Why did you want to become a school principal?

I’m passionate for education and children. If I can transmit that to teachers and kids, I feel that’s an important role.

What brought you to Westmont?

I’ve heard it’s a smaller district. I like the idea of a unit school and how a kindergarten teacher can see the kids go through the system. I love the new relationships and working in a district where I can get to know the families and children really well.

WESTMONT – As the 201314 school year approaches, the Community Unit School District 201 Board of Education has announced there will be a new face at C.E. Miller Elementary School.

Edith Rivera was appointed principal of the school at a recent board meeting. Before coming to Westmont, Rivera was the assistant principal of Roy School in Manheim School District 83 in Franklin Park.

She also has a background in bilingual teaching and bilingual directing, according to the district.

WESTMONT – The village of Westmont is set to issue $11 million in bonds for infrastructure repairs, but the community has a chance to weigh in first.

On Thursday, the Westmont Village Board will answer residents’ questions regarding the bond issuance during a mandatory public hearing at Village Hall.

Of the roughly $11 million in bonds proposed, between $8.5 million and $9.5 million will be used for road repairs and resurfacing while another $1 million to $1.5 million will go toward fixing infrastructure such as alley ways or stormwater systems, according to Spencer Parker, the village’s finance director.

“The streets are in need of improvement,” Parker said.

“There has been concern over the years and this is a good step in the right direction.”

A final vote on the bonds by the Village Board is expected in September or October, according to Parker, and projects, if approved, likely would begin in spring.

“Once we issue [the bonds], we have two to three years to spend it,” he said.

The board has identified different ways to pay off the bonds, including the recent 1.5 percent eating tax issued in June.

“It’s not going to hit the property taxes,” Village Manager Ron Searl said. “A portion is coming from the place for eating tax.”

The eating tax was proposed by the Village Board as a way to erase a $3 million revenue loss due to the repeal of home rule status in November.

Officials said the tax would bring in $760,000 annually to the village. A portion of that amount would pay off the bonds

If 1,059 residents sign a petition and it is validated, a referendum in March 2014 would ask voters whether or not they want the village to issue the bonds. Infrastructure issues in Westmont have been put on hold for the past few years, Searl said.

“This is the best opportunity we’ve had in a very long time [to fund the repairs],” Searl said. “I think the residents will appreciate it once they see the result of it.”

Of the village’s 60 miles of roads, 40 miles are in need of repair, officials have said.

pregnant woman, who is understandably wrapped up in thinking about the health of her unborn baby, not forget about her own dental care. Studies have shown that pregnant women are more likely than the population at large to skip dental visits.

That’s not advisable for anyone, let alone a woman whose changes in estrogen and other hormonal levels affect how the body reacts to the bacteria that can cause gum disease. Gum infections can pose a threat to the placenta and fetus and contribute to the likelihood of a pre-term delivery. Pregnant woman also tend to snack more than the average person. So a good move, for mother and baby, is to anticipate these urges and keep plenty of healthy snacks, like nuts and fruit, handy. Sugary, starchy snacks offer little by way of nutrition and are not good for teeth.

The American Dental Association recommends that pregnant women eat a balanced diet, brush their teeth thoroughly at least twice a day, floss at least once a day and stick to their schedule of dental visits.

Another good reason to visit your dentist during pregnancy is the fact that after the baby is born, a new mother’s time is severely limited. If you are pregnant or planning a family, talk with your dentist about steps you should take.

she said. “And it was like wow, I could totally do this another year and have another insanely good experience in a radically different community.”

Lenihan, who went through an eight-month acceptance process, spent two years in the eastern region of Romania, in a city called Vaslui. While in Vaslui, she worked as a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) volunteer.

“We worked with Romanian teachers of English in schools together,” she said.

“We didn’t replace each other, we worked in coordination with them and split the classes half and half.”

Horses and carts still are used more often than tractors or other modern vehicles for farming in Romania, she said.

