“What the ground gives is a reaction,” she said. “That counter-force puts strain on the muscle joints.”

By reducing the weight of the patient’s lower extremities, an anti-gravity treadmill lessens the impact of steps while the patient exercises the muscle.

“The ground is giving you less pressure, so you are putting less pressure on your joint,” Yap said.

Yap said it is also beneficial for elderly patients with arthritis and joint problems.

“It helps a lot,” she said.

“You have to be very understanding with [elderly patients] in how far they can walk. You have to correct their walking pattern. It is so hard because they are limited with the tolerance of pain and tolerance of activities themselves.”

Meister said she will need to have surgery on her right knee next year and is looking forward to using the anti-gravity treadmill again.

“It’s a tremendous feeling,” she said. “When you live with pain and there isn’t a moment that you’re not in pain ... and then you come and you are able to walk upright. To me, that was an amazing feat.”

LEMONT – Lemont resident Anwar Dihan, 42, faces multiple charges after allegedly transporting 240 cartons of Missouri tax stamp cigarettes on Aug. 21, according to police reports.

He is charged with possession of contraband cigarettes and transportation of unstamped cigarettes with intention to evade Anwar Dihan cigarette taxes, said a spokesperson with the Illinois Attorney General’s office.

Dihan was traveling north on I-55 near the Des Plaines River bridge in Will County when he was pulled over for speeding in a construction zone, said Illinois State Police Special Agent Jorge Fonseca.

After Dihan agreed to a vehicle search, the officer found cigarettes, as well as hundreds of containers of baby formula, Fonseca said. Police are still investigating the origin of the formula, which had no proof of purchase.

Fonseca said Dihan also allowed police to search a storage facility in Bridgeview that contained another 130 packs of cigarettes and more than $12,000.

According to the Will County Sheriff’s website, Dihan has been released on $10,000 bond.

His next court date is Thursday, Sept. 12, at the Will County Courthouse.

LEMONT – When Judy Meister, 66, of Lockport, needed surgery on her left knee, she was unsure what to expect from the rehabilitation process.

Thanks in part to a new anti-gravity treadmill at the Lemont Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center, she said she could not be happier with her experience.

The center began using the Alter G Anti-Gravity Treadmill the week of May 13. It looks like a normal treadmill, with the exception of a large plastic bubble that encases the user’s lower body.

According to Cindy Yap, a physical therapist at the center, the machine uses differential air pressure to decrease the weight of the patient’s lower extremities.

This allows patients to walk for longer amounts of time without feeling pain.

“It doesn’t put too much stress on the joint,” she said. “We are able to correct the way the patients are walking and get them to walk more.”

Lemont man charged with smuggling cigarettes

Village delays bridge repairs due to unexpected cost

By DAN FARNHAM dfarnham@shawmedia.com LEMONT – The village of Lemont will rebid its planned bridge repairs for fiscal 2014 after the lowest bid on the project was almost twice as much as the estimated cost the village

had budgeted for it.

The Lemont Village Board voted to reject the bids during its meeting.

The bridges scheduled for repair are at Stephen Street over the I&M Canal, Old Lemont Road over the Des Plaines River, Ed Bossert Drive over

the I&M Canal and Derby Road over Pine Needles Drive.

The village engineering consultants estimated the repairs would cost about $241,000, but the lowest construction company bid was $460,166. Other bids came in at $505,000, $598,000 and $682,000.

“I believe it was the timing of the bid that caused it to be off,” said Public Works Director Ralph Pukula, in reference to the bids being placed near the end of construction season.

He said sometimes construction companies are not looking for more work at the point in the calendar year when the bidding occurred, and will not take on another project unless it is for a high price.

Village Administrator George Schafer did not discount that the estimate may have been inaccurate.

“The estimate was low.

Maybe the engineer underestimated the scope of work, and that resulted in a higher bid,”

he said.

The village will rebid the project near the end of the year and hopes to start construction in the spring.

