New interns tackle sports reporting Two new interns have been gaining sports writing experience at the Kane County Chronicle.

Jake Powers, a Geneva High School graduate and current student in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of WisconsinMadison, started with us in late August.

“I am very interested in serving as a sports intern for the Kane County Chronicle because I have knowledge of the local sports scene; I have worked with newspapers both at Geneva High School and in college; and sports journalism appears to be my focus as I

continue on with my education,” Jake wrote in an email to me before he started his internship.

Turns out, Jake and I had met before, as I had spoken about journalism in one of his classes at GHS. “Working with the Chronicle would be a great experience for me because it was a few words that you said two years ago when you visited the journalism class that I was in at Geneva High School

that really [spurred] my interest in pursuing a journalism major,” Jake explained. “I’ve always felt a sort of connection to the Chronicle because of this ...”

We’re happy to have Jake writing for us during his fall semester of college.

In addition, Batavia High School senior Matt Puttin started a fall internship with the Chronicle last week.

Matt has a passion for sports and is interested in sports journalism. His first story for us hit the page Friday. It was about Batavia Youth Football getting to play at Bulldog Stadium, where the Batavia varsity football team

regularly plays.

EvenFlow tabbed for $2,500 fine, liquor license suspension

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The owners of EvenFlow Music and Spirits, 302 W. State St., Geneva, will pay a $2,500 fine and have their liquor license suspended during certain times and days in October.

Mayor Kevin Burns, as Geneva’s liquor commissioner, announced the fine and suspension for owners Michael Knuth and Nicholas Mercadante on Friday at a hearing.

The punishment follows an incident Aug. 25 in which the city alleged that Hollywood celebrities were served alcohol from 2 to 5:45 a.m. during a time when liquor license holders cannot serve alcohol and the premises must be closed.

Celebrities were in town the day before at the Hotel Baker in St. Charles for a charity event hosted by TV personality Jenny McCarthy.

Reality TV and soap opera star Kelly Monaco; celebrity dance instructor Sergey Onik; movie and TV actor Heath Freeman; McCarthy’s sister, Joanne McCarthy; and two Geneva residents were cited for public intoxication while

Knuth and Mercadante admitted that they stayed open past the 2 a.m. legal closing time and that they allowed members of the public to remain inside the nightclub venue past the legal closing time.

The owners did not admit to serving or providing alcohol to anyone after hours, according to the settlement and agreed order. And the city agreed to drop those charges.

Burns said he and the city want EvenFlow to succeed, but the presence of celebrities was not a reason to make a poor business decision.

“National celebrities? I don’t care if it’s Jesus Christ and his disciples,” Burns said.

“We have rules to follow.”

Burns praised Knuth and Mercadante for their entrepreneurial spirit – but said they have to follow the terms

of their liquor license.

EvenFlow’s liquor license will be suspended from midnight to 2 a.m. Oct. 1 through 15; then it will be suspended from midnight to 2 a.m.

Sunday through Thursday and from 1 to 2 a.m. Friday through Saturday Oct. 16 to 31.

The order also requires the owners to stop serving alcohol 15 minutes before 2 a.m., and to announce last call 30 minutes before the 1:45 a.m. alcohol cutoff.

Burns said the fine and suspension were fair.

“My position was to enact a penalty that was significant, substantial and stung,” Burns said. “And these gentlemen, perhaps more than any other license holder in town, know that their behavior is being watched – that the entire community will be keeping an eye on them to make sure they abide by the penalties enacted.”

This is EvenFlow’s third liquor code violation and the second for being open past the legal closing time.

Last year’s hot, dry weather led to this summer’s increase in sphinx moth sightings throughout the area. Here, a white-lined sphinx sips nectar from a hosta in St. Charles. the butterflies.

Things were even tougher for monarchs.

Poorly provisioned, they nonetheless had to make a 1,700-mile migration flight to their wintering grounds in the mountain ranges of central Mexico. Researchers estimate the population that overwintered from 2012 to 2013 numbered 60 million, which is a steep drop from the species’ 350 million average.

OK, enough of this gloom and doom. I may be in the minority but, even so, I have a hunch that butterfly numbers will come back again.

Just as our weather patterns did them a disservice last year, it may give them a boost next year.

We’ll just have to wait and see.

In the meantime, we have sphinx moths.

I’ve lost track of the number of calls, emails and text messages I’ve received over the past month or so reporting “this thing that looks like a hummingbird” hovering in

front of flowers throughout the area.

The most commonly reported species is the whitelined sphinx, Hyles lineata, although there have been a fair number of clearwing moths (Hemaris spp., which people frequently describe as “small hummingbirds,” or “large bumblebees”) and assorted others, too.

Although these moths superficially resemble butterflies, and belong to the same insect order, Lepidoptera, their life cycles feature some significant differences.

For one, while most nonmigratory butterfly species overwinter above ground, typically as eggs or as pupae in chrysalises, the sphinx moths by and large overwinter below, in pupal chambers dug in soil.

Interestingly, white-lined sphinx moths are prone to population explosions in warmer, drier climates like those in the Southwest – and here, last year.

Maybe, just maybe, there’s a connection between

2012’s weather patterns and 2013’s apparent sphinx moth success.

This past summer was marked by early rains and, for the most part, seasonable temperatures from start to finish.

It will be interesting to see how our weather this year affects next year’s moth – and butterfly – numbers. I’ve made a note on my calendar to take a look at this topic again in September of 2014.

We’ll revisit it then, if not before …

••• All right, enough with the insects. If entomology – specifically, lepidopterology – isn’t your thing, maybe another “ology” is.

Cryptozoology is the study of animals whose existence is disputed or unsubstantiated.

At Hickory Knolls, we took a closer look at this science – or pseudoscience – and had so much fun we decided to share it with others.

“Where have all the butterflies gone?”

It’s a question that seemingly was on everyone’s minds this summer, at least the minds of everyone who loves butterflies. And really, who doesn’t?

With delicate wings covered in colorful scales, and mouthparts that sip nectar instead of, say, human blood, butterflies typically rank high on people’s lists of “likes” in nature. In fact, we naturalists have a saying, “Butterflies are easy,” meaning that it’s not hard to get people to appreciate them.

Ticks and mosquitoes, by contrast, are hard, but that’s another story for another time.

Back to butterflies. Any population of living organisms is prone to fluctuations over time. When conditions are favorable, numbers go up; when times are tough, numbers go down.

Last year, you may recall, was undeniably tough.

Spring arrived in, what, February, which may at first have seemed like a blessing, but was then followed by months of drought and extreme heat.

Many plants that are vital to caterpillar survival wilted, then shriveled, leaving little for the youngsters to munch on.

Those larvae that made it to butterfly-hood found that being a grownup wasn’t all wine and roses either.

Puddling, a behavior many adult butterflies practice as a means of gathering nutrients from moist soil, was almost nonexistent, save for those lucky enough to be near a shrunken river or stream.

Finding nectar, another key component of butterfly diets, was equally challenging.

Produced as a sweet enticement for pollinators, nectar is an “extra” that plants in strict survival mode can do without.

