OUT AND ABOUT Lauzen plans Porky Picnic AURORA – Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen will host the 19th annual Chris Lauzen’s Porky Picnic from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at FVPD Vaughan Athletic Center, 2121 W. Indian Trail, Aurora, which is just east of Orchard Road in Aurora.

Auditions at Steel Beam Theatre ST. CHARLES – Steel Beam Theatre in downtown St. Charles has announced auditions for children ages 9 through 16 for the opening show of its 13th season, “The Emperor’s New Clothes” (a musical) from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the theater, 111 W. GOP gubernatorial candidates meet with voters in Elburn

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com ELBURN – Four Republican gubernatorial candidates – Dan Rutherford, Bill Brady, Kirk Dillard and Bruce Rauner – highlighted their platforms for the 2014 state governor race when they stopped in Elburn on Sunday evening.

The candidates were among many Republicans who attended the annual Western Kane County Republican Organization fundraiser at Lions Park. Dennis Ryan, chairman of the organization, said funds raised Sunday would go toward supporting the Illinois Republican party as a whole, rather than individual candidates.

Among the gubernatorial candidates’ priorities in the upcoming election season are job creation and solving the pension crisis.

Rutherford, the Illinois State Treasurer, said Sunday his platform is simple.

“My priority is jobs, jobs, jobs,” he said. “Everything else we do is secondary today other than jobs.”

He said his plan for bolstering job creation is to help business

owners cut through the “bureaucracy of state government.”

As far as solving the state’s nearly $100 billion in unfunded pension liabilities, Rutherford said pension reforms need to be done “fairly and substantively.”

Other candidates, including Dillard, a state senator, also weighed in on pension reform.

He said if he were governor, the legislature would not be able to do anything until they found a solution to the state’s unfunded pensions.

“I voted for [House Speaker Michael Madigan’s] bill,” he said. “While it’s not perfect, it works.”

Madigan’s proposal would reduce the state’s pension costs by about $187 billion over 30 years, according to published reports.

Brady, also a state senator, ran four years ago on the Republican ticket against Gov. Pat Quinn. He said he considers himself a fiscal conservative who has a track record of opposing tax increases.

He said his goals if elected include cutting government spending, pension reform, paying down the state’s bills, creating jobs and implementing term limits.

Brady said one facet of pen-

sion reform should include re-assessing cost-of-living wage increases to more accurately reflect market conditions. Once pension reform is in place, he said, the state will be in more viable financial position, which will help create jobs.

“Once we merchandize the state properly, we can start being proactive in selling all that we have,” he said.

Rauner said he’s running in his first political race because “our state is in terrible shape.”

He said the state struggles with high unemployment, school deterioration, high taxes and businesses heading to other states.

“Career politicians failed at fixing the problem and union bosses are running Springfield for their own benefit,” he said.

“I’m an independent person. I just want to get things done.”

His goals if elected include improving the state’s business climate and creating jobs; making government more transparent and efficient; making sure education is a top priority; and implementing term limits.

Rauner said his business background as a venture capitalist will help run government more like a business.

The show also featured an armored ballistics vehicle owned by the Kane County Sheriff’s SWAT Team, as well as a demonstration on how the SWAT team uses a flash bomb to gain a tactical advantage in a dangerous situation. Crowds also gathered to watch a Lifestar helicopter demonstrate a landing.

Some got to see firsthand how sirens and emergency lights worked, while others tried on firefighter uniforms.

NORTH AURORA – It took about a year, but Jason Rinella restored his 1966 Plymouth Fury to look as close to an original Chicago police car as possible, right down to the original 1966 city sticker on the windshield.

Rinella, a Glendale Heights police officer on disability leave, displayed the blue and white car alongside more than a dozen other older police cars during the 16th annual Chicagoland Emergency Vehicle Show on Saturday during North Aurora Days.

The show featured about 100 emergency and police vehicles, said Dave Weaver, who organizes the show. He said

Rinella rattled off the names of about a dozen friends who had cars on display Saturday. He said they all own and restore their own police cars independently, but periodically get together to display them at shows. He said many of them are “car people” to begin with, but also have a background in law enforcement.

“It’s just a fun hobby,” said Luke Hartigan, a retired chief of staff for the Illinois Department of Corrections. He had his restored 1973 Dodge Polara on display near Rinella’s.

Woods-Daly duel highlights quarterfinals

By KEVIN SHEPKE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – In years past, if you saw the two names “Woods” and “Daly” at the top of a golf tournament leaderboard, it was a heated battle on the PGA Tour.

But this is a local rivalry, notably at the St. Charles Men’s Golf Tournament, between defending champion Matt Daly and 2011 winner Jon Woods.

In match play Sunday as part of the quarterfinals at Pottawatomie Golf Course, Daly got the better of Woods – just barely – and advanced to next weekend’s semifinal round with a 1-up victory in 20 holes over his friend.

“That was the closest match I’ve ever played in my life, and I have the utmost respect for Jon,” Daly said. “He

is grinder and we both grinded it out.”

Facing elimination and the opportunity to defend his title in next week’s round, Daly was down two holes with two to play, but he found his niche just in time to pull out the win.

“I was in panic mode,” Daly said.

“But I made an amazing bunker shot on the second hole … what can I say, I’m freaking beat and I’ve never gone 20 holes.”

Daly started his round rather routinely, but things started to swing to the dark side on the back nine and his ‘B’ game started to creep up.

“I just could not find the fairways,” he said. “I was having trouble even with four irons and five irons to find the fairways and just couldn’t do it and I had to scramble.”

It wasn’t until the final two holes,

Nos. 17 and 18, when Daly officially made his comeback to force the extra match play.

