After weeks of waiting, baby birds arrive EDITOR’S NOTEBOOK Kathy Gresey Much anticipation has filled my life this month.

It all started – if I remember correctly – Aug. 1. My boyfriend and I were outside, preparing to have a barbecue, when a bird flew out of the flower basket I had hung on a hook at the town home where I live.

I went over to inspect the flowers, checking to see whether they needed watering, and – wow! – there was an egg in the basket.

Thus began daily viewings of the flower basket/nest from the inside of my town home.

Turns out, a pair of what I believe to be mourning doves had laid not one, but two eggs among the flowers I had so dutifully cared for all summer.

Grabbing my cheap pair of binoculars, I began checking out the nest multiple times each day. Sometimes there would be one bird sitting on

The birds, of course, always seemed very aware and watchful. Never was there a time that I did not see one of the two birds on the eggs.

Which led to a problem.

Around the middle of the month, a gathering of people was scheduled to come over to the place for a barbecue. I was worried any action on the balcony near the flower basket would disturb the birds, forc-

ing them to leave their eggs.

(At this point, I really had come to care for the little bird family!)

I consulted the only nature columnist I know – the great Pam Otto – and asked her what she thought of the situation.

She told me that since the birds already were so invested in their eggs, that a minor disturbance probably wouldn’t cause them to flee.

So, the grill was moved

the furthest it could be from the nest, and – sure enough – those birds stayed put.

Day after day after day passed. And earlier this week came the best binocular sighting of them all – the baby birds had hatched!

It’s been great to watch them feed, kind of awkward and gross, but still really cool.

And then came a rare moment Thursday evening. No adult bird was with the babies.

Which led to an opportunity.

I rushed out on the balcony and took a photo of the chicks up close, and then I scurried back inside.

The photo I took is the one you see with this column.

I’m looking forward to seeing these two little guys get some flight lessons and grow up.

Just another example of the great wildlife we have here in Kane County.

Police volunteer to raise money for Special Olympics editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – Officers with the Geneva Police Department will take on a new role this weekend, strapping on aprons to serve burgers and sandwiches to raise money for Special Olympics Illinois.

Police officers will volunteer their time serving meals from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Tom and Eddie’s, 1042 Commons Drive at the Geneva Commons mall during this Burgers and Badges event.

Officers will accept contributions for the Special Olympics, and the restaurant will donate 10 percent of its sales from noon to 8 p.m. to the organization.

Police will have giveaways to hand out to children, and adults can buy raffle tickets to win a Harley-Davidson motorcycle, which will be on display at the restaurant.

Eye on the

Affordable Affordable Care Care Act Act

Health benefits to stay under ACA

But Boyce, owner of Boyce Body Works in Batavia, said she doesn’t yet know what that will mean for her business or for the 30 or so people who work there.

“I’ve been reading and studying and learning as much as I can about what’s going on,” Boyce said. “But to be honest, I still don’t know what I should expect next year.”

More than three years ago, Congress passed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, a sweeping health care reform law promoted by President Barack Obama that since has come to be known as “Obamacare.”

The law will produce many changes to the way Americans participate in the health care system, as the law moves to change the health care system itself.

But few changes may be felt as keenly as the way in which businesses continue providing health insurance as a workplace benefit.

For decades, health insurance coverage in America typically has come from employers who provide it as part of an overall compensation package.

That historically left millions of Americans without health insurance, because they didn’t purchase individual policies, their employers didn’t provide coverage or they thought it was too expensive.

In 2011, 54.7 percent of American workers were covered under health plans through their employers, according to a report issued in July by the Employment Benefit Research Institute. The report noted just 22.4 percent of uninsured workers said they hadn’t been offered health benefits from their employers.

Proponents of the ACA have said it will help reduce the ranks of the uninsured. In October, public health insurance marketplaces, or exchanges, will open and individuals can purchase health insurance – regardless if their employers offer health insurance. By 2014, the ACA will require all Americans to hold “minimum essential coverage.”

The ACA had scheduled a so-called “employer mandate” to take effect in 2014, which

would have required all businesses with more than 50 fulltime equivalent workers to offer health insurance to its employees or pay a penalty.

That has been pushed back to 2015.

However, those whose business it is to advise businesses on the ACA say they are advising that extra year is not a time to relax.

“The first thing I advise any business owner is: Don’t stick your head in the sand,” said Elizabeth Milito, senior executive counsel for the National Federation of Independent Business.

She noted the rollout of the

ACA appears to be fluid, with rules still being written and provisions being delayed.

But she advised employers be aware of what’s coming.

She noted some employers have called her with questions from employees based on a belief that the employers must provide all employees with free or low-cost health insurance.

“It’s kind of a whisperdown-the-line effect,” Milito said. “So when it gets down to the employees, they’ve gotten bad information, and then they bring their questions to the people they go to with any sort of benefits question.”

She said employers should educate themselves on the intricacies of the employer mandate, particularly as it relates to determining how many employees they have. She noted the rules for counting employees under the ACA are not the same as those they might encounter in other federal or state labor laws.

“If your CPA or lawyer doesn’t know much about ACA, then find one that does,” Milito said.

She has heard from some business owners who have reduced their full-time headcount by shifting more workers to part time or redesignating them as “independent contractors.”

But Milito said the NFIB cautions employers against such tactics.

“Beware of workarounds,” she said. “They can be problematic. It’s not going to get you out of the requirements under the ACA, and it may get you into hot water with other government agencies.”

Mike Deagle, an insurance broker through his company Deagle Benefit Group Inc., of Batavia, and president of the Illinois State Association of Health Underwriters, said there are other impacts of the law of which employers should be aware.

He noted that the law will greatly reduce the number of health plans offered by insurers. And the law has mandated changes to how rates are

Previously, rates could be determined by a number of factors, including medical history, gender, lifestyle and occupation, among others.

In 2014, Deagle said, insurance premiums will only be rated based on the age of the insured, family composition, the geographic region in which they live, and, for individual policies, whether the insured smokes.

He said that will result in otherwise healthy individuals of different ages being charged different rates for health insurance, even under the same plan.

Deagle said the changes will undoubtedly result in changes in how much employers must pay to insure their workers.

This year, the Kaiser Foundation found health insurance premiums increased by about 4 percent from 2012. But how much they will increase next year remains to be seen, as insurers keep that information close to the vest, Deagle said.

And that means it’s difficult to predict how the businesses will respond, he said, noting that some may decide to send employees into the

health insurance exchanges or simply provide stipends.

Employers will be required to provide workers with a notice regarding the opening of the exchanges by Oct. 1, Milito said.

Boyce said she is waiting to hear from her company’s insurance providers before she makes any decisions, as much of her calculus will be driven by changes to the cost and terms of the policies she will be offered for next year.

“We’ve seen our costs go up and up for years now, sometimes by 20 percent or more,” Boyce said. “Those are costs we can’t continue to just absorb, so, if it happens again, we’ll have to see what our options are.”

However, Boyce said one of her choices is not to drop health insurance altogether even though she is not subject to the employer mandate.

Deagle and Milito also said they believed most employers who now offer health insurance would continue to do so, as it is used as a worker recruitment and retention tool.

