BARRINGTON – I can’t sing, and my art ability never advanced past stick figures.

That being said, I am completely in awe of the talent in this community.

Barrington Idol, a Barrington High School spinoff of the hit TV show, “American Idol,” is scheduled for Sept.

17. Ten students will be selected through an audition process to perform in front of a live, voting audience. And for those who don’t want to leave home on a school night, the talent competition will be streamed live online.

I spoke with last year’s Barrington Idol winner, JT Snyder, and he strongly encouraged me and anyone else to attend the live show. He said the audience participation is what makes the competition such a thrilling experience, and only members of the live audience will be able to vote. That’s the fun part, right?

Her paintings are bright and vivid – almost like stained glass. They’re simple, yet incredibly detailed. Bank incorporates inspiration from both the cityscape of Chicago and the naturescape of her Barrington home.

Given the Barrington connection and the broad range of musical, culinary and conventional artists registered for the festival, it might just be a perfect way to end the summer. Bank said the Lakeview festival is one of her annual favorites and I wish her all the best as she continues find success doing what she loves.

Laura was a Barrington cheerleader herself and shared insight about what has made her cheer program one of the area’s best for the past 10 years.

I am a former Level Two coach certified through the U.S. Olympic Training center and have trained over 70 athletes to state, national and international titles of competition. I’ve been inducted into the martial arts hall of fame by the U.S. Martial Arts Association, and was voted instructor of the year by the U.S. Tae Kwon Do Association.

What are your future plans?

I’d like to try to offer more programs that help our community. For instance, on Sept. 23, we are starting a new tae kwon do/karate program that’s for people in their 50s, 60s and 70s. This program is designed to improve that age groups’ balance, confidence, memory and socialization, while getting them in better shape and allowing them to earn their black belt. These classes will be held on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at noon and taught by a 70-year-old, third-degree black belt.

Barrington mom readies for art fest Painter uses bright and happy colors

By TARAH THORNE tthorne@shawmedia.com BARRINGTON – Local artist Carla Bank can still remember the point in her life when she knew she wanted to make painting a full-time career.

“I was in elementary school and took a trip to Frida Kahlo’s studio,” Bank said. “I was mesmerized and wanted my own studio ... my own temple.”

Originally from Mexico, Bank has lived in Barrington for four years and the Chicago area for nearly 20. She finds inspiration when she runs in the forest preserve near her home, and likes to incorporate nature into her artwork, along with bright colors.

Bank creates simplistic acrylic paintings with brushes and sometimes her hands and fingers. She said finger-painting makes her feel like a kid again, and every piece she creates is a rainbow with shades of red, orange, yellow, blue and green.

“People tell me I’m an explosion of colors and say I must be a very happy person,” Bank said.

Although she paints year-round doing commission-based or requested work, Bank’s busiest season is that of Chicago area art shows. She works every weekend from May to September and tries to get most of her painting done during the week.

“If I finish a show and realize I sold a lot, then I have to work a lot to replenish that merchandise,” she said.

When asked if she ever struggled to make art a career, Bank said it takes time, but it’s well worth it.

The ninth annual Lakeview East Festival of Arts this Saturday and Sunday will showcase inspirational art from painters, musicians and even chefs. Mauren Martino, director of the Lakeview East Chamber of Commerce, said Lakeview is very educated in the art industry and the community values the annual tradition.

Barrington artist Carla Bank earned an “Outstanding Achievement Award” at the Barrington Art Festival in May for her “Crazy Bird” piece which depicted a Cardinal. “Those birds are crazy because they always come out when it’s freezing,” said Bank. Her original painting was bought by the village of Barrington.

“You have to find your niche and figure out what people like,” Bank said. “My first year of art shows I sold so little that I thought about giving up.”

When she brings her art to

shows, Bank values the honest opinions of strangers.

“Friends will tell you they like everything,” Bank said.

“But strangers buy because they honestly appreciate your art and it’s a great feel-

ing.”

Most of Bank’s commission requests are for her individualized, square-fragment pieces. Families tell her where they have lived, what they have seen, etc. and she works within squares to create an artistic, grid-like story of their life.

In her at-home studio, Bank will often paint all day without a break, and then feed her three children dinner when they arrive home from school before she continues painting until 2 a.m.

“Once you’re inspired, you can’t stop,” Bank said.

Bank believes her children will spark an art interest eventually, but said they are more into sports.

“My mom used to work on art all day, and then one day it hit me, too,” Bank said.

