Even though his new position is one that requires more time at the police station and less time patrolling the streets, law enforcement is still Newton’s true calling.

“The job is so rewarding,” he said. “[Knowing] that while you’re driving around on the midnight shift, nothing happens because you’re driving around on the midnight shift.”

Aside from being colleagues who have followed very similar career paths over the years, Newton said he and Wirsing are good friends.

“I think it’s really cool,” he said. “It’s just a good thing for the department.”

LOMBARD – Roy Newton is getting used to sitting behind a desk at work each day, he’s getting used to working five days a week and having weekends off, and he’s getting used to sleeping at night rather than patrolling the streets of Lombard.

On July 29, Newton, a 27year veteran, began his new position as Deputy Chief of Administration for the Lombard Police Department and he’s acclimating to the changes that all police personnel face when they make the shift from patrolling the streets to helping oversee the department.

“I’ve never worked Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.,” he said. “My whole adult life has been shift work.”

Newton, 47, has spent his entire career in law enforcement with the Lombard Police Department. He joined the force as a community service officer as a 20-year-old in 1986, but he was even active with the department in high school as a member of the Police Explorers, a program that provided relevant experience for local teens interested in law enforcement.

From a very young age, Newton said he wanted to be a police officer.

“I was the typical kid in grammar school,” he said.

“When others said, ‘What do you want to be when you grow up?’ I always said a police officer.”

No one in his family served in law enforcement, this was something he independently decided to pursue.

LOMBARD – From now until Sept. 3, residents, business owners and community members can show their support for the Lilac Village by voting online to help Lombard win a top spot in Rand McNally’s Best of the Road competition.

This competition began in 2011 and ranks America’s small towns in the categories of Most Beautiful, Most Fun, Most Patriotic, Friendliest, Best Food and Best for Geocatching. The winners of this competition will be featured in the 2015 Rand McNally’s Road Atlas and free online app promoting the towns.

As of Aug. 9, Lombard was ranked in fourth palace overall in the “Most Fun” category with more than 230 votes.

The top five finalists from each category will be announced, and then those towns will be required to

The real tragedy behind vision-stealing glaucoma is that most people afflicted with this eye disease do not even realize they have it. By SARAH SMALL LOMBARD – At Thursday night’s Board of Trustees meeting, Lombard trustees were expected to approve a contract with a nationwide employment search company to find a new village manager, after current village manager Dave Hulseberg’s pending retirement.

An item on the agenda asked trustees to approve a contract with Voorhees Associates LLC of Deerfield with $16,400 to conduct the search.

According to board documents, Voorhees Associates will conduct interviews with the Village President Keith Giagnorio, the Board of Trustees and village staff to decide on qualifications and professional skills for village manager candidates.

Cassidy embraces new lifestyle after deadly fire

By SARAH SMALL ssmall@shawmedia.com LOMBARD – This time last August, Jason Cassidy was lying in a hospital bed at Loyola University Medical Center’s Burn Center being treated for smoke inhalation and third-degree burns across almost half of his body.

A year later, 26-year-old Cassidy lounges on his living room couch on a Tuesday after work. His body is free of bandages, but scars are visible on his legs and arms from the flames of a house fire that claimed the life of Paula Morgan on the eve of her 25th birthday last July.

Cassidy is finished with doctor visits now, he doesn’t go for physical therapy anymore and he’s back to working full time at a Lombard-based landscaping company. He also bears the mark of someone who’s done quite a bit of growing up in the past year.

“The whole perspective I had on life was altered,” he said. “A year later, you can’t

let anything slow you down.”

Late last fall, after Cassidy was able to take care of himself again, he moved back into the house in Villa Park that he rented with friends. He soon realized, though, that he wasn’t interested in the party atmosphere that still filled the house, and in April he moved into an apartment in Lombard with his dad’s sister.

It’s quieter here, he said, and he likes it that way.

When he moved out of his dad’s house, where he’d recovered, Bob Cassidy encouraged his son to embrace life.

“I said, ‘You have a life to live, go out and live it,’” Bob Cassidy said. “He’s really taken that to heart and that’s what he’s doing. I’m very happy with how it’s all gone and how he’s come out of this.”

July 22 marked the oneyear anniversary of the fire.

Cassidy said he went to work and treated it as a normal day.

He considered writing something on Facebook to mark the date, but instead posted a comment on a commemorative vid-

eo that one of Morgan’s friends posted.

His father also treated the day as any other, but took some time to reflect.

