Pets benefit from Salvation Army’s nutrition program

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – On Wednesday, Ralph Mueller of St. Charles was expecting his usual delivery of meals from a volunteer with The Salvation Army’s Golden Diners Senior Nutrition program.

But this delivery came with an extra perk – a small bag of food for his dog, Giusseppe, a maltese-poodle mix.

“I appreciated the dog food,” he said, noting that it’s one trip to a store he won’t have to make.

This week, The Salvation Army launched its latest initiative by delivering pet food to 111 seniors and their 187 pets. A $2,500 grant from Banfield Charitable Trust helped launch the program, allowing Salvation Army volunteers to deliver pet food to seniors four times a year.

Maj. Ken Nicolai, director of the Golden Diners Program, said a few years ago, a couple of volunteers raised concerns because they saw seniors sharing some of their meals with their pets.

“In this one case, it was a cat, and the cat looked pretty hungry. And the senior was at

risk of malnutrition,” he said.

“That kind of alerted us.”

Nicolai said for the past two years, The Salvation Army has distributed pet food around Christmas time to seniors, which they’ll continue to do, but the recent grant helped them expand the frequency of the program.

He said The Salvation Army conducted a survey of the seniors asking whether they had pets, and if they had trouble feeding or caring for their pets. He said more than 100 seniors responded that they needed extra help feeding their pets.

“People say, ‘Why don’t they just give their animal to somebody else?,’ ” Nicolai said. “You’re talking about people who live alone, and without that pet, they’d be even more lonely than they already are. The pets are just such good companions for them.”

He said pets also can keep seniors alert by giving them some responsibility.

“We’re just hearing back from seniors [about] how grateful they are,” Nicolai said. “They really do care about their pets. Sometimes, they might even put their pets

before themselves.”

Townsend explains decision to leave STC

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Outgoing City Administrator Brian Townsend was ready in April to renew his current employment agreement with the same terms and conditions, but delays opened the door for him to take a position in Schaumburg.

“Once that opportunity presents itself, it’s something you need to consider,” Townsend said of the open village manager position in Schaumburg.

Mayor Ray Rogina said residents have asked him why the city Brian let Townsend Townsend leave.

“I didn’t let anybody leave,” Rogina said, noting it was Townsend’s choice. “We Ray wanted him to Rogina stay here.”

The Kane County Chronicle obtained emails between Townsend; his attorney, Charles Radovich; Rogina; and the city’s attorney, John McGuirk; about the contract talks through a Freedom of Information Act request. The documents show Townsend sought a four-year renewal and that severance was an issue.

Under his contract inked in 2009, Townsend earned about $217,000, including salary, travel allowance and health insurance.

Initially, Townsend said, he didn’t have concerns about Rogina wanting an opportunity to review his contract in greater detail and consult with legal counsel and the

City Council. He said Rogina had assured him before the April 9 election that he admired his skills and abilities and had nothing to worry about regarding his job security.

But as more time passed – the St. Charles City Council approved three 30-day contract extensions since early May – and the subject of severance came up, Townsend said he began to have questions.

According to a May 30 email from Radovich to McGuirk, a six-month severance package was being proposed if certain conditions were not met in 2017, the end of the proposed contract. Radovich noted Townsend’s current agreement called for a 12-month severance package if he was terminated without cause during the four-year term.

“In the back of my mind, I have to ask myself if this process isn’t moving along expeditiously, is there an issue?” Townsend said. “I guess I asked myself at one point why would [severance] be an issue that requires this process to be prolonged if they’re not planning to execute that at some point. … Those were some of the questions I started asking myself after about 30 days of going back and forth.”

Rogina – who said he also was inquisitive about the city’s salary structure and how bonuses are determined – said the city had a legitimate, competitive offer on the table.

“From my perspective, the council wasn’t hanging anything up,” Rogina said.

Third Ward Alderman Bill Turner said he is happy for Townsend, but is disappointed he is leaving. Townsend’s salary was well in line for somebody administering a

Know more An email dated May 30 from Brian Townsend’s attorney, Charles Radovich, to the city’s attorney, John McGuirk, summarized proposed severance conditions: “… the new four year agreement would be patterned after the existing contract except that at the end of the four years (April 30, 2017), if the parties had not reached a renewal agreement at that time, there would be an automatic 30-day extension of the agreement. During this period, the parties would determine if a new agreement is forthcoming.

If no agreement is reached at the end of the 30-day extension, that

employment is terminated and a six-month severance package commences. As with the current agreement, if Brian’s employment were curtailed, without cause, during the 4-year term, he would be entitled to a 12-month severance package.

“Since there is a considerable reduction in the severance period under this plan, Brian would want the severance package to include a provision which is afforded to certain city employee currently; namely, that the severance package would include all unused sick leave, up to a maximum of four hundred fifty (450) hours.”

$42 million city budget, and a merit pay increase was “fully justified” given his track record, Turner said of other issues that arose.

“I think negotiations could have been a lot cleaner and a lot quicker,” Turner said.

“Things are what they are, and I’m sure that Brian is going to do an excellent job in Schaumburg.”

First Ward Alderman Ron Silkaitis said the back-andforth is part of negotiations.

Although he would have liked

Townsend to stay, he said, he has no problem with him taking another job.

“Since we were negotiating, he has every right to pursue other employment opportunities,” Silkaitis said. “I’m happy for him.”

Rogina said he considers Townsend a friend and wishes him nothing but the best.

“I don’t think the city of St. Charles drove him out of town,” the mayor said.

Although Townsend is set to begin work in Schaumburg at the end of the month, he still will have ties in St. Charles. His family will explore relocating but not immediately, he said, noting his three children soon will start the school year at St. Charles East High School, Wredling Middle School and Lincoln Elementary School. His wife recently began working at Lincoln, a job she intends to keep, he said.

Because he is leaving voluntarily, Townsend said, he is not pursuing any severance from St. Charles.

Rogina said he aims to have an interim city administrator named by the end of August.

“It’s like a family reunion,” said Mark Gaffino, chairman of the North Aurora Days Committee that is in charge of organizing the summer festival. “You see people there that you only see once a year, and some people who have moved out of town come back for the festival.”

The festival kicks off Friday and runs through Sunday.

Gaffino acknowledged this year’s festival is bittersweet because of the recent passing of former village trustee Max Herwig, who served as the North Aurora Days Committee chairman for many years.