One of Bank’s favorite art shows, the ninth annual Lakeview East Festival of Arts, is coming up Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 14-15, on Broadway Avenue between Belmont Avenue and Roscoe

Street in Lakeview. Bank is set to join 150 other artists skilled in various mediums to present her paintings to more than 40,000 attendees.

Maureen Martino, director of the Lakeview East Chamber of Commerce, said this “juried art fest” drew close to 40,000 visitors last year. She is hoping for 45,000 this year.

“It’s an inspirational art show rather than a street fest,” Martino said. “Art will be presented in many forms, even through cooking demonstrations with local cuisine and local bands with original music – no cover bands.”

The festival itself is free, aside from a $5 food pantry donation request, and family-friendly with live music, kids activities, puppet shows, juggling acts, and a beer and wine garden. It’s community-run with more than 100 volunteers. Martino described it as “zen-like.”

“It’s the one show of the year where I’m crossing my fingers that I get accepted,” said Bank, who will have participated for three years now.

Martino said that the chamber works with an artist recruiter at the beginning of each year to select artists through a jury process. Since many artists do very well in sales at the show, close to 60 percent return each year.

Others travel from as far as Israel.

“This is a community that’s educated in the art industry,” Martino said. “Festival-goers ask the artists a lot of great questions and the artists value that in the community.”

As a fulltime mother/artist, Bank stays in the Chicago and suburban area for her art shows. She said she would like to travel more to sell art when her children are grown.

“People come to shows to see what we [artists] have,” Martino said. “They want to see the size and feel of the art and that’s something you can’t do online.”

Garlands resident turns 100, attributes exercise “I really feel kind of strange when people give me credit for getting to 100. I didn’t do anything. No matter what you are doing, if you use moderation, it helps. ”

By STEPHANIE KOHL Barrington Life Contributor BARRINGTON – She’s lived through two World Wars, the Great Depression, medical improvements, technological advancements and has seen a man walk on the moon.

On Sept. 19, Betty Catlin will celebrate another milestone when she turns 100. She was born in 1913.

“I’m amazed, but other than that, I’m just happy with every day that comes,” said Catlin, a resident of The Garlands in Barrington, where she has lived since 2002. “I’ve lived through an amazing century if you think about it.”

Catlin works out daily with friends at the fitness center of The Garlands. She uses the NuStep (think an elliptical, only sitting) for 20 minutes every morning and does as much walking as she can, both inside and outside on the grounds of The Garlands.

Health-wise, Catlin said she has been lucky. She said she doesn’t really have the aches and pains commonly associated with those who’ve reached a certain age.

“I really feel kind of strange when people give me credit for getting to 100,” Catlin said. “I didn’t do anything.”

However, Catlin does believe in doing everything in moderation.

“No matter what you are doing, if you use moderation, it helps,” she said.

Catlin has lived in the Chicago area her entire life and met her husband, Ed, as a freshman at Northwestern University, where she studied Liberal Arts. Prior to entering school, she was in a car accident and started the school year on crutches.

The two were married in 1934 and had six children – five sons and one daughter.

Her husband died in 1985 and her oldest son died two years ago, but Catlin still has plenty of family around.

She has 10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and another great-grandchild, a

baby girl, is due Sept. 20.

“Since I was an only child and my husband was an only child, we really didn’t know what we were doing, but they all turned out pretty well,” Catlin said with a laugh.

Catlin has traveled the world with visits to Egypt, the North Cape in Norway, France and Italy. More recently, she viewed the Earth from a new perspective while on a hot air balloon ride with

her daughter and granddaughter.

In addition to exercise and visiting with friends and family, Catlin also reads about two books every week.

Looking back on her life, Catlin said she couldn’t think of anything she would change.

“If you can look back over your life and say that, I think that indicates good fortune on my part,” Catlin said.

She does have some advice for living a fulfilled and happy life, though.

“Try to overcome the things in your life that aren’t the way you want them to be and change them to correct it,” she said. “Try to have a positive attitude about life. ... If you work at something, you can improve it.”

Over Labor Day weekend, The Garlands hosted a 100th birthday party for Catlin, with 35 to 40 members of her family and Garlands friends, neighbors and staff scheduled to attend. The last time she had her whole family together was Catlin’s 90th birthday.

“It’s a family that really I feel confident enjoys getting together and being together and that’s what I really hoped for when I had a big family,” she said.

D-220 observes dip in middle school enrollment BARRINGTON – Enrollment at the Barrington 220 School District is about 50 students fewer district-wide than it was a year ago, the district announced.

