Sixth annual Chris Walk set for Saturday

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Vicki Foley doesn’t want to see another family suffer through the pain that drug abuse causes.

Her son, Chris Foley, 27, of St. Charles, died July 2007 of a heroin overdose. He had battled a heroin addiction for 10 years.

To help bring awareness to the problem of substance abuse, the sixth annual Chris Walk Against Substance Abuse will take place from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Batavia Riverwalk at Houston Street and North Island Avenue in Batavia.

Chris Walk is a nonprofit organization dedicated to raising awareness and funds to support the fight against substance abuse.

and how prevalent it was in the community,” said Foley, president of the Chris Walk board. She is an employee of Shaw Media, which publishes the Kane County Chronicle.

As part of the event, the Midwest Misfits Running Club will host a 5K run along the west side of the Riverwalk.

Home sales up in Tri-Cities in June; prices ease

By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com The summer home-swapping season got off to a strong start in the Tri-Cities and elsewhere in Kane County.

After the local housing market closed out the spring months in strong fashion, the momentum carried into June, as local home sales increased by almost 28 percent, according to the most recent round of home-sales data.

The MainStreet Organization of Realtors, a trade group representing Chicago-area real estate agents, reported that 183 detached single-family homes sold in June in the Tri-Cities of St. Charles, Geneva and Batavia, combined.

In June 2012, 143 homes sold in the Tri-Cities, the MainStreet Organization reported.

In May, home sales in the three communities surged by 61 percent to 166 homes sold, compared to the 103 home sales in the same month a year earlier.

In Kane County, overall, 778 homes sold, marking an increase of 21 percent from June 2012, according to data from the Illinois Association of Re-

Throughout the county, sellers also found buyers willing to pay more for their homes last month.

The IAR reported that the median price of single-family homes in Kane County increased by 16.3 percent in June to $210,000.

In the Tri-Cities, however, the average of the median prices in Batavia, Geneva and St. Charles slid by about 8 percent from $346,250 to $317,417.

That price, however, still marked an increase from the $315,000 price recorded in the Tri-Cities in May.

Residential pools, spas pose risks if precautions not taken

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com The bright blue pool in Jerry Cass’ backyard in Geneva isn’t large, just 30 inches deep with an inflated top and a small ladder.

Cass said the family had relatives visit recently, and once he figured out how much it would cost to go to a public pool, he bought a pool as a less expensive option.

When the pool is not being used, he fastens its drawstring cover. But more importantly, Cass removes the ladder entirely.

“I lock the ladder away in the garage,” Cass said.

It is the most basic safety measure Cass can take to make sure no one goes in the pool unsupervised – particularly someone’s adventurous toddler – and runs the risk of drowning.

A backyard pool – deep or shallow, above-ground or inground – and spas are attractive to children, so those who buy them get information on required national and local safety codes.

For example, the city of St. Charles has an 18-page ordinance governing pool and spa construction containing 24 inches or more of water. The ordinance covers everything from the cost of permits, as well as inspections and location on the property, down to the mesh size of a chain-link barrier fence, which is not to exceed 1¾ inches.

Fast facts • 75 percent of children involved swimming submersion or drowning accidents were between 1 and 3 years old.

• Boys between 1 and 3 years old were the most likely victims of fatal drownings and near-fatal submersions in residential swimming pools.

• Most victims were being supervised by one or both parents when the swimming pool accident

occurred.

• Nearly half were last seen in the house before the pool accident occurred with 23 percent last seen on the porch, patio or yard – meaning 69 percent who became victims were not expected to be in or at the pool, but were found drowned or submerged in the water.

• 65 percent of accidental drownings occur in pools owned by the

victim’s immediate family.

• 33 percent occur in pools owned by friends or relatives.

• Less than 2 percent were the result of children trespassing.

• 77 percent had been missing five minutes or less than found drowned or submerged.

The ordinance also notes pools’ special danger to very young children who can move quickly and unpredictably: “By the time a child’s absence is noted, the child may have drowned. ... Toddlers are inquisitive and impulsive and

lack a realistic sense of danger.”

Frank Gaudio, regional manager for The Great Escape in Batavia, said whenever a customer decides to buy a backyard pool, much time is spent going over the safety require-

ments.

“It’s a lot of simple stuff that they don’t think about,” Gaudio said. “There are national building codes that govern the swimming pool industry about what can and can’t be set up.”

ing inspection by the city, village or county, and Gaudio guides customers through so they comply with all the safety issues.

“We direct them to city building departments to get a packet, and we go over all the safety requirements,” Gaudio said. “If a pool is going up, we make sure it goes up safely.”

Among the requirements is a 48-inch barrier between the pool and the yard, and a locking style or removable ladder.

Depending on how large the pool is, another requirement is a fence with a self-closing, self-latching gate, Gaudio said.

“If there is a sliding glass patio door, it would have an audio alarm,” Gaudio said. “So if a child walked out of the home, you’re going to hear it. You would be alerted to it.”

With spas, the danger is more associated with adults using alcohol or drugs while sitting in the warm, swirling water, not realizing the heat amplifies the sedative effect and can lead to accidental drowning, he said.

Many pools have impenetrable automatic covers, such as at the in-ground pool at Catherine Madlinger’s Batavia Township home.