Hospitals, clinics brace for insurance exchanges Oct. 1

Now, she said, the team only awaits the arrival of the first day of next month to know exactly how well prepared Dreyer actually is.

On Oct. 1, the federal government and many states, including Illinois, will open their health insurance marketplaces, or exchanges, in which Americans can compare and choose from various health insurance coverage plans offered by private insurers.

The exchanges will be opened under the provisions of the Affordable Care Act. Federal officials and supporters of the ACA have said the exchanges could help millions of uninsured Americans, including thousands of local residents, obtain health

But for many hospitals and health care providers, uncertainties remain about how they will be affected by the exchanges.

Hospitals and other health care providers have long noted that uninsured patients can be costly, pointing to studies that show the uninsured tend to put off care longer, and thus, are in worse health and more difficult to treat when they do seek medical help.

Danny Chun, spokesman for the Illinois Hospital Association, estimated there are 1.7 million to 1.9 million uninsured people in Illinois.

Generally, health care administrators said they expect the exchange’s impact to be positive, as more insurance coverage will spur more people to seek out health care services.

But they noted the rollout of the ACA provisions carries some unknowns, including how many people will purchase coverage and what kind of coverage they will buy. The types of policies and their costs likely won’t be known until the exchange opens.

Already, a number of large employers, including Walgreens, Home Depot and UPS, have indicated they will push some of their insured employees into the exchanges.

But the health care provider organizations have not yet been able to view the health insurance plans in the marketplaces.

“We don’t yet know enough about the plans that will be offered on the exchange,” Cooper said. “As soon as the information is released, we will be reviewing it closely to

understand what the impact might be.”

But local hospitals, including Delnor Hospital in Geneva, Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin, Presence St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin and Presence Mercy Medical Center in Aurora, said the outcome could be positive.

Tammy Pressley, director of Community, Government and Public Affairs at Delnor’s parent company, Cadence Health, said enhancing access to health care “is of primary concern to use, not one specific plan versus another.”

“Even the lowest coverage is better than no coverage because it will remove some of the financial barriers to receiving quality care,” Sherman spokeswoman Tonya Lucchetti-Hudson said.

She said an ACA provision instructing Medicaid claims be paid at higher Medicare rates also will help, as it “encourages providers to accept Medicaid patients and may help to level the payor field over time.”

The hospital representatives also said they intend to help their patients navigate the insurance marketplaces once they open. Advocate and Presence noted their participation in the federal “certified application counselors” program.

“It’s going to be a major consumer education process,” Presence spokeswoman Barbara Fallon said.

Doctors and other health care professionals also still need to be educated regarding the provisions of the law.

Ginnie Flynn, spokeswoman for the Illinois Academy of Family Physicians, said there are mixed attitudes about the ACA among physicians.

“Especially our younger members,” Flynn said. “We even ask about the ACA to our medical students ... and the overwhelming response is, ‘I’m not sure what is going on.’ ” Health care providers have been preparing for several

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Virginia Ann (Anderson) Reinken, 79, of Scottsdale, Ariz., passed away Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2013, at her home after a short illness. She was born at Community Hospital on Dec. 5, 1933, in Geneva, to Anne and Iddo (Isadore) Anderson and resided at her home in Batavia for 21 years until moving to the west.

Ginny graduated from Batavia High School in 1951. She earned her bachelor’s degree in business education at Northern Illinois University in 1955.

She worked in the administration as secretary to the president while attending school. She was active in her sorority and served as president of Delta Sigma Epsilon in her senior year.

After graduation and marriage, she moved to El Paso, Texas, in 1955, where her husband was stationed in the Army. She taught her first year in her major while in El Paso. The couple moved to Scottsdale in June 1956, where she pursued her education, earning her master’s degree from Arizona State University in 1958.

She loved teaching and continued to teach 27 years at Scottsdale High and 23 years at Coronado High School, retiring in 2006 having taught over 10,000 teenagers in her 51-year teaching career. She was blessed with a lovely singing voice and starred in many musicals that were presented at Scottsdale High School for the Scholarship Fund, such as “76 Trombones” and “Brigadoon.”

Along with music, she also loved reading, movies, food, close friends and family, her dear cats, “Ms. Kookie” and “Mr. KitKat,” and Ascension Lutheran Church, where she was a

At the age of 2, the family moved to St. Paul, Minn. Growing up in St. Paul, she excelled in academics and with the school newspaper. She graduated in the top of her 1948 Central High class.

After high school, she attended Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. She continued to excel at academics and expanded her skills in journalism. While she was at Vassar, she was admitted into the Phi Betta Kappa honor society.

She graduated with distinction in May 1952.

Carol Joy married her high school sweetheart, George E. Morrison III on Nov. 28, 1952. Together, they traveled the U.S. and Pacific while George advanced in the Army.

Throughout their travels, Carol Joy kept up her love of journalism by writing for the Army post newspaper or rewriting the words of popular tunes for local entertainment.

Her other hobbies included camping and canoeing in the Boundary Waters canoe area, knitting and all types of reading.

In 1966, Carol and George left the military and began new careers. Carol became a librarian for the Ottawa Public library in Ottawa, and George became a safety engineer for Marbon Chemicals.

Carol helped countless students research their papers and learn more about the world around them. In 1977, she earned her master’s degree in library science from Northern Illinois University.

In 1978, Carol and George moved to St. Charles and Carol became a reference librarian for the DuPage Library System. She retired from the library system in June 1996.

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS – Gretchen Barbara Simonson, 96, of the Lutheran Home in Arlington Heights, and formerly of Aurora and Geneva, passed away Thursday, Sept. 19, 2013, at Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights. She was born July 21, 1917, in Cheyenne, Wyo., the daughter of Franz and Anna (nee Truelsen) Frese.

Gretchen was employed by Houghton Mifflin Company for 17 years. In her earlier years, she worked at the Oak Park Library for six years. Gretchen was a devout Christian. She enjoyed gardening and was an avid reader.

She is survived by her two sons, Bruce Goehmann of Denver and Jim (Ruth) Goehmann of Blue Island; two grandchildren, Heidi (David) Hetman and Melissa (Jeff) Kloc; and four great-grandchildren, Ian Hetman, Thomas Kloc, Sarah Kloc and Jacob Kloc.

She was preceded in death by her previous husbands, Robert Goehmann, Charles Rock and Arthur Simonson.

When police confronted him about a similar theft the previous week, Parazaider denied knowledge of the incident, police reported.

Police noted that four tires and rims stolen the previous week were valued at $5,500.

Parazaider, of the 500 block of South 13th Avenue, St. Charles, was charged with felony theft.

An assistant state’s attorney denied charges of burglary and possession of burglary tools, police reported.

According to online court records, Parazaider was released on $2,000 bond and is expected in court Oct. 1.

His 1998 Toyota Camry was towed to the police department, police reported.

ST. CHARLES – A 29-yearold St. Charles man police said was attempting to steal wheels from a vehicle at a St. Charles dealership has been charged with felony theft, according to a St. Charles Police Department report.

