The park is named after the former president of the Singer Warner Mother’s Club, which owned the park from its opening in 1948 until 1978. Two of Reed’s daughters helped cut the ribbon at the re-dedication.

Proposed D-113A budget to increase by 14 percent

By DAN FARNHAM dfarnham@shawmedia.com LEMONT – The Lemont Bromberek School District 113A Board of Education unanimously approved a tentative budget for fiscal 2014 during its Wednesday meeting.

The budget is 14 percent higher than the previous year, as expected in the district’s strategic plan.

“Last year, we were still in a position where we were trying to rebuild our fund balances,” Superintendent Susan Birkenmaier said. “Now our revenue is being redirected to rebuild our staffing structure, our operations and capital improvements.”

The additional money will be spent on new staff members, curriculum replacement for math, technological enhancements and capital projects.

District Business Manager Barbara Germany said none of the district’s funds are in deficit spending position and revenues have been kept as close to expenditures as possible.

The district will bring in a special consultant to determine the source of an odd, musty smell outside the district administrative office at Old Quarry Middle School.

Superintendent Susan Birkenmaier said the district has tried cleaning the area and replacing the floor mats and is out of ideas for how to combat the odor.

The board disagreed about whether it would be better to hire a service responsible for removing odors in the future, rather than pay a consultant first to determine the cause of the smell. But members agreed that in this case it would be better to find the source of the odor first because of the short time before the school year begins.

LEMONT – When it comes to hitting a good golf shot, Marlene Wiel of Lemont knows it takes luck.

Lucky was how she felt after hitting a hole-in-one at a “Beat the Pro” event July 30 at Broken Arrow Golf Club in Lockport.

“I’ll take luck anyday,” she said.

The 80-year-old also feels lucky to play golf at all. She has been going through onand-off chemotherapy treatments for an incurable blood cancer she was diagnosed with in 2008.

“At this time in my life, I’m not upset about the cancer,” Wiel said. “People so much younger have so much worse.

“I can live with it. I’m happy. I’m 80 years old, and I can play tennis almost every day.”

Wiel had weekly chemotherapy treatments since April. She said she normally does not get fatigued until a couple of days afterward.

“On Monday, she had her treatments and Tuesday she got her hole-in-one,” said Stan Wiel, her husband of almost

60 years.

Marlene was part of a foursome playing the 113-yard third hole during her weekly golf outing.

She was the last of her group to tee off. She said she thought it was a nice shot when she hit it but was shocked when she saw it go in the hole. It was her first holein-one in more than 40 years of golfing.

“Everybody, they just grabbed me and screamed and yelled and couldn’t believe it,” she said.

To honor her achievement, Broken Arrow will put up a plaque in its pro shop.

“I should have said, ‘Well geez, don’t I get a free golf game?’” Marlene said jokingly.

Stan said he had hit a holein-one once before, but it was after a mulligan when he hit his ball in the water.

“I can’t brag about my holein-one anymore,” he said.

Marlene’s thrill on the golf course has made her even more excited about playing.

“I’m just anxious to get out and do more and more now,” she said. “I want to [hit a holein-one] again.”

LEMONT – Puppetry has come naturally for Lemont resident Jan Nelson since she started practicing at age 8 with her sister, Nan. “We had so much fun making these small little hand puppets and putting on shows in the backyard for kids in the neighborhood,” she said.

Nelson has worked fulltime as puppeteer about 30 years, making her own puppets and performing for families and senior groups.

“Jan’s Clan” includes 39 puppets, seven to 10 of which are used during each show, performing popular songs and telling jokes.

The puppets also interact with audience during some situations, such as when a cellphone goes off.

“Spontaneity is always a surprise for the audience,” she said.

Nelson gained puppetry experience growing up. She and her sister were regular performers for three years on a WCIU show called “Up Tempo.”

While she put puppetry aside for a couple of years to start a family, she returned in her late 20s.

“I always had a passion for doing the puppets,” she said. “After 30 years, I enjoy making the puppets. I enjoy planning out the scripts and making the jokes.”

puppets. She likes to do this with children, in particular.

“I like to talk to them about trying different things to find their passion,” she said.

Puppetry also is an outlet for Nelson. She said most of the characters are little fractured pieces of her personality and sometimes ones she has a hard time sharing.

Nelson said she was shy growing up. But at the same time, she created the character “Hilda the Hippo,” who is very outspoken.

