sports he’s good at.

During my visit, Tyler was going through his routine training regimen, and then he threw the football around with his dad for a while. His dad, David, competed

in the first World Dwarf Games 30 years ago.

When asked what his goal was he said, “to beat my dad.”

Sergeant back on duty; investigation continues

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA TOWNSHIP – The Kane County Sheriff’s Office sergeant involved in the July 8 fatal shooting of an armed Batavia Township man is back on duty as the Illinois State Police investigation into the incident continues.

The sergeant returned to duty last Thursday after being placed on paid administrative leave after the fatal shooting of Luke Bulzak, 52, in the Heritage West subdivision in Batavia Township.

The sergeant who shot Bulzak is a 20-year veteran of the sheriff’s office.

State police continue to

investigate the shooting.

“The Illinois State Police has not given us a timeline on when they will be done,” Kane County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Pat Gengler said Thursday. Gengler said he could not provide any more details.

According to the sheriff’s office, police said they encountered Bulzak on the roof of his home with a rifle.

suicidal threats.

Police said they tried to get Bulzak to drop the rifle, but he refused and pointed it at the deputies.

The sergeant then shot Bulzak.

No one else was injured in the incident.

Greencastle will host annual rummage sale

WHAT: The St. Charles Swim Team will host tryouts for competitive and non-competitive teams for the 2013-14 short course season, which begins Sept. 9.

District 304 eyes $93M budget for 2013-2014

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva District 304 is proposing a budget of nearly $93 million in revenue with nearly $92 million in expenditures for the 2013-14 school year.

At a presentation this week, Assistant Superintendent for Business Services Donna Oberg offered a summery of the tentative budget. The school board is expected to adopt the budget after a public hearing Aug. 26.

Included in the proposed spending plan is the expectation of a levy increase of 1.5 percent, based on the consumer price index, a decrease in student fees, elimination of the $375,000 Readiness and Emergency Management grant and $20,000 from the Kane County Riverboat grant, which was used for a drug prevention program, Oberg said.

It also figures in an 82 percent reduction in general state aid.

“I don’t know if it’s going to come down that far,” Oberg said. “But that is what I have it at on the budget.”

The proposed budget’s expenditures also includes salary increases per contract agreements, increased costs for insurance and retirement savings, but a decrease in homeless transportation cost.

By the district’s major funds, or divisions in spending, the education fund budget shows $56.3 million in expenditures, revenues of $58.2 million and a surplus of almost $2 million.

Oberg said whatever surplus the district has under budget will be used for abatements.

Operations and maintenance shows spending at $12.2 million with revenue at $10 million, a shortfall of about $2

million that will be covered by reserves, she said.

Another savings will be $1.4 million in retirees’ salaries going away, but hiring to replace them will cost $750,000, Oberg said.

The transportation fund revenue is nearly $7 million, its expenditures are at $3.4 million with a surplus revenue of more than $3.3 million. The surplus is because of the bus buy-back program, she said.

The bus buy-back is an annual contract with a bus sales company where they buy back the buses at the end of the school year for a set amount.

Debt service is $17.3 million in expenses, $15.2 million in revenue for a shortfall of nearly $2.2 million, she said. The district abates or reduces taxes to be levied back to residents to try to keep the debt service at a lower level. Oberg said the goal was to keep it at about $16 million.

Cadence seeks to buy out partner in Delnor campus

By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The parent organization of Delnor Hospital is again seeking to buy out a business partner, this time asking state regulators’ permission to purchase the majority ownership stake held by a developer in a medical office building located on Delnor’s Geneva campus.

Earlier this month, Cadence Health, which was formed in 2011 as a result of the merger of Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield with Delnor, filed a request with the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board to buy out the ownership stake in its medical building at 351 Delnor Drive, held by HC Geneva Partners I LLC, a corporate entity affiliated with Brookfield, Wis.-based

Hammes Co. Hammes partnered with Delnor to construct the building almost a decade ago and now holds an 80 percent ownership stake in the building.

The 81,000-square-foot building is leased to various tenants, with Delnor leasing about 42 percent of the available space, according to documents included with Cadence’s state filing.

About 84 percent of the building’s available space is leased, according to the filed documents.

Cadence would pay about $23 million to buy out Hammes, including the assumption of about $14 million in debt related to the building, according to the filing. Cadence would pay about $8.25 million in cash and an additional $420,000 in fees.

According to the state

Health Facilities Board website, the public has until July 30 to request a public hearing on the matter and has until Sept. 4 to submit written comment on the project to the state board.

The filing does not include an explanation for Cadence’s desire to purchase, or for Hammes’ desire to sell.

Cadence’s request marks the second time in a month that the Winfield-based health care organization has asked the state for permission to buy out a business partner.

In late June, Cadence filed a request to pay $25 million to buy out New York-based ProCure and assume control of the CDH Proton Center in Warrenville.

In that filing, Cadence pointed to ProCure’s “financial restructuring” as justification for that buyout.

Kane County officials mull electrical service upgrade

By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The various offices that support Kane County’s court system may soon begin looking at upgrading their electrical service in order to support upgrading the county’s court-related computer systems.

That could, in turn, potentially add hundreds of thousands of dollars to the cost of designing and installing a new electronic court document system.

A Kane County task force has sought for years to advance a project to create the new court document system, which officials have said is needed to bring the court system up to date and allow for more efficient operations.

Called the Kane County Judicial and Public Safety Technology Task Force, the panel includes representatives of the county’s judiciary, the Kane County Board, Sheriff Pat Perez, State’s Attorney Joe McMahon, Circuit Clerk Tom Hartwell, Public Defender Kelli Childress, lawyers practicing within the county and oth-

ers.

A consultant hired by the county has solicited proposals from software vendors to design and install the system. Those are expected to be received for review in August.

However, in the meantime, some on the task force have raised concerns over the ability of the county’s courthouses to adequately power any new system.

Kane County’s Chief Judge Judith Brawka on Thursday expressed her worries to the task force.

“If we have this wonderful thing, and we can’t plug it in and power it, what have we done?” Brawka said.

Roger Fahnestock, the county’s chief information officer, said the county’s courthouses currently have enough power to meet existing information technology needs.

But he said Brawka’s concerns were not unwarranted.

Fahnestock also noted that, while the courthouses have backup generator power, courtrooms would shut down in the event of a power loss.

Upgrading electrical services in the county’s courtrooms could be costly.

Fahenstock noted that, when the county sought to retrofit an existing courtroom recently for new use, the estimate to fully upgrade the room was $35,000.

County officials noted, however, the price tag would likely be lower as the work would not necessarily be that extensive, and that the price per courtroom would likely be lower, because the county would seek to upgrade all its courtrooms at the same time.