On the first day of the 20132014 school year, 8,882 students were registered, compared to 8,929 on the first day of school in 2012.

The district said most of the decrease has occurred in the elementary grades, with an average class size of 19.7 students.

The average class size of middle school core classes is 23.6 students, and high school classes average 24.4 students.

Barrington 220 regularly monitors enrollment numbers to determine the correct balance of students and teachers for class sizes.

Enrollment data is analyzed on days one, six and 30 of each school year to adjust class sizes where appropriate and if possible.

Fall fitness at Barrington Martial Arts BARRINGTON – Barrington Martial Arts has announced several special programs for the month of September, including a weight loss challenge, discounted tae kwon do and karate classes, and a new program for adults 50 to 70 years old.

LAKE BARRINGTON – The Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District has signed an agreement with Paramedic Services of Illinois to provide the district with 33 full-time firefighters/ paramedics for its independent operations beginning Jan. 1.

This contract, approved Sept. 5 by the district board, is the beginning of a monthslong partnership between PSI and the district to fully staff its Barrington Hills and Lake Barrington fire stations. District trustees also began discussions with PSI to further increase staffing with supplemental part-time personnel.

Hiring will begin in October, with personnel training starting in November. All district firefighters/paramedics will be employed by PSI, but report directly to District Fire Chief Jeff Swanson.

When the district in September 2012 informed the

village of Barrington that it wished to end its intergovernmental agreement through which the district and village shared equipment and personnel, the district agreed to hire any personnel who would lose their job when the village operates on a smaller scale as of Jan. 1.

“We hope the village will release those names (of laidoff staff) immediately, so those firefighters have ample time to apply for positions with the district,” said Swanson.

With the PSI agreement completed, district trustees said they will focus on confirming a date to divide the apparatus and equipment jointly owned by the district and village. Board members may then consider purchasing additional equipment.

The district’s next public board meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Sept. 16.

LAURA MEEHAN TEACHER, CHEERLEADING COACH Barrington head cheerleading coach and elementary teacher Laura Meehan was a Barrington High School cheerleader herself. She said the sport has become much more athletic and competitive in recent years.

Meehan answered Barrington Life’s questions about her cheer experience, teaching career and inspiration to coach.

You continued to cheer after high school, in college. How did you balance the sport with academics? What advice do you give your cheerleaders in this regard?

Being a collegiate athlete helped me keep a consistent schedule for academics. I was lucky enough to have access to an academic resource center for athletes to support me in my studies. I always encourage kids who cheer in college to remember that their daily life will not look like the average college student but that they will grow in other ways because of their unique experiences.

You teach at two elementary schools – Roslyn and Grove Avenue. How does this work? What grades and subjects do you teach?

I am an instructional coach at Roslyn and Grove, which means that I am a teacher who does not have my own classroom. Instead my role is to work with teachers on job-embedded professional development that impacts student achievement in math and literacy. I feel so lucky because I get to work with all of the wonderful students and teachers in both buildings. My students tell me all the time that they can’t wait to cheer at BHS.

This is your 10th year as

BHS head cheer coach.

How long have you been teaching? What inspired you to coach?

This is also my 10th year teaching. I began my career teaching math in Lake Zurich and then I taught math, language arts and science at Prairie before beginning my role as an instructional coach. I love helping students grow and I have loved cheerleading for 20 years, so coaching is a logical way to help students continue to grow outside the classroom both as athletes and as young men and women.

What do you and the cheerleaders do when you aren’t practicing or performing? Any bonding activities or fundraisers?

We love to have team dinners and just spend time in practice chatting about life outside of cheer. We spend so much time together that it is important for my athletes to know each other as friends so that they can work together to achieve high goals.

Is cheer a summertime sport, too? Do you have any competitions when the squad isn’t in school or participate in parades, etc.? Do you recommend that the cheerleaders take some sort of technique classes outside of school?

Many of our athletes participate in outside tumbling and flexibility classes and club teams in the spring. We begin our work together in the summer to prepare for the football season and to build skills for the year. In the fall, we cheer for football and soccer. Then in the winter, in addition to cheering for basketball, we compete in our own Illinois High School Association season. We participate in five regular-season competitions and then IHSA sectionals and state finals. In both 2012 and 2013, our co-ed varsity team took second place in the state.

What are tryouts like?

What is your advice to the girls and boys each year? Is it hard to turn people away?

