Horses in the spotlight at annual St. Charles festival

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Local artist Peggy Sue Seehafer fell in love with horses at a young age. And she still has that love for horses today.

“When there’s a little girl in you that loves horses, it doesn’t go away,” Seehafer said Sunday, while putting the final brush strokes on her painting of carousel horses.

Seehafer was part of a gallery show presented by the St. Charles Arts Council at the Festival of the Horse and Drum at the Kane County Fairgrounds. The festival featured everything from an equine art show to an Ameri-

can Indian pow wow.

Seehafer and her husband, Richard, restore carousel animals out of their home near St. Charles. She also owns horses.

Batavia photographer Elsie McConnell shares Seehafer’s love for horses. Her work was also on display at the gallery show.

“Horses are my favorite subject to photograph,” McConnell said. “The eyes are the window to the soul, so I try to capture that. I try to capture the aura of a horse.”

The 62-year-old McConnell has been riding horses since she was 7 years old and has won her share of ribbons.

“It’s a bond when you can train an animal,” McConnell

said.

And as those attending Elizabeth Graves’ workshop found out, there’s a certain way to train horses.

“A horse learns one experience at a time and you want those experiences to be as good as possible,” said Graves, who owns Shades Of Oak Ranch LLC in Spring Valley, Minn. “Great training is like watching paint dry. It’s not exciting.”

Jackie Oh, 12, of St. Charles, watched the Friesian horse demonstration with fascination.

“The horses were so pretty,” she said. “I love horses.

I have been riding for four years.”

ST. CHARLES – In announcing Sunday that he will once again run for the 14th Congressional District seat held by U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Winfield, Gurnee Democrat Dennis Anderson said Congress remains broken.

“As was the case two years ago, we have a Congress that doesn’t work,” Anderson said during his remarks at the Filling Station Pub and Grill in downtown St. Charles.

“The House, in particular, is broken. Our opponents are people who, if faced with only two choices in reducing the deficit, either to ask a little more of those who have much or to take from those who have little, they will choose the latter.”

Anderson made his announcement that he will seek the Democratic nomination in 2014 in conjunction with a fundraising picnic by the Kane County Democrats organization.

The 14th district includes seven suburban counties: Kane, DuPage, DeKalb, Will, McHenry, Lake and Kendall.

Anderson lost to Hultgren last November by 53,252 votes. Hultgren was first elected to Congress in 2011, and had previously been an Illinois senator and representative.

“As was the case two years ago, we have a Congress that doesn’t work. The House, in particular, is broken.”

Dennis Anderson Democratic challenger for the 14th Congressional District seat held by Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Winfield Anderson, who had never sought public office prior to his run in 2012, said Congress needs to do more to improve the economy.

Anderson said he supports President Barack Obama’s jobs plan, which includes much needed infrastructure improvements.

“It will meet immediate needs and will create jobs,” Anderson said.

Kane County Democrats Chairman Mark Guethle said Anderson represents issues that he believes in, such as job creation.

“I think that people are upset with Washington now and with the lack of progress,” Guethle said.

Hultgren has not formally announced whether he will seek a third term.

New search reveals little new information on missing man

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com Stephanie McNeil had hoped that Saturday’s search of Belleau Woods Forest Preserve in Wheaton would provide some clues into the disappearance of her brother, St. Charles resident John Spira, who went missing more than six years ago.

The search came up empty.

“It would have been nice to find something,” McNeil said.

“I had hope. But I’m glad we were out doing this.”

Spira, 45, was seen last Feb. 23, 2007, at Universal Cable Construction near West Chicago. Spira co-owned the company. The case has gathered worldwide attention. Spira’s disappearance was featured in 2010 as part of an Investigation Discovery cable show,

“Disappeared.”

According to the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office, Spira was last seen by his business partner, Dave Stubben, at the Universal Cable Construction business. Belleau Woods is located near Stubben’s home.

“I feel he knows something,” McNeil said.

Stubben could not be reached for comment Saturday. McNeil also placed

“missing” fliers on cars in a parking lot near the woods.

Among those helping with the search Saturday was Susan Olsen, whose son, Bradley Olsen, 26, of Maple Park, was last seen about 2 a.m. Jan. 20, 2007, at Bar One in DeKalb.

DeKalb police have said he arrived at the bar with some friends late Jan. 19.

pearance of Spira.

“I’ve tried to make it to all of John’s searches,” she said.

“You never know what you will find on a search – a piece of clothing, a shoe, a cellphone. Those all are things you know to look for.”

Olsen said the DeKalb Police Department is currently investigating some “credible leads” into the disappearance of her son.

“I love it,” Jane Sandberg said.

The Sandbergs were excited about part of San’s victory prize – an opportunity to open for the popular local band Back Country Roads. San said she is a big fan of country music.

