“The whole idea is that she’s in a tough battle and bagpipes are a symbol of war,” Coakley added. “Even if it’s only momentarily, we’re hoping to get her mind off her battle.”

WESTMONT – Emily Wheeler was relaxing, watching TV and playing a board game with family when she heard the sounds early Saturday.

“At first when I heard the music ... I was so surprised,” said Wheeler, a 14-year-old Westmont High School freshman.

What she heard were bagpipes played by about 45 bagpipe players just outside her door. They were escorted by police and firefighters from Westmont, as well.

It was all for Emily, who has been locked in a battle with a rare form of brain cancer, choroid plexus carcinoma, since age 11.

Emily’s father, Steve Wheeler, explained the impromptu parade was to show support for his daughter. “[The parade] is just to bring Emily some happiness with everything that’s going on,” Steve Wheeler said. “Just to see her smile and knowing that she’s not in this alone is

DuPage County allowed to charge new stormwater fee

By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com Gov. Pat Quinn has signed a bill allowing DuPage County to charge property owners a utility fee that would be based on the amount of stormwater displaced by property.

Switching over to a feebased system – stormwater services are currently funded through property taxes – could help alleviate some of the flooding problems that have plagued the area as well as better fund the DuPage Stormwater Management department, Quinn said in a statement.

“Residents should be better protected from the flooding like we experienced this spring, and this other piece of legislation establishes a framework to improve their stormwater management,” he said.

But the plan already has received mixed reviews.

Agencies that currently are tax-exempt such as churches and schools would likely have to pay the fee, a potentially significant cost.

In Downers Grove, where village officials enacted a feebased stormwater system

Possible fee guidelines DuPage County could enact a similar stormwater fee system as the village of Downers Grove.

In Downers Grove, the fee is based on the amount of a property’s impervious area, which is any surface that does not or cannot absorb water, preventing the infiltration of stormwater into the ground, such as parking lots, roofs, driveways, patios or decks.

When it was enacted, the monthly fees for single-family properties were expected to range from $6.30 to $12.30 in Downers Grove.

Skach said in their own little way, he and Mighty Mouse have made other friends during their walks.

“It’s the same people we run into and they know the routine and her condition,” said Skach, adding that the duo heads out to Ty Warner Park around sunset.

When the two run into new faces, the reaction isn’t as subtle, but everyone thinks it’s cute, said Skach.

“They have to think I’m walking a little child, and then they’re shocked,” Skach said. “They’re in disbelief that I went to this extent.”

Skach said it’s obvious he loves his dog.

“All the 12 years of happiness she’s given me, I want to return the favor so to speak,” Skach said. “Just because she lost her vision doesn’t mean I’m going to leave her in the house. She’s no longer walking, but at least she’s riding.”

He has even padded his car so Mighty Mouse won’t bump into anything on the rides to the park.

“The back seat has sheets in there, and she has a pillow and blankets so she won’t bump anything,” Skach said.

“Basically, her comfort is first and foremost. Whatever I have to do to make sure she’s happy and comfortable I’m going to do it.”

Meat Specials HOW TO FIGHT DRY MOUTH What can I do to counter a dry mouth?

The condition known as dry mouth can be caused by a variety of factors. Prescription medication, for instance, could be a factor. Talk with your physician and dentist about the problem. Your physician may be able to change your medication, or at least the dosage. In some cases dry mouth may be caused by salivary glands that aren’t working properly.

If that’s the case, your physician or dentist might prescribe medication that helps the glands function better and keep your mouth nicely lubricated.

Your physician or dentist might decide that an artificial saliva is right for you. Though it’s not the perfect substitute for saliva, which is physically and chemically complex, artificial saliva will moisten oral tissue and help alleviate the discomfort of dry mouth. It comes as either a liquid you can squirt into the mouth or as an aerosol spray.

Other steps you can take are to keep water or sugarless drinks at hand and sip them often. Stay away from caffeine. It can dry out the mouth.

Chew sugarless gum or suck on sugarless candy as a way to stimulate saliva flow. Avoid alcohol and tobacco. They also dry out the mouth. Use a humidifier in your bedroom at night. And remember that salty or spicy food may cause discomfort in a dry mouth.

As in many cases, it’s a good idea to see your dentist if you are dealing with a dry mouth.

