By MARI GRIGALIUNAS mgrigaliunas@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – When three Chicago-area historians decided to spend a day exploring a local stretch of the original Route 66, they stumbled upon long-forgotten stories that demanded retelling.

“We keep running into these great stories, and how can you not tell them?” independent journalist Maria R. Traska said.

She, and two geographers – Joseph Kubal and Keith Yearman – decided to write a guidebook to the metro Chicago span of Route 66 from its origin in Chicago to Joliet.

With one story in particular, they felt compelled to give a happy ending.

On the west edge of Elm Lawn Memorial Park, under dirt and grass, lies Bruno Schustek. A headstone does not mark his forgotten grave.

“Here’s an early hero who has no recognition right now,” said Yearman, an assistant professor of geography at College of DuPage.

Schustek died July 6, 1930, trying to rescue the heiress of Peter Fahrney’s pharmaceutical fortune. “Madcap” Merry Fahrney departed Stinson Airport, in what was at the time considered La Grange but now is the Vulcan Materials Company quarry in McCook. The 20-year-old Cough Syrup Heiress, as she sometimes was called, decided July 6 would be as good a day as any to try skydiving.

The Bruno Schustek Memorial Fund is just one of the side projects to emerge from the book venture, but the team feels strongly about it. It hopes to have a proper headstone and dedication ceremony by the 85th anniversary of his death in July 2015.

Intrigued by the physical remains of the original 1926 Route 66 landscape, the researchers think background stories like Schustek’s are just as valuable.

“This is what geography is all about in my opinion,” Kubal said. “It’s man’s impact on the landscape.”

“It’s one of the stories of courage along the route, I think,” Kubal said.

According the trio’s research, more than once a memorial service of planes showered Schustek’s grave in flowers shortly after his death. Unsure if an original grave marker fell victim to anti-German sentiment during World War II, or possibly vandals, Yearman, Kubal and Traska are determined to give Schustek’s grave a proper headstone.

“He’d been one of those flying aces during World War I,” Traska said.

Green Fest returns to Elmhurst

By MARI GRIGALIUNAS mgrigaliunas@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – After a twoyear hiatus, Green Fest returns to Elmhurst with more than a few educational activities for kids and adults.

“We’re trying to make [education] a little more of a focus than in the past,” said Matt Poole, Elmhurst Park District’s Environmental and Athletics program manager.

Still, he kept the concerns of Elmhurst residents in mind when choosing the programming.

Her recipes, while original, often mix cultural staples. When the cronut craze

struck the U.S., she got to work mixing up her own “gurnut,” as she calls it. The croissant-doughnut hybrid exemplifies the type of fusion creations Hafeez loves to make.

Although she still consid-

ers her shop a bakery first, Hafeez won’t let that label limit her creativity. The store has begun to make mango ice cream in house and plans to start selling fresh yogurt drinks, which Hafeez said are healthier than smoothies.

Lunch sandwiches on their homemade breads also are on the list of future items.

“It’s more about what the customer needs,” Hafeez said.

From custom wedding cakes to cupcake bouquets, Gür Sweets caters to the customer’s wish. If ordered in advance, the bakery can accommodate special dietary needs such as vegan, nondairy or gluten-free options.

Hafeez likes to think her storefront bakery offers customers the chance to sample tastes from around the world without leaving their neighborhood.

“I would encourage people to come and take an adventure,” Hafeez said.

ELMHURST – A software engineer-turned-pastry chef, the owner of Gür Sweets in Elmhurst likes to challenge labels and put a twist on the expected.

“Being in America, we’re such a huge melting pot of the whole world,” said the bakery’s head pastry chef and owner, Rubina Hafeez.

“It just makes sense to have a fusion bakery.”

Hafeez opened the fusion bakery after more than a decade working with computers, not bread. She grew up cooking with her mother and grandmother. In 2005, she earned her culinary degree, and in November 2012, Gür Sweets was born.

“We believe in wholesome nutrition,” Hafeez said.

The bakery’s name, “gür,” is an Indian word meaning “sugar in its purest form.”

Elmhurst College summer tutoring program expands

The program is offered through the Elmhurst College Niebuhr Center for Faith and Action, which focuses on social action and community service. Last year, the reading program allowed Elmhurst students of all majors to tutor, but this year, tutors are limited to education majors or graduates.

“Last year, they had good intentions, but this year, it’s definitely focused on reading instruction,” Gerald said.

Each program is led by a site coordinator and seven tutors. While attendance varies due to summer schedules, the tutor to student ratio consistently is 1-to-3 or lower.