North Aurora village trustees have approved a proclamation declaring Friday to be Max Herwig Day in the village. Herwig died suddenly June 4 at Edward Hospital in Naperville. He was 67.

Herwig’s family will be presented with a plaque honoring him Friday night at the festival site at Clock Tower Plaza, at Randall Road and Oak Street.

The festival will feature old favorites, including the popular emergency vehicle lights and sirens parade, which will begin at 7 p.m. Friday at the Cinemark Tinseltown USA movie theater, at 320 S. Lincolnway, North Aurora,

then head north on Route 31 to John Street. The parade will go past the festival site at Clock Tower Plaza.

Some of the emergency vehicles in the parade will be featured in the Chicagoland Emergency Vehicle Show from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Saturday at Pentair Water and Oberweis Dairy near Interstate 88 and Randall Road, North Aurora.

This is the 16th year of the event, billed as the Midwest’s largest public emergency vehicle show. Organizer Dave Weaver said 200 emergency vehicles will visit North Aurora throughout the weekend.

The Kane County Sheriff’s SWAT team’s armored vehicle are among those that will be in the show.

The SWAT team also will be involved in a demonstration at the show.

In addition, emergency personnel will be part of an extrication demonstration, and a medevac helicopter will be on display. The demonstrations will allow the public to see how firefighters and others respond in an emergency.

“I think that most of the time when there are emergencies, the public doesn’t get a chance to see what is happening up close,” Weaver said.

The parade, in its 31st year, was started by veterinarian Thomas Brooks of the Fox Valley Veterinary Clinic in North Aurora.

“I just enjoy the exposure to people and how they go about enjoying their pets,” Brooks said.

Sunday’s pet parade will help wrap up North Aurora Days. Over the years, Brooks has seen people enter a variety of animals, including dogs, cats, birds, iguanas, ferrets and even horses.

“I’ve seen just about everything and anything,” Brooks said.

Judging will be limited to the first 100 entries, which must be faxed or delivered by 6 p.m. Friday to the Fox Valley Veterinary Clinic, 405 Oak St. Forms are available at www.northauroradays.com.

Schlomann testifies in school merger trial

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Even after testifying for nearly two hours Wednesday, St. Charles School District 303 Superintendent Don Schlomann is expected to take the stand today, making him the last witness in a trial about the reconfiguration of two elementary schools.

Presided by Judge David Akemann, the bench trial is about the legality of the district’s now-implemented plan to merge Davis and Richmond elementary schools’ attendance areas and make them into

K-2 and 3-5 schools, respectively.

Richmond – which repeatedly missed academic benchmarks before the merger – had its adequate yearly progress status “rolled back” after the reconfiguration.

The plaintiffs’ attorney, Timothy Dwyer, has asserted that circumvented No Child Left Behind regulations.

Schlomann, who was called to the stand Wednesday by the plaintiffs as an adverse witness, said the district did not consider Richmond’s AYP status until after the school board voted on the reconfiguration plan.

Schlomann disagreed

with Dwyer’s characterization that Richmond’s failure of AYP was the plan’s catalyst.

“I don’t want to get into semantics,” Schlomann said, launching into the events that led to the plan.

Richmond’s AYP status led to the school offering choice, which resulted in students leaving, he said.

That created a facility issue the district needed to address, he said.

“The regulations are the regulations,” Schlomann said. “…They created a facilities problem I didn’t have to live with.”

“I definitely did not communicate that,” Schlomann said.

Because only schools that use Title I money are subject to sanctions under NCLB, District 303 attorney Rob Swain asked Schlomann why he didn’t divert Title I funds from Richmond and Davis to avoid the consequences of not making AYP. “That would have been game playing,” Schlomann said. “It would have felt immoral.”

Swain is expected to call Schlomann to the stand today as his last witness.

Finance committee recommends approval of funding package; cost estimated at $9M

By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Kane County’s elected leaders have moved closer to finding a way to foot the bill for a project to design and install an electronic court case document management system.

The Kane County Board’s Finance Committee unanimously recommended approval Wednesday of a funding package, crafted by the county’s chief financial officer, to pay for the project, now estimated to cost about $9 million over the next five years.

Under the proposal pre-

sented Wednesday, the county would dedicate more money from its public safety and transit sales tax funds toward the project.

Kane County CFO Joe Onzick said the county already has transferred $1.4 million from the county’s public safety sales tax. And the county in the next two years would transfer an additional $1 million in 2014 and $2 million in 2015 from a transit sales tax contingency fund to help pay for the project.

Onzick told the committee those funds would be replenished by new money coming in annually from the sales tax-

es.

The county previously had pledged about $800,000 a year from the public safety sales tax to the project.

Onzick said the project’s cost includes about $6 million to pay for the design and implementation of the software, and about $400,000 a year to pay a project manager and other information technology professionals to oversee the work.

Officials at the various offices associated with the court system, including the county’s chief judge, state’s attorney, public defender and circuit court clerk, have pushed for

Rover Rescue garage sale to benefit group’s efforts

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com NORTH AURORA – Since its start in 2003, Rover Rescue dog rescue group has saved more than 5,000 dogs from shelters where animals can be euthanized.

Those who go to Rover Rescue’s garage sale, which will run Friday through Saturday, will be able to pick up donated items at bargain prices and support the efforts of the all-volunteer, nonprofit organization.

All proceeds will go to Rover Rescue.

“It is solely going to pay for vet bills,” Grandt said.

Rover Rescue currently has 45 foster families, and it always is looking for more foster homes.

“We’ll never have enough foster families, unfortunately,” Grandt said.

Rover Rescue has saved almost 5,900 dogs since the group was formed. Although she is pleased that so many dogs have been saved, she doesn’t view it as a total success story.

“Yes, we’ve saved a lot of dogs, but until we’re put out of business, it is not really a success story,” Grandt said.

Two area colleges get state grants

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com CAMPTON HILLS – No one was injured in a single-vehicle crash that occurred early Wednesday morning at the intersection of Corron and Burlington roads near Campton Hills.

Campton Hills Police Sgt. Robert Reichardt said the incident occurred shortly before 4 a.m. He said a semitrailer driver was heading south on Burlington Road and was approaching Corron Road when the light at the intersection started to change.

