Children reunited with friends and met their new teachers on the playground at Ardmore School on Monday morning, while several parents stood by to take pictures and see their children off.

District 44 operates six elementary schools and two middle school in town.

VILLA PARK – On Saturday, Villa Park’s elected officials, department heads and some staff will spent most of the day participating in a strategic planning workshop to develop and prioritize goals and projects for the village.

Village President Deb Bullwinkel said the results from it would help develop a strategic plan for the village.

“It was invigorating,” Bullwinkel said. “It was great to have the opportunity to sit in a room together as a team and put our wish list out there, our dreams and goals for Villa Park.”

About four years ago, when Bullwinkel first was sworn-in as a village trustee, the board approved a comprehensive plan. Bullwinkel said a strategic plan will provide an implementation schedule for completing the projects already defined in the comprehensive plan.

“Our strategic plan is actually going to be about getting to the meat of ‘Where do we want to go?’” she said before

the workshop.

To complete this process, the village is working with Sikich, a Naperville-based company that facilitates the development of strategic plans.

The village’s department heads have previously met with representatives from Sikich to talk about the plans and priorities each has for his or her department, Bullwinkel said.

These conversations were to be a part of Saturday’s workshop.

Village staff also complied results from a community survey that was conducted earlier this year. The survey was included in the “Village Matters” summer newsletter.

Currently, representatives from Sikich are preparing an initial draft of the strategic plan, which will be reviewed, discussed and edited before the final plan is approved.

Bullwinkel said she wants this plan to address all goals outlined for the village, but also be flexible enough to be adjusted in the future, as necessary.

“The first part was getting together and talking as a team,” she said. “Putting on paper what we’d like to see for Villa Park in five, 10 years.”

WHEATON – A Villa Park man accused of starting a house fire last summer that killed Paula Morgan in her Lombard home and severely burned Jason Cassidy, currently of Lombard, appeared in court Wednesday for a hearing.

Todd Mandoline, 24, appeared in court before Judge John Kinsella where a DVD showing a portion of his interview with members of the Lombard Police Department was presented to the courtroom. Later, John Malatia, detective sergeant with the Lombard Police Department, was questioned by the prosecution and defense.

Mandoline was charged with four counts of first-degree murder, three counts of aggravated arson, one count of residential arson and one count of criminal damage to property.

In the early-morning hours of July 22, 2012, Mandoline allegedly stuck a piece of paper into the fuel tank Todd of Morgan’s car Mandoline as it was parked in the driveway of her Lombard home and lit it on fire. The flames engulfed the car and then spread to the adjacent home in the 1000 block of South Ahrens Avenue.

The video presented in court Wednesday showed Mandoline being interviewed by the police. He described watching Morgan’s house late into the night, after he had allegedly been taken home from a birthday party at her home, and eventually igniting her car.

“I lit it and I walked away,” he said.

Before Kinsella called a recess at noon, the defense side was cross-examining Malatia to determine when Mandoline’s decision to not call a lawyer was made. Video surveillance of him deciding to do so is not available because he was allegedly outside having a cigarette at the time, where cameras were not posted.

VILLA PARK – When he was in sixth grade, Jack Corkery’s mother signed him up to participate in a local youth theater group’s production of “Annie Jr.,” an adapted version of the musical “Little Orphan Annie.”

At first he didn’t think he’d like it, but this play turned out to be a jumping-off point for Corkery, who since has immersed himself in the theater department at Willowbrook High School.

“I really like the people who are in it,” he said. “I’ve met some of my greatest friends in theater. I’ve come to love being on stage.”

Earlier this summer, the high school junior was selected to perform in the Illinois High School Theater Festival’s All-State play, an opportunity awarded to only 30 students throughout the state.

His original play, “Life Among the Still Lives,” also was selected as a winner in Eureka College’s Illinois High School 10-Minute Play Festival competition, and will be performed in November, an experience that Corkery predicts will be “surreal.”

With just more than a week into the 2013-14 school year, junior year is one that Corkery predicts will be a good one; full of performing, hanging out with friends and staying on top of school work.

At the beginning of the summer, the 16-year-old from Villa Park auditioned for a role in the All-State play, which is being directed this year by Mark Kaetzer, a fine arts instructor at Glenbard East High School.

Corkery said he was familiar with the All-State

play, having heard stories from older students who previously attended the theater festival at Illinois State University. His decision to audition this year was influenced by the fact that rehearsals would be at the neighboring school of Glenbard East, rather than far from home.

“I remember when I got called – I was in my friend’s basement hanging out,” he said. “We all started hugging and screaming.”