Stewart S. Parazaider reportedly told police he was browsing the inventory at Don McCue Chevrolet, 2015 E. Main St., at about 11 a.m. Sept. 15 when he saw a Chevy Suburban on cement blocks.

Thinking it was a “clever” idea, Parazaider bought cement blocks at a home improvement store and gathered sockets, a socket wrench,

a tool to remove locked lug nuts, dark clothing, a face mask and black gloves, police reported.

Parazaider parked his car in the 2400 block of Production Drive and reportedly returned to the dealership after 11 p.m.

He walked to a black 2013 Suburban that Stewart S. was farthest Parazaider back in the lot to avoid being seen, police reported, noting he was trying to remove the final wheel when police arrived.

He reportedly told police he hoped to sell the wheels to a friend.

GENEVA – The Geneva Library Board set a special closed session meeting 9:30 a.m. today at the library, at 127 James St., Geneva, to discuss acquisition of the Cetron property at 7 Richards St., Geneva.

Board president Esther Steel said the primary purpose of the closed meeting is for the board to consider the environmental review of the Cetron property.

Library officials agreed to buy the 2.28-acre property in 2010 for $2 million as the site for a new library.

One of the delays in closing on the foreclosed property was an environmental review, because the building had been used to make light bulbs.

If environmental cleanup on the property is cost prohibitive, the board could take action in open session not to proceed with the purchase,

Steel said.

“Our contract with the seller is constructed to allow us an ‘out’ if we learn that there are environmental conditions on the property that would be cost prohibitive to address,” Steel said. “If it would cost some huge amount to clean it up, the Geneva Public Library can’t afford that.”

The environmental due diligence period ends Sept. 30.

If the board opts out before then, the district would get its $10,000 earnest money back, she said.

If there are no problems, then the board does not have to act to buy the property, as it already has a contract pending, she said.

If things proceed as planned, the closing date is Oct. 15.

A second special meeting is set for 7:30 p.m. Monday to discuss a recent court decision in an annexation dispute with the Batavia Public Library.

Team effort needed for Batavia athletic plan The quest for improvements to the athletic facilities at Batavia High School makes sense.

The fields haven’t seen major improvements since the school was built in 1966. Safety issues exist at some facilities. It’s reasonable to want upgrades.

But the idea of supporting the $13.4 million plan isn’t quite so easy.

A price tag that high is a tough sell during a difficult economy. It would be unrealistic to expect taxpayers to fund a large chunk of such a plan. And it would be unacceptable to quickly push through more specific parts of the plan without significant support from the school district’s residents.

The proposed plan calls for the installation of synthetic turf at the football stadium, as well as 1,000 additional bleacher seats, a press box, a scoreboard and stadium lighting.

Fencing around the baseball field would address a safety issue.

A part of the plan also calls for tennis court lighting and $1.5 million for a new maintenance garage and storage facility.

While academics must come first at any school district, the importance of athletics shouldn’t be minimized.

A strong athletic program can help build a

community, and having the proper facilities can be a factor when potential residents are choosing a place to live.

A school district of Batavia’s stature shouldn’t have low-quality athletic fields. But that doesn’t mean district officials should quickly push forward with any plans.

Areas of improvement must be prioritized. The information must be presented and broken down for residents, with plenty of opportunities for public feedback.

Raising funds is strongly preferred over raising taxes. Donations should be sought. The burden for residents should be as minimal as possible, even if that means the process takes longer than some would like.

If significant funding cannot be raised, then the plan should be scaled down. There is no scenario in which a big boost in taxes would win community support. But this is an effort worth pursuing.

Those interested in seeing the plan’s success must take action and participate, seek donations and be part of the process. Those on both sides should show up at meetings and be aware of each step.

A team effort is needed, and it’s time to get in the game.

I’m calling in regard to a Sound Off in the paper from the person who complained that kids didn’t need to go to Springfield, and that the school didn’t have to pay for this. In my seven years of teaching fourth grade, never did the school pay for those trips.

The children worked at selling ice cream at lunch time. They worked at selling posters. All of which held teaching lessons, as well as raising money. Whatever money was not raised, in order to defray the cost of the trip, the parents would have to pay for it. I wish people would get their story straight and investigate their things.

Wrong word A comment in Sound Off the

other week questioned the use of “passed” for “died.” It was not “passed away,” as mentioned by another reader in last week’s column.

My first little dog came from a pet shop. The first weekend I had her, she nearly died with a parasite from a puppy mill from out of state. I took her to the vet.

They tried to make me pay for expensive antibiotics. I said, charge it to the pet shop. They sold me a sick dog. She’s 13 now, and she’s still with me. My second little dog came from the shelter, and he was aggressive. He had been mistreated. He had been tortured.

We gave him lots of love and after

about a month, he quit shaking and he settled down. He was neutered and had all of his shots and a chip. So get your dogs from a shelter. Don’t buy them from a puppy mill. There’s so many dogs out there that need homes. Do the right thing.

Trains are too loud I understand that trains sound their horns when approaching intersections. However, it seems that the trains going through Batavia and North Aurora during the middle of the night are excessive, to say the least. The decibel level is deafening, not to mention the frequency and length of the horns. At times, it’s so bad that I wonder if the train engineer is bored and just trying to have some fun by waking all of us up. This is maddening to say the least. One would think there would be a local ordinance limiting this nuisance.

Too many charges Our taxes aren’t high enough in Batavia, apparently. Our cost for sewage and water and sewage apparently aren’t high enough in the city of Batavia. Now they want to charge us to maintain the storm drains and the storm basins and so on. What ... is going on with these people? Don’t they know how to manage their money? Don’t they know how to use what they have? Don’t they understand that they’re driving people out of town? If there is one more charge on my bill, I am leaving Batavia. They can stick this place in their ear. We already pay for water going down the drain. We pay for electricity.

We pay for brush pickup. We pay for everything. If we want something from the city, we have to pay a fee. If we want to install a furnace, we have to get an inspection on the furnace and we have to get a permit to have a ... furnace installed in our house.

And now they want to charge us because they can’t keep the storm water straightened out. I clean my storm drains. I don’t see why the city can’t do it. If there’s one more charge, I’m selling my house and getting ... out of dodge.

I’m sick of this place.

I just wanted to say a big thank you to all the Civil War re-enactors who helped make the living history event at Riverwalk Park a huge success this year. Over 1,000 visitors learned about Civil War Army life. With the 150th anniversary of the Civil War upon us, Batavia needs to do more events like this, to honor the nearly 300 Batavia men who served during the Civil War. Also, if you did not see the Civil War display of military artifacts at the Batavia historical museum, you missed a great exhibit. It was wonderful.

They are now doing an exhibit on Civil War medicine and medical practices. It would be well worth your time to take a trip to the Batavia historical museum to see this event.

Break-ins reported at STC businesses

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Multiple businesses in the Foxfield Commons Shopping Center reported break-ins this week, but only one was robbed, according to St. Charles Police Department reports.

Police responded to DeGeo’s Burgers, 2704 E. Main St., St. Charles, after security alarms were activated at about 1:10 a.m. Wednesday, police reported.

