The first fair was held six years ago and was the idea of former Historical Society president Joanne Pick, who originally planned for the event to be an ice cream social, Roy said.

Yates said the festival evolved into an antique fair because of the historical society’s connection to old and historic items.

It will be the first Street Fair since Pick died on June 24.

“It’s a great tribute to her that her idea has carried on after all these years,” Roy said.

dfarnham@shawmedia.com LEMONT – Representatives from Lemont-Bromberek Combined School District 113A and the Lemont-Bromberek Council of American Federation of Teachers Local 604 see positive signs in the ongoing teacher contract negotiations.

“We continue to meet and continue to make progress,” Superintendent Susan Birkenmaier said.

The district’s previous teacher contract expired at the end of June. The teachers have continued to work under the conditions of the previous contract since then.

Union President Michelle Nevin said working without a contract is not unusual and the

ongoing negotiations have not distracted the teachers from their job.

“We continue to teach our students,” she said.

Birkenmaier said meetings between the groups have been more frequent recently.

“Throughout the process, both teams have committed time to a very thoughtful process of understanding each other’s needs and building together a very strong, positive future for District 113A,” Birkenmaier said.

A negotiation session was Sept. 11, followed by negotiations between smaller groups Sept. 16.

The board discussed negotiations during the closed session of its Wednesday meeting, as well.

The meeting started with a public hearing, when the community had a chance to voice opinions about the budget. No one chose to speak.

The booster club presented a check for more than $117,000 to pay for the activities this year.

The Warrior Booster Club started in the 2010-11 school year after the board determined the district no longer could afford to fund extracurricular activities at the school.

LEMONT – The Lemont community raised thousands of dollars during the Sept. 13 Lemont High School football game to benefit the family of Assistant Football Coach Greg Banner.

Banner’s 23-month-old daughter, Stefanie, was diagnosed with nephroblastoma, a cancer of the kidneys that also is referred to as Wilms’ Tumor.

“I was really overwhelmed,” Banner said.

Kathy Young, a math teacher at Lemont High School and the wife of Athletic Director John Young, and Kim Michaelsen, the wife of

Lemont Football Coach Eric Michaelsen, discussed trying to help the Banner family, but it was the Lemont High School community that made their idea work.

“I don’t know how, but it all just fell into place,” Michaelsen said.

During the game, volunteers collected donations in buckets. Money also was raised through a 50/50 raffle and bake sale.

Students showed support for the Banner family by wearing pink and purple – Stefanie’s favorite colors.

Banner, who lives in New Lenox, is in the third year of his second stint with the Lemont High School football team. He previously coached

Mount Assisi Academy introduces new program LEMONT – Mount Assisi Academy in Lemont has started a year-long series of speakers, hands-on activities and group discussions called “Roadmaps.”

The Roadmaps mission is based on the American School Counseling Association focus on academic, emotional and social support for high school girls, according to a news release from the school. The Mount Assisi program incorporates spiritual support within the Roadmaps context.

The first session featured a speaker on dating violence and a police officer teaching self-defense techniques, the release said. Future topics include interviewing for jobs and college, auto mechanics, first aid, a cooking lesson and how to be financially savvy.

Prepare to ‘get hitched’ for a good cause The Lemont High School Educational Foundation’s “Food for Thought” event has drawn hundreds of supporters each year since it was first held in 2007, and its ever-changing themes provide a fun atmosphere for those in attendance.

However, this year’s version – “Food for Thought: Gettin’ Hitched” – is sure to be the most entertaining yet.

Slated for Oct. 19, at Gleneagles Country Club in Lemont, this year’s event may seem like a formal affair with its wedding theme. The event tickets give the look and feel of a wedding invitation and the décor will remind attendees of their wedding days.

However, “Gettin’ Hitched” is no formal event.

Join us at “Food for Thought” and dig deep into your closet for that long-forgotten bridesmaid dress or ill-fitting tuxedo, or see if your wedding dress still fits.

The “reception” will include unlimited food and drink from 7 to 10 p.m. and a live band will play the best – and worst – wedding songs until midnight. Students from the school’s speech team will portray tacky wedding characters and patrons can even dance with the bride during the “dollar dance.”