“I think the fact that we’re offering it for free is so awesome, because our tutors are so qualified,” Berwyn site coordinator and Elmhurst College student Rachel Harley said.

Her tutoring team includes a speech pathology major and special education major, in addition to general education majors. The program also received a grant to provide 10 iPads at each site.

Still, Gerald credits a different aspect of the program for its success.

“We want to include the parents as much as possible,” she said.

The Bensenville site especially works with parents.

While most summer programs are scheduled during the day for parents to drop off their children while they work or run errands, the Elmhurst College program is offered twice a week in the evening.

with literacy because English is not their first language. It’s a trend she sees growing in Bensenville and other communities.

“I had 17 kids in my class and out of 17, five different languages were spoken,” said Gerald about her fourth-grade class in Willow Springs this past school year.

While she believes schools are working to provide support for those learning English, she sees the free summer program as a necessary resource for the community. She is working toward an English as a Second Language (ESL) endorsement.

Some of her tutors already have them or are bilingual.

Students at the Berwyn site, Unity Lutheran Church, largely speak English, but Harley said the parent support still is an important part.

As the summer winds down, so does the program’s sophomore year, but Harley and Gerald believe the summer program is essential to making sure students are prepared for the next school year by involving their parents and the community in their success.

“With this program, the family piece is still huge,” Gerald said.

8NEWS BRIEFS Elmhurst teens win Girl Scouts award ELMHURST – Girl Scouts of the USA recently awarded three Elmhurst teens the organization’s most prestigious award.

Anneliese Chiappetta, Miranda Deane and Melissa Rohman earned their Girl Scout Gold Awards by completing a series of requirements, including the implementation of a significant community service project.

For her project Chiappetta, 17, collected spare change for three months to raise more than $3,000. She visited the Gulf Coast and used the money she raised to buy supplies and help with home renovations for those affected

by Hurricane Katrina.

Deane, 17, collected more than 250 dresses for York High School’s first prom dress resale event. She also organized donations from local merchants for dry cleaning,

tuxedo rental and flower coupons.

Rohman, 18, organized the Lara Academy Book Drive in coordination with Friends of Elmhurst. She collected more than 2,000 books for students at Lara Academy on Chicago’s South Side.

The girls needed to dedicate a minimum of 65 hours to their service projects that fulfilled a need in the local or global community.

ELMHURST – A local musician will speak in August at the Elmhurst Historical Museum about his career as a young musician, including his experience opening for The Beatles.

In 1965, Elmhurst resident Gary Goldberg, front man for the Cave Dwellers, performed for thousands of people in what was then called Comiskey Park before The Beatles

took the stage.

Recently, Numero Group, a Chicago record label dedicated to preserving music history by reissuing vinyl compilations, rediscovered Goldberg.

Rob Sevier, founder of the label, will join Goldberg.

ELMHURST – District 205 Superintendent Dave Pruneau has decided to name an interim principal at Bryan Middle School for the upcoming school year.

Current principal John Glimco left Thursday to take another principal position at Pleasantdale Middle School. Melissa Couch will take over as interim principal at Bryan for a year, with the goal of naming a permanent principal by spring 2014.

Couch, a former middle school teacher, served as assistant principal at Bryan last year and assistant principal at Churchville the previous four years.

Pruneau said in an email sent to parents of Bryan students Friday that he decided to name an interim principal because he felt time was a significant restraint to finding a permanent replacement before school begins Aug. 19.

ELMHURST – Families are invited to create their own collages with the help of an artist at the Elmhurst Art Museum.

Leslie Baum’s work is featured in “FRAGMENT: Sampling the Modern,” an exhibit at the museum. Participants will create a masterpiece in a manner similar to Baum’s process. She’ll lead aspiring artists through the museum’s galleries to draw their own versions of exhibited works.

Families then will cut out their favorite fragments of the drawings and reassemble them into a family collage.

Elmhurst College receives food composting grant ELMHURST – For more than a year, Elmhurst College has been composting food scraps from its dining operation, but thanks to a state grant, the school will increase its efforts this fall.

According to the Elmhurst College website, the school received the $28,782 grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity’s competitive Food Scrap Composting Grant Program. Along with a $7,000 contribution by the college, the money will go toward the purchase of a pow-

Peter Cunningham will join Churchville after teaching at Zion Central Middle School for six years. There, he served as the Social Studies Department chairman for the past three years. He also led districtwide initiatives and worked closely with the District 6 superintendent on developing a new teacher evaluation plan.