“We lock all the gates,” Madlinger said. “The automatic cover is operated by [a] key that I take with me. So even if somebody climbed the gate, they could not uncover the pool.”

Luxury town home area taking shape

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com NORTH AURORA – A new 146-unit town house rental community continues to take shape in North Aurora.

Naperville-based Marquette Management Inc. is managing the Randall Highlands rental town home community, located along Randall Road. The community opened in April.

“People started moving into the community in May,” said Jim Cunningham, executive vice president of Marquette Management. “Twenty-four people are living in the community right now.”

Cunningham said renting is an attractive option these days for those people who don’t want to get locked into a mortgage for whatever reason.

The two- and three-bedroom units range in price from $1,625 to $2,015 a month.

“It is a form of choice,” he said.

About half the town house units are built. Sales are go-

ing well, he said.

“By next May or June, we will be 98 percent occupied,” Cunningham said.

The community features two- and three-bedroom town houses with attached two-car garages.

The rental town houses also feature such amenities as granite countertops, walkin closets and stainless steel appliances.

“We are selling a lifestyle here,” Cunningham said.

In addition, a community center that will be finished in December will feature a 24-hour fitness center, an outdoor zero-depth pool, a fire pit and patio and a sun deck along with other amenities.

Marquette Management manages 21 communities in the Chicago region, including The Ponds Of Naperville and The Towers at Twin Lakes in Lisle.

asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Steve Spear – a St. Charles man running across the country to provide clean water for an African village – arrived in downtown St. Charles late Saturday morning, sweaty but in good spirits.

“This is awesome,” Spear, 49, said of the hometown rally celebration near Dick Pond Athletics on North Second Street. “I feel like a kid in a candy shop.”

Spear is running from Los Angeles to New York as part of Team World Vision, one of the fundraising programs for World Vision. He hopes to raise $1.5 million to build a clean water and sanitation system for 30,000 people in Kenya.

Thoughts of one Kenyan, a 7-year-old girl named Winnie whom he met only once, keep him motivated to run 35 miles a day, five days a week, he said. He said she walks six miles every day for water – contaminated water.

“That definitely is a motivation for me to keep moving day after day,” said Spear, who gave up his post as pastor

With 840 miles to his final destination, Spear has raised about $129,000, said his 20-year-old daughter, Chelsea Spear.

“He’ll do what it takes to get it done, even after the run,” she said.

Chelsea Spear joined her father on his quest in Amarillo, Texas, early last month, although she doesn’t run alongside him because of an injury, she said. She said his dedication has been amazing, motivating and inspiring.

“He’s an amazing man to just really take this leap of faith and what he felt God wanted him to do,” Zafiriou said.

Zafiriou and her 18-yearold daughter are among those who have visited Steve Spear on his route. They visited him in Oklahoma soon after Father’s Day, Zafiriou said.

“It was a lot of fun to catch up with him on the road,” she said.

Wanting to support him, Zafiriou will hold a fundraiser at her salon, Suzanne Denee Salon & Day Spa at 3861 E. Main St. in St. Charles, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday. All proceeds of the Cut and Run will benefit Steve Spear’s Running for Water campaign. The minimum suggested donation will be $20, she said.

“I really want to support this effort as much as I can,” Zafiriou said.

She recommended that families with small children should not even have a backyard pond, and those with small inflatable pools should empty them and turn them upside down at night.

“Do not allow access to anything that has water,” Reilly said. “Small children do not know how to extricate themselves from water.”

Superintendent Kent Mutchler said the district already did a study in 2008 focusing on the educational implications of all-day kindergarten, and could revisit its information.

“We would really value and need that collaboration from our teachers and our other staff to guide where we would go,” Mutchler said.

Board member Kelly Nowak said she wanted to see a timeline for implementation.

“I think we should pursue it aggressively,” Nowak said.

“I think it’s time we think about this seriously. You say it will take about a year ... I’d like to sit down and say, here

are the deadlines and see how reasonably long each task will take ... I’d like to see reports on a regular basis.”

Board member Mary Stith agreed with an aggressive timeline, saying the board had previously decided allday kindergarten was good for children, but the district did not pursue it because of finances.

Board President Mark Grosso said he would schedule a public forum on it, noting emails of support, as well as two residents who addressed the board to urge support for all-day kindergarten.

Among the issues to be considered are whether to have parents pay separately for the cost of an extra half day, or to offer it like first grade and provide services to all, officials said.

“I want this to benefit our kids,” Grosso said. “I do not want it to be some form of day care for some folks.”

ST. CHARLES – It’s going to cost the city nearly $52,000 over budget to build a parking lot at the former Veterans of Foreign Wars property in downtown St. Charles, and aldermen are fine with that.

The city recently purchased the property at 119 N. Third St. Public Works Director Mark Koenen told the Government Services Committee on Monday that the city – which budgeted $200,000 for the project – has spent about $81,000 on environmental remediation and demolition costs, leaving only $119,000 for construction.

A Lamp Concrete Inc. of Schaumburg submitted the lowest proposal for construction at $170,660, exceeding the total project budget by $51,660, Koenen said.

What happened, he said, is the city budgeted about $25,000 for the demolition of the VFW building, but the actual costs were about $75,000.

“There is the explana-

tion,” Koenen said.

Aldermen had three choices, he said: • As originally planned, reconstruct the existing lot with the addition of the new lot where the VFW was and amend the budget by about $50,000.