The driver applied his brakes, and the truck began to skid, Reichardt said.

The truck struck and damaged a traffic control box, knocking out power to all the traffic lights at that intersection.

Stop signs were temporarily placed at the intersection until the lights were working again.

Firefighters were called to the scene shortly after the crash to put out a fire, which

No other vehicles were involved, but a witness saw the crash happen while stopped at the intersection, Reichardt said. Fuel spilled onto

the roadway, and a HAZMAT team was called out to help clean the area and keep the fuel from leaking into a nearby creek, he said.

The trucking company, Sunset Garbage Collection, has its own cleanup crew

and was expected to help clear the scene, Reichardt said.

The driver of the semitrailer, Jan Matys, 63, of Glendale Heights was cited for failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Two area colleges received state grants totaling $2.3 million to help fund infrastructure improvements as part of Gov. Pat Quinn’s Illinois Jobs Now! capital construction program.

Judson University in Elgin received $743,885 and Aurora University in Aurora received $1,583,215.

The funds are part of $90 million total set aside this fiscal year through the construction capital program that will not only improved higher education institutions, but also create thousands of construction jobs, according to a news release.

Through the program, private universities have received $200 million to address their capital needs.

Main entrance for forest preserve shifting ST. CHARLES – The main entrance to LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve is moving just a bit west. The move is part of a scheduled construction project to add a parking lot near the Durant House Museum and Pioneer Sholes School, as well as improve access to the facilities within the St. Charles preserve.

Construction will take place Monday through Aug. 23.

The west entrance of the preserve at 37W700 Dean St., St. Charles, (by Creek Bend Nature Center) will remain open during construction and will become the new main entrance for the preserve. Creek Bend Nature Center will remain open.

Portions of preserve roads north of Dean Street will be intermittently closed during the construction project. Impacted roads will have signage indicating possible closures and dates construction work will take place.

Where possible, temporary road detours will be created. Although the roads will generally be open, preserve users might experience occasional, temporary closures to accommodate equipment movement and safety concerns.

Traffic moves to outside lanes over Orchard Bridge Northbound and southbound traffic over the Orchard Bridge will be moved to the outside lanes starting today through Sept. 6, weather permitting, to allow crews access to the center

portion of the bridge.

Two lanes in each direction will be maintained during this portion of the project, according to a news release from the Kane County Division of Transportation.

During construction, it is anticipated the on and off ramps to and from Interstate 88 remain open for motorists’ daily use.

Construction will not impede the use of the bridge for daily travel located between Sullivan Road in Aurora and Oak Street in North Aurora.

Residents are urged to pay attention to the new lane configurations and watch for equipment and workers entering and leaving the work zone.

OPINIONS Where is a fun place to play trivia?

This summer, I’ve found that I’m usually hanging out with the same group of people.

This is completely fine with me, because I love the friends I’m hanging out with. We’ve gone to grad parties together, gone to movies, and every Tuesday night, a consistent group of my friends goes to Stockholm’s in Geneva.

Stockholm’s Tuesdays are some of my favorite nights out with my friends, because they combine all my favorite things – food, friends and intellectual competition.

We go to Stockholm’s every Tuesday for its weekly trivia night. While that might sound lame to my fellow teenagers (and probably some adults), don’t knock it until you’ve tried it.

The setup is rather simple.

Each team, usually the people at your table or area of the bar, get several tiny slips of paper.

The questions are read over a speaker; each team writes its answer and its team name, and hands it in. Questions get progressively harder through the four rounds, and – at the end – there’s a “Jeopardy!”-style bonus question.

So far this summer, I think my team has learned quite a lot.

I’ve learned that Mt. Kilimanjaro is in Tanzania and that 21 states have milk as their official state beverage. I’ve also learned that, as a whole, our team knows very little about who acted in old movies or who won certain Super Bowls. I’ve also realized that when making your wager for the bonus question, betting it all isn’t a good idea – but it is much, much more fun to do.

Though our team has won third place (and a $10 gift certificate) a few times this year, we’re not really there to win. Sure, we take ourselves way to seriously

But, in general, we’re just there to have fun. When I talked to the owner, Michael Olesen, he said that the reason he does it is that it’s just plain fun. Mr. Olesen is usually walking around the tables on Tuesdays, asking if our food is OK and how our team is playing tonight. As a team of teenagers, we really appreciate that.

Our age is usually the main reason why we miss questions.

How are we supposed to know that the “Macarena” came out in 1994? We weren’t alive then.

Although sometimes our age is useful – like knowing about the movie “Lilo & Stitch” or Mario Kart – so you can definitely go if you’re a teenager. Or, if you’re a parent, bring the whole family.

Trivia has been going on at Stockholm’s since February 2012 and happens every Tuesday night at 8:15. It’s free to play, and the questions range from history to medicine to Cindi Lauper. The top three teams get gift certificates, and if you go before the end of the summer, you might get to meet your favorite Kane County Chronicle columnist.

Stockholm’s is a restaurant and microbrewery at 306 W. State St. in downtown Geneva.

A sad day for French language

By LYDIA TOMKIW Foreign Policy Authorities in France have struck yet another “Anglo-Saxon” term from the country’s lexicon and replaced it with a domestic equivalent.

As of this week, the French no longer engage in “le binge drinking” – the proper term in la langue française is now “beuverie express,” literally “fast drinking.”

The French General Commission of Terminology and Neology made the announcement this week, and France 24, an international news site, translated its definition as a “massive consumption of alcohol, usually as part of a group,

designed to cause intoxication in a minimum amount of time.” The French newspaper Le Monde quantified this as having more than four to five drinks in less than two hours – although the news outlet did not specify the type of alcohol or precise portion size. (The French are well-known for weeding out foreign words from their language, with the commission recently swapping the word “hashtag” for “mot-dièse.”)

But this isn’t simply a lighthearted story of overzealous French-language police. The vocabulary change coincides with an increase in binge drinking in France. In March, the French Society for the Study of Alcohol reported

that alcohol-related hospital admissions had risen 30 percent in three years. In May, Le Monde published a piece called “Génération ‘biture express’ ” (biture express is another term for binge drinking), while Le Parisien expressed concern about “Un problème majeur chez les jeunes” – “A major problem among the young.”