While teaching the English language to high school students, Lenihan had to master the Romanian language as well. She said she arrived in the country with zero training in the Latin-based language.

learned it, otherwise you were not going to be able to talk to anybody.”

Along with teaching on a daily basis, Lenihan also was responsible for developing after-school programs, activities and community projects for students.

Lenihan chose a project called GLOW (Girls Leading Our World), a girls camp focusing on the development of young women as leaders and role models in the community.

“I had no idea it was really going to be so successful,” Lenihan said. “None of them had had a camp like this before and after-school activities themselves are extremely rare [in Romania].”

Lenihan spent this past year – her third in the Peace Corps – living in a small village near the central Transylvania area, where she volunteered at a local grade school.

She said her family was supportive when she first

WESTMONT – A Westmont woman is back home after a three-year stint in Romania with the Peace Corps.

Ashley Lenihan, 26, returned to Westmont earlier this month, and admitted she’s already missing the experience she had living in Vaslui in eastern Romania. “[I miss] the ability to live fully integrated into another culture,” said Lenihan, a graduate of Downers Grove North and the University of Illinois. “To really hand wash my clothes because there’s not a washing machine, or to go pick my fruits and vegetables from the garden rather than the Jewel Osco.”

Lenihan signed up for two years, but ending up staying for a third year with the Peace Corps.

“The first year you’re trying to figure out everything that’s going on, then by the second year you can get things done,”

“This has been a very popular event over the years and easily generates over 200 phone calls annually from participants as well as people who are looking for the address list,” village spokesman Larry McIntyre said.

Originally launched in 1996, the event has grown nearly every year.

“We’ve figured out how to continue it in a cost effective manor,” he said. “It’s just a good program and it’s well supported by the residents.”

DOWNERS GROVE – Following their mother across Parker Avenue last week, eight baby ducks fell one, right after the other, into a storm drain.

“They all huddled very close to their mother, and they just fell in,” said Mary Loye, a Downers Grove resident and volunteer with the Chicago Bird Collision Monitors who helped fish the birds from the sewer July 31. “It does happen pretty often.”

Loye said the birds were likely following their mother across the street toward the pond shortly after hatching. She estimated the birds were a day or two old.

Luckily for the clumsy ducklings, Loye, neighbors and an observant mail carrier rallied to save the small, fluffy birds.

Help for the ducklings came from several directions. Postal carrier Colleen Metzger first saw the ducks July 30. After Downers Grove Public Works made an unsuccessful rescue attempt, she called the Downers Grove Reporter the next day, which relayed the message to Downers Grove Police Sgt. Rick Giancarlo.

Around the same time, a

neighbor contacted the Chicago Bird Collision Monitors, which sent Loye to help.

Corralling scared baby ducks is not easy.

The frightened birds scampered along the series of sewer pipes leading from one storm drain to another whenever rescuers got close. That foiled the public works crew’s efforts the day before.

But, Loye and the neighbors eventually found success by encouraging the ducklings down one pipe, when they would become visible, while blocking off the other pipe with a towel as they scooped them up with a net.

It took more than an hour to fish out all eight.

“It would have been nice to take one home, but I know you can’t do that,” Giancarlo said.

Loye put the mallards in a small cage she brought, and waited another two hours hoping their mother would return.

When the mother duck never appeared, Loye took the birds to the Willowbrook Wildlife Center. There, the ducklings will be cared for until they are big enough to live on their own in the DuPage County Forest Preserve.

Village of Westmont selling rainwater barrels WESTMONT – The village of Westmont and the Westmont Water Division have announced that rainwater barrels are available for purchase.

The barrels, which can prevent household flooding, are connected to the bottom of gutter systems, catching water that falls off the roof instead of having it flow into the stormwater system.

“Not everybody is aware of this, but rainwater barrels can greatly benefit homeowners,” Mike Ramsey of the Westmont Water Division said. “Not only can you save money by using rainwater for your outdoor watering needs, but it can also help property owners prevent flooding.”