• Build a new lot where the building was, but only perform grinding, resurfacing and re-striping on the existing southern lot. This option would be about $26,353 over budget and would have less green space than the other option.

• Research options that would cost even less, thus delaying the process.

Koenen noted the city has money from the Red Gate Bridge levy to help pay for the overbudgeted items, and the work could be completed

by Scarecrow Fest in October.

Karen loved nature. Bird watching both in the fields and backyard birding were a favorite pastime.

She was adamant about keeping the feeders and the birdbaths filled.

Her birding and work at Waubonsee came together at one point when she walked down a path between buildings on the Sugar Grove campus and came eye to eye with a pair of Sandhill Cranes walking the other direction.

She was a great cook; her garlic clove studded pork roast and her fully vegetarian version of French onion soup were favorites.

She is survived by her sister, Robin Coleman; her partner and companion of 35 years, Terri Hoehne; several cousins; and many dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Gene and Sue (nee Fog) Land; and her beloved nephew, Michael Colemen.

GENEVA – Dennis Duffy, longtime Geneva resident, passed away Thursday, July 18, 2013, peacefully at home with his loving wife of 49 years, Mary Ann, by his side.

Dennis spent his youth in Homewood. He graduated from Mendel High School in Chicago and then went on to graduate from St. Joseph’s College in Indiana.

Dennis was employed at Sears and Roebuck in Chicago for 26 years.

He and his family lived in Geneva for 35 years.

Dennis was an active member of the community and St. Peter Church in Geneva. Dennis was instrumental in the formation of the Tri-Cities Youth Soccer Association back in the late 1970s. He also was very active with the Boy Scout Troop from St. Peter’s Church.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann; son, Dennis (Anita) Duffy; son, David (Susan) Duffy; daughter, Claire Duffy; son, Charlie (Kim) Duffy; daughter, Christa (Chris) Olson; daughter, Mary (David) Romero; his sister, Judy Bendle; 12 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Dennis was preceded in death by his sister, Kathleen Basile; and his granddaughther, Cecelia Duffy.

Blair graduated from Batavia High School in 1953. He attended Knox College, where he graduated in 1957. He proudly served his country in the United States Army.

He married Kenlyn Windisch in Galesburg in 1957, and together they raised their family in Batavia.

She preceded him in death in 1992.

In 1993, he was married to Erika Fischer Bolger in Geneva. Blair and Erika enjoyed 20 years of retirement, travel and time with family.

Blair worked for Globe Union Inc., and Zenith Electronics Corporation, where he retired in 1992.

He is survived by his wife, Erika; his daughters, Susan Drozdz and Sarah (Don) Adams; his son, Dale (Marsha) Johnston; his stepdaughters, Kerry Bolger and Colleen (Jeff) Middendorf; his stepsons, Kevin (Jenny) Bolger and Fred (Mary) Bolger; and his brother, David (Carol) Johnston. He was “Papa” to 13 grandchildren.

JAMES MICHAEL REY Died: July 18, 2013; in Portland, Maine ST. CHARLES –James Michael Rey was passionate about life and about the people who shared his world.

He thoroughly enjoyed Maine and spending time along its beautiful shoreline. After living in landlocked Chicago for more than 20 years, he moved to Standish, Maine, upon retiring.

With Sebago Lake close by, he took up sailing. James found great joy in solo sailing, but also welcomed friends and family to join him on the “High C’s.” James also returned to his love of music, which included the trumpet, cornet and flugelhorn. He joined multiple community bands and in the process formed many close friendships. Cancer, however, abruptly halted these new pursuits.

On July 18, 2013, he died in the comfort of family at Mercy Hospital in Portland.

James was born in Lockport, N.Y., in 1944. James loved people. He very much enjoyed the bantering and discussion that emerges when

friends engage in dialogue. This is probably why he was so successful in his sales career.

After graduating college and serving in the Navy, James began his career in sales. He sold everything from toys to wine to biodegradable cleaning products.

His numerous jobs took him to New Jersey, New York, Ohio and Illinois.

He loved the challenge of selling and the adventure of travel, and when retirement arrived, he looked forward to making more connections to others.

He and his wife Janice moved from their home in St. Charles to Standish, Maine. After many moves to promote his career, he said this move was so Janice could pursue her new career opportunity as a college professor.

Born to Grace and James E. Rey, James is survived by his wife, Janice; daughter, Jamie; and son-inlaw, Nick Chapman of Glen Ellyn. In addition, he leaves his sister, Susan (Michael) La Graff of Pinehurst, N.C.; brother, Jeff (Debbie) Rey of Lockport, N.Y., and sister-in-law, Andele Thomas Novak of Natick, Mass. He also is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 23, at St. Joseph’s College, 278 Whites Bridge Road, Standish, Maine. Burial will be private.

He was born June 8, 1924, in Chicago, the son of William O. and Anna M. (nee Burcky) Roessler.

He was united in marriage to Fern Norma Peterson on Feb. 21, 1948, in Chicago.

Bill graduated from Calumet High School in Chicago. He proudly served his country as a member of the Army Air Corps. He completed a course on pre-meteorology at the University of Chicago and later graduated from the Illinois Institute of Technology with a bachelor of science degree in industrial engineering. He worked for the Association of Mill & Elevator Mutual Insurance Companies (the

Mill Mutuals), first as an engineer and later as general manager. In 1970, he started an employment agency for insurance personnel, the Insurance Register, where he served as president.