That view was backed by a recent survey by workplace issues consulting firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas found that 82 percent of companies will continue to offer health care coverage next year.

High school meets standard, but some fall short

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – Kaneland High School met Adequate Yearly Progress standards for the first time since 2008, but the overall news on AYP was mixed in District 302.

John Stewart Elementary, for instance, met the standards after missing last year, but because the Elburn school receives Title 1 funding, it still must offer a choice for students to attend another school in the district that has met the standards.

Once a school is in a status in which it offers choice, it must meet standards for two consecutive years before it is out of that status.

But since both Blackberry Creek and McDole elementary schools did not meet the standards this year, the district must offer choice for Stewart families to its only elementary school that did – John Shields Elementary in Sugar Grove. McDole and Shields will not have to offer a choice, since they met stan-

dards last year and are not in such a status.

Also, Harter Middle School is in its second year of academic warning.

Adequate Yearly Progress sets goals that require schools to reach performance targets in reading and math, not only in their entire population but also in subgroups.

A subgroup is considered if there are at least 45 students meeting the description. For instance, some subgroups at some district schools are “economically disadvantaged,” “students with disabilities” and “Hispanic” students.

District 302 Superinten-

dent Jeff Schuler said he is pleased that Kaneland High School and John Stewart met the standards. He said the schools had worked to improve. In particular, the high school shifted to an eight-period day and added new intervention services.

“I absolutely feel good about the fact that two buildings that certainly needed to improve set in place a plan to improve” and met the standards, Schuler said.

But Schuler said the standards in place for the school year that has just begun, 2013-14, will feature a standard that will be “impossible” to meet – 100 percent.

“I would say it’s an impossible task,” Schuler said.

“It’s a standard that is not going to be met.”

Those that will meet standards likely will do so under the safe harbor provision, Schuler said. In that provision, schools can make AYP if a subgroup improves on the previous year’s performance by 10 percent and if it failed the previous year.

MAPLE PARK – Kaneland High School’s 2013 graduates scored the highest composite ACT score in the district’s history, according to a news release issued Friday.

The composite score was 21.5, and students also scored 21.5 in math, science and reading, with a 21 in English. Those comparisons are based on graduates who took the test without accommodations, “as this allows for a true comparison to scores from prior years,” the release said.

Starting in 2013, the ACT changed which students are included in the senior report, meaning that from 2013 or beyond, the ACT will no longer exclude scores in the ACT senior report for students who took the test with accommodations, according to the release.

Going forward, that will create a new baseline for com-

paring scores.

The district tallied the composite scores to include students with accommodations, and those numbers still showed an improvement in the composite, math and science scores. With a composite score of 21.1 with accommodations, students scored a 20.4 in English; a 21.2 in math; a 21 in reading; and 21.1 in science.

Scores in all areas are above the state of Illinois averages, with the composite being a half-point higher, the release said.

“Our mission is to graduate all students college, career and community ready,” Superintendent Jeff Schuler said, according to the news release. “Consistent with our mission, we applaud the decision ACT has made to include students with accommodations in the senior report. Our 2013 results show significant growth on the ACT and we are proud of the students that have achieved these results.”

Little green men – also known as annual cicadas – are taking the Tri-Cities by storm this summer.

Listen for them in and around mature trees in yards, parks and natural areas.

Keep your eyes open for little green men When was the last time you saw a little green man?

For me, it was last Saturday. I was walking through the Hickory Knolls savanna when something small and bright caught my eye. I looked closely and there he was, all shiny and chartreuse: a freshly emerged cicada, clinging to his now-empty shell.

Cicadas are reliable performers in nature’s summer symphony, sounding off from July through September from the branches of trees throughout the Tri-Cities.

But their loud finish stands in stark contrast to their quiet beginnings.

The adult insects we’re hearing right now started off as eggs that were laid between two and five years ago, depending on species. Way back then, a little woman or female cicada, used her sawlike ovipositor to cut slits at the end of a branch and laid eggs under the bark. Upon

There they remained, feeding on plant roots and shedding their hard outer skin, or exoskeleton, four or five times before finally clawing their way back up above ground for one final molt.

If you happen to find a cast exoskeleton, or exuvia, take a look at the forelegs and you’ll see how well adapted cicada nymphs are for tunneling through the earth. Thick and powerful looking, the juvenile legs have a bulk even Popeye would be proud of.

They look much different from the legs of an adult cicada, which typically spends the few weeks of its short

life above ground high in a tree. The insect’s objective has switched from feeding to breeding, and that’s where the sound comes in.

Male cicadas are choristers, sending out species-specific songs in an effort to find a mate and complete their circle of life. Using special sound-producing structures called tymbals, located where the abdomen meets the thorax, they advertise their fitness and availability to female cicadas that likely are listening nearby.

Chances are you’ve been listening in as well, whether you want to or not. Cicadas are among our loudest insects. I remember sitting in a classroom along the quad at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign one warm August day. The windows were open, and I could hear the cicadas more clearly than I could the professor.

Bob was a proud member of the 5th Marine Division and was among the first ashore at Iwo Jima, where he was awarded a Purple Heart. He was self-employed for

many years as a carpenter and sider. Bob and Lee combined their families Dec. 28, 1968, and resided in Geneva until 1996, when they moved to Sebring, Fla. Lee enjoyed crafting, decorating cakes and helping with her grandkids.

If you listen closely, you’ll notice that different species make different sounds; they also call during different times of day.

Some, like the dog day cicada, Tibicen canicularis, produce an even tone that rises in both pitch and volume before sputtering off at the end, and is commonly heard in the afternoon and evening until dusk.

Others, like the scissor-grinder cicada, Tibicen pruinosa, make a slow, pulsating sound, also in afternoon in the evening.

And the lyric cicada,

Tibicen lyricen, sings a song with a vibrating quality, mainly in the morning and early afternoon.

Soon, though, the cicada-song season will be drawing to a close.

Already it’s not hard to find dead ones on the streets and sidewalks.

Some have been predated

(cicadas not only are noisy, but also nutritious), while others are just plain done.

While many cicadas are winding down, a few are just starting up.

This weekend, keep your eyes open as you walk past tree trunks, fence posts, even garages.

A full day of learning Schools offer, or consider offering, all-day kindergarten programs

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com Amanda Ellis, a mother of two, said she moved to the Geneva area because of topnotch schools.

Her son, Ethan, 5, is entering kindergarten this year, and Ellis said she felt he was ready for a full day of school rather than a half day. But as of now, the Geneva School District offers only the halfday option, and Ellis said she felt her son could benefit a lot more from a full-day program.

She said she made a financial sacrifice and enrolled him at the private Kensington School

just for kindergarten.

“I think having the extended day, there are more opportunities for extended enrichment,” she said. “At Kensington, they also add science, music and art. With 2½ hours, when are you going to do all this enrichment?”

That’s one of the points at the center of the all-day kindergarten debate, which recently resurfaced within the Geneva School District.

Administrators there started looking into offering an allday program in 2008, but the slumped economy prevented them from implementing any plans, Superintendent Kent

Mutchler said.

He said the district formed a committee six years ago and started researching the issue in 2008. Part of the issue then was finding enough funding to support the program, he said, as the district would need to hire new teachers and “basically double [the] kindergarten staff.” Estimates in 2008 showed the cost of hiring 12 teachers and 12 assistants could add up to about $840,000 a year, according to a committee report.