“They were a little surprised but they wanted to be supportive,” Lenihan said.

The Peace Corps, a volunteer service, supplied her and other volunteers with a monthly allowance, she said.

“They give us a living allowance on a monthly basis but it’s based on a local pay rate,” she said. “It was around $230 to $250 a month.”

Diane Lenihan, Ashley Lenihan’s mother, said she wasn’t surprised her daughter decided to join the Peace Corps.

“As a mother, I was most impressed on the life lessons she learned that as a parent I would never be able to teach her,” Diane Lenihan said. “I was totally in awe of what she

was accomplishing. She was dedicated to it, I’m very proud of her.”

Diane Lenihan said parents want their kids close but over the years, she’s become very grateful for Skype.

“It’s not the same as being able to reach out and hug your child, but it certainly helped being able to see and talk to her halfway around the world,” she said.

Although she said three years abroad helped her grow as a person, Lenihan said now she’s just looking forward to getting back into the swing of things in Westmont.

“I want some time to adjust to the U.S. for at least the next year or two,” Lenihan said. “I want to work in the public or nonprofit sector related to social community or youth development for empowering at risk and underserved populations.”

8LETTERS Illinois Chamber head pushes pension reform To the Editor: Taxpayers should be watching with great interest the ongoing work of the special committee of the Illinois General Assembly wrestling with the tough, but essential issue of pension reform.

While we are encouraged by early reports of the committee’s work, it does not dent the frustration of millions of Illinoisans who believe the time for reform was long, long ago.

However, taxpayers should also be well aware that a large number of Illinois legislators have already stood up for them by supporting strong pension reform legislation. They have taken the tough vote to restore economic sanity to the state’s finances by voting for meaningful bills. Unfortunately, too many of their colleagues to date have taken the easy way out and we are still awaiting passage of a reform bill.

Senate GOP Leader Christine Radogno, Sen. Michael Connelly, Rep. Natalie Manley, Rep. Emily McAsey, Rep. Darlene Senger and Rep. Ron Sandack all deserve immense credit for voting for real pension reform.

They have voted for billions of dollars of savings for current

taxpayers and future generations. Illinois simply cannot return to fiscal stability without stabilizing the worst-funded pension system in the nation.

These legislators recognize this reality and acted responsibly on behalf of their constituents.

As our unemployment rate continues as the second highest in the nation, taxpayers are right to question our legislature’s ability to address the critical issues facing our state.

But remember, many individual legislators like those above have already stood up. They simply need more help.

Reflecting on children and domestic violence To the Editor: Right now, there are three children residing in DuPage County who must live with the effects of domestic violence-turned-homicide for the rest of their lives.

On July 19, a Downers Grove man killed his wife and then turned the knife he used on himself. An 11-year-old daughter was left to deal with the trauma.

Only a week later, an Addison man bludgeoned his wife to

death and attempted to kill one of his two stepsons who tried to intervene.

No one can predict the devastating effect the murders will have on these young lives.

At Family Shelter Service, we see the effects of domestic violence on children every day.

Growing up in a violent home is a traumatic experience that can affect a child’s life, growth and development.

To address the unique needs of these children, Family Shelter developed an extensive program for kids who have repeatedly witnessed domestic violence. Our individual, family and group counseling services help children deal with the effects of trauma.

It is our experience that in at least half of homes where domestic violence occurs, children are present. Children typically make up 50 to 60 percent of our shelter residents.

No one can predict what the outcome will be for the children in Downers Grove and Addison. Tragedies like this are an unfortunate reminder that domestic violence exists in every town, no matter the socioeconomic status or demographic.

DOWNERS GROVE – Every time Kathryn Basco visits her parents in Madison, Wis., she sees a new Little Free Library pop up on a residential block.