An aide to the mayor of Paris told Le Parisien that the City of Light had seen an increase – from 15 percent to 25 percent – in repeated drunkenness in those younger than 18 from 2005 to 2010.

It looks like the country of champagne, cognac and robust reds has a new problem on its hands.

Batavia author talks power of change

After his dream of becoming a professional football player slipped from his grasp, his world started to crumble.

His girlfriend had broken up with him. His pet was dying. Feelings of despair and depression lingered for months and suicidal thoughts started to surface, he said. The pain became physical, causing constant tension in his back.

“I was letting all this just overwhelm me, internalizing it,” he said. “I couldn’t help it.”

But Christian, 43, of Batavia, turned it all around.

His transformation is the subject of his first book, “Behaviors of Change,” which focuses on creating meaningful, positive changes in life. The book is a framework for changing your life in a positive way, he said.

“Long story short, the book is about my experience and the behaviors of change that are required to not only change, but to sustain change for the rest of your life,” he said. “I make a big point about the decision to change. It can be a 50-year-old deciding to go back to college – celebrate that, mark it on the calendar and celebrate it for the rest of your life.”

Christian’s story began about 20 years ago. At 6-feet, 3-inches, Christian was a 310-pound NFL prospect playing for Ball State University in the 1990s. He said his goal of becoming a professional player was his

“My childhood dream was coming to fruition,” he said. “I was just at the top of the world. That was my life. It was all going to happen – all the things I was going to do to help my parents. They were blue-collar; their dads were coal miners. My dad grew up sleeping on a dirt floor in Virginia. I had fully invested my heart in this process.”

And then it happened – a well-known agent had signed him, he said. But as quickly as things started falling into place, they unraveled.

The agent started backpedaling because professional teams weren’t showing as much interest in Christian, despite him being rated a top-30 guard, he said.

Christian decided to turn to his faith, which helped him accept reality. And then he met someone who helped steer him even closer to his faith. That person invited Christian to a Bible study, which happened to take place in the exact same apartment complex – and in the exact same apartment – that Christian had lived in while at Ball State just a year ago, around the time depression took hold, he said.

“It was like a full circle,” he said.

After his second attempt to join a professional football team had failed, Christian decided that those opportunities had surpassed him. But by then, with self-reflection and faith, he said he felt like a different person. So, he changed his focus to losing weight and becoming healthier.

“I lost 10 pounds a week,” he said. “From June to August, I lost 120 pounds.”

His physical transformation, paired with stronger faith and a new attitude, set the foundation for sustainable change that still applies to his life today, he said.

Christian now is an executive for a Fortune 500 company and lives in Batavia with his wife, Sara, and his two daughters, Hanna, 8, and Ellie, 5.

“Behaviors of Change” is his first published book, and he’s planning to sign copies at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, at The Bookstore, 475 N. Main St., Suite 100, Glen Ellyn.

He said he hopes those who read his book are inspired to shift their lives in a more positive direction.

“My hope is that it makes [readers] think about their lives, and the discipline and balance they need to sustain change,” he said.

NORTH AURORA – Walking into the new Golden Egg Pancake House, one might be taken aback by the restaurant’s plain decor.

But what the restaurant lacks in ambiance it more than makes up for in the quality of the food. Formerly known as Randall Crossing restaurant, Golden Egg restaurant, at 459 S. Randall Road in North Aurora, serves breakfast and lunch seven days a week and is owned by the former chef at Randall Crossing restaurant.

Golden Egg offers an array of options, so it took a few minutes for my wife and me to decide what we wanted. I opted for the pancakes topped with fresh strawberries and Ghirardelli chocolate syrup, and my wife chose the cinnamon roll French toast combo.

The first thing that both of us noticed is that the maple syrup arrived nice and hot. We appreciated that as we eagerly poured it over our pancakes and French toast.

I’m sure I could have been far more financially successful if I thought of it as a business.

I’ve never even thought of it in terms of a career or a business.

I love music. You’ll never hear Edgar Winter talking about a farewell tour. I’m in it to the end.

Eric Schelkopf: You performed with your brother, Johnny Winter, last year as part of the Rock ‘N’ Blues Fest. What’s it like being part of this festival?

Edgar Winter: It reminds me of Woodstock. I love those early festivals because they had such a wide variety of acts.

The music was all over the place, as opposed to kind of a packaged show say with three blues guitar players.

ES: How did it change your life?

EW: It changed my entire perspective on music. Back then, I was not that interested in pop or rock. I guess I thought of myself more as a serious musician.

Thankfully, I’ve gotten over that. I’m primarily thought of as a rocker, mainly because of “Frankenstein” being such a heavy instrumental. It’s almost a precursor of heavy metal.

I really love jazz and classical music as well, and part of what I’ve tried to do throughout my career is to play a wide variety of music and to broaden musical horizons.

To me, there’s only two

ES: Being on stage with your brother, how is that experience?

EW: Well, it’s always very emotional. Having grown up together and having learned to play together, Johnny and I have an almost telepathic kind of musical communication.

We know each other so well. He has always been my all-time musical hero, so whenever we get to play together, it’s very emotional.

ES: You were the first musician to strap on a keyboard. Why did you want to do that, just to make yourself more mobile?

EW: It seems like such a sim-

I’ll never forget that moment when I walked out on stage with my keyboard strapped on. Nobody had seen it before, and the crowd just went crazy. It was one of those real rock ‘n’ roll moments.

That gets into the whole story of “Frankenstein.” Back then, I was looking for a song to feature the synthesizer.

Actually, I had written the main riff to “Frankenstein” back when I was playing with Johnny.

Back in those days, I had not recorded an album yet, and nobody even knew Johnny had a brother. He’d do the first part of the set with his blues trio,

and then say, “And now I’m going to bring up my younger brother Edgar.”

And the audience would say, “Oh, wow, there’s two of them!” That riff was just the instrumental that I had devised mainly to just sort of introduce myself and showcase my instrumental talents.

The song ended up on the album “They Only Come Out At Night,” and before we knew it, it was a huge No. 1 hit. If I had any advice to give people who are just starting out, it would be to have fun.

Play the music you enjoy and whatever is closest to your heart. “Frankenstein” is an perfect example of that.

It was just a song that we did for fun.

