“We haven’t flown since,” Christine Keuning said.

Christine Keuning has attended several conferences about allergies and still hasn’t found anyone whose allergy is as severe as her daughter’s.

Nicole can’t participate in any clinical studies on allergies because it’s just too dangerous.

People with egg and milk allergies often grow out of them, but those with nut allergies – especially ones as severe as Nicole’s – rarely do, Keuning said.

“They didn’t say impossible, but very, very unlikely,” Keuning said about the prognosis from Nicole’s doctors.

Nicole worries a lot about her allergy. But she’s also a playful kid, running around the garden and enjoying the sun. Because of her “awesome grandma,” she’ll soon get to feed the birds and squirrels, too.

The sunflowers have given her something nice to look forward to.

“I think they’re really cool,” Nicole said.

WESTERN SPRINGS – There are a lot of things 7-yearold Nicole Keuning can’t do or eat because of her severe peanut allergy.

She can’t eat lunch at school, so she comes home for lunch every day. She can’t participate in school projects that involve planting seeds. She usually can’t go out to eat with her family. She can’t even eat ice cream – almost all U.S.-produced ice cream goes through a factory that also processes peanuts. Because Nicole’s allergy is so severe, that’s enough to cause her to go into anaphylactic shock, where her throat closes up immediately.

Doctors have visited Field Park Elementary specifically for Nicole, to instruct teachers on how to treat her should she have an allergic reaction.

“So that when we call, they know her name and they know who she is,” said Christine Keuning, Nicole’s mom.

Preston, an avid gardener, discovered all commercial bird feed is produced in factories that also process peanuts. She knows because she called every manufacturer she could find.

Preston and Nicole were waiting a few days to let the seeds dry before offering them as food. It’s not a trip to Disney World, but for a kid who has to miss out on a lot, it’s a big deal.

“I really like animals,” Nicole said. “I like that they run around and stuff, and they’re always cute.”

Nicole always wears two bracelets that indicate she has a severe allergy. Three times she’s either eaten or come into contact with something containing peanuts and had to be injected with epinephrine, followed by treatment at a hos-

Group that wants Obama impeached takes to area overpasses

By ALEX RUPPENTHAL aruppenthal@shawmedia.com WESTERN SPRINGS – Seventeen protesters from a group dubbing itself “Overpasses for Obama’s Impeachment” held a demonstration Aug. 6 on a pedestrian bridge over Interstate 294.

Holding signs that read “Jail the Traitor Obama” and “Honk to Impeach,” the group protested from 4 to 6 p.m., during the evening rush hour along the bridge, which connects Western Springs and Hinsdale.

“There was a lot of positive reaction,” said Cindy Ca-

sanova of Roselle, one of the protesters. “Lot of beeping, lot of honks, lot of waving [and people saying], ‘Way to go.’”

Casanova said the group was formed in early June by an Oklahoma man and has 30,000 members nationally, including more than 1,000 in Illinois. Similar protests were held in other parts of the state Aug. 6, and upcoming protests are planned Sept.

2 in Lombard and Sept. 11 in Elmhurst.

“The aim of the group is basically what it says,” Casanova said. “We want Obama impeached for what we con-

sider treasonous actions.”

Specifically, Casanova mentioned Obama’s response to the deadly attack on the U.S. embassy in Benghazi, Libya, along with his efforts to mandate healthcare, efforts to reform immigration and enhance gun control.

“We just want him impeached for further hurting and killing our country,” Casanova said. “…We just don’t feel that he’s for America.

That’s for sure.”

LA GRANGE – Seventh Avenue School welcomed new principal Erin Hall on July 1.

Hall, a former assistant principal in Schaumburg District 54, replaced Sherry Kryzanski, who retired after last school year.

District 105 Superintendent Glenn Schlichting said Hall was selected from more than 120 candidates, many administrators from high-profile suburban districts.

“We are really excited,” Schlichting said. “[Hall] is very collaborative. She’s already reached out and met with all of the staff members through the summer.”