WESTMONT – For 10 years, Patrick Skach and Mighty Mouse spent their days walking the paths of Ty Warner Park.

“In March of 2011, she seemed to be a little bit weird one morning,” Skach said of the then 10-year-old pug. “I took her out and she just sat, wouldn’t walk around and laid out in the grass.”

Mighty Mouse was diagnosed with diabetes, which claimed her vision, as well.

The daily walks in Westmont were in jeopardy until one day he was reading Doctors Foster and Smith pet magazine and came across a coupon for a doggie stroller.

“I figured this was perfect,” Skach said.

Now 12, Mighty Mouse and her best friend are back to their strolls in Ty Warner Park.

“She loved it,” he said of the Pet Gear, Inc. stroll-

By KRISTIN PEDICINI kpedicini@shawmedia.com WESTMONT – It’s been almost two years since Musician’s Workshop, 37 W. Quincy St., opened its doors, and owner Michael Tahlier said the shop and its employees still are having fun.

Tahlier, who has played guitar for more than 20 years, said the key has been being able to share experiences and inspire the students.

One of those inspirational moments will come next week as he and the band Tim Stop open for the band Chicago.

Are you nervous? I’m more excited. I’ve been a musician for over 20 years. Performing is just part of the gig. Early on in my development I was nervous but you play and play and play and that kind of goes away...

It’s like the excitement of people who love roller coasters or sky diving. I’m more ready to go.

Stephanie McNeil had hoped that Saturday’s search of Belleau Woods Forest Preserve in Wheaton would provide clues into the disappearance of her brother, St. Charles resident John Spira, who went missing more than six years ago.

The search, led by DuPage County Sheriff’s detectives, came up empty.

“It would have been nice to find something,” McNeil said. “I had hope. But I’m

glad we were out doing this.”

Spira, 45, last was seen Feb. 23, 2007, at Universal Cable Construction near West Chicago. Spira co-owned the company.

According to the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office, Spira last was seen by his business partner, Dave Stubben, at the Universal Cable Construction business. Belleau Woods is near Stubben’s home.

“I feel he knows something,” McNeil said.

Stubben could not be reached for comment Sat-

urday. McNeil also placed “missing” fliers on cars in a parking lot near the woods.

Those searching came across a suspicious looking mound of dirt, which was then dug up by DuPage County Forest Preserve staff.

However, the mound of dirt turned out to be just that.

Anyone with information regarding the disappearance is advised to call the sheriff’s office at 630-407-2333.

William Waters III, 34, of 35 West 65th St. No. 5, Westmont, was charged with driving under the influence and possession of drug paraphernalia after a traffic stop in the 5800 block of South Cass Avenue about 1:05 a.m.

Sheriff’s department remembers cadaver dog

By MARI GRIGALIUNAS mgrigaliunas@shawmedia.com WHEATON – DuPage County Sheriff’s Office Deputy John Bertuca said he recently remembered a lot of cases he worked on with his late partner of nine years: a German Shepherd named Stitch.

“It’s pretty amazing the stuff that he could do,” Bertuca said.

Stitch, who died Aug. 2, was DuPage County’s only cadaver detecting canine. He was so good at his job, he twice found human remains in bodies of water, one of the most difficult scenarios for a patrol dog Bertuca still remembers his first call with Stitch.

In December 2007, Bertuca and Stitch got a call from the Chicago Police Department to search for a body. Bertuca said he remembers walking up to the South Side apartment under which police thought a body might be buried. After Bertuca asked that holes be

drilled in the concrete floor, he instructed everyone to leave.

Stitch followed him from hole to hole at first Stitch then picked one, sat and stared as he’d been taught.

“The hairs stood up on the back of my neck, and I got chills,” Bertuca said.

He lead Stitch around the basement and again the canine went back to the same hole. So Bertuca told the police Stitch had found a body. While jackhammers were brought in, the partners left, and Bertuca began to feel a little nervous.

“This is the first time my dog’s doing this, and we’re going to tear of up the floor in some guy’s apartment,” Bertuca said.

Woman charged after firing handgun at car SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA DOWNERS GROVE – An Indianapolis woman was arrested Aug. 12 after allegedly firing two shots from her handgun at her former boyfriend’s unoccupied vehicle in Downers Grove.