Geneva band Fargo to play at Concert for a Cure fundraiser

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com It’s been a banner year for the Geneva band Fargo, which last summer won the Geneva Park District’s Battle of the Bands competition and now is playing at Chicago music venues alongside such acts as Said The Whale, a Canadian band.

Fargo, comprised of lead singer/guitarist Ryan Thomas, Robert Donile on guitar, synthesizer and vocals, Brandon Cantwell on bass and David Del Giudice on drums, will perform Friday, Aug. 2, as part of the Paul Ruby Foundation’s seventh annual Concert for a Cure fundraiser at the Arcada Theatre, 105 E. Main St., St. Charles.

The concert will feature former Journey singer Steve Augeri and his band. Also on the bill is local band Noah’s Arcade. The show starts at 8 p.m., and tickets are available at www.oshows. com.

Kane County Chronicle reporter Eric Schelkopf had the chance to talk to Thomas, who will be a sophomore this fall at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, about the show and Fargo’s latest activities.

Eric Schelkopf: So, are you guys pretty excited about being on the bill for the second year in a row?

Ryan Thomas: We’re very excited. And the change of venue was a cool selling point for us, as well. The Arcada is such a historically rich place in terms of the Tri-Cities area.

ES: The band’s name comes from the fact that your parents live on Fargo Boulevard in Geneva, right?

RT: Yeah, as do I, I guess, when I’m not in school.

ES: You guys last year won [the] Geneva Park District’s Battle of the Bands competition, and now are playing at Chicago music venues with Said the Whale, a band that is known pretty well in Canada.

What are you learning from playing with bands of that caliber?

ARTIST Q&A RT: We are seeing the kinds of things that go on behind the scenes that all come together to make a show happen.

ES: Are you surprised at all that you are able to book these shows? Obviously, there is good word of mouth about the band.

RT: Something that we really try to do is play music that’s contemporary, that people would get excited to listen to in 2013.

And I think that helps.

We’re not like some classic rock derivative. Also, at our first shows that we played locally, we were fortunate to have some pretty strong crowds.

ES: So, I guess it’s been a pretty good year for you guys.

Did it all kind of start with you guys winning the Geneva competition?

RT: It’s hard to gauge. I think it’s just that kind of grinding away, continuing to play shows and continuing to reach out to new promoters.

I see a lot of local bands

that are kind of playing the same venues over and over again. We did do that to some extent, but I think it’s important to be contacting new promoters and new venues on a pretty ongoing basis.

I’m ambitious with it. I don’t have any trouble with receiving a “no” from a promoter. I’m still happy with myself if I tried.

ES: What do you think it is about your music that appeals to people?

RT: I don’t know. I think the whole indie rock thing is something that is big right

now.

I think we take elements of that. Those things might be appealing to the younger crowd.

They might hear elements of bands like Radiohead. People also throw around Vampire Weekend as a reference sometimes.

We have some older people who enjoy our music as well because they hear elements of what they were listening to when they were teenagers. And that’s completely accurate, because we listen to plenty of Talking Heads and things like that from the ’80s.

By VINNIE DUBER editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – After last year’s edition of the Summer Sunset 5K was canceled because of extreme heat, many runners had a long wait before they could race in the event again.

But for others – including the eventual champion – the wait was even longer.

Andy Enright, a 30-year-old from Wheaton, turned in the best time during Wednesday’s race in Geneva, crossing the finish line on the Geneva track 16 minutes and 19 seconds after he’d started.

Enright was back in the race for the first time since 2004, when he participated as a college student and finished third. Nine years later, with his wife and two children watching from the stands, he won the race.

“I haven’t been back in a while,” Enright said, “but I’m glad to be back. ... I turned 30 and I wanted to get in shape, so I kind of eyed this race. I’m happy with it.

“This is my third race this summer. The last few years I haven’t raced much at all, but this year I kind of got back in shape and decided to hit the road-race circuit.”

It had been a while away from running for the night’s second-place finisher, Geneva native Andrew Nelson, as well.

“It was awesome. It’s been a while,” Nelson said. “I’ve had a four-, five-month hiatus from running, so I’m just kind of getting back into it. I’m so thankful for this opportunity to run in the hometown and get that feeling again.”

Nelson finished just seven seconds behind Enright with a time of 16:26, but he was happy with his finish and even more excited to be running on the track he ran on throughout his years in high school.

“A little bit nostalgic here,” Nelson said. “A nice trip down memory lane.

“I think I even surprised myself a little bit with how good I felt. It was great to have that competition up

Turnstile report Wednesday’s crowd of 5,198 pushed the Cougars’ season total to 273,904 fans in 48 home games. Kane County attracted 245,360 fans through the same span last season.

Cubs brass will be excited because First baseman Dan Vogelbach keeps reaching base and being productive. The lone Cougar to start in each of the club’s 103 games has either scored a run or had an RBI in each of the past seven games.

Cubs brass will cringe because Defensive woes threatened to derail the Cougars before they embarked on their comeback bid.

If the team’s resurgence is to continue, that cannot be the case.

The closer The “p” word might sound farfetched considering the Cougars’ prolonged slump to start the second half, but this roll of late has put “playoffs” on players’ lips.

“You’ve got to feel that way,” manager Mark Johnson said. “If you don’t feel that way, then there’s no sense of coming to the field, right?”

Cougars showing resilience

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Reliever Stephen Perakslis dubbed Tuesday’s all-bullpen pitching effort a successful turn of “Johnny Wholestaff” while standing outside the Cougars’ clubhouse Wednesday.

Such morning-after eloquence can leave a mark, but this club would just as soon keep quipping. And winning.

Showing no residual flatness from a 13-run loss at Peoria earlier this week, the Cougars secured their second straight victory against Wisconsin with Wednesday’s 6-3 matinee rally. They credit those results to the clean slate they try to embrace each day they walk in the clubhouse.

“What happened in Peoria, that was kind of a big hiccup, but you let it go,” Perakslis said. “Let go of what happened

in the first half. Let go of what happened early in the second half. You’ve just got to let go and make the transformation and hope things fall our way.”

A streak of seven victories in 11 games suddenly leaves the Cougars with faint but growing dreams of the Midwest League playoffs. Cue Jim Mora, not Albert Almora.

Kane County (41-62 overall, 12-25 second half) entered play Wednesday trailing Beloit by 8½ games for the Western Division’s final second-half playoff spot.

