BARRINGTON – Barrington Life is all over the board this week. But that’s what makes us fun, right?

After integrating more technology into Barrington area schools, District 220 is partnering with Comcast and Netgear to make sure no student is at a disadvantage.

Project Horsepower will provide at-home Internet for families in need, allowing students to conduct research at home, contact teachers outside of school, and work more closely with their parents.

Having spent the past 17 years of my life in school, I watched my assignments become more computer-based. In elementary school, the 30 minutes of class time spent in the library for group projects was merely enough time to log onto a computer and talk with your group.

Then, middle school was full of book reports and essays that I would research

High school was all about college preparation and grade maintenance. I monitored my classes online with my parents and often emailed teachers homework questions after school or during weekends. I researched different colleges and tailored acceptance essays, emailing back and forth with admissions offices and my high school adviser.

Needless to say, I would have been less efficient in all levels of my schooling if I had not been able to access the Internet at home. I think it’s great that Barrington School District 220 has found

a way to bridge the divide between its students, and I wish them all the best as they take advantage of this opportunity.

I also learned a lot about an annual Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital tradition – the gala fundraiser, the details of which are on page 14. This black-tie event might sound like a fun excuse to dress up and enjoy some Nashville-themed food and music. And who wouldn’t enjoy that? But let me tell you it’s much, much more.

The dinner gala has raised more than $2.5 million for the hospital, and the planning committee consists of volunteers who are making a stand for something they believe in – their local hospital.

This is a special year for gala committee members and attendees, as proceeds will benefit the hospital’s largest renovation in history.

Barrington Life is excited to learn more about this modernization project during an official ground breaking in early October.

Carol is the name of Ruth Grigson’s mother-inlaw, who started the Carol & Company business in Fredricksburg, Va., in 2003. She is now retired but helps Grigson behind-the-scenes as a consultant to Ruth’s store, located in the Barrington Commons and “grandma extraordinaire” to her children.

Grigson told Barrington Life about the family shop’s transition from Virginia to Texas and now, to Barrington. She is busy preparing for St. Charles servingware designer Nora Fleming to come sign platters at a special in-house appearance Nov. 14.

Carol & Company started as your mother-in-law’s business. How did you happen to take over? What intrigued you with the gift and accessory business?

When I started having children eight years ago, I was unhappy with my position working in the health-care field. However, I wanted to continue working part time. I loved helping my mother-inlaw with her shop in Texas every time we went to visit. So I started a branch of Carol & Company here in the Chicago suburbs. We began by selling jewelry and gifts at craft shows and outdoor markets on the weekends. I loved interacting with the customers at the shows and seeing them find that special gift for someone.

What make this a good area for a family-owned boutique?

I love that the people of this town shop locally and get to know the small-business owners.

What can your customers find online?

The last three years we have primarily been an online retailer, so about 90 percent of all our products can be purchased online. In fact, a customers can purchase online and pick up in the store.

‘It’s a twin thing’

By STEPHANIE KOHL Barrington Life Contributor BARRINGTON – With due dates nearly three weeks apart, the McCormack twins didn’t think they would have to worry about their babies sharing the same birthday.

The babies though, came close to just that. Mundelein resident Laura McCormack, 25, gave birth to son Caleb Ryan Haerle at 5:41 p.m.

Sept. 5.

Her twin sister, Kelly McCormack of Lake Zurich, gave birth to son James Patrick Connolly at 2:15 a.m.

Sept. 6.

Both babies were born at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington. The fraternal twin sisters even used the same doctor, Randy Zimmerman.

With a Sept. 1 due date and still no baby, Laura and the baby’s father, Chris Haerle, decided to induce labor and chose Sept. 5 as the delivery date.

They arrived at the hospital early that morning and proceeded as scheduled.

That same morning, Kelly went to the doctor complaining of pain and bleeding.

Her doctor advised her to go to the hospital for observation.

“Everyone told me I was feeling [Laura’s] labor pains and I was like, ‘No, I don’t think so,’ ” Kelly said.

The twins’ mother, Maureen McCormack of Lake Zurich, knew about Laura’s scheduled induction but was caught by surprise when she got a text about Kelly being admitted.