Jenniece A. Jones, 20, 532 S. Central Court, Indianapolis, was charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm at 3:25 p.m. Aug. 12 at 63rd St. and Fairview Avenue.

The alleged victim told police that Jones, a former girlfriend, had come to his residence in the 6300 block of Wells Street to collect personal property. He said she wanted to get back together, and when

Jan. 1, churches and other nonprofits have focused attention on a new municipal stormwater fee with petitions and public comments at village council meetings.

Church and nonprofit leaders there say the fees have presented their organizations with a brand new utility bill, cutting into their ability to provide services and assistance in the community.

While the village of Downers Grove did cut property taxes nearly $2 million this year to account for its separate fee, DuPage County officials have not indicated that property taxes would decrease as the result of a new fee-based system.

The county legislation has been likened to a utility bill of sorts as well and would base fees off of use, similar if not identical to the system the village of Downers Grove has adopted. Likewise, any potential future fee will involve an assessment of water displacement on a property.

To offset some of the costs, credits could be offered through permeable pavers, rain barrels, retention ponds and other measures that reduce stormwater run-off, according to DuPage County Stormwater Management Planning Committee Chairman Jim Zay. Another entity that could be substantially affected by any county stormwater fees is the DuPage County Forest Preserve, the county’s largest land owner. Representatives from the forest preserve could not be reached before press time.

Zay said in his statement that the process of forming the legislation is “not something that the county will take lightly,” but that he also views the law change as a necessary one.

“In the next few years, funding for our stormwater management program will be exhausted, so we need to work with the community to find a solution for this problem,” Zay said. “It’s the county’s responsibility to mitigate regional flooding, and this legislation provides us with a potential tool to fulfill our obligation to property owners.”

Lyman Woods offers a ‘WILD’ curriculum A new professional development program available at Lyman Woods, managed by Downers Grove Park District, is helping early childhood educators learn new ways to introduce young students to the natural world around them.

This summer, the Downers Grove Park District’s Manager of Natural Resources and Interpretive Services Shannon Forsythe and Naturalist Marge Trocki were certified as facilitators of the Growing Up WILD Professional Development Workshop. As facilitators, they can instruct local early childhood educators on how to use the new curriculum known as Growing Up WILD, a set of activities, projects and games children can play that also teaches children how to better understand and appreciate the natural world.

“The premise is that there is a ‘disconnect’ between kids and nature,” Forsythe said.

“Kids do not have the same relationship with the natural world that we previously have had.”

The curriculum of Growing Up WILD, intended for children ages 3 to 7, is found in Growing Up WILD: Exploring Nature with Young Children, an activity guidebook which is given to educators who attend the workshop. At the workshop, which is about three hours in length, teachers are instructed on how to navigate and use the guide.

“Ideally, we’d like kids to get out into a natural setting but that’s not always possible in a school yard,” Forsythe said. “... So a lot of these activities are looking for the little things in nature, [like] finding rolly-pollies or any sort of leaf. You have to use what is around you.”

DOWNERS GROVE RECOGNIZED AS TRAFFIC SAFETY LEADER The Police Department received recognition in the 2012 Illinois Traffic Challenge, as the top agency in the state for their overall approach to traffic safety. DuPage County has been named one of the healthiest counties in Illinois in a national study.

The Robert Johnson Foundation ranked DuPage sixth overall in health and first in health factors, which include components contributing to the future health of the county, such as smoking rate, obesity, access to healthcare and education.

Angela Russell, who is an associate researcher for the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute and worked on the project, said that DuPage County is not only one of the healthiest counties in the state, but in the country.

“DuPage County is doing pretty well for Illinois, and really well in a lot of different areas,” she said, pointing to the county rates of premature death, people dying in motor vehicle crashes, teen pregnancy, uninsured residents and high school graduation rates.

Overall, she said, county rates meet or exceed the state average in a large number of categories.

“This study highlights that

there are some areas that DuPage is doing really well in, and in some measures, among the best in the nation,” she said.

“But there are some real opportunities for improvement.”

DuPage, like many counties around the country, is struggling with obesity, Russell said. One in four adults are obese in the U.S., and DuPage is slightly above that rate at 27 percent. 20 percent of both county and state residents drink excessively, compared to 7 percent nationwide.

DuPage County’s morbidity rate is 25th in the state, lower than many of its other rankings.

