Walmart Stars roll out for event at Hotel Baker expansion complete

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Shoppers will be able to buy even more at the newly expanded Walmart at 801 N. Randall Road in Batavia starting Wednesday, as the store’s long-awaited grocery department opens for business.

“Ever since I’ve been here, people have asked me about when we were going to be a Supercenter,” store manager Mike Morrison said. “They’ve asked for it, and now they’ve got it.”

A grand reopening of the Batavia Walmart is set for 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, starting with a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony. Morrison has been the store’s manger for five years.

The expansion adds about 30,000 square feet and a full grocery department, including fresh produce, prepared foods, a deli, bakery, dry goods and more. The store also is open 24 hours.

“The new Walmart Supercenter will give the city of Batavia an economic shot in the arm by generating tax revenue and creating good-paying jobs,” Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke said in a statement.

“Residents will also benefit by gaining greater access to affordable goods and nutritious groceries.”

The store’s expansion created about 150 jobs, Morrison said. The store employs about 300 full- and part-time associates, he said.

Company officials planned to expand the store since it opened in October 2005. The project began last fall and took 10 months.

SmartStyle Family Hair Salon, part of the expanded Walmart, also will have its grand opening Wednesday. As part of its grand opening, the salon will offer $6.99 haircuts from Wednesday through Sunday, and $9.99 haircuts from Monday through Sept. 27.

The store will hold grand-opening activities from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday that includes face painting, cupcake decorating and food samples.

N. Aurora police seek owners of stolen items KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com NORTH AURORA – Following an arrest earlier this month, the North Aurora Police Department is searching for the owners of several items that are presumed stolen.

On July 12, police arrested two men for burglary and recovered several unclaimed items that they believe were stolen, according to a news release. Officers are asking for the public’s help in locating the rightful owners.

Those items include an orange Homelite brand leaf blower; a yellow Crate brand guitar amplifier; a Crybaby brand foot pedal; a Remington brand 14-inch electric chainsaw; and an Elkhorn brand bow with three orange arrows and three black arrows.

Police recovered the items following the arrests of Jordan T. Murray, 21, of the 1000 block of Reckinger Road, Aurora, and Angel A. Perez, 20, of the 700 block of Graham Road, North Aurora. Both men were charged with one count of burglary in connection with a burglary in the 100 block of Sycamore Lane, North Aurora, the release said.

Police made the arrests about 3 a.m. Aug. 12, when an officer noticed a suspicious blue Chevrolet Malibu that was stopped on Sycamore Lane, just north of

Oak Street. The vehicle was stopped with its dome light on and two males were in the car in front of Highland Park, which was closed, police said.

Following a traffic stop, the officer noticed a tire iron in the front seat, along with a gas chainsaw, an electric chainsaw, a leaf blower, a miter saw, a skateboard and a bow-and-arrow set. Officers later determined that the two men committed a burglary on Sycamore Lane, where they said the two men stole the gas chainsaw, the miter saw and the skateboard, the release said.

Kane County Sheriff’s Office probes death of woman found hanged at jail Terry Hart, 52, was awaiting sentencing

By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Investigators with the Kane County Sheriff’s Office are continuing to look into the death of South Elgin woman found hanged late last week at the county jail.

Sheriff’s police identified the woman as Terry Hart, 52, of the 600 block of Woodland Drive, South Elgin.

The woman had been in custody since July 31 at the Kane County Adult Justice Center near the corner of Route 38 and Peck Road in St. Charles while she was awaiting sentencing for convictions on charges of aggravated battery and resisting arrest.

She was convicted Aug. 13, and a Kane County judge

revoked her bond.

Kane County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lt. Chris Collins said detectives investigating the death have yet to submit reports, so he declined to discuss details concerning the death, such as what was used to hang the woman.

He also declined to indicate whether investigators consider the death to be suicide. However, Collins said the sheriff’s office does not consider the death to be “suspicious.”

At about 1:45 p.m. Friday, Hart was discovered hanged in her cell.

Correctional officers performed CPR, according to the sheriff’s office statement, and Hart was taken by ambulance to Delnor Hospital in Geneva where she was

pronounced dead more than three hours later.

“Our condolences go out to the family,” Kane County Sheriff Pat Perez said. “It’s a terrible thing whenever something like this happens.”

Kane County Coroner Rob Russell said a forensic pathologist hired by his office conducted an autopsy Friday.

He said official reports from the autopsy are not expected for another two weeks. Russell said he will decide how to classify the death at that time.

If ruled a suicide, the death would mark the second suicide at the jail in the past 16 months. In May 2012, inmate Keith Renfroe, 20, of Cottage Grove, Minn., used a shirt to strangle himself, according to the official incident report from the Kane County Sheriff’s Office.

Warrant issued for sex assault suspect

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – A warrant has been issued for a man who police said sexually assaulted a woman in Sugar Grove earlier this month.

The suspect is not yet in custody, said Steven Kurzawa, a detective with the Sugar Grove Police Department.

He said because a warrant has been issued, the name of the suspect is not being released.

He said the warrant is related to an alleged sexual assault that took place Aug. 19 at a town home in the 200 block of Brompton Lane, where several friends gath-

ered and stayed overnight.

Kurzawa said the victim was a 22-year-old woman who was a guest at the party. He said several witnesses saw the assault, which he said happened around 6 a.m.

The suspect then fled in a vehicle shortly after.

“The offender has been identified, and it’s not a stranger to the victim,” he said. “He is at-large and is awaiting to be picked up.”

Kurzawa said the suspect doesn’t have a home address and likely stays a few days at a time with friends.

He said once the suspect is located and charged, police will release his identity.

Rejoice Lutheran Church to launch STOP program GENEVA – Rejoice Lutheran Church in Geneva is launching its Student Tutoring Outreach Program, or STOP, a new tutoring program for students in first through fifth grade for the 2013-2014 school year.

Starting Sept. 25, volunteers will offer free homework assistance and tutoring from 4 to 6 p.m. at the church, 0N377 N. Mill Creek Drive, Geneva. Volunteers will provide tutoring and homework help in reading, writing and math.