A thumbs up to everyone who helped put on the Elmhurst Cycling Classic on July 19. The race was a big draw for the community and a sight to behold. To the Editor: It is nice that we honor our country on patriotic holidays like Memorial Day and Fourth of July by displaying the American flag, and of course some places in the city like Spring Street have a permanent flag display. However, there is a proper way to display our flag and in improper way. The improper way is a sign of disrespect for it, and our country.

There is a very easy to find and read website that can be found by searching: proper care and treatment of the U.S. flag. The website covers many aspects of the subject.

Unfortunately, there are presently many infractions of these regulations in the local area, particularly flags on the ground. Because of the Fourth of July holiday, I picked up two in the last couple of days.

Let’s give our most important national symbol the care and respect that it deserves. It is very important, and certainly not that difficult.

from our leaders, which most Americans do, they are all one in the same.

First, securing our borders is a matter of national security and is the most basic responsibility of our federal government. It has nothing to do with legal immigration laws and everything to do with stopping foreign nationals from entering our country illegally.

Second, what is wrong with our current immigration laws?

Our government will not enforce them, period! If our government was as zealous about making sure we tracked illegal aliens as it was about redistributing wealth, we would not have a single illegal in this country.

Third, why do we want to reward foreign nationals that broke our laws to be here with a “Path to Citizenship?” We are told it is because so many have been here so long it would be inhumane to anything less.

It is time to wake up, America.

We have seen this movie before and it does not end well for those of us pulling the wagon. Reagan was fooled by Mazzoli-Simpson in 1986, resulting in complete amnesty for millions of new Democrat voters.

The goal today is no different than in 1986: Instantly create 15 million new Democrat voters. In both cases, it was the productive American worker that got screwed.

You see, the cost for these new Democrats is directly passed on in the form of food stamps, welfare, Medicare and too many more taxpayer (53 percent) funded goodies.

A better way to grieve

More on strollers

I hope somebody can help those young people who are perpetuating the memory of their friend with those plastic cups over 294 stuffed inside the fencing. If everybody did that, it would be a terrible mess over the tollway there.

In the Suburban Life, there was an article about the Salt Creek butterfly farm, and they have a bereavement program.

If I had the money, I would gather up the people who are doing that and have a little bereavement ceremony with the butterflies. They also need to take down those tattered and discolored and dirty ribbons that are still up and down Wolf Road. I understand the loss of somebody. I’ve lost many people and family pets.

I’m sorry for their loss.

Regarding the lady who takes her child in the stroller to the craft fairs in La Grange and claims that it only takes up the space of another person, it does not. The width and the depth of the stroller takes up much more space. And children are not the people who buy things at those fairs. It’s just making things more congested.

Bad place for a speed trap I think it’s extremely disrespectful when I see the police in La Grange Park and Brookfield doing surveillance or using a radar gun while parked in a cemetery or a funeral home parking lot. I look at those places as peaceful and restful, and they should be given some respect. I’m sure people who are visiting a funeral home for arrangements or the cemetery for a loved one could benefit from a place to do that.

I hope La Grange village officials do a better job in investigating the new tenants or property owners of the old YMCA space than they did when they wanted a mixed-use facility built back in the 2000s. Had that gone through, there would have been a bunch of one-bedroom, one-bath apartments, probably populated with multiple people from families, and the schools would’ve been dragged down and it would’ve been a blight. It was a blessing that the guy sued the park district, which kept that from going through.

Underpass needs work I am a Lisle resident who regularly takes the Burlington Northern train from the Lisle train station, and I’m calling to Sound Off about the pedestrian underpass there.

It was probably dismantled over a year ago, and there’s no signs of work being done.

It’s always dark, dingy and damp, with puddles of dirty water everywhere when you walk through it. It gets on your shoes and your clothes.

I’m just wondering, what’s the plan? When will there be some movement on it to improve upon its current state of affairs?

Gov. Pat Quinn plans to sign a bill that allows DuPage County to create its own stormwater utility fee.

The bill passed both state legislative houses May 16 and was sent to the governor June 14, according to spokesman Dave Blanchette.

He said Quinn supports the bill and plans to sign it before the Aug. 16 deadline.

DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin said the county stormwater fee would be more equitable than the current method of using property taxes to fund stormwater infrastructure, because a fee would be based on the amount of stormwater displaced by a property.

“If you’re a big developer and you put down a large, 50,000-square-feet parking lot of concrete, and you displace a lot of water to your neighbor downstream, you’ll pay more,” Cronin said when the House passed the bill. “If you take steps to install semipermeable pavers and rain barrels at home, your fee will be a lot less; you’ll get credit for it. It’s the ultimate in responsible behavior policy.”

The bill requires a twoyear planning period including feasibility studies, public hearings and public outreach and education before the implementation of any fee. During the process, the county board also would have to vote whether to create the fee.