“Food for Thought” once again will feature valuable, exciting raffle prizes. The winner of the “champagne toast” raffle will walk away with a pair of diamond earrings. Three premier raffle

Water Agency approves new budget

By ALEX SOULIER asoulier@shawmedia.com WOODRIDGE – The Northern Will County Water Agency approved a $662,500 budget during a quarterly meeting Sept. 9 at Woodridge Village Hall.

Entrenched in an ongoing struggle to gain control of the 30-mile Bedford Park transmission pipeline from the privately held American Lake Water Co. and its local subsidiary Illinois American Water, the village of Bolingbrook will shoulder a majority of Northern Will County Water Agency’s budget for the new fiscal year, which started May 1.

Comprised of Bolingbrook, Romeoville, Woodridge, Lemont and Homer Glen, the Northern Will County Water Agency was formed in order to buy and take over the pipeline, which distributes water to residences in the five

of the water pipeline, accusing the company of hiking rates for profit during the last decade.

Eminent domain gives governing bodies power to seize private property without owner’s consent, but the case is not expected to go to court until 2014 or early 2015.

The suit states the threat of additional water rate hikes by the company are “real and imminent.”

“Between 2003 and 2012, water rates have increased by more than 50 percent to unprecedented levels,” according to the lawsuit.

Obtaining ownership of the pipeline from the privately owned water company would “eliminate the profit motive inherent in private ownership,” the lawsuit states. Doing so would allow the nearly 30,000 residential and commercial users “to save substantial money on water over time.”

Filing the suit – which mayors representing the five towns in the water agency unanimously agreed to in December – launches a legal battle that could take years to resolve, a battle Illinois American Water representatives say could cost taxpayers millions.

“The water agency and its members have worked on their takeover plan for almost six years, have spent hundreds of thousands of precious taxpayer dollars on legal fees and consultants, yet they still misrepresent the facts,” said Michael Smyth, senior manager of Illinois American Water.

“These [water rate] increases alleged in the complaint have been caused by rate increases from other water suppliers such as the City of Chicago. These supplier increases are passed along without mark-up or profit by American Lake Water.”

Man struck by car near Cog Hill Wednesday morning SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA LEMONT – A 35-year-old Palos Hills man was hit by a car on South Archer Avenue near Bell Road at 5:25 a.m. Wednesday, according to Cook County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Sophia Ansari.

Ansari said officers responded to a report of a car versus pedestrian. They later learned the man had

been standing in the middle of Archer Avenue when he was struck by a 2004 Crown Victoria.

The man was taken to the hospital but his injuries were not life-threatening, according to the Sheriff’s Office. They did not disclose to which hospital he was transported.

Ansari said it is unknown at this time why the man was standing in the road.

The Cellar Bistro uncorks delectable fare WHEATON – A friend mentioned The Cellar Bistro as a favorite destination, so my dining companion and I decided to drop by one recent weeknight to see for ourselves.

Outdoor seating beckoned, but we opted to sit indoors in the charming dining room.

The bistro’s corner location in downtown Wheaton is ringed by large windows, but, at night, the lighting goes way down to amp up the romantic ambiance. Amid tables and a few banquettes, we selected a hightop at a window to oversee the burgundy-red room and an attractively backlit bar, where stemware and wine bottles glimmer.

After viewing the menu’s expansive wine list, it’s easy to see why the word “cellar” is part of the bistro’s name. The full bar also features a few craft beers and alternates two on tap.

We opened with mushroom brie soup, accompanied by baguette slices. It was delectably savory, with a hint of sherry, and finely minced mushrooms in a creamy soup that tasted more complex with every spoonful.

The Indians fell to 1-2 with a 28-14 home loss against conference crossover Richards last Friday despite a promising defensive effort.

Coach Eric Michaelsen’s squad now will likely have to go 5-1 the rest of the way to finish 6-3 and secure a playoff spot, though a 4-2 finish would put them on the bubble at 5-4. As he put it, the Indians’ “backs are against the wall.”

Still, he was content with his team’s effort against Richards.

“I was real happy with the effort that the kids gave,” Michaelsen said after the game.

“But we’re still making too many mistakes on the field.”

It was the first time in six years Richards (3-0) knocked off Lemont. The Indians defeated the Bulldogs in the second round of last year’s IHSA playoffs, 23-19.

It was Richards’ skill position athletes who proved to be too much for Lemont in last week’s contest, led by quarterback Hasan Muhammad-Rogers and his three touchdowns through the air.