Schafer said none of the necessary repairs are urgent enough that waiting another season would cause a problem.

One of the options discussed during the board’s Committee of the Whole meeting Aug. 19 was reducing the scope of the bridge repairs.

Schafer said the board did not want to skip any repairs that might cause larger problems in the future.

“If we’re going to invest in these repairs, let’s make sure we do it right,” he said.

Canal Street resurfacing, First Street widening also approved at Monday meeting

By DAN FARNHAM LEMONT – The Lemont Village passed two ordinances for special use of land that clear the way for a new parking lot on Cass Avenue for St. Patrick Church and a school bus terminal to occupy a vacant property on Lemont Road.

Both were passed unanimously during the board’s Monday meeting. Lemont Mayor Brian Reaves and trustee Jeanette Virgilio were not in attendance.

The school bus yard drew

some concern at the meeting from Lemont residents Nick and Donna Schmit, who worried it would increase bus traffic in town and be an eye sore that would drive down property values.

A representative with the bus company, Cook - Illinois Corporation, said the buses – which service districts in Downers Grove, Glen Ellyn and Hinsdale – would not need to travel through downtown Lemont. He also said the company had agreed to do some landscape work on the property.

The board also approved bids on two construction projects that will begin in mid September and finish in October and will cost more than $400,000 combined.

The First Street widening and resurfacing project will cost about $186,000 and will include the paving of First Street, north of Berkeley Lane to the existing curb and gutter, and the widening of First Street, between Schultz Street and McCarthy Road.

Village Administrator George Schafer said the village will also be installing a

sidewalk on the west side of First Street, north from Schultz Street to Bethany Lutheran Cemetery.

The Canal Street improvements project will cost about $232,000 and will include replacing the street’s curb, gutter and paver brick and resurfacing the road from Lemont to Stephen streets.

The board voted five in favor of the First Street bid and four in favor of the Canal Street bid. Trustee Rick Sniegowski abstained from the Canal Street vote due to a potential conflict of interest.

Both accepted bids cost more than engineer estimates anticipated.

Public Works Director Ralph Pukula said that bids made at the end of construction season are often higher in price.

“I also believe it was the timing of the bid,” he said.

“Everyone is trying to finish up quick.”

Village Administrator George Schafer said the village has extra money in its construction budget because it is delaying its bridge repairs.

Hit the gas on speed limit increases To the Editor: The recently signed 70 mph speed limit bill begins to undo the damage done by the national 55 mph limit established in 1973.

After reading the recent Illinois speed limit bill and discussing it with sponsor Jim Oberweis, it is clear to me that the bill was intended to cover, and should apply to, metro Chicago.

IDOT and the county boards should stand aside and allow metro Chicago limits to revert to 70 mph. All the evidence indicates that there would be no negative impact on safety.

Overall, metro Chicago highway safety would be improved. Here’s why: Only 11 percent of fatalities occur on Illinois interstates.

Higher speed limits on interstates help draw traffic away from secondary highways that are more dangerous.

Most drivers, including the police, ignore posted limits.

Higher interstate speed limits improve safety by reducing speed variance, road

rage and weaving.

Under-posted speed limits breed disrespect for all laws and leave drivers bored, unengaged and distracted.

Insurers and others who profit from speeding tickets tend to cite studies that count the raw number of fatalities rather than looking at the rate per mile driven. The actual fatality rate has fallen steadily for decades.

Higher limits reduce congestion and may save fuel by allowing drivers to keep a steadier pace.

Beginning Jan. 1, 2014, unlucky drivers who “go with the flow” of average traffic speeds could pay a $1,500 fine and go to prison for 6 months. If nothing changes, that will be the penalty for going 81 mph in metro Chicago.

It is absolutely critical that Chicago area interstate speed limits be set properly. The 55 limit is a bad joke and the notion of going to jail for 81 is asinine.

It’s time we put an end to it.