Scoreboard watching is futile at this point, which plays right into the hands of a team looking inward during a stretch run that’s starting to look up.

“Just coming to the field daily and being positive and just really grinding out, trying to get better every day at something,” manager Mark

Johnson said. “You go over what you did wrong the day before and you address it and you learn from it, but that’s it.

You’re done with it.

“Just like you try to teach these guys to forget the [atbats] and go play defense, it’s kind of the same thing. It takes time and it takes experience to be able to do it … and I think they’re maturing in that sense to some degree.”

Wisconsin (44-59, 15-23) looked primed to capitalize on four Cougars errors before the bats awoke.

Until the sixth inning, Timber Rattlers starter Tyler Wagner limited the Cougars to Gioskar Amaya’s leadoff single in the first, using a twoseam fastball he commanded on the outer half against right-handed hitters.

Amaya delivered a double to open the sixth and scored on an Almora groundout, cutting

Wisconsin’s lead to 2-1. Rock Shoulders’ double tied the game three batters later.

Shoulders provided the knockout blow – and the final margin – with a solo home run in the eighth, the second leg of back-to-back homers against loser Harvey Martin. Third baseman Jeimer Candelario, batting .228 in the second half entering the game, pulled a two-strike Martin curveball to right for a go-ahead, two-run shot.

“Every player struggles, you know. I’ll just keep working hard, working hard, and things are going to happen,” Candelario said. “Because I’m doing a pretty good job swinging at the ball. You’re going to get more good [results].”

Sounds like perseverance, the theme in the clubhouse lately. The next chance to act on it comes when the series resumes today.

BATAVIA-AURORA CHRISTIAN FOOTBALL 7-ON-7

Batavia, Aurora Christian friendly workout partners

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com AURORA – Two of the area’s premier football programs highlighted the final week of their summer programs Wednesday by using one another as a measuring stick.

Batavia visited Aurora Christian for a 7-on-7 scrimmage Wednesday morning, a natural considering the interconnectivity between the teams’ coaching staffs.

Aurora Christian coach Don Beebe was a contemporary of Batavia coach Dennis Piron’s when Piron attended Batavia and Beebe went to Kaneland, and Beebe also has helped train the sons of Piron and Batavia offensive coordinator Mike Gaspari in the offseason.

“I feel like I have a really good friendship with coach Beebe. We go back to high school,” Piron said. “I’ve known him since I was probably a sophomore, freshman in high school, so 1980, ’79. So Don and I go way back.”

Beebe compared Batavia

to his alma mater, Kaneland, as a quality program in the area that makes for a productive summer workout partner.

Beebe said he and Piron keep in touch regularly despite playing in different conferences and postseason classes.

“We’ll go [to] lunch once or twice a year and just kind of reflect on old things, discuss our programs and what he’s doing, what I’m doing and just feed off each other, which is kind of neat,” Beebe said.

Both coaches have plenty to brag about if they choose.

The Eagles are coming off consecutive IHSA Class 3A state championships, while Piron has yet to lose a regular season game through his first two seasons as Batavia’s head coach.

Piron said the Eagles’ perennially impressive play at the skill positions makes them a worthy adversary in 7-on-7 play.

“This was something we kind of pointed to at the end of the [summer] to try and gauge where we were at as a program, knowing they’re going to be

a state-caliber program every year and knowing their level of competition,” Piron said.

The Bulldogs close their summer program later this week, and Piron likes Batavia’s chances to keep the program’s momentum rolling. He said senior Anthony Thielk is proving to be “uniquely special” in his new role at middle linebacker, and some of the program’s younger players are beginning to step forward.

“We need for the junior class to kind of raise their level of play, and I’m starting to see it with some of their players,” Piron said. “We have a very, very good senior class, and we’re well aware of that, kids who have worked very hard.

And our juniors have worked very hard in the offseason, but it’s a whole other thing to come out here.

“You’ve got to assert yourself, you’ve got to be aggressive, you’ve got to step in and make plays. I don’t know if it’s the right word, but you can not be shy. We’re pleased with I think the growth of a number of our junior players overall in

strengthening our squad.”

Batavia has an obvious advantage in competing against smaller programs such as Aurora Christian since the Bulldogs platoon almost exclusively, whereas many of Aurora Christian’s premier athletes play on both sides of the ball.

Not surprisingly, the Eagles appeared to show fatigue midway through Wednesday’s scrimmage, but Beebe was proud of the team catching a second wind to close the morning strong.

“What I was encouraged about is mentally I thought we came out of it,” Beebe said.

“Everybody’s going to get tired. The teams that mentally can get through that and keep making plays – I thought at the end there we were making some big plays, and that was very encouraging.”

Both teams start the season Aug. 30 at home, with the Bulldogs welcoming Glenbard North and Aurora Christian taking on DuSable.

Teams are allowed to begin preseason practice Aug. 14.

Dore hopes to showcase mobility

Clinton left-hander Tyler Pike, who ranked second in the Midwest League with a 2.14 ERA entering Wednesday, is set to start Monday’s game against the visiting Cougars. A third-round draft pick of the parent Seattle Mariners in 2012, Pike has a 7-3 record and is 3-0 with a 1.07 ERA in seven starts after the All-Star break.

Appropriately, Dore is ready to embrace his second chance at the Midwest League after struggling in his first go-round. He did not play in Kane County while batting .208 in 53 combined games for Fort Wayne the past two seasons. The former San Diego Padres farmhand joined the Cubs organization in a March trade.

“Kane’s nice,” Dore said. “I mean, it’s a lot nicer than a lot of places in the Midwest League. I enjoy it.”

Injuries have limited Dore, 21, to 140 minor league games since the Padres drafted him out of high school in the eighth round in 2010.

He turned down a scholarship offer from Florida State to sign with San Diego, and is optimistic he can harness

his talents if he can stay healthy.

“I can’t really say I’m a power guy or a speed guy. I kind of do a little bit of everything, you know,” Dore said.

“I can move. I’m not a base-clogger.

But I can also pop a few home runs. I just pride myself on my defense and just doing everything right.”

A corner outfielder, Dore also filled in at first base in the Padres system.

Pirate pals: Infielder Giuseppe Papaccio became the first 2013 Cubs draftee to join the Cougars when he was promoted July 4 from Rookie League Mesa (Ariz.).