If approved, the fee would present a new cost for property-owning nonprofits in DuPage County. Nonprofits

are exempt from property taxes but not fees, DuPage County Board Stormwater Committee Chairman James Zay said.

It’s a situation that has frustrated churches and nonprofit organizations in Downers Grove, where village officials approved a municipal stormwater fee earlier this year.

Church and nonprofit leaders there say the fee has cut into their ability to provide services and assistance in the community, and have organized petitions and made public comments at village council meetings this spring and summer. That focus soon might shift to the county.

Zay said churches and other nonprofits would not be exempt from any possible stormwater utility from the county, but that officials would discuss opportunities for credits for using permeable pavers, rain barrels, retention ponds and other measures that reduce stormwater run-off.

His easy-going personality, work ethic in his forty-four year career at Commonwealth Edison, and his devotion to family and faith in and service to the Lord, are cherished memories of his long life.

ROBERT JAMES FINAN Robert James Finan, age 84, of Elmhurst since 1963, and part-time resident of Incline Village, Nevada since 1990, died July 29, 2013, in Barrington, after a short battle with pulmonary disease. He was born on April 8, 1929, in Chicago.

Husband of Carol Jean Finan nee Helmer since 1958 (celebrating 55 years on May 17, 2013); father of Christopher (Heidi) Finan and Jan Marie (Dan) Hoeltgen; grandfather of Nicholas and Dylan Finan and Eve and Sophie Hoeltgen; brother of Elizabeth “Betty” Mc Cabe; brotherin-law of Joyce Finan and Nancy Ziegle. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brother, John Finan, sister, Margaret Donohue, father, Leo Finan and mother, Mary Finan.

Bob graduated from St. Mel's High School in Chicago, in 1947, attended Northwestern & DePaul Universities in Chicago, and was honorably discharged from the Army in May 1951. He worked as a radio news announcer in Streator, DeKalb and Kankakee, where he later moved to become the court reporter at the Kankakee Daily Journal. He joined the staff at the Chicago Tribune in February of 1963, where he held several editorial positions. He retired after 30 years of service to the Tribune in December 1993, as the front page News Editor. One of his career highlights was a private jet trip to Washington, D.C. to pick up the Watergate Tape Transcripts,

up ga ap Transcripts, and editing them for publication on the return trip. He also worked parttime for 28 years with H&R Block during the tax season. He was an avid reader of a wide range of subjects, a model railroad enthusiast, a Boy Scout Troop Committee Chairman for his son's troop and a dedicated parishioner of Immaculate Conception Church in Elmhurst. He enjoyed traveling with his family, whether it was a camping trip throughout North America, or a family trip to Spain and Italy to celebrate his 50th wedding anniversary. He enjoyed spending summers at Lake Tahoe, where he developed many friendships, especially his morning Breakfast Club.

Wine and dine with small plates at Salt Creek Wine Bar In a fast-food land of heaping piles of french fries, 32-ounce soda buckets and extra-large pizza slices, it’s nice to find a place where you can eat small and eat slow. At the Salt Creek Wine Bar, you can do just that.

On a recent Friday night, I traveled to Brookfield in anticipation of a nice meal at the wine bar, and got just what I was hoping for: several small plates to be enjoyed over a good glass of wine – in my case, sangria.

Located just off the Brookfield train station near the corner of Grand Boulevard and Prairie Avenue, the Salt Creek Wine Bar has been a staple of the town’s restaurant community for many years.

The atmosphere inside is relaxed and comfortable, filled with plenty of tables, a long bar and a performance area. Work by local visual artists is displayed on the walls, and music plays quietly in the background.

My dining companion and I arrived about 6 p.m. and momentarily were surprised to be the only ones in the restaurant. However, other diners slowly trickled in, and the place was filling quickly by the time we left about 8:30 p.m.

I suspect the reason for the later rush was a young woman with a guitar who was setting up in a corner as we departed. I wish I had stayed on for the music, because it’s a standard feature of the wine bar, with local acts playing everything from folk to jazz.

The live music is a big draw, I’ve been told, and it pairs perfectly with the ambiance, food and drink.

Because it’s a wine bar, wine definitely is the focus here. If you’re not a wine fan, there’s still a good beer and cocktail list, but with so many options and a knowledgeable staff, anyone should be able to find a wine they like – or several to try in a flight.

Bar should be a destination where you go to sit a while, enjoy a good meal and conversation, and not worry about bringing home a doggie bag. You’re there to take it in, eat leisurely and enjoy the overall experience.