The junior Elburn Idol competition was won by Maggie Madziarczyk, a sixth-grader at Kaneland Harter Middle School.

St. Peter volunteers gear up for Barn Sale

eschelkopf@shawmedia.com GENEVA – As Mike Mayorga on Saturday sorted through an array of items for the upcoming St. Peter Barn Sale, he was glad he had an army of volunteers helping him.

“Making sure we have enough volunteers is our biggest challege,” Mayorga said.

Mayorga, 19, and his siblings, Matthew Mayorga, 19, and Mandy Mayorga, 24, all of Geneva, are the co-chairs of this year’s St. Peter Barn Sale, which will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 14 and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 15 at the Kane County Fairgrounds at Route 38 and Randall Road in St. Charles.

The barn sale is an annual fundraiser for St. Peter Church in Geneva and has been hosted by different Catholic parishes

over the years. The sale is a mammoth event and features thousands of donated items, including antiques, books and music, china, glassware, toys and furniture.

The three of them have grown up with the sale because their parents, Miguel and Luanne Mayorga, are longtime volunteers and past co-chairs of

St. Peter Barn Sale. It is known for its bargains and is meant to be an outreach to those families with tight budgets.

“One year I was working it, I met a family that was able to get enough for a baby nursery,” Mandy Mayorga said. “We also get a lot of college kids who are moving out on their own for the first time.”

It’s a popular fundraiser, Lund said, and the girls stay busy climbing back from the tank after someone hits a target. And even if they don’t, she said, they’re sometimes invited to press the target to dunk the cheerleader. That happened after Lund’s shift, when Elburn brothers Austin and James Hall, ages 7 and 9 respectively, weren’t able to sink the girls despite hitting the targets.

Lund, who also was shivering, said she would be ready to go back in after sitting out for a half-hour. The event is fun, she said, but even on a warm summer day, with temperatures in the 80s, it can be a chilly experience.

“Yeah, I’m cold,” she said.

“The water is freezing.”

Yanni and Mileto couldn’t get enough of the festival after the race, and they weren’t sure where they would go after the tractor pull. They both agreed it was an impressive scene.

“It makes my Toyota Tacoma look like a girlie truck,” Yanni said, commenting on how large the vehicles involved in the tractor pull were.

ELBURN – Chris Mileto watched Saturday as the tractor pull portion of Elburn Days took place, marveling at his first-ever glimpse of such an event.

Mileto, a Chicago resident, was in Elburn to run in the Elburn Days 5K on Saturday morning, a race he won. His girlfriend, St. Charles resident Samantha Yanni, also ran in the race, and they decided to stay for the all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast. By the afternoon, they found themselves still enjoying the festival.

“I’m from Chicago. We don’t do this,” Mileto said, gesturing at the tractor pull.

“This is awesome.”

Elburn Days got underway with a big crowd at Friday night’s parade on Route 47 in downtown Elburn. On Saturday, more crowds showed up as festival activities continued. Also, the junior and teen champions were crowned at the Elburn Idol competition.

The event took place through Sunday at Lions Park, 500 Filmore St., Elburn.

Geneva’s San Sandberg performed the Carrie Underwood hit “Blown Away” to win the

finished second. Eva Ottoson finished third.

Madziarczyk said it was the first time she had won a singing competition. She performed “Caught in the Storm.”

She is a Sugar Grove resident.

Her mother, Jennifer, said Maggie has been involved in 19 theater productions, including “Scrooge, the Musical,” at the Steel Beam Theatre and “It’s a Wonderful Life” at the Fox Valley Repertory. She took second place in the Kane County Fair’s Got Talent contest.

Jennifer Madziarczyk said the family is thrilled with Maggie’s success.

“It’s a musical, creative family, but none of us can sing,” she said, adding there are several musicians, and, of course, Maggie has proven she can sing.

Elsewhere at the fair, Kaneland High School cheerleaders were sitting in a dunk tank, raising funds for the group as customers paid for the opportunity to hit a target and drop the girls into a tank of water.

Two girls sat at a time.

Sinclair Cress, a freshman, was shivering under a towel after a half-hour session in which she said she was dunked as many as 20 times.

Cougars claim wild one; Almora’s season could be over

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Cougars manager Mark Johnson is five years removed from his days as a major league catcher, but he still distinctly recalls his unease every time he extended his arm to call for an intentional walk.

“Every time I put my hand out and went for that intentional walk, I was like ‘Oh, [crud], I hope he throws it to me,” Johnson said.

“I was always prepared to jump, to dive, to do whatever. Because you never know – pitchers are not used to throwing soft.”

Clinton reliever Mark Bordonaro underscored that point much to the Cougars’ liking on Saturday night, throwing a wild pitch high and wide for ball four of an intentional walk of Rock Shoulders that allowed Gioskar Amaya to scamper home from third base with what turned out to be the winning run in the Cougars’ 7-6 victory.