“They probably have about two to three within a mile of their home,” she said. “And I thought it would be a perfect thing to have here in Downers Grove. Downers Grove has that sense of community that reminds me very much of Madison, and the neighborhoods are similar. I just thought it would fit in.”

The decorative, enclosed book exchanges are slightly larger than a birdhouse, mounted on a wooden post, often in a front yard. Any passerby is invited to take, return or donate a book. The grassroots movement has downloadable plans on how to build the Little Free Library on its website, but many design their own shelf.

“The thought that someone at the end of the block could take a walk up to the Little Free Library and pick up a free book to read is endearing to me,” she said.

Kathryn’s husband, John, designed and built their Little Free Library, the first in Downers Grove. The family stocked it with books and mounted it in the front yard of their home this month.

“We’re hoping that if we built one that other people would get the same idea and put it in their neighborhood, too,” she said.

Kathryn added she doesn’t want the Little Free Library to be a destination for unwanted books – it is supposed to promote literacy, after all.

“We don’t want it to be books you might sell in a garage sale, or books that everybody may have already read,” she said. “We want to keep a mix. I put some of my favorite books that I’ve had for over 15 years in there because I’m not going to read them again, and I’d like to share them with other people.

“We have had a lot of people walk by our house and stop and look in the library. Some people have taken books, some people have dropped off books.”

John already has started thinking of ideas for their next Little Free Library, this one with two levels: a bottom shelf for children’s books and a top shelf for the rest.

He said he probably will give away the current Little Free Library to someone else.

“Already, a lot of people have been asking me to build them for them,” he said.

The Basco’s current, cheerful Little Free Library is in the shape of a house. It’s painted red, white a blue with decorative wood molding.

Once installed, each owner of a Little Free Library can visit littlefreelibrary.org to register their book exchange, receive a plaque with a charter number, brochures and other materials. The website also includes a map showing where each of the several thousand Little Free Libraries are located.

Let property owners vote Now that Governor Quinn has said he will sign into law the bill authorizing DuPage County to charge a stormwater fee, it is interesting to recall that the Illinois General Assembly passed this bill for Peoria County and DuPage County. The bill provides an opportunity for Peoria County voters to vote on whether or not to permit their county to charge property owners the fee. But the bill does not give DuPage property owners the same power. Of course our County Board could let us vote on this. What are the odds of that happening?

Old farmhouses Something needs to be done about the three dilapidated farm houses at the south entrance to Lisle’s Main Street. These dilapidated farmhouses have been there for at least 15 years, and nothing’s been to done to improve them. WESTMONT – Mayslake Village and the Westmont Lions Club are joining together to host a free hearing and diabetes testing program Aug. 14.

The hearing bus and diabetes bus will be at Mayslake Village, 1801 35th St., from 9 a.m. to noon in the main parking lot. The annual program is funded by the proceed raised at the Lions Club’s Candy Day sale.

“Members of the Westmont Lions Club will be on hand that morning to help and answer questions,” Westmont Lions member and Village Trustee Jim Addington said.

“We are always looking for new members and will be glad to answer questions about the club and the community services we offer.”

Jennifer M. Smith, were found on July 19 was reportedly burglarized last week.

Family members cleaning the home, 6211 Park Ave., after the apparent murder-suicide told police the residence was in order July 29. The next day, they noticed someone had placed a fold-out step stool underneath a ceiling attic hatch, and an exterior door had been forced open.

A Craftsman sawzall and a Stihl chain saw, both still in the box, were reported missing, along with a new toolbox. All the knives, forks and spoons were also reported missing from the kitchen drawer. The tools and toolbox were valued at $200 each, the silverware was valued at $100 and damage to the door was estimated at $40.

The bodies of Thomas and Jennifer Smith were found in the home during a well-being at the request of a family member at 2 p.m. July 19. Police said that Thomas Smith stabbed his wife to death before turning the knife on himself.