Oakwood School in Lemont is celebrating its student body’s diversity with an artistic new addition to the building – a mural painted by an Oakwood parent. The piece, created by Arsa Ibianskas, spells out the word “hello” in six languages and depicts children holding hands and encircling the globe. The mural was painted the week of Aug. 12 and will no doubt brighten the school days of Oakwood students from all cultural backgrounds. We commend Ibianskas for her initiative and creativitiy.

Great day for kids I attended my first Kops N Kidz day on Aug. 10 [in Lemont]. I would like to compliment the Park District, police officers, donors and volunteers. I thought that it was a great outing. I was surprised to see that everything was free for the kids. It is wonderful that all families, regardless of their financial situation, were able to take their kids to have a good time.

I live on Springwood Lane in Bolingbrook. Comcast invaded the neighborhood this morning with three or four trucks and equipment to run a new line.

None of the neighbors were aware of this, and all they’re doing is tearing up their grass.

Here we go again. The General Assembly and governor passed a bill to enable DuPage to enact their own stormwater fees based on property owners’ rainwater displacement. The law permitted Peoria property owners to vote on whether or not to be taxed for this on top of their ongoing property taxes.

The law did not give DuPage citizens the same right to vote.

Now our county has to decide if it will or will not decrease our property taxes when it starts charging us another tax on stormwater on top of Downers Grove’s already existing tax on the same stormwater on the same properties. Welcome to Illinois.

District 210 board planning meeting to fill vacancy SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA LEMONT – The Lemont High School District 210 Board of Education will hold a special meeting to name a new board member before the Sept.

11 deadline to fill the vacancy.

George Rimbo, who took over as chief of the Lemont Fire Protection District, formally resigned from the board during its Aug. 19 meeting.

The board held a closed session meeting on Aug. 29 to discuss the open position.

Tony Hamilton, director of school and community re-

lations for the district, said the meeting to name the new member has not been scheduled yet but the board member will be installed in time to take part in the Sept. 16 meeting.

Rimbo was elected to a second four year term in April.

His replacement will serve a two year term, after which another two year term will be open for election in the spring of 2015.

State code dictates that the board has 45 days to fill a vacancy after it has been notified of the resignation.

Garibay leaves legacy with law enforcement, arts communities

Garibay was a former Lemont Liquor Commissioner, Will County Deputy Sheriff and president of the Lemont Law Enforcement Association.

He was also involved in the Lemont Artists Guild and the Lemont Historical Society.

Garibay was a veteran of the Korean Conflict and worked as an entrepreneur and artist. He also spent his free time as an amateur radio operator.

She said he was a kind, considerate man who she loved to talk to.

“He was really dedicated in so many ways to his own art but also to promoting others’ art,” Popp said.

LEMONT – Of all the elements at Lemont’s 65th annual Keepataw Days Festival, the one event organizer Mike Carey wants to see the most is sunshine.

Attendance at Keepataw Days has been marred by rain the past two years, he said, which limited the amount of money that the Keepataw Days Festival Committee was able to raise.

The money is necessary to pay for next year’s festival and the committee’s charitable donations.

“We’re just looking forward to some nice weather and local people coming out and having a good time,” he said.

The four day festival features carnival rides, games, food, live entertainment, a beer garden with guest bartenders and a Labor Day parade.

Attendees should not expect many changes from the previous years, Carey said.

“We got a few new bands,” he said. “The carnival has a few new rides. Other than that, the layout is pretty much the same.”

The parade will have a “Retro ’60s” theme.

“This is our 65th year, so we thought it was something appropriate,” Carey said.

Because of the number of votes received, the parade will have two grand marshals: Lemont Township Supervisor Steven Rosendahl and Lemont Fire Protection District Board of Commissioners Chairman Gary Krueger.

Krueger is a veteran of the parade, but this will be his first time as grand marshal.

“Being in the parade is no big deal for me. I’ve been in every one except one,” he said.

He said he was pleasantly surprised to be selected as a grand marshal and is looking forward to the experience.