Hall grew up in La Grange and attended Lyons Township High School. She studied elementary and special

education at Ball State University before obtaining two Master’s degrees from Northern IlliErin Hall nois University, one in curriculum and instruction and another in education administration.

As an assistant principal in Schaumburg for three years, she split time between two elementary schools with more than 1,000 students.

One of the schools achieved a national Blue Ribbon status.

Before working in Schaumburg, Hall was a special education teacher and inclusion facilitator in Glen Ellyn District 41 for 13 years.

During that time, she also completed an internship in administration.

Now, the pet-friendly restaurant is going a step further. As part of its Puppy Love Fundraiser, prasino will donate 10 percent of every check of customers who dine with their dogs on the patio to PAWS Chicago, the city’s largest no-kill humane organization.

The restaurant will make

donations for customers who visit between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday through the end of the patio season.

The foundation intends to strengthen the district’s efforts to bring together students and families from different elementary schools before they get to Gurrie. It also will fund college scholarships for former District 105 students.

Schlichting said the foundation still is ironing out specifics for the program, but it will award scholarships to students from each of the district’s elementary schools.

About half of the scholarships will be based on financial need.

LA GRANGE – District 105 Superintendent Glenn Schlichting said when he walked through Gurrie Middle School a decade ago, he noticed students grouped in the hallways based on where they went to elementary school.

Because Gurrie students come from four different elementary schools in three different towns – Hodgkins, Countryside and La Grange – the middle school’s student body was more segmented than one would hope.

In 2004, the district passed a referendum designed to bring students and families from different communities together. Basketball and volleyball intramural programs now include students from all four elementary schools, and the schools also partner for common field trips, such as a meeting for the end of a thirdgrade unit on immigration.

“It’s made a huge difference,” said Schlichting, who said he no longer sees clusters of students based on their elementary schools at Gurrie.

The community response to the district’s effort was so positive, Schlichting said, that it now is starting a foundation to further strengthen family and community relationships.

Fundraising effort begins for Veterans Memorial LA GRANGE PARK – Nearly $30,000 has been raised for a new Veterans Memorial planned for Memorial Park in La Grange Park.

The Community Park District of La Grange Park launched a fundraising campaign for the memorial over the July 4 weekend.

So far, it has received $25,000 in pledges from individuals and businesses, along with nearly $2,000 in advance payments for engraved bricks that will be featured at the memorial.

The park district formed a Veterans Memorial Committee last year in hopes to raise $85,000 for the project by the end of 2013.

The park district also has filed two grant requests to raise money for the memorial and plans to apply for more.

The committee estimates construction on the memorial will be done in time for a Memorial Day dedication ceremony May 26.

Forms for buying an engraved brick can be found on the park district website, cpdlgp.org. Two types of bricks are available: An 8-inch-by-8-inch brick that fits up to six lines of script with 20 spaces per line and costs $200, or a 4-inch-by-8-inch brick that fits three lines of script with 20 spaces per line and costs $100.

‘No soliciting’ stickers available at Village Hall “No soliciting” stickers now are available for purchase at Village Hall.

Stickers cost $1 and should be affixed to residents’ front door or adjacent window in a clearly visible location. It is illegal for any person, regardless of whether he or she is registered with the village, to solicit a residence where a “No Solicitors” sticker is visible.

INDIAN HEAD PARK Man dies of heart attack after car crash An Indian Head Park man who died after a car crash Sunday died of natural causes, likely a heart attack.

Michael Hartman, 62, crashed his vehicle on the ramp from I-294 to I-55 at 6:14 p.m. Sunday, Illinois State Police said. He was transported to Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital and pronounced dead shortly after.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office said Hartman died of arterial sclerotic cardiovascular disease, or a heart attack.

Hartman’s vehicle was the only one involved in the crash.

LA GRANGE PARK – A 35-yearold La Grange Park man has been sentenced to 12 years and 7 months in federal prison after pleading guilty last year to electronically distributing child pornography.

Nathan Arger, of the 500 block of Spring Avenue, was arrested Sept.

22, 2011, after an FBI investigation that found he used a personal computer to download pornographic images of children.

Arger has been held at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago since pleading guilty in August 2012. He was sentenced Friday by U.S. District Court Judge Amy St. Eve in Chicago.