2013 RECYCLING EXTRAVAGANZA TO PRECEDE REFUSE AMNESTY DAY The Village of Downers Grove and the Downers Grove Park District will host a Recycling Extravaganza on Saturday, September 28, 2013, from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Village of Downers Grove Public Works Facility, 5101 Walnut Avenue. This event is open to residents of DuPage County and does not include businesses or not-for-profit organizations. This event preceeds the 2013 Refuse Amnesty Day (scheduled for the week of September 30 on your regular garbage day) to help keep recycleables out of the landfills.

Vehicles must enter the Recycling Extravaganza site from Curtiss Street, via northbound Walnut Avenue or Belmont Road. Access from eastbound Curtiss Street and southbound Walnut Avenue will be restricted. Volunteers will direct traffic in the lot and assist customers dropping off their donations. NOTE: Vehicles must be in line by 1:00 p.m to be served. Vehicles arriving after 1:00 p.m. will be turned away.

Peter Roskam: No rules violated on trip to Taiwan you expect a high level of scrutiny, so it’s not a surprise,” Roskam told Shaw Media after Monday’s Peter opening. “I’ve Roskam been pleased to completely cooperate [with the Ethics Committee]. In October 2011, Roskam and his wife visited Taiwan on an officially connected fact-finding trip to learn about Taiwanese culture as well as economic and security ties between the U.S. and Taiwan. Roskam’s daughter also was teaching in Taiwan at the time.

The eight-day trip cost more than $25,000, according to the Office of Congressional Ethics. The majority of the

cost was related to travel to and within Taiwan, Roskam spokeswoman Stephanie Gengo said.

The Office of Congressional Ethics alleged the Taiwan trip may have been an impermissible gift because of the involvement with the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States, which is the de facto Taiwanese Embassy.

Roskam and his representatives said the Chinese Cultural University in Taipei sponsored the trip and is an appropriate private sponsor.

Roskam’s camp also said the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office was a necessary and expected liaison for the trip, and the involvement was disclosed to the Ethics Committee before the trip.

The Ethics Committee will announce its course of action

by Sept. 11, at which point Roskam believes he will be cleared of any wrongdoing.

“That’s my hope and my expectation,” he said.

The House Ethics Committee is investigating a claim made by the Office of Congressional Ethics, an independent watchdog agency, that Roskam’s trip was improperly funded by the Taiwanese government.

Citing the fact that the Ethics Committee approved the trip before he and his wife left for Taiwan, and the fact that the Office of Congressional Ethics hasn’t unearthed any new information that wasn’t initially vetted by the Ethics Committee, Roskam said he anticipates the investigation will prove no rules were violated.

Charm and character highlight Public Landing Public Landing is a restaurant rich in character.

Its charming setting and classic upscale fare surely are enough to attract those with an appetite, but the history ingrained in the Lockport eatery’s limestone walls truly sets it apart.

It inhabits the first level of the historic Gaylord Building, a limestone warehouse constructed in 1838, that played a vital role in one of the great enterprises of the 19th century: the digging of the 96-mile-long Illinois & Michigan Canal.

Nestled between the canal, a railway and a park, the building provides a local history lesson to Public Landing diners. Murals on the walls of the building’s entrance explain its significance to mid-1800s trade, while engraved stones just outside the restaurant’s patio offer a glimpse into how the waterway was born. President Abraham Lincoln played a big role.

My companion and I spent a recent summer night at Public Landing. Dinner came first, followed by a relaxing walk through Lincoln Landing Park, a terrace along the canal just south of the Gaylord Building.

Inside, diners are treated to a lovely window view of the restaurant patio, park and terrace overlooking the canal. Of course, you get the sense you’re dining in history: Wooden beams line the restaurant ceiling, and the limestone bricks show through to the interior.

After we were seated, a veteran server greeted us kindly before bringing out warm pretzel bread with our appetizer, the House Made Chips.

The app, tossed with Romano cheese and sea salt and flanked by a ranch dipping sauce, was both tasty and a bargain.