But the research into whether an all-day program would be valuable was clear.

“The research without dis-

pute shows that if it’s something you do right, it really benefits the kids,” he said.

“The reason we’re looking at it again is because of Common Core [state] standards being brought to us by the state and federal government that require more time with the kids.”

Among the new standards, the Common Core provides higher, clearer, deeper real-life learning for college and career. The state adopted the standards in 2010. Geneva

now is in the process of forming a new committee, Mutchler said, that will focus on how the program would look and how it might be implemented.

Some school districts in the area offer all-day kindergarten, including St. Charles and Kaneland. Mutchler said any changes in Geneva’s offering would come from the committee’s report.

Aldermen will be asked to recommend a Plan Commission public hearing on whether to amend the city code to consolidate into one, according to the agenda.

“Our idea was to combine

the two to expedite our development review process,” DeGroot said. “If there is a need for review, it has to go before the ZBA and the plan commission if they need a special use.”

The other factor was that the zoning board went 2½ years without a meeting, DeGroot said.

“People want to be part of the communities, and an inactive board is not doing justice to them,” DeGroot said. “Two new members never heard a case until last May. The Plan Commission meets pretty frequently – once a month and sometimes more than that.”

The district still offers a half-day program, and she said about 40 percent of families choose the all-day program.

Families can choose the full-day program in Kaneland, but they must pay an additional fee.

Mumm said the cost to attend the all-day program is $250 a month, and the half-day program costs $120 for the entire year. She said the cost of the all-day program has been a deterrent to some families, but said the district tries to work with parent-teacher groups and Kaneland foundations to offer scholarships.

While it’s entering only its second year, she said the all-day program seems to be paying off.

“The academic scores of students in extended day kindergarten came out higher

than they have in past kindergarten sections,” Mumm said. “Some came out stronger readers, and scores on post-tests came out higher, so we’re excited to see how that equates into first-grade learning.”

The St. Charles School District is entering its fifth year of offering an all-day kindergarten program, but still offers a half-day option. Becky McCabe, an assistant superintendent at St. Charles School District 303, said 416 students participate in the all-day program, while 235 participate in the half-day program.

“I think most people think their 5-year-olds are ready for an all-day experience,” she said.

Some families choose the half-day program because it works out better for their schedules, she noted. However, some families choose it because it fits their budget, she said.

The cost of the all-day program is $219 per child per month, but that cost is pro-rated for students on free and re-

duced lunch. She said the only cost for the half-day program is the registration fee, which is about $50.

“Cost has been a barrier for some families. We recognize that, and we did lower the cost of the program this year with that intention,” McCabe said. “When we did our planning for the all-day program, we wanted to make sure the child in the half-day program got all the benefits in terms of curricular instruction, and the real core content is in the morning.”

Some parents said they don’t mind paying the extra cost because of the educational benefits that come with an all-day program.

Lindsey Brems of Geneva said she’s been keeping an eye on the all-day kindergarten debate in Geneva because her oldest son, who will soon turn 4, will enter kindergarten in the next few years.

“I think an investment in early childhood education is the best investment you can make,” she said. “I’d pay for it in a heartbeat.”

Failing the test in Batavia Illinois driver’s licenses and state IDs for those younger than 21 might as well have red flags and flashing warning lights attached to them. Each license has a vertical display, not horizontal.

In addition, there is a red stripe, on which there is wording that indicates the cardholder is younger than 21.

If someone displays such an ID, those tasked with checking to make certain someone is legally able to order alcoholic beverages clearly should be able to determine that the person is too young.

But in Batavia, a recent liquor enforcement campaign resulted in a disappointing showing.

Thirteen of the city’s 34 businesses with liquor licenses failed the test.

Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke said all but two of the businesses were first-time offenders, and all will be fined, with the repeat offenders facing a higher fine. Also, the server who violated the code would participate in Basset training. Schielke added they all will be retested soon, and those that fail again can expect a harsher penalty – Schielke said a suspension of the businesses’ liquor license could be in order, saying “serious action” would have to be taken.

“That’s where we’ll go,” Schielke said.

The operation worked like this – one of two selected people younger than 21 was sent to the Batavia establishments,

with an undercover officer nearby. They attempted to purchase liquor and showed identification if they were asked. If they were served, the undercover officer would spring into action, and the server would be issued a citation. Schielke said it had been 18 months since the last test in Batavia.

It is baffling that so many businesses could fail such a test. There has been much fanfare over the campaign to prevent underage drinking, and it’s not uncommon for customers much older than 21 to be asked to produce an ID. If there is no trickery involved – a fake ID, perhaps – it should not be difficult to see the person isn’t old enough to purchase an alcoholic beverage.

Schielke pointed out that underage drinking has led to traffic fatalities in Batavia. There are reasons those younger than 21 are not allowed to legally drink. There is no excuse for businesses to allow it to happen, and it’s stunning that 13 out of 34 businesses in a city should fail such a test.

The Batavia businesses that failed the test should consider themselves fortunate to escape with a mere fine this time. Those in charge should embrace this opportunity to identify what went wrong and drive home the point to all employees that it won’t be tolerated again. Anything less than 100 percent success for the retest would be unacceptable.

I was complimenting one or two on the trim appearance they showed one year to the next, and I couldn’t get very far because they broke in and told me how well I looked.

One of them asked me how old I was. I told them and their jaws dropped. A couple of them said that I could have told them I was 15 years younger, and they would have believed me.

8SOUND OFF It is interesting to read our esteemed state senator say that the biggest benefit from an increased speed limit will be that it will reduce the amount of drivers that ignore the posted speed limit. Does he really think that way? The same ones who ignore the previous speed limit will ignore this one. Now that is out of the way. Why not work on stop signs? We could take them all out and replace them with yield signs. Probably the same people who ignore speed limits also ignore stop signs. It would be one less thing for them to ignore.

Wonderful dogs

Thankful for blood donors I recently had to be in the hospital and received several blood transfusions. As I lie in bed, watching the blood drip into my very weak body, it made me think of the wonderful people who donate the blood.

the kids, and how many middle school students look the same from one year to the next? I called the school, and they said this way, they could get the IDs

printed and to the students on the first day of school instead of having to wait a week or so. I don’t understand the tragedy of having to wait a week or so.

Just a filibuster session There was a meeting last night at St. Mark’s Church in Geneva.

And they had, supposedly, some pretty high-powered people there promoting the immigration reform bill that was passed by the Senate. Those of us who went to the meeting realize that all it was, was a filibuster session, with no real proposals other than, pass the bill and, emotionally, make sure we take care of these illegal immigrants.

Not one time did they mention about the unemployed American citizens. Not one time did they look at the poor and underprivileged Americans who are out of work and need jobs.

Everything was about, we need these illegal immigrants. I have not seen one bit of evidence that we need immigrants to work in this country. What I have seen is our educational system is failing to educate our students to take these jobs, so we have to file for all these extra visas that kowtow to immigrants but don’t do anything for American citizens.