DuPage also placed poorly in the physical environment category, which includes drinking water safety, number of fast food restaurants, access to recreation and daily fine particulate matter. The county ranked 64th out of 102 in the state.

James Gerwig, external affairs manager at the DuPage County Health Department, said he wasn’t surprised by the predominantly high rankings. In a statement, he said the department has pushed for better health in recent years.

“Their lease goes through 2020, so we’re going to have some discussions about what’s the best use of that property in the future,” County Board member Grant Eckhoff said.

“It’s a small area now for a county fair and it is sort of shoehorned in there.”

He and Stitch went on to search more scenes from DuPage County to Dixon, some of which Bertuca still isn’t allowed to talk about. The pair cleared scenes after Drew Peterson’s arrest. Bertuca said showing up to a call with every white-shirt boss just waiting for an answer never felt easy, but he trusted Stitch’s skills.

He knew if there was a body, Stitch would find it, and if there wasn’t, the canine wouldn’t waste anyone’s time or energy with a false alert.

Stitch lived to work. Shortly before he died, a vet discovered several bulging discs in his spine and a tendon issue in one of his rear legs despite Stitch’s lack of visible pain.

“He still wanted to go to work,” Bertuca said.

Stitch, named by Bertuca’s kids after the Disney character, grew up in Bertuca’s home since he was a 10-week-old puppy imported from Germany and donated to the sheriff’s department by a local breeder.

DuPage County raises their working dogs from puppies. Patrol dogs routinely are taught to detect narcotics by a process of imprinting scents. It’s taught as a game to the dogs, and once they learn how to detect one scent, others are easier to imprint. The one exception: human remains. Many dogs shy away from cadaver detection.

With the loss of Stitch, Bertuca hopes to train what he expects to be his last canine partner before he retires. Fivemonth-old Kato, named after Bertuca’s first working dog, is a female German Shorthaired Pointer hired as Stitch’s replacement. Bertuca, who’s been training dogs for nearly two decades, says a lot of handlers are men and prefer male dogs out of pure macho mentality.

“They’ll work just as hard or be just as lazy as the other gender,” Bertuca said.

The dog-training deputy said he hopes Kato is ready for police work by her first birthday, but he’s willing to give her all the training she needs. Bertuca said his job is about protecting people, and patrol dogs like Stitch – and one day Kato – serve those people, too.

DuPage County Sheriff’s deputies routinely patrol solo, but a few get to have a partner by their side every day.

“We’re lucky because we have a dog in the car,” Bertuca said.

Parking problems Regarding the parking problems in downtown La Grange it seems to have been forgotten that a lot of people park there to go to the movies. And that ties up the spaces for at least two hours. Maybe the theater owners should be responsible for the lion’s share of whatever cost is involved for improving or increasing the parking situation.

Noisy neighborhood dogs As a pet owner, I am appalled at my neighbors who allow their dogs to continually disturb the peace by their incessant barking. I am not talking about the dog that barks at an occasional animal or passerby, but the dogs who are let out in their yards most of the day and constantly bark as early as 6 in the morning and continue until late in the evening. … Yelling at your dog to ‘stop barking’ actually reinforces that behavior. Do some research and find ways to eliminate this behavior. Ultimately, if you cannot control your animals barking, keep them in the house where you will be the only one who has to listen to them and allow your neighbors some peace and quiet.

Why do we need overnight street parking in Brookfield when most every house has a garage or driveway? If the village charged a reasonable fee to park on the street overnight, say $10 or $20 per month, most people would probably put their cars away at night, while allowing an equitable option for those who don’t have a garage. This would also reduce crime because fewer cars would be on the street for thieves to break into. I’m sure the village wouldn’t be angry with the extra revenue, and with less cluttered streets, property values might actually increase.

Many of us have actually been to the village, have met with the village individuals, and pretty much I’ve been told “it is what it is.” But if they’re saying the water needs to drain into the ground, gravel driveways, decks, the water does absorb back into the ground. … When I was there … I was told, it’s just a shift coming off of our tax bill to our water bill. We all need to be aware it is not a shift because if it’s on our taxes, we can use it as a deduction on our annual income tax. If it is on our water bill, there is no tax write off or tax benefit.

DuPage County saw 15 heroin and drug-related deaths in the first two-and-ahalf weeks of July.

