Orchard Bridge traffic to move through Sept. 6 Northbound and southbound traffic over the Orchard Bridge will be moved to the outside lanes through Friday, Sept. 6, weather permitting, to allow crews access to the center portion of the bridge. Two lanes in each direction will be maintained during this portion of the project, according to a news release

from the Kane County Division of Transportation. During construction, it is anticipated the on and off ramps to and from Interstate 88 remain open for motorists’ daily use. Construction will not impede the use of the bridge for daily travel located between Sullivan Road in Aurora and Oak Street in North Aurora. Residents are urged to pay attention to the new lane configurations and watch for equipment and workers entering and leaving the work zone. Delta Dental to kick off grants program

Public can aid HELP by recycling cartridges

The Delta Dental of Illinois Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Delta Dental of Illinois, is kicking off its annual community grants program to provide funding for programs and organizations that improve the oral health of children within the state. The foundation will award grants of $1,000 to $10,000 to nonprofit organizations that provide oral health education and/or access to oral health resources to Illinois children. The foundation will be distributing a total of $100,000 in grants. Criteria and an online application are available at http://deltadentalil.com/ddilfoundation/what-we-do/community-grants. Applications must be submitted by Sept. 3. Illinois public charities that are classified as exempt from federal income taxes under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and public or governmental entities, such as a public schools or health departments, are eligible and encouraged to apply.

CHARLES – The public can aid HELP – Homes for Endangered and Lost Pets – by recycling old or empty inkjet and laser printer cartridges, toner cartridges, cellphones, laptops and small electronics. The items can be from personal or business use, they can be working or broken. HELP volunteers will collect them and receive cash that can be put toward the charity’s work in providing foster homes and veterinary care for cats and dogs. Items should be put in a plastic bag and left in any HELP donation drop off boxes, located at St. Charles Veterinary Clinic, 530 Dunham Road, St. Charles; Gateway Veterinary Clinic, 3225 W. By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com CAMPTON HILLS – Dick Royce hasn’t changed much from when he was 12, ready and willing to give away ice cream from his bicycle version of the Good Humor truck.

Then, his generosity got him fired after three days.

Now at 65, the Campton Hills retiree can – and does – give away as many ice cream bars, cones and sandwiches as he wants. After several years of searching, Royce bought his own 1969 Ford Good Humor truck last year from a family in Avon, Conn., and, after minor improvements, had the vehicle ready by about April.

“We got lucky,” Royce said, explaining he was wrong in thinking he would find a Good Humor truck right away. “We got really lucky.”

Although Royce will give away ice cream – to kids with their parents’ permission and to others who look like they could use a smile – he sells the frozen treats for $2 at special events, such as car shows, community concerts and

block parties.

Initially, he said, he thought one event a week would be great. But word of the Good Humor Man has spread, he said, and his calendar is so full that he has to turn down requests.

“I’m afraid to do advertising,” said Royce, who even dresses in the traditional Good Humor Man uniform of a white shirt, blue bow tie, pants and a hat.

Taking only enough profits to cover his costs, Royce said he donates the rest to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or charities his clients support.

Royce, who has survived two bouts of cancer, said it means a lot that he and his wife, Susan, can do something

for someone else.

“I’m lucky to be here,” he said.

His wife has been incredibly supportive, he said. He said he thought she would think he was crazy when he brought up the idea five years ago as they were celebrating 35 years of marriage. She helps at events when she can, he said.

“I am having the time of my life,” Royce said, adding it’s a lot of fun to make people smile.

His new role also adds to the fun of being a grandfather, he said. His oldest grandchild, 3-year-old Bradley DeAngelis, likes to tell other kids what ice cream they can buy, he said.

“He’s my little helper,”

Royce said, noting his other grandchildren are Kaliana DeAngelis and John Paul Kottke.

As much as Royce enjoys being the Good Humor Man, don’t ask him to play the truck’s music. He hated it growing up, he said.

And if you’ve requested a flavor that has been pushed to the back of the freezer, be patient. Royce carries about 1,200 treats in the truck and will dig around for the dessert kids have their hearts set on, he said.

“I don’t want to disappoint anybody,” he said.