Arger is a former Lyons Township High School nonfaculty staff member. During their investigation, FBI agents accessed Arger’s files through a peer-to-peer network and found 700 images and 12 video files, including more than 100 images involving known victims identified by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Linking the shared files to the Internet account at Arger’s residence, the FBI obtained a search warrant and reviewed his computer. The search produced 160 gigabytes of child pornography and child erotica.

There also were pictures and a video of Arger with two young girls, one partially nude, police said.

She was one of five women in a class of 30 at the Chicago Police Academy. Being a woman, Padalik said she had to prove herself to the “good old boy” network in police departments in the early 1980s. She never let that mentality get her down, and racked up about 20 awards during her career.

One of our patrons did her own math and told me that she saves about $250 a year in movie rentals by borrowing DVDs from the library. You plug in the resources you used and it tells you what it would cost for you to buy those materials or services.

On another level, the library has an impact on our local economy. It’s well-accepted that good schools contribute to home values, but did you know that libraries also have an impact? A report from the Urban Libraries Council and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation outlined how libraries create more stable communities.

We are experiencing many of these factors here in La Grange Park. In this Internet age, more than a quarter of American homes – about 28 percent – don’t have Internet access. For many of those people, libraries provide their only access to computer technologies.

The La Grange Park library’s computers constantly are in use.

The next time you stop in, we’ll be happy to help you do a little math to find the value of your needs.

And, we’ll continue to provide a significant value to our community beyond books.

BROOKFIELD – Officials at the Brookfield Zoo announced Thursday that a female dolphin calf has died.

The Brookfield Zoo announced the birth of the calf to Allie, a 26-year-old bottle nose dolphin, earlier this week. The unnamed baby was born about 11 a.m. Aug. 2 and died Thursday morning.

A necropsy (animal autopsy) is pending, according to a news release.

“This was devastating to everyone in our zoo family, but particularly to the dolphin staff,” said Bill Zeigler, senior vice president of collections and animal care for the Chicago Zoological Society. “Our experienced veterinary and marine mammal staff provided the best possible care to the calf’s 26-year-old mother, Allie, throughout her pregnancy.

Our primary concern now is

for the well-being of Allie, who is being monitored closely.”

According to the release, the calf began a sudden and rapid decline Aug. 7. The zoo’s dolphin staff was “cautiously optimistic” as the calf began nursing and swimming with its mother. Late Aug. 7 and early Thursday, zoo staff reported that the frequency of the calf’s nursing was down.

The calf’s health continued to decline. Staff stepped in and began providing CPR in an attempt to resuscitate her, but efforts were unsuccessful and the calf died.

According to the release, young calves can fade quickly.

The release cited studies from a 43-year-old wild dolphin research program in Sarasota, Fla., that show that moralities of neonatal calves during the first 30 days of life account for the largest rate of loss to dolphin populations in the wild.

La Grange resident Brian P. Davis has been named system vice president and chief marketing officer of the new health system created by the merger of Naperville-based Edward Hospital & Health Services and Elmhurst Memorial Healthcare.

Davis joined Edward in 1998 and has overseen government relations and marketing. He serves on the Plainfield Advisory Task Force on Economic Development and the Advisory Board for the DuPage County FORWARD initiative to fight childhood obesity. He is a former board member of the Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce and former adjunct instructor at Lewis University in Romeoville.

By Linda Sokol Francis, E.A. NEW ADJUSTMENTS ON THE AMT Starting this year, the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) has been adjusted for inflation. The exemptions, the phaseout thresholds and the line between the 26-percent and 28-percent AMT brackets have been raised.

The new exemptions are $51,900 for singles and heads of households, $80,800 for couples filing jointly or qualifying widows or widowers and $40,400 for marrieds filing individually. Phaseouts of exemptions start at $115, 400 for single taxpayers and heads of households, $153,900 for couples filing jointly and half that for marrieds filing individually. The exemptions will be phased out totally at $323,000 for singles, $477,100 for couples filing jointly and half that for those filing individually.