Task force members, including Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen, said the matter was worth discussing.

St. Charles Police Department warns residents of identity theft KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Police Department is reminding residents to be careful with their personal information after it recently received reports of identity theft.

In a news release, police said that in one case, personal information was taken from an employee credit union in another state.

Using that information, the suspects reportedly made fake credit cards and began using them in Kane County.

People can make it diffi-

cult for criminals to obtain their personal information by taking some simple precautions, police said.

Here are some tips: • Shred trash that contains personal information, including charge receipts, credit applications, insurance forms, medical statements, checks and bank statements, expired credit and debit cards, and direct mail credit offers.

• Occasionally check your credit reports by calling Equifax at 800-525-6285, Experian at 888-397-3742 or Trans Union at 800-680-7289.

• Report thefts of wallets

and purses to the local police department and notify your credit card companies, banks and Social Security office as soon as possible.

• Never respond to emails asking you to verify passwords, usernames and other information.

No legitimate company would conduct business that way.

Board member testifies in Richmond, Davis case

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Recently elected St. Charles school board member Edward McNally testified Thursday in the bench trial about the legality of reconfiguring two elementary schools in St. Charles.

The trial, presided by Kane County Judge David Akemann, is scheduled to resume this afternoon.

At issue is St. Charles School District 303’s now-implemented plan to merge the attendance areas of Richmond and Davis elementary schools and turn

the schools into grade-level centers serving grades 3-5 and K-2, respectively.

An appellate court has directed the 16th Judicial Circuit to determine whether the reorganization in 2011 qualified as a school improvement plan under the Illinois School Code.

Timothy Dwyer, the plaintiffs’ attorney, called McNally to the stand Thursday afternoon as an adverse witness.

McNally, a teacher, was elected to the school board in April.

He was questioned for nearly an hour about why he chose to live in Davis Elementary

School’s boundaries, his reaction to the reorganization and the reasons the district gave for the merger.

He was – and is – upset by the plan, he said. He later testified that he briefly considered joining the lawsuit that prompted the trial. The lawsuit was brought forward by several Davis parents. “[The plan] caused a lot of strife that was unnecessary,” McNally said, adding it unnecessarily pitted families against each other.

ment issues at Richmond as reasons for the change.

Robert Swain, an attorney representing District 303, asked McNally if – as a teacher – such enrollment issues resonate with him.

An intense overcrowding would be an issue, McNally said, but not the levels Davis was experiencing. Spending money inefficiently, such as in the case of under-enrollment, also would be a legitimate concern for a school district to address, he said.

He was united in marriage to Nancy Engstrom on May 5, 1962, in Batavia.

Tom had a fulfilled life full of public service. While Tom’s children were young, he served as a Boy Scout troop leader, coached Batavia boy’s baseball and was treasurer of the Congregational Church. Tom began his community service by serving on the board of zoning appeals in Batavia. He then served on the Batavia School Board from 1987 to 1993. Tom was then elected as alderman from 1999 until 2011.

Tom was employed at Fermilab for 30 years. In Tom’s spare time, he enjoyed traveling with his wife, Nancy.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy, of Batavia; two sons, Timothy (Julianne) Schmitz of Batavia and

Scott (Kelly) Schmitz of Roscoe; five grandchildren, Alex, Ryan, Casey, Tylor and Cali Schmitz; three brothers, Donald Schmitz of Lake Geneva, Wis., William (Denise) Schmitz of Bowie, Md., and Gerald (Ellen) Schmitz of St. Charles; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Immigration group seeks Hultgren’s support

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A dozen volunteers and activists for comprehensive immigration reform staged a news conference Thursday in front of the Geneva district office of U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Winfield.

One of the activists, Claire O’Brien, 22, of St. Charles said a bipartisan bill that passed the Senate would create a pathway to citizenship for 11 million people who are already here with their families. But she said it also would crack down on border security and people who hire illegals.

“We are here to tell Rep. Hultgren that we are in support of the immigration bill that is in the house right now,” O’Brien said. “It’s something that I feel we need to act on now, and we can’t really wait because a lot of people’s lives are depending on it. … It seems like a common sense thing to do and should be something easily passed. I’d like to get my representative to represent me.”

O’Brien said Hultgren has not been completely in favor of it, but has not taken a hardline stance. The U.S. Senate approved it, 68-32, in June.

In a prepared statement, Hultgren said everyone can see that our immigration system is not working and in need of serious reform.

“When highly skilled workers are waiting years for green cards after graduating with degrees from publicly funded universities, we end up with hard-working parents just trying to build the American dream for their families without a clear vision of what their children’s future will hold,” Hultgren said. “We need a reform that leaves all Americans in a better place.”

Organizing for Action, a nonprofit group established to support President Barack Obama in achieving the enactment of a national agenda on immigration reform, job growth and gun violence prevention among other goals. The organization has mobilized volunteers across the country to urge support of immigration reform, according to its website, www.barackobama.com.

“I know undocumented people who work hard to support their families, and I think they deserve to be here,” O’Brien said. “I think most people know someone who will be affected by the bill.”

The group heard from Jasna Ostojich, a Realtor who was born in Croatia, and is chairwoman of UpLifting Lives, a nonprofit that creates stronger communities through housing stability. It also heard from Hussein Moomin, who was born in Somalia and works as a taxi driver; and from Nico Carmago, born in Bogota, Colombia, who said he had to drop out of college despite earning a full scholarship, because he was undocumented and could not work to support himself.

Ostojich said immigration reform will invigorate the economy.

“In the United States, most immigrants come to build a life. They do not come to take from the country, but they come with a dream to build a future, to build a life for themselves,” Ostojich said. “Immigrants could come in and start rebuilding our inner cities, our failing properties. … Previously, immigrants were the ones that would come into a neighborhood and revitalize them, and I believe that would be another possibility.”

Moomin recounted how he came to the United States four years ago as a war refugee and now meets undocumented immigrants while driving his cab in Chicago, immigrants who would be helped by immigration reform.

Carmago, who now is legal, said he could have finished school if he could have had a job to pay for his room and board while attending the University of Illinois on a full scholarship.

“If the Dream Act had existed when I was 15, I could have gotten a part-time job, finished college and been more successful in my career … and contribute more to the American economy,” Carmago said. “We need comprehensive immigration reform for people like me and for America as a whole.”

Not too late for Obama’s policy BLOOMBERG NEWS Eight years ago, then-Sen. Barack Obama traveled to Knox College in Galesburg to deliver a big speech about how to ensure that the middle class benefited from the nation’s economic prosperity. On Wednesday, President Obama revisited both the campus and the message. He only had to substitute the word “recovery” for “prosperity.”