He, however, said he doesn’t eat the ice cream. He’s diabetic.

“I can’t eat any of it,” he said. “It’s willpower.”

Serious skaters discover serious fun at skate parks the park has a loyal following of skaters and fans. So when the park district needed to renovate Erika the facilities Young and update the design, they turned first to the people who knew it best – the skaters themselves.

“We reached out to the skateboard community and invited them to a meeting to get their feedback on the skate park’s renovation,” Rudow said.

Twenty-seven young people showed up, an impressive response. Participants were shown the design options under consideration – things like half pipes, quarter pipes, grinding rails and bank ramps – and asked to assign a priority value to each.

“They basically designed the skate park,” Rudow said.

Each skate park is inspected on a daily basis for safety and cleanliness, and each spring a “Skate Park Challenge and Bash” is held at Mt. St. Mary Park where skaters strut their most impressive stunts.

But you don’t have to be a tournament-level skater to use the skate parks. The park district offers lessons at the East Side Sports Complex from 4 to 5 p.m. Tuesdays for children ages 5 to 7, and from 5 to 7 p.m. for kids ages 7 and older. These programs demon-

strate basic skills and stress safety and use of protective equipment, such as helmets, knee pads and wrist guards.

As children transition to their teen and young-adult years, swing sets, jungle gyms and slides get replaced with grind boxes, bowls and planters, and the park district’s skate parks happily offer another sort of playground to grow up in.

Quarter pipes and grind rails, maul pads and flat wedges. The lingo associated with skate parks is as imaginative and evocative as the sport of skateboarding itself. Discriminating skaters in the St. Charles area are totally stoked to know that the St. Charles Park District’s three skate parks are about as righteous as they come.

Located at the East Side Sports Complex, River Bend Community Park and Mt. St. Mary Park, all three of the district’s skate parks boast the kinds of features, ramps and obstacles that serious skaters demand, and that attract new fans to the sport. The East Side Sports Complex skate park also is available for use by BMX bikers Tuesday and Thursday evenings after 5 p.m.

“There’s a lot that goes into making a good skate park,” said Laura Rudow, superintendent of parks and planning. “There is a method to the order in which things are positioned, such as how far apart a grind rail is separated from a quarter pipe so you can build up a certain amount of speed.”

For all three parks, the park district used the services of a professional skate park designer to make sure all options were considered.

Of the three skate parks, Mt. St. Mary is the oldest and remains the most used. Easily accessible to town residents,

Project Mobility seeks entries for giveaway

Everybody Rides is just that: an event where everybody, disabled and abled alike, can participate, Simmons said. She noted Project Mobility will supply adaptive bikes

to those who need them.

Registration is $25 through Friday, Aug. 30, after which it increases to $35. Family prices are available. Participants can register for a 10-mile family trail ride or rides of varying lengths on country roads.

The event begins at James O. Breen Community Park at the corner of Campton Hills and Peck roads in St. Charles. Food, drinks, raffles, games and entertainment are planned at the park after the ride.

An adaptive bike valued at more than $3,000 will be given away at the event.

Project Mobility is asking people to submit their stories about how this bike would change their life or the life of someone they know. Whoever gets the most Facebook “Likes” will win the bike.

“It’s a fun way to get people engaged in it,” Simmons said, adding that a lot of people don’t realize what the families go through and how much more expensive everything is for them.

GENEVA – For every pound of Dietz & Watson deli meat and cheese bought at Jewel-Osco stores, the Philadelphia-based meat producer will donate a half-pound of its meat or cheese to Northern Illinois Food Bank in Geneva.

Consumers have until Friday, Sept. 13, to buy a pound so the food bank can get a half-pound donation. The goal is 20,000 pounds of meat and cheese, spokesman Steve Riley said.

“We approached the food bank and we approached Jewel because we wanted to do something for the community,” Riley said. “Whenever we are in a new community, we reach out and do some community-related event to show we care.”

“It’s healthy, fresh meat and cheese that really can help families provide lunches to their kids during the school year. It’s such a great donation.”

Food bank spokeswoman Donna Larkin Lake said the promotion, with its promise of 20,000 pounds of deli meat and cheese, was coming just in time for its clients.