“And I thought, ‘Oh God, not the two of them at once,’ ” she said with a laugh. “It’s a twin thing.”

After being monitored for a couple hours, hospital staff determined Kelly would have her baby then and there. She and the child’s father, Matthew Connolly, got ready to

welcome their little boy. “[Kelly] came in before my epidural,” Laura said. “...

We were hoping for separate birthdays.”

It was a busy several hours for Maureen. After leaving work early to be with Laura, she found herself running between hospital rooms to be with both of her daughters.

“I just happened to go back and forth and be there with the both of them [when the babies arrived],” Maureen said. “I just can’t explain the feeling.”

Throughout their pregnancies, the sisters discussed what they were facing. While Laura had a relatively routine pregnancy, Kelly’s was a bit tougher, and she was hospitalized for dehydration.

“It was nice to have someone to talk to about what was going on,” Laura said. “My pregnancy was easy compared to hers. I was due two weeks before her, so I was always telling her what was going to happen at her appointments.”

The sisters hope their babies are close as cousins, and Laura said the two already are thinking about doing some things together for the babies.

She added it will help the boys know how to share better.

Now that each mom, dad and baby are each settled at their own homes – Laura in Mundelein and Kelly at home with her parents in Lake Zurich – they are getting used to the new normal.

“Having him and watching him change each day [has been the best],” Kelly said.

Maureen, too, said it has been an adjustment. The family also has Maureen’s mother at home.

“It’s a little hectic right now,” she said. “We have four generations under one roof right now.”

GOP governor candidates coming to Barrington area

By TARAH THORNE tthorne@shawmedia.com BARRINGTON – All four announced Republican candidates for Illinois governor are set to participate in a series of open forums in the Barrington area, Cuba Township Republicans announced last week.

Community members are invited to meet and engage with the Republican candidates who will be on the March 18, 2014, primary ballot.

This four-stop series will kick off at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25, with state Sen. Kirk Dillard at Chessie’s/111 Bar & Grill in Barrington.

State Sen. Bill Brady will be at McGonigal’s Pub on Wednesday, Oct. 9.

Businessman Bruce Rauner will be at Lake Barrington Shores recreation center on Sunday, Oct. 13.

Illinois Treasurer Dan Rutherford will be at Zaza’s Tavola Italiana in Lake Barrington on Oct. 24.

Cuba Township Republicans Chairman Bruce Sauer said these types of forums have been held in previous years, but were usually closer to the election. Sauer said the committee felt it was important to engage the community early-on for this election by offering no-cost forums at easy-to-access locations with no limit on attendance.

The gatherings are sponsored by the Cuba Township Republicans as a public service to help educate voters on the candidates, their policy positions, and their ideas for Illinois.

According to the Cuba Township Republicans, 78 percent of Cuba Township registered voters cast ballots in the 2012 general election.

“Illinois is facing serious challenges, and we need a new governor to lead the state out of this mess,” Sauer said.

District 220 set to provide at-home Internet Project Horsepower will provide web service to 1,500 students in need

By TARAH THORNE tthorne@shawmedia.com BARRINGTON – The Barrington 220 school district has announced a plan to take newly implemented technology a step further – and with more horsepower than before.

A 24-month home Internet pilot initiative known as Project Horsepower was publicly introduced Sept. 10 during a news conference at Barrington Middle School Prairie Campus. This program is designed to provide students from the district’s 700 low-income households – roughly 1,500 students – with Internet access and Wi-Fi at home, thanks to a partnership with Comcast, Netgear and the Barrington Area Development Council.

Barrington 220 Superintendent Tom Leonard said the program will extend the students’ educational experience by allowing them to research school projects, access teachers and school work remotely, and allow their parents to monitor their progress.

“For low-income qualifying families, Project Horsepower extends learning well beyond school walls and helps parents play a more active role in their children’s education,” Leonard said.

Barrington 220 will provide students from low-income families who qualify for the federal free and reduced lunch program with Comcast’s “Internet Essentials” broadband Internet service at home and a wireless router donated by Netgear – all at no cost to the families.