“There was a moment in time when I did sit back,” Bob Cassidy said. “I just looked at it and thanked God that I was strong enough to help him get through it and that he was strong enough to get through it.

Jason Cassidy said his life is ordinary again, and he tries to keep it that way. There are, however, the obvious hangups.

There are the ongoing court proceedings for Todd Mandoline, the Villa Park man who allegedly started the house fire and was charged with first-degree murder, aggravated arson and other crimes on a ninecount indictment. On July 21, 2012, Paula Morgan of Lombard hosted a party with friends to celebrate her birthday. According to the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office, Todd Mandoline of Villa Park, a former boyfriend, allegedly placed paper in Morgan’s car’s gas tank before lighting it on fire and leaving the area. Morgan later died of smoke inhalation. Mandoline was arrested by the Lombard Police Department and charged with four counts of first-degree murder, three counts of aggravated arson, residential arson and criminal damage to property. His next court date is Aug. 28.

A year after the fire, Cassidy’s doing things that 26-year-olds do. He’s planning a road trip to Las Vegas with his friends, he’s planning another trip to Florida with

his girlfriend and he’s gone out on his dad’s boat several times this summer.

He said he’s happier now than he was before the fire, and his dad is proud of how his son has progressed.

“He seems like he’s pretty well back on his feet,” Bob

‘A lot of sadness’ Aside from the Cassidys and the Morgans, there’s another family that has spent the past year remembering the fire on Ahrens Avenue.

It’s the Lombard Fire Department, and specifically the department’s Red Shift that responded to the fire.

Lieutenant Michael Heimbecker has been with the department for 10 years. He was leading the crew that went into the house to rescue Cassidy and that later found Morgan.

“For me, there’s a lot of

sadness,” he said. “We’re responding to something, doing everything we can, and later we find out it was set intentionally.”

Firefighters see a lot of calls during the course of a year, some with good outcomes and some with bad outcomes, Heimbecker said. A year later, the fire that killed Morgan and changed Cassidy’s life is one he reflects on with sadness.

“For me, a year later it was still on my mind,” he said.

“I often think about Paula’s son Nicholas and how he’s doing. It’s a lot of different emotions. Happy that Jason’s doing well, and I think about Nicholas and Paula’s family.”

“My dad keeps me informed,” he said. “The next time I go to a court date for him is when he gets sentenced.”

At the time of the fire, Jason Cassidy was employed full time but without health insurance to cover the expenses for nearly seven weeks in the hospital, followed by months of medications, therapies and doctor visits. Various fundraisers were held but they couldn’t come close to denting the final medical bill that topped $300,000, he said.

So, Cassidy’s in the process of filing bankruptcy, something

If you are included in the Class and timely submit a valid Claim Form and all required documentation, you may request reimbursement for the damages described above. VILLA PARK – The teaching of civics, or the study of rights and duties of citizens, may soon be revitalized in Illinois classrooms, thanks to a bill signed into law by Gov. Pat Quinn last week.

State Rep. Deb Conroy, D-Villa Park, sponsored House Bill 2428, which will create a voluntary, bipartisan task force to review the current statewide civics curriculum and make recommendations to reinstall civics in public schools.

“We really want our youth to understand what

it means to be a responsible part of the community,” Conroy said. “We’re really getting away from that and we can see the effects.”

Conroy said she first learned about the absence of civics education in the classroom by being involved in the schools of her four children, who range in age from 16 to 27. She said she was shocked as was a committee of state senators before whom she testified earlier this year.

In the next few weeks, a task force – comprised of legislators from both parties along with education experts – will be formed to review how civics is cur-

York Township Senior Center is a ‘cool’ spot As the summer wanes and Labor Day approaches, please remember that the York Township Senior Center at 1502 South Meyers Road is an official cooling center for senior citizens.

Seniors who need relief from the heat can stay in our air conditioned auditorium, open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., COMMUNITY Monday through Friday. If VOICE there is an event or class John going on in the auditorium, please be discreet. Either Valle join in or find a comfy chair in the hallway until the event is over.

Seniors should take extra precautions during heat waves and are advised to stay in air conditioned spaces at least several hours during the daytime. On extra hot days, anyone without air conditioning should take refuge with family or friends whose homes are cooled. Other alternatives are public buildings such as libraries, park districts and shopping malls.

And even if you don’t need relief from the summer weather, York Township Senior Center is a good place to be.