Later in life, he enjoyed bicycling, gardening, walking and spending time with his family.

He loved talking with his neighbors and everyone he came across.

He is survived by two children, Susan Ann (Daniel) Korb and William Ansel (Kimberly) Roessler Jr.; and four grandchildren, Emily Susan Korb, Andrew Daniel Korb, Kate Morgan Roessler and Erin Madison Roessler.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Fern, in 2003; and a sister, Doris A. Nielsen.

A funeral service will be at 11 a.m.

Thursday, July 25, at Moss-Norris Funeral Home, 100 S. Third St., St. Charles. The visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the time of service, with Pastor Jana Chwalisz officiating.

EDITH M. WILSON Born: July 25, 1921; in Troy Grove Died: July 17, 2013; in St. Charles ST. CHARLES – Edith M. (Betty) (Read) Wilson, 91, died Wednesday, July 17, 2013, at Rosewood Care Center of St. Charles.

Born July 25, 1921, in Troy Grove, she was the daughter of John and Mable Rempfer. Betty graduated from Maple Park High School in 1939. Betty married Donald Read Sr. (deceased) on Nov. 9, 1942. The two of them loved to go dancing at Long’s Barn and the Blue Moon.

She attended Elgin Beauty College and owned her own beauty shop in their home for many years.

She was a member of the Baker Memorial Church in St. Charles.

She was active in the Young Mother’s Club and numerous school

activities involving her children.

She worked at the Way Side Cross Mission in Aurora as supervisor of the women’s division. While there, she met her second husband, Richard Wilson (deceased). She was a longtime resident of Heritage Woods in Batavia. She lived her entire life in the Fox Valley Area.

The St. Charles Chamber of Commerce held an after-hours mixer Thursday at St. Charles Bowl, 2520 W. Main St., St. Charles.

A no-refusal operation conducted by the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office during the Fourth of July holiday resulted in three people being charged with drunken driving.

It is designed to expedite the booking process for those charged with driving under the influence. During a no-refusal event, police work with an assistant state’s attorney to quickly obtain a search warrant to compel a DUI suspect to submit to a blood-alcohol level test.

Each of the three who were arrested agreed to provide a blood-alcohol sample.

Two breath samples and one blood sample were submitted. Illinois law states that a person is presumed to be unlawfully intoxicated for the purposes of operating a motor vehicle if his blood-alcohol level is 0.08 or higher.

Elburn police charged William E. Grimes, 51, of the 300 block of West Nebraska Street, Elburn, with two counts of driving under the influence of alcohol.

In addition, St. Charles police charged Lloyd T. Gardner, 68, of Osage Drive in Franklin, with two counts of driving under the influence of alcohol.

Lastly, Carrie R. Ketchum, 35, of the 3400 block of Oak Park Avenue, Berwyn, also was charged

by St. Charles police with one count of driving under the influence of alcohol.

The July 3 initiative was the 13th conducted in Kane County; the first was in May 2008.

The operation involved 10 Kane County police agencies – Geneva, Elburn, St. Charles, Algonquin, East Dundee, Elgin, Huntley, Pingree Grove, South Elgin and West Dundee, along with Illinois State Police District 15 and the Kane County Sheriff’s Office.

Examining health care The new marketplace opening in October will sell only one type of item – but it’s something that never has been presented in this manner before.

Oct. 1 is when open enrollment in the Health Insurance Marketplace, or the Exchange, starts in Illinois. It’s part of the federal Affordable Care Act, which, among other things, mandates that all Americans have health insurance.

The Exchange is an online portal that will serve as a central location for residents and small businesses to compare and choose from dozens of insurance plans. Six providers have proposed 165 plans, and coverage kicks in Jan. 1.

Each plan will be categorized in one of four “metal” levels – bronze, silver, gold and platinum, with bronze the lowest and platinum the highest in terms of coverage, breadth, depth and services.

Some who utilize the Exchange will qualify for subsidies or become eligible for Medicaid. Those who already have insurance don’t have to shop at the Exchange, but may want to check it out to see whether they can save on insurance costs.

State officials have said they initially expect about 500,000 residents to apply when the market opens Oct. 1, and they expect it to increase to 1 million people by 2016.

For Batavia, Campton, Geneva and St. Charles townships, for instance, the act will allow an estimated 1,704 residents, up to age 64 who are uninsured, to be-

come eligible for Medicaid.

An additional 4,235 county residents without insurance will be eligible for a subsidy to help pay costs, according to a study posted on the website of Illinois Health Matters.

The Affordable Care Act, often called Obamacare, usually elicits strong reactions. Some love it. Some hate it. We have concerns about where the money will come from to pay for its many provisions and regulations, and how much of a financial burden it will be on taxpayers and businesses. We’re also not thrilled with the federal government getting involved so deeply in personal and business decisions.

But that isn’t stopping us – and it shouldn’t stop you – from learning all we can about the Exchange and the act, and what it could mean for our personal situations.

The Kane County Chronicle is setting out to do just that – starting last Saturday and for the next six months, we plan to run an occasional series that aims to educate readers about the changes wrought by the Affordable Care Act. Some stories will focus on the Exchange, including how it could affect residents, businesses and healthcare systems. Others will focus on the numerous changes – such as the mandate to have insurance and eliminating annual limits on insurance coverage – that start Jan. 1.