Robin Seldon, chief marketing officer for Netgear, said the California-based networking product company and District 220 have been planning the pilot program for about six months. The Netgear-provided Wi-Fi boxes will allow families with more than one child to access the Internet at the same time.

In addition to Project Horsepower, District 220 will during the next 18 months provide all middle and highschool students with laptop computers and all elementary students with iPads. All mid-

dle school students have laptops, but only 600 high school students have been equipped with this technology.

Air through his Spanish honors course.

“It lets me communicate with my teachers outside of school and do projects online,” Dolan said. “If I didn’t have Internet at home, I

would feel like I only had half of a laptop.”

Dolan noted that at-home Internet allows him to manage his grades online with his parents.

“Internet Essentials” is Comcast’s low-cost broadband service that provides qualified families who have at least one child participating in the National School Lunch Program with Internet service for $9.95 each month, plus tax. Families have an option to purchase a computer for $150. Any Barrington-area families currently subscribed to this service would have had to consult Comcast on their own.

Cindy Jaskowiak, assistant superintendent of Barrington 220 educational programs and assessment, said the Barrington Educational Foundation will cover the costs of the pre-existing Comcast program, and it will be available year-round to Barrington 220 families. Applications will be taken in October and Internet will be installed for free by the end of this semester.

Bret Perkins of Comcast said this is the Internet provider’s first districtwide partnership and the hope is to set a model that will be closely followed throughout the country.

Once the technology initiatives are complete, Barrington 220 will be one of the first K-12 school districts in the country to provide computers and tablets to 100 percent of its students.

Nearly 17 percent of Barrington 220’s students qualify for Project Horsepower. Jack Schaefer, president of the Barrington Area Development Council, said the pilot program is just what the district needs to compliment provided laptops.

“We can’t create a situation where a good portion of the population is left unconnected,” Schaefer said.

The women’s team won the event’s “Battle of the Sexes” polo match and Coberon Chronos Consulting, an international recruitment group from Chicago, won the LeCompte-Kalaway Cup. They competed against three teams of four players each.

SUZANNE CORR ACTING CHAMBER DIRECTOR Barrington Life is excited to welcome Suzanne Corr to the Barrington Area Chamber of Commerce. Corr has been hired as the new acting Barrington Chamber president and is expected to officially accept the position as president and CEO in December.

Corr answered some questions for Barrington Life about her business experience and most recent job, spending nine years as executive director for the Cary Grove Area Chamber of Commerce.

What sort of changes are happening within the Barrington Area Chamber of Commerce and how are you managing this transition?

Every new leader brings their own focus and passion.

I am so excited and proud to be serving Barrington-area businesses. One high priority on my agenda is taking a look at all our events, our website, our activities and all our communications and seeing how we can be more member focused. I am also interested in developing more educational, professional development and skill-building programs to help members succeed. You will find me on the streets as often as I can be. I want to get out and meet the membership.

What led to your transition from Cary Grove to Barrington? How long did you work for the Cary Grove Area Chamber?

What were your duties there?

I served the Cary Grove Area Chamber for nine years, doubling its membership to more than 500 – making it the third largest chamber in McHenry County. As executive director, I ran the chamber’s business, programs, activities, finances, staff and more. I was responsible for building relationships with village and community lead-

ers and local businesses.

Are you comfortable with the Barrington community? What do you find unique about this area?

I have worked, shopped and dined in the Barrington community for many years. I worked for a public relations agency in Barrington for 12 years. During that time, my “me” time was frequenting the downtown Barrington area, and making quick trips to Deer Park and other unique shopping and dining destinations. I love the charm of the Barrington area and the great shopping choices. My daughter has worked many years at the Arboretum of South Barrington, and Barrington is unique because it has an eclectic mix of creative entrepreneurs and business owners who are successful and cover a wide variety of industries.

You started your professional life in medical public relations. What experience did you gain that you can relate to your chamber role?

My early career was great training for honing my writing skills, developing story ideas, and putting together creative programs that enabled clients to increase exposure, loyalty and market share. It taught me how to take

Summer in Barrington has been eventful with a lot of chamber-sponsored entertainment.

What can we expect for fall and winter?