Among the dead is John Dudek, a 15-year-old from Bartlett who overdosed on heroin July 10.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin has called the rise in heroin use, particularly in young adults, a “public health crisis.”

But for those already suffering from addiction to heroin or other substances, there are limited resources available at the county level.

Eileen Sullivan, coordinator of the Young Adult Recovery Program at Cadence Health, said that the “epidemic is bigger than what we’re ready for.”

“There needs to be more invested in treatment, absolutely,” she said. “We can’t meet the needs right now with what we have. There are too many young people affected and too many tragedies, and it’s just gotten to a point where we need more resources and we need a team approach.”

Cadence Health, which is based out of Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield, offers a 24-hour addiction phone line, as well as detox, residential and outpatient treatment and therapy. Cadence also started Sullivan’s Program to cater to the needs of the youth that comprise the majority of heroin addicts in Chicago’s collar counties.

Dr. Jeffrey Johnson, the medical director of inpatient chemical dependency services at Central DuPage Hospital, said those dying of overdoses are not dying because of lack of immediate care. Rather, more resources focused on sustained, day-today recovery are needed.

DuPage County Health Department Communications Manager David Hass said the county has no specific program for heroin addiction treatment, but that the department’s RxBOX program has collected 14 tons of unused prescription medication since 2009.

The Health Department views its role in the fight against addiction as one of prevention, Hass said, not of treatment.

“We work with hospitals, schools, law enforcement and other community organizations to educate,” he said. “We think that is the best use of our resources, working as a coordinated effort so we know what they’re doing and they know what we’re doing and we’re united towards prevention.”

In response to interview requests, County Board Chairman Dan Cronin released a statement that said he is “very concerned about the epidemic use of heroin especially by our teens.”

Cronin also said he has met with Berlin twice to promote awareness and prevention.

DuPage County’s Psychological Services Department offers limited resources for those in need of addiction treatment. Thomas Sayers, administrator for the Community Services Department, said that those resources are

largely devoted to people referred by the criminal justice system.

“It is an epidemic, and most of the time people with heroin addiction need a higher degree of care than we can provide,” he said.

Sayers’ department does offer the Human Services Grant, which helps organizations that “serve the human services needs of DuPage County residents,” according to the county’s website, including addiction treatment.

Lisa Snipes, the development director of Serenity House, a substance abuse treatment center in Addison, said her organization was one of the “very grateful recipient(s) of county funding” through the grant.

“I believe there’s always more that can be done,” she said. “In a perfect world, there would be treatment available immediately for people who need it, but we do the best with what we can with the resources we have available to us.”

“The Health Department has undertaken several county-wide initiatives over the past five years that are having a positive impact on the health of DuPage County,” he said. “Programs such as FORWARD, Start The Heart and the county’s RxBox initiative are all programs that are factors in DuPage County receiving such a high ranking.”

Russell said that counties such as DuPage should avoid complacency when it comes to health.

“Our overall vision and goal is to create a healthier nation, county by county,” she said. “Where you live matters and we need to find opportunities for improvement.”

LT. LOUIS L. BOLDEN It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Retired police Lt. Louis L. Bolden on August 12th, 2013. He was born in Aurora, Illinois, and passed away quietly in Las Vegas, Nevada, his current home.

He was a Downers Grove Reserve Police Officer for 13 years, and then went to work for Carol Stream Park Police Department where he retired after 9 years as a Lieutenant.

He is survived by his wife, Mary J. Bolden (Sheber), his two daughters, Julie Nelson and Michelle Zerdin and his 2 grandchildren, Jonathan and Cassandra Zerdin. He also has one living sister, Stella Childers, and one living brother, Dennis Bolden.

RICHARD U JORDAN Richard U Jordan of Cookeville, Tennssee, formerly from Downers Grove and Darien, passed away peacefully at his home August 9, 2013.

He was born May 28, 1926, in Chicago, to Arnold and Mildred Jordan. He proudly served his county in WWII. He was proceeded in death by his beloved wife, Estelle (Cavanaugh).

He is survived by his 4 sons, Larry (Marilyn), Alan (Sandra), Rick, and Tyrone (Jeannie).

He was a special grandpa to Neil and Jason Jordan, Dan (Wendy) Jordan, April Jordan Naleway, Shannon Jordan and Christine Milakis, and great-grandpa of 8.