No matter the topic, all of the articles aim to educate our readers so they can make decisions that are best for them.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Hard work and dedication To the Editor: During the April storms, Kane County sustained flooding along the Fox River, as well as flash floods from the heavy rains. As part of the county’s response to this disaster, many of the affected communities received assistance from the Office of Emergency Management, or OEM. This aid came in the form of sandbagging supplies, assistance with evacuations, distribution of cleanup kits and – in the aftermath – documentation of damages so Kane County would qualify for a federal disaster declaration.

What the public may not know is that these valuable emergency management team members are all volunteers.

Not only do our OEM volunteers answer the call during disasters, but Kane County residents will regularly see them working behind the scenes to help local communities. They search for lost children, direct traffic at major vehicle crash

scenes and help out at local community events, like North Aurora Days, the Sleepy Hollow and Pingree Grove Fourth of July fireworks and the Elburn Days festival.

OEM volunteers also serve as trained storm spotters who provide early warning of severe weather, provide support to the sheriff’s SWAT team and coordinate communications during major fires as members of the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System, or MABAS.

More than 80 members strong, OEM volunteers come from all walks of life, ranging from sales associates, to mechanics, to nurses, to defense contractors, to company presidents. During an average year, they donate more than 7,000 hours to our county.

Given their uniforms, commitment and professionalism, it’s easy to think these eager public servants are Kane County employees, but they’re not. They’re volunteers in every sense of the word, giving back to their community with no thought for monetary compensation.

Since OEM volunteers seldom receive acknowledgment of their hard work and dedication, I want to say that I’m proud to be associated with such a fine group of unsung heroes who work so hard to keep our county safe every day of the year.

But once East surged to a comfortable lead against Glenbrook North on Monday, forcing the Spartans to go deep into their bullpen, the Saints looked like they could name the final score, which turned out to be 15-5 in five innings in a Phil Lawler Classic Elite Eight matchup at Benedictine University.

“For the most part, their first pitcher and second pitcher were what we were expecting – good speed, they could get their off-speed [pitches] over,” East center fielder Austin Regelbrugge said. “Then … we were thinking, ‘Let’s get ahead and slaughter this team, get out of here early.’ ” In winning the opener of the double-elimination summer state finals, East (20-12-1) advances to face Libertyville – which defeated the Saints in a 4A state semifinal less than two months ago – in a 3 p.m. matchup today at North Central College.

The Saints sent six or more batters to the plate in every inning except the third, piling up 14 hits and drawing seven walks.

Regelbrugge, the Saints’ leadoff hitter, drew three of those walks after doubling in the bottom of the first.

“At the beginning [of the summer], we weren’t hitting very well, and some of the guys were missing with football and other things,” Regelbrugge said. “And then once the tournament hit, we got all our guys here, and we’ve been hitting it really well. We’d like to keep it going.”

Along with Regelbrugge’s productive evening, first baseman Ben Smith drove in four runs on two hits, shortstop Jake Milosch had three hits and three RBIs and second baseman Jake Clodi went 2 for 3 with a double, walk and three RBIs. Milosch, though, heard an earful from his dugout after his second, drastically off-line throwing error of the game.

“That’s a good sign that he doesn’t let it carry over and affect him offensively,” Asquini said. “He’s had it clean for a couple weeks but when he

tilts his shoulders a little bit when he throws, his ball goes all over the place, and he got back to that today.”

Leading 10-5 entering the bottom of the fifth, the Saints scored five more to trigger the mercy rule, capped by a two-out, RBI single from Jake Rykoskey, his second run-scoring single in as many innings.

East senior left-hander Adam Eck walked the first three batters he faced in the top of the third and exited after the third inning, with East leading, 7-4. Saints junior Kyle Cook relieved Eck, throwing the final two innings.

Asquini downplayed a rematch with Libertyville so soon after the Saints dropped the teams’ showdown in Joliet. One day later, East regrouped against Neuqua Val-

ley to take third in the state.

“Some similar guys, but very different teams than [in June],” Asquini said. “It’s a nice story and a good writeup and all that kind of stuff, but we really look forward to having to play a much better game tomorrow to beat them.

They’re definitely a quality program. We’re going to see a much better pitcher, and we’re going to have pick the ball up and throw it across the diamond to be in the ballgame.”

If the Saints top Libertyville, they’ll remain unscathed in the double-elimination event heading into Wednesday. With a loss against Libertyville, the Saints would have to play a second game today.

Ultimately, Sharpe conceded the move caused only “a little grief” after he had arranged for the printing of tickets, schedules and maps to Burgess Field. By DENNIS D. JACOBS editorial@kcchronicle.com ITASCA – Most local golfers left Itasca Country Club on Monday a bit disappointed with their performances in the first round of the IJGA Chick Evans Junior Amateur tournament, but Katie Lillie of St. Charles was an exception.

Lillie, a St. Charles North freshman, was all smiles after shooting a 79 over 18 holes.

“I was driving it well and I was able to get my second shots on the green consistently,” she said. “And when I got off the green I was able to make upand-downs fairly easily.”

Lillie never had played the

course until this week.

“I played it yesterday in a practice round, but this is my first time playing it in a tournament.” she noted. “I think it’s a really nice course. The greens are really nice and it was in really nice condition.