We certainly have some great events coming up, such as “After Hours” networking event Sept.17 at BMO Harris Bank. Tastefest is a great fall event, so buy your tickets for Oct. 17. Our Women’s Biz Net is planning a Barrington Bliss Holiday Luncheon at the Onion Pub on Nov. 14. We encourage guests to join us and learn more about the Chamber and its resources. Barrington seems to emphasize local sustainability with farmers’ markets and many independent businesses. What do you find intriguing about this heritage?

Fostering and nurturing home-grown businesses as well as local producers is part

of the big picture of local sustainability. Spending dollars in your community, supporting local business owners and local farmers is an investment in achieving a thriving community. I was dedicated to that as well in Cary. I focused heavily on driving consumers to rely on our chamber website and the chamber offices as the “go-to” place for information on local resources. I also had a leading role in creating the Cary Farmers Market.

What do you like to do outside of work?

Cooking and baking – although it has become less needed as my kids are off to college. I threaten them that when they start their families, it’s going to be Sunday night at mom’s for dinner every week!

I also love boating. My favorite local spot is Lake Geneva.

You just missed Sidewalk Sale Days. Or did you?

What have been some of your favorite shopping stops in Barrington?

I have been going to Sidewalk Sale Days for many years. It’s my secret to coming up with so many great holiday gifts. It’s hard to pick favorites in downtown

Barrington. Each store has its own charm.

Did you have a chance to talk to retiring president Janet Meyer?

I have known Janet for many years, working with her on several projects and connecting at various meetings for chamber executives.

She is the utmost professional and wished me much luck, encouraging me to put my own mark on the position, and I wish her much happiness and fulfillment in her retirement.

Do you plan on collaborating with any of the village staff or neighboring chambers?

Building relationships with the village is one of my highest priorities. We share many of the same goals – to see our communities thrive and prosper and local businesses succeed. I look forward to meeting the key players and letting them know we are here to serve. I am interested in their input and ideas and some historical perspective. I hope we can partner on new projects and teaming up with other chambers is a must to expand the opportunities for our own members.

Alexis Portugal, president of the Noon Rotary Club, said officials of these departments risk their personal safety every day when Barrington-area residents are in need.

“Our club adheres to the Rotary motto of ‘service above self,’ which also characterizes these brave men

and women who selflessly protect our communities,” Portugal said.

The event began with a light lunch from Heinen’s Fine Foods, and Rotarians acknowledged police Chief Dave Dorn, fire Chief Jim Arie, village officials Karen Darch and Jeff Lawler, as well as 25 police, fire, EMT and administrative staff.

An evening in Nashville benefits hospital Southern theme embraced for event to raise funds, friends for Good Shepherd

By TARAH THORNE tthorne@shawmedia.com BARRINGTON – Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital is ready to kick off its cowboy boots with excitement for a modernization project – and it might even call for a little bourbon.

On Saturday, Sept. 21, several hundred guests representing civic, corporate and social communities in the northwest suburban and Chicago area are set to attend the hospital’s seventh annual fundraising gala at the Stonegate Conference & Banquet Centre in Hoffman Estates.

Chuck Huttinger, co-chairman of the 2013 Gala Committee, said that with “glitz, glamour and cowboy boots,” the evening will be screaming

Nashville from the moment guests arrive.

“It is a black-tie gala, but we want to attract a wider demographic this year,” Huttinger said. “The orchestra will play a range of music, including country.”

Nashville, Tenn., is known as Music City, USA, and the upcoming Good Shepherd dinner gala will be an evening full of just that – music.

Huttinger said the gala will begin with music outside upon guests’ arrival, leading into a country band that will play during the indoor cocktail and bourbon-tasting party, and continue with music being played intermittently during dinner.

And the music won’t be the only taste of country for the gala’s guests.

“Nashville has grown as a cultural center, so we will incorporate a more Southern-style cooking for our dinner,” Huttinger said.

Since 1997, the gala has raised more than $2.5 million for the hospital, selling roughly 400 tickets each year.

Jeanne Varwig, Gala Committee member and former chairwoman, said that Huttinger’s role of co-chairing with Good Shepherd physician Dr. Peter Wuertz adds a new dimension to a fundraiser that has historically been organized by women.