No appointments are necessary; students are welcome to drop-in during the set hours whenever they need to. If there is a need, additional days may be added later in the school year.

Minors charged at Campton Hills party

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com CAMPTON HILLS – A 20-year-old has been charged with social hosting after police broke up a party at her Campton Hills home and charged several minors with underage drinking, according to a Campton Hills police report.

Police responded to a party complaint in the 3N500 block of Curling Pond Court in Campton Hills early Aug. 15.

Officers reportedly heard people yelling and talking loudly in the backyard and saw numerous cars parked along both sides of the street.

A 21-year-old man was passed out on the yard, which was strewn with beer cans, police reported.

After officers announced their presence, several teens reportedly ran inside, locked the rear door and turned off the lights. Others ran away from the area and couldn’t be identified, police reported.

An officer reported using a flashlight to see into the kitchen – which was littered with beer cans and red plastic cups – and saw teens drinking.

Resident Jessica L. Stewart, 20, let police inside, police reported, noting about 25 people between the ages of 18 and 21 were there.

“Some had clearly been drinking, while others had not,” an officer said in the report.

Arrangements were made for the sober attendees to drive the intoxicated subjects

home, police reported.

Stewart was charged with social hosting.

Seven minors were charged with underage drinking: Alexandra K. Blair, 18, of the 11N100 block of Flagpole Court, Elgin; Ethan David Byk, 19, of the 500 block of Madison Drive, Buffalo Grove; Collin J. Dunne, 20, of the 39W800 block of Prunetree Lane, St. Charles; Adobe Alina Lockwood, 18, of the 0-100 block of Lilac Court, South Elgin; Patrick J. Smith, 20, of the 2200 block of Brookwood Drive, South Elgin; Justin W. Smith, 19, of the 38W100 block of Henricksen Road, St. Charles; and Michael A. Claney, 21, of the 3N700 block of Hawthorn Drive, St. Charles. Claney was 20 at the time of the incident.

But when Rizzi, 8, of Kaneville, learned of the approaching contest from a friend, the thought of eating as much ice cream as he could, as fast as he could, had a certain appeal.

“I just did it for fun,” Rizzi said. “My friend, Chuck, told me about it about 30 minutes before it started.

“And then I really wanted to play.”

Saturday afternoon, Rizzi walked away with a certificate securing him a free Kitchen Sink ice cream sundae from Colonial Cafe, as one of the winners of the ice cream eating contest, hosted by Colonial, during Kaneville Fest.

The three-day community festival in the small town in southwestern Kane County was scheduled to wrap up Saturday night with a traditional barbecue dinner, concert and fireworks show.

The festival kicked off Thursday with a library book sale and continued Friday

with community garage sales and an outdoor movie at Hill’s Country Store. Kaneville Village President Pat Hill, owner of the store, estimated about 100 people turned out for the screening.

Hill, who served as lead organizer for the festival, said she expected a crowd of about 500 people Saturday night for the dinner and fireworks show.

And in a village with a population of a little less than 500, Hill said, that continues to be a remarkable achievement.

“It’s what we normally see for an event like this,” Hill said.

“It’s just a great, old tradition that we just like to keep going.”

She noted the event draws visitors from several nearby communities, including Elburn, Sugar Grove, Hinckley and Big Rock, and the surrounding countrysides.

Jon Diaz, who lives between Elburn and Kaneville, said his family regularly has visited Kaneville Fest each year for more than a decade – at least to eat dinner and watch fireworks.

“We’re always here for Kaneville Fest,” Diaz said. “It’s a nice time, mainly because it always seems like the town is so into it.”

Vintage rides draw thousands

By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com GENEVA – For some, the vintage cars lining the streets of Geneva’s downtown were novelties, historical artifacts of interest from a time long past.

But for Clark Andrews, many of the cars that drew thousands of people to the blocks surrounding Third Street on Sunday were something more real, devices that stirred his memories from a life mostly lived.

“These are all sort of remembrances of the past – my past – mostly from the 1940s and ’50s,” said Andrews, of Chicago.

“And it’s interesting to resurrect those memories, because they’re mostly good,” he said with a laugh.

Andrews was one among a Sunday crowd believed to number more than 15,000 to pack Geneva’s streets for the annual Concours d’Elegance.

Now in its ninth year, the car show has regularly drawn thousands of spectators to take in the sights of

almost 300 classic cars, including dozens of rare models from different eras.

The free event again drew car enthusiasts and the curious from throughout the Chicago area to Geneva.

Concours organizer Bob Joynt of Batavia said the event in the past has drawn crowds estimated to number about 18,000.

And under warm, sunny skies, Joynt said he believed the crowds might even surpass the show’s best days.

“This is not your typical car show or cruise-in,” Joynt said. “This is something far more special, essentially a display of engineering excellence from throughout the history of the automobile.”

Joynt, for instance, was displaying his 1920 Locomobile.

Within two blocks of where Joynt was showing his car on Third Street were dozens of other cars dating from the so-called Brass Era, including models from Ford, Mercer, Austin, Chevrolet, Packard, Dodge and

Stanley, among others.

The Packards, in particular, were the favorites of twin siblings Olivia and Evan Prendergast, 11, of Wilmette, who came to Geneva with their father, Mike, to celebrate his birthday.

“All the cars are really beautiful,” Evan said.

“Especially the really old ones,” Olivia added.

Their father said Sunday marked their first trip to the Concours d’Elegance show. But he said it likely won’t be their last.

“I think we might become regulars,” Mike Prendergast said.

While Andrews enjoyed the Brass Era cars, he said he was particularly delighted to find a 1951 Jaguar roadster.

“My wife has asked me in quieter moments, if we hit the lottery, and I had a choice of any car, what would I get?”

Andrews said. “And without hesitation, I said it would be an early ’50s Jaguar roadster, just like that one.

“Just beautiful automobiles.”

