‘Nature playground’ comes to life Geneva’s Hawks Hollow opportunity for kids to get wet, dirty and creative

By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com GENEVA – As Sheavoun Lambillotte dedicated the latest addition to the Geneva park system, she recalled her childhood, as well as those of many others in her generation.

Children in her demographic, she remembered, would start their days outside, returning home only to “stuff a little food into our mouths,” or to “get a jar to catch fireflies.”

With that in mind, Lambillotte, executive director of the Geneva Park District, said she hoped the new Hawks Hollow Nature Playground will help today’s children rediscover some of those simple pleasures and reconnect with the childhood instinct to just “come out and play.”

“This gives kids the opportunity to do what they used to do,” she said, noting the park district hopes the new playground will have kids “getting wet, getting dirty and getting creative.”

“I apologize in advance for the extra laundry you’re going to have to do,” Lambillotte said.

On Saturday morning, Lambillotte and about 100 others, including dozens of children, gathered at Peck Farm Park South, near the intersection of Peck Road and Kaneville Road, for a ceremony to officially open the Hawks Hollow playground to the public.

The new playground includes some traditional playground equipment, including rope ladders and a slide off of a tall clubhouse-like deck, accessible by a long ramp.

But the playground also includes more natural-feeling elements. Children can walk and splash in an artificial landscaped stream, or use their hands to paint on a wall using mud.

And they can use sticks to rearrange or build up oversized birds’ or muskrats’ nests.

“There’s nothing like this around in this area,” Lambillotte said.

She said the addition of the playground will make Peck Farm Park “an all-day destination” for families.

The playground, which has been years in development, cost $650,000. Half of that was covered by a state grant.

Lambillotte said $100,000 of the remaining cost will be covered by a fundraising ef-

fort underway through the Geneva Park District Foundation.

To date, $80,000 has been raised.

She said the foundation intends to raise an additional $100,000 next year by selling the opportunity for community members to have their names engraved on brick pavers at the playground.

In all, Lambillotte said the park district expects to spend about $125,000 of general taxpayer money on the project, which she said is equivalent to what the district would spend on a mid-sized traditional playground.

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ELBURN – Vintage and classic cars and trucks Sunday filled the grounds at Lions Park in Elburn, eye-popping never-ending rows of crayon-pretty hues.

Among the cars in the Elburn Lions Club’s annual All Wheels Car Show were a 1979 burgundy Camaro, a 1976 sky blue Cadillac Eldorado and a 1966 Ford Mustang in pale ice blue.

Vehicles encompassed the decades in shades of yellow from neon to lemon and butter, greens ranging from olive to forest to billiard ball brilliant and reds so bright they would make an apple blush; as well as a variety of creams, pinks, tans and blacks.

And then there was James Brown’s “chick magnet” Laser Electric Blue 1970 Chevy C-10 custom truck, which won in its class in last year’s show.

“Oh, it’s real pretty,” said Brown, of Crest Hill. “I did most of it myself.”

This was the first trip to the Elburn show for Larry Eslick of Woodstock and he was enjoying himself. Eslick also entered a car in the show, a 1968 silver Camaro.

“A friend of mine was coming down today and asked if I’d like to ride along,” Eslick said.

“I took it all apart and rebuilt it the way I wanted it.”

Steve Laloggia of Huntley was eyeing a 1950 cream Mercury, pointing out flaws a less eagle-eyed gearhead might miss: miniscule cracks in the paint and a small area of rust.

Jim Laloggia of Carol Stream said he’s been working on that car for 13 of the 14 years he’s owned it.

“When I got it, the hood was smashed, the fender was smashed,” Laloggia said. “It had to be all repainted. So everything was stripped to bare metal and plated.”

SUGAR GROVE – No one was injured in a small house fire in Sugar Grove Sunday, officials said.

Lt. Brendan Moran said an outside fire ignited an attic at a one-story house at 224 Yolane Street about 5:30 p.m. Homeowners called it in, he said.

Firefighters put out the fire in about 15 minutes. No injuries to any homeowners or firefighters were reported.

The cause of the fire in the attic is under investigation, Moran said. No damage estimate was available.

Property records show the homeowners are William and Margaret King. Someone answering the phone at the house said they were busy and could not comment.

Batavia shakes off slow start, Larkin

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com ELGIN – Through the ups and downs of a frustrating first half for the Batavia football team, two promising signs remained intact – Larkin couldn’t stop Anthony Scaccia, and the Bulldogs’ pass rush overwhelmed Larkin’s offensive line.

Both factors remained constants, enabling the Bulldogs to wrest full control of the game, defeating the Royals, 46-14, on Saturday at Memorial Field.

Batavia (5-1, 3-0 Upstate Eight Conference River) scored 39 unanswered points after facing a 14-7 deficit in the second quarter.