“These two guys are leading by example, showing that the hospital is a good investment,” Varwig said. “People want to live active and healthy lives and the hospital helps them get there.”

“I don’t think people realize what a great hospital we have right here in Barrington.

Each year, the Gala Committee decides how to raise funds at the event. More than 100 bottles of wine will be sold at the gala through a silent auction where guests can choose to “buy it now” like an eBay bid, drinking the wine with dinner, or purchase a bottle or case to take home. Additionally, a one-carat diamond necklace from Long Jewelers in Barrington will be raffled off.

Previous themes have ranged from oceanic to red carpet to James Bond 007.

The Nashville theme brings another unique raffle item – a pre-paid package for a two-person trip to the American Country Music Awards.

But planning for the hospital’s largest annual fundraiser has been no walk down the red carpet.

“I’ve had to dedicate a fair amount of time to make sure everything runs properly,” Huttinger said. “It’s a time commitment to balance the gala with four children and a full-time job outside of volunteering with the hospital.”

Varwig said the Gala Committee’s dedication shows just how important the event is for the community, and the dinner invite is open to anyone – both long- and short-term hospital supporters.

“We work as a team with interesting, smart, fun people,” Varwig said. “It’s challenging, but we prioritize our busy lives and end up

accomplishing a lot. Everyone leaves the gala feeling good about it.”

Last year, the Gala Committee sold more than 350 tickets, raising $400,000 for the hospital and used the proceeds to apply for Magnet Recognition in nursing – a costly, multiyear process organized by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

Come early October, the Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital will be breaking ground on its largest renovation in history with modernized, private rooms, expanded intensive care and operating rooms, state-ofthe-art technologies, green features and more.

“It’s most rewarding to have people leave the gala with a greater understanding of what this hospital means to the community,” Huttinger said. “No one needs to travel downtown for exceptional care.”

‘For so long we’ve been praying for one another’ Barrington church’s partnership with Sudanese diocese going strong

By TRACY GRUEN Barrington Life contributor BARRINGTON – As Bishop Joseph Garang Atem visits the area from Sudan, he is emphasizing the importance of a special partnership and commitment between St. Mi- Bishop chael’s Episco- Garang Atem pal Church in Barrington and the Diocese of Renk in the Episcopal Church of Sudan.

It began in 1998, when Jackie Kraus of Barrington was doing global mission work in Virginia and met Bishop Daniel Deng Bul from the Diocese of Renk in Sudan, who was studying at the Virginia Theological Seminary.

When people from the Unit-

ed States asked him about the killings in Sudan due to the religious civil war, he told them to “come and see, and then you’ll know what to do.”

So that’s exactly what Kraus and six other people from Virginia decided to do.

“We were the first Americans to visit Renk,” Kraus said. “We were on a fact-finding mission to learn and see for ourselves what was going on. We were watched everywhere we went.”

At first, the government gave them a hard time and kept demanding more photos from them, but eventually they were allowed access into Renk. Kraus said they met many people who told them stories about their villages being burned.

“Some of them didn’t know if their families were dead or alive,” Kraus said.

Kraus said it was a touching experience at a local school when 50 kids in a classroom without windows sang a song to them that they learned in English.

“The bishop and the staff went through tremendous trouble to make our trip possible,” Kraus said.

She remembers that they traveled in an SUV that had a gas stove and a cook who made eggs and other American food just for them.

In 1998, a covenant of a re-

lationship between the Diocese of Renk in Sudan and St. Michael’s Episcopal Church in Barrington was signed. The commitment and partnership, which involves praying for one another and helping each other, is still going strong.

For the past few years, St. Michael’s Episcopal of Barrington has been supporting the Renk Theological College, which trains future church leaders of diocesan churches, schools and clinics.

“It’s been sustained for 15 years and keeps growing; that’s what is remarkable about it,” said Patrick Ray-

mond, rector of St. Michael’s in Barrington.

Bishop Atem has been visiting St. Michael’s in Barrington for the past few years.

“We have him return every year to remind us of our covenant,” Kraus said.

She said the parish is fortunate to be in a relationship with truly faithful church leaders.