My assistant coach, Caroline Milne, and I do our best to make tryouts as relaxed as possible. Our goal is to pick the best team and to provide all athletes who try out with positive feedback to help them grow. My advice is always to do their best, not

be the best. It is very hard to turn away athletes because it is hard to disappoint children who are putting in effort. We encourage students who do not make the team to join a club program, take some tumbling classes, grow in their skills, and try out again.

What is most rewarding for you as both a teacher and a coach?

It is most rewarding to know that my students and athletes feel like they belong in our classroom or program.

Children should always feel like they have a place where they fit in; Caroline and I work hard to make sure that our program is that place for our athletes. We call our athletes and their families “the Chamily” (cheer family) and we stick together. Whether that means cheering each other on to hit a new skill or supporting each other in times of personal need, my goal is for my athletes to always know that they have a home with us.

What do you like to do

when you aren’t coaching or in the classroom?

My boyfriend and I love to take long walks to explore the city and we are trying hard to learn to cook. My favorite way to spend a day off is getting lost in a great book. I am very close with my family and my childhood friends. We love to get together and talk, talk, talk!

What are your plans for this cheer season and beyond?

Our plans for this cheer season are for our athletes to be as successful as possible while having fun. There is often a lot of pressure in successful athletic programs to maintain the momentum from the previous year. While we would love each child to know the amazing feeling of walking across the awards podium at state, we know that the memories they will keep from Barrington cheerleading are the times when they laugh and enjoy what they are doing. We have to be careful to find a balance and avoid high pressure.

2012 winner anticipates more entertaining competition at this year’s show

By TARAH THORNE tthorne@shawmedia.com BARRINGTON – It’s lights, camera, nail biting for retiring Barrington High School choir director Nancie Tobison and several dozen students who are trying out for the annual Barrington Idol competition.

Tobison brought this audience-involved talent competition to BHS nearly 10 years ago, shortly after “American Idol” made its TV debut in 2001. She said the students like to imitate the TV show, and audience members like to be involved by placing their votes for a winner.

Each year, the BHS choir board screens 20 to 30 applicants to be part of the 10-per-

son show. These tryouts give students the opportunity to showcase the acts they plan to compete with and it gives the choir board a chance to preview material.

“We want everyone to be successful and well-received by the audience,” Tobison said. “It’s good to screen any lyrics, too.”

Although the show is streamed live online each year, voting can be done only by the in-house audience. Last year’s winner, JT Snyder, said the show is much more entertaining in person.

“I’m planning on performing something that will get everyone up out of their seats like last year,” Snyder said.

Snyder, a sophomore, cannot compete this year, but he plans to do an encore performance. He has been in choir since sixth grade, and said Barrington Idol is unlike any other experience he has had.

“It was a great way for me to start the year, and it lets kids show their talent in a different way,” Snyder said.

“I wish I had known about it

years prior to come watch, and I’ve been encouraging my younger friends to compete.”

Tobison said student interest in the competition has continued to grow from year to year. Snyder’s vocal/piano performance of “Keep Your Head Up” by Andy Grammar shocked her – in a good way.

She said the Barrington Idol audience will be in for more surprises this year.

“I’ve been absolutely knocked out by the talent of some of the younger kids,” Tobison said. “JT’s performance took me back to my Woodstock musical festival days.”

Saying goodbye to her 20year BHS teaching role at the end of the year, Tobison said she is glad to have been involved in a show that reached

more students than just those in the school’s choir.

“Barrington Idol is open to any student, and this is a whole different ball game,” she said. “They are rock ’n’ roll stars.”

This year, Barrington Idol will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17, at Barrington High School.

Choir board Vice President Maty Bauer said she anticipates tickets will be sold online through the school’s Fine Arts page or at the door – $3 with student ID, $5 per adult; children get in free.

Baur said the choir board has been busily planning for this first, big event of the year and it hopes to select a variety of acts this year, appealing to a broad audience.

ALS Barrington family raises money to find cure for Lou Gehrig’s disease

BARRINGTON – Paul Launer knows that even if a cure for ALS were found today, it would be too late to save him.

But that hasn’t stopped the Barrington resident from doing everything in his power to raise awareness about the disease and raise funds to help aid research and find a cure.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly called Lou Gehrig’s disease, affects motor neurons. As the illness affects the body, motor neurons stop working and muscles weaken.

Mobility becomes nearly impossible, and the ability to speak disappears.

While every case is different, ALS claims the life of the majority of patients three to five years after they are diagnosed. There is no cure.

Launer was diagnosed with the disease in June 2011.

“Paul would like to die knowing there is a cure for this,” said his wife, Kris.