American citizens have to pay through the nose to go to college, but yet private scholarships are paying for illegal immigrants and immigrants to go to college, and guess where they’re going to college? Here in the United States, where they say our children aren’t educated enough to take the jobs in the United States. We don’t have enough people to fill the STEM requirements.

Why the light sentence?

Why such a light sentence for Jesse Jackson Jr. and his wife? [If] it was anybody else, he would have gotten a longer sentence. All these people who sent those letters to say he is good and this and that … isn’t that discrimination? He got such a light sentence, and Rod Blagojevich, who was the former Illinois governor, gets 14 years? I can’t understand this.

The St. Charles City Council recently approved a three-year agreement between the city and the St. Charles Professional Firefighters Association, IAFF Local 3322.

The contract is effective from May 1 to April 30, 2016, and covers the city’s 44 firefighters, lieutenants and captains, Human Resources Director Kathy Livernois said.

Wage increases are planned for each year.

Annual increases are 2.25 percent for firefighters; 2.75 percent for firefighters/paramedics; and 2 percent for lieutenants and captains.

“We do it based on comparable communities,” Livernois said. “We feel very comfortable with the percentages being given.”

Other monetary benefits – step increases for those with less than five years with the department; a stipend for lieutenants and captains who are certified as paramedics; and longevity pay – were unchanged from the previous contract, Livernois said.

Most of the changes were in the language, she said. For example, she said, the drug and alcohol policy was updated.

The firefighters contract was the third agreement reached this year with city employees. The patrol officers’ and police sergeants’ contracts were settled in the spring.

Negotiations with the teamsters are next on the docket, Livernois said, noting their contract expires April 30, 2014.

I’m responding to “Shut down puppy mills.” We have purchased two puppies from a store, and we’ve had good luck.

As far as the medical bills, to the person who says shut down puppy mills, if you adopt a baby, how do you find out about the medical condition of the parents who had the baby? You don’t return the baby, do you? It’s the same with a puppy. I’ve had friends who have adopted dogs at a shelter, and that is why I went to a puppy store. They had nothing but bad luck. The dogs were aggressive. They said the dogs were 2 years old, but they were 4 years old. It’s a chance you take. That’s life. Life is a chance of choices and decisions.

The puppy mills at the stores?

Keep them going. We’ve got two wonderful dogs here.

Coroner, board chairman clash over coroner’s budget

By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Kane County’s coroner believes his office needs more money next year to do the work it is obligated by law to do.

Members of the Kane County Board, however – and particularly, Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen – believe Kane County Coroner Rob Russell may need to do more to demonstrate that need before he is given the money he has requested.

Russell presented his $943,000 budget request Friday to the Kane County Board’s Judicial and Public Safety Committee. The budget request, which is the first submitted by Russell since he was elected coroner last November, marks an increase of about 24 percent from last year’s $757,000.

Russell said the increase is needed to help him more appropriately pay his deputy coroners for work outside normal business hours.

In previous years, Russell said coroner deputies were paid a base salary, plus $90 per call for “after-hours events” under a policy put in place by Russell’s predecessor, former coroner Chuck West.

Russell said deputies should be paid $100 for days they are on call, plus hourly overtime for after-hours work.

Russell said that change would result in the need for an additional $144,000.

However, Russell suggested the county instead hire two additional deputy coroners, at salaries of $40,000 each, to reduce the need for overtime.

Russell said the need is mounting, because his office expects to respond to about 767 calls this year, and more than 800 next year.

Russell’s request, however, was questioned by Lauzen.

Lauzen noted no other county offices had requested such a large increase, even though they also could claim to be “shortchanged” by county budgeting procedures.

Lauzen questioned whether Russell had sought “efficiencies” in his office that could reduce the need for the larger budget.

He asked Russell to agree to allow a third-party evaluation of his office to support the assumptions that underpin his budget request.

Lauzen suggested Kane County Auditor Terry Hunt perform that evaluation.

Russell rejected that suggestion, saying he wanted any such evaluation performed by the Illinois Coroners and Medical Examiners Association, an association populated by professionals who best understand his office’s duties.

Lauzen, however, said he believes the coroners association would not be “an unbiased source, as far as the taxpayers’ perspective.”

“My statistical data is accurate,” Russell said. “A third party doesn’t know what we do. The only third party that knows what we do are those that do what we do.”

All is not lost for Saints Morale still high despite ACL injury for forward Hull

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Crosses, shots and redirects flew from nearly every angle as the St. Charles East boys soccer team closed a recent workout on a truncated portion of a practice field.

No single Saint differentiated himself, largely because every single Saint darted in pursuit of the ball.

It’s a rare condition when one drill personifies a team, but egalitarian East appears to be on to something after last fall’s breakthrough run to a Class 3A supersectional.

“It’s great to know that you can pass to anybody on the field and they can do as good of a job, as great of a job, as anybody. Anyone can put the ball in the back of the net,” senior midfielder Andrew Shone said.

“We’re not a team that you can just say, ‘Let’s put two guys on a forward,’ because if you do that with our team, we have 10 other guys who are going to put the ball in the back of the net.”

Shone’s math suggests the goalkeeping tandem of Chris Lucatorto and Mike Novotny will look to leave the net unattended and join the attack, but that’s not so. It’s simply Shone’s confidence showing as an upbeat mindset permeates practices despite the sight of a certain dynamic forward on the sideline.

Southern Illinois-Edwardsville recruit T.C. Hull, the 2012 Kane County Chronicle Player of the Year, is expected to miss the entire season after tearing his right ACL during a club game in the spring.

Hull’s 31 goals as a junior have left the scene, but Hull is a different story.

“Every single day, he’s been here. He’s taking part in whatever he can. He’s helping the lads out,” Saints coach Paul Jennison said. “Of course, he gets a little bit of grief here and there.

They like to laugh and joke with him. But he’s a massive part of this team still. And, you know, the way I operate, I’m not washing my hands of him because he got injured. He’s one of the reasons that we were where we were last year, and he’s a massive part of this team.”

Even if Hull had been participating in practices and games – not shouting his support during them – East insists he’d be regarded no differently.

With Shone and classmate Daniel DiLeonardi among

those returning to the attack and incumbents including Kevin Heinrich and Jake Sterling on hand at defender, the Saints proudly tout a depth that has quickly produced chemistry.

Once their club seasons ended, team captains Heinrich, Shone and Sterling frequently texted athletes on all levels about impromptu summer workouts designed to increase touches.

bigger schools in the hopes it gets the Knights deeper than last season’s sectional final run. “We’ve kind of upped the ante the past few years playing some stronger, bigger schools,” veteran coach Scott Parillo said. “That’s usually a good test for us.”

MARMION Perennial Suburban Christian Conference contenders await another likely duel with Wheaton Academy before a hopeful postseason run. Coach Ricky Del Toro’s club aims to attack more and be less possession-based than in the past, but

there are guys in the back still worthy of attention. Goalkeeper Matt Fletcher, who stands 6-foot-2, is a converted defender.

The Saints’ crossover game will come Sept. 20 at Neuqua Valley.

Fields said East will have the same two nonconference opponents it has this year again in 2014 – South Elgin and Jacobs – but he would like to return West Aurora to the Saints’ annual slate after that.

“Keep it close to home,” Fields said. “It’s good for fans to not have to travel so far

and still get good, competitive games, and that’s what we’re trying to establish.”