Zoning appeals chair objects to joining panels

Deli company will donate to Northern Illinois Food Bank

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva’s Zoning Board of Appeals chairman, Art Kaindl, objected to a proposal to combine that board with the Plan Commission and create one panel, the Planning and Zoning Commission.

Kaindl, who has been a member of the ZBA since 1989, asked aldermen Monday not to recommend the plan commission hold a public hearing on whether to combine the two.

The Community Development Department proposed the possibility of a single board that would expedite the city’s development review process.

Kaindl said the ZBA met six to seven times a year. It has not met for 2½ years because of the economic downturn beginning in 2007, but that did not mean its members were out of touch.

“I ask the City Council to look unfavorably on this request,” Kaindl said. “We are talking to Joe Homeowner, and it’s his small problem that needs adjustment.”

Acting as the Committee of the Whole, aldermen voted, 8-2, to allow a public hearing.

First Ward Alderman

Charles Brown and 4th Ward Alderman Dorothy Flanagan voted no.

Director of Community Development Dick Untch said the ZBA’s duties were quasi-judicial, in that its decisions were not appealable to the City Council but in court.

Untch said combining the two would not take that away, as the Plan Commission’s decisions would be recommendations to the City Council and its zoning decisions would be binding, just as they are now.

A review of other municipalities showed they fulfilled both legal obligations with one combined board, Untch said.

Mayor Kevin Burns said the question before aldermen was not to change anything, but to forward the proposal for hearing and have it vetted.

“I realize that is the process,” Kaindl said. “And if it never gets advanced – that is my purpose.”

“The matter is not here for debate, it’s just an idea,” 5th Ward Aldermen Craig Maladra said. “Do you favor it being talked about .... As long as I’ve been on the City Council, we have never been afraid to have a conversation about anything.”

Consumers have until Sept. 13 to buy a pound so the food bank can give a halfpound donation. The goal is 20,000 pounds of meat and cheese, spokesman Steve Riley said.

“We approached the food bank and we approached Jewel because we wanted to do something for the community,” Riley said. “When-

ever we are in a new community, we reach out and do some community-related event to show we care.”

Dietz & Watson is new to area Jewel food stores, though it is sold at other food retailers.

Food bank spokeswoman Donna Larkin Lake said the promotion, with its promise of 20,000 pounds of deli meat and cheese, was coming just in time for its clients.

“We are very excited about it,” Larkin said.

“When kids are going back to school and moms are packing lunches – it’s protein. It’s healthy, fresh meat and cheese that really can help families provide lunches to their kids during the school year. It’s such a great

donation.”

Northern Illinois Food Bank works with 800 food programs in a 13-county area.

DARIEN – On Thursday, Aug. 22, 2013, Thomas F. Atchison passed away peacefully at his home that he shared with his wife, Faith.

Tom was born in Chicago in 1945.

He served in the United States Army, worked as a paramedic, firefighter and ran his own cement finishing business. He served as an officer and detective for the majority of his career, which included the Kane County Sherriff’s Department, the Sugar Grove Police Department and the Hampshire Police Department, where he served as the chief of police until he retired in 2009.

He was a loving brother to his sisters, Margie McCullough, Ruthie Caulkins and Katie Frank; and to his brothers, Al and Robert Atchison.

Tom’s children, Linda (Joe Pitrone), Patty (Jeff Kramp) and Thomas invite all family and friends to attend a simple memorial service Thursday, Aug. 29, at Ralph Seyller Memorial Park in Hampshire. The service will be at 7 p.m. to allow for the release of Chinese lanterns in his honor.

Following retirement, they became world travelers. She was a 65-year member of First Baptist Church of Geneva, a gracious hostess and a treasured, dear friend to many.

Florence is survived by her children, Paul (Cheryln) Cameron of Batavia and Patricia Cameron of Warrenville; her grandson, Nicholas Cameron of Batavia; her sister, Grace Hoekstra of Holland, Mich.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, William, in 2011; an infant son, Bruce William; and siblings, Helen Teggelaar, Deward Piersma, Sidney Piersma, Christopher Piersma, Nicholas Piersma and Raymond Piersma.

Residents will address athletic field proposal

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – A group of residents want Batavia School District 101 Board members to reconsider their approval of a plan for an estimated $13.4 million in improvements to Batavia High School’s athletic fields.

“I don’t like that it is being rushed through and it is something we can’t afford,” Batavia resident Sylvia Keppel said. “There are also problems with artificial turf.”

Keppel and other residents plan to voice their concerns at today’s Batavia School Board meeting.

The meeting will be at 7 p.m. at Rosalie Jones Administration Center, 335 W. Wilson St.

School board members in July approved the improvements, part of a proposed master plan for the fields. Pat Browne, the district’s director of buildings and grounds, has said there is no timetable for the project.

“We don’t think the school board has bad intentions, they just don’t have all the points of view,” Keppel said.

“We want them to reconsider their decision, or at the very least, put it to an advisory referendum.”

The plan was developed after meetings with groups that use the athletic fields, school district administration, maintenance staff and school board members.

Chicago-based architectural, engineering and construction firm Wight &

Company came up with an estimate of $13.4 million for the project.

That amount includes $4.5 million for the high school’s football stadium, including installation of a synthetic turf field and improvements such as bleacher seating for 2,500, a press box, a scoreboard and stadium lighting.

The proposed plan also includes $4.2 million for the installation of a multiuse synthetic turf field and other improvements; $1.5 million for a new maintenance garage/storage facility; $787,000 for the northwest parking area; $715,000 for the varsity baseball field; $616,000 for the junior varsity baseball field; $590,000 for the varsity softball field; and $408,000 for tennis court lighting.

District 304 students get record ACT score KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – Geneva High School’s graduating class of 2013 achieved a record average ACT composite score of 24.6, according to numbers released by ACT. The average composite ACT score for 2013 graduates statewide is 20.6. Nationwide, the composite score is

20.9, officials said.

Superintendent Kent Mutchler praised the students for their hard work in achieving the high scores.

Mutchler also thanked the staff, parents and community for supporting education.

