Savannah Kleiner entered the pageant circuit to get out of her comfort zone.

Two crowns later, the Lake in the Hills resident will represent McHenry County at the Miss Illinois County Fair Pageant in January.

The Huntley High School graduate started with the Miss Lake in the Hills Pageant in the spring, an experience aimed at improving her interviewing and public speaking skills before college.

The crowning in Lake in the Hills and subsequent scholarship money landed the 18-year-old in the Miss McHenry County Fair Pageant. A victory there punched her ticket to Springfield, where she will compete against about 70 other girls for the title of Miss Illinois County Fair.

When she’s not preparing for competition, Kleiner works as a camp counselor at Lifetime Fitness in Algonquin.

Now a freshman at Butler University, she is studying strategic communications and marketing in the hope of heading off to law school to become an attorney.

The county queen spoke with reporter Lawerence Synett about pageants, breaking out of her shell, and her fear of tripping on stage.

Synett: What made you want to compete in the Miss Lake in the Hills Pageant and did you expect to win?

Kleiner: I thought it would be a really good opportunity to step outside of my comfort zone and put myself out there because I’ve never really been any good at public speaking or the interview process. It takes a lot to get up on stage and talk in front of people, walk in front of everyone with a bathing suit on. Those are things I wouldn’t have typically done before. I was in shock when I won. I didn’t see it coming.

Synett: How was the Miss McHenry County Pageant experience?

Kleiner: I feel so blessed and humbled. I was beside myself when I won, but it was such a learning experience. I learned what beauty really means. It’s not about being pretty or having the nicest dress on; it’s about inner beauty.

That is what I took away from it all.

Synett: Are you nervous about the state competition?

Kleiner: Yeah, because that is a whole new level of competition. I’m always concerned about the judging process, but I am really going to focus on the interviewing portion. I am going to delve into everything beforehand.

generally a “hot mess.” I’m tripping and falling all the time. It’s a blessing I haven’t fallen on stage.

Synett: Do you feel you have changed

as a person since the first competition?

Kleiner: I don’t necessarily think I am a changed person, but I think I am a better person. I took a lot out of this. In Lake in the Hills, it was about the competitors joining together to raise money for the scholarships that were later awarded to the winners. At the county level, it was about forming friendships and working hard to win.

Synett: Depending on what happens at the state competition, do you still plan on competing in pageants?

Kleiner: Whatever happens at state, I would still love to continue doing them in the future. I have gotten so much out of them, so why not? We will see what the future holds for me.

Deer Path of Huntley provides an affordable assisted living community for adults HUNTLEY – Residents will began moving Friday into Deer Path of Huntley, an affordable assisted living community for physically disabled adults – one of seven such facilities in the state and the only one in the northwest suburbs.

The more-than-$27 million three-story facility has 128 studio and one-bedroom apartments. Inside the 118,000-square-foot building are features designed specifically for disabled adults ages 22 to 64. It has a pub and billiards room, beauty salon and barber shop, computer lab, physical therapy room, basketball court and a service dog training and washing area.

Each apartment has a kitchenette, bathroom and shower with grab bars and an emergency alert system. Certified nursing assistants, working under the direction of a licensed nurse, will be on-duty at all times.

Demand for this type of housing has been needed, local officials said at an opening event Aug. 21 at Deer Path of Huntley, 12500 Regency Parkway. Nearly 60 percent of the apartments were reserved before it opened, said Rod Burkett, president and CEO of BMA Management Ltd., the company that will manage the facility.

BMA Management, a Bradley-based firm, manages 36 senior living communities, including Heritage Woods of Huntley, which is adjacent to Deer Path.

The facility was built with a combination of public and private money. The Illinois Housing Development Authority provided federal low-income housing tax credits that generated $5.4 million in private equity and the project was financed with $19.7 million in tax-exempt bonds. Developer financing provided an additional $1.78 million. The state Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity’s energy grant fund pitched in $233,600, according to BMA Management and the Illinois

“This property is probably the poster child for private entrepreneurship, federal, state and local government all working together to bring something to fruition that is going to impact the lives of so many people,” Burkett said Thursday. “This collaboration all starts with a private entrepreneur, someone that’s willing to take the risk, someone that’s got the inertia, the momentum to get things moving.”

In the case of Deer Path, the entrepreneurship came from developer Bravo Properties of Oak Brook, Burkett said.

Zach Leonard of Bravo Properties said the project would not have been possible without tax credits.