Her husband, Jim, who works the sound at her shows, said even now, Jan’s personality is more reserved, while her puppets are more outgoing.

Jan has seen the puppets have a similar effect on children at the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Palos Heights.

She said many of the children are introverted but start to open up when using puppets.

For Jan, making her audience happy is what she enjoys most.

“Just seeing new faces and their reaction, it’s all worth it,” she said. “With each new group, you get a whole bunch of new reactions.”

Jim also likes watching the audience get excited at Jan’s shows.

“I envy her because she’s doing something that really leaves a positive, lasting impression for people,” he said.

LEMONT – Continuing their efforts to add public art to revitalize downtown Lemont, artists Rob Moriarity and Mona Parry are painting a mural depicting the Lemont Massacre of 1885 near the intersection of Main and Lockport streets.

The building that will display the mural is near the site where three men were killed and several others were injured during a fight between the state militia and striking quarry workers and their wives.

“I would like people to see this and think this is a real valuable piece of art in the community and an important bit of our history,” Parry said.

Moriarity and Parry have worked on the mural since the beginning of July, under the supervision of the Lemont Area Historical Society and the Arts and Culture Commission of Lemont.

If the artists cannot complete the work before both have to go back to teaching in mid August, they will finish the mural in the fall.

The building is owned by Bonus Electric, which asked the historical society about creating a mural last fall.

Bonus Electric President and Owner Jay Habercorn said he wanted to give something back to the Lemont community. The business has been in town since 1988.

Moriarity and Parry consulted with the historical society and chose the massacre as the subject.

“I hope that people [who view the mural] make a connection with Lemont history,” Moriarity said. “We have a very rich history.”

not know about the Lemont Massacre. “[The event is] more obscure, I would think,” said Susan Donahue, museum coordinator for the historical society. “Probably because of the fact that we talk more about the buildings and the history of the buildings in Lemont rather than the actual events.”

Parry said the mural will tell a narrative of the event that will stretch across three walls.

It starts with a man talking to the workers going on strike, with two workers shown standing side-by-side. There also is a tall portrait of a wife holding a sock filled with rocks.

The second wall marks the date of the massacre, written in large letters and numbers.

The last wall will portray bread and roses, referring to a labor strike slogan from the early 1900s.

Donahue said some people – including her family – have wondered about creating a mural rendering a negative part of the town’s history.

But she remembers the advice Lemont historian Sonia Kallick gave her about recalling such dubious events.

“Every element of history is important. And we need not to gloss over it because these are the elements that made us who we are.”

As the granddaughter of a quarry worker, Donahue sees the event as part of the labor movement history in the U.S. “I take pride in the fact [the quarry workers] actually stood up for what they believed in,” she said.

Moriarity said the community reaction so far has been mostly positive and supportive. “[The project] has been better than I envisioned,” he said.

“It’s been a great experience.”

8LETTER Illinois Chamber head pushes pension reform To the Editor: Taxpayers should be watching with great interest the ongoing work of the special committee of the Illinois General Assembly wrestling with the tough, but essential issue of pension reform.

While we are encouraged by early reports of the committee’s work, it does not dent the frustration of millions of Illinoisans who believe the time for reform was long, long ago.

However, taxpayers should also be well aware that a large number of Illinois legislators have already stood up for them by supporting strong pension reform legislation.

They have taken the tough vote to restore economic sanity to the state’s finances by voting for meaningful bills.

Let property owners vote Now that Governor Quinn has said he will sign into law the bill authorizing DuPage County to charge a stormwater fee, it is interesting to recall that the Illinois General Assembly passed this bill for Peoria County and DuPage County. LEMONT – George Rimbo, who recently was sworn in as Chief of the Lemont Fire Protection District, is resigning from the Lemont High School District 210 Board of Education, on which he has served since 2009.

The Board of Education is expected to accept Rimbo’s letter of resignation at its next meeting Aug. 19.

Rimbo was elected to a second four-year term in April. His

replacement will serve a twoyear term, after which another two-year term will be open for election in spring 2015.

State code states that the board has 45 days to fill the vacancy after it has been notified of the resignation.

Metropolitan Family Services offers respite to caregivers in DuPage

When his wife was near the end of her life, Richard Pagendarm spent nearly all his time caring for the woman he still calls his “other half.”

For more than two years, he helped feed and clean his wife, Joan.