Geneva District 304 showed a 2.3-point increase in composite score in the last decade – from 22.3 in 2004 to 24.6 in 2013.

D-129 has early dismissal today

Project Mobility seeks entries for adaptive bike giveaway If you go

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – After logging onto Facebook on Monday, Tammy Simmons of Project Mobility said she was excited about the reach the nonprofit organization’s latest post has received.

The post – which outlines the rules for an adaptive bike giveaway – had generated more than 6,700 views within 24 hours.

“For us, that’s huge,” said Simmons, pointing out other posts that had less than 200 views.

Project Mobility – a St. Charles-based nonprofit that aims to provide adaptive bikes to disabled children and adults – is using its Facebook page to gather nominations for its bike giveaway during its Sept. 15 fundraiser, Everybody Rides.

Everybody Rides is just that: an event where everybody, disabled and abled alike, can participate, Simmons said. She noted Project Mobility will supply adaptive bikes to those who need them.

Registration is $25 through Friday, after which it increases to $35. Family prices are available. Participants can register for a 10-mile family

Register for Everybody Rides, a fundraiser benefiting Project Mobility, at www.active.com. trail ride or rides of varying lengths on country roads.

The event begins at James O. Breen Community Park at the corner of Campton Hills and Peck roads in St. Charles. Food, drinks, raffles, games and entertainment are planned at the park after the ride.

An adaptive bike valued at more than $3,000 will be given away at the event.

Project Mobility is asking people to submit their stories about how this bike would change their life or the life of someone they know. Whoever gets the most Facebook “likes” will win the bike.

“It’s a fun way to get people engaged in it,” said Simmons, adding that a lot of people don’t realize what the families go through and how much more expensive everything is for them.

Hultgren campaign fined for misstating financials

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com The congressional campaign of U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Winfield, will have to pay a $2,500 penalty to the Federal Election Commission after an audit showed a misstatement of receipts and expenditures for 2009 and 2010.

According to the FEC’s audit, Randy Hultgren for Congress’ financial reports showed understated receipts by $9,440 and spending by $7,911 for 2009.

In 2010, Hultgren’s campaign understated receipts by $83,278 and spending by $58,694 and the ending cashon-hand by $26,113.

Hultgren won the state’s contested 14th Congressional District. First, he gained his party’s nod in the primary election against Ethan Hastert – son of Dennis Hastert who held the seat for 20 years – then against incumbent Democrat Bill Foster and Green Party candidate Dan Kairis.

Hultgren was elected to a second term in 2012.

In the negotiated settlement agreement, dated Aug. 19 and made public by the FEC, the Hultgren campaign’s political committee amended its financial reports to correct the misstatements.

In a statement, Hultgren for Congress thanked the FEC staff for its assistance and professionalism during the audit and review of the campaign’s reports.

“We cooperated fully with the FEC during this review and adopted their suggestions about how to strengthen the campaign’s compliance operations,” according to the statement.

“This matter focused on technical reporting issues which is why it was handled by the FEC’s alternative dispute resolution office and not in an enforcement action,” the statement said.

“We are glad this matter is now closed and look forward to working with the FEC in the future to ensure compliance with its reporting requirements.”

This is the second time the FEC took corrective action on the Hultgren campaign. In September 2010, the campaign admitted it improperly accepted campaign donations from a state campaign committee that was organized years earlier.

Federal election law forbids candidates from transferring funds from state and local campaign committees to fund runs for congressional seats or other federal offices.

When the improper contributions were brought to the campaign’s attention, the money was refunded, according to a campaign spokesman.

Pool attendance: Hot and cold Numbers went up and down this summer based on temperatures

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com St. Charles Park District’s Otter Cove Aquatic Park was packed with people this past weekend trying to cool off as sweltering temperatures returned to the area.

“It looked more like something we would see in early July,” said Kristi Brewer, aquatics and youth programs supervisor for the St. Charles Park District.

However, before the current surge of heat, the area saw plenty of cool and wet days this season, which in turn hurt attendance at pools in central Kane County. There were several occasions this summer that the St. Charles Park District had to close portions of Otter Cove and Swanson Pool.

Swanson Pool closed for the season Aug. 20, but Otter Cove will remain open until Monday.

The region experienced several days of temperatures in the 60s or 70s in June and July. Accuweather recorded only one 90-degree temperature in June.

“We did try to keep the facilities open as much as possible, but we have to be responsive with staffing,” Brewer said.

It was a different story last summer, where the mercury hit 100 degrees or higher on four occasions and the temperature was at least 90 degrees for seven consecutive days, according to the National Weather Service.

“Last summer, every day we were extremely busy,” Brewer said.

The cool weather took a big bite out of daily attendance at Batavia Park District’s Harold Hall Quarry Beach in Batavia, which occupies a former stone quarry and features a sand-bottom swimming area.

Amber Smith, facilities manager in charge of Hall Quarry Beach, estimated that daily attendance was down about 30 percent, although she said the facility did sell as many season passes this

“It was not a good summer for us,” Smith said. “I really wish the weather would have been better for us. It was not a good summer for an outdoor pool.”

The cool summer days affected how warm Quarry Beach got.

“We had a lot of days when the water was 65 or 66 degrees,” Smith said. “That’s a little brisk.”

However, a new liner the park district installed last

year to provide warmer water has helped, Smith said. Before the liner was installed, water as cold as 55 degrees was being pumped in by a well.

The liner helped the temperature of the water reach 80 degrees last season.

But this week’s hot weather will not help Quarry Beach’s season.

The facility closed Aug. 18, right before Batavia students went back to school.

“It’s a staffing issue,” Smith said. “Our lifeguards

are in high school or college, and a lot of them are in sports.

Because Quarry Beach has a sandy bottom and not a clear bottom, we need a minimum of 8 to 10 lifeguards at the facility.”

Geneva Park District’s Sunset Pool closed four full days this summer because of low temperatures and severe weather when compared to three days last year, said Traci Wicks, the park district’s director of marketing and public relations. Sunset Pool

will close for the season Monday.