For 2013, the AMT rate is 26-percent for the first $179,500 of taxable income (AMTI less exemptions) or $89,750 for couples filing individually, and 28-percent for income over that.

A splendid taste of East Asia at Thipi Thai GLEN ELLYN – There’s nothing quite like the mix of sweet and savory flavors that you get from Thai food.

Spiciness is a hallmark of many forms of Asian cuisine, and you’ll get that from Thai food, too. But the combination of opposing flavors sets Thai food apart.

As a longtime fan of the cuisine, I had high hopes when I stopped by Thipi Thai in Glen Ellyn on a recent weeknight. And my dining companion, even more of an aficionado, was nearly chomping at the bit with hunger.

Fortunately, we were not disappointed. From the enchanting decor to the delightful dishes, we were in for a terrifically memorable meal.

Without hesitation, we placed our drink orders as soon as we saw the menu – we never pass up a chance to get Thai iced tea. It’s a strongly brewed iced tea with sugar and condensed milk.

The milk and the sugar complement the bitterness of the tea rather than masking it, making for a sensation that engages your taste buds.

For appetizers, I opted for the shumai steamed crabmeat dumplings served with soy sesame vinaigrette for dipping. It’s a common order for me, and Thipi Thai’s version was just right. My companion went for the coconut shrimp, which came with a pineapple mango sauce.

“Perfectly sweet and tangy,” my dining companion said.

On to the entrees. We’re both big fans of pad woonsen, which is what my companion ordered, but I thought I’d try something different and selected the orange beef. I’m only moderately tolerant of spicy food, but the menu showed just one pepper next to my choice – the scale appears to go up to three for items such as kung pao noodle chicken.

Ground rules for gridiron practices in effect

The IHSA tinkered with the rules for the first couple of weeks of fall practices, but the changes aren’t affecting each team and coaching staff the same way.

The limited hours, which were created in part to avoid health issues in the August heat, aren’t a massive change for most teams. However, with just three hours to practice, it creates a need to be more efficient with that time.

Lyons Township barely is affected by the alteration due to the fact that school hours start on Thursday with two administration days. That

“Any coach needs to make sure we’re putting safety first,” Curtin said. “It’s a step in the right direction. The system is definitely better in the sense that we’re putting some requirements on how long we can go.”

Other nearby schools don’t have the same school calendar, so they will have more of the altered practices. Morton starts school on Aug. 26 and Nazareth starts Monday.

“I think most people follow a similar kind of schedule anyway,” said LT coach Kurt Weinberg. “If they want to make it similar across the board it’s not a terrible thing.”

Weinberg said the biggest difference for his schedule is that two-a-day practices now require a longer gap in between practice. This has more

of an affect on the younger levels, where kids don’t have the ability to drive and leave campus for that time.

“That’s tough with those lower levels that don’t have the opportunity to leave or drive,” Weinberg said. “So now you have this big chunk of time without the mobility and having the ability to leave.”

The next step in the changes likely will relate to summer practices. Curtin and Weinberg assumed summer workouts will be regulated, but they weren’t sure how yet.

This could possibly mean the end of the summer getaway trips where teams head to local colleges for camps.

“There’s really no official policy in terms of our summer practices,” Weinberg said.

“We follow the same schedule in the summer, but some people do whatever they want.”

Vrhel takes to Lehigh volleyball Naz grad, Berwyn native gets best of academics, athletics

By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com BETHLEHEM, Pa. – As a sophomore, Ana Vrhel is completing her first full offseason as a college athlete. What an offseason it was.

Vrhel, a middle blocker for Lehigh, traveled with her team to China for three weeks. While the Berwyn native and Nazareth graduate joked there wasn’t much ice to use after matches and a lot of the team came back with nagging injuries, it was an unforgettable trip on and off the court.

The Mountain Hawks hit up many of the major tourist attractions — the Great Wall

of China, the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square — but they also spent a lot of time taking on Chinese club teams.

“It was a great time,” Vrhel said. “We got to experience the culture and we also got to play really good teams.”