For Paul, who has lost much of his mobility and some of his ability to speak as the disease progresses, it is important to do what he can, while he can. So he spoke with Kris and family friend Sue Randall about putting together a team for the Les Turner ALS Walk4Life scheduled for Sept. 22 in Chicago.

Randall, who has done several Avon walks and is usually a top fundraiser, jumped into gear to get Paul Launer’s Iron Horse Brigade team together.

“It has been pretty easy [to get people to join] because everybody loves

More than 50 people already have joined the team, and the Iron Horse Brigade anticipates it will have at least 100 walkers.

The team’s goal is to raise $10,000, and more than half of that has already been raised. The team will travel to the city on a bus with a wheelchair lift, provided by the Barrington Transportation Co. “Paul has been an inspiration to all of us,” said Bob Lee of Barrington, who is active in several charities, and has ridden more than 12,000 miles across the country on his bike to raise money for cancer, ALS and hospice. He is on the board at the Les Turner Foundation.

“He has ALS, and that’s a tough stake in the ground,” Lee said. “He could be bitter, mad, but he looks at the great wife and kids he has.”

The Les Turner ALS Walk4Life is

one of the world’s largest ALS gatherings, with thousands of walkers taking part each year. In its 11-year history, the walk has raised more than $8 million. Each walk features Faces of ALS banners. Paul will be featured this year.

“You see the faces that have walked the walk, and there’s a lot of them,” Lee said.

Lee said there are seven families in the 60010 ZIP code being cared for by the Les Turner Foundation.

Maintaining a positive attitude is the best thing the Launer family can do to get through day to day. The couple have two daughters Aubrey, 10, and Sarah, 9.

“We deal with it OK,” Kris said. “I think what’s hard is when he loses a function or has a setback. I think it’s hard on the kids. ... But we still laugh.

We still find lots of things to laugh about.”

Kris added that as bad as their situation is, she and Paul feel blessed because they have each other, their family and great friends, all who offer amazing support.

“I tell the kids all the time when they get upset about it: You’re lucky to have the dad you have for as long as you have him,” she said.

The family doesn’t sweat the small stuff anymore. As a matter of fact, in honor of Paul’s July 24 birthday, Kris

declared it No Complaining Day. “You really have to get up every day and think, I’m still breathing, and that’s a good day. ... Smile. Be happy. ... We only get one chance at this and it doesn’t cost you anything to smile,” Kris said.

Knowing how precious time is now, Paul is getting his thoughts down on paper to share with his children after he is gone. It’s something he has always thought about doing, even before he got sick.

Working with Randall a few days each week, Paul has shared 45 letters, or notes of sorts, to his children.

The letters cover a variety of topics, stories and life lessons Paul wishes to impart on his children.

“The main thing is I am leaving a lot of things I wish I would be around to help them with later in life,” Paul said. “[This will] teach them lessons and whatever they decide, I am behind them no matter what. ... I want them to know some of the things I made mistakes on and hopefully they won’t do the exact same thing.”

Some of the notes include lessons on truthfulness, treating others the way you want to be treated, and respect for others and respect for yourself. Others cover marriage and having children.

“Paul has a lot to say,” Randall said.

BHS students named National Merit semifinalists tthorne@shawmedia.com BARRINGTON – Thirteen Barrington High School students were named semifinalists in the 59th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

The 16,000 national semifinalists have the opportunity to continue in the competition for 8,000 National Merit Scholarships. Officials estimate a total of $35 million to be offered next spring.

Contestants must fulfill several requirements to advance to the finalist level of the competition. Officials expect 90 percent of the semifinalists to attain finalist standing and more than half of those finalists to win the National Merit Scholarship and be named a Merit Scholar.

About 1.5 million high school juniors in more than 22,000 schools entered the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the

2012 Preliminary SAT exam, an initial screening of entrants. The semifinalists and their high schools must then submit a detailed scholarship application to become finalists, including academic history and information about community service, leadership abilities, employment, honors and awards received.

The semifinalist must write an essay and earn an SAT score that confirms exceptional performance.

Announcements of those advancing to the finalist level will occur in February.

National Merit Scholarship winners of 2014 will be announced beginning in April.

Barrington hosts Rolling Meadows in home opener BARRINGTON – The Barrington Broncos head into week three of the regular season undefeated. What’s most impressive is that they have yet to play at home – that is until today when they host the Rolling Meadows Mustangs.