During an initial check of the business, nothing appeared out of the ordinary except for a long grease smudge on top of a freezer, police reported.

After sunrise, however, smudges reportedly were discovered on the alarm panel and on the wall near the alarm box. Additionally, the grease filters were out of place and the grease was disturbed, police reported.

Entry apparently was made

from the roof, where a rooftop exhaust fan reportedly was removed.

No money was reported stolen.

A check of neighboring businesses found that Subway, 2708 E. Main St., had several broken shelves, broken ceiling panels and an open hole in the ceiling, but nothing appeared missing, police reported.

Bolts also had been removed from an exhaust fan on the roof over Butera Market, 2732 E. Main St., police reported, but the manager was unsure whether that situation was new or old.

All paper currency was reported stolen from the registers at Foxfield Cleaners, 2778 E. Main St. The offenders shut off power to the business, rendering the surveillance equipment ineffective, police reported, adding footage ended at 11:02 p.m.

Entry to the cleaners was reportedly made through an exhaust fan in the ceiling.

On Friday, the night he surpassed North alumnus Jake Rigert’s former standard of 258 tackles, Conroyd showed off some resiliency, too.

The senior linebacker actually fumbled a second-quarter carry before entering the North record book, and made his 257th tackle one play after Elgin

faked a punt for a first down deep in its own territory.

Other than that, the North Stars’ 49-0 Upstate Eight Conference River Division victory went seamlessly for Conroyd and North, although Conroyd at times strived for more.

Although he downplayed it, Conroyd recorded the night’s more lasting milestone when he stopped the Maroons’ Jaylen Clemons for no gain with 1:20 remaining in the third quarter.

“This is my third year. I haven’t played a single playoff game. So [the record] doesn’t mean anything to me,” Conroyd said. “What means [something] to me is win this game and go on to next week, because next week is what counts. Getting wins every week.”

NAPERVILLE – Mikey Dudek has a chummy sounding first name, but the Neuqua Valley receiver was cold-blooded Friday night as far as the St. Charles East football team was concerned.

Dudek punctured the Saints in just about every way imaginable – and that was just the first half – as Neuqua handed the Saints their first loss of the season, 54-28, in an Upstate Eight Conference crossover. “[East assistant coach Max Payleitner] said he’s the best high school football player he’s ever seen,” Saints coach Mike Fields said. “I’ve been doing this a little bit longer, there are a couple others I’d put in there, [former Geneva running back Michael Ratay] being one, but I would certainly put him in there with that kind of a caliber of kid. He ran circles around us at times.”

The Illinois recruit directly accounted for five touchdowns – three on conventional catches, one on the back end of a hook-and-ladder, one on a kickoff return – and he returned another kick to East’s 3, setting up the Wildcats’ opening score.

The 5-foot-10 Dudek took

East’s second kick of the night 94 yards all the way to the end zone as the Wildcats pounced early. Before the first half was through, Dudek added a 28-yard TD reception and a crowd-pleasing finish of a 48-yard, hook-and-ladder play in which he took a pitch from fellow receiver Ryan Kuhl to supply Neuqua with a 34-16 lead by halftime.

“That’s the point of football, to get a touchdown, so whenever Erik Anderson I get the ball, I’m giving it 110 percent, trying to find the end zone,” Dudek said.

East (3-1) appeared to create some traction late in the second quarter when H-back Phil Hopper caught his eighth pass of the half, a wide-open, 10-yard TD grab from quarterback Jimmy Mitchell. After the PAT, East trailed 28-16.

Hopper finished with 10 catches for 113 yards and two TD receptions.

“You hate to have your best game in a loss, but Phil’s been working hard like we’ve said,” Fields said.

“We’ve been challenging Phil every week, and he always responds. He’s a great kid.”

O’Connor was a Big Northern East All-Conference player during his Sophomore and Junior seasons, and his junior year he led the team in assists. After playing in the only loss of the season so far, the coach from the opposing team gave O’Connor great compliments on how hard he worked.

Moffatt plays wide receiver and center for Batavia Football. He also holds, returns kicks, and punts. Overall, he is a do-it-all player!

In June, Nathaniel was invited to the Midwest Distance Gala, where he won the 800m run, breaking a school record set in 1975. His time is the fastest in the state and ranks in the top 10 in the country. He was a member of the state 2A champion 4x800 relay team in the Spring.

A Northern Illinois recruit, Krage has shined as an outside hitter for the North Stars, who won the Plainfield North tournament over Labor Day weekend.

MAPLE PARK – The Kaneland football team was able to overcome the loss of one of the main cogs of its offensive machine Friday night, trouncing winless Streator, 42-0, and showcasing their depth in the process.

It was confirmed late Thursday that team captain and feature running back Jesse Balluff tore his ACL in the game against Sterling last week, ending his season and leaving the Knights short a key leader.

Despite an emotional week of practice, Kaneland

(4-0) rallied around the adversity and use it as motivation in the Northern Big 12 Crossover matchup.

“It was a real emotional thing because Jesse’s such a big part of the team,” coach Tom Fedderly said. “It was the first time in three years that the kid hasn’t come out and played with us.”

Senior quarterback and fellow captain Drew David echoed Fedderly’s evaluation of the loss of his teammate.

Montini too much for St. Francis

By IAN MATTHEWS editorial@kcchronicle.com LOMBARD – It was déjà vu all over again for St. Francis Friday night in Lombard in a pivotal early-season Suburban Christian Conference matchup against Montini.

St. Francis entered the showdown with Montini with a 3-0 mark just like last time, but the Broncos thoroughly dominated the contest once again.

This time, St. Francis stayed with the highly touted Broncos for a half, but a few big plays proved to be the Spartans’ undoing in a 30-7 loss, a similar result to last year’s 28-7 game.

“We had a crazy serious week preparing and we had a great week of practice leading up to this game,” St. Francis punter Jack Ahern said. “We just didn’t play well in the second half. We didn’t execute that well today. In the second half, I think we were expecting them to lay over, and they obviously didn’t.”

A couple of big plays by Montini (4-0, 2-0 SCC Blue) – a Leon Thornton III 83-yard touchdown catch and a 92yard interception return for a TD from Derrick Curry – put the Broncos up 17-0 despite St. Francis having success on the defensive side of the ball.

“We were so hyped for this game – our captains came into the locker room and fired us all up,” Thornton III said. “Alex and I work on our chemistry together in practice. Ever since he transferred last year, we just

had that chemistry.”

Offensively, St. Francis had no answer for Montini’s enormous defensive front led

by Ohio State recruit Dylan Thompson. Thompson helped limit St. Francis running back James Butler to 95 yards on 25 carries.

“They are a really good football team and you just can’t

spot a team like that 14 points early,” St. Francis coach Greg Purnell said. “In the second half, we were just really mistake prone, and we have to clean that up.”

Trying to work around the big plays, the St. Francis defense got enough stops to keep the Spartans in the game well into the third quarter. After forcing a Montini three-andout, Thomas Petrando recovered a fumble on Ahern’s punt that gave St. Francis great field position.

But, a trio of Butler runs went nowhere before a Prociuk pass fell incomplete on fourth down, turning the ball back over to Montini.