For our entrees, I went with the Char Broiled Pork Tenderloin, while my companion opted for the Blackened Mahi Mahi, served over a roasted red pepper coulis and complemented with zucchini and yellow squash.

Eric Davis packs his days to get ready for football season at University of St. Francis

JOLIET – Eric Davis knows how to pack a schedule.

While some college students look forward to a summer break, there has been little down time for Davis this summer.

“I work from 6 to 2:30, and when I get home, I shower and take a little nap, then I work out from 5 to 6:30 or 7,” the Eric Davis Westmont High School graduate said. “That’s mainly what I’ve been doing this summer.”

That’s just Davis’ solo itinerary. In addition to his routine, he has joined his University of St. Francis football teammates to run stairs at Joliet Memorial Stadium twice a week, he said.

Davis has also worked on his agility and quickness in preparation for the upcoming football season. The Saints’ camp starts today and Davis is ready to prove that all his offseason work served a purpose.

“I feel like I wasn’t able to show what I can do last season,” said Davis, who missed two games due to injury. “I played a lot last year, but I feel I have a lot to prove at camp this year and that’s what I want to do.”

Hard work in the offseason should help Davis show what he’s got. The fact that he knows what position he’ll be playing should help, too.

senior. He’s been on the move during his time at USF, too, but is finally entrenched on the defensive line.

“I’ve switched positions here three times,” Davis said. “They recruited me as a defensive end, but my freshman year they switched me to tight end. The following spring I switched to fullback and then in the middle of that spring I switched to defense.

It’s been tough. I kind of miss

getting the ball in my hands, but you can never turn down the opportunity to hit someone on every play.”

Now a junior, Davis has been part of some highs and lows with the Saints. During his 2010 redshirt year in which he didn’t play, the team went 7-4. The Saints followed that up with a 10-3 season before going 6-5 last fall.

Davis has high hopes for himself and his team this sea-

son.

“I finished with 20 tackles last year and this year I want to get 40 or 50 tackles and prove to the coaches that I need to be on the field,” Davis said. “As far as a team, last year was a little down but this year I think we’re going to be good. We have a lot of athletes on both sides of the ball. We want to contend for the playoffs and a conference championship, too.”

The power conference CCIW football emerges as a premier D-III league

By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com North Central College’s football team has won or tied for a conference title the past seven seasons.

But head coach John Thorne knows maintaining that kind of success in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin will only get harder.

“I think the conference has gotten more and more competitive,” said Thorne, who is heading into his 12th season at NCC. “The coaches in place are having good success recruiting people and everybody is competitive. Nobody wants the next program to get ahead of them.”

That’s easier said than done.

During Thorne’s tenure, six of the eight schools in the CCIW have won or taken a share of the conference title.

North Central and Wheaton College have won outright titles while Augustana, Elmhurst, Illinois Wesleyan and Carthage have tied for titles.

Wheaton College head coach Mike Swider has spent nearly 30 years coaching in the CCIW and has seen the overall competition get better in the NCAA Division III conference.

“The conference has always been strong, but from top to bottom it has gotten stronger,” Swider said. “From top to bottom, the conference is as good as there is in the country.

If you are picking the four or five top conferences, no doubt the CCIW is in there.”

To gauge just how high the level of play is, Swider points to a specific area. As a conference, CCIW teams are 16-1 in the first round of the playoffs since 2001.

“That tells you a lot,” he said. “Our conference always wins the first playoff game and that gives you credibility.”

In terms of recruiting, CCIW schools compete with other Division II and III schools, NAIA institutions and players that receive walk-on offers from Division I schools. The competition for players can be fierce, but Division III schools are looking for a different type of student-athlete than the Division I scholarship athlete.

“I think one of the things that I set off to do once I took the program over was to have excellence not only on the football field, but not to sacrifice the academic model,” said first-year Elmhurst College coach Joe Adam. “We’re not going to compromise academics for guys that can play the game well.”