Barrington opened the 2013 season with two straight away games at Jacobs and Mount Prospect. Both contests proved to be challenging, however the Broncos responded both defensively and offensively and left victorious. Barrington has seen great production from some of its star athletes, including outside linebacker Colin Costagna, who is coming off of a three-sack performance last week.

The Broncos have been implementing the read option/no huddle offense this season, and so far it has been paying off.

Barrington has used multiple weapons, especially at running back, where JT Henderson, Dylan Abel and Dumaso Mkwananzi receive quality touches. This depth at running back, paired with the fast-paced no huddle, has been difficult for opposing defenses to read.

Quarterback Daniel Kubiuk has developed a clear comfort with the no-huddle offense, and various receivers, such as Mike Carbonara and Matt Moran, have reaped the benefits. Kubiuk’s ability to run the play action as well as scramble has made him a dual threat. Kubiuk feels that this year’s offense seems to gel well and hopes the success continues.

“It’s going really well …

I think we’re getting snaps off quicker, and everything’s just clicking,” Kubiuk said.

Now the Broncos set their sights on the 1-1 Mustangs, who boast a solid passing attack led by quarterback Bobby Suchecki, who is playing in his first season on varsity.

Defensively, Rolling Meadows has struggled to stop the run this season, allowing 556 yards on the ground to Fremd last week.

Expect to see the Broncos use their running backs early and often.

With all of the emotions that surround a home opener, the players as well as the coaches are preparing just like they would any other week.

“As excited as we are to go home … our focus is just take care of Rolling Meadows,” head coach Joe Sanchez said.

BHS Broncos move to 2-0 MOUNT PROSPECT – The Barrington Broncos claimed a 27-14 win over Mount Prospect on Friday night.

It didn’t take long for the Broncos (2-0) to get on the scoreboard, completing a 70-yard drive led by quarterback Daniel Kubiuk on just their second possession. Mkwananzi, along with a 13-yard completion to Mike Carbonara, the Broncos were at the goal line. Barrington completed the five-minute drive with a quarterback sneak for a touchdown by Kubiuk.

“I think we still have some work to go but I think we’ve made some great strides these past two weeks and I think we’re doing really well,” Kubiuk said.

Abel finished with two touchdowns and Mkwananzi added another.

Bears can’t let Adrian Peterson beat them Hub Arkush

CHICAGO – With all of the buildup to the opener against the Bengals and the way the Bears struggled before finally prevailing over a quality opponent, it will be difficult to take the Vikings as seriously. Some will be tempted to put this one in the win column before taking a hard look at the task at hand.

That would be a huge mistake.

While the Vikings do appear to be a better matchup for the Bears, the fact is they have an awful lot in common with the Bengals. Have we forgotten already that Minnesota had an identical 10-6 record to Cincinnati last year and, like the Bengals, were first round playoff losers?

Even more to the point, should we ignore the fact that it was the Vikings who knocked the Bears out of a play-

off spot last season with a superior record in the NFC North and a fairly sound 21-14 thumping in week 14?

Take the Vikings lightly at your own peril. If the Bears do, they’ll be 1-1 after two weeks of the season.

The good news is that if the Bears do stay focused and prepare properly for Minnesota, this is a game they should win.

The biggest difference in the Vikings and the Bengals is Andy Dalton is a quarterback who can beat you while Minnesota’s Christian Ponder is more likely to beat the Vikings.

After an allegedly strong preseason, Ponder struggled in the Vikings opener in Detroit, going 18-28 for 236 yards and one 1 TD, but throwing three picks. The Vikings can’t win if Ponder is that generous with the Bears.

But the Vikes absolutely can knock off the Bears and anybody else if the NFL’s reigning MVP, Adrian Peterson, takes over the game. In two outings vs. the Bears last year, Peterson totaled 49 carries for 262 yards and two TDs, going over 100 yards on

the ground in both games and adding eight receptions for 46 yards.

On A.P.’s first carry of 2013, he went 78 yards for a touchdown. But the Lions actually held him to 17 yards on 15 carries the rest of the way, although he did rush for another score and catch four passes for 18 yards and a third TD. Minnesota’s top three receivers – Greg Jennings, Kyle Rudolph and 1st round draft choice Cordarrelle Patterson – were held to 6 catches for 70 yards between them last week. Jerome Simpson did have seven catches for 140 yards.

On defense, the Vikings had a horrible opener in Detroit, allowing 469 yards to the Lions including 352 through the air. While Jarred Allen did notch his first sack of the season, it was the only time Matt Stafford was pressured ail day.

We should also note that the Vikings defense allowed four of its last five 2012 foes to go over 400 yards.