Few facilities serve disabled adults, said Wayne Smallwood, executive director of the Affordable Assisted Living Coalition, a nonprofit trade association for companies that develop and operate affordable assisted living projects in the state’s Supportive Living Program.

“There are 142 assisted living facilities [in the state], but this is one of only seven that offer services to people aged 22 to 64 with physical disabilities,” Smallwood said. “It’s very special that we do that because we need all the options we can get for housing with services.”

Many people with physical disabilities have few other options for housing, said Smallwood, who as a state employee helped craft the Supportive Living Program.

“We can cater to all income levels,” he said. “People with physical disabilities have often not been able to work or earn enough ... so a model like this is very useful. And it’s excellent use of state tax dollars. Keep in mind that the rate that’s paid to this building represents 54 percent of what would be paid to a nursing home. It’s a great thing. It changes lives.”

Physically disabled adults, including those on Medicaid or who get monthly Social Security benefits, can qualify for residency because Deer Path operates under the state’s Supportive Living Program. Rent-

al costs vary based on the size of the apartment and the financial package that is put together for each resident, said Julie Simpkins, vice president of marketing and sales for BMA Management.

The apartments are available to those earning 60 percent of the area median income or less. That’s $30,960 in Kane County for a one-person household, according to a news release from the Illinois Housing Development Authority.

The state’s Supportive Living Program was developed as an alternative to nursing home care for low-income seniors and those with disabilities.

Program facilities combine “apartment-style housing with personal care and other services” so “residents can live independently and take part in decision-making,” according to the program’s website.

The Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services obtained a waiver to allow payment for services not routinely covered by Medicaid, such as personal care, homemaking, laundry, medi-

cation supervision, social activities, recreation and 24-hour staff. Residents are responsible for paying the cost of room and board at the facility, according to the website.

Officials also touted the development’s economic impact. When fully leased, Deer Path is expected to employ the equivalent of 55 to 60 full-time employees with an estimated annual payroll of $1.5 million, Burkett said.

Huntley Village President Charles Sass welcomed the development. He called it a “beautiful facility.”

David McGrath, 52, said he is excited to move into his apartment at Deer Path. He called the facility “amazing.”

McGrath was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, a progressive nervous system disorder that affects movement, about eight years ago.

For the past two months, he has been living with his mother, Rosemary McGrath, in Sun City Huntley.

Rosemary McGrath, 74, said taking care of her son was becoming too much to handle on her own.

“It was getting to the point where it was more than my body would allow,” she said.

Not wanting to move her son to a nursing home with much older people, Rosemary McGrath found Deer Path a better option. Cost was another factor. David McGrath has no savings and relies on disability benefits, his mother said.

“This is an amazing opportunity for people in this age group to live in a place with so many amenities,” Rosemary McGrath said. “The staff could not be more caring and supportive. I’m so fortunate that my loved one will have all that is offered here.”

While David McGrath knew he didn’t want to live in a nursing home, he initially was wary about living at Deer Path. He didn’t know what to expect, his mother said.

“A lot of people are very hesitant, like David was,” she said. “But once you see this place ... It’s just more than we could ever ask for.”

Road trip tips Millions of Americans are expected to take a vacation this year. If you’re one of those hitting the road, here are a few reminders to help ensure you’re road-tripready.

ationwide, pickuptruck sales have rebounded from the pit of 1.1 million units in 2009 to 1.66 million last year; and pickups are now the No. 4 market segment, making up 11.2 percent of all vehicle sales. This isn’t likely to drop, either (at least until gas hits $5 a gallon again), as the average pickup on the road is 12 years old now and apparently there’s pent-up demand.

Furthermore, crew-cab pickups — the ones with cabins extended for four seats and four doors-were zero percent of the market in 2001, but accounted for more than 60 percent in 2012, and some 30 percent of pickups now sell for more than $40,000.

To Detroit, these trends mean that pickups have become “multipurpose purchases” — working trucks by day, family vehicles by night. Evidently, things have changed since I worked in the woods with a chain saw, wore steel-toe boots to church and drove an old Dodge Power Wagon.

While people tend to look at seat-time as time to relax, your body doesn’t see it that way.

Too much sitting, now referred to as “sitting disease” by experts studying it, can wreak havoc on your body’s metabolic system.

Sitting too much can increase your risk for obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer, depression and a cascade of other health ills. So what can you do?