“We are very excited about it,” Larkin said. “When kids are going back to school

and moms are packing lunches – it’s protein. It’s healthy, fresh meat and cheese that really can help families provide lunches to their kids during the school year. It’s such a great donation.”

Northern Illinois Food Bank works with 800 food programs in a 13-county area.

Dietz & Watson was founded 75 years ago and is in its fourth generation of family ownership, Riley said. The brand is noted for not using artificial colors, flavors, fillers, extenders or MSG. The company also was noted for meeting the National Salt Reduction Initiative standards by offering lower sodium products since 1979.

Into many kinds of music St. Charles singer, songwriter and guitar player likes to inspire his audience

Keen, 23, of St. Charles, said he’s written reggae, rock, gospel, folk rock, rhythm and blues, rap and country songs since he started playing music at age 10.

“I’m a singer first and foremost,” he said. “ ... I spent a year in a gospel choir in Chicago.”

His musical influences are just as diverse as the spectrum of genres he plays. They include Ben Harper, The Doors, Frank Sinatra, Dr. John and Beethoven.

“I pride myself in that. if I hear a song, I like to know who’s playing it,” he said.

Keen recently took home a $2,000 prize after winning the Claddagh’s Got Talent competition at Claddagh Irish Pub in Geneva, and he’s scheduled to perform at upcoming local shows.

Andrea Lay, manager at Claddagh Iris Pub in Geneva, said about 60 area performers participated in the eight-week contest, and the winner was announced earlier this month. “[The judges] loved him,” she said. “He did original songs; he did cover songs; and he had a lot more passion doing it. That was kind of one of the things they truly appreciated.”

Keen is no stranger to talent competitions. He was a contestant on NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” show in the fifth season, which aired in 2010. He was among about 100 acts to advance to Las Vegas for a performance, although he didn’t take home

He said his music is about inspiring people to feel something.

“My focus is on the audience, but it’s not about impressing them,” he said, “but it’s about

taking them with me.”

He said he likes the concept of everyone in the audience being in the same moment when he performs.

That’s harder to do in the age where cellphones, social media and the Internet constantly are at everyone’s fingertips, he said.

He noted that it’s easy, especially for the current generation, to be taken out of the moment because they’re more apt to reach for their cellphones to snap a photo or update a Facebook sta-

tus.

“My mom turned me onto the idea of mental pictures,” he said.

Keen said he often plays hourslong sets without taking a break. Sometimes he performs with his band – a drummer and a bass player – and said he has written more than 500 songs.

“I have seven albums on my computer ready to be recorded,” he said.

He said his lyrics give his songs a “tense” feel, though the melody might be upbeat. He said

he’s inspired by the macabre and death, but also writes about people he knows and tries to keep the lyrics simple.

“You don’t have to way overwrite,” he said. “You’re never going to connect that way.”

Keen has two upcoming local performances scheduled. The first is at 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept.

5, at EvenFlow Music & Spirits, 302 W. State St., Geneva, and the second is at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, at Claddagh Irish Pub, 1702 Commons Drive, Geneva.

JG: All four of us went to Indiana University in Bloomington, and we all have classical performance degrees. We decided that we really wanted to start writing our own music, and that happened to come out basically as folk music as a result of our different influences and passions and upbringing.

Jordana Greenberg: One of the things we love about playing festivals is getting to hear all of the other musicians.

Before we were full-time performing musicians, we spent a good amount of our time going to music festivals.

It was one of my favorite things and still is, but I just do it in a slightly different capacity now. As a performer, I go and do my performance, and then after that, I get to become a spectator. And they’re equally as much fun.

Nashville-based Harpeth Rising is one of the acts that will perform Sunday, Sept. 1, and Monday, Sept. 2, at the Folk Valley Music and Storytelling Festival at Island Park in Geneva.

And then we headed to Hawaii and ended up picking [up] a whole bunch of regular gigs there. So, we stayed for a year in Hawaii, playing about five times a week.

We started writing songs and began figuring out what we wanted to sound like.

ES: On your latest CD, “The End of the World,” you are collaborating with your dad, David Greenberg.

JG: He’s a really amazing singer/songwriter. He’s been writing since he was a kid.