Hours from his home in Nutley, N.J., Papaccio still spent the holiday – and now his subsequent nights – in the company of a friend.

Sensing his former Seton Hall teammate, St. Charles East product Dan Ditusa, might have lived in the area, Papaccio contacted Ditusa shortly after arriving in Geneva. No sooner than you could check your cellphone inbox, the Ditusas made him a host family guest.

“When I got called up here, I texted Dan and I was like, ‘How far are you from Kane County?’ And he’s like, ‘Ten, 15 minutes. You could live at my

place,’ ” Pappacio said. “I just came over, and his parents were like, ‘You better go get your bags, because we want you to stay here.’ They were more than welcoming. They didn’t even give me another option. It was, ‘You better stay with us.’ It was really cool.”

Center fielder Albert Almora sported a mouthguard for the first time in his career Wednesday, acting on a tip from Under Armor, with which he has an endorsement contract.

“They said they think it would help the performance,” Almora said. “They said it releases your stress levels and is light. … I”m trying to figure it out.”

A handful of defiant teammates asked Almora whether he ever had played organized football before as he soaked the mouthguard before the game. Almora had not.

Kaneland was among the schools she saw during her short-lived officiating career, and she now will get to know the Knights on a much more intimate level, having been approved as Kaneland’s new coach at Monday’s school board meeting.

McCastland, 42, has coached volleyball for 19 years,

including previous varsity gigs in Illinois at Oak Forest, Andrew, Plainfield South and Plainfield North, where she remains a physical education, health and driver’s education teacher.

A Geneva resident, McCastland’s husband, Tim, teaches at Bell-Graham Elementary in St. Charles. She said she was looking to break back into the coaching ranks at a school closer to home, and considered Kaneland a strong match.

“I believe in what their community is doing both in education and in athletics,” McCastland said. “I was attracted

to it being a one-high school district, which was much different than where I was coming from [in Plainfield].”

McCastland has a strong track record at her previous stops, including a 2003 AnKerri drew team that McCastland had a late lead against Joliet Catholic before suffering what she lamented as a “catastrophic” loss that denied her team a trip downstate in a hotly contested supersectional.

“To say you’ve won every place you’ve been is kind of blanketly pompous, but if you go back and search, that’s exactly what has happened,” McCastland said.

McCastland stepped away at Plainfield North in 2009 as she and her husband welcomed their son, Jake, who is now 4.

“It took me three years and five miscarriages to have my son, so when you get that opportunity, that was going to be my only focus. … I wasn’t going to let anything else take that away,” she said.

McCastland, who also has

extensive club coaching experience, already has been around her new team in summer league play, and credited former coach Todd Weimer for building a quality program.

Weimer, still the boys volleyball coach at St. Charles North, stepped down for family reasons this summer.

McCastland said competition will be intense later this month leading up to the season, especially considering her limited familiarity with some of the girls in the program.

“It’s going to be very hard tryouts,” she said.

Offensive line is a work in progress for Bears KEVIN FISHBAIN kfishbain@shawmedia.com BOURBONNAIS – Cory Brandon has not played in an NFL game, yet he was the firstteam left tackle at the beginning of Wednesday’s practice.

Then Eben Britton, who has 15 starts in the past three seasons – most recently at guard – took over as the top left tackle for the majority of practice. Not an ideal look for a team that still has major questions along the offensive line.

Jermon Bushrod remained out of practice with a right calf injury. He is still wearing a protective boot and is considered day-to-day. His backup, Jonathan Scott, had knee soreness and spent the morning with ice wrapped around it.

The shake-ups on the offensive line led to a rough start for the whole offense after a day off. There were pre-snap penalties, and coach Marc Trestman was visibly frustrated with a couple of them.

“You saw there were a bunch of pre-snap penalties that allowed us to look a lot sloppier than we have practiced throughout,” he said.

Trestman did add that things improved as practice went along on the offensive side of the ball.

Other shuffling took place at guard, with James Brown working in at both right and

left spots, mixing in with Kyle Long and Matt Slauson. Aaron Kromer, who serves as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach, said that they are working to find the best group up front to protect Jay Cutler.

“Our goal is to find the best five. When we find the best five, it’ll be obvious,” he said.

“Whether we put them at left guard, right guard, whoever they are, we’ll find them. And we don’t control when that’ll happen. It’ll just happen.”

Next man up: With Tim Jennings excused from practice for personal reasons, and D.J. Williams injured, there was a different look in the nickel package. Zack Bowman was the boundary corner in place of Jennings, with Kelvin Hayden staying in the slot. James Anderson took Williams’ spot at linebacker.

Red-zone success: Near the end of practice, the offense rallied and strung together some touchdowns in red-zone work.

Cutler found Alshon Jeffery for the play of the day, a leaping catch over the middle. He also hit Martellus Bennett and Brandon Marshall for scores.

“Back in the red zone, trying to use our guys, trying to get them to elevate and make plays in space against tight coverage and win the contested throwing battle, so I think that was a good way to end practice,” Trestman said.

season, and Shea McClellin is off to a very solid training camp. He put a fantastic spin move on J’Marcus Webb to get

into the backfield during a passrush drill sand then showed his versatility with a power move to beat Jordan Mills.

Cate Blanchett’s performance lifts Woody Allen’s film ‘Blue Jasmine’

By ANN HORNADAY The Washington Post Are you still kicking yourself for missing Cate Blanchett in the stage version of “A Streetcar Named Desire” in 2009? Well, you’re in luck.

Her Blanche DuBois is in full, addled force in “Blue Jasmine,” Woody Allen’s homage to San Francisco and the epic self-deceptions of Tennessee Williams’ battered heroine.

On second thought, to describe Blanchett as playing Blanche isn’t quite right.

Rather, she’s channeling Blanche’s contemporary Upper East Side iteration, a sad, self-medicating sister under the skin whose rapidly fraying mental state is barely camouflaged under layers of Chanel, carefully coiffed hair and frequent applications of Stolichnaya.

As “Blue Jasmine” opens, Blanchett’s character, Jasmine, is flying to San Francisco to stay with her sister, Ginger (Sally Hawkins), in order to escape troubles with her investment-executive husband, Hal (Alec Baldwin), and begin a new life.