Vrhel said the Chinese players spend more time practicing because they have more of a professional model as opposed to the scholastic sports model in the U.S. She also noticed a slightly different style of play, notably scrappier play.

“They use their shots more,” she said. “They’re not as tall as the American players. They have some height, but they are smart about

where they play the ball.”

With that experience behind Vrhel and the Mountain Hawks, they are hoping to have a strong season in the Patriot League. After going 12-14 overall and 8-6 in conference last season, Vrhel is hoping the team can move up the league standings.

“I think we have a really strong team,” Vrhel said.

“We have six players coming in. We learned how to play

together really well in China.

I think we’re probably one of the best teams in the Patriot League.”

Vrhel quickly took to the eastern Pennsylvania school, which is located just over an hour north of Philadelphia.

During her recruitment, Vrhel emailed the previous Lehigh coach, but didn’t hear back.

When current coach Bob Bertucci took over in 2011, he liked the playing style of then-Mountain Hawk Paige Kruse. Like Vrhel, Kruse came from First Alliance Volleyball Club and that club connection made Bertucci reach out to Vrhel.

Once she discovered that

Lehigh valued academics and athletics equally and visited the campus, she was sold. At Lehigh, classes are all in the morning, which forces practices to take place after school similar to a high school schedule.

“It’s great because they’re really high on academics here,” Vrhel said. “It’s cool to focus on academics, but still be a Division I athlete.”

After her full and busy offseason, Vrhel is expecting bigger things this fall.

“Coming into preseason you know what to expect,” she said. “Last year I was really nervous about the intensity and how many hours you’d be in the gym.”

Digging for the Blue Devils Duke sophomore defensive specialist Laura Williams (Lyons Township, Western Springs) will look to grab more playing time for the Blue Devils this season. As a freshman, Williams played in 24 matches and made three starts. She tallied 142 digs and eight aces. Returning two-time ACC Defensive Player of the Year Ali McCurdy likely will take the starting spot at libero, but Williams could see time elsewhere in the back row.

Heavy hitter Kelsey Keeve (Lyons Township, La Grange) did a little bit

Sibling rivalry The Indiana Purdue-Fort Wayne volleyball team had a 25-7 record last season and Jen Milligan (Nazareth, La Grange Park) was a big part of that success. Milligan played in every set and started in 29 of 32 matches as a defensive specialist/libero. She is heading into her final season with the Mastodons, but her younger sister, Emily, now is joining her in the Summit League. Emily Milligan is going to be a freshman defensive specialist for North Dakota State. The two could first face each other Oct. 18 at North Dakota State.

Hit stuffer Gabby Pethokoukis (Benet, Western Springs) led Villanova in blocks last season with 82.

She also had 137 kills despite

missing the final nine games of the season due to illness.

Pethokoukis hopes to stay healthy for a full season as a junior this fall.

Regional runner Sam Telfer (Lyons Township, La Grange) competed at the NCAA Midwest Regional for the Illinois cross country team last fall. He was the sixth fastest Illini runner at the meet.

As a redshirt sophomore, Telfer will look to improve on his 76th place finish.

Hawkeye kickers Two LT grads from La Grange, Katie Nasenbenny and Sarah Mazur, helped Iowa soccer rack up the second-most wins in school history last fall.

The Hawkeyes went 12-6-3, and both players are back to try and top that winning season. Nasenbenny, who will be a junior midfielder, started all 21 games and scored four goals with an assist. She was a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar for having a GPA higher than 3.7. Mazur made eight substitute appearances as a freshman.

Back line Bronco Brian Heimerdinger (Lyons

Township, La Grange) cracked the starting lineup last season for Western Michigan soccer.

He made 16 appearances and eight starts, his first career starts. Now, the senior defender will look to take on a more important role at the back for the Broncos. His brother, Brett, will make his college debut at St. Mary’s of Minnesota this fall.

Ivy League defender Princeton senior Billy McGuinness (Lyons Township, La Grange Park) returns as the starting right back for the men’s soccer team. McGuinness made 14 starts and one more sub appearance for Princeton last year. He is one of seven seniors on the Tigers this fall.