I have memories of hearing him write songs and then playing them for me. And then it sort of seemed imperative to me when we started performing that we do some of his stuff.

We loved it, and our fans loved it. So, we decided to make an album of songs by

him.

ES: Your playing style is rather unique. You kind of developed your own style.

JG: I think we all have in a sense, because of our classical training. I get asked a lot whether I am a violinist or a fiddler. The answer, I think, totally depends on what song we’re playing.

I haven’t studied bluegrass fiddling in the same way that I’ve classical music. So, I tend to be a little more comfortable in a slightly more classical style, but I incorporate a lot of techniques from modern fiddling playing.

If we’re doing a song that requires sort of more rocktype feel to it, I’ll even do things that end up sounding sort of like an electric guitar.

So, you sort of develop according to what the song needs.

SPORTS&REC Half marathon often used as training for full marathon

By JARED BIRCHFIELD BATAVIA – Similar to the Kane County Cougars being a stepping stone to the major leagues, the Peapod Half Marathon Aug. 25 prepared competitors for the ultimate in running – a full marathon.

Many runners in the 13.1 mile race, won by Lars Juhl of Chicago, used the race to get ready for marathons in October, said race director Danny Delgado.

“This race has built a reputation as a great warm up for Chicago and Milwaukee marathons,” Delgado said.

“We have runners from 10 different states and all over the Chicagoland area.”

Runners took a slightly different course than in the past few years to avoid blocking Main Street.

“The course got faster,” Delgado said. “We eliminated the hill up Houston [Street] and the last two-and-a-half miles are all downhill” Surprisingly, results were higher. Juls, who took third in 2010, crossed the finish line in 1 hour, 14 minutes and .06 of a second, 4:30 off of last year’s top time of 1:09:36.

Joshua Stein of Forest Park came in second at 1:15:37, and Bolingbrook’s Nathan Kennedy time of 1:17:08 earned him third place.

Amanda Hooper took top honors among the female runners. The Carpentersville resident finished in 1:25:44, a minute and half slower than the best female time in 2012.

Geneva’s Elena Shemyakina took second in 1:26:17.

Third place went to Ashley Molidor of Downer Grove, who finished in 1:26:41.

“It’s my personal best so I’m happy with it,” said Shemyakina, who estimated that she has run in 25 half marathons and 34 full ones. “It’s pretty good when you get [a personal record] at 54.”

Oliver Bohac, 10, of Batavia, the race’s youngest runner, finished in 2:19:54 to earn fourth place in the males 19 and younger division. It was his third half marathon.

“My time was a very big improvement over the first two,” the fifth-grader said.

Chuck Amenta of Geneva said the race was a great tuneup for a marathon.

“A bunch of my triathlon friends use this race as a long training run for the marathons,” said Amenta as he cheered his friends on from Church Street.

This year’s half marathon is the fifth time Peapod, an online grocery delivery service headquartered in Skokie, sponsored the event.

“Peapod is a local company so we wanted to be part of the community,” Peapod spokesman Brad Porter said. “This a good venue to become part of the community so that is why Lars Juhl of Chicago was the first to cross the finish line during the Peapod Half Marathon on Aug. 25 in Batavia. have sponsored it.”

he ocean: It’s deep, dark, mysterious and illed with life. Creatures of the sea vary greatly ?— from some of the smallest organisms on Earth to some of the biggest — and range from the truly harmless to the seriously dangerous.

1: I’m pretty scary-looking — you can tell where I get my name from taking one look at the long, sharp fangs that burst out of my mouth. I use these teeth to catch smaller fish that swim by me, and I live in the depths of the ocean. What am I?

2: I look to be part octopus and part squid, with eight red and brown tentacles and a squid-like body. I am known for living my life in the dark depths of the ocean, and because of that, I have very large eyes: The largest eyes compared to body size, in fact, of any known animal in the world. Although I am a carnivore, I don’t want to suck your blood. What am I?

3: I’m rarely seen by humans because I live in the deepest, darkest corners of the ocean. Some scientists refer to me as a living fossil, because I am very similar to my prehistoric ancestors.

I look like a giant eel, but I have many rows of teeth, like a shark. What am I?