The wild pitch occurred with two outs and Amaya on third in the bottom of the eighth, and the score tied at 6.

It was perhaps a fitting turning point for a zany night, in which the Cougars showed plenty of fight in front of 11,139 fans at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark. That fight started with their manager.

Johnson was ejected at the end of the fifth inning after a ferocious protest of an apparently blown at home plate.

A frame-by-frame photo sequence of the play to end the fifth appeared to show that the Cougars’ Jeimer Candelario beat a tag attempt from LumberKings catcher Marcus Littlewood, but home plate umpire Clinton Vondrak called Candelario out.

Candelario leapt into the air in disbelief, while Johnson charged down the third base line to vigorously dispute the call. Not long after, he was ejected, prompting Johnson to fling his helmet onto the field in disgust. The call temporarily kept the score knotted at 3.

“That’s all I was watching, was his hand and the plate,” Johnson said. “I thought I had a great vantage point. I thought I saw him touch the plate, and it was an outstanding slide by Candy.”

“We just disagreed on it,” Johnson said. “[Stuff] happens.”

Johnson ended up watching heck of a comeback from upstairs, as the Cougars scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the score at 6.

Then, in the bottom of the eighth, Amaya led off with a double to left and was bunted to third by center fielder Oliver Zapata.

Candelario then popped out on the infield for the second out before Clinton’s attempt to intentionally walk Shoulders (2 for 3, RBI) backfired.

The drama wasn’t over.

The LumberKings (60-63, 27-27) squandered a leadoff double in the top of the ninth off Cougars reliever Michael Hamann, who then induced consecutive line-outs to right field before making a slick stab of Martin Peguero’s comeback grounder to close the game.

Hamann (2-2) said Cougars pitching coach Ron Villone works on fielding hard come-backers with the pitchers.

“We just use kind of a sponge ball, and honestly he just rears back and hits them as hard as he can, so we actually practice something like that from time to time,” Hamann said.

Catcher Carlos Escobar put the Cougars (50-69, 20-33 second half) on top with a two-run double in the bottom of the first, and the Cougars led 3-0 before allowing Clinton to catch up in the top of the fifth.

In addition to Shoulders, Giuseppe Papaccio and Zapata had two hits apiece for the Cougars in the first game of a seven-game homestand.

Cougars starting pitcher Michael Heesch, of Crystal Lake, pitched six innings of three-run ball, allowing six hits with three walks and a strikeout.

Note: Johnson said there still is no timetable for star center fielder Albert Almora to receive an MRI needed to assess his groin injury, as well as “everything following it.”

With little more than two weeks left in the season, that means it’s possible Almora’s days playing for the Cougars could be over.

“You’ve got to look at the big picture with him, and there are 17 days left,” Johnson said. “It’s something you want to be careful with. It’s not like a minor injury. It’s not a major injury by any means, but it’s something you’ve got to really look out for him and his best interests.

“Whatever it is has got to calm down, and when it calms down we’ll take another picture and see what’s doing.”

Almora’s injury has been described as a bruised bone in his groin. The Cubs’ top draft pick from 2012 has been on the disabled list since Aug. 6. He is batting .329 with 17 doubles in 61 games after joining the team in May in the aftermath of breaking a bone in his hand in March.

Nine weeks, nine questions

We’re less than two weeks from Opening Night of football around the Tri-Cities, and Coach Sly has a question (and an answer, naturally) for each week of the regular season.

In the last year before the SCC goes bye bye in football, look for ACC to take another step forward, Aurora Christian to take a step back (but still be plenty dangerous) and Marmion and St. Francis to return to their playoff ways after down 2012 seasons.

1. Who is the best team in the area?

Batavia. Or is it Kaneland?

It’d be easier to answer that one if the teams were playing each other as was once rumored, but as it stands, both teams again look like they’ll be at the top of the heap around the Tri-Cities.

2. How about the St. Charles teams?

Both North and East look like they could very well be playoff-caliber, but a lot will hinge on how they fare in non-conference play. North’s lineplay and East’s skill position guys should be fun to watch.

3. Uh, what about Geneva?

Sly’s noticed a discernible lack of buzz about the oncemighty Vikings. Geneva has been knocked off its conference perch by Batavia the past couple years, and the Bulldogs don’t appear to want to let the Vikings back up.

Combine that with a brutal early schedule, and Geneva is very much laying low for now.

Perhaps the Vikes will channel an Us Against The World mentality constructively and surprise some people.

4. How are the QB battles shaking out?

What QB battles? This is the least dramatic preseason in recent memory when it comes to signal-callers, with pretty much every team in the area content with an

Too close to call, but St. Francis’ James Butler has the best chance to go D-I, FWIW. Batavia’s Scaccia and Kaneland’s Balluff are also going to run wild.