On the ensuing drive, Wills hit a streaking Thronton III for a 45-yard touchdown strike that was the third hookup between the duo to make it 30-0.

Clint Bobowski scored from five yards out to finally put St. Francis on the board.

Wills finished 15 for 20 for 231 yards and three touchdown tosses.

I know what you’re thinking. Because, I thought it myself. I figured I could just put off this whole retirement thing for another year or maybe two. Then it hit me. Geneva escapes frantic 2nd quarter, Larkin

By JARED BIRCHFIELD editorial@kcchronicle.com ELGIN – The Geneva football team returned to the win column with a 41-34 win over Larkin at Memorial Field on Friday night.

Larkin’s Damion Clemons did not make it easy for the Vikings, who snapped a twogame losing skid. The senior finished 276 yards of total offense and scored three touchdowns.

Almost all of the first-half scoring happened in the last 127 seconds of a chaotic second quarter.

got on the board on its first possession of the game. A 4-yard run by T.J.Miller, (167 yards on 28 carries) capped a seven-play, 58-yard drive, putting the Vikings ahead 6-0 at the 8:29 mark of the first quarter.

After that, T.J. Miller neither team reached the goal line until the 2:07 mark of the second quarter.

Geneva extended its lead to 13-0 on a 7-yard pass from junior Daniel Santacaterina to senior Kyle Brown.

Marmion football handles Marian Central on road KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE WOODSTOCK – With his team facing an important third and 16 on Marian Central’s 42 yard line Friday, Marmion football coach Dan Thorpe thought back to this week’s practices.

After the two previous running plays netted negative-six yards, Marmion caught the Hurricanes’ defense overpursuing. Cadets running back Jordan Glasgow took a toss around the left side but pulled up to pass and hit running back Josh Meyers wide open down the left sideline for a 42-yard touchdown that put Marmion up by 11 with 42 seconds left in the third quarter.

The unbeaten Cadets went from there in a crucial 28-10 Suburban Christian Conference Blue win.

The Cadets (4-0, 2-0 SCC Blue) set the tone early, scoring on a 16-play, 73-yard drive that saw the Cadets convert two third and longs, with Marmion scoring on a slant route from Brock Krueger to Seth Sevenich for a 3-yard touchdown on fourth and goal from the three.

The Marmion defense picked off Hurricanes quarterback Billy Bahl three times, with Sevenich coming down with two and Nick Ferraro adding one. In the second quarter, Marmion recovered a Marian

Central fumble and Krueger hit Sevenich for a 43-yard gain on the next play. Four plays later, Glasgow ran it in from one yard out to go up by a touchdown with 1:41 left in the half.

Marian (3-1) was coming off an 81-point outburst last week against Guerin.

Aurora Central Catholic 28, Chicago Christian 6: At Aurora, ACC improved to 3-1 and 1-1 in the SCC with a home win.

A balanced running attack boosted the Chargers, as Julian Rios, Matt Schaefer, Brian Bohr and Hunter Fliorito all scored on the ground.

Harvard 17, Burlington Central 13: At Burlington, with Harvard holding a 4-point lead with 6:53 remaining in the final quarter, Central went on a long drive starting at their own 29-yard line.

With less than 1:30 remaining, Burlington Central (1-3, 1-1 Big Northern Conference East) was nine yards away from stealing a win on its homecoming night. Any thoughts of a Rockets victory were quickly extinguished as Harvard linebacker Matthew Wheeler came up with a 15-yard sack on a third-down play. Burlington Central could not convert on fourth down.

Aurora Christian wins big, remains on cruise control

Through four games this year, the Eagles have outscored Trevor Hills their opponents 233- 21.

and hooked up with Noah Roberts with a 2-yard touchdown pass with 8:37 in the first quarter to make the lead 14-0.

“We work really well together and our chemistry showed today,” Bray said.

“We [looked good] offensively and we were able to move the ball.”

The Eagles’ special teams also were involved in two big plays, one turned in by Roberts, who returned a punt in first quarter with 6:54 left to make the score 21-0 Eagles.

Trevor Hills set a school record with a 45-yard field goal in the second half to help seal the victory.

Hills started his high school career at Wheaton Academy.

“I wanted Trevor to kick against his old school and I wanted him to get the all-time record,” Beebe said.

To 75-year-old Kay Harbaugh of St. Charles, it’s her latest proud title.

A recent addition to the running community, Harbaugh found inspiration through her granddaughter, Lily, of St. Charles, who runs cross country as an eighth-grader at Harvest Christian Academy in Elgin.

She started toward that goal at her winter home in Florida, joining a running group called Sole Mates that met three times a week. Until then, Harbaugh had only run the baseline as an avid tennis player for nearly three

decades until she suffered an arm injury.

These days, Harbaugh prefers discussing her neck.

“She just said, ‘Grandma, I’m so proud of you and I just wanted to give this to you because I love what you’ve trying to do,’ ” Harbaugh said.

Costas’ new constituency: Valparaiso, Ind., mayor Jon Costas may not be in league with fellow hizzoners Ray Rogina (St. Charles), Kevin Burns (Geneva) or Jeff Schielke (Bat-

avia), but he knows much of the lay of the land of those mayors’ respective towns.

One of many runners using the Fox Valley race as a 2014 Boston Marathon qualifying attempt, Costas has visited Geneva’s Herrington Inn with his wife, Sharon, annually for the past several years.

Their trips routinely include recreation along the Fox River Trail.

“When we go on vacation, I run and bike a lot because that’s how I relax,” said Costas, 56. “But yeah, I love the trail. I’ve been on quite a few long runs there.”

Rogina has registered for the half-marathon.

It’s academic: Chris Wright of Champaign is another outof-town runner who brings muscle memory to the trail; she recently took a bike ride while visiting friends.

Wright’s other suburban excursions stem from her involvement as a speedskater on ice and inline tracks. She works as an assistant director of DNA services at the University of Illinois by day.

Wright doesn’t need her education to confirm it’s a rougher fall on ice than it is on pavement.

“When the group tumbles [skating], it can feel pretty bad,” she said.

FOX VALLEY MARATHON BREAKDOWN Three years ago, before the inaugural running of the Advocate Dreyer Fox Valley Marathon, we offered Chronicle Country 26.2 reasons to attend – a motive for every mile.

Judging by the bustling runner registration and attendance since then, folks don’t necessarily need further incentive to support athletes in downtown St. Charles or along the Fox River Trail.

“We’re pretty much the same thing, just bigger,” co-organizer Dave Sheble said. “Bigger and better.”

Sheble left out a “B,” it turns out. Two if you count his partner, Craig Bixler. Sunday’s marathon strives to be basic above all. Beginning with those

essentials and moving on from there, here’s a spectator’s guide to the race: THE BASICS When: The national anthem begins at 6:45 a.m. Sunday, with waves for the marathon, half-marathon and 20-mile race beginning at 7. Each wave has about 100 people and starts every 30 seconds.

Where: The races start and finish near the intersection of Illinois and First streets in downtown St. Charles. The majority of the courses traverse the Fox River Trail.