To say that a lot has happened in the intervening years would be an understatement. Perhaps most important, the middle class is in worse shape now than it was eight years ago.

The link between higher productivity and wages has been severed, Obama said Wednesday, with the result being that the income of the top 1 percent has nearly quadrupled, while the typical family’s has barely budged. The median household now earns less than it did in 2000.

Few would deny that a thriving middle class is necessary for a healthy economy. Identifying what most needs fixing isn’t that difficult, either.

Obama’s speech named quite a few candidates – improving the education system, retraining out-of-work employees, rebuilding the manufacturing base, lowering health-care costs, cutting higher-education tuition, and upgrading transportation and information

networks.

Yes, we have heard all this before – in 2005 and dozens of times since. But the financial crisis and ensuing recession made it difficult for Obama to put into practice many of the ideas he has frequently talked about. Now, with the economy steadily improving, the United States finally can move away from crisis management and take the longer view.

But there is another factor that has prevented Obama from addressing these issues, of course – Congress. House Republicans are plotting some of the deepest cuts in domestic programs in a generation, on top of more than $2 trillion in reductions over the past two years, as the price for funding government programs and raising the debt ceiling this fall.

Few economists, moreover, support the Republicans’ call for more domestic spending cuts in the current context of rapidly shrinking deficits and tepid economic growth.

Time and again, Obama has laid out reasonable solutions in compelling language.

His challenge is the harder job of wooing Republicans, pressuring business leaders to make his case to Congress and using the trappings of office to lobby lawmakers.

Obama is promising to do all those things now.

It’s never too late.

A lot has been said and yet to be said about the verdict in the Zimmerman/Martin trial.

The facts are a jury of six was chosen and accepted by both the prosecution and the defense.

That is our “system,” and there were only six because Florida law requires 12 jurors only for capital crimes.

Evidence is gathered. Witnesses are called. The jury deliberates, and a verdict is reached. That is the system.

In any trial, one party or the other is not going to like the outcome.

Those who did not like the acquittal verdict in this trial claim the system is flawed and wish to change the “system.” That is, to change it until they get the verdict they seek. That is not how the system works.

wish to repeat that trial until it comes out the way they desire?

Why have those in high government offices weigh in or make comments during and after the verdict?

For example – the president states if he had a son, he would look like Trayvon. Was that a comment based on his personal decision that Zimmerman was already guilty and meant to sway potential jurors?

Then there are the comments from Eric Holder, who consistently forgets that he is the attorney for all Americans and not just a select few.

Tavis Smiley, purportedly a journalist and talk show host who is not supposed to editorialize, states that the system is flawed and needs to be changed. Does he mean changed so verdicts come out the way he wishes them to?

The killings every day and night in Chicago are despicable. They are

not caused by race issues – some statistics show that about 92 percent of black people killed are killed by other black people.

O.J. Simpson was acquitted when many felt he was guilty of killing his white wife and her white companion. I cannot recall the white president or the white attorney general making comments about the verdict.

A majority of Americans feel that the “system” works, possibly not as efficiently as it could, but it does – indeed – work and is proven by these many years and millions of trials.

So, was this trial really an issue of race? Many would like us to think so, and so the embers of race keep burning, never to go away any time soon ... or at all.

The well-being of boomers Those caring for parents are more likely to have health issues

“Don’t be afraid to ask for help,” said Eggleston, executive director of Elderday Center in Batavia. “That job is big, and you don’t have to do it alone. We don’t want you to.”

Last year, she said, the nonprofit agency provided nearly 1,200 hours of free counseling to 340 Kane County residents who are caregivers, mostly members of the baby boomer generation.

Feelings of guilt, stress, depression and anxiety are common among caregivers, she said, noting that can lead to problems elsewhere in their lives, such as marriages.

Caring for their parents is part of the triple whammy some baby boomers – Americans born between 1946 and 1964 – are finding themselves in. Some also are still supporting their children, and their personal health is demanding more of their time as they age.

“You have a population that themselves have some health care issues or a serious illness,” said Nancy Nelson, senior manager of advocacy and community outreach for AARP Illinois. “But at the same time they’re dealing with their parents or in-laws who have health care issues that might be more severe.”

“Adult children 50-plus who work and provide care to a parent are more likely to have fair or poor health than those who do not provide care to their parents,” according to the study.

Nelson estimated that

two-thirds of U.S. families are involved in some kind of caregiving. However, the time spent caregiving could serve as useful preparation for individuals who are getting older, she said.

“That’s an interesting twist with the boomers,” Nelson said. “They’ll probably be more able to address their health issues and retirement issues … because they’ve dealt with their parents.”

For Elburn resident Kay Swift, it was her now-deceased husband who needed care. Henry Swift was 55 and had almost recovered from a quintuple heart bypass when he suffered a massive stroke, she said.

“Talk about panic mode,” the 66-year-old said. “You totally feel overwhelmed.”

The state would have paid her to stay home and take care of her husband, but Swift

said it wasn’t enough to live on, and she had to work in order to have health benefits.

Thankfully, Swift said, she had a job that let her be flexible with her hours.

“It was good that I had my son,” Swift said. “When you have someone in the home with you it helps.”

Eventually, she said, her husband spent time at Elderday, where he had friends and could be more active.

Affordable Care Act could benefit elderly

It operates locations in five Chicago-area communities, expects to open another this summer, is breaking ground on its seventh site, and it has plans for three to four more after that, said Brian Nebel, executive director of the St. Charles location.

“We’re prepared,” O’Higgins said.

Ailment outlook Baby boomers are expected to have their share of health issues. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 50 percent of Americans ages 55 to 64 have high blood pressure, and another 40 percent have some form of cardiovascular disease.

Further, the American Hospital Association reports that six in 10 baby boomers will be dealing with more than one chronic condition by 2030, when the oldest of the generation is 84 and the youngest is 66.

In that time, one in four baby boomers will have diabetes, half will have some kind of arthritis, and more than one-third will be considered obese. Nelson said obesity will be a major health obstacle for boomers.

“They always think

they’ll exercise more after they retire, but they really don’t,” she said. “Sometimes it’s the health problems that keep them from exercising.”

As the adult activity supervisor for the St. Charles Park District, Meghan Papke wants to bring in more baby boomers, she said.

“Everyone deserves leisure and recreation,” she said.

In addition to offering programs at the adult activity center and scheduling trips, the park district provides those 50 and older with exercise opportunities.

A new “50+” walking club has attracted about six regulars, Papke said, noting some might feel safer walking with a group than walking alone.