“Taking care of her was easy,” he said. “The hardest thing I had to deal with was the isolation.”

Pagendarm said that he hired an agency to come and visit, but he would only get a few hours a week – and was paying for each of them.

Then, he said, he found the In-Home Senior Respite program at the DuPage County branch of Metropolitan Family Services.

“It provided another chance to get out of doors,” he said. “I could go out and see people or run errands. Every little bit helped.”

The In-Home Senior Respite program is an association of volunteers that spends three hours each week caring for the elderly who are living with relatives or friends and cannot care for themselves. Program Director Jody Kanikula said that the vast majority of those her volunteers work with have dementia, in addition to other diseases. But the program’s service is more about the caregivers for these people rather than the infirmed.

“The caregivers are there all the time. We just give them a break,” she said. “We help make it easier to keep loved ones at home for the end of their lives. Everyone wants to die at home surrounded by the people they love.”

The senior respite program is the only free service of its kind in DuPage County, according to Kanikula. It has been ongoing since 2001 and has provided an estimated half million dollars in volunteer services. The program serves 60 families in the county and has a waiting list of 20 families.

Volunteers must go through

an interview process, commit to at least six months of work and receive training on how to handle various issues related to aging. Addressing dementia is a central tenant of the training, Kanikula said.

“So many people we work with have dementia that knowing some rules and how to handle certain aspects and challenges associated with it is important, especially to the families,” she said. “They are opening their home to someone to work with the people they care about and want to know that they are able to handle the responsibility.

Typically, due to the time frame required, volunteers are usually older adults who are retired. Many are former caregivers themselves. Pagendarm said that a little more than half a year after his wife passed, he was volunteering for the program that had helped ease his burden.

Kanikula said that when volunteers fill out an application, they must answer questions about what they’re looking for from the experience, as well as their interests, hobbies and personality. This is done to best place them with a potential senior. The volunteer experience can range from watching movies with the clients, to reading, to venturing outside and bonding over a shared interest. All services are free and are without any income-level assessment.

“Ten thousand people a day in this country are turning 65,” she said. “Most of these people have worked all their lives. But many haven’t saved enough for a catastrophic disease like dementia, but have too much to qualify for income-based assistance.”

Pagendarm will start volunteering with his fourth senior at the beginning of August.

“There’s a sad side to it – most people you’re helping are towards the end of their lives,” he said. “It’s sad when someone passes, but you’ve done something to help. It’s worthwhile.”

First Illinois case of swine flu contracted at DuPage County Fair

By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com A Boone County child who had contact with pigs at the DuPage County Fair has contracted the first confirmed case of swine flu in Illinois this year, according to a news release from the Illinois Department of Public Health.

The child exhibited mild symptoms after helping an exhibitor at the county fair in late July, according to the release.

Illinois is the third state to confirm a reported case of swine flu this year. Indiana and Ohio also have confirmed an in-state presence of the illness.

Fair Manager Ellen Sietmann said event organizers were informed about the case Aug. 1 and have confirmed the medical status of the child. Fair officials have not determined which exhibit held the infected swine,

she said.

Sietmann said she believed the fair did all it could to warn against and prevent the spread of diseases during the event.

Organizers provided 28 handwashing stations and 22 hand sanitizer stations, multilingual signs about handwashing and public announcements about health safety.

“The Health Department and Department of Agriculture actually complimented us on all of the precautions we took,” she said.

The DuPage County Health Department declined to comment and said the Illinois Department of Agriculture is responding to inquiries related to the incident.

The H3N2v influenza virus is a variant of influenza A. Four human cases were confirmed last year in Illinois. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported more than a

The bill could affect county appointed governmental agencies that provide public services, including up to 13 fire protection, sanitary, mosquito abatement and street lighting districts. All of the potentially dissolved agencies would first be subject to a six month public review process and audit and could be saved by a backdoor referendum, the release said.

“I believe this has changed the conversation in Springfield,” Conroy said.

Charm and character highlight Public Landing Public Landing is a restaurant rich in character.

Its charming setting and classic upscale fare surely are enough to attract those with an appetite, but the history ingrained in the Lockport eatery’s limestone walls truly sets it apart.

It inhabits the first level of the historic Gaylord Building, a limestone warehouse constructed in 1838, that played a vital role in one of the great enterprises of the 19th century: the digging of the 96-mile-long Illinois & Michigan Canal.