There are a lot of trees.”

Lillie is tied for 10th place going into today’s second round.

After today, the field will be trimmed to 16 golfers for match play competition that will determine the eventual tournament champion.

Jessica Yuen of Bolingbrook was the first-round leader in the girls competition after firing a 2-under-par 70.

She’s two strokes in front of 12-year-old sensation Lauren Beaudreau of Lemont.

Ariana Furrie of St. Charles was tied for 15th after a first round 81. The recent St. Charles North graduate started the day well with an evenpar 36 on the front nine, but she was 9-over par on the back nine.

“I don’t want to make up any excuses,” Furrie said. “My game was just not the same as the front nine.”

Furrie said her irons deserted her on the back nine.

“I either was missing greens or hitting them kind of sideways,” she said. “I was on a lot of greens on the front and

my putting was better.”

Last year about this time, Furrie was deciding she wasn’t going to play college golf. She reversed that decision and decided to compete for Wagner College, an NCAA Division I institution on Staten Island, N.Y. “It was after the [high school] season, I talked to the coach after I decided I wasn’t playing,” Furrie recalled. “He was like, ‘You should come check it out.’ … I went out and looked at it. It seemed cool.”

Kenneth Li of Westmont blistered the course for a 5-under-par 67 to take the lead in the boys’ division after the first round. He’s three strokes

ahead of a pair of Hinsdale golfers, Brendan O’Reilly and David Whinery.

Aurora Central Catholic senior Justin Prince carded a 76, putting him in a tie for 31st. The top 32 golfers on the boys side after today’s second round will advance to match play.

“I played pretty good until the last two holes, where I double-bogeyed both of them,” Prince said. “I had four birdies. I putted really good today, made a couple 30-footers, just didn’t hit my drives real well.

Crumbling asphalt could not crush the semipro Fox Valley Eagles of the Ironman Football League.

It merely sent them packing to another locale down the road.

The Elgln-based operation officially has moved its home games Patrick Sharpe from Geneva’s Burgess Field to West Aurora as Geneva concludes a capital projects plan that includes the repavement of the school’s main and Burgess Field parking lots.

Eagles owner and president Patrick Sharpe said District 304 director of facility operations Scott Ney informed Sharpe of the news in recent weeks.

“Apparently, when we agreed to go there [to Geneva] and got everything all settled, that wasn’t part of the deal,” Sharpe said. “And then all of a sudden, I get a phone call that, ‘Hey, you can’t go there because we’re redoing our parking lot.’ ” Ney could not immediately be reached for comment. Splitsville: Team USA collegiate national team right fielder Bradley Zimmer swatted his share of flies while playing defense during a two-game exhibition stint at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark last week.

The stateside humidity was a significant measure greater than the kind Team USA endured during its trip to Japan earlier this month.

“It definitely is interesting playing there,” Zimmer said.

“Playing in a different country against a group of guys that are just as talented as us.”

Japan actually proved better than the Americans, winning the 39th annual USA-Japan International Collegiate Friendly Series 3 games to 2. Team USA bowed to the Team Japan pitching staff, in awe of its arsenal of split-finger pitches.

“They had unreal splitters,” Zimmer said. “It was every single guy, whether they were starters or a relief pitcher. They all had splitters, and they were throwing them in every count.”

Garza buzz permeates Cougars’ locker room

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Inclement weather drenched Cougars’ fans chances to see Matt Garza make a rehab start in April at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.

On Monday, the righthander resurfaced, albeit on the lips of a former teammate and several would-be understudies.

The Cougars’ clubhouse buzzed with talk of the parent Cubs’ late afternoon trade of Garza to the Texas Rangers before a 5-2 loss to Lansing.

Thanks to the cellular technology, that manager Mark Johnson often jokingly makes fun of, players will stay tuned to any further activity before Major League Matt Garza Baseball’s July 31 nonwaiver trade deadline.

“They’ve got all these ‘dumb’ phones to keep up with all this stuff,” Johnson said, “so they know things before we know them most of the time.”

Rehabbing righty Scott Baker learned his one-time Cubs and Minnesota Twins teammate had been dealt as he shuttled to and from his locker and the trainer’s room.

Baker, who expects to make his third rehab start Wednesday with the Cougars (37-58 overall, 7-22 second half) as he works back from April 2012 Tommy John surgery, figured the Garza trade was only a matter of time.

“You know, he’s a top-tier pitcher, so obviously the Cubs are in a situation where they’d like to go out there and get some good players for the future,” Baker said. “And they have the opportunity to do that.”

The Cubs acquired third baseman Mike Olt and right-

handers C.J. Edwards and Justin Grimm in addition to two players to be named later.

With Edwards shining for Hickory of the Class-A South Atlantic League – 8-3 with a 1.38 ERA and 122 strikouts in 93⅓ innings – the Cubs will send him to Advanced-A Daytona.

Grimm and Olt, a power hitting third baseman, are bound for Triple-A Iowa.

Cougars reliever Matt Iannazzo, a Pittsburgh product, faced Olt in college while Olt played for Big East rival Connecticut.

“You give it some thought.

It’s nice to look back on. It’s pretty cool to look at people you’ve faced and see how far they’ve gone,” Iannazzo said.