This fall, she said, the park district plans to offer a “50+” session of its popular all-ages tai chi class. The new class will focus on more linear movements – positions that are better suited for older adults, she said.

As an usher at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark in Geneva, boomer Michael LaRocca not only exercises during work – he might walk the stairs 16 times a day during a game – but he also bikes from home for day games.

The trip is five to six miles one way, he said.

Staying healthy is one concern many baby boomers have.

And although public opinion of the federal health care reform measure known as the Affordable Care Act remains mixed, AARP says the law could significantly benefit older Americans.

The ACA was signed in March 2010 with an aim of making health care more affordable and getting most Americans insured. The law is still not seen favorably by many: A June poll by Kaiser Health Tracking found that unfavorable views of the law still outnumber favorable ones, 43 percent to 35 percent.

But Jennifer Creasey, associate state director of Advocacy and Outreach for AARP Illinois, said older Americans in particular may benefit from it.

“Boomers are in a unique category,” she said. “They really will be affected, but they don’t realize they will be affected. There is a lot out there, but people don’t realize it will help them.”

The Illinois Department of Aging said the law may help boomers who are 50 to 64 who need health care, but are either unable to afford it or are too young for Medicare, Kimberly Parker, communications manager for the department, wrote in an email to Shaw Media.

And for older boomers, the law improved Medicare by making preventive services – including flu shots, mammograms and health screenings – free, she wrote.

There are concerns about costs, though. The America’s

Health Insurance Plans association notes that 2010 estimates from the Congressional Budget Office show the ACA will reduce funding for the benefits of Medicare Advantage enrollees by more than $200 billion over 10 years.

“Given the scope and scale of these funding cuts, we have serious concerns about their likely impact,” AHIP President and CEO Karen Ignagni said in prepared statements posted on the association’s website. “Because the vast majority of the ACA’s cuts to the Medicare Advantage program have not yet taken effect, beneficiaries have not yet felt their full impact.”

Creasey, though, said the law will make the health insurance industry seem more fair and predictable to those over 50 who have had a tough time finding insurance, have lost their job recently or might want to change jobs.

The law allows parents to keep their dependant children on their insurance plans until age 26, eliminates the lifetime cap on what a person can receive in benefits and mandates insurance companies provide coverage for those with pre-existing conditions.

Creasey predicted there would be “hiccups” as the law continues to be rolled out. And there are many unknowns, such as the price of the insurance products that will be offered in the marketplace.

The hope is that it creates competition and drives down prices, she said, but stressed it’s too early to know if that’s what will happen.

“If everything goes as planned, it should benefit them,” she said.

Those who work with the elderly population encourage people to plan for future health issues so that they can be ready when they need services, such as assisted living.

Linda Strohschein, owner of Strohschein Law Group in St. Charles, encouraged baby boomers to have powers of attorney for health care and property.

“I think everyone needs one,” she said, noting those with powers of attorney can avoid a legal process. “If you haven’t gotten it by 50, run, not walk.”

Powers of attorney should be someone you trust, she said. She recommends people review the documents every three to five years so they can be updated to reflect any changes in the law.

Staff at Autumn Leaves Alzheimer’s and Memory Care in St. Charles recommend adults in their 50s begin to look at long-term health care insurance options.

“Nobody plans for this,” said Jason O’Higgins, regional director of sales and marketing for Autumn Leaves. “Nobody thinks it’s going to happen to them.”

But according to statistics from the Alzheimer’s Association, an estimated 5.2 million Americans have the disease. By 2025, the association reports, an estimated 7.1 million people 65 and older are expected to have Alzheimer’s, which represents a 40 percent increase from those seniors currently affected.

NIU officials spread word on trip to D.C.

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Northern Illinois University had a chance to shine at the nation’s capital this week.

NIU President Douglas Baker, along with a team of staff and students, went to Washington, D.C. on Monday for a twoday trip to demonstrate their accomplishments to members of Congress. While there, they also discussed issues affecting higher education, such as rising student loan interest rates.

For Baker, the trip was an opportunity to learn what legislators’ priorities were for Illinois and see how the university could help address them.

“I wanted to get the universi-

ty officials to know those issues in greater depth,” he said.

Building the economy through job creation and resolving student loan issues were two priorities he saw for Congress.

Recently, federal student loan interest rates Douglas Baker doubled from 3.4 percent to 6.8 percent. The U.S. Senate approved a bill to lower the interest rate Wednesday. A vote on the bill is expected soon by the House.

During the research roundtable, NIU faculty delivered several presentations on improving medical technology,

educational engagement and business innovation.

Lee Shumow, professor of leadership, educational psychology and foundations, presented her research on improving middle- and high-school learning in science education, along with fellow professor Jennifer Schmidt.

“It is a very, very big issue on the Hill in Washington, D.C., among policymakers,” she said, “because proficiency in science is very critical for careers.”

Shumow said several legislators said constituents had complained they could not find enough engineers to hire for their companies.

Through their research, Shumow and Schmidt discovered motivation and engage-

ment in the classroom depended on activities and interaction with the teachers. In response, they developed an experiment to improve motivation among students. They plan to publish their research and help teachers improve learning motivation in science.

One of the highlights of the trip was seeing NIU students and interns in action, Baker said. He said he was excited to see the some of the students tell lawmakers about their research. The internship program at NIU is something he plans to focus on as university president.

“It will immerse them in the reality of the world of work and enrich their experience,” Baker said.

He said members of Congress understand the value of engaging students in real-world activities. The university had illustrated the importance that engagement through the student research projects and internships, he said.

“The legislators see that every day,” Baker said. “They just see those students blossom in front of them and become staffers or legislators.”

While the opportunity to meet with members of Congress was exciting for everyone involved, for Shumow it emphasized the importance of knowing about what policymakers do for the nation.

“This renewed my belief that it is an important thing to do,” she said.

Campton Hills teen set for Games

AMPTON HILLS – Tyler Buterbaugh lives a stone’s throw from the St. Charles Farm equestrian center in Campton Hills, making it all the more bewildering that the 15-year-old hasn’t given horseback riding a serious go.

Finding a sport that Buterbaugh hasn’t tried is a bigger surprise than anything Buterbaugh might pull off at the upcoming World Dwarf Games in East Lansing, Mich.

Buterbaugh is training to compete in five events at the international competition that begins Aug. 3. The World Dwarf Games occur every four years, and this year’s edition is billed as the largest sporting event in history exclusively for athletes with dwarfism.

While Buterbaugh intends to compete in basketball, football, track and field, floor hockey and volleyball, he proudly calls football – a sport he played at Aurora Christian as a freshman last year – his “main sport.”