Depending on the day and time, you may play bridge or pinochle or attend an art class or sit in with a woodcarving class. We also have activities that provide a little more exercise such as Yoga, Tai Chi, Line Dancing and Yuan Ji, a combination of Tai Chi and dance.

For those of you who enjoy being pampered, a barber, beautician and occasional foot care clinics are available by appointment.

We have a free movie on the big screen in our auditorium every Tuesday afternoon.

Throughout the year, we schedule many one-day trips, inhouse parties and entertainment as well as many educational seminars. We also offer referral services to seniors who need legal aid or chores done around their house.

Our capable Senior Center staff also can help you apply for LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program), Circuit Breaker Assistance and SHIP (Senior Health Insurance Program).

We continuously are looking for new programs and services to offer to our seniors. For information or if you have any suggestions about new activities, seminars or classes you want to see us offer, call York Township Senior Center at 630-620-2424.

On the recent bicycle race in Elmhurst: Possibly I missed something, and was not aware, but it seemed like the timeframe for that during the day on a weekday could be better planned. I think I made about three different attempts to try to get to the library and streets were shut down. Train worries Some senior residents of Downers Grove are old enough to recall the train derailment that totaled the Main Street station. Fortunately, it didn’t involve the long chains of tank cars full of flammable materials that are common today.

There must be some regulation that is being ignored. God forbid that a derailment of a string of dozens of tankers would happen, spreading an inferno for blocks of homes north and south of the tracks.

Why can’t the strings of tank cars be interrupted with strings of non-flammable box cars, or other cargo cars? At least then, a partial derailment might involve fewer flammable cars.

• Gomez Pascual, 49, 1642 Canterbury Court, West Chicago, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol at 1:03 a.m. Aug. 3 in the 600 block of West St. Charles Road.

Indecent exposure • A woman told police that a male, Hispanic subject called her toward his car, asking for directions at 9:08 a.m. Aug. 6 at Madison and Grace streets. When

she got closer, the man exposed himself and fled the area.

Disorderly conduct • Joseph Messina, 23, 428 W. Madison St., Lombard, was charged with

disorderly conduct at 4:22 a.m. Aug. 8 at his home after he told police there was a man in his backyard with a gun. When officers arrived, the determined that there never had been a subject with a gun.

Anton F. “Tony” Debevetz, age 85, of Duxbury, Massachusetts, formerly of Sheboygan, Wisconsin, and Elmhurst, Illinois. Died on August 11, 2013, in Plymouth, Massachusetts.

He is the beloved husband of 60 years to Camille (Clayton) Debevetz. Born in Sheboygan, Wisconsin on January 29, 1928, a son of the late Anton and Francis (Suhadolnik) Debevetz.

He graduated from Central High School in Sheboygan, and later listed with the U.S. Army and served in Japan and Korea. He was awarded the WWII Victory Medal and Army of Occupation Medal in Japan, and reached the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. He graduated from University of Utah in 1952, where he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, and played on the University basketball team. Tony worked for Sears in various management positions throughout the United States for most of his career and spent the last 30 years working in Sears Corporate Headquarters in Chicago. After retiring in 1989, he was actively involved in both the AARP, serving on the Board of directors for the Illinois chapter and National Association of Retired Sears Employees (NARSE). Tony was also an avid outdoorsman and sportsman in his earlier years and an avid golfer throughout his life.

Besides his wife of 60 years, he is survived by daughters, Diane Anderson and her husband, Michael of Parkland, Florida, and Tanya Trevisan and her husband, Jon of Duxbury, Massachusetts, and son, Doug Debevetz and his wife, Ravid Lurie of Israel. His grandchildren, Tyler and Will Trevisan of Duxbury and April Hanson and her husband, Seth of Boise, Idaho, his great grandson, Carter Hanson. He is the brother of Lillian Diener of Menomonie Falls, Wisconsin, and uncle of Denice Mader and Donna Anderson.

I have had an ongoing sewer issue for the past several years. he culprit is tree roots and I have been told by a number of plumbing and sewer outits that the solution is to replace it. Of course my sewer line travels beneath my relatively new landscaped yard and also the front walkway and I’ve been putting of this project. I have done some poking around and discovered that an alternative to digging would be to insert a liner so the tree roots don’t grow back. Is this a viable solution?

Sewer lining is an excellent solution. Provided that the existing line doesn’t have signiicant shits, separations, or misalignments that would impede the insertion of a liner, “trenchless” as it is commonly referred to, may very well be the answer for you. To ind out if your line is a candidate, you will need a clear picture of your entire line so the line may be inspected for pipe integrity. In the case where tree roots are present, a clear Mike Borowski visual on the camera will typically irst require a thorough cleaning of the entire line. A splendid taste of East Asia at Thipi Thai GLEN ELLYN – There’s nothing quite like the mix of sweet and savory flavors that you get from Thai food.