The IHSA instituted new restrictions on preseason practice this season that curtailed teams’ ability to stick with their usual two-a-day regimen in the preseason.

Fields said that was evident in the quality of some of the Saints’ recent practices.

“We’re seeing the effects of not having that second doubles week, I’ll tell you that,” Fields said. “ … You just deal with it and move on, but I wish the days were longer.”

Santos ‘more comfortable’ at prep school: Earlier this week, we reported on KJ Santos opting to transfer from Geneva to a prep school, Vermont Academy, for his junior year.

Santos, a 6-foot-7 wing, has Division I scholarship offers from Xavier, VCU and DePaul, among others. Joe Santos expressed some regret that his son’s basketball experience at Geneva did not pan out the way the family had hoped but did not want to publicly delve into specifics, saying “the kid’s more comfortable in leaving than staying.”

“Geneva’s a fantastic community … but I don’t know what happened with KJ here,” Joe Santos said. “I just don’t get it, and more importantly, the kid wants to go.”

Joe Santos confirmed that senior girls basketball standout Sidney Santos, KJ’s older sister, will remain at Geneva.

Another older sister, Ashley Santos, graduated from Geneva and plays collegiately at Marquette.

The Saints hope to defend their league title – and, ideally, their regional and sectional plaques after that – all while taking things further than last

fall.

Eventual Class 3A state champion Warren edged the Saints, 2-1, in a hotly contested supersectional, clamping down on defense after an early East goal.

Although Hull is unavailable, the development of last season’s role players and the return of forward Kevin Robbins, who played academy ball as a sophomore, still makes for an eager bunch.

“The energy level is never going to drop, so that’s the benefit,” Shone said.

“Teams are never going to get a break against us, hopefully.”

That certainly would not happen at the end of practice.

St. Charles East will have to wait one day longer to open its football season than most, but Saints coach Mike Fields thinks the matinee matchup against host South Elgin one week from today will be worth the wait.

In fact, if Fields has his way, East and South Elgin will remain football scheduling partners for years to come.

“We loved the location just because we’re so close to each other,” Fields said. “I love those rivalries that are close together. We really thought this would be a good fit for both teams, thought it would be a very competitive game.

I’d like to see it be long-term.

I’d like to play against South Elgin for years here, and we’re trying to get that done. “ … I’m a big tradition guy. If we could sign them the next 10 years, I would love it because I think tradition is a

Shoulders adds 2-run homer in series finale

“Velocity’s kind of a byproduct to me of arm strength and good mechanics,” Baker said. “In the beginning, I was kind of struggling to kind of find it a little bit. So, once you’re trying to find it and just trying to guide it or aim it – that never has a good effect. That’s always an adverse effect for me when I’m trying to guide the ball.”

The only run Baker yielded was on Matt Olson’s solo homer to right leading off the second. It was his 22nd round-tripper of the season and 85th RBI, putting him in the top three in each of those categories in the Midwest League.

The Cougars tied the game in the bottom of the second off Beloit starter Deyvi Jimenez on an RBI single by Trevor Gretzky, who also started the winning four-run rally in the bottom of the seventh with a one-out single to center.

Gretzky is hitting .412 in his first five games with the Cougars since being promoted from Boise.

Jeimer Candelario’s twoout, bloop single to left off Trevor Bayless (1-2) scored Gretzky and Gioskar Amaya, and Rock Shoulders followed with a two-run homer that just cleared the left-field wall.

The homer was the team-leading 18th of the season for Shoulders.

Justin Amlung (5-4) followed Baker to the mound and threw three scoreless innings of relief to pick up the victory.

Andrew McKirahan pitched the final two innings, allowing a run in the eighth.

Baker, who has not pitched in the majors since August 2011 due to right elbow problems that eventually required Tommy John surgery last year, said he’s not sure what his timetable will be going forward.

“Your guess is as good as mine,” he said. “I’m day-today. I just try to be a good employee and do as I’m told. I’m not sure where the next step will be.”

The Cougars will open a seven-game road trip, their last trip of the year, with the opener of a four-game series at 6:35 tonight in Wisconsin against the Timber Rattlers.

They’ll return to Geneva for their final series of the season, Aug. 31 to Sept. 2, against Peoria.

Have you gotten a sneak peek of the stadium? Have you looked over there much?

Yeah, it’s beautiful. I’m really excited to play on it.

What’s the best aspect of having a stadium on campus?

Just the people that are going to be there. I know kids that didn’t go to the game just because it wasn’t at home, it was a little bit of a farther drive to [College of DuPage], and now everybody’s going to show up. It’s going to be nuts. It’s going to be a great opening day.

Who are some guys who impressed you in summer camp and the first few days of regular practice?

Johnny Vargyas. He’s a linebacker. Me and him

Was [Butler] able to practice last year when he had to sit out?

Actually, me and him both weren’t because we both came from the same school, we both transferred from Bartlett.

Did you guys help each other get through it a little bit?

Oh yeah. We drove to school, we did everything together. We both were really disappointed together when we heard the news [their appeals were denied].

We did everything together.

We would study for football practices and go out there and go help the team out as much as we could.

So you know [Butler] real well, what are people going to see from him this year?

Well, I’ve played with him my whole life, and he’s only gotten better over the years. He’s going to come out even better than he’s ever been, even with [having to sit out during the 2012 season].

GENEVA – Scott Baker has yet to throw a pitch at the bigleague level since signing a one-year, $5.5 million contract with the Cubs in November, but the 31-year-old righthander hopes he took a step toward returning to the majors Friday night after another rehabilitation outing with the Kane County Cougars.

Making his fourth appearance with the Cubs‘ Class A affiliate, Baker helped the Cougars salvage the final game of a three-game series with Be- R. Shoulders loit, throwing four innings in their 5-2 victory.

The win snapped a fivegame losing streak for the Cougars (51-74, 21-38 second half).

Baker got off to a shaky start, giving up three hits – including a home run – and walking a pair in the first two innings.

“I felt like I started off a little slow, a little lethargic, but I kind of picked it up as the game went on,” Baker said.

Baker’s fastball was topping out at about 86 mph in the first two innings, but he was throwing it consistently at 88-89 mph

Really well.

Yes, I know, the Bears beat up on the hapless Oakland Raiders, a once proud franchise that now is about one chuckle short of a laughingstock. And, yes, I know it’s the preseason, and we shouldn’t read too much (good or bad) into these games.

But as the following checklist shows, the Bears’ starters on both sides of the Next up ball passed Bears vs. every test in their third Cleveland, 7 p.m., Thursday, game of the FOX, AM-780 preseason.

Here’s some news that is even better. The real action is only 15 days away.

Starting offense Task: Score at least one first-half touchdown Grade: PASS Forget one first-half touchdown. Try three. Yes, the Raiders seem to know as much about tackling as Rod

Blagojevich knows about ethics, but the Bears’ first-team offense deserved plenty of credit for its sustained drives.

Matt Forte dashed down the sideline to turn a swing pass into a 32-yard touchdown, and Michael Bush rumbled forward for a pair of north-south scores. Not bad. Not bad at all.

Starting defense Task: Notch at least one first-half takeaway Grade: PASS Ho hum. Just another impressive performance by the Bears’ veteran-laden defense.