However, Wicks said the cooler days didn’t have a big impact on attendance. Sunset Pool’s attendance on a normal 80 degree-plus day can range from 700 to 1,300 people, she said.

“That remained consistent this year; we just had less days with temperatures higher than 80 degrees,” Wicks said. “If the sun is out and it’s 80 degrees, it’s still a great day for swimming.”

OPINIONS LETTERS TO THE EDITOR It’s about time To the Editor: Letters concerning the Zimmerman/Martin case, such as the one appearing in the Aug. 15 edition of the Kane County Chronicle (“World has been watching”), frighten me.

The writer criticizes the jury for following the letter of the law in reaching its decision. That’s what a jury is supposed to do.

Also, where did the writer obtain the statistics that “dozens of Floridians” have been shot because of the “stand your ground” rule? And how does the writer explain the multiple shootings in Chicago, which has no stand your ground rule – at least not by that name?

At least one witness in the case stated that Trayvon Martin was on top of George Zimmerman. If I were in Zimmerman’s place, I would have responded in the same manner to protect myself.

The writer also said, “There’s always a bad outcome when someone has a gun and the other person is defenseless.” In this case, George Zimmerman was not defenseless and was able to protect himself. It’s about time that Illinois passed concealed carry so that the innocent will be able to protect themselves from an assault.

America’s kids need better education law

By ARNE DUNCAN Special to The Washington Post The nation’s most sweeping education law – the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965, better known as No Child Left Behind – is outmoded and broken.

At the heart of No Child Left Behind is a promise – to set a high bar for all students and to protect the most vulnerable. Success in that effort will be measured in the opportunities for our nation’s children, in a time when a solid education is the surest path to a middle-class life. Tight global economic competition means that jobs will go where the skills are. Raising student performance could not be more urgent.

No Child Left Behind has

given the country transparency about the progress of at-risk students. But its inflexible accountability provisions have become an obstacle to progress and have focused schools too much on a single test score. NCLB is six years overdue for an update, and nearly all agree that it should be replaced with a law that gives systems and educators greater freedom while continuing to fulfill that earlier promise.

The vision of American education that President Barack Obama and I share starts in the classroom – with fully engaged students, creative and inspiring teachers, and the support and resources needed to get every child prepared for college and career. Students in our poorest communi-

ties should enjoy learning opportunities like those in our wealthiest communities.

Washington’s role is to protect children at risk and promote opportunity for all.

The federal government is not, and will never be, in the business of telling states or schools what or how to teach.

But it cannot shirk its role of ensuring that schools and students meet the high bar that prepares them for the real world. History shows that, without some kind of accountability, states and districts do not always meet the needs of the most vulnerable students.

Yet the backers of a bill passed by the House last month would use this moment to weaken that role and reverse reforms that carry enormous benefits for children.

Others would retreat from ongoing efforts to strengthen and elevate the teaching profession. Neither would be a smart move.

Let’s not kid ourselves that things are fine. The United States once led the world in the proportion of its young people who had completed college; today, we are 12th. Three-quarters of our young people are deemed unfit for military service, in part, because of gaps in their education. This is no time to sit back.

States must play the central role in leading the education agenda – and their work in partnership with the Education Department provides a road map toward a better law.

Yet some in Congress would reduce the federal

government to a passive check-writer, asking nothing in return for taxpayers’ funds.

And they would lock in major cuts to education funding at a time when continued investment in education is the only way we can remain globally competitive. Far better ideas, which build on state and local reform efforts, can be found in the bill passed in June by the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions committee.

In the months ahead, I will ask Congress to listen to those doing the real work of education change.

We are fighting not just for a strong education system but also for our country. A good law is part of that fight.

kdruley@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Shea Thayer’s Batavia girls volleyball teammates heap high praise upon her, which delights Thayer all the more considering how recent back troubles might have affected her vertical.

A stress fracture in her back sidelined Thayer for most of her sophomore club season, and she was unable to return to full action until the first day of 2012 tryouts.

Thayer started at middle hitter throughout the fall and remained healthy during her most recent Sports Performance club season. Her stamina gradually returned, but Thayer made sure to take out an insurance policy to support the Bulldogs’ bid for a solid season this fall.

“I feel so much stronger. I’ve been working out every day. I’ve definitely gained a lot of strength and muscle,” Thayer said.

“Definitely gotten bigger.”

Now a senior, Thayer admits another inch or two to bolster her 5-foot-10 frame wouldn’t hurt, especially as the Bulldogs size up an Upstate Eight Conference River Division that includes its share of height at the net.

Short of some miracle overnight spurt, however, Thayer happily brings strong leaping ability she’s always felt confidently about.

“We really, even this year, just connected so much, more than ever.”

Outside hitter Heather Meyer – like Faulhaber and Thayer a third-year varsity player – sees the benefits of Thayer’s “ups” elsewhere, too.

“Her block is huge,” Meyer said, “so that’s definitely going to help us this year.”

Shackled by a back brace for only about a month after learning of her condition in the winter of 2012, Thayer eagerly attacked her physical therapy.

She continued her recomittment to strength training and enters her final high school season rejuvenated.

“It was tough sometimes.

I was out of shape, so it was tough coming back, but, I mean, I feel good now,” Thayer said. “I feel like I’m definitely back to where I was and I’m getting better.”

“Her block is huge, so that’s deinitely going to help us this year.”

Geneva, St. Charles North and Larkin are receiving most of the preseason buzz, but a nonconference schedule that includes defending state champions Benet (4A) and St. Francis (3A) only figures to help the Bulldogs’ growth before league play opens Sept. 17.

Thayer credits Trippi-Payne’s cheerful personality for helping her stay focused.

“She’s really positive all the time, so she doesn’t let us be negative, so it’s easier to have a positive outlook on stuff,” Thayer said.

Injuries or not, optimism always adds up in this seesaw sport. Now that she’s replenished her own supply, Thayer is jumping for joy.