Royals quarterback Kemmerin Blalark was under duress most times he went back to pass, taking some major losses from a hard-rushing Bulldogs defensive line and blitzing linebackers.

Fast-improving Batavia junior defensive end/linebacker Josh Leonhard, who missed the start of the season with an ankle injury, was among several Bulldogs who exploited an athleticism edge with Larkin’s line.

“I feel like I’ve gotten faster and stronger,” Leonhard said. “Just overall a better player.”

“The way we look at it is, hey quarterback, you’re outmanned a little bit, you’ve got to have that clock in your head,” Larkin coach Mike Scianna said. “And there are a couple he should have [gotten rid of]. So I’ll blame the quarterback for half of the sacks and the line for half of the sacks.”

After Scaccia’s second touchdown helped Batavia tie Larkin at 14, the Royals (3-3, 2-2 UEC River) squandered their leftover momentum with a regrettable sequence to close the half.

Larkin, starting at its own 20-yard line with 35 seconds left in the half after an interception, was forced to punt following an incomplete pass and two ineffective runs, as the Bulldogs aggressively used timeouts.

Batavia took over at its own 38 with only 10 seconds to go, and made the most of its time for two plays. Senior quarterback Micah Coffey dashed for 17 yards to the Larkin 45, and after the Bulldogs’ final timeout with about 4 seconds to go, Coffey connected with senior Michael Moffatt on a deep seam route down the middle for a touchdown as time expired. The PAT was no good but Batavia led, 20-14.

“Coach just told me to go into the slot,” Moffatt said. “That was going to be our one, deep pass that we had.

I knew Micah was going to give me a chance and just throw it up for us because it was the end of the half so nothing could really happen too bad. So I knew the ball was coming to me, and I happened to run right by the safeties and the secondary.”

While the play provided a major pick-me-up, the Bulldogs still weren’t happy about a first half that was plagued by penalties and two red-zone interceptions by Coffey, one of which was returned 90 yards for a TD by Aaron Campbell.

“At halftime, we had I think six holding calls, four of which brought back I think about 100 yards of offense,” Batavia coach Dennis Piron said. “So that I think was really a big part of that first half. Once we eliminated that holding thing, things were a lot better in the second half. They really couldn’t stop our run.”

Scaccia rushed 26 times for 175 yards and three TDs, and also caught a 21-yard touchdown pass early.

Coffey completed his first five passes and threw for 176 yards and three TDs. Piron’s message to Coffey about the costly-at-the-time picks? Big deal. “ ‘ Don’t lose your swagger – you’re a great player,’ ” Piron said. “He’s harder on himself than we ever could be.”

The Geneva Vikings are back.

So, too, is Marmion.

Wasn’t that long ago that both programs made a trip to Champaign to play in a state championship game. Sly’s certainly not going to say either is going back to Champaign, er, DeKalb, this year, but Friday’s wins for both programs were attention-getters.

Geneva was in control pretty much throughout a 35-21 W over St. Charles East. Not a blowout by any stretch, but there’s no doubt the Vikings deserved to win the game, and considering East came in 4-1 and with plenty of talent, it was a very impressive win.

Now 4-2, Geneva goes Elgin (losers to East Aurora!), Metea Valley, Streamwood the rest of the way.

Point being, the Vikings are hot, and they’re going to get hotter.

Marmion’s win over ACS was the most impressive by an area team on the night, and probably one of the most impressive Ws by an area team all season, on a short list with Batavia’s W over Glenbard North and the Cadets’ own win earlier at Marian.

To not only beat Aurora Christian but stomp the Eagles is a massive notch in the Cadets’ belts, and it makes you wonder how darn good Montini is considering the Broncos beat the Cadets pretty good a week ago.

Marmion is 5-1 and is doing a nice job standing up the meat grinder that is the SCC Blue. Yet another tough one awaits the Cadets next week with an angry St. Francis team on deck.

Too bad about Aurora Christian losing its QB with an injury.

The Eagles can and will run the ball successfully the rest of the way, but it’s a shame to see a passing attack like the Eagles’ shortchanged without their stud quarterback.

Here’s wishing Mr. Bray a recovery before it’s all said and done for Aurora Christian this season.

The Chargers’ third scoring drive, early in the second quarter, featured a couple nice runs by Rahn, who finished with 49 yards rushing on six carries.

Cody Ekstrom scored the touchdown on a 1-yard plunge.

Ekstrom, a senior linebacker, also was a factor defensively, helping ACC limit Walther to two first downs and 86 yards of offense in the first half. The Broncos (15, 1-3) could muster only 38 yards rushing in the opening two quarters.

Batavia boys, Geneva girls strong at meet

By JARED BIRCHFIELD editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – Concerned that predicted thunderstorms would impact varsity races at the 13th annual St. Charles North Cross Country Invitational on Saturday at Leroy Oakes Forest Preserve, race officials pushed up the start time of the two events.