At 4-foot-2, 90 pounds, Buterbaugh has no qualms about absorbing contact as a linebacker or running back.

“I don’t really care what people think about me playing football, saying about me being too short,” Buterbaugh said. “I’m just going out playing what I like to play, and just doing what I’m good at.”

As much as Buterbaugh refuses to shy from competing against much taller athletes in various sports – wrestling, taekwondo and baseball are among the others he has played – taking on other dwarf athletes, or “short people,” as his father prefers, is naturally appealing.

“It’s more fair,” Buterbaugh said. “I have more of a chance to win. Like in basketball, they’ll just easily block me. If I go up against someone with my height, I’ll be able to shoot over them.”

Buterbaugh was born with achondroplasia, the most common type of dwarfism.

snap directly and surged into the end zone. Ward compared the sense of fulfillment from that play to winning a state championship, which the Eagles’ varsity team has accomplished each of the past two years.

“The way he played the game and his dedication to the game, you could tell his size never came into his mindset,” Ward said. “You’d tell him to get in there on 1-and-1 drills and he’d get in there and go right at kids who weigh [almost] four times as much as he does.”

Buterbaugh attended Thompson Middle School in St. Charles before transferring as an eighth-grader to Aurora Christian, where he originally played basketball and football before focusing on football as a freshman.

Aside from the physical challenges, his size has created many moments that have tested his fortitude. There are the inevitable stares, and he seethed when recounting some people who have snapped photographs of him for their apparent amusement.

“I kind of was tricked into it, I always say,” Estes said.

“I asked one of the older guys how it was to be a lacrosse goalie and he told my coach [Kevin Griffin] I wanted to play goalie. So next thing I know, I’m in goal. But I loved it and stuck with it.”

There’s no reason for either player to back out now. Ford and Estes became fast friends in high school after learning they had attended neighboring middle schools – Ford at Geneva North, and Estes at Geneva South.

With their club days behind them, the impromptu summer meetings have served as good get-togethers before Ford and Estes depart for Atlanta and Weston, Mass., respectively.

“It’s still definitely lots of conditioning,” Ford said. “I’m still working on my stick skills a lot, but I’m still looking forward to some time to actually

Dream catcher: St. Charles East senior Adam Rojas gained quick notice as a top defensive catcher while helping the Saints finish third in Class 4A in his debut season this spring.

Not much has changed in the six-plus weeks since the Saints played at the state tournament in Joliet. Rojas also played a vital role in East’s run to the Phil Lawler Summer Classic state semifinals at Benedictine University

this week.

“Great catcher. Great catcher, you know,” Saints junior right-hander Kyle Cook said. “He makes the big plays, he does everything necessary.

He calls a great game. He’ll get that sneaky pickoff on you every game. A great catcher all-around.”

Classic coach: Writers write and readers read “Phil Lawler Summer Classic” quite a bit this time of year, with many in the dark about who Lawler was.

The answer: a former longtime Naperville Central assistant baseball coach who served as summer tournament director from 1984 until his 2010 death after a bout with cancer.

Lawler and then-Redhawks coach Bill Seiple helped launch the tournament fans know today. It started with 16 teams in 1976 but since has ballooned considerably; 149 teams competed last summer.

St. Charles High won the 1977 tournament, while St. Charles East took the 2001 crown after the school split.

In for six: In addition to shifting its home turf from Geneva’s Burgess Field to West Aurora, the Fox Valley Eagles semipro football team also has changed home kickoff times to 6 p.m.

Fox Valley is scheduled to host games on four of the next five Saturdays, beginning this weekend when it entertains the Rock County (Wis.) Rage.

“I think every year, every generation, it gets better and better,” said David Buterbaugh, a laser quality specialist with Caterpillar Inc. in Montgomery. “I think [the reality show, ‘Little People, Big World’] kind of opened up a lot of eyes. … Back when my mom grew up and my dad grew up, it was really bad.

Short people couldn’t even get work, get jobs. They didn’t think people of short stature was capable of doing a regular job. I think [Tyler] has got it better than I did, sure.”

“The kids, especially when they were younger, would always try and do everything for the boys,” Kelly Buterbaugh said. “They kind of treated them like they were

younger. And so we had to kind of say ‘No, he can do that,’ with an accommodation, with a stool, with something else. … But I think overall this community has been pretty accepting of our family and encouraging them in sports.”

Buterbaugh is a role model

for his younger brothers, and hopes his willingness to stand up for himself rubs off on 10-year-old Foster.

“I’ve been always telling him, don’t take crap from anyone, who cares what they say,” Buterbaugh said. “Who are they judge to you?”

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Dwarf Athletic Association of America, an organization through which Buterbaugh previously has competed and that is sponsoring this year’s World Dwarf Games. About 400 athletes from 17 countries have registered for the Games, slated for Aug. 3 through 10 on the campus of Michigan State University.

One of Buterbaugh’s female cousins, from Rochelle, is among the participants. Kelly Buterbaugh said her son is burning off nerves with daily training sessions leading up to the Games.

“He’s a little nervous about what he’s going to come up against, so I think he’s very competitive and he wants to do his best,” Kelly Buterbaugh said. “I think he’s realizing he might have quite the competition.”

Recent Marmion graduates Sam Ford and Tyler Estes meet sporadically during the summer to practice lacrosse shots.

In some ways, the ritual mirrors their first workouts as Cadets, with two major differences notwithstanding.

These days, both Ford and Estes know they share a hometown in Geneva. They’re also accomplished enough to be awarded NCAA scholarships.

Ford (Division I Georgia Tech attackman) and Estes (Division III Regis College goalie) leave for separate schools next month, eager to show midwesterners can play lacrosse, too.

“The sport’s really been growing, and there’s a lot of talent coming out of this area, as well, which is phenomenal,” Ford said. “You hear a lot about colleges recruiting out of the East Coast, but there’s just as much talent here.”

Ford took a more conventional route to his collegiate career. Born in the lacrosse hotbed of Boston, he moved to Geneva with his family before first grade and quickly pursued youth club options in the sport.

PN HIGH A closer look at the local golf scene CHIP-INS Mello Milo Milo French missed the cut in his two Illinois Open appearances before this week.

He was recently removed from his Kaneland graduation then, which, as French tells it, says a mouthful about how he fared.

Refocused and re-energized by his young son and family, French cited maturity as the chief reason behind his ninth-place tie at the 2013 Open, which concluded Wednesday at The Glen Club in Glenview.

Milo French “Definitely came away with a very positive experience. Definitely learned a lot about the importance of minimizing mistakes in a tournament like that,” French said. “Definitely a step in the right direction that will make me a better player in the long run.”