Parking: Five garages or lots throughout town offer free parking. With entrances in parentheses, they include:

West Side garage (W. Walnut St.); East Side garage (E. Walnut Ave., 2nd Ave. or Third Ave.); East Side lots (2nd Ave.); Northwest lots (N. 2nd St.); Northeast lots (Riverside Ave., N. 3rd Ave., State Ave.).

In addition, there is free street parking in the residential areas near downtown.

LOOK UP THERE There’s a new start/finish line – the item itself, not the physical location – this fall, designed to highlight a sleeker marathon logo.

“Runners who’ve been with us for a long time will likely see it more polished, I think, at the start and finish line this year with some things that we’ve

done, which is good,” Sheble said.

SOMETHING FOR THE KIDS At 3 p.m. today, the Fox Valley Kids Marathon culminates as registrants complete their final 1.2 miles together. The group logged its first 25 miles through regimented, logbook runs beginning in early June.

Bixler and Sheble praised former St. Charles East coach and athlete Denise Hefferin’s work with coordinating the event.

“Some of these kids are the soccer kids that are out there, athletic anyway, and that’s wonderful,” Bixler said, “but some of them are kids who normally wouldn’t do this kind of stuff, and that’s just the best.”

GO FORWARD, MOVE AHEAD ...

Call it common sense for an uncommon feat.

Although Bixler and Sheble aren’t urging runners against using their cellphone cameras like organizers of the Hong Kong Marathon – a woman’s “selfie” at the start line caused a chaotic pileup in February – they hope athletes have an eye on their own and others’ safety.

“If there’s 20,000 people behind you running full speed, don’t come to a full stop in the middle of the road,” Bixler said.

With a total expected field of about 3,700 runners this year, Bixler and Sheble need not worry.

Ken Schramm finished April’s Boston Marathon before the horrific bombings, but knows his fate would have been anyone’s guess had he stayed to cheer fellow runners.

A workmanlike finishing time and a quick flight home to Joplin, Mo., ensured an unwitting Schramm’s safety then.

His journey to St. Charles for Sunday’s Advocate Dreyer Fox Valley Marathon is a much more brooding one.

Joined by his wife, Dianne, and daughter, Angelina, Schramm will descend on the Tri-Cities for the first time since June 2011, when marathon co-organizers Craig Bixler and Dave Sheble offered a fundraiser run for the victims of the Joplin tornado in May of that year.

“It was a pretty touching, moving experience to come up there,” Schramm said. “We hadn’t met and we didn’t know anyone from that area, but we wanted to be there because they were willing to honor and raise money for the victims and people of Joplin.”

Schramm, 49, yearned to run the Fox Valley Marathon in the years since, but conflicts with his schedule always

kept him from that goal.

In 2011, 10-year-old Angelina helped distribute medals that initially were to be awarded to runners of the Boomtown Half-Marathon, which Joplin officials canceled in the wake of the tornado.

“Somehow, we’re stuck in all these different tragedies, and we try to live life to its fullest,” Ken Schramm said.

“Everybody Kay Harbaugh that we’ve encountered and met, it means a lot to us.”

Grateful Schramm treks from Joplin to St. Charles

Geneva graduate Matt Brandys is acclimating to the Miami (Ohio) baseball program after transferring from another Division-I program, Stetson (Fla.). Brandys, who redshirted at Stetson as a freshman last year, has applied for an NCAA waiver that would make him immediately eligible to compete at Miami, with the decision still pending. In this week’s Weekend Chit-chat with Kane County Chronicle sports editor Jay Schwab, the right-handed pitcher discusses his move, switching from one of the oldest D-I coaches at Stetson to one of the youngest at Miami and sharing the Mid-American Conference with former Geneva baseball and football teammate Matt Williams. The following is an edited transcript:

What’s the background on your decision to head back to the midwest?

I just didn’t think Stetson was the best place for me to develop. I didn’t necessarily have the best relationship with the head coach, I guess you could say. … I would have loved to play for the as-

sistant coach [Mark Leavitt] who recruited me but it turns out coach [Pete Dunn] decided to come back, so I felt it wasn’t the best place for me to develop as a pitcher there.

So when was you final decision to move to Miami?

I want to say it was probably Aug. 9 or 10. It really came down to Walters State (a junior college power in Tennessee), Coastal Carolina and Miami. … Under normal circumstances, transferring D-I to D-I, usually there’s a year where you’re ineligible.

You can practice on the team but you can’t play. That was kind of my big concern, but looking to transfer to D-I, I talked to the compliance departments at both Miami and Coastal Carolina, and they were going to file a waiver under academic reasons to transfer, which did come into play. Miami is a much stronger school. They offer a zoology department that Stetson didn’t offer.

Was it tough to part company with some of your teammates and [coach Leavitt]?

at our 5 o’clock workouts every morning running our practices, lifting with us. It’s different for sure, more energy more enthusiasm, more optimism.

Do you envision projecting more as a starter or a reliever?

Without a doubt. … I want to say we had six, seven kids in my recruiting class leave, which doesn’t say much for their program. It’s a great place to be, a great program, great baseball, but I just didn’t think a lot of players necessarily felt it was the best place to develop.

So is it kind of bizarre to go from one of the older coaches in D-I to one off the youngest?

Oh yeah, it’s a huge difference, and I’m not taking anything away from coach Dunn. He’s one of the best baseball minds I’ve ever been around. He knows the game so well. I have nothing but respect for him. … [Miami coach Danny Hayden] is

The goal is obviously everyone wants to be that Friday night [starter]. I was kind of talking with coach Hayden and he said, ‘Without a doubt, I see it as a very strong possibility.’ I had a good showing at workouts with the Padres and Braves, and they seemed pretty enthusiastic about it. Whether I’m a closing guy or a Friday night or Saturday guy ... nothing is going to be given.

It’s got to be earned, and that’s the way it should be.

Pumpkins represent simple comforts of home When I was a little girl, every Halloween brought with it the promise of not only costumes and candy, but at least one evening spent curled up in front of the television broadcast of “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.”

And scarcely an October has passed since that didn’t find me with a warm drink in hand, waiting to see what would happen to Linus in that pumpkin patch.

If there’s one thing children and adults can agree on, it’s that we all love pumpkins. And after months spent dreaming up new and interesting uses for asparagus, eggplant and kohlrabi, the sight of pumpkins once again dotting porch steps calls to mind the simple comforts of home: pies and hearths and chilly autumn nights lit by the glow of jack-olanterns.

Pumpkins are fairly easy to grow and are such fun at harvest time that it’s well worth devoting some space to them (and some of the varieties we’ll discuss – all good choices for beginners – require little more than a large pot and something to tie them to). Keep in mind they are tender plants, with seeds that won’t germinate in soil that is too cold and seedlings that can be damaged by frost. To avoid injury and still have a crop in time for Hallow-

There are both vining and bush varieties of pumpkins, and if you do choose a sprawling vine, care should be taken to ensure adequate space is provided.

Plant in full sun and keep the surrounding area well watered and free of weeds.