In the first quarter, Tim Jennings stepped forward to intercept Raiders quarterback Matt Flynn. That takeaway set up the Bears’ first touchdown one play later. In the second quarter, Isaiah Frey showed great focus to intercept another one of Flynn’s passes across the middle.

After Frey’s pick, a camera showed some of the Bears’ defensive coaches high-fiving each other in the booth. It was tough to blame them.

Jay Cutler Task: Target someone other than Brandon Marshall Grade: PASS Cutler feigned annoyance during practice this week when he was asked about spreading the wealth – last week against San Diego, he

targeted Marshall five times out of five. Based on Friday’s game, someone got the message through to Cutler that he has more than one target on offense. Cutler’s first pass went to Alshon Jeffery, and his second pass went to Martellus Bennett.

Someone other than Brandon Marshall Task: Catch the ball when Cutler targets you Grade: PASS Jeffery capitalized on his opportunities, catching seven passes for 77 yards before halftime. It’s going to be important this season for Jeffery to gain Cutler’s trust on a full-time basis, particularly if a concussion continues to keep veteran Earl Bennett off of the field.

Surprisingly, it was Marshall who struggled to catch the ball, dropping an easy pass on third down that forced the Bears to settle for a field goal.

Rookies on the offensive line Task: Take another step to-

ward starting in Week 1 Grade: PASS Raise your hand if you missed seeing J’Marcus Webb line up with the first-team offensive line in the first half.

Yeah, we didn’t think so. The rookie tandem of right guard Kyle Long and right tackle Jordan Mills provided another reason to suggest that they will line up with the starters come Sept. 8 against the Cincinnati Bengals.

more than a one-hit wonder Grade: PASS Bostic flashed in each of the Bears’ first two preseason games, but only for one play apiece. Against the Raiders, Bostic provided several great plays by chasing down Flynn on one run, containing Terrelle Pryor in one-on-one coverage on another, and stuffing running back Rashad Jennings in the backfield for a 1-yard loss.

Grade: PASS Whenever something goes wrong for the Bears this season – and something will go wrong, it’s inevitable – just take a deep breath, unclench your fists, and remind yourself that it could be worse.

Tommylee Lewis worked out in a limited capacity Friday. He hadn’t practiced for nearly two weeks.

He was impressive the first week of camp before he injured his leg, and will be a big weapon for Jordan Lynch this year.

Akeem Daniels had a helmet, T-shirt and shorts on, and caught some passes from the JUGS machine.

It’s the first time I’ve seen him do any sort of activity during fall camp, as he’s been out while recovering from foot surgery.

Cornerback Sean Evans, who’s been out the past few days, was practicing as well.

• Iowa’s fight song has been blaring a lot at practice this week as the team has started its Hawkeye preparation.

NIU will hold its final workout of fall camp today, which will be a mock game.

The Huskies will go through game situations, from pregame until the end.

• Speaking of Iowa, the Hawkeyes have named Jake Rudock their starting quarterback. The 6-foot-3, 205-pound sophomore hasn’t thrown a pass in his career.

• Sophomore outside linebacker Rasheen “Rock” Lemon didn’t prac-

tice. NIU head coach Rod Carey said it’s a minor shoulder injury. Expect him back soon.

In his place was Geneva productMichael Santacaterina, who is listed as the backup middle linebacker on the team’s preseason depth chart, and should see time on the outside as well.

• Boomer Mays made a few nice plays at middle linebacker. He got some experience last year, and could be in for a solid season.

DeKALB – Northern Illinois doesn’t win the 2011 shootout at Toledo without Tommylee Lewis and his back-to-back kickoff return touchdowns.

Marlon Moore started six games at cornerback last season. Running back Keith Harris Jr. scored NIU’s first touchdown in the season-opening loss to Iowa last year. Jimmie Ward blocked a school-record three punts in 2010 and was NIU’s Special Teams Player of the Year.

All of them made an impact as true freshmen.

At NIU, it’s not very common to see many true freshmen take the field. Whether to play certain newcomers who can make an impact and burn their redshirts, or have them for their fifth season, is a tough decision coaches have to deal with throughout fall camp.

Thirty true freshmen line NIU’s roster, and you’ll see only a handful of them on the field this season. Most will spend the year with the scout team and be available for a fifth year. Two who could

Carey gets input from his assistants every day. It’s a long process. The staff takes a number of things into their decision, including each individual’s makeup.

Last season, tight end Desroy Maxwell was one of six true freshmen to play. The others were Harris, Moore, wide receiver Jacob Brinlee, linebacker Mike Cotton and defensive end Perez Ford.

One of the reasons Maxwell didn’t redshirt was because former head coach Dave Doeren wanted him to travel with the team and learn from last year’s starter at tight end, Jason Schepler.

Maxwell still texts Schepler for advice, and said playing last year helped him with simple things like confidence.

Maxwell played in 12 games last year, and was mainly used as a blocker. He did have the 35-yard run on a fake punt in the Orange Bowl.

“I think nerves is a big part of it. I got it out of the way last year,” he said. “Now I can just focus on playing.”

Moore was able to improve in the film room.

“The experience helped me out a lot, because now I know how to study film,” said Moore, who had two interceptions and four pass breakups last year. “I know how to read the receivers, opponents that I’m going against for the next game.”

Waubonsee to hold cheerleading tryouts SUGAR GROVE – Tryouts for Waubonsee’ Community College’s Co-Ed Competitive Cheerleading squad will be Wednesday, beginning at 6 p.m. in Erickson Hall on the Sugar Grove campus. All participants are required to fill out an application form which is available in the Waubonsee Athletic Office, also located in Erickson Hall.

Driving: What’s a milestone for teens, instills panic in parents I hate to break it to my kid, the one who hates it when I put stickers on my car, but I’m getting another one for my new stickermobile. Yes indeed, he got his learner’s permit last Saturday morning and I ordered the “Student Driver” sticker that afternoon – after his first session in the driver’s seat. He did pretty well, actually. I only had to grab the wheel once.

Saved a mailbox. But that sticker (well, I think it’s a magnet, actually) better get here quick.

The Department of Motor Vehicles office in Aurora was a busy place that morning. Crowded. Filled-beyond capacity, standing-room only. It was the weekend before school started, and it seemed like every 15-year-old in the county who planned to begin driver’s education at their high schools this week was there.

And they each had at least one parent with them. Every one of those parents was grinning, myself included. What proud fools we all are. After all, our car insurance rates are about to skyrocket.

“If you take a picture of me while I’m taking the test they’ll think we’re cheating,” Noah said, as we waited in line.

Shoot. Whatever. I hadn’t even pulled my phone out of my pocket yet. The kid’s a mind-reader.

We got to the front of the second line where he was asked to sign something. He put his wallet on the counter and picked up the pen. I reached around him and grabbed the wallet, so we wouldn’t leave

A moment later he realized it was missing.

“Someone stole my wallet,” he said, slightly panicked.

I handed it back to him. I hadn’t meant to teach him a lesson, but there it was. I love it when they happen by accident.

“There’s nothing in it but a free Frosty card,” he admitted, smiling.

“Not after today, there won’t be,” I said.