The Vikings will have to be a completely different team this week

to push the Bears at home. They can be if Kevin Williams gets healthy and Everson Griffen, Brian Robison and Sharrif Floyd decide to help Allen push the pocket.

The Vikings secondary is iffy, but Chad Greenway is a Pro Bowler at outside linebacker and Eric Henderson is capable in the middle.

At the end of the day, though, this one will come down to A.D., as in “All Day” Adrian Peterson. The Bears did a nice job holding the Bengals to 21 carries for 63 yards on the ground, but this won’t be Benjarvus Green-Ellis and Giovani Bernard.

The Bears have handled A.P. better than most, facing him twice in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2012 and once in 2010 and 2011. Peterson is 217-1,085, 5.0 yards per carry and 13 TDs career vs. the Bears. He’s been held under 100 yards rushing in five of his 10 games but has scored in all but two.

The NFL is certainly all about “on any given Sunday.” But if the Bears don’t let Peterson beat them, it’s unlikely the Vikings will.

By J.C. TALON Fantasy Football columnist In my preseason column, you were warned about conventional wisdom in fantasy football. I suggested that since every fantasy football “expert” was imploring you to take running backs early and often, you might want to consider an alternate strategy.

Some of you took issue with the opinion. In fact, one reader called the logic “deeply flawed.”

It is way too early to say “I told you so” … but I’m saying it anyway. The events of the first week are making me look like a genius.

If you followed the advice of ESPN.com expert Chris Harris, who said on the Waddle & Silvy radio show that you should take “five or six” running backs in the first 10 rounds … well, your season is probably already over.

Let’s review Harris’ top 10

overall players, all RBs: • Adrian Petersen: 93 yards rushing, two TDs rushing and one receiving. This was a great day, and, in my defense, I did state that AP was worthy of the top pick. It should be noted that he gained only 15 yards on his final 17 carries.

• Arian Foster: 18 carries for 57 yards.

• Marshawn Lynch: 43 yards rushing.

• Ray Rice: 36 yards rushing, one touchdown.

• Doug Martin: 65 yards on 24 carries, one touchdown.

• Jamaal Charles: 77 yards, one touchdown.

• LeSean McCoy: 84 yards and a TD. He had a big day, as did the Eagles, although their last points came on the first drive of the second half.

• CJ Spiller: 41 yards rushing.

• Trent Richardson: 47 yards rushing.

• Alfred Morris: 46 yards (makes sense he’d be slotted one spot below the guy with

47 yards).

Only one of the 10 ran for over 100 yards, and five were held to under 50 yards! If you passed on receivers like Demaryius Thomas, A.J. Green or Larry Fitzgerald – or quarterbacks such as Peyton Manning, Aaron Rodgers or Drew Brees – you are probably kicking yourself about now.

On to Week Two …

MATCHUPS TO EXPLOIT Vikings at Bears, noon Sunday The Bears’ offense started slowly against the Bengals, but picked up steam as the game progressed. The Vikings’ defense allowed 469 yards to the Lions. The Bears

might not be able to match Detroit’s offensive weapons, but they should have success Sunday. Matt Forte and Brandon Marshall are obvious plays, and Martellus Bennett has a chance to be a top-five tight end this week. The Bears’ defense is another obvious play; if the Vikes fall behind, Christian Ponder is probably good for a couple of turnovers, at least. If you need a spot starter this week, consider Jay Cutler and Alshon Jeffery.

Rams at Falcons, noon Sunday If Arizona can rack up 390 yards of offense on the Rams, it would seem likely that the Falcons – still sore from a tough loss in New Orleans – will enjoy offensive success.

Julio Jones is an obvious start, and Matt Ryan is a topfive QB this week. Look for Steven Jackson to bounce back against his old team.

thew Stafford are solid starts in a game that should feature a lot of points and little defense. Reggie Bush appears to be a must-start every week, as are Calvin Johnson and Larry Fitzgerald. Rashard Mendenhall might be worth a start if you are thin at running back.

MATCHUP TO AVOID 49ers at Seahawks, 7:30 Sunday As crazy as this might sound, you might want to consider back-up options for Colin Kaepernick this week.

The 49ers struggled mightily in Seattle last season. Kaepernick finished with 244 yards passing, one TD and one interception. In two games against the Seahawks last year, the 49ers managed a combined 26 points. The Seahawks’ defense may actually be better than it was a year ago. Also consider other options for Frank Gore.