“For so long we’ve been praying for one another,” Bishop Atem said. “It gives us hope that things are going well.”

St. Michael’s was the first church to start a relationship with Renk, and since that time other churches in the area have also developed partnerships with churches in Renk.

An event will be held Sept.

28 at St. Michael’s with proceeds used to promote education, peace and independence in Renk.

By TARAH THORNE tthorne@shawmedia.com BARRINGTON – Village trustees earlier this month began to hear public opinion about whether to allow video gambling in Barrington’s bars and restaurants.

During the Sept., 9 meeting, the Barrington Village Board hosted public discussion on 2009 state legislation that allows video gambling.

Village Manager Jeff Lawler said the village received a couple of emails immediately after the state law was passed, but did not hear much until officials were approached recently by Barrington business owners who expressed an interest in acquiring video gaming terminals.

Blanchard, where she explained the process for a business wishing to acquire a video gambling license. Lawler said the board’s decision on a video gambling ordinance wouldn’t be made until October.

Municipalities are allowed to opt out of the video gambling legislation, meaning they can decide against allowing video gaming machines inside their borders.

Business owners such as Bryan McGonigal of McGonigal’s Pub have urged trustees to allow video gaming, stating that customers may

dine elsewhere in video gambling-approved communities such as Fox River Grove, East Dundee, Hoffman Estates and unincorporated Lake County.

Only businesses with liquor licenses are eligible to have up to five gaming terminals per establishment. The state gets 25 percent of the revenue from each terminal, while the municipality gets 5 percent. The machine operator and establishment each receive roughly 35 percent of the terminal’s revenue.

Those against the proposed ordinance have expressed concern about gambling addiction.

By DAN VASKO For Barrington Life It’s the Mid-Suburban East versus the Mid-Suburban West this week as the Buffalo Grove Bison (1-2) host the Barrington Broncos (3-0).

Buffalo Grove is coming off of two consecutive losses, while the Broncos remain undefeated despite playing just one home game.

Barrington began the season with two straight road games, and after last week’s home opener, they take to the road once again.

The Broncos have shown poise on the road thus far this season. On the offensive side of the ball, the Broncos seem to be clicking on all cylinders.

The no-huddle has proven to disorient defenses while keeping them on their toes.

Quarterback Daniel Kubiuk has showcased great chemistry with his veteran receivers, and has used his legs as well to keep drives alive.

“I think we’re doing really well … a lot of credit to the receivers, they’re doing a great job getting open,” Kubiuk said.

The Bronco offense is averaging 33 points a game and is looking to have another big game against a Buffalo Grove defense that has given up 25 points a game.

The key to success will be Barrington’s ability to maintain a balanced offense and stick with the run game early to try to open up big plays down the field.

On defense, the Broncos have stepped up to the challenge so far this season. A squad that lost numerous

standouts to graduation has shown that hard work and dedication always pays off.

The defensive front four have been nothing short of dominant, creating havoc in the backfield.

Rolling Meadows quarterback Bobby Suchecki was almost always in the shotgun formation last week, yet he was sacked five times and hit another 17. Buffalo Grove takes snaps from under center often.

“The defense is filled with a lot of solid football players that together as one, fly around to the ball. Certainly we’re excited about that and we’re just going to need to continue to keep pushing and keep trying to get better,” head coach Joe Sanchez said.

Kickoff is set for about 7 p.m. at Buffalo Grove.

Special teams lead Broncos to win The Barrington Broncos beat the Rolling Meadows Mustangs, 48-28, last Thursday in their home opener.

It was a slow start for Barrington, which fell behind 14-0 early in the first quarter, but rallied back for the win.

The Broncos comeback didn’t come from the offense, or even the defense.

It was the special teams that made two of the biggest, game-changing plays of the evening.

After two consecutive three and outs, the Mustangs were set to punt from their own 40-yard line and would soon meet their fate.

Broncos defensive end Colin Costagna blocked the

punt and made a key block for Dan Hanley, who picked up the ball and ran into the end zone to tie the score.