“Twenty,” was all the next clerk said, at the next counter.

That was it. Just “twenty.”

Noah handed her the money and she stamped his application.

“Mom,” she said, “you can have a seat in general [seating].”

Ah. My cue to cut the cord, I guess. (I wonder if she ever says anything else but “twenty” and, “Mom, you can have a seat in general,” all day. What must that be like? Does she say it in her sleep?) I did as I was told and then she handed him the test.

Five minutes later Noah was back in line. A different one this time, where his

test was graded. He passed with flying colors. I resisted the urge to cheer “whoo hoo!” like I do at the kids’ soccer games, but I did grin. A lot. And then we called Geico. Fortunately, the rates don’t actually go up until next year, when he gets his license. Sweet! But we still needed to add him to the policy. Just in case.

When Grandma found out he was driving, she said, “Just remember, never drive faster than your guardian angel can fly.” For some reason, though, Noah keeps rambling on about some movie called “The Fast and the Furious.”

Whatever it is, it can’t be good. But I’m not taking any chances. I’ve spent a good bit of time with him in the parking lot at the park, having him see how far he can go, how much he can do and how far he can turn the wheel – without ever putting his foot on the gas, so he can realize that there’s a ton of subtle and effective maneuvering he can do without ever leaning on the pedals.

On our second pass through the lot, we passed near the pair of tall pine trees that he used to climb. I remember when that was the scariest thing he ever did. Those were the days.

“Realize that at any moment a kid on a scooter could appear,” I said soberly, as we practiced braking.

“Yeah, like me, chasing after a tennis ball,” he said, recalling that awful moment five years ago when one got away from him in our driveway and rolled

into the street. He ran after it. Thank God he’d been wearing a helmet (he’d just gotten off his bike), because when the car hit him, he flew up and several feet away, into the oncoming lane, where he landed and hit his head. All he had to show for it were a few bruises, but the hair around my temples went gray overnight. I suppose it’ll all go gray, now that he’s driving, but I digress.

“This is gonna be hard,” Noah said, later, when he observed me driving through an intersection at Randall Road.

“Nah,” I said, and laughed, “but I bet you have a new appreciation for how hard it’s been for me when I’m driving and people are bickering or haranguing me, right?” He grinned.

He nodded. He got it. It was one of those moments we parents pine for, that, “You’ll know what I mean, someday,” moment. Wow. I wasn’t expecting that.

“So, what was it like watching your big brother drive away?” I asked Holly, after Noah and I returned from our joyride.

She shrugged, clearly nonplussed.

“But Daddy was a nervous wreck,” she said.

Uh huh, yeah. So, where is that sticker, anyway?

Fall means it’s jam-canning season Even though it is warm this week, you can feel that fall is in the air. The hummingbirds that love to feed on my Black and Blue Salvia have arrived; mums are available at the greenhouses, and it is harvest time, which also means canning season.

My garden plot partner Mary Ann and I have been busy harvesting and canning the last couple of weeks. It first began with pickled beets, then several varieties of jam, and today

If you are new to canning, there are several online resources to get you started, including the National Center for Home Food Preservation – www.nchfp.uga.edu – which is a good place to start.

To begin your canning adventure, grab a friend and a bottle of wine. I find that canning is much more fun when you are sharing the experience with the company of a good friend.

Next, decide what you are going to can and make sure you have all of the ingredients.

Jellies should cool for 12 hours • CANNING Continued from page 31 I went to the farmer’s market in Aurora on Wednesday and purchased 10 pounds of gorgeous, delicious blueberries; let the jam making begin.

The recipe we used called for 9 cups of crushed blueberries – so we pulled out the food processor and crushed away.

Next, we placed the blueberries in a large pot on the stove to begin the cooking process and added the rest of the ingredients. Be sure to follow jam and jelly recipes as they are written. Do not attempt to double them or they will not gel properly.

The trickiest part of jelly or jam making is to know when it is set. You can either heat it to a specific temperature – typically 216 degrees for our altitude or use the spoon/sheet test.

This test is done by dipping a cool metal spoon into the boiling jelly mixture. Raise the spoon out of the steam about 12 inches above the pan; turn the spoon so the liquid runs off the side. The jelly is done when the syrup forms two drops that flow together and form a sheet that hangs off the edge of the

spoon.

Then it’s time to put the jelly in hot, sterilized jars. Be sure to take a damp paper towel and wipe the brim and outside threads of the jar of any juice or syrup that might prevent the jars from sealing. Now it is time to water bath the jars for the time specified. A little tip that makes water bathing a breeze is to use the side burner on your outdoor gas grill. It heats up significantly faster than the burners on your stove; it also frees up stove space while making the jam.

Once the jars have been processed, be sure to let them set out and cool. It’s most important that jellies be allowed to cool for 12 hours before the jars are disturbed. Moving them can break the gel process.

Now, it’s time to uncork that bottle of wine ... you’re done!

Jam, jellies and other preserves make great care packages to send to those kids away at college or enjoy in your own home on freshly toasted slice of bread. Happy canning!

Matthew Alan’s self-published novella ‘The Hero’ fascinatingly unexpected in a time when sexuality was such a taboo subject. And watched older friends and relatives remain closeted even after events started progressing in the world of gay rights. “The Hero” is a combination of those passions and interests.

“One Degree” is a story of how family, friends, and circumstances shape our growth. Matthew tells an interesting story that begins through the eyes and perspective of 9-year-old Karl and follows his growth as he experiences life.

The reader is privy to all Karl’s decisions that alter his life path, all the way to and including his death seventy-three years later.

Now, normally I might end this introduction by saying “One Degree” is well worth readers’ time and money. But Matthew also self-published a novella titled “The Hero,” and that is the story that made me sit up and take notice.

So much so that I asked author, book reviewer, and fellow Rainbow Awards judge Tom “T.A.” Webb to read “The Hero.”

Tom’s verdict? “I was fascinated.”

Tom also found Matthew’s writing and story to be “enjoyable and interesting.”

You see, “The Hero” wasn’t what either of us expected, not at all. “The Hero” is about a gay superhero who agrees to be interviewed by Anderson Cooper. The character’s complexity is unveiled as The Hero identifies and comes to terms with what is expected of him versus his own hopes and dreams.

This is one of those stories that could inspire debate and discussion on a variety of levels. It’s thought provoking, and yet told in a manner that allows for an easy, very entertaining read.

“One Degree” and “The Hero” both offer insight to a talented author we all should keep an eye out for to see what he does next.

DA Kentner: “One Degree” was a seven-year labor of love. What was it about this story that held your interest to work on it for so long?

Matthew Alan: I’ve always loved the idea of teaching through example, and “One Degree” contains many ideals [and] life lessons that I value, as well

DK: Why opt for the interview setting in “The Hero” and not an action story where his inner self is revealed?

MA: I just loved the idea of getting such a charismatic person to open up in this type of intimate and honest environment. And I thought Anderson Cooper was the ideal person for such an historic and sensational event. The interview goes against every aspect of Mr. Matter’s past behaviors and semi-reclusive beliefs, and yet it is his idea. I hope his strength and conflicting vulnerability, as he tries to face his past and reconciles it with his public facade, come through in the story.