Nestled between the canal, a railway and a park, the building provides a local history lesson to Public Landing diners. Murals on the walls of the building’s entrance explain its significance to mid-1800s trade, while engraved stones just outside the restaurant’s patio offer a glimpse into how the waterway was born. President Abraham Lincoln played a big role.

My companion and I spent a recent summer night at Public Landing. Dinner came first, followed by a relaxing walk through Lincoln Landing Park, a terrace along the canal just south of the Gaylord Building.

Inside, diners are treated to a lovely window view of the restaurant patio, park and terrace overlooking the canal. Of course, you get the sense you’re dining in history: Wooden beams line the restaurant ceiling, and the limestone bricks show through to the interior.

After we were seated, a veteran server greeted us kindly before bringing out warm pretzel bread with our appetizer, the House Made Chips.

The app, tossed with Romano cheese and sea salt and flanked by a ranch dipping sauce, was both tasty and a bargain.

For our entrees, I went with the Char Broiled Pork Tenderloin, while my companion opted for the Blackened Mahi Mahi, served over a roasted red pepper coulis and complemented with zucchini and yellow squash.

The power conference CCIW football emerges as a premier D-III league

By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com North Central College’s football team has won or tied for a conference title the past seven seasons.

But head coach John Thorne knows maintaining that kind of success in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin will only get harder.

“I think the conference has gotten more and more competitive,” said Thorne, who is heading into his 12th season at NCC. “The coaches in place are having good success recruiting people and everybody is competitive. Nobody wants the next program to get ahead of them.”

That’s easier said than done.

During Thorne’s tenure, six of the eight schools in the CCIW have won or taken a share of the conference title.

North Central and Wheaton College have won outright titles while Augustana, Elmhurst, Illinois Wesleyan and Carthage have tied for titles.

Wheaton College head coach Mike Swider has spent nearly 30 years coaching in the CCIW and has seen the overall competition get better in the NCAA Division III conference.

“The conference has always been strong, but from top to bottom it has gotten stronger,” Swider said.

“From top to bottom, the conference is as good as there is in the country. If you are picking the four or five top conferences, no doubt the CCIW is in there.”

To gauge just how high the level of play is, Swider points to a specific area. As a conference, CCIW teams are 16-1 in the first round of the playoffs since 2001.

“That tells you a lot,” he said. “Our conference always wins the first playoff game and that gives you credibility.”

In terms of recruiting, CCIW schools compete with other Division II and III schools, NAIA institutions and players that receive walk-on offers from Division I schools.

The competition for players can be fierce, but Division III schools are looking for a different type of student-athlete than the Division I scholarship athlete.

NAIA schools can offer scholarships, and the smaller state schools in Wisconsin, such as perennial D-III contender Wisconsin-Whitewater, are public institutions with lower tuition rates.

For local players who are serious about school and are interested in playing competitive football, the CCIW is a premier destination.

“Around the Chicagoland area, there are some great high school football players and only so many guys can go Division I,” North Central senior Shane Dierking said.

“Plus the CCIW has outstanding coaching staffs and outstanding institutions where you can get a great education as well as be a part of great athletic programs. Why not sign the papers?”

Luciano excited for next-level football Lemont grad goes to another winning program at North Central College

By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com LEMONT – Last fall, Mike Luciano lined up next to Chris Giatras as teammates on the Lemont football team.

But going forward, Luciano might be assigned the task of tackling his friend and the former Indians’ running back because both are set to become members of different teams in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) this fall.

“We’ve been messing around with each other already and laughing about it,” Luciano said. “I’ve already

told him I’m going to get the game-winning tackle against him down the road.”

A standout Mike Luciano in the defensive secondary for Lemont in 2012, Luciano is headed to North Central College to continue his career.

“I really don’t know what to expect, but I’m excited,” he said. “I want to get in there and see how it differs from high school ball.”

joining a Cardinals program that has either won on its own or shared seven straight conference titles. Over that span, North Central has gone 45-4 in league play.

“We were expected to do a lot in high school, and it will be the same thing here [at

North Central],” said Luciano, who was also considered playing at Saint Xavier University. “Their team is great.

I also love the campus, and I liked the vibe that I got from the whole experience here.”

The cornerback is no stranger to winning on the football field. Last year, the Indians notched 11 victories while advancing to the Class 6A semifinals.