His brother, Roger Jordan and sister, Dolores Valles will truly miss him.

Richard owned and operated Automatic Engineering, a heating and air conditioning company, in Downers Grove, for many years.

He was an avid auto racing fan and did some racing himself. He was active in the Lions Club, VFW post 503, American Legion and the Shriners.

A memorial service will be held at a later date and his ashes will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery.

The family requested that any memorial be given to St. Jude Children's Hospital in his name.

DuPage County Forest Preserve board votes to cut own salaries

By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com Future commissioners and presidents of the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County may take a pay cut after the 2014 election cycle if a proposed ordinance is passed.

The forest preserve’s Board of Commissioners voted, 5-1, in favor of pursuing an ordinance that would reduce board members’ salaries from $53,500 to $50,000 during an Aug. 12 board meeting, according to Forest Preserve Spokesperson Susan Olafson. The number is based on the amount that

DuPage County Board members are paid, after the County Board elected to freeze salaries through November 2016, according to a County Board spokesperson.

Only outgoing forest preserve board President D. Dewey Pierotti Jr. abstained from the vote. Commissioner Mary Lou Wehrli voted against the ordinance.

Olafson said that Wehrli opposed the idea on principle and said that their salaries should be even lower, as the job has become more part time and less involved over the years.

The position of forest preserve board president would

receive a drastic reduction, from $112,258 to $75,000, Olafson said. County Board Chairman Dan Cronin currently is paid $121,540.

If the ordinance passes, the new pay scale will go into effect with the election of the forest preserve’s next president, as Pierotti does not plan to run again in 2014.

Olafson said a formal recommendation will be made to the Board of Commissioners at the end of the month, when it will be brought to a vote.

Commissioners of the Forest Preserve District did not respond to requests for comment.

Cyrus said Alexander has put in the necessary work to take the next step.

“He’s a great kid and he’s worked really hard on his game,” the coach said. “I’d like the team to do as well as it can throughout the season, and I hope Devin can qualify for state this year.”

However, Bryant emphasized that improvement will be a buzzword for his squad.

“We lost a few key seniors and will need to dig deep to fill their shoes,” the coach said.

“The competition within the team will be fierce for playing spots and it will be important that we improve as the season progresses. I think we have a lot of potential, but that will have to be proven out on the course.

Our team goal is to work hard and surprise a few teams along

the way.

“We are going to be a young team with a lot of potential in the next few years,” coach Marc DeLisle said. “So our main goal this year is to improve our scores to become more competitive with other area schools.”

If improvement takes place during the course of the season, which began with Monday’s dual meet against Plano, DeLisle believes contending for a conference title and sending golfers to the sectional tournament could be possibilities.

But one of Burke Sims’ fondest memories of his high school coach came after an individual honor.

“The year I won the state championship [in the 500-yard freestyle] after taking second, he knew how hard it was for me,” said Sims, who earned a degree from Stanford and is working and preparing for graduate school in New York.

“Just the look of joy on his face as he ran over and shook my hand, and then he gave me a huge hug when he gave me my medal.”

with Express Swim Club, had moved to Arizona to alleviate some of the complications of Redig’s health situation but recently moved back because their daughter, Kayla, is battling breast cancer.

To show support for the Redig family, the DGN swim and dive teams are hosting an alumni fundraising event at 5 p.m. Aug. 30. Donations will be accepted at the event to offset the medical costs incurred by Tom and Kayla.

A dual meet featuring members of the current squad is planned, as is the dedication of a Wall of Fame honoring the Trojans’ 30 National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association All-Americans. Academic All-Americans also will be honored.

A former chemistry teacher at North, Redig helped build

North’s swimming program to one of the best in the state.

“Pretty much every DGN swim kid in the last 20 years has been coached by one or both of them,” Janice Sims said of of Tom and Patty Redig.

Janice Sims is the mother of Burke Sims and current North swimmers Maddie and Gabby Sims and lead organizer for the event.

Redig’s coaching career at North was capped by Sims’ state title, but his legacy as a coach goes beyond times and state titles.

“The fastest person on the team was just as important to him as JV guys in the outside lanes working their way up,” Burke Sims said. “I have nothing but great things to say about Tom. One of the closest relationships I’ve had in my life was with him. I’m proud to have had the opportunity to swim for him.”