Another three and out just moments later had Rolling Meadows punting from deep in its own territory. It was deja vu for the Mustangs, as the Broncos blocked the punt and the ball was recovered in the end zone by Mark Bornhofen to put Barrington up, 21-14.

“Those two special teams plays were huge…that was a huge momentum swing for us,” head coach Joe Sanchez said.

Costagna anchored Barrington’s front four, sacking Mustang quarterback Bobby Suchecki three times.

Bears face wounded, desperate Steelers team Hub Arkush I suppose it would be clever to say you really have to be wary of a wounded Steeler, and the Pittsburgh Steelers at 0-2 will be all of that when the Bears come calling Sunday night.

But the truth is I’m not entirely sure what a Steeler is? My best guess is they just represent steelworkers in Pittsburgh, and while I’m sure those guys are tough, I’m pretty sure I’d rather wrestle a Steeler than a Bear.

Still, this is the first time a Mike Tomlin-coached team has been two games under .500, and they’ll kick off the game knowing a win here puts them right back in the middle of the AFC North chase with all four clubs stumbling out of the gate.

These Steelers do have their issues, but they’re just four seasons removed from their last Super Bowl title and they will be a desperate bunch when

the Bears get to Pittsburgh.

The biggest challenge Pittsburgh offers is at quarterback, where Ben Roethlisberger already has won two Super Bowls for them – Tom Brady and Eli Manning are the only other active QBs with more than one ring – and is as dangerous extending plays in the pocket as anyone in the game.

Big Ben is particularly scary when his protection breaks down and he starts improvising. Bears defenders will have to hold their coverage in pass defense much longer than they do against most opponents, and with the problems they’ve had pressuring quarterbacks it can make for an awfully long night.

One factor in the Bears favor, however, is Pittsburgh is mediocre at best at most of the skill positions on offense, and the running game in particular is as weak as any Steeler team in recent memory.

Pittsburgh drafted Le’Veon Bell in the second round after allowing former No. 1 pick Rashard Mendenhall to leave via free agency and then sur-

prised many by releasing last year’s leading rusher, Jonathan Dwyer, in training camp.

When Bell went down with a foot injury – he’ll be sidelined at least three more weeks – the Steelers were forced to trade with the Cowboys to bring in Felix Jones. After sitting out the opener, Jones rushed 10 times for 37 yards on Monday night in Cincinnati and will probably be Pittsburgh’s main ball carrier versus the Bears.

Emmanuel Sanders, Antonio Brown and Jerricho Cotchery are the primary receivers but none match up particularly well with the Bears corners.

Heath Miller is a quality tight end but is still not 100 percent after a serious knee injury last year, and backups David Johnson, David Paulson and Michael Palmer really don’t scare anyone. This is another big benefit to the Bears, whose safeties have struggled in coverage to date.

Pittsburgh also continues to struggle on the offensive line, and their best player, Maurkice Pouncey, is through

for the year after tearing up his knee.

Completing the puzzle on that side of the ball, the Twitterverse was ablaze early in the Bengals game with insiders and amateurs alike trying to figure out whether or not Todd Haley even had a game plan and, if so, what it was.

Defensively, the Steelers still are very good against the run, and they love to get after the quarterback.

But the loss of veteran Larry Foote for the season in the opener versus Tennessee, along with the releases in the offseason of James Harrison and Casey Hampton, appear to have left a real leadership void.

Troy Polamalu is still on the backend at safety, but he appears to have lost half a step; and Ryan Clark is better against the run than the pass at the other safety.

This will be the Bears and Marc Trestman’s new offense’s first look at a 3-4 defense. For Pittsburgh it revolves around the linebackers, and LaMarr Woodley and Lawrence Timmons are both still extremely active.

By J.C. TALON Fantasy Football columnist Is there any more useless fantasy information – other than this column, of course – than the “start ’em or sit ’em” feature? Seriously, how can you definitively advise a fantasy owner to start or sit a certain player without knowing the specifics of that owner’s roster and league format?

If you play in an eightteam league, the bar for a “start” is set a lot higher than if you play in a 12-team league. Other factors, such as point systems and injuries, make it impossible to abjectly declare a player a “start” or a “sit.” Still, we watch the NFL Network scroll and wait to see the names of our players.