Spiciness is a hallmark of many forms of Asian cuisine, and you’ll get that from Thai food, too. But the combination of opposing flavors sets Thai food apart.

As a longtime fan of the cuisine, I had high hopes when I stopped by Thipi Thai in Glen Ellyn on a recent weeknight. And my dining companion, even more of an aficionado, was nearly chomping at the bit with hunger.

Fortunately, we were not disappointed. From the enchanting decor to the delightful dishes, we were in for a terrifically memorable meal.

Without hesitation, we placed our drink orders as soon as we saw the menu – we never pass up a chance to get Thai iced tea. It’s a strongly brewed iced tea with sugar and condensed milk.

The milk and the sugar complement the bitterness of the tea rather than masking it, making for a sensation that engages your taste buds.

For appetizers, I opted for the shumai steamed crabmeat dumplings served with soy sesame vinaigrette for dipping. It’s a common order for me, and Thipi Thai’s version was just right. My companion went for the coconut shrimp, which came with a pineapple mango sauce.

“Perfectly sweet and tangy,” my dining companion said.

On to the entrees. We’re both big fans of pad woonsen, which is what my companion ordered, but I thought I’d try something different and selected the orange beef. I’m only moderately tolerant of spicy food, but the menu showed just one pepper next to my choice – the scale appears to go up to three for items such as kung pao noodle chicken.

With its preseason football acclimatization practice period, the IHSA has set specific guidelines for football practices through Aug. 27.

The general consensus among coaches was that no one argued with the concept behind the new rules. Safety is the priority. However, the complaints came in smaller nit-picks over how the changes were implemented.

“You’re going to find out what happens because of the limited contact and practice time,” Glenbard East coach John Walters said. “It’s going to be a trial and error thing, but player safety is of the utmost concern. If this is going to eliminate potential dehydration and heat exhaustion, I’m all for it. It’s one of those things where you’re going to have to take a wait and see stance.”

Fall sports officially began practicing on Wednesday, but football teams are being forced to work a little bit differently starting this year.

New practice rules set by the IHSA have altered the way coaching staffs are allowed to operate summer practices that take place before school hours return.

Some schools, like York, IC Catholic and Montini, shifted to normal practice hours this week as the start of the football preseason coincided with school starting, so the limitations on early practices only had a minimal impact. Others will be limited for a little more than a week.

The two topics that most coaches brought up were that three-hour practices put an emphasis on efficiency, and that prohibiting teams from tackling until closer to the first game could cause problems.

“You really have to plan your practices to hit all three areas,” Montini coach Chris Andriano said. “In the preseason that’s hard to do. We’re going to have to be very organized and very smart.”

Andriano used to have Montini run separate practices for offense, defense and special teams. He believes the limited practice time will impact special teams the most.

York coach Steve Nye mentioned that most of the base offensive and defensive concepts were worked on during summer practices. It’s the blitz packages and other more intricate things that will get worked on now. The limited practice time and tackling time makes that tougher.

It also makes it tougher on the younger levels, where players are still learning the basics of tackling.

“I think it’s really difficult for freshmen to be able to get a team prepared to play in two and a half weeks when they really can’t hit until 10 days before the first game,” Nye said. “They haven’t really done any tackling. You want to teach

By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Even after starring at the club and high school level, Christina Ordonez still needed time to adjust to Big Ten soccer.

The York grad, who is the school’s all-time leading scorer, is entering her second season at Michigan. In her freshman season, she saw regular action, but wasn’t featured as prominently and had to adjust to the new role.

“It was definitely different for me because it was a lot faster pace, but I had a great experience and I had a lot of fun,” Ordonez said. “I end-

ed up really, really enjoying my first year and I got a good amount of playing time for a freshman.”

Instead of playing up top at forward like she did with the Dukes, which allowed her to score goals in bunches, Ordonez played her club position

of midfield with the Wolverines. It’s the position she said she feels most comfortable with. During the offseason she has been training out wide in both the midfield and defense.

Her versatility will help her get on the field for the Wolverines, which had a 16-53 record and made the NCAA Sweet 16 last fall despite having just three seniors on the roster. Ordonez played in 16 of Michigan’s 24 matches and saw playing time in the NCAA Tournament.