Coach basks in glow of second championship

By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com HINSDALE – Joel Quenneville had an extensive hockey playing career that spanned 14 NHL seasons, plus time in other professional leagues.

But in Chicago, he is known more for what he does behind the bench than on the ice.

When the Hinsdale resident coached the Blackhawks to the 2010 Stanley Cup, he helped end a 49-year championship drought, which was the longest in hockey at the time. In June, Quenneville guided the Blackhawks to another title, and they will look to repeat again next season when training camp opens Sept. 12.

SUBURBAN LIFE: Has there been any down time for you this summer?

JOEL QUENNEVILLE: It’s been a very short summer. We went back to Connecticut for a couple weeks, and it felt nice to get away.

SL: What was it like to bring the Cup to the Hinsdale Fourth of July parade?

JQ: That wasn’t my day with the Cup, but I was fortunate that the Cup was in town that day and I was able to bring it to the parade. It was a great parade. There was a nice turnout and there was a lot of enthusiasm from everyone.

JQ: It was a condensed year and we had no idea how things were going to start. I think the guys had a great mindset all year. We had a couple of goals that we set forth. We wanted to be tough to play against, we wanted to keep the puck out of our zone and we wanted to see our special teams improve. The guys’ approach was great. We got off to an amazing start, and you have to commend the guys’ approach the whole season.

SL: What moment most defines last season for you?

JQ: I think that this year was one of those years that was just so unbelievable. We played at a high rate but we didn’t have to face much adversity. Being down 3-1 to Detroit [in the playoffs], and I thought we were

We worked our way through it and got back to our winning ways.

SL: Are you going to miss playing Detroit six times a year now that they are in the other conference?

JQ: That rivalry has been tremendous. We’ve had some great games with them, two of them being Game 7 [of the play-

offs] and the regular-season game in Detroit [2-1 shootout win]. There’s passion in the rivalry between the cities and the fan bases. It’s electrifying.

Hopefully we get to play them in not too long in the playoffs [in the Stanley Cup Finals].

SL: How is the short offseason going to impact your chance to repeat as champions?

JQ: Our league is so competitive. Anybody can beat anybody else at any time. Look at Boston. They were down three goals in Game 7 [against To-

ronto] and came back to win.

Things are so close. Now the division rivalry is part of the playoffs. We’re going to continue to be the target, but I like the group we have here. Guys want to be here, and they want to win. That’s their competitive juices. They always have something to prove.

SL: How did the 2010 title and 2013 title compare?

JQ: They were different, but they were both nice. They were two different teams. The core was in place, but at the same time we had so many guys on the team who were new to winning the Cup, so it was to have them experience that. The depth of the team might have been higher in 2010, but this group had more contributions across the board and more balance.

SL: How will the Olympic break factor into this season?

JQ: We’ll probably look at it a lot like last season when rest was so important and practice time was down a little bit. We had to rest guys and manage minutes to make sure they were ready to play down the stretch. For guys that compete in the Olympics, I think that’s going to be the reality again.

We’ll see how it plays out, but after the Olympics we might have to manage minutes even more for the guys that play.

Satisfying salad kicked up with meat ‘n’ potatoes

While there are many components, this Super Summer Supper Salad could not be easier.

This is a great base recipe to add to or subtract from (if you subtract don’t tell me, I’ll be crushed). What’s also nice about this is every part of the recipe can be done up to two days ahead of time and then it becomes merely a job of assembling. What could be better than that on a hot summer day?

This salad serves six comfortably and up to 12 if you’d prefer to serve it as a side dish. Paired with a loaf of homemade French bread and finished with a rich seasonal blueberry crumb cake, it’s a meal that will leave your family and friends not only satisfied, but impressed!

Super Summer Salad

n 4 cups mesclun spring mix n 1 cup fresh spinach leaves n 3 boneless/skinless chicken

breasts, marinated (see marinade recipe below) n 1/2 cup snow peas, julienned n 1 red pepper, diced n 1 green pepper, diced n 10 baby Yukon gold potatoes n 4 hardboiled eggs n 2 pounds cooked, peeled and deveined shrimp n 1/2 cup crumbled bleu cheese n 2 cups of prepared cheesestuffed tortellini, cooked and chilled thoroughly

Homemade French Bread. n 1/2 cup slivered peeled carrots n 1/2 pound fresh green beans Broil or grill marinated chicken.