I absolutely enjoyed my experience and plan to return soon. With a menu of tapas pizza, creative sandwiches and small plates made for sharing, there’s plenty still to try. When I return, I’ll check the musical offering first and bring as many friends as I can get to accompany me.

Good food is good, but good food accompanied by good friends, good music and good conversation is something more – it’s a feast.

Promising position Changing from QB to tight end boosts York grad’s hope of taking field for Illinois

How did you pick Illinois?

Growing up I just knew that I really wanted to play ball and I told my dad I wanted to play at a Big Ten school.

He was a graduate assistant at Michigan State in the early ’90s. He had the whole experience from a coaching standpoint. Illinois was just the best offer. They offered me a walk-on spot. I talked to a few smaller schools and Ivy League schools, but Illinois was the best fit. I think from a student-athlete standpoint that it has the whole package.

For an Elmhurst kid to come here and get a chance to play for a Big Ten school is pretty special.

What is your best York memory?

What made you switch to tight end?

A couple guys went down and I was always one of the bigger quarterbacks on the roster. I told the coaches I’d go anywhere they wanted me to go. It opens up more opportunities on special teams and maybe in short yardage packages. I wrestled in high school so I’m a little more physical than your average quarterback.

What was the hardest part about the transition?

Adapting to the physicality. No one really hits you with the red jersey on. Driving your feet when you block is all new territory for me. There’s still a lot of work to be done with me and a lot of other guys in the fall.

Named to the Big Ten Conference all-freshman team, Allen also was a first-team freshman All-American by the Football Writers Association of American as well as the Sporting News.

He is the No. 1 right guard on the Spartans’ depth chart heading into preseason camp.

Doug Diedrick College: Northwestern High school: Montini (Woodridge) Class: Sophomore Position: Superback An all-state linebacker in high school, Diedrick has transitioned to the other side of the ball in college to become a utility offensive player for Northwestern.

O’Toole also rushed for a pair of touchdowns and finished second on the team in total offense. Last season, he set the program’s single-game record for completion percentage when he completed 83.9 percent of his passes (26-of-31) against Charleston Southern. As one of the most experienced QBs on the roster, O’Toole once again could see plenty of playing time.

By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com MINNEAPOLIS – Andrew Harte doesn’t plan on taking the traditional route of most college freshmen.

On campus at the University of Minnesota since June 10, the Downers Grove resident and former Montini football player plans to be on the field when the Gophers kick off their football season Aug. 29 against UNLV. If things go according to plan and Harte avoids sitting out the season with a redshirt, he could be the one doing the kicking in that game.

Jordan Wettstein handled Minnesota’s field goal duties last season, but he has graduated. Harte is one of three freshman competing for playing time as a kicker, and he intends to win that battle.

What can make me stand out is I can make the kick every time. If my range is 50 yards and someone else’s is 55 but I make it every time, I feel confident I’ll be the guy they turn to. As long as I make my kicks, I should be fine. My high school long was 54 yards with no wind. Right now, I’m hitting from 50 both ways on the field.

What have you been doing since you arrived on campus?

I’ve been lifting and doing conditioning every morning and afternoon, and kicking with all the snappers and holders every day. Camp starts Aug. 2, so I’m getting my feet wet now so I’m ready to go.

What changes have you noticed between high school and college football?

Walsh played in seven contests last fall for the Hawkeyes, including a start against Northwestern. Playing both left and right guard, the 6-foot-4, 290-pounder also saw time on special teams. A returning letterwinner, Walsh is expected to be in the mix for serious playing time this fall.

Do you think playing at Montini and playing in big-time games will help you?

I think it definitely can.

You don’t really know what a situation is like until you’re in it. At Montini, we had big crowds and we played in big games. Now you’ve got to do it in front of 50,000 people every week, but I think I can do it. At Montini, I was in some high-pressure situations, and I think that will prepare me for what I have to do at Minnesota.

Cougars capture Summer Slam SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA The Elmhurst Cougar Blue 14U baseball team finished its season July 14 by winning the St. Louis Summer Slam.

The Cougars went 4-1 during the weekend to take home the champion-

ship trophy. They cruised to a 4-0 victory over the Redbirds on July 12. The Cougars suffered their only loss on Saturday to the Breese Heat by a score of 8-6 before bouncing back to defeat the Salem Tigers, 9-4. Next, the Cougars defeated the St. Louis Hawks,

8-5. In the final, they overcame a seven-run deficit against the Hawks to win the championship game, 10-9.

The Cougars also won the WSBL American League Green Division and finished the season with a 36-14 overall record.

Elmhurst Swim Team claims 40 medals SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA The Elmhurst Swim Team won a regional championship July 21 at Evanston High School.