“It’s definitely a really competitive atmosphere and practice is tough, but it’s nice because you really do have to work for your spot,” she

said. “It was a really cool experience to get that far in the tournament. It was cool to be a part of the tournament.”

Despite playing further from goal than she did in high school, Ordonez still found the back of the net twice for Michigan. She said scoring her first career goal was the highlight of her season.

Ordonez said the day-today commitment and hours put into soccer was the bigger adjustment from her club and high school days. All the games and travel throughout her youth career were trumped by the work and training Michigan demands.

“I think it’s definitely a lot

different than club because it was so much more intense and so much more soccer,” Ordonez said. “When you’re not doing soccer you’re doing weightlifting and other fitness things.”

Ordonez hopes to earn more playing time and thinks the Wolverines can be even better this fall. Her early impressions of the new squad have been positive, and she’s thinking big: Big Ten champs and a Final Four appearance.

“We have a lot of good players, and we had a really good freshmen class come in, which has made it that much more competitive in practice,” she said.

As a junior, Rizzo led the team with 94 blocks and also contributed 178 kills and 26 aces. Rizzo enters this season as one of six seniors on the team.

Whitewater pipeline There already were two Glenbard East grads on the Wisconsin Whitewater women’s soccer team: Erin Mrazek and Jessica Grumstrup. As freshmen, the pair helped the Warhawks win the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with an 8-0 record and the team made the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament. Mrazek made 17 substitute appearances and scored a goal. Grumstrup played 19 times and made one start. Now, goalkeeper Veronica Fairbairn will join her former high school teammates at Whitewater. Fair-

bairn is Glenbard East’s career shutout leader.

On the men’s side, another former Ram, Kyle Ricely, will enter his sophomore year with the Warhawks. Last year as a freshman midfielder, Ricely made four appearances with one start and scored one goal.

Senior leader Sean Little (Glenbard East) started all 17 matches for Beloit men’s soccer last year. Now, the senior defender enters the season as one of three seniors on the roster. The Buccaneers were picked fourth in the preseason coaches poll in the Midwest Conference.

Playmaking Eagle After appearing in all 18 matches and starting in 17

last season, Briana Grenke (Glenbard East) will be hoping for big things this season with Benedictine women’s soccer.

The forward/midfielder had four goals and three assists last season to finish second on the Eagles in points. As a senior this season, Grenke will hope to lift the Eagles to an improvement on last season’s five wins.

Climbing up the depth chart Lawrence University junior wide receiver Tyler Lueck (Glenbard East) is looking to continue the improvement he showed last season. Lueck caught six passes for 27 yards as a sophomore to build on his three receptions for 17 yards as a freshman.

Pioneering Bulldog Brendan Shannon (Montini, Lombard) will have a lot to build on this fall after producing a breakout season for Butler football last year. As a junior wide receiver he had team-highs in receptions (62), receiving yards (864) and touchdown receptions (eight).

His accomplishments earned him both Academic All-Pioneer League Second Team and All-Pioneer League Second Team. Shannon, a redshirt senior, plays on the Bulldogs with fellow Montini grads Zach Taylor, a redshirt sophomore offensive lineman from Clarendon Hills, and Matthew Kersten, a redshirt sophomore kicker from Naperville.

Elmhurst golfer tees it up for Evans Scholars SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA LAKE FOREST – In a unique matchup, PGA Tour professionals Luke Donald and Mark Wilson, an Elmhurst resident, teamed with Chicago Bulls’ guard Kirk Hinrich and Northwestern University men’s basketball coach Chris Collins for a nine-hole exhibition Monday at Conway Farms Golf Club, host of the 2013 BMW Championship.

The exhibition benefited the Evans Scholars Foundation, which provides full housing and tuition scholarships for deserving caddies across the country.

Conducted by the Western Golf Association, the exhibition paired Donald and Collins against Wilson and Hinrich in a Scotch Foursome alternate shot format as teams, and they competed for up to $5,000 per hole.

The pair played for the U15 Eclipse Select Soccer Club, based in Oak Brook. Eclipse won the Elite Club National League Finals held from July 10 to 15 in Richmond, Va. Two weeks later the team won again at the United States Youth Soccer Association National Finals in Overland Park, Kan. In the USYSA finals, the team went 2-0-1 in pool play and beat Ambassadors FC from Ohio in the final, 4-1 in overtime.

Navarro, a junior, and Privett, a sophomore, also won the State Cup with Eclipse this summer.