It would be hard to sit Vernon Davis or Anquan Boldin, but expect drop-offs.

LAKE BARRINGTON – The Lake Barrington Community Homeowners Association and the village of Lake Barrington are hosting the “Run the Shores at Lake Barrington 5K Race and 1-Mile Fun Run & Walk” later this month.

The event starts at 8 a.m. Sept.

21, beginning at the Market Place Shopping Center at Route 59 and Kelsey Road. Proceeds will benefit Cuba Cares, a nonprofit that supports the Cuba Township Food Pantry and its recipients.

A race bag and “Run the Shores” T-shirt will be provided to all participants and prizes will be awarded to the top finishers by age category. Refreshments and a post-race raffle will be held, giving away prizes valued up to $200 from area businesses.

The race course has been newly USA Track & Field-certified and this will be the first year for professionally timed results to be posted online.

Participants can pre-register online and by mail, or register the day

Autumn Wine Walk highlights fall merchandise BARRINGTON – Downtown merchants will host an Autumn Wine Walk from 2 to 6 p.m. on Sept. 14 to kick off the fall shopping season.

This village-led tradition will feature 20 shops and eight local food/ wine sponsors for a day of free wine tastings and treats.

Customers can begin the Wine Walk by picking up a location guide at most Village Center merchants, such as Grassroots and Angelina, or Norton’s U.S.A and the Pink Geranium on Lageschulte Street.

The Ice House Mall also will be participating, with treats and location guides at Anderson’s Candy Shop on West Main Street.

Wines will be provided by Heinen’s Fine Foods, McGonigal’s Pub, The Annex, Grassroots, Ciao Baby,

Jewel-Osco, Cooper’s of Barrington and Chessie’s. Each shop “stop” will showcase local merchandise.

“This is a chance for residents and visitors alike to visit the unique stores and specialty shops that are found only in Barrington,” said Anne Garrette of the village of Barrington.

Barrington woman tests positive for West Nile A Barrington woman has tested positive for West Nile virus, becoming Lake County’s first human case in 2013, the Lake County Health Department said.

The 54-year-old, unidentified woman was not hospitalized and is recovering, the health department said in a news release. Last year, there were seven confirmed cases of West Nile virus in Lake County.

The health department also said that 15 pools of mosquitoes and two birds have tested positive for the virus this year in the county, in addition to the human case.

By TRACY GRUEN Barrington Life Contributor BARRINGTON – Traveling all the way from New Mexico, Mark Swinney is scheduled to come Sept. 14 to Barrington’s First Church of Christ, Scientist, to share his passion for Christian Science healing.

Swinney’s talk is called “What is it that connects prayer and healing?” and is scheduled for 11 a.m. at the church, 421 E. Main St. in Barrington. A question-and-answer session and reception will follow the lecture.

“This is to help strengthen the effects of their prayer,” Swinney said of his lecture, which is aimed at the whole family and is about the power of God’s love to heal. “It doesn’t really matter what you’re praying about; it’s turning to the love that is God.” Swinney’s beliefs are based on the teachings of Jesus Christ as indicated in the Bible, and the scriptures of Mary Baker Eddy.

“We’re all excited to have Mark speak to us,” said Peggy Elmes, a member of First Church of Christ, Scientist.

“The general public can relate to his experiences. Whether it’s sports, business or family, he relies on God.” Swinney believes there is a healing effect that takes place when “the power of God is allowed to transform one’s thoughts,” according to a news release about the lecture.

“Some of the members had heard him speak elsewhere.

They felt he had such a sense of honesty and a candid style of delivering a message,” said Nancy Bachmann, a member of the church.

“There’s a growing interest in Christian Science not only in Barrington, but worldwide,” Elmes said. She said their church was established in 1937 and continues to attract new members.

Bachmann said Christian Science involves the reinstatement of primitive Christian healing. She said that

Mary Baker Eddy founded Christian Science on the basis that there was a science behind what Jesus was demonstrating.

“You always get new ideas and different perspectives from different people,” said Bachmann. “I’m always looking for new ways to be more Christian and [to be] able to heal better. I’m hoping that anyone interested in finding healing would want to attend.

It’s not an opportunity to sell a religion; it is an opportunity to share this healing presence of God with the community.”

“People are definitely praying more than ever,” said Swinney, who gives talks throughout the world.

“I love doing it,” Swinney said of giving his presentations. “I want them to really be able to enjoy the effects of it.”

In elementary school, Swinney said his love for God started to increase after he was instantly healed from injuries that he experienced after an accident. Since then,