7. Which team has the best defense?

Sly’ll give that one to Batavia (strong line, a stud MLB and very good athletes in the secondary), but beware the North Stars’ D as well.

8. Biggest shoes to fill?

Here are two, one for each foot: Joe Hoscheit’s in the middle of the Fighting Saints’ defense (especially without a dominant line, linebacker play is critical for East) and Bobby Hess’ in the Geneva backfield (could this year be the end of Geneva’s annual shock-andawe at running back?)

9. Best week of the season?

That’s an easy one: Week 3 – Batavia/Geneva and St. Charles East/St. Charles North.

Then again, Week 1 is always special, and Kaneland-Morris has turned into a memorable way to bring down the curtain on the regular season.

Bottom line, the season’s going to be a blast, like always.

BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush an quarterback in Trent Edwards, it became difficult to believe the Bears won’t carry three into the regular season.

More NFL clubs than not carry three and even before Blanchard’s injury, many analysts and insiders wondered whether the Bears could afford to go to camp without a better backup plan for Jay Cutler than Josh McCown.

We do not know yet how long the Bears expect Blanchard to be out, but it seems unlikely they’d carry him on the final 53-man roster. They can place him on injured reserve and protect their rights to him for another season, or they could work out an injury settlement with him and release him. They might even make an injury settlement and then when he is ready to play again re-sign him to the practice squad.

Neither Palmer nor Edwards is eligible for the practice squad. Cutler and McCown are likely to play almost all of the important third exhibition game, and McCown should see some action in the final exhibition. The Bears were fine with three quarterbacks before the Blanchard injury, so they clearly don’t need four now to get through the preseason.

What have we seen of McCown so far? He was the least effective of the three quarterbacks in the preseason

opener in Carolina, and the offense was nonexistent with him at quarterback against the Chargers.

“Once Matt (Blanchard) went down, we really limited what we were going to do offensively,” coach Marc Trestman said. “We were going to run the football, try to use as much clock as we could, try to keep Josh (McCown) as safe as we could through the second half.”

That’s true, but before the Blanchard injury McCown was 2 of 5 for 12 yards. In two games he is 8 of 16 for 55 yards, no TDs, no interceptions and a sack. The Bears worked out Palmer and Edwards, as well as JaMarcus Russell in the spring before electing to go to camp with Cutler, McCown and Blanchard.

Could it be the Bears have decided to take advantage of the Blanchard injury by bolstering themselves behind Cutler? It’s difficult to believe McCown won’t be No. 2 when the Bengals come to town for the regular-season opener Sept. 8.

But it’s more than reasonable to assume either Palmer or Edwards will be No. 3, as it seems unlikely both came to town for two weeks of per diem and a chance to practice and put a few second-half exhibition snaps on tape. Do you remember how McCown got his job? Caleb Hanie does.

When Matt Blanchard fractured a knuckle on his non-throwing hand in the Bears’ exhibition game against the Chargers on Thursday, it was clear the Bears would have to add another quarterback to complete the preseason.

The question was whether they would bring in another young developmental player to take third team snaps and possibly earn himself a spot on the practice squad or go for a veteran who might pick things up more quickly and hope to strike lightning in a bottle and force the Bears to carry a third QB. That assumes of course the Bears weren’t already planning on carrying three QBs. When they quickly moved to sign veteran Jordan Palmer it was fair to assume they wanted someone with the experience to grasp at least parts of their offense more quickly and give all of the other players on offense battling for roster spots the best chance to show what they could do.

While it seemed unlikely Palmer would come to Chicago without some assurance he’d be given a reasonable chance to make the club – NFL players receive a small per diem during training camp and only begin to earn their salary if they make the regular-season roster – it is possible Palmer was happy for the chance to get some more tape and let the other 31 clubs know he’s ready and available, as well.

But when the Bears moved Sunday to add a fourth veter-

Dear Abby: My husband lost his job more than a year ago because his plant closed. He was almost retirement age, so he took an early retirement. The problem is he isn’t adjusting well to the change.

He has his hobbies, but he seems to have lost interest in them. He is angry a lot of the time and lost at other times. I understand it’s a huge adjustment for him, but I’m concerned that it has been going on too long.

I have tried to get him interested in things, but he doesn’t take my suggestions well anymore.

He thinks I want him out of my hair, but it’s not true.

I want him to be happy.

I know he’s depressed but he denies it. When other people ask how he likes retirement, he says he loves it. I think he feels silly for not enjoying it.

He doesn’t want to spend money for counseling, even though he knows he can get the fee adjusted according to our income.

I’m at a loss about what to do to help him.

He should take the first trick with dummy’s ace, draw trumps and run the club jack. Yes, the finesse loses, but he has those 10 tricks.