Getting a cast of 30 and crew of 26 students from around the state together is a tricky feat, so the play’s rehearsals are concentrated during long weekends. The first was before school began, and Corkery said he’s looking forward to the second during Labor Day weekend.

Rehearsals are very intense and take entire days, he said.

The All-State play commitment will not prevent him for getting involved with Willowbrook’s play, too, he said. The first show of the year is “Into the Woods,” which Corkery said is one of his favorites.

In January, he and the rest of the cast from the All-State play will travel to Illinois State University to perform. This, Corkery said, is the thing he’s looking forward to most.

“I can’t wait to actually get in front of an audience,” he said.

Obamacare and the IRS: A disastrous combination After recent news reports revealed that IRS agents were engaged in widespread, systematic targeting of individuals based on their political and religious beliefs, Americans were rightly outraged. Subsequent Congressional investigations revealed not only were people harassed by agents, but IRS officials had been caught leaking confidential taxpayer information and squandering away millions of tax dollars.

In light of these myriad scandals, the House of Representatives moved to enforce strict oversight of the IRS, curbing their power and putting strong checks in place to prevent future abuses.

But thanks to the president’s health care law, the IRS is poised to expand into the health insurance business.

That’s right, the very same agency caught harassing Americans and mishandling their tax information is tasked with the massive undertaking of implementing and enforcing Obamacare. IRS agents now will be collecting information on individual’s health status, enforcing the requirement that everyone get health insurance and fining those who don’t have coverage. In total, the agency will run point on almost 50 new provisions of the health care law. Summing up the cause for serious concern, the Treasury Department watchdog called the new responsibilities given to the IRS, “unprecedented in recent history.”

Studies show that the cost of health care continues to rise, while industry experts and doctors warn about a decrease in the quality of care. Barring the IRS from implementing and enforcing the law is a step in the right direction. Delaying the mandates in the law is another. The end goal is to protect individuals from the rising costs and harmful effects of Obamacare, and working to replace it with patient-centered reforms that remove all Washington bureaucrats from your health care decisions.

Tapes played of man accused in murder-for-hire plot SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA LOMBARD – Undercover recordings of a Lombard businessman accused of arranging a murder-for-hire plot were played Tuesday in federal court by prosecutors, according to media reports.

Daniel Dvorkin, 74, 1636 S. Highland Ave., Lombard, is charged with one count of solicitation to commit a crime of violence, namely murder-for-hire, a felony.

On Tuesday, the undercover recordings indicated Dvorkin was unhappy with how much the contract killing would cost him, a government informant testified, according to reports.

In a secretly recorded con-

versation played for jurors, Dvorkin told Robert Bevis, a suburban gun shop owner and private investigator, that he wasn’t happy with the $100,000 price tag that Bevis said his “guy” in Florida wanted, according to reports.

Bevis agreed to work undercover for the FBI after Dvorkin first approached him.

Dvorkin is on trial in federal court on charges he solicited the murder-for-hire of Larry Meyer, a Texas debt collector, who in early 2012 won an $8.2 million judgment against Dvorkin stemming from defaulted loans on two corporate jets, according to reports.

Dvorkin faces up to five years incarceration if convicted.

Dog befriends firefighter rescuers

By SARAH SMALL ssmall@shawmedia.com VILLA PARK – Dogs are often called man’s best friend, and Titan, a small, white bulldog made a few new friends from the Villa Park Fire Department when he was rescued from the garden apartment of a building on fire Monday.

No residents of the building were injured in the fire.

Fire crews were called to a multifamily building at 16 W. Terrace St. at 12:17 p.m. Monday for reports of smoke. When they arrived, firefighters found smoke in a stairwell on the east side of the building, said Villa Park Fire Chief Ron Rakosnik.

At the discovery of fire, the alarm was upgraded to bring in crews from the Lombard and Elmhurst fire departments and the Addison and York Center fire protection district.

The building’s occupants were able to self evacuate, and then firefighters did a primary search of the building, where each room is quickly searched to make

sure no one is left inside, Rakosnik said.

“Then we found out shortly thereafter that there was a dog in the garden apartment,” he said.

Firefighters went back into the building, rescued the dog and placed him in the bed of a truck to receive oxygen.

The fire department has a supply of oxygen masks that are specially designed to fit over the noses and mouths of pets to be used in emergency situations. They were donated by an animal-friendly organization.

This was the first time Rackosnik said he’s seen firefighters use the masks since he joined the department as chief last summer, but he remembers crews using them on pets a few times when he was with the Lombard Fire Department.

“It seemed to work, and after that he was a happy little guy,” Rakosnik said.