French carded two double bogeys and one triple en route to a three-day, 2-under-par score of 214. In the past, he said, such blow-up holes would send him sputtering.

Not anymore.

Behind his newfound perspective and the guidance of caddy Greg Takata of North Aurora, French has harnessed his mental game more than ever. Perhaps he can lend encouragement to any fellow golfers at his 10-year Kaneland reunion next summer.

“Everybody can handle playing well and hitting good shots just fine. That’s never going to be a problem for anybody,” French said. “The biggest problem a player can face on a golf course is your misses. Recovering from that and not letting that affect you the rest of the round is something I did very well all week.”

(Hot) dogleg hole National Hot Dog Day might have been Tuesday, but early patrons of Batavia’s Settler’s Hill Golf Course relished a miniature reprisal Thursday.

Among its listing of online specials, Settler’s Hill offered a free hot dog to any player paying for a round before 2 p.m.

The promotion was billed as “Dog Day Afternoon.” The pleasant weather suggested it was anything but.

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com Barring inspiration from yours truly or Buzz Bissinger, “3 Weekends In July and August” isn’t likely to join the annals of golf literature anytime soon.

It’s not that the St. Charles Men’s Tournament isn’t fit to have a book thrown at it, but with the event’s longstanding layout under initial review, another working title works better.

The 2013 men’s tournament at Pottawatomie Golf Course begins with qualifying rounds Saturday and Sunday. After that, the field will be flighted before match play tournaments determine the city’s various champions over the next two weekends.

No doubt that’s a grueling but fair test to award such accolades. The matter on Pottawatomie pro Ron Skubisz’s mind is whether it’s a viable one.

“Everything is questioned not because you wonder if it’s right or wrong, but whether it’s relevant to today,” Skubisz said. “That’s certainly not just relegated to the golf course. Every business and every place and every home and everybody. The only thing we know for sure is that there’s change.”

Skubisz, in his third year since taking over for retired longtime Pottawatomie pro Jim Wheeler, isn’t out to assail the old guard. The city’s golfing clientele simply isn’t entering the tournament the way it has in past summers, a frustration that’s also seeped into the course’s similar events for women and

“The weekends of having to give that up, it’s hard for us economically, but it’s hard for people to justify that anymore,” Skubisz said. “If you have kids and you’re at the golf course Saturday-Sunday, Saturday-Sunday, Saturday-Sunday in the middle of the summer, it’s getting hard for people to be able to make that commitment, too.”

Assistant pro Bill Ogiego coordinates each tournament, from collecting entry fees to masterfully writing players’ names on the leaderboard on the Pottawatomie patio.

He certainly sees something of a trickle-up effect from children to parents when it comes to modern family time dynamics. Ogiego knows the score

when it comes to the city’s juniors and adult players alike.

“I remember growing up, I played baseball in the summer and I had 16 games,” Ogiego said. “I have a kid in my junior golf league who had swimming at 6 a.m., 6 to 8. Had tennis from 9 to 11, played his nine holes down here in the league and then had a baseball game in the evening. How parents have enough time to do what they have to do, you know, three weekends, is a tough thing.”

Still, it’s not just the family men.

Past summers have produced a handful of cases in which newly married or single competitors weighed entering the tournament against vacationing with their wives or girlfriends.

Even the recent high school graduates or young collegians in the field might face conflicts from orientation or early returns to campus.

Nothing has been established yet, but the tournament appears to be scrambling to work on its short game.

Aurora crowns a city champ with a 72-hole flighted tournament, but that’s just one alternative.

“It’ll still be here,” Ogiego said, “but how will it be, we don’t know.”

Sounds like ideal tee box chatter. Beginning Saturday, the best of the best will have three weekends to talk.

SOX INSIDER Meghan Montemurro edly gave the OK. Wearing the throwback might become a day game tradition after the Sox snapped a three-game losing streak with a 7-4 win against Detroit.

“Last year, I never made a start on Sunday and didn’t get to pitch in those [1972 throwbacks], and we all know the situation and I hadn’t pitched in these, and these are so cool,” Peavy explained.

Standing in front of his locker after the win, Peavy (8-4) certainly sounded like a player prepping to be traded.

Peavy said he doesn’t have a gut feeling as to what will transpire, though he has talked with general manager Rick

Hahn and now must sit and wait. Peavy does have some of his belongings packed in case a deal happens.

“He’s a big part of this team and he’s a veteran leader and sets examples for a lot of guys,” catcher Tyler Flowers said. “He’s a guy that’s helped me since he came over. We’ve worked together a fair bit and I love catching him.”

If Thursday was his last start with the Sox, Peavy finished his career with a strong performance. Although the Tigers scored four runs off Peavy in seven-plus innings, the 32-year-old right hander held them to four hits and struck out seven. Sox fans gave Peavy a standing ovation when he struck out Don Kelly to end the seventh inning and again when Ventura pulled him from the game after he gave up a ho-

mer to Brayan Pena to start the eighth. Peavy tipped his cap to the fans as he walked off the field both times.

“It was very humbling. It was emotional for me,” Peavy said. “If it was the last time I pitch here at U.S. Cellular, with this uniform on, it was a nice way to go out. It meant the absolute world to me. I hope everyone knows that.”

Any team scouting Peavy, who has one year left on his contract, had to be pleased Thursday with his improved command from his first start off the disabled list Saturday against the Braves. Despite giving up three home runs, Peavy allowed fewer hits and controlled Detroit hitters with a sharp fastball that sat at 92 mph.

Peavy said he felt fine and wasn’t experiencing any rib soreness, which aids the onfield results that he’s healthy.

His impact on the Sox extends beyond his 36-29 record in parts of five seasons on the South Side. The guidance he provides to younger pitchers is invaluable, and Peavy will be tough to replace inside the clubhouse should the Sox trade him.

“I don’t want him to go,” Ventura said. “I enjoy him being on our team; I know what he means. I don’t make that decision so again, I’m kind of the guy that appreciates him being on our team right now and I hope he’s here through next year, too.”

CHICAGO – As much as Jake Peavy has tried to keep on the blinders amid trade speculation, even he is beginning to embrace what could be his final days in a White Sox uniform.

He had that in mind when Sox clubhouse manager Vince Fresso asked Peavy which jersey he wanted to wear for his start Thursday against the Tigers with the expectation he’d choose their classic white or black jersey.

Peavy, realizing it could be his last start on the South Side with the July 31 trade deadline less than a week away, took advantage of the opportunity.

Bourbonnais felt like Gainesville for the former Florida Gator in his first full day at camp.

“The whole coaching staff and the players kind of make it feel like home. Since I’ve been up here, it’s been like a home away from home,” Bostic said.