All-conference freshman It didn’t take long for Elliot Borge (Lyons Township, Western Springs) to make an impression at Wheaton College. Borge played in all 25 matches and started in 23 as a freshman midfielder.

He scored twice and had an assist to earn first team All-College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin honors.

After an 18-4-3 season that included a CCIW title, Borge and the four other first-team CCIW returners will look for more success.

Top shot stopper In 15 starts last season for Lake Forest College soccer, Ethan Guenther (Lyons Township, La Grange) surrendered just six goals. His work in goal earned him first team All-Midwest Conference and third team All-North Region honors.

Guenther enters into his final college season this fall as a senior.

Standout newcomer returns Mark Sewall (Lyons Township, Western Springs) had a breakout season for Indiana State football last fall. As a redshirt freshman defensive back he had 31 tackles, an interception, a fumble returned for a touchdown and a blocked kick to be named to the Missouri Valley Football Conference All-Newcomer Team. His older brother, Alex, earned the same award at the same position in 2008. Now Mark will try to improve on his strong first campaign.

February 8, 1930 By election of the people, the Library Act was amended to permit the library to be built in any park in the Village under exclusive control and supervision of library directors.

April 11, 1930 Hired Grace Gilman as librarian prior to opening; signed agreement with architect Connor and O’Connor.

May 26, 1930 Memorandum of agreement signed between Village and library to permit the library to erect and maintain a library on Village land.

Awarded General Contract for construction of library building to Arvid H. Viren for $51,630.

October 4, 1930 Ground breaking and laying of cornerstone.

November 13, 1930 Resolution passed to construct a joint heating plant with the Township for heating both the Town Hall and the Library.

April 4, 1931 Dedication and opening of the library. Those present included Mr. Connor, Architect of the building and Edgar Cameron, a Chicago artist who painted the mural of Marquette and Joliet. Robert Somer- ville, first Library Board President, presented the Cameron Mural and decorative map of the region as a personal gift to the Library. Over 1800 people registered for library cards the first week the library was opened.

April 22, 1931 Organizational meeting for Friends of the Library. Mrs. Joseph Jaros was elected President.

December 22, 1931 Cut annual operating budget from $8,990 to $6,500 due to low rate of tax collection during the depression.

September 30, 1936 Board voted to replace library doors with solid oak entrance doors.

February 24, 1937 Riverside Historical Society materials housed in the Library.

February 1, 1940 Village moved out of basement room of the library. Basement remodeled into a children’s room.

May 1, 1966 Riverside Public Library becomes one of the first libraries to join the new Suburban Library System (SLS).

April 1975 Riverside Public Library was recipient of the “All-Star Library Award” from the Illinois Library Association. Referendum passed to increase library tax rate from 19 mils to 40 mils.

November 1984 Referendum by voters to fund a $1,500,000 addition to the library passed 5,196 to 4,470. Architect : Frye Gillian Molinaro; Contractor: A.C.M. Associates; Size:12,500 sq. ft. addition to the 5,761 sq. ft. building.

April 14, 1985 Groundbreaking for new addition.

September 7, 1986 Grand re-opening of the library with new addition.

October 1989 and January 1990 Flamingo Film Company spent four days filming an Encyclopedia Britannica Film in the Library.

December 1991 Riverside Public Library pictured on the cover of American Libraries magazine.

April 1997 Riverside Public Library building is used for the taping of the Oprah Winfrey Show book discussion of Stones from the River by Ursula Hegi.

October 1997 The Riverside Public Library joined the World Wide Web: www.sls. lib.il.us/rss/ June 1998 Library awarded grant of $33,306 from the Illinois State Library to renovate Terrace into the Quiet Read ing Room. Construction began March 1999.

July 2008 Bats at the Library, a children’s book by Brian Lies, is published by Houghton-Mifflin Corporation. The “Library” used in the book is the Riverside Public Library.

October 10, 2008 Author Brian Lies comes to Riverside to read from and autograph his book, Bats at the Library.

The Library celebrates this event with “Batoberfest”, an evening of fun for the entire community.

Bat images lit the Library Building and the Village’s Water Tower to publicize the event.