Find ways to stand more. Global studies show, on average, we sit 7.7 hours a day, and some results estimate people sit up to 15 hours a day. Calculate your daily sitting time and try to reduce it by standing up every hour.

Stand while you are on your computer or when you take a call. If at work, stretch your legs under the desk. Do calf raises. Walk to talk to a coworker or friend instead of sending an email when you can.

Conduct walking meetings. Be creative and find ways to sit less.

Burn more calories.

Yes, standing burns more calories than sitting and can increase energy, tone muscles, improve posture; increase blood flow and ramp up metabolism.

For a full day of work (8 hours), standing might mean 200 or more calories burned.

Create a stand-up desk. You can create a do-it-yourself desk where you can stand up, or check out standing workstations you can buy online.

Sit less even if you work out regularly.

You won’t combat sitting disease with gym time. Studies show that more exercise time may not even cancel out the damage to your body if you sit for eight hours following your workout. The key is to find pockets of time in your day to move.

Although you may not be interested in doing a triathlon, the three activities — running, cycling and swimming — make for excellent cross-training exercises. Cross training refers to different aerobic activities that provide essentially the same cardiovascular conditioning benefits. However, integrating three different endurance exercises into your training programs reduces the risk of both physiological and psychological problems, namely overuse injuries and boredom.

While running and cycling both involve the leg muscles, running emphasizes the rear thigh (hamstrings) muscles, whereas cycling emphasizes the front thigh (quadriceps) muscles. Also, running requires weight-bearing exercise from a standing posture, whereas cycling requires weight-supported exercise from a sitting position.

These activities are therefore highly compatible and complementary from a muscle-use perspective.

Swimming involves both the upper body and legs, but the majority of propulsive power is produced by the chest, back and arm muscles. Unlike running and cycling, swimming is performed from a horizontal body position, and in a fluid medium.

Swimming and cycling eliminate

the landing forces and shock absorption associated with running, which further enhances their value as cross-training activities. When the water becomes too cold for swimming, substitute rowing, canoeing or kayaking.

As a general guideline, I recommend three cross-training sessions a week for beginning exercisers and up to six crosstraining sessions a week for more advanced exercisers. For example, a sensible beginning fitness program may feature cycling on Mondays, swimming on Wednesdays and running on Fridays. A more advanced crosstraining schedule may include cycling on Mondays and Thursdays, swimming on Tuesdays and Fridays, and running on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Swimming tips Whether you prefer pools, lakes or ocean waters, swim with a partner whenever possible.

Also, swimming in shallow (4 to 5 feet) water is always safer than swimming in deep (overhead) water. Swimming parallel to shore makes more sense than swimming out and back in large bodies of water.

Unlike running and cycling, swimmers have several stroke options for exercising in the water. While the crawl stroke is most effective and efficient, periodically interspersing periods of backstroke, breaststroke or sidestroke can make the swimming session more enjoyable by changing the pace, as well as by involving different movement patterns and muscle groups.

Other than a bathing suit, goggles may be your only other investment.

Running tips To reduce shock to the feet, legs and lower back, do most of your running on softer surfaces, such as wooded paths, stone dust jogging paths, grassy athletic fields or composition tracks.

Also, invest in well-designed running shoes that fit properly

(loose in the toe box and snug in the heel) and provide appropriate motion control. Knowledgeable running shoe store personnel can advise you on the best shoe for your foot type.

Try to run during cooler times of day, and in shaded areas whenever possible. Avoid running on the sides of roads and beaches. These sloped surfaces place uneven stress on feet, legs and hips, which increases injury potential. If you run with a friend, your running pace should permit you to converse in short sentences. If you can’t talk, you are running faster than necessary to promote physical fitness.

Cycling tips Although more expensive than a pair of running shoes, a good bicycle is basically a one-time investment that pays years of health/fitness benefits if used properly and regularly. Most cycle shop owners are experts at selecting the bicycle that best fits your cycling needs and body dimensions. Essential cycling accessories include a well-fitted helmet, water bottle, padded bike shorts, tire pump, spare tubes and (possibly) biking shoes. Be sure to cycle safely, complying with all traffic rules, signs and signals.

If you prefer off-road cycling you will definitely exercise your upper-body muscles along with your legs, and you will typically travel more varied terrain. However, you have a higher risk of spills, so learn the ropes from experienced trail riders before venturing into wooded areas by yourself.

Wherever you ride, avoid cycling when it is dim, dark or raining. Dry, daylight riding is definitely more safe and enjoyable.