Although the dog was rescued without incident, two firefighters were hurt on the scene and brought to local hospitals for treat-

ment. A Villa Park firefighter fell through the stairs of the apartment, was treated and released from the hospital, but did not return to the fire house to complete his shift, Rakosnik said. A Lombard firefighter twisted his knee and returned to his shift after receiving treatment.

Flames from the fire were contained to the stairwell and the building’s laundry room. The fire was struck out at 1:11 p.m. and damage was estimated at between $80,000 and $100,000, but still is under investigation.

The building was deemed uninhabitable, because of smoke damage. Representatives from the American Red Cross were on the scene assisting displaced residents, Rakosnik said.

Titan was reunited with his owner after spending a little time bonding with members of the Villa Park fire and police departments.

“The dog didn’t know any of the guys, and then he was their best friend,” Rakosnik said.

He was preceded in death by his father, Joe, and all his grandparents.

Superlative experience awaits at prasino LA GRANGE – The western suburbs are full of amazing, unique restaurants, and La Grange has become known as a dining destination. Still, there aren’t many places like prasino, located just across the street from its sister restaurant, the beer and gastropub haven called Wild Monk.

Restaurants such as prasino abound in big cities, where culinary trends gravitate toward sustainable, seasonal and local with chef-centric menus appealing to a foodie crowd. A dish is displayed simply and beautifully, all of it begging to be Instagrammed (of which I’m guilty).

The word “prasino” means green in Greek, and the restaurant takes the sentiment to heart, focusing on ingredients that are organic and hormoneand antibiotic-free. On the menu is a key that identifies the letters next to food and drink items to let diners know what’s vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free.

My dining companion and I began our meal with a pan of absolutely outstanding, fresh and delicately flavored mussels. I love mussels – I know not all do – but if you want to give them a spin, prasino is a good place to try. The mussels are steamed in the pan, bathed in a white wine, garlic, butter and herb broth, where the garlic does not overpower, and the flavor is light and rewarding.

The grilled bread is smokey and great for soaking up the flavor.

For our second course, we decided to try one of several flatbread offerings on the menu. We went for the farm flatbread, made with a blend of cheeses, sprinkled with chives and drizzled with truffle honey. If you like honey in your Greek yogurt, you’ll like this.

The creamy and sweet combination works well together atop cracker-thin flatbread that’s perfectly crispy on the edges, with just a little chew in the center.

Before moving on to the final course, I’ll take a moment to discuss the cocktail menu

The germain and juice cocktail at prasino is a perfect concoction of Hendrick’s Gin, St. Germain, grapefruit, lemon and agave. at prasino, which, like everything else, exceeds expectation. We ordered two: the urban and the germain and juice.

The urban, made with rye whiskey, St. Germain, apple juice, lemon and Baked Apple bitters was a little on the sweet side for me, but I like my whiskey beverage full flavored. For most, it would be just right. I

Quarterback expects to put up big points

By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com VILLA PARK – Brian Johnson returns for his second season as the starting quarterback for Willowbrook. A year ago, the senior helped lead the Warriors to their first playoff appearance since 2007.

Schmid: What do you take away from last year’s success?

Johnson: Basically getting used to winning. Last year we had success and learning how to win from last year will carry over to this year. We want to stay on that path.

Schmid: Is the excitement level rising for the start of the 2013 season?

Johnson: We are really

We started school a little earlier than usual so we have to wait a week for our first game.

The excitement is building up even more. We are itching to get out there.

Schmid: How did the offseason go?

Johnson: It was good. We had guys in there, working hard and getting better. We want to carry that winning

attitude into this year.

Schmid: What do you expect from your offense this fall?

Johnson: I expect it to be pretty similar to last year – quick paced and we should put up some points. We’ve got a couple of returners and also a group of guys who are going to prove themselves. They have been proving themselves through camp.

The Rams had trouble slowing down Willowbrook’s offense in 2012 and it could be more of the same this time around as returning quarterback Brian Johnson and running back Jeremy Barnes are the main threats. Glenbard East’s Illinois State-bound safety, Javon York, will do his best to shut them down.

Santaromita: With all the returners back, is there a lot of confidence with this group?

Wislek: We’re all excited to be out here. It’s a complete difference from last year. Last year practice was dead. This year we’re always excited to be out here and we’re always flying around and having fun.

Santaromita: How do you try to come back from a 2-7 season?

Wislek: We’re the type of team that’s not going to look

Santaromita: What stands out about this team?

Wislek: We never give up.

We’re never down like we were last year. We’re always excited to be out here and playing. We’ve got a lot more depth than last year.

Santaromita: What are you looking forward to most about your senior season?

Wislek: It’s bittersweet. I am not looking forward to college. I love high school way too much. I always talked about how I was so excited for senior year and now it’s here.