Rosendahl, who nominated Krueger for the title, said he is honored to be participating in one of Lemont’s richest traditions.

Lemont woman volunteers to save birds

By DAN FARNHAM dfarnham@shawmedia.com LEMONT — Kelly Kwasniewski has a passion for birds and a desire to help those in need.

That’s why she volunteers with the Chicago Bird Collision Monitors, a group that patrols Chicago during migration seasons, looking for birds that have been hurt or killed from flying into windows.

“I care about the birds,” she said. “They always get hurt in the city, always get smashed in the windows. I just feel bad for them. I just want to help them out.”

Kwasniewski, a lifelong resident of Lemont, learned about the CBCM through her friend, Julie Biedess, who volunteers at the Willowbrook Wildlife Center in Glen Ellyn.

The CBCM transports injured birds that are native to Illinois to the center.

“She’s come to visit me at Willowbrook,” Biedess said.

“She has seen a lot of the birds there. That’s when she started

Migration periods are six to eight weeks during the spring and fall. The monitors made their first fall outing on Aug. 18.

Monitors start at sunrise and can work four or more hours. The groups are divided into two coverage areas: one around the lakefront and another farther west, near the Daley Center.

Injured birds are transported to various care centers,

where they are evaluated and either released or given treatment. Dead birds are given to the Field Museum in Chicago.

Kwasniewski and other volunteers have been trained to handle birds that have been stunned or injured.

She said the first step is to catch the bird with a net. The bird is put in a brown paper bag, which is closed with a paper clip. The time and place the bird was found is written on the bag.

Kwasniewski said she does not find injured or dead birds every time out.

“If they’re there, I help them,” she said. “If they’re not there, that’s better.”

Though she likes all kinds of birds, Kwasniewski said she was scared one time when she was transporting an injured woodpecker.

“I felt like it was going to peck me or something,” she said. “I was getting like ‘Oh God, please don’t let him come out.’”

Superlative experience awaits at prasino LA GRANGE – The western suburbs are full of amazing, unique restaurants, and La Grange has become known as a dining destination. Still, there aren’t many places like prasino, located just across the street from its sister restaurant, the beer and gastropub haven called Wild Monk.

Restaurants such as prasino abound in big cities, where culinary trends gravitate toward sustainable, seasonal and local with chef-centric menus appealing to a foodie crowd. A dish is displayed simply and beautifully, all of it begging to be Instagrammed (of which I’m guilty).

The word “prasino” means green in Greek, and the restaurant takes the sentiment to heart, focusing on ingredients that are organic and hormoneand antibiotic-free. On the menu is a key that identifies the letters next to food and drink items to let diners know what’s vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free.

My dining companion and I began our meal with a pan of absolutely outstanding, fresh and delicately flavored mussels. I love mussels – I know not all do – but if you want to give them a spin, prasino is a good place to try. The mussels are steamed in the pan, bathed in a white wine, garlic, butter and herb broth, where the garlic does not overpower, and the flavor is light and rewarding.

The grilled bread is smokey and great for soaking up the flavor.

For our second course, we decided to try one of several flatbread offerings on the menu. We went for the farm flatbread, made with a blend of cheeses, sprinkled with chives and drizzled with truffle honey. If you like honey in your Greek yogurt, you’ll like this.

The creamy and sweet combination works well together atop cracker-thin flatbread that’s perfectly crispy on the edges, with just a little chew in the center.

Most impressively, the Indians have outscored the opposition by a 329-6 margin during those contests.

Having said all that, this promises to be a much stiffer test for a Lemont team that lacks experience. For the first time in recent history, the Indians have more questions than answers, especially on the offensive side of the ball where just one starter returns.

The Cougars narrowly missed out on the postseason a year ago, losing two out of their final three games to fall short. But the squad is expected to be improved in 2013. Keep an eye on linebacker Clifton Garrett, who has nearly 30 scholarship offers and is considered one of the top recruits in the country.