During Trivia Night, teams of six to 10 people will battle against each other. Each team has its own table and answers trivia questions together.

The evening is also highlighted by additional games and a 50/50 raffle.

The event is BYOF – or bring your own food – and attendees are encouraged to bring food for their table to share. Teams can also create a team name and theme. The Batavia Moose has a cash bar. No outside alcohol is

Martin was awarded an Outstanding Service Award for his role as secretary of the club.

Brown was given the award for his leadership and fundraising efforts, which helped the second annual evening of Chicago bluegrass concert gross over $30,000, states a news release.

Ford’s Escape offers family satisfaction One of the more appealing crossovers (also called sport utilities) on the market is Ford’s Escape.

Redesigned in 2013, the 2014 Escape remains svelte and powerful in appearance. Based on Ford’s Kuga in Europe, the current Escape rides on a wheelbase that is 2.8 inches longer, 1.3 inches wider and 1.6 inches lower than its 2012 forbearer. The lower stance contributes to the svelte appearance.

The redesign added a power liftgate and a MyFordTouch electronics interface to the Escape.

The three 2014 Escape models are the S, SE and Titanium. The SEL was discontinued for 2014. Two changes for 2014 compared to 2013 were advantageous to the S and SE models.

A rearview camera and Ford’s Sync are standard on those two, as well as the top-of-the-line Titanium model.

Available and designed for Ford by Microsoft, Sync (introduced in the 2008 model year) allows cell phones, MP3 players, USB storage devices and a navigation system to be activated by voice command.

Also, a power liftgate, which is standard equipment on the Titanium, is now in 2014 a $495 stand-alone option. In 2013, the liftgate was part of an S and SE option package priced close to $2,000.

During the test week, the power liftgate worked well and was utilized several times a day during the test week.

Also improved are the split and fold rear seats. This year, they fold flat much easier than last year.

There is no difference in storage space as, in 2013, maximum cargo capacity was 67.8 cubic feet and so it still is.

Storage behind an upright rear bench seat remains 34.3 cubic feet. The storage floor is carpeted, lighted and has tiedowns.

During the week, passengers mentioned the comfortable leg room in front and the rear. For the record, leg room is 43.1 inches in front and 36.8 inches in the rear.

The suspension system is pretty basic with struts in front, multilinks in the rear, twin-tube hydraulic gas shocks and stabilizer bars front and rear. The suspension offers an even ride with no plunges or fish tailing in hard braking.

BEHIND THE WHEEL Jerry Kuyper dows (driver’s express down but not up), power driver’s seat (front passenger’s manual), tilt and telescoping steering wheel, cruise control, air conditioning, dual zone climate controls, lighted vanity mirrors on visors, compass, clock, map lights front and rear, trip meters, and tachometer.

Seat trim is cloth, not leather in the SE. The cloth is soft and appears to be of a durable nature.

Trim materials in the Escape are topnotch if not spectacular.

Insulation factors are very good.

Some noise, but not much, entered the cabin from the engine compartment or the outside environment.

Other niceties include 12-volt power

outlets, cupholders, grab handles, armrests, front and rear carpeted floor mats, intermittent front wipers, rear defroster, wiper and washer and solar tinted glass.

Fog lamps in front, blind spot mirrors, halogen headlights, 17-inch aluminum wheels (P235 radial tires), dual chrome exhaust tips, lighted entry and redundant audio controls on the leather-wrapped steering wheel are standard.

The 1.6-liter, turbocharged 178-horsepower four-cylinder engine mated to a six-speed shiftable automatic transmission did not strain itself while carrying four adults and 30 pounds of cargo here and there during the test week.

Properly equipped, the front-wheeldrive (or optional all-wheel-drive) SE has a 2,000 pound towing capacity.

During the test week, the 3,515-pound vehicle averaged 27.2 miles per gallon or a fraction more than a Titanium model tested a month ago. Unleaded regular gasoline is recommended for

the 15.1 gallon fuel tank.

The Environmental Protection Agency rates the 2014 SE at 23 mpg city and 32 mpg highway. Safety features include airbags in front, on the sides in front, curtains overhead for two rows and a knee airbag for the driver.

The Escape’s standard safety fare includes antilock disc brakes, traction and stability controls, lighted entry and a tire pressure monitor. A temporary spare is stored under the load floor.

From the front, rear and sides, the Escape is a handsome vehicle.

The interior is comfortable as it has padded seats and the upgrade materials. Fit and finish of the Escape is worthy of crossovers in the luxury market.

Ford offers 24-hour roadside assistance for five years or unlimited mileage in its warranty.

The limited warranty is three years or 36,000 miles, and five years or 60,000 miles on the powertrain.

‘Wolverine’ succumbs to comic book climax What it’s about: Summoned to Tokyo to bid farewell to an old, dying friend, Wolverine (Jackman) finds himself in the middle of warring factions of the man’s family, corrupt politicians, Yakuza and ninjas.

After saving the man’s granddaughter (Okamoto) Wolverine discovers he is losing the healing ability that keeps him immortal.

Verdict: As directed by James Mangold (“3:10 to Yuma”) the second solo “Wolverine” feature (the first should be forgotten) strives mightily to separate itself from the look and conventions of the modern comic book movie. It succeeds handsomely for most of its running time before succumbing to a standard comic book climax.

The Japanese locations and milieu lend a unique look and feel, and Jackman’s morose soul carries the themes of death and rebirth. A fight atop a speeding bullet train is a standout action sequence.

Free of heroes and villains in spandex costumes, “The Wolverine” strives mightily to be unlike any other comic book movie.

As directed by James Mangold, Hugh Jackman’s long-awaited return as his X-Men character succeeds handsomely in this mission for most of its running time.

It ends the same way just about every other comic book movie ends – this may be the curse of the genre – but while “The Wolverine” blazes its own trail, it is exciting to behold.

Not long after it begins, “The Wolverine” plays as if Jackman’s Logan has wandered into a Japanese gangster film already in progress. The setting immediately places it apart from other Marvel movies,

The script is based on the most celebrated Wolverine comic storyline, the 1982 “Japanese saga” written and drawn by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller.

Mangold and the screenwriters Mark Bomback, Scott Frank and Christopher McQuarrie make Japan central to the story, not just its scenery and locales, but its legends and history. Several characters equate Logan with a Ronin, a samurai warrior without a master.

Samurai movies are a strong influence on “The Wolverine,” but so is film noir. Like Raymond Chandler’s Philip Marlowe often did, Logan finds himself caught up in the personal betrayals and political corruption that swirl from the rotten core of a powerful family. As in the classic Marlowe films, the plot turns murky and confusing. A host of duplicitous characters are introduced in a brief span; keeping them straight can be difficult.