APPLETON, Wis. – The Kane County Cougars scored the first two runs, but couldn’t hold off Wisconsin, which went on to win, 4-2, Monday at Fox Cities Stadium.

The Cougars scored their two runs in the top of the second, but the Timber Rattlers rallied for two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. They added a run in the fifth and eighth innings.

Wisconsin won its second straight after falling to the Cougars on Saturday.

Willson Contreras, Marco Hernandez and Oliver Zapata led the Cougars hitting by going 7 for 12 at the Nos. 5 through 7 positions. Contreras

led Kane County with a 3 for 4 effort at the plate and scored a run. Hernandez went 2 for 4 with a run while Zapata finished 2 for 4.

The Cougars’ Jason Pugliese (0-1) pitched six innings, allowing six hits and three runs (all earned) while striking out four. He didn’t walk a Wisconsin batter.

Andrew McKirahan pitched the seventh inning and Brian Smith closed out the game for the Cougars by pitching in the eighth.

The Cougars (22-40, 53-74) were eliminated from postseason picture Sunday after falling 3-1 to Wisconsin. There are seven games left in the season.

Name game not over yet for Shoulders Traditionally tame National Public Radio recently let its hair down – relatively speaking – during a segment with Cougars first baseman/ designated hitter Rock Shoulders.

Appearing on NPR’s “How To Do Everything” podcast, Shoulders spoke for about four minutes about the novelty of his name, which we chronicled shortly after the season opened in April.

Born Roderick Shoulders on Sept. 26, 1991, Shoulders has gone by his nickname since age 4, when a friend’s mom struggled with pronouncing “Roderick.”

Listeners submitted questions to hosts Mike Danforth and Ian Chillag, who asked them on their behalf. The most poignant of the bunch dealt with whether Shoulders ever was bullied for his name.

“Not really picked on, but I will say some people tried to give me their own nicknames.

Calling me ‘Pebble’ and stuff like that, and ‘Boulder’ and all kinds of stuff,” Shoulders said on the podcast. “But I didn’t take it as picked on. I just took it as jealousy. That everybody wanted my name and they just were tying to make fun of me because they wanted to have my name instead of their own name.”

Shoulders, a 25th round pick of the parent Cubs in 2011, won Minor League Baseball’s online “Moniker Madness” fan voting tournament last season. He thrust himself onto the baseball landscape even further early this season, when he was named the Cubs’ organizational player of the month for April after batting .370 with five home runs and 16 RBIs in 22 games.

Cue fans’ quips and imaginations, which produced a series of listener questions about Shoulders’ fortunes in “Rock, Paper, Scissors.”

“Oh, not at all,” Shoulders said. “Because if you throw a rock hard enough at a piece of paper, it rips all the time.”

Furs – and birds – of a feather: Geneva product Pat Schiller and Martel Moore share more than just Northern Illinois ties as they vie for spots on the Atlanta Falcons’ 53-man roster.

Both former Huskies also are undrafted free agents.

Schiller, a linebacker, signed in 2012 and eventually landed on the practice squad. Moore, NIU’s leading receiver during its Orange Bowl run last season, joined the Falcons

in April, paving the way to a reunion with Schiller.

“I was able to be around Martel for a long time, so I know him pretty well, and am trying to take him under my wing as much as possible here, you know,” Schiller said. “Any way I can to try to help him out and show him the ropes, I guess you could say.”

Schiller has recorded seven tackles during the preseason. The Falcons host Jacksonville in their exhibition finale Thursday night.

In other Schiller news, he recently switched jersey numbers from 50 to 90 when teammate Osi Umenyiora – a former Super Bowl champion defensive end with the New York Giants – requested 50.

Reports from Atlanta indicate Schiller was compensated with dinner. He initially joked the meal was at Golden Corral, but Umenyiora assured the restaurant

Rich reward: Beginning this season, the Northern Illinois women’s golf program will honor one player who best exemplifies the character of the matriarch of its home course.

The Betty Ann Rich Award is named for the late wife of Jerry Rich, the owner and architect of Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, the home of NIU men’s and women’s golf.

The winner will be named at the end of each season.

The Riches both attended NIU and met at the Neptune Hall dormitory.

Rich Harvest Farms will host one of six NCAA Division I men’s regionals in May.

Thielk seeks more comfortable opener Central rolls in opener

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com Last year’s season-opening, 42-41 Batavia football win at Glenbard North was a memorable one for the Bulldogs, especially considering the Panthers advanced to the 8A state championship game.

But for Bulldogs standout Anthony Thielk, then a junior, the reality is it wasn’t a very fun night.

“It was the most severe cramping I’ve ever had,” Thielk said. “I’d only cramped one time before that night, and when I started cramping, it started with one calf but it worked all the way up my body, my calf, hamstring, quads. It even got into my hands, so that’s when I knew I was really in trouble.”

With a mild first few weeks of preseason practice giving way to hot weather projected all week – including for opening night Friday, when Glenbard North visits Bulldog Stadium – cramping could certainly put a crimp in some players’ opening night plans.

Thielk, a linebacker/running back, doesn’t think that will hold true for him this year.

“I feel like I’m in 10 times better shape for the first week than last year, so I’m not expecting that to happen again,” Thielk said.

Thielk wasn’t the only player to cramp up during the Glenbard North game, but losing him for most of the second half was a substanAnthony Thielk tial setback for the Bulldogs.

Thielk noted that a lingering hamstring injury cost him his track season leading up to junior year, a major conditioning setback.

He said going through track workouts last spring has him in much better shape for his senior year.

Still, that forecast for the week – Weather.com projected a high of 94 today and 91 for Friday – was certain to cause some groaning for area teams. Gulping, too.

“All you can do at that point is hydrate,” Thielk said. “All of the guys, we all care about each other so much and care about the team so much. The amount we care about the team is unbelievable. That pretty much is all we talk about is football, and a lot of what we talk about [this week] is hydrating. We can’t have cramping this year. We can’t afford it.”