“I won 18 and that got it back all square,” Daly said. “I hit a six iron out of the trees from about 150 [yards] and rode it. He made six and I made five and kept it going on to the next hole. It was just amazing.”

Weather didn’t play much of a factor in Daly’s game as he was treated with sunshine, mid-70s temperatures and very little wind, but he did have a little trouble reading the greens.

“The brightness caused that a little but I couldn’t ask for anything better than this,” Daly said. “If this is the worst thing that happened to me, I’m very happy with that.”

In other championship match play, David Lanciotti will face Daly

in the semifinals as he defeated Brian Charles, 2 up, while Chris Jones moved on with a 4-and-3 victory over St. Charles East product Richard Geier. The final quarterfinal of the day involved another East graduate in Sean Lenchner, who lost a close 2-and-1 decision to Chris Thomas.

Daly, who hopes that the worst is behind him now, hopes to take the tournament championship and is confident he can do so.

“I’m going to win the show,” Daly said. “But I’m not going to think that far ahead. I’m thinking first tee shot, first hole [next week]. I need to defend this [title] so I can’t get too far ahead of myself. It’s got to come one shot at a time and that’s going to be my approach.”

ST. CHARLES – Advancing past the championship flight match-play opener of the St. Charles Men’s Golf Tournament appeared on Brian Charles’ Saturday agenda.

The perennial tournament contender simply checked it off the list sooner than he expected.

Charles’ 7-and-6 victory against Mike Heithoff earned him a second-round berth Sunday at Pottawatomie Golf Course. It also lengthened his Saturday afternoon.

“Hook up with the family. Converge on the pool,” Charles said. “They were expecting a much later arrival home today. But we’ll see. I need a nap. I’ve got some work to do.”

Defending champion and top seed Matt Daly also struck quickly and early, topping Eliot Kaufman, 9 and 7. His front nine included three successive birdies on Nos. 5 through 7.

“They were long, undulating putts, so it kind of caught him off-guard and I kind of took command of the match from there,” Daly said.

His driver, with a new, lighter shaft, helped Daly stay in position to comfortably reach greens. He uncorked a 320-yard tee shot on No. 9 and drove the second green at the beginning of his second loop through the nine-hole course.

The trip didn’t extend much beyond that.

Most other matches in the championship flight were more-tightly contested, namely Jon Woods’ 1-up victory against 2012 runner-up Garrett Patten in a meeting to determine who would face Daly on Sunday.

Woods, the event’s 2011 champion, won with a twoputt par on 18. Patten’s par putt from the fringe lipped out.

“It was the hardest lip-out I’ve ever seen,” said Richard Geier, who moved over to watch the match after defeating fellow St. Charles East alumnus Nick Maze, 3-up.

Woods trailed by one hole with two to play but closed with two pars. He credited his calmness and strategy to “keep everything in front of me” as he opposed Patten, who Woods concedes is consistently longer off the tee.

“It was a fantastic finish with a lot of lead changes, which was pretty cool,” Woods said. “More than anything, I was happy that I stuck in there and held it together.”

The day began with a pair of upsets in the lower flights, as No. 16 Ed Murzinski defeated top-seeded Rod Stablein, 3 and 1, in a B-flight opener. A short while later, the course buzzed with news of another 16-over-1 triumph, with Steve Mitchell turning the trick in C-flight with a 2-and-1 victory against Jim Sonin.

Second-round tee times began at 7 a.m. Sunday, and the

tournament will maintain an earlier flavor from here on out.

No golfer dare risk looking ahead to the date just yet, but each flight final is scheduled for bright and early Aug. 11, the final day of the third weekend of tournament play.

That’s 7 a.m. (D), 7:10 (C), 7:20 (B), 7:30 (A) and 7:40 (championship).

“It’s better [in the morning]. It’s better. It’s more fun,” said first-time participant Sean Lenchner, a first-round championship flight winner and East product who plays at Elmhurst College. “You get the true – I don’t know. It’s just fun. I like playing early.

The hard part is just getting up early.”

That shouldn’t be the case this time around. The biggest obstacle might just be managing the anticipation.

Dear Abby: My mother and I were close growing up. However, when I was in college she abandoned the family (my siblings were in high school and elementary school) for her much younger boyfriend.

Since then, our relationship has been strained, particularly since I learned she used to tell her then-husband she was visiting me when she was carrying on her affair. After that, I learned about additional lies she had told me throughout my childhood.

I’m married now and have two young children.

My mother has never apologized for her actions to anyone and thinks we should just “get over it.”

Because so much has come out about her, I want to protect my children from being hurt by her the way I was.

I can’t tell her outright that I don’t want much to do with her for fear it will send her into an “episode,” and I don’t want my kids caught in the crossfire. If I try to sugar-coat what needs to be said, she won’t get it. Bridge is full of “truisms,” but there always seem to be exceptions to these adages. However, this deal features one with a remarkable record of reliability.

What is it?

South is in three no-trump.

West leads the diamond king.

What should happen, assuming West keeps plugging away at diamonds?

North’s takeout double was very light. South’s three notrump promised 13-15 points with diamonds held and, in principle, denied a four-card major; it was a realistic choice.

After South ducked the first two rounds of diamonds, West could have shifted to clubs to defeat the contract. But that was hardly obvious. It was normal to continue with the diamond four, his lowest being a suit-preference signal for clubs. After declarer discarded a club from the dummy, what should East have thrown?

At the table, East pitched a heart. Now South ran the heart 10 and cashed her four heart winners. What should East have thrown this time?

East broke a key rule for a second time when she discarded a spade. That allowed South to take four spade tricks and nine in all.

East forgot to keep equal length with the dummy. While the board retained four cards in each major, East had to do the same, discarding clubs. Then three no-trump would have failed.
