a weekly guessing game, at least for a while. Wilson, Smith or Joe Flacco are options.

Douglas Automotive opens in Barrington BARRINGTON – After several months of painting and decorating, Douglas Automotive is now open for business at its new 6,000-square-foot location, 417 W. Main St., Barrington. The space was previously occupied by Reber Automotive.

Area man injured in crash SOUTH BARRINGTON – A Lake in the Hills man was hospitalized Sunday after his car collided nearly head-on with another vehicle Saturday in South Barrington.

The crash happened

around 1:50 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of Algonquin and Palatine roads, South Barrington police said. Police were trying to determine the status of the traffic signal at the time of the collision.