Once in Ginger’s shabby apartment, Jasmine’s already fragile composure begins to crack, her compulsive small talk taking on even more desperate cadences, her memories of happier times – on Park Avenue, in the Hamptons, accepting diamond-encrusted baubles from her adoring husband – beginning ever more insistently to intrude. Following an ingenious structure devised by Allen at his most sharp and alert, “Blue Jasmine” turns out to be as familiar for its rippedfrom-the-headlines topicality as it is for its magnolia-scent-

The beautiful dream, Jasmine recalls in flashbacks, had to do with Hal’s wealth, which she enjoyed while looking the other way as to its provenance (think Madoff). Meanwhile, in San Francisco, Ginger encourages her beautiful, polished sister to join her on depressingly down-market double dates and get a real job, as a dentist’s assistant. Pinched between the competing awful realities of her past and her present, Jasmine begins to resemble a sleek, warily cornered animal, Blanchett’s blade-like cheekbones and expressive mouth only adding to the feral terror she exudes.

“Blue Jasmine” co-stars Bobby Cannavale, Andrew Dice Clay and Louis C.K. but, although Clay in particular is impressive and Peter Sarsgaard is note-perfect as Jasmine’s silky would-be savior, Blanchett owns this movie as thoroughly as her

character owns her delusions.

But are they? Is Jasmine running away from the truth or toward it? “Can you imagine me as an anthropologist?” she nervously asks her seatmate at the beginning of the movie. The intimation is that Jasmine, for all her willful blindness, might be more in tune with her own tribal rituals and realities than any of the blunt-edged working stiffs she’s fallen in with.

“Blue Jasmine” is not a particularly funny movie; Louis C.K. fans expecting his signature wit will be particularly disappointed by his character’s bland and predictable story arc. But there are moments of tough, lacerating humor, such as when Jasmine gives life advice to her two young nephews (“Tip big, boys”) and within seconds has descended into yet one more unhinged monologue (“There are only so many traumas a person can stand before they take to the streets screaming!”).

Some viewers will twig to the twist in Jasmine’s story early on, but no matter. By the time the roots of her neurosis come fully into focus, her descent has cast its own mesmerizing spell. Blanchett’s shattering performance is never less than fully inhabited, even when the persona she’s occupying seems to disintegrate before our eyes. It goes without saying that she’s without a trace of vanity in a production that calls on her to spend most of it with a red nose, mascara-smudged eyes and, finally, a delicate blush-colored blouse that’s conspicuously sodden in the underarms.

Such un-cosmeticized honesty feels like a jolt coming from Allen, who’s lately been more interested in the adventures of attractive American ex-pats abroad and time-traveling fantasies than raw naturalism.

Allen has made a movie that is observant and pleasurable to look at and superbly crafted, which is his wont. But he seems to have shifted his gaze from the hermetic, cosmopolitan world he’s been occupying – whether in London or Spain or France or Italy – and found something more grounded and grave.

“Blue Jasmine” may not be a comeback in any aesthetic or professional sense, but it nevertheless feels like Allen has come back to the psychic space and collective anxieties of the country of his birth and a real world that, for a while there, he seemed to have left behind.

• The three-star rated “Blue Jasmine” is rated PG-13 and runs 98 minutes.

New study doubts fish oil supplements Dear Doctor K: I have risk factors for heart disease. I’ve been dutifully taking fish oil supplements for years to reduce my risk of a heart attack. Now I read that they don’t help. Should I stop taking them?

Dear Reader: Fish oil, loaded with omega-3 fatty acids, has garnered a reputation as an easy way to protect the heart. But a recent study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that fish oil pills don’t reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke in people at increased risk.

The new study focused on about 12,500 people who never had a heart attack or stroke. But they had high blood pressure, a family history of heart disease or other factors that increased their risk. Study participants were randomly divided into two groups.

One group took a daily capsule containing omega-3 fatty acids found in fish. The other group took “dummy” pills that contained olive oil.

During the next five years, about 12 percent of people in each group died or suffered a heart attack, stroke or other heartrelated problem. People who took fish oil did not fare any better

One study rarely settles a controversial question. There are hundreds of studies of fish oil supplements, and they don’t all point in the same direction. This new study was a very strong one, but it can be criticized.

For example, there is evidence that olive oil also is heart-healthy.

If the truth is that both fish oil capsules and olive oil capsules can protect the heart, then perhaps the study would have been more convincing if fish oil were compared to a capsule with a substance not thought to be hearthealthy. Nevertheless, based on this study, I wouldn’t rely on fish oil pills to lower your risk of heart attack and stroke.

However, taking fish oil capsules is not the same thing as eating fish. There is very strong evidence that people who regularly eat fish have lower rates of heart disease. Multiple welldone studies have shown that a diet including fish leads to lower rates of heart disease and stroke.

So, I advise my patients to keep eating fish, especially fatty fish that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Examples of fatty fish include salmon, sardines, mackerel, char and halibut.

You might still decide to take an omega-3 supplement. At low to moderate doses (1,000 milligrams or less per day), this appears to be quite safe. Since fish oil has a mild blood-thinning effect, check with your doctor if you’re also taking a blood thinner as well as fish oil capsules.

In the meantime, stick to proven ways to lower your chance of heart attack and stroke: • Quit smoking.

• Exercise more.

• Eat smaller portions.

• Decrease saturated fats and eliminate trans fats.

• Keep your blood pressure in the normal range, with medicines if needed.

• Lower your LDL cholesterol with medication if needed.

• Ask your doctor if you should take a baby aspirin.

I’ve grown up in a very religious home, and both of my parents want me to wait until I get married. I’m 16 and think that I don’t want to wait five more years before losing my virginity. In this day and age, it’s very hard to stay a virgin. At school, many of my very close friends are sexually active, and when they discuss having sex with their boyfriends, I get jealous and envious.

Although my mom wants me to wait, she said that if I get serious with a guy, she would see to it that I get on the pill and demand that the guy uses condoms.

It’s funny to have a man

’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace in our house, but Mom says she loves him, and she seems happy most of the time.

I guess he is nice, but he has made rules for me to abide by. Some of them I can live with, but one of them I can’t live with, and this has caused a very tense family problem. The rule I will never agree to is that I must eat all of the foods my mom puts on my plate for supper.

My stepfather likes liver and onions, lamb, squash, omelets and other things I find despicable and refuse to eat. This has caused me to be on restriction for a long time.