We rejoice when they are declared a “start” and cringe when they are a “sit.” I understand that this is intended

more of a thumbs up/thumbs down, but I’ve encountered many newer fantasy players who take the advice literally.

Weekly point projections also are flawed and tend to confuse newer owners. My wife pointed out to me that one of her backs was projected to score seven points and another was projected for 14. She figured it was a no-brainer. However, if you broke down the projection, they were probably predicting 70-some yards and no TD for the one back and 80-some and one TD for the other. If only life were that simple.

The yardage makes sense, but no one can accurately predict the intangibles that result in one player scoring and another getting shut out. Perhaps a more useful tool would be a yardage projection along with the estimated chance of scoring a TD. And once more for clarifi-

The value of productive running backs in fantasy football is unquestioned.

The main point of the last couple of columns was that quarterbacks and receivers are also important. With every expert urging owners to draft running backs early, we felt there would be some good bargains at quarterback and receiver. Specifically, we said that Aaron Rodgers was going too late in most drafts.

And that’s the last time we need to visit that topic.

On to week three …

I guess this is an obvious one, but Seattle is going to crush the hapless Jaguars.

Some might worry about a letdown after their big win over the 49ers, but this is too big of a mismatch for that to matter. I won’t insult your intelligence with the obvious recommendations of Marshawn Lynch or the Seattle defense, but also play Russell Wilson and Steven Hauschka.

Countryside fire district welcomes new trustee Auto-aid agreements, shared equipment with Barrington fire also discussed

By TARAH THORNE tthorne@shawmedia.com LAKE BARRINGTON – As it prepares to separate from the village of Barrington, the Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District has appointed a fifth trustee to its board.

Paul Struck, a 12-year Lake Barrington resident, was appointed to the board.

Struck’s professional experience comes in the form of instructional technology, and he has been involved in politics, serving time as a Lake Barrington village trustee.

Struck will aide the district in its termination of co-operations with the village of Barrington and to oversee future decision-making.

“There’s a lot of emotion

being expressed and I want to make sure the best decisions are being made,” Struck said Monday during a meeting of the district’s board. “I’m a fan of fact-based, data-driven decisions.”

Citing disagreements in staffing levels and equipment purchases, the district requested in September 2012 to terminate ongoing intergovernmental agreements with the village. The most recent intergovernmental agreement expires Dec. 31, and while the district and village have selected their respective staffing levels for the new year, co-owned equipment has not yet been divided between the two entities.

Trustees stressed that they would like to see equipment stationed in the appropriate

locations prior to independent operations beginning Jan. 1.

District Chief Jeff Swanson added that the district cannot apply for its EMS system until it acquires full ownership of its two necessary ambulances. Additionally, the district’s new-hire training will begin in October and the district will need Northwest Community EMS system approval prior to training.

Swanson plans to reserve and purchase two ambulances from Fire Service Inc. in Naperville, and said the district plans to use the two older ambulances it should acquire during equipment dispersal as reserve vehicles or will reallocate those vehicles if necessary. Swanson also said the district plans to order a new tender. The two new am-

bulances should be in-house within 90 days and will cost a projected $448,336.

Swanson said the purchase is necessary because of the vast number of EMS calls.

“They will provide a superior ride with heavy fourwheel drive,” Swanson said.

“It will be really good for winter months.”

In terms of automatic aid agreements, Swanson has met with the Fox River Grove Fire Department to discuss sharing part-time, paid-on-call firefighters. He said the neighboring department polled its employees and found them to be interested, with many of those firefighters already trained in the Northwest Community EMS system.

Swanson also has recommended joining the McHen-

ry/Lake Counties Specialized Response Team in a new agreement for 2014.

Trustee Paul Heinze and Swanson met with the Palatine Rural Fire Protection District, and will likely form an agreement down the road.

“The discussion remains in place and we will meet again to break down call anatomy and response times for both departments,” Heinze said.

Trustee Tom Long suggested the two districts focus on timeliness rather than distance in terms of fire cooperation, even though the district’s western portion of Inverness borders Palatine service areas.

“In the fire service, distance is irrelevant,” Long said. “Time response is everything.”