“And I’m sure there’s hitters that have said they’ve faced people like us and gotten hits.

It works both ways.”

Lansing (41-58, 9-21) is happy to rattle the bats against anyone during a season in which it has been the victim of three no-hitters.

The Lugnuts grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first inning against Cougars righty Juan Paniagua, and Kane County drew as close as 3-2 when left fielder Reggie Golden launched a two-run homer in the second.

Lansing pitching limited the Cougars to two hits until the seventh inning, as the hosts were unable to secure a three-game sweep and split the six-game homestand.

Designated hitter Rock Shoulders just missed driving out a fastball with the bases loaded and the Cougars trailing, 5-2, in the seventh, flying out to center field on the first pitch.

Johnson was ejected for the third time this homestand in the top half of the inning after arguing a fair/foul call.

Batting as the tying run, shortstop Marco Hernandez grounded out to first base to end the game.

The St. Charles man arrived at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark with his family about an hour before Saturday night’s Cougars game but was stopped before entering the park by Cougars personnel.

Davis was told he was the 10 millionth fan in Cougars histo-

ry and, as such, was entitled to some royal treatment.

“We actually have our company picnic here today, and I actually thought it was them putting on a spoof relative to that,” said Davis, who was unaware that the team was closing in on the milestone. “But as more people came and cameras came, then it started settling in that this was really real.”

Beebe said Maddie has enrolled in classes for the fall at NIU and expects he will have to pay his own way for a year before becoming a scholarship member of the Huskies and gaining eligibility for the 2014 season.

Maddie, a 6-1, 195-pounder who redshirted last year, led Aurora Christian to the 3A football state championship in 2011, when he was Kane County Chronicle Football Player of the Year after accumulating a whopping 4,916 yards of total offense.

Best- and worst-case scenarios for Bears There’s only one best-case scenario in the NFL: You win a ring.

On the other hand, worstcase scenarios can go in a bunch of different ways, and I’ve always preferred to save the best for last, so let’s get the nasty stuff out of the way first.

The worst possible case for the Bears in 2013 starts with the possibility that hiring Marc Trestman to be the coach was not the stroke of genius Phil Emery believes it was. What if it turns out that there was a reason (or reasons) Trestman has been out of the league since 2004, and he has no more luck than Lovie Smith, Ron Turner, Mike Martz or Mike Tice had unlocking the magic we all believe is buried somewhere inside of Jay Cutler? And what if it turns out Cutler just doesn’t have the people skills or just can’t speak or understand enough NFL football to be all that he can be?

Worse yet, suppose the offensive line is no better this year than it’s been the past few years.

All of that would just mean the offense hasn’t been fixed. But where things really could get ugly is if the defense that carried this franchise over the past decade or more is no longer the domi-

Brian Urlacher was the face of the franchise for the past 13 years, and he is now retired. D.J. Williams will be more athletic than the injured Urlacher was last year, but it’s unrealistic to believe he can be the force Urlacher was. Israel Indonije was the Bears’ second-best defensive lineman, and he’s now in Detroit. The Bears are counting on 2012 first-round draft choice Shea McClellan to

emerge as a force in Indonije’s spot, but if he doesn’t, the Bears will struggle to rush the passer consistently, and that will have a ripple effect thoughout the defense.

For this defense to carry the Bears for stretches of the season, Julius Peppers, Lance Briggs and Charles Tillman will have to play like the All-Pros they’ve been. As each marches deeper into his mid-30s, their ability to do that is a major concern.

Fear that perfect storm, because, if it happens, the Bears will be a 4-12 or 5-11 team, and the fix will be at least a few years down the road.

Thankfully, that’s out of the way. And just for the record, I don’t believe there’s any chance the worst case will become reality. I also don’t believe the Bears are going to the Super Bowl, but under the heading of a bestcase scenario for this season, there is a road map the Bears could follow there.

There are a number of highly-respected NFL insiders that I’ve spoken with the past few months who believe Trestman is an offensive savant, and that Cutler is exactly what he needs to finally prove his genius to the rest of the league.

One more cause for opti-

mism is the schedule. True, based on last year’s performances, it appears to be a much tougher slate than 2012.

But it doesn’t include San Francisco and Seattle, which both beat the Bears last year, and you won’t find Atlanta on it either. Those are the only three teams in the NFC that I really couldn’t in good conscience pick the Bears to beat, short of some miraculous fall off from those clubs this year.

And it’s quite possible the Steelers and Ravens, whom the Bears will face, could be looking at somewhat sub-par years next to what we’ve come to expect from them in recent seasons.

Again, I just can’t see this team in the Super Bowl this year. But if everything I’ve laid out goes right, it’s not impossible to imagine the Bears in an NFC title game against the Niners, Seahawks or Falcons.

Much like that 4-12 disaster I diagrammed above, I don’t see the Bears in the NFC title game, but it won’t be the craziest thing that’s ever happened if it does.

BY TERRY KOVEL KOVELS.COM Jewelry has been worn for centuries as “totems,” religious or good luck pieces, or just to add beauty and color to an outfit. Brooches, often called “pins,” were made in many sizes and shapes. At first they were made of gold and precious stones to show the wearer’s wealth, but by the 17th century, imitation jewelry made of glass, faux pearls and gold-colored metal made it possible for the not-so-rich to own a pin. Designers made jewelry in the fashion of the day, from Victorian cameos to Art Nouveau enameled women in flowing gowns. Often women chose a pin that represented something in her life. Madeline Albright, the former U.S. Secretary of State (1996-2001), became known for her pins. She wore an eagle for patriotic meetings, a snake when she distrusted her visitor, a beeshaped pin when angry and zebras when she met with South Africans.