While living as a hermit in the Canadian wilderness, Logan is summoned to Tokyo to bid farewell to an old friend. The man, Yashida (Haruhiko Yamanouchi), is now Japan’s leading industrialist, but Logan (who you should remember is immortal and invulnerable) remembers him as the young prison guard he saved from the Nagasaki bombing.

That may sound impossible, but the flashback that opens the film makes it almost plausible. And, yes, “The Wolverine” opens

The second solo “Wolverine” feature strives to separate itself from the look and conventions of the modern comic book movie. with the atomic devastation of Nagasaki, an immediate indication this will not be a cheerful picture. The story is suffused with pangs of death, and it is, rather quixotically, a tale of rebirth for a man who cannot die.

Yashida is only days, perhaps hours, away from succumbing to cancer.

Sensing that Logan despairs of his unending life, Yashida asks Logan to surrender his healing powers in one of those transplant operations that are possible in comic books. Logan declines, and Yashida dies the next morning.

When the Yakuza attempt to assassinate Yashida’s granddaughter, Mariko (Tao Okamoto), at the funeral, Logan leaps into action to rescue her, then takes her into hiding in the countryside. While on the run, Logan realizes he is slowly losing his ability to heal – a lousy discovery to make after suffering several gunshot wounds.

While “The Wolverine” may sound more atmospheric and plotheavy than other comic movies, Mangold packs it

with action. Wolverine is a brawler by nature, and he plows through Yakuza, ninjas and samurai with equal ferocity. Because of the Asian setting, the fight scenes incorporate plenty of martial arts swordplay.

In the James Bond/ Indiana Jones tradition, “The Wolverine” has one showcase action sequence so mind-blowing that viewers will rave about it as they leave the theater.

It appears early on as Logan battles Yakuza killers atop a bullet train racing through Japan in excess of 200 mph. Logan alternates between digging his claws into the train’s steel frame to hold himself in place and using the slipstream to fly like Superman. This dizzying set piece is a respite of fun in an otherwise moody story.

Wolverine has long been more convincing to me as a tragic antihero than Batman.

Jackman sells the one significant aspect that does separate “The Wolverine” from other comic book movies.

In “The Wolverine,” death is as seductive as it is fearsome.

Tai chi can help Parkinson’s sufferers Dear Doctor K: I’ve heard that tai chi may help people with Parkinson’s disease. Could you please elaborate?

Dear Reader: Parkinson’s disease (PD) affects the brain. The earliest brain changes probably begin when someone is a young adult, but the symptoms of the disease usually don’t begin until much later in life.

Parkinson’s disease interferes with muscle control, leading to trembling; stiffness and inflexibility of the arms, legs, neck and trunk; loss of facial expression; trouble speaking clearly; trouble swallowing; and a variety of other symptoms. These changes interfere with the ability to carry out everyday activities.

Medications can help, but they sometimes have unwanted side effects. So finding treatments other than medications would be a valuable advance.

Tai chi is an ancient Chinese practice of slow, graceful movements that flow smoothly from one pose to the next. During the choreographed moves, gradual shifts of weight from one foot to another combine with rotating the trunk and extending the limbs in a series of challenges that help to improve balance. Tai chi strengthens and stretches tight

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff muscles. By enhancing balance and muscle strength, tai chi helps prevent falls and girds against physical decline.

But can patients with Parkinson’s disease reap these same benefits from tai chi? A study recently published in the New England Journal of Medicine put that question to the test. A team from the Oregon Research Institute recruited 195 men and women with mild to moderate Parkinson’s disease. They were randomly assigned to twiceweekly sessions of either tai chi, strength-building exercises or stretching.

The results? After six months, Parkinson’s patients who did tai chi were stronger and had much better balance than patients in the other two groups. The tai chi group also had significantly fewer falls and slower rates of decline in overall motor control. Tai chi is a safe exercise.

I have a dear friend who has suffered from Parkinson’s disease for more than 20 years.

Sometimes, he just “froze”: He just

couldn’t will himself to speak or move. His doctor suggested that when that happened he should try to break the freeze by shouting. It was easier to shout a word or two than to speak them, and it worked – but it startled folks around him.

So he had an inspired idea. He asked another mutual friend, a professional singer, to teach him to sing. Particularly he wanted to sing songs that required a lot of smooth modulations – some phrases sung softly, and others sung loudly and with passion. It seemed to reduce the number of times that he “froze.” It was a kind of vocal tai chi.

Dear Teens: What is your definition of the American dream?

According to a poll by the Job Shadow Coalition, which provides students with on-the-job experience, most teens would describe it simply as, “being happy, no matter what you do.”

That answer was the top choice among the 644 teens polled in the survey. In second place was, “having a house, cars and a good job,” followed by “being able to provide for my family, “having a career of my dreams,” “being rich and/or famous” and “owning my own business and being the boss.”

Overall, 71 percent of the teens believe the American dream is achievable today, 10 percent aren’t sure, and 10 percent feel the American dream is now out of reach.

How will the American dream be achieved? Seventy percent believe higher education is the key to attaining this goal. The remaining 30 percent believe education “doesn’t matter.”

Seventy-five percent of the boys believe the American dream is obtainable and 68 percent of the girls feel that way.

Many young drinkers use alcohol especially when they want to impress a member of the opposite sex; this is sometimes known as “finding courage in a bottle.” They tell themselves they can’t overcome their shyness without a couple of drinks. Also, some males think drinking will show off their masculinity.

For some teens, the motive is almost entirely to be accepted by the group. Hard-core teen drinkers sometimes drink just because they’re bored and feel there is nothing better to do. They get their alcohol from their parents’ liquor cabinet.

Dr. Wallace: I’m 15 and have just started dating. My parents have set an 11:15 p.m. curfew for Friday and Saturday nights. On my first date, a guy I really like got upset when I told him what time I had to be home.

He said all the other girls my age he’s dated have midnight curfews.

He wanted me to try to convince my parents to extend mine to midnight, too.

If they refuse, he wouldn’t take me out anymore, he said. What should I do? Please hurry with your answer.

Dear Abby: I was a single mom for most of my teenagers’ lives.

We have never been financially stable, and lately things have hit an all-time low.

I am prone to bouts of depression. I remarried last year, and my husband unfortunately does not understand or tolerate the depressions. He feels I should just “get over” things.

That would be suicidal if West has the spade ace-jack and club king. Instead, South will win the first trick and take the club finesse. But East wins with his king, cashes the spade ace, and leads his last spade for down one.