Muhammed-Rogers’ third TD of the night sealed the win with 2:43 left.

With the Indians trailing 20-14 and looking to get the ball back with just over two minutes left, the Bulldogs’ quarterback lofted a pass into the left side of the end zone on a third-and-21 play. Wide receiver Dedrick Shannon made the grab, leaping over two Lemont defenders for the 34-yard touchdown. A two-point conversion gave Richards the two-touchdown lead.

“That’s a really good team, but if we take away our mistakes, I think we’re right there with them.”

Lemont never led the contest but hung around on thanks in part to 11 penalties flagged against Richards and five sacks of Muhammed-Rogers.

Sophomore quarterback Chris Thompson, who took over after halftime of the Indians’ first game, showed some growth in the game but his youth was evident.

“I think he’s doing a really nice job for us,” Michaelsen said. “He’s still learning and he’s going to make mistakes, but he’s also going to make some really nice plays for us, too.”

The Lemont defense was led by senior defensive lineman Andrew Miller with 2½ sacks.

Miller was happy with his unit’s effort.

“We’re getting better every week,” Miller said. “It [stinks] to lose but coming out here and playing like that feels better than last week.”

“I feel our backs are against the wall but I am not worried,” Miller said. “It didn’t happen tonight but I feel like we’re building and the young guys are getting better and we’ll get better as we go.”

Bears face wounded, desperate Steelers team Hub Arkush I suppose it would be clever to say you really have to be wary of a wounded Steeler, and the Pittsburgh Steelers at 0-2 will be all of that when the Bears come calling Sunday night.

But the truth is I’m not entirely sure what a Steeler is? My best guess is they just represent steelworkers in Pittsburgh, and while I’m sure those guys are tough, I’m pretty sure I’d rather wrestle a Steeler than a Bear.

Still, this is the first time a Mike Tomlin-coached team has been two games under .500, and they’ll kick off the game knowing a win here puts them right back in the middle of the AFC North chase with all four clubs stumbling out of the gate.

These Steelers do have their issues, but they’re just four seasons removed from their last Super Bowl title and they will be a desperate bunch when

the Bears get to Pittsburgh.

The biggest challenge Pittsburgh offers is at quarterback, where Ben Roethlisberger already has won two Super Bowls for them – Tom Brady and Eli Manning are the only other active QBs with more than one ring – and is as dangerous extending plays in the pocket as anyone in the game.

Big Ben is particularly scary when his protection breaks down and he starts improvising. Bears defenders will have to hold their coverage in pass defense much longer than they do against most opponents, and with the problems they’ve had pressuring quarterbacks it can make for an awfully long night.

One factor in the Bears favor, however, is Pittsburgh is mediocre at best at most of the skill positions on offense, and the running game in particular is as weak as any Steeler team in recent memory.

Pittsburgh drafted Le’Veon Bell in the second round after allowing former No. 1 pick Rashard Mendenhall to leave via free agency and then sur-

prised many by releasing last year’s leading rusher, Jonathan Dwyer, in training camp.

When Bell went down with a foot injury – he’ll be sidelined at least three more weeks – the Steelers were forced to trade with the Cowboys to bring in Felix Jones. After sitting out the opener, Jones rushed 10 times for 37 yards on Monday night in Cincinnati and will probably be Pittsburgh’s main ball carrier versus the Bears.

Emmanuel Sanders, Antonio Brown and Jerricho Cotchery are the primary receivers but none match up particularly well with the Bears corners.

Heath Miller is a quality tight end but is still not 100 percent after a serious knee injury last year, and backups David Johnson, David Paulson and Michael Palmer really don’t scare anyone. This is another big benefit to the Bears, whose safeties have struggled in coverage to date.

Pittsburgh also continues to struggle on the offensive line, and their best player, Maurkice Pouncey, is through

Completing the puzzle on that side of the ball, the Twitterverse was ablaze early in the Bengals game with insiders and amateurs alike trying to figure out whether or not Todd Haley even had a game plan and, if so, what it was.

Defensively, the Steelers still are very good against the run, and they love to get after the quarterback.

But the loss of veteran Larry Foote for the season in the opener versus Tennessee, along with the releases in the offseason of James Harrison and Casey Hampton, appear to have left a real leadership void.