But it was a technical glitch that delayed the final result of the boys’ race.

Resolution of the issue was good news for Batavia as the updated numbers vaulted the Bulldogs into fourth place.

“One of our kids [Ryan Wieties] lost his chip during the race so they tallied up the score without it,” Batavia boys coach Mike DiDomenico said. “He was our number three runner so it impacted the score, and they had to come back and revise it.”

The devices, attached to runners’ shoes, are used to record times at the finish line. Officials determined, by reviewing video of the finish line, that Wieties came in 19th

with a time of 15:47.8.

Adjusted results did not the affect the top three teams – Wheaton Warrenville South (57), New Trier (60) and Jones College Prep (137). Batavia’s revised total of 138 points pushed Marmion into fifth place (153). Twenty-three boys teams competed in the event.

The varsity contests, originally scheduled for 10 and 10:30, were run at 9 and 9:25.

Mitch Zabka was the top Batavia finisher. His time of 15:28.1 on the three-mile course earned him seventh place.

“I thought we ran OK but there is still room for improvement,” DiDomenico said about his team’s effort. “Hopefully we will be ready in two weeks for conference.”

Geneva took second in the girls varsity race with 87 points. St. Charles North (96) finished fourth in a race that was won by Hinsdale Central (71). Minooka (92) and Metea Valley (121) rounded out the top five finishers in the 15team field.

“McKenzie Altmayer is

one of our top runners and she didn’t run because her foot is bothering her so a couple girls stepped up today,” Geneva coach Bob Thomson said.

“Kathryn Adelman [seventh, 18:28.7] ran really well and Brooke Nusser [13th, 18:47.0] is where we are looking for her to be.”

“We also had some help from a couple of freshmen – Gabrielle Thomson [22nd, 19:08.4] and Emma Ehrhardt [24th, 19:13.3],” continued Thomson. “They ran really well today. It was good to see some kids moving up.”

Wheaton Warrenville South’s Nolan McKenna won the boys contest with a time of 15:01.8. Senior Max Rowland from St. Charles East finished eighth with a time of 15:33.9.

Ashley England of St. Charles North took third place in the girls race with a time of 17:55.0. Hinsdale Central’s Alexa Haff won the race.

The freshman completed the circuit in 17:25.2.

Batavia sophomore Dakota Roman’s time of 18:36.9 earned her ninth place.

MELROSE PARK – Early in the second quarter Saturday at Fran Fanelli Field, after an Aurora Central Catholic receiver dropped a perfectly thrown pass by senior quarterback Matt Schaefer, a Charger assistant coach turned to a colleague and said, “Now you know why we’re a running team.”

ACC (4-2, 2-2 SCC Gold) proved early in a 41-6 thrashing of Walther Christian (formerly Walther Lutheran) that it could run the football.

Before the day was over, the Chargers proved they could also throw it a little.

ACC rolled up 251 yards on the ground, with Brian Bohr gaining 89 yards on just seven carries and Julian Rios adding 85 on 10 attempts.

“We were just clicking,” Bohr said. “The offensive line

was just holding their blocks, doing a great job pulling.

Everything was just going right.”

The Chargers took the game’s opening kickoff and drove 60 yards to a touchdown in six plays. Bohr had a 27-yard run on the drive, set up by some nice downfield blocking.

“We’ve worked on that a lot,” ACC coach Brian Casey said. “Those receivers know it’s expected. I think that’s kind of the difference between having 15-yard plays and 30-yard plays.”

Schaefer capped the drive with a 2-yard run on a keeper up the middle.

Late in the first quarter, Rios fielded a punt on the bounce at his own 33 and headed up the left sideline, then cut across the grain, reaching the Bronco 18-yard line before he was finally dragged down. On the next

For someone who died in 479 B.C., he came out with some doozies.

At the bridge table, an expert always wonders about dangers – distributions that might upset his contract. This deal would be misplayed by the unwary, who would assume all will be secure.

But how would a careful declarer proceed? South is in four spades. West leads the heart ace, cashes the king and shifts to a low club.

South’s two-club rebid was New Minor Forcing. It promised at least game-invitational values and asked partner to describe his hand further. Here, North bid two spades to show three-card support.

South has two losers outside the trump suit, so he can afford one spade loser but not two. Regardless, the mathematicians tell us that five missing cards will divide 3-2 a whopping 76.8 percent of the time.

So, what’s the problem?

Win the third trick, play a spade to dummy’s king, and return a spade to the ace ... and go down one. We forget that a 4-1 split has a probability of 28.3 percent – not a lot short of one time in three.

As no doubt you have noticed, on the second round of trumps, South should play his 10. When it wins, he can claim.

But if it loses to the jack or queen, spades are breaking 3-2 and the contract is safe.