Gone but not forgotten: Class of 2013 Batavia graduate Zach Strittmatter, a standout receiver for the Bulldogs, is among 33 finalists for the National Football Foundation High School National Scholar-Athete Award, which honors one athlete from each of five regions as “the best and the brightest for their accomplishments as athletes, scholars and citizens at the high school level,” according to a news release.

Strittmatter is now a freshman in the football program at Washington (Mo.) University.

One of the other finalists is a roommate of Strittmatter’s at Washington, defensive back Dylan Newcomb.

BATAVIA – Similar to the Kane County Cougars being a stepping stone to the major leagues, Sunday’s Peapod Half Marathon prepared competitors for the ultimate in running – a full marathon.

Many runners in the 13.1 mile race, won by Lars Juhl of Chicago, used the race to get ready for marathons held in October, said race director Danny Delgado.

“This race has built a reputation as a great warm up for the Chicago and Milwaukee marathons,” Delgado said. “We have runners from 10 different states and all over the Chicagoland area.”

Runners took a slightly different course than in the past few years to avoid blocking Main Street.

“The course got faster,” said Delgado. “We eliminated the hill up Houston [Street] and the last two-and-a-half miles are all downhill” Surprisingly, results were higher.

Juhl, who took third in 2010, crossed the finish line in 1 hour, 14 minutes and .06 of a second, four-and-a-half minutes off last year’s top time of 1:09:36.

Chuck Amenta of Geneva said the race was a great tuneup for a marathon.

“A bunch of my triathlon friends use this race as a long training run for the marathons,” said Amenta as he cheered his friends on from Church Street.

This year’s half marathon is the fifth time Peapod, an online grocery delivery service headquartered in Skokie, sponsored the event.

“Peapod is a local company so we wanted to be part of the community,” said Peapod spokesman Brad Porter. “This a good venue to become part of the community so that is why have sponsored it.”

BY TERRY KOVEL KOVELS.COM A Minton majolica centerpiece was auctioned in May 2013 as an “ice stand.” Minton & Polson was established in 1793 in Stoke-onTrent, Staffordshire, England.

The company started making majolica in about 1850. Some of these early pieces, marked “Minton,” inspired majolica made after 1873, when the company often used the mark “Mintons.”

Ice stands were pictured in the company’s 1851 catalog. They were tall pieces meant to be used as spectacular centerpieces on a dining table. Each was a tall pedestal with a vase or dishshaped piece at the top, a large “stem” and a group of small bowls or plates surrounding the pedestal, sometimes at two levels. The stands held ice or ice shavings and sauces for dessert.

But as one expert has said, they were “more ornamental than functional.” An 1865 Minton ice stand decorated with stag heads, wolves and pine cones sold for $8,610 at a May 2013 Neal auction in New Orleans. *** Q: For years my family has owned an antique spool bed (the kind with spool-turned head and foot boards). Everyone always called it a “Jenny Lind bed.”

Please tell me why.

A: Jenny Lind (1820-1887) was a world-famous opera singer known as the “Swedish Nightingale.” She became a huge celebrity in the United States when she toured here in 1850-’52 at the invitation of P.T. Barnum, a master promoter.

American advertisers used her to promote everything from hats and gloves to pianos and beds.

Lind is said to have slept in a

spool-turned bed while on the tour - so furniture makers started calling the popular style a “Jenny Lind bed.” The style still is often advertised that way. *** Q: I have inherited a picture of what looks like an oil painting.

There are two buildings in it, one with a “Morton Salt” sign. The picture is signed “H. Hargrove” and has a round seal on the back with a number and the phrase, “Collectors Corner, Inc., Certificate of Authenticity.” Is it worth much?

A: “H. Hargrove” is a name used by painter Nicolo Sturiano.

He was born in Italy in 1941 and came to the United States in 1964. He worked as a winemaker at a New York State vineyard while he began painting as a hobby. When his nostalgic American landscapes became popular, he left the vineyard and moved to Greenwich Village in New York City. By ANN HORNADAY The Washington Post The summer of 2013 might be remembered best as the Season of the Collapsing Tentpoles. As mega-budget spectacles such as “White House Down,” “The Lone Ranger” and “After Earth” fell apart at the box office, little engines that could – one with a name that was literally “Mud” – proved they could not only survive the competition, but thrive.

As we learned last summer, which featured such debacles as “John Carter” and “Battleship,” quality still counts.

Studios, which generally avoid movies that are novel or risky or not based on a comic book because they’re “execution dependent,” may slowly be realizing that everything’s execution dependent, no matter the star, source material or special-effects budget.

That goes for enduringly reliable family films as well — in the pile-up of animated kids’ movies this summer, the triumphs happened also to be the best: “Despicable Me 2” and “Monsters University.” Those victories, plus a few out-of-left-field hits and misses, made the past few months particularly instructive for anyone willing to pay attention. As we all go back to school, here are a few lessons learned that Hollywood may want to study up on when it plans our next summer vacation.

1. Even the biggest stars burn out: Two of the biggest stars on the planet – Will Smith and Johnny Depp – got rude awakenings this summer, when their movies flopped. “The Lone Ranger” proved that a dusty period Western based on a 1930s radio serial – surprise! – won’t connect with young audiences or international viewers, regardless of explosions, spectacular stunts and the magical Mr. Depp.

“After Earth” has done better overseas, but probably not well enough to turn a genuine profit.

2. It’s not just about U.S.: Even if non-U.S. box-office receipts can’t save a debacle like “After Earth,” they have tipped the scales in favor of “Pacific Rim,” especially in China. Guillermo del Toro’s science fiction fantasy underperformed when it opened domestically but has more than made up for that in other markets, largely due to del Toro’s instinctively global

3. Women aren’t the enemy, Hollywood: One of the biggest surprise hits of the summer was “The Heat,” the only big-popcorn movie to feature a female lead (two in fact: Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy). And another dark horse can attribute its success to women.

Brad Pitt’s zombie chase-movie “World War Z” went from disasterpiece to Brad’s highest-grossing film, thanks to the women who made up a whopping 50 percent of its audience.