“I really only played on the varsity my senior year because I hurt my ankle as a junior,” he said. “Last year was a ton of fun. I had a lot of friends on the team, and we really liked playing togeth-

er. We worked hard all summer and really went all out for last year. We had a great season even though it didn’t go exactly as planned in the playoffs. But it was still a good ride.”

Luciano is expected to remain in the secondary at North Central as a safety or cornerback, two positions he loves playing.

“When I was really young, I played quarterback and running back,” Luciano said.

“But by the time I got to eighth grade, I was set on defensive back. You can make exciting plays and make big hits. That is what I like doing.”

Lemont’s Giatras moving on to Augustana football SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA LEMONT – After a standout career at Lemont High School, Chris Giatras is set to begin his collegiate career this fall as a freshman on the Augustana College football team.

The running back rushed for a total of 2,367 yards in

three varsity seasons for the Indians, including a 1,592yard performance last fall as a senior. As a junior, Giatras finished with 629 rushing yards and 270 receiving yards.

He also accumulated 42 total touchdowns while wearing a Lemont uniform, 25 of which came in 2012.

LISLE – The playoff dream is still alive.

After a rocky start to the season, the Chicago Red Stars stayed in the hunt for a National Women’s Soccer League playoff berth with a 3-1 win over Seattle Reign FC Saturday at the Lisle-Benedictine University Sports Complex.

Facing U.S. Women’s National Team players and Reign standouts Hope Solo and Megan Rapinoe, Chicago (7-7-5) got on the board first when Sonja Fuss scored on a penalty kick in the 11th minute of the game.

The Reign pulled even on a penalty kick in the 27th minute, but the Red Stars added two more goals against Solo.

Solo attempted to clear the ball late in the first half, but it hit Inka Grings in the chest and she settled it before firing the ball into the back of the net in the 41st minute. Grings virtually sealed the win when she scored off a Jen Hoy feed in the 71st minute.

The Red Stars play on the road against the Washington Spirit today before returning to Lisle for their final home game of the season Saturday.

ELMHURST – Last season Elmhurst College football made the playoffs for the first time in school history.

The Bluejays won a share of the CCIW title for the first time since 1980 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III playoffs.

After the season coach Tim Lester moved on to Syracuse to be the quarterbacks coach and Joe Adam, who was the defensive coordinator, replaced him. Among the challenges facing Adam in his first season is replacing running back Scottie Williams, who won the Gagliardi Award for best player in Division III last season.

SUBURBAN LIFE: What did it mean to you to take over as head coach?

JOE ADAM: Dream come true. It really has been. It’s been such a blessing and it’s been fun putting it together for me and the coaching staff trying to raise the bar for what we did last year.

SL: How do you follow up such a successful year like last year?

JA: I think you start by understanding that that’s how the culture is here now and will continue to be. When we set up to put this thing together it was with this very point in mind that we would have a

team that would be able to contend on a consistent basis, not just a one-hit wonder. It took a bit longer than we would like, but we are to the point where we expect to win.

SL: How has the transition from assistant to head coach been?

JA: I think for me it was an easy transition because I’ve been the recruiting coordinator for almost five seasons now. I was very in tune to what we were looking for, the characteristics and traits we were looking for. We scour the country for not just anybody, but the right people that fit what we’re going to do here.

SL: How do you recruit for a Division III program?

JA: One of the things that I put a big onus on is work ethic here. I expect and I demand work ethic from the players.

It’s going to be work ethic that gets you into successful situations, whether it be here in college or in life. We measure that in a lot of different ways. We measure that in academics, in face-to-face communications and in interactions with our support staff.

SL: What makes the CCIW such a competitive conference?

JA: It’s Illinois football and it’s the partnership that our league has with our area high school coaches who understand the level of football here and understand the type of

players we’re trying to recruit collectively. Plus, the location in the big part of the midwest here where we’re close to major metropolitan areas and a few hour drive from major cities. I think that’s an attraction to kids.

SL: Is there anything you’ve tried to change since you took over?

JA: The thing that identifies this program is called blue collar mentality. It’s on every piece of paper we hand out.

BCM is on every article we issue from a team standpoint.

It’s what our identifying mark is this year. It’s teaching kids what the blue collar mentality stands for.

SL: How has the program changed since you joined in 2007?

JA: It was a very much different culture. This is a complete 180. It’s enjoyable. It’s fun to challenge people and the kids have responded. I give a lot of credit to our kids here. They work like no other group in any level of football I’ve coached.