• Jack Be Little, Wee Be Little, and Baby Boo. Even if I hated pumpkins, I may have had to write this column solely as an excuse to share these darling names with all of you. (Be honest – I had you at “Baby Boo.”) As it happens, they are hands down my favorite pumpkins to grow at home. Not only are the miniature fruits adorable in orange and white and small enough to fit in the palm of your hand, their diminutive size also makes them easy to incorporate into the garden – ideal if, like me, you are working within the confines of a pretty small space.

They can be planted along fences, or trained to grow on trellises, arbors, or even a porch railing.

Sugar pie pumpkins are small and sweet, and their smooth texture makes them a wonderful choice for pies, muffins, breads and soups.

This year I planted the seeds in a container and tied the vines to grow up a trellis along a garage wall. They are simple and fun for kids to grow, and they make great fall decorations in your home.

• Sugar Pie Pumpkins. Sugar pie pumpkins are small and sweet, and their smooth texture makes

them a wonderful choice for pies, muffins, breads and soups.

Like the miniature varieties, the pie pumpkins can be tied securely to a trellis to save precious space in the garden.

Once they grow too heavy for the vine, fashion a sling from strips of fabric (old T-shirts, pantyhose, etc.) to support them.

Here we have the quintessential Halloween pumpkin – perfect for carving jack-o-lanterns or taking first prize at the state fair. This heirloom variety, introduced to New England settlers prior to 1700, is orange with a classic round shape and grows 15-20 pounds, though some may grow even larger. This vining type likes to sprawl and is often planted in hills with 50-100 square feet per hill required. Hills should be spaced 5-6 feet apart.

No matter which type of pumpkin you choose, the real fun comes with the harvest.

When pumpkins are a deep solid color and the rind is hard – typically late September into October – they can be cut from the vine with pruning shears.

Be sure to leave a few inches of stem attached (“the handle”) as pumpkins will keep better.

Warm some cider or whip up a batch of hot buttered rum, grab a stack of wool blankets and enlist a few friends to help out in the pumpkin patch. And do keep an eye out for that Great Pumpkin.

Enjoying Fox Valley theater scene with Paramount’s ‘In the Heights’ My 15-year-old wasn’t up for a play.

Seems my standards have dipped quite low, recently. Being in the same room qualifies as quality family time? Is that what it’s come to? Seriously? Good lord. Never thought we’d be “those” people. Whatever.

hopes and dreams, changes and griefs, took home a handful of Tony’s a few years ago. I’ll say it again. How lucky are we to get to enjoy such fine theater right here in the Fox Valley, without having to schlep all the way to Chicago?

I couldn’t help but be reminded of another show with an urban setting – “Sesame Street.”

‘Heights’ delivers unvarnished family truths • THEATER

Continued from page 31 Sorry guys, but, you know, the stoop, the people with deep roots so interconnected with each other, the grocer and even the friendly vendor peddling products on the street? Yeah.

No offense to the Paramount’s truly terrific orchestra and the perfectly cast players of “The Heights” (perfectly!), led by Nick Demeris (Usnavi), but I admit I’ve had the classic “Sesame Street” tune, “Who Are the People in Your Neighborhood?” stuck in my head all week.

Stuck. I’m a mom. It happens.

Little ones actually will be thrilled with the fantastic dancing (hip-hop!), singing and pulsing energy of “Heights,” but the show may not appeal to all audiences, as it’s more of a PG performance. Think “Dirty Dancing” but with a little less skin. And a few more “swears.”

I admit, my kids did kinda enjoy observing the couple seated in front of us, for whom the swearing clearly inspired discomfort. But at least they enjoyed it together. I’ll take what I can get. Like I said, my standards are low.

My compliments to the director, Rachel Rockwell, who also directed the Paramount’s “Annie” and “The Music Man.” Not one of the portrayals in “The Heights,” which plays

There was nothing distracting to make me wish I’d spent my precious time elsewhere, or my kids railing at me for “putting me through this.”

Here, the dancing, while certainly impossible to miss and thoroughly enjoyable, avoids demanding attention and instead helps to tell the story without distracting from

it. In fact, everything about this show, even the swearing, feels honest.

In fact, I really did feel the tender heat between Nina and Benny, played by Christina Nieves and Jonathan Butler-Duplessis. You want sweetness and light? That’s cool, but head to another show.

You want unvarnished truths about the struggles and joys of family and community? Come into “The Heights.” You won’t be disappointed. Like the characters, you’ll find it hard to leave.

SOUTH ELGIN – South Elgin will host its first Pumpkin/Halloween Fest the weekend of Oct. 19 and 20 at Vasa Park in South Elgin. The event hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Oct. 19 and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 20.

The festival will feature a pumpkin patch, hayride, pony rides, a petting zoo, spooky sweet morgueFile photo shop, live music, food South Elgin will host its first Pumpand a Dark Harvest.

‘Good Ol’ Freda’ protects the Beatles’ past

By STEPHANIE MERRY The Washington Post The members of the Beatles valued their longtime secretary, Freda Kelly, in part, because of her ability to celebrate the musicians while guarding their personal lives. Noble though it may be, her reticence does “Good Ol’ Freda” no favors. The documentary transmits plenty of positive vibes, but it offers nothing fresh about the Fab Four.

Kelly was a gangly 16-year-old Liverpudlian working in a typing pool when she walked into the Cavern Club and first heard the Beatles. It was love at first sound, and she got to know Paul, John, George and then-drummer Pete Best well while hanging out with the group after shows.

Kelly took over the reins of the group’s fan club, and when band manager Brian Epstein asked her if she’d like to work for the band full time, she jumped at the chance.

So began an 11-year journey, full of giddy highs and, toward the end, devastating lows. For the most part, Kelly does the talking.

The 60-something grandmother

stills works as a secretary, and she hasn’t lost the infectious smile that pops up onscreen countless times in photographs from the good old days.

As she reminisces, there are hints of the dizzy fangirl she once was.

That Kelly was such a huge fan of the Beatles was a boon to the scores of fanatics who wrote to the band’s fan club, begging for locks of John’s hair and bits of Paul’s shirt.

She knew how it felt to be a fan, so Kelly dutifully journeyed to the barber shop with the guys and procured threads from castoff clothing. She became like a sister to the quartet and, since her mother had died when she was a baby, found a surrogate mother in Ringo’s mom, Elsie.

Kelly sits on a plaid couch and relays cute anecdotes and exciting episodes while director Ryan White weaves in archival footage of girls fainting and images of old headlines.

The soundtrack consists primarily of Beatles covers.

While the tales of the band’s spectacular rise create a genial mood, the film feels superficial. Kelly can be cagey, and when a voice offscreen asks if she ever dated any of the guys, she

demurs, saying, “That’s personal.”

This comes as less of a shock once Kelly recalls an episode in which she scolded the band’s fans in a newsletter for their curiosity over John’s extramarital affair with Yoko Ono and the status of Paul’s marriage.

Intensely loyal, Kelly also refused offers of money for tidbits of information about the Beatles.

The documentary is ostensibly about Kelly, but questions remain unanswered about her, as well. Her daughter is interviewed, but it’s unclear what happened to Kelly’s husband.