May 2010 The Library is involved in the Language of Conservation and is the recipient installations of poetry and other related materials throughout the building. “The Language of Conservation”, is an initia- tive of the Poets House in partnership with the Chicago Zoological Society, Riverside Public Library and Brookfield Public Library, as well as a consortium of zoos and libraries nationwide. It is made possible by a National Leadership grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services and will continue for three years.

October 2010 The Library celebrates the 80th Anniversary of the laying of the cornerstone and begins its 80th year of service to the people of Riverside.

April 2011 The Library celebrates 80 years of service to the community!

November 7, 1999 Dedication of the Quiet Reading Room. Young Adult Area opened on lower level.

April 2004 Lighting fixtures, made to look like those which originally hung in the Library, were installed in the Great Room. The fixtures were purchased with money received from the estate of Grace A. Board, a for- mer staff member and friend of the Library.

April 24, 2005 The Library’s 75th Jubilee Year begins with a Commencement Celebration. A whole year of programs, events and celebrations took place in recognition of the Riverside Public Library’s 75th Anniversary. All costs incurred and associated with the Anniversary year were funded by the River side Friends of the Li brary.

June 2005 Library receives grant of $ 27.000 from the Illinois Clean Energy Foundation to replace lower level light- ing.

April 30, 2006 The Riverside Friends of the Library mark their 75th Anniversary.

Their many years of support to the Library is celebrated.

September 2006 Landscaping project completed. Funded by the Riverside Garden Club, the Frederick Law Olmsted Society and the Riverside Friends of the Library.

Since 1993, the Riverside Arts Center (RAC) has been providing Riverside , its surrounding suburbs and the city of Chicago with exhibitions, arts classes, and special events. The RAC is located in the heart of Historic Riverside. It includes the Freeark Contemporary Art Gallery and a variety of studio space, including a renowned clay studio that has a full range of electric, raku and stoneware kilns. RAC offers more than thirty art classes each term (Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall) for children and adults in mediums ranging from clay, to oil painting, to fused glass jewelry, to printmaking.

The RAC also offers provide tours, field trips, and curriculabased workshops for public and private schools and professional development opportunities for teachers.

RAC programs are partially funded by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency, and sponsorship from Riverside Township.

Riverside Arts Weekend (RAW) celebrates both visual and performing arts with a multi-media juried fine arts fair and full musical performance schedule centered in Riverside’s Guthrie Park.

Glamour takes center stage on Sunday, May 19 at 2:00 p.m. as RAW presents Revelry, a runway show featuring emerging designers from Dominican University.

Revelry highlights fashion as a form of art with the cutting edge work of nine (9) alumnae of Dominican University’s Apparel Design program. The designers will present collections true to their respective artistic visions and highly unique from one another.

Revelry opens with the work of established designer Caroline Borucki (caro___) who has retail presence in New Buffalo, Michigan. It then segues to the work of emerging designers Alexandra Howard (Elmwood Park), Izzy Heras (Romeoville), Amanda Lindley (Tinley Park), Samantha Petkofski (Niles), Iris Carney (Berwyn), Molly Morettes (Park Ridge), Hannah Gerhardt (Omaha, NE) and Erin Von Kannon (Monmouth).

Many of the designers will also exhibit portfolios and samples of their work at a Dominican University collective booth throughout Riverside Arts Weekend.

The mother and son team make up Higgins Glass Studio, 33 E. Quincy, entrusted to the Wimmers to carry on the art crafted by their long time mentors, Fran and Michael Higgins, who began the company in 1948.

Louise and Jonathan agree that it was Fran’s ideas and Michael’s energy and ingenuity that led these two huge talents to start their work out if their Chicago apartment in 1948.

Over the years their art sold in such major retailers as Marshall Field’s, Georg Jensen and Bullocks Wilshire, the very high end store in the California based department store chain.

In 1966, the Higgins decided to return to private studio work and set up their offices in Riverside. The website notes that “here they were free to set their own goals, meet their own standards and design in the direction their hearts and minds led them.”

There’s a lot of history in Higgins, and the Wimmers are proud of their work and the company.