The schools in the CCIW are private institutions, which adds another speed bump on the recruiting trail.

NAIA schools can offer scholarships, and the smaller state schools in Wisconsin, such as perennial D-III contender Wisconsin-Whitewater, are public institutions with lower tuition rates.

ELMHURST – Last season Elmhurst College football made the playoffs for the first time in school history.

The Bluejays won a share of the CCIW title for the first time since 1980 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III playoffs.

After the season coach Tim Lester moved on to Syracuse to be the quarterbacks coach and Joe Adam, who was the defensive coordinator, replaced him. Among the challenges facing Adam in his first season is replacing running back Scottie Williams, who won the Gagliardi Award for best player in Division III last season.

SUBURBAN LIFE: What did it mean to you to take over as head coach?

JOE ADAM: Dream come true. It really has been. It’s been such a blessing and it’s been fun putting it together for me and the coaching staff trying to raise the bar for what we did last year.

SL: How do you follow up such a successful year like last year?

JA: I think you start by understanding that that’s how the culture is here now and will continue to be. When we set up to put this thing together it was with this very point in mind that we would have a

team that would be able to contend on a consistent basis, not just a one-hit wonder. It took a bit longer than we would like, but we are to the point where we expect to win.

SL: How has the transition from assistant to head coach been?

JA: I think for me it was an easy transition because I’ve been the recruiting coordinator for almost five seasons now. I was very in tune to what we were looking for, the characteristics and traits we were looking for. We scour the country for not just anybody, but the right people that fit what we’re going to do here.

SL: How do you recruit for a Division III program?

JA: One of the things that I put a big onus on is work ethic here. I expect and I demand work ethic from the players.

It’s going to be work ethic that gets you into successful situations, whether it be here in college or in life. We measure that in a lot of different ways. We measure that in academics, in face-to-face communications

and in interactions with our support staff.

SL: What makes the CCIW such a competitive conference?

JA: It’s Illinois football and it’s the partnership that our league has with our area high school coaches who understand the level of football here and understand the type of players we’re trying to recruit collectively. Plus, the location in the big part of the midwest here where we’re close to major metropolitan areas and a few hour drive from major cities. I think that’s an attraction to kids.

SL: Is there anything you’ve tried to change since you took over?

JA: The thing that identifies this program is called blue collar mentality. It’s on every piece of paper we hand out.

BCM is on every article we issue from a team standpoint.

It’s what our identifying mark is this year. It’s teaching kids what the blue collar mentality stands for.

SL: How has the program changed since you joined in 2007?

JA: It was a very much different culture. This is a complete 180. It’s enjoyable. It’s fun to challenge people and the kids have responded. I give a lot of credit to our kids here. They work like no other group in any level of football I’ve coached.

Playing in the championship game of the Orland Park Tournament during the July 4 weekend, the Downers Grove Rebels 18U softball team took second place after a 6-5 defeat to the Flossmoor Hurricanes.

The Rebels trailed 6-2 entering the top of the seventh inning, but scored three runs in the top of the frame to put a scare into the Hurricanes.

In the semifinals, the Rebels enjoyed the other side of a close game as they topped the Frankfort Fusion 3-2.

After a rocky start to the season, the Chicago Red Stars stayed in the hunt for a National Women’s Soccer League playoff berth with a 3-1 win over Seattle Reign FC Saturday at the Lisle-Benedictine University Sports Complex.

Facing U.S. Women’s National Team players and Reign standouts Hope Solo and Megan Rapinoe, Chicago (7-7-5) got on the board first when Sonja Fuss scored on a penalty kick in the 11th minute of the game. The Reign pulled even on a penalty kick in the 27th minute, but the Red Stars added two more goals against Solo.

Solo attempted to clear the ball late in the first half, but it hit Inka Grings in the chest and she settled it before firing the ball into the back of the net in the 41st minute. Grings virtually sealed the win when she scored off a Jen Hoy feed in the 71st minute.