Let cool at room temperature, then wrap and chill.

Boil the baby potatoes for approximately 20 minutes until the skins just begin to crack. Allow these to cool at room temperature, wrap and chill.

Place 4 cold eggs into a large pan of cold water. Bring this to a boil, cover and take off the heat. After 10 minutes, drain the eggs and place them in cold water for approximately 5 minutes. Crack and peel the eggs under cold running water. Chill these as well.

Boil the tortellini according to the directions on the package. Drain, cool and chill.

Blanch green beans in boiling water for 15 seconds, drain and place in a bowl of ice water. Drain, dry and chill.

Prior to assembling the salad, slice the cooled cooked chicken into thin strips. Cut the baby potatoes into halves and quarter the hardboiled eggs. Toss your greens and spinach together in a large bowl along with your peppers, carrots, and sugar snap peas. Add chilled baby potatoes, chicken and shrimp. Place quartered hard boiled eggs around the edges of the salad. Next, mound chilled tortellini in the center of the salad and

top with crumbled bleu cheese.

Christopher’s Foolproof Chicken Marinade: Combine the zest and juice of two large lemons, 1 tablespoon of Dijon mustard, 2 tablespoons freshly cracked black pepper and 1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil. Whisk until the mixture has emulsified. Pour this over the chicken and let marinade at least an hour, overnight is best.

Berry Crumb Cake With summer in full bloom it’s time to enjoy the fruits of the season. A favorite around my house is blueberries. This blueberry crumb cake is absolutely delectable with its moist, rich cake, sweet brown sugar topping and fresh seasonal fruit. It also does “double duty,” which is one of my favorite types of recipes. It’s won-

For the crumb cake: n 1 1/2 cups flour n 1/2 cup sugar n 1 1/2 t baking powder n 1/2 t kosher salt n 1 large egg n 1/2 cup plus 2 T milk n 2 T vegetable oil n 2 t vanilla extract For the topping: n 2 1/2 cups flour n 1 cup firmly packed light brown sugar n 1 1/2 t cinnamon n 2 sticks unsalted butter, melted and cooled slightly Make the crumb cake: In a large mixing bowl combine the flour, sugar, baking power and kosher salt. In another bowl, whisk together the egg, milk, vegetable oil and vanilla. Combine with the dry ingredients and mix with a wooden spoon until well incorporated. Fold in a half pint of fresh blueberries and spread batter into a greased quarter-sized baking sheet. Preheat your oven to 325 F. Make the topping: Combine flour, butter, light brown sugar and cinnamon. Mix this with a wooden spoon until incorporated and with clean hands, form into crumbles.

Top the prepared batter with the topping, making sure to cover the entire cake. Bake for 20 minutes and cool on wire rack for at least 15 minutes. Cut into large pieces and enjoy!

Weiss, also coauthor of the family cookbook “No Whine with Dinner,” offers tips for putting a nutritious spin on kids’ lunchtime favorites while keeping them “trade-proof”: Beyond white or wheat: With pitas, naan, flatbreads, tortillas and more, any sandwich can have a global flair. Choose whole-grain options made with ingredients like 100-percent whole wheat and rolled oats.

Whole grains provide more fiber as well as nutrients like B vitamins and magnesium, important for strong bones.

The deli difference: Not all lunchmeat is created equal. Look for natural and organic brands made with a short, “clean” list of ingredients and no antibiotics or artificial colors, flavors or additives.

Nutty for butters: Replace peanut butter with other butters such as almond, sunflower or cashew. For a fun twist, spread your child’s favorite nut butter and jelly on lavash bread, roll up and then slice into “sushi” rolls.

Fruit inside, not on the side: Who says peanut butter sandwiches have to have jelly? Why not add thinly sliced bananas, strawberries or even kiwi fruit? Making a PB&J into a PB&F cuts the added sugar and boosts the flavor and nutrients. Ham & cheese sammies also pair nicely with fruit, especially sliced, crisp apples.

Take the chip off the shoulder: Let kids feel like mom caved on the chips by making a savory dip with yogurt or hummus and adding whole wheat pita chips and some veggies on the side. It’s like party food for lunch.