Troy Polamalu is still on the backend at safety, but he appears to have lost half a step; and Ryan Clark is better against the run than the pass at the other safety.

This will be the Bears and Marc Trestman’s new offense’s first look at a 3-4 defense. For Pittsburgh it revolves around the linebackers, and LaMarr Woodley and Lawrence Timmons are both still extremely active.

Is there any more useless fantasy information – other than this column, of course – than the “start ’em or sit ’em” feature? Seriously, how can you definitively advise a fantasy owner to start or sit a certain player without knowing the specifics of that owner’s roster and league format?

If you play in an eightteam league, the bar for a “start” is set a lot higher than if you play in a 12-team league. Other factors, such as point systems and injuries, make it impossible to abjectly declare a player a “start” or a “sit.” Still, we watch the NFL Network scroll and wait to see the names of our players.

We rejoice when they are declared a “start” and cringe when they are a “sit.” I understand that this is intended

more of a thumbs up/thumbs down, but I’ve encountered many newer fantasy players who take the advice literally.

Weekly point projections also are flawed and tend to confuse newer owners. My wife pointed out to me that one of her backs was projected to score seven points and another was projected for 14. She figured it was a no-brainer. However, if you broke down the projection, they were probably predicting 70-some yards and no TD for the one back and 80-some and one TD for the other. If only life were that simple.

The yardage makes sense, but no one can accurately predict the intangibles that result in one player scoring and another getting shut out. Perhaps a more useful tool would be a yardage projection along with the estimated chance of scoring a TD. And once more for clarifi-

Currently in the midst of their toughest stretch of the schedule, the squad needs a similar effort this time around against South Suburban Blue conference foe Oak Forest, a team that will have revenge on its mind.

A year ago, Lemont knocked off the Bengals twice by a combined 10 points, including a 21-14 postseason victory in the Class 6A quarterfinals.

In fact, the Indians now have won the last eight meetings dating back to 2007.

Oak Forest comes in with a 2-1 mark after defeating Thornton Fractional South, 28-21, in Week 3.

The Bengals also topped Phoenix Military Academy of Chicago, 40-0, in the first game of the season.

Although Lemont lost its lone state qualifier, Aaron Oldanie, to graduation, the Indians return four of their top seven from a year ago in Luke Heatherington, Evan Ganzer, Andrew Kramer and Conner Brandt.

Lemont placed seventh in the Wheaton Academy Class 2A sectional last year, falling two spots short of advancing to state. The Indians were two points from sixth-place and 25 from the top-five.

“Like any season, we face the challenge of injuries and maintaining consistency,” DeGuzman said. “However, with proper training and mental focus, I am confident that we can reach our goals.”

Outlook: A year ago, Lemont finished one place away from advancing to the state meet after coming in sixth at the loaded Wheaton Academy sectional, which featured three out of the top four teams in Class 2A.

This time around, the Indians return four of the seven runners who competed in the 2012 state series, including state qualifier Claire Gagen.

The sophomore placed 54th a year ago.

In addition to state aspirations, Lemont will look to repeat as South Suburban Blue conference champions.

“The girls are focused and already starting to see the results of our summer training,” coach Tim Plotke said.

“They are a highly-motivated group and aren’t afraid [to work hard]. They understand how they need to train and race to be successful and they are excited about this year’s journey.”

The Indians also beat Riverside-Brookfield, 171-215, in a dual meet Monday as Lynn carded a 38.

GIRLS SWIMMING Lemont Competing in a dual meet with Oak Lawn on Tuesday, Lemont’s Sarah Decesare captured the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:26.59 while teammate Kennedy Pawell finished as the runner-up.

Bridget Doherty won the 200 individual medley in 2:36.30, Erin Bendle placed first in the 100 freestyle

with a clocking of 1:02.01, and Annette Lesnicki was victorious in the 500 freestyle in 6:04.63.

Lesnick also was the runner-up in the 50 freestyle, Decesare was second in the 500 freestyle and Bendle came in second in the 100 backstroke.

The 200 freestyle relay of Doherty, Sarah Ferriter, Anna Ignarski and Sarah Oprezedeck won in 1:58.84.

FOOTBALL Lemont Lemont’s matchup on the gridiron with Oak Forest tonight will serve as Comcast Channel 100’s Game of the Week. The contest is set to kick off at 7 p.m.