The death of Kelly’s son is mentioned only in passing.

Having spent more than a decade working with the Beatles, Kelly must have loads of secrets she keeps hidden away like all the boxes of Beatles scrapbooks stacked in her attic.

Her tight-lipped nature is commendable, but it leaves a moviegoer wanting more.

• The film “Good Ol’ Freda” received two and a half stars. The film is rated PG and contains some thematic material and smoking. It runs 87 minutes.

Husband’s expectations wear on wife’s patience Dear Abby: I am fortunate to be a stay-at-home mom. My days are spent doing chores and taking care of the kids. I also volunteer extensively at their schools, but I do find time for other pursuits, such as reading and writing.

My problem is my husband.

“Bob” is the kind of guy who can’t sit still. When he’s home on weekends or taking a day off, he constantly needs to be doing something. This involves projects around the house. Because he’s always on the go, he insists I should be equally “productive.”

He constantly wants to know what I’m doing, and if it’s not something he thinks is useful, he becomes passive-aggressive.

Bob initiates big projects and then complains that he gets no help and has no time for himself.

He says my volunteerism takes away from time I should be doing things around the house. In addition, Bob is incredibly neat and often insists that our immaculate house needs to be cleaned.

I dread the days he’s home because I have to constantly justify my activities or feel guilty if I’m not busy the entire time.

I have felt she resented me. It’s like she doesn’t like sharing Dad with me. She had him all to herself for 10 years, so I guess I kind of understand.

Kathy recently found a job across the country, so she and Dad sold their house and moved away a few weeks ago. Her family lives here and she had job offers closer to home, but she chose the one farthest away. I can’t help but feel she did it to put distance between Dad and me, and it hurts me deeply. You don’t know for certain that she accepted the job to separate you and your dad. Remember, he AGREED to the move.

Cycling is great exercise but requires good traffic sense Dear Doctor K: I’d like to start biking to work. Any advice before I get back on my bike?

Dear Reader: Cycling is great exercise. For one thing, it gets you breathing harder and your heart rate up. That pays cardiovascular dividends. Cycling stacks up well against other forms of exercise when it comes to burning calories, too. And it isn’t as hard on the knees as running.

Perhaps the biggest advantage of cycling is that it can perform double duty as a form of transportation. A number of my patients, and my colleagues here at Harvard Medical School, bicycle to and from work every day.

One of my colleagues once said: “I don’t need to go to the gym, and I don’t need to pay the gym or pay for parking. I have bike paths most of the way, so during rush hours it takes no longer than driving. Except on a rainy day, the advantages are obvious.” During blizzards, he takes the car. “I’m not a complete nut about cycling,” he assured me.

Now and then, cyclists injure a muscle. But the main risks of cycling are not from the physical activity but from traffic. The vast

Reckless cycling can be a factor, too. Being on two wheels doesn’t mean that traffic laws don’t apply to you. Running red lights and weaving in and out of traffic is courting disaster. And it’s surprisingly common, at least in Boston. I sometimes wonder if part of what makes some cyclists enthusiastic about cycling is the sense that they are courting danger.

And of course, wear a helmet.

The worst injuries to cyclists are head injuries. A patient of mine couldn’t find his helmet, was in a rush and went cycling without it.

He hit a pothole and sustained a severe concussion. Fortunately, he fully recovered, but it took six weeks.

Be especially wary about cars

parked along the side of the street.

Running into a car door that has opened suddenly is a common way to get hurt. Sure, drivers should be looking in their sideview mirrors before opening the door, but they often don’t.

Bad technique or positioning, or a bike that’s the wrong size, can make cycling uncomfortable to the point of pain and may eventually result in injuries.

High-end bike stores offer fitting services for a fee. It will be money well spent if you’re cycling a lot. If any problems come up – knee, lower back or buttock pain, or numb hands and wrists are among the more common – a bike store should be able to make adjustments to your bike or help you tweak your technique.

Teen disapproves of mom’s slob of a husband Dr. Wallace: I’m 17 and live at home with a wonderful mom and a not-so-wonderful father.

Mom is an elementary school teacher and a very wonderful and intelligent human being.

Dad is a high-school dropout who owns an automobile repair shop. It’s a very successful shop, and he earns quite a nice sum of money. He has a contract with the city to work on their vehicles.

Why my parents ever married is a mystery.

Mom is cultured and refined while my father is a loudmouth slob who drinks too much, uses filthy language and threatens to “beat you and your mother to a bloody pulp,” yet he never has been violent.

Rarely does he come home from his job in time for dinner with Mom and me. Instead, he frequents his favorite “watering hole” with his drunken friends, drinking and chasing women.

Would you believe that several times he has brought home women he picked up? He told them that he wasn’t married and was too drunk to realize that his wife and daughter were at home.

Fortunately, I have no siblings.

I keep telling mom to divorce this useless bum, or at least get a legal separation. She listens but doesn’t act.

I never bring any of my friends over for fear he just might come home. I never take that risk.

What can I do to get my mom to dump this dud? We don’t need his money. – Nameless, Miami, Fla. Dear Nameless: Your father’s behavior is clearly beyond reconciliation. The decision to leave this guy is up to your mother, but I hope she listens to you. Obviously, leaving him is not

Dr. Wallace: Our health and safety teacher told our class that about 20 percent of high school seniors used cocaine at least once. I find that very hard to believe. I wanted to challenge the teacher, but I chickened out because he’s our football coach and has the reputation of being mean and ornery.

If it differs from the teacher’s, I’ll pass it on. – Nameless, Dallas, Texas Dear Nameless: Your teacher’s information is pretty close to being accurate. The University of Michigan conducted a nationwide survey of drug use among high school seniors and found that 16 percent had used cocaine at some time in their lives, even if it was only once to satisfy curiosity.

Experts estimate that about 3 percent of American high school seniors are regular users of cocaine, and that’s 3 percent too many!

Robert Byrne, an author and expert on billiards (not the chess player), said, “Nobody ever committed suicide while reading a good book, but many have while trying to write one.”

Some bridge players metaphorically commit suicide by making a play that kills their contract when they could have kept it alive by doing something different – and should have worked that out with careful analysis.

In today’s deal, South puts himself into four spades. West leads the heart eight because his partner bid the suit twice. East wins with his ace and returns the heart queen. What should declarer do?

It would have been sensible for South to rebid three notrump, not four spades. Assuming West is going to lead a heart, that would give South nine top tricks.

In four spades, given that dummy has the club king, there seem to be 10 top tricks: six spades, one heart, one diamond and two clubs. So perhaps South thinks that he can take the second trick with his heart king, draw trumps, and claim.

However, drawing trumps would be delayed because West ruffs the heart king. If West returns a trump, the contract is dead. Or if, say, West shifts to a diamond, South will win and play a heart.

Now West must ruff high and lead his last spade – surely not taxing plays to find.

The bidding marks West with a singleton heart. So, South should play a low heart, not his king, at trick two. And if East persists with a third heart, South plays low again. With declarer’s 10th winner safe, the contract rolls home. Stop to consider the alternatives.