Matthew Alan, a college swimming coach, wrote the self-published novella “The Hero.” as a few personal aspects from my own childhood. As I became more comfortable in my writing and gained a better perspective on “my voice,” the story kept evolving. Constantly changing and re-working the two POV’s and adding elements that continued to layer the storyline until I was satisfied with the outcome. That process, and the fact that I like to work on a project for a few months and then take a break from it to see it with fresh eyes, kept me coming back to this novel. Since I usually only have an hour or two at a time to write [and] edit, my process has been slightly slower, especially during my coaching season.

DK: Obviously, I have to ask: What inspired “The Hero”?

MA: Superheroes and individuals that manipulate incredible power have always fascinated me. “The Hero” came to me as an idea that even the most powerful person on the planet would face struggles, feel alone at times, and hide intimate and perceived embarrassing parts away from others. I also grew up

DK: What can and should we expect from you in the future?

MA: A book entitled “Cristman.” A science-fiction story – it is set in the Wicca-based belief system, and focuses on a family facing unexpected challenges in Portland, Ore. The first book in the trilogy is nearly complete.

I am also finishing a novel entitled “What We Leave Behind.” A story about love, loss and growth. It is one of the saddest and yet most uplifting books I’ve written so far.

DK: Any parting comments for fans and readers not familiar with your work?

MA: I love writing. Love being able to tell a story and try to share an idea with someone who I’ve never interacted with. Whether it’s getting a reaction from someone who agrees with every sentence, “Yes! That’s exactly how I think!” or facing a reader who just glances a few common truths that touch them, my goal is to try and present honest ideas that we can all relate to at some level. More than anything, I want a reader to finish a book of mine feeling a little more connected with the world.

That has been my goal in my coaching, my writing and my life. I hope you enjoy them!

Woman uncomfortable around boyfriend’s kids Dear Abby: I am in my late 20s and have been with my boyfriend for more than two years. We are serious, having lived together for a year, and we discuss marriage often. We make all our major decisions and purchases together and are generally very happy.

The problem arises when his children from a previous relationship are around (he shares custody with his ex). I am overwhelmed by them. They are very needy and have some minor manner problems. I am uncomfortable with all the attention they demand of me. They are literally always in my space, trying to sit on my lap or show me something, etc. It gets to the point where I just want to get away.

I am ashamed writing this, but will they grow out of this?

Dear Feeling Lost: The woman is trying to manipulate your son using emotional blackmail. He should not attempt to “rescue” her by continuing to see her.

During their next conversation, he should let her know the personal responsibility for her well-being is hers and hers alone, and he wants no part of it. If he feels she is truly a danger to herself, he should notify her family so they can get her help.

I keep being told that they feel so “safe” with me, it’s like dating their brother. Sleeping in on weekends is not a good idea for teens Dear Doctor K: My teenage son likes to sleep in on weekends, often until noon. Is it OK to let him do this?

Dear Reader: I’ve been asked this question by nearly every parent of teenagers I know. I checked with my Harvard Medical School colleague, pediatrician Dennis Rosen, who confirmed what I’ve been saying. Letting your son sleep in on weekends isn’t doing him any favors.

Teenagers should get nine hours of sleep per night. Most teens don’t, especially during the school week. Instead, they stay up late to finish school work, take part in extracurricular activities and spend time with friends. As a result, they struggle to wake up on time for school. A few days of this, and they’ve built up a significant sleep deficit.

Sleeping late on Saturday and Sunday may fill that deficit, but it creates a bigger problem: It shifts your teen’s inner clock further away from the external clock.

That “inner clock” is kept in your brain. Your brain recognizes sunrise and sends signals throughout your body that prepares it to awaken and start functioning.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff Sunset does the opposite. A few hours after sunset, your body’s inner clock starts to power down.

In teenagers, the body clock is somewhat different from what it will be when they become adults.

The clock starts to power down the body at a later hour, and it also starts to power up the body at a later hour. That’s why so many teens have trouble waking up in the morning.

So, your son’s body clock naturally causes him to fall asleep later and to get up later. When your son stays up even later than his body clock wants him to, to finish homework or to chat with his friends on Facebook, he is exaggerating the natural time shift of his body clock.

On top of that, by sleeping late on weekends, your son is exaggerating that time shift even further.

He is experiencing the equivalent of a five-hour jet lag when it’s time to get up on Monday morning. The alarm clock may be

saying 6 a.m., but his inner clock is reading 1 a.m.. This will make it much harder for your teen to wake up, and to concentrate during the first hours at school.

Over time, it can also significantly affect his mood.

As far as possible on weekends, try not to let your son sleep in more than an hour beyond his usual wake-up time. Here are some things you can do to get your teen out of bed: • Turn on all the lights in the bedroom and open the shades and curtains. Nothing says “wake up” more than bright light.

• Set an alarm clock across the room and out of reach from your son’s bed.

• Plan a morning outing with him.

In addition, don’t let him nap during the day. Napping will make it harder for him to fall asleep at night, which will make it harder to wake up the next morning.

Teen’s father has affair with younger woman Dr. Wallace: I’m 16 and an only child. My dad is a lawyer and Mom is a nurse, and I love them both very much. About six months ago, my dad started “seeing” someone who was employed in his office. She is about 20 years younger than my mom. About a month ago, Dad moved out and moved in with her. He has told my mom that he wants a divorce and that he plans to marry this woman.

I can’t believe this is really happening, and both my mom and I are totally devastated.

Please tell me what I should do to overcome my emotions. I need to be strong to help my mother, and I need to be able to concentrate on my schoolwork this fall.

Sometimes I worry that maybe I did something that caused my parents to split up! – Nameless, Dyer, Ind. Dear Nameless: When parents decide to end a marriage, it causes emotional chaos for their children. Instantly, their lives are thrown into turmoil filled with many emotions.

Dr. Bill Doherty, director of the marriage and family therapy program at the University of Minnesota, has listed several emotions teens experience when their parents go their separate ways. I’m sure you, and other teens, will gain much insight from his views on “when parents divorce:” 1. Shock: Some teens are caught off-guard by their parents’ decision to break up. But even those who kind of saw it coming may feel stunned when the announcement comes.

2. Anger and resentment: The feelings of shock are often accompanied or followed closely by intense anger and resentment. These

3. Guilt: Some teens unjustly feel like they played a part in the breakdown of their parents’ marriage, says Frances Bernfeld, a marriage and family therapist. It’s important for teens to remember that whatever problems split their parents were their own, not the teen’s.

4. Fear: “Who will I live with?” “Will I still be close to both of my parents?” “Will we have enough money for me to go to college?” These are some of the many legitimate fears teens struggle with.

5. Depression and acting out: Your feelings may take on the form of depression. You don’t feel there’s any point in continuing to participate in things you used to like to do. Grades may take a nosedive. Maybe you start breaking rules or snapping at people.

6. Disloyalty: Teens may find themselves feeling disloyal to one parent or another. You fear that it appears you favor one parent over the other.

Believe it or not, it is possible to learn from a divorce and emerge a stronger, healthier person. You are not doomed to feel unhappy and insecure forever. And like some teens fear, you are not doomed to also divorce later in life.

Keeping in touch with both parents and maintaining a positive attitude will really influence how well you navigate the divorce.