4. Black films don’t “overperform.” They perform, period: With successes like “Fruitvale Station” and “Lee Daniels’ The Butler,” this was a great summer for African-American stories on screen.

And they became hits, not just because they were good, but because they were made for modest budgets and marketed with savvy and sensitivity. Like the Tyler Perry oeuvre, rom-coms like “Jumping and Broom” and “Think Like a Man” and “42” before them, this summer’s crop of films by and about African-Americans connected with just the right audiences — whether that meant the Weinstein Company reaching out to black churches to promote “The Butler” or Codeblack Entertainment, which produced “Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain,”

researching Hart’s ticket sales and Twitter and Facebook followings. The result? “Let Me Explain” was one of the sleeper hits of the summer, grossing just over $32 million (which, coincidentally, is also the gross from ticket sales from Hart’s last tour).

5. And let serious dramas save the day: One of the most profitable movies of the summer was “Mud,” an atmospheric bayou thriller starring Matthew McConaughey in the title role; after opening in theaters in April, it played all summer long, still attracting audiences even when it was available on DVD. Similar successes include “The Place Beyond the Pines,” the mid-life romance “Before Midnight,” Woody Allen’s “Blue Jasmine,” the comingof-age comedy “The Way, Way Back” and the emotionally gripping urban drama “Fruitvale Station.” All of these winners prove that “the audience is really craving classic filmmaking,” says Howard Cohen, co-president of Roadside Attractions, “Mud’s” distributor. “‘Mud’ had Matthew McConaughey; it had some ambition; it had some scope; it was accessible for the whole country; it was not culturally exclusive. But most [important], it was a movie for grown-ups, the kind that’s not getting made anymore outside movies engineered for Oscars.”

Guard against tick bites by following these tips Dear Doctor K: I live in a heavily wooded area, so I’d like to know the best way to remove a tick if you spot one on your skin.

Dear Reader: Knowing how to remove a tick is a useful skill for anyone who spends time outdoors, or who cares for someone who does. The sooner a tick is removed – correctly – the less likely the critter can deliver bacteria that cause Lyme disease or other tick-borne diseases.

Very young deer ticks feed on mice and other small mammals.

Those animals have the bacteria that cause Lyme disease in their blood. Once the tick feeds, the bacteria enter the ticks.

The next late spring or summer these ticks are “older children.” This is typically the time that they will get on our skin and start to feed. Because they’re so small, it’s easy not to notice them. They are brown and about the size of a poppy seed. If they have two days to feed on our skin, they will transmit the Lyme disease bacteria to us. (Occasionally, adult female deer ticks feed on us, but they are much bigger and harder to miss.)

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff successfully on us. They have a two-pronged mouthpart that sticks to our skin because each part has tiny backward-pointing barbs. Just to be sure that their mouthparts stick to our skin, their saliva forms a sticky glue.

It’s a fiendishly clever anatomy.

We also have been clever, however. We invented tweezers. To remove a tick, use a pair of finetipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to your skin as possible.

Then pull it upward, slowly and steadily. (I’ve put an illustration of how to remove a tick on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

If the mouthpart remains in the skin, try to remove it. If you can’t, check with your doctor.

Try not to crush or squeeze an attached tick.

Once the tick has been removed, clean your skin and wash your hands with soap and warm water. Dispose of the tick by placing it in alcohol or flushing it down the toilet.

The first sign of Lyme disease is often a rash that looks like a red bull’s-eye. Keep an eye out for this rash at the site of your tick bite for about one month after you’ve been bitten. If you notice a rash, contact your doctor right away. Antibiotics can usually cure the illness.

Follow these tips to prevent tick bites in the first place: • Avoid woods, high brush and grasses, where ticks hide.

• Wear light-colored clothing, which makes ticks easier to spot.

• Tuck your pants inside your socks to create a physical barrier.

• Use insect repellent, especially those containing DEET or permethrin.

• Stay in the sun. Ticks don’t like dry, open areas.

• Thoroughly inspect yourself, your children and your pets, especially the legs and groin, after you’ve been out in the woods.

Dr. Wallace: I’m 20, married and the mother of a 4-month-old, very handsome, baby boy. We are a very happy family.

Before I met my husband, I was dating Carl, and we had been seeing each other for more than a year. He is a nice guy, and he also became good friends with my parents, especially my mother.

When I broke up with Carl, my mother was really upset because his father is a doctor, and she really thought that Carl and I would get married.

My mother was wrong. Ryan and I have been married for nearly two years, and he’s a terrific husband and father.

Dear Abby: I am a 65-year-old active woman who still works.

I play tennis several times a week and have a loving relationship with my kids. I know with certainty that I have many good things in my life. However, since my sister died last year, I have been having second thoughts about a lot of the decisions I have made over the years – especially regarding relationships and my choice of jobs.

In “The Devil’s Dictionary,” Ambrose Bierce defined “prescription” as a physician’s guess at what will best prolong the situation with least harm to the patient.

At the bridge table, the prescription for success is trying not to have to guess what to do, but what will have mathematically the best chance to succeed.

In this deal, South is in four spades. West leads the club queen. Since East is marked with the club ace, declarer plays low from the board at tricks one and two, but still loses the first three tricks. East then shifts to the spade six. After drawing trumps, how should declarer continue?

South opened three spades, showing a respectable suit, some 6-10 high-card points and about seven winners. Here, North would have done well to respond three no-trump, but if South’s suit needed establishing, that contract could have gone down several tricks. Raising to four spades was “normal.”

South has only nine winners: seven spades, one heart and one diamond. At first glance, it looks as though he needs one of the redsuit finesses to work. But which one should he take? It seems to be a pure guess. However, he can improve his odds slightly.

Declarer should play a diamond to dummy’s ace, ruff a low diamond in his hand, return to dummy with a trump, and ruff another diamond. Here, the king drops, establishing dummy’s queen and allowing South to claim. But if the diamond king is still out there somewhere, declarer cashes the rest of his trumps, planning to take the heart finesse at trick 12.