Many pins have been designed to express a personal thought: a typewriter for a writer, an apple for a schoolteacher, a ballet dancer for a performer. Designers made solid gold tigers with diamonds or copies with rhinestones. Did a prospector for gold or the owner of a gold mine order a pin sold recently that looked like a small pickax with a real gold nugget? It is made of rose gold and has added engraved designs. It was owned by someone in Colorado who sent it to Leslie Hindman Auctioneers in Chicago to be sold. An Australian bid and got it for $1,600.

Co. was founded in Milwaukee in 1892. There were many German cabinetmakers in the area and an ample supply of lumber from Wisconsin forests. The name of the company was changed to Kiel Furniture Co. in 1907, so your table was made after the name change.

The company also operated a factory in Milwaukee from 1910 to 1932.

The name of the company became A.A. Laun Furniture Co. in 1932. It is still in business. *** Q: I acquired a kerosene lamp in Utah last year. It seems to be brass and has a metal plate with the words, “Property of Pony Express Station No. 9.” What can you tell me about it?

A: The metal plate on your lamp is probably a fake. Many fake and fantasy maker or owner tags are showing up on oil lamps, lanterns and locks to suggest a connection that makes them more attractive to collectors. The oil lamps and other items themselves also are probably fakes or reproductions from India or China. The most common of these fake tags are small, brass rectangular plates with simple, nondescript lettering. The plates advertise real or fictitious companies - railroads, delivery companies and even prisons - that are desirable to collectors interested in Wild West memorabilia or railroadiana. Pony Express and Wells Fargo are two of the most often referenced. The items may be nice collectibles, just don’t expect them to be real.

Q: I have an old safe. It’s 47 inches high by 32 inches wide by 27 inches deep and stands 8 inches off the floor on wheels. The door, which has a combination lock, reads “Barnes Safe & Lock Co., Greensburg, Pa.” There is a gold band painted on the door edge and decorations in the corners. The safe has an inner door with key lock and This unusual solid gold pin looks like a miner’s pick ax stuck on a gold nugget. It sold interior compartments. When was for $1,600 at a Leslie Hindman auction in this safe made? Value?

Pasadena, Tex., in 1946 and became one of the largest manufacturers of cap guns in the world. The company made a series of “Stallion” cap guns in various sizes with different model numbers from 1950 to 1961.

The first one, the Stallion 45, was the “Toy of the Year” in 1950. They were made to look like the Colt 45 Peacemaker and had a revolving cylinder. Smoke came out of the barrel when the “bullets” were fired.

Since your gun is relatively heavy and doesn’t have moving parts or shoot caps, it may have been a reproduction piece made as a paperweight or display item. Nichols Industries moved to Jacksonville, Tex., in 1954. It was sold to Kusan in 1965 and became Nichols Kusan. The company continued to make many of the Nichols cap gun models.

A: In 1845 Thomas Barnes, a blacksmith, and his brother-inlaw, Edmund Burke, a locksmith, established the Burke & Barnes Safe Manufacturers Co. in Pittsburgh. The company made iron cellar doors, grillwork and strong boxes. After the great Pittsburgh fire of 1845, Burke & Barnes experimented with designs for a fireproof safe. Soon after the Civil War, Barnes perfected a seven-flange door safe, which became world famous as the best protection against fire ever invented.

Burke retired in the early 1870s and the company name was changed to Barnes Safe & Lock Co. In 1914 the company built a main shop, a filing room and a carpenter’s shop in Greensburg, Pa. It made safes, bank deposit boxes and fire-proof chests until the 1920s. Your safe was made between 1914 and the early 1920s. Barnes safes have sold for $300 up to about $500. The value depends on condition.

Q: I have an old table brought here from Germany years ago. There is a mark on the bottom that says “Kiel Furniture Co.” Can you tell me anything about the maker?

A: Stories about things handed down in a family don’t always turn out to be true. Your table didn’t come from Germany; it was made in Wisconsin. Kiel Manufacturing

ore than 11 million years ago, a huge volcanic eruption in what is now Idaho blanketed northeastern Nebraska with about a foot of ash.

Many of the animals in the area, which later came to be called Ashfall, were grass eaters. As they foraged through the ash to find and eat grass, they breathed in the fine, deadly

ash. Within a few days, their lungs had filled with ash, and they suffocated.

Over the next few days, winds blew the loose ash around. Eventually the ash settled in the lowest places. The fossils that Voorhies found were in an ancient watering hole that got covered by about eight feet of ash. The ash covered the animals completely, keeping their remains safe from predators and other destruction for millions of years.

“Near sundown on a long day of fossil prospecting,” Voorhies remembers, “I was walking along the valley rim above a creek. In cuts and slopes, erosion had laid bare a bed of silvery gray volcanic ash— the fossil-bearing kind—sandwiched between layers of sandstone.”

Voorhies discovered part of a baby rhinoceros skull sticking out of the ash. As Voorhies dug deeper, he found an entire baby rhinoceros skeleton! The skeleton was fully articulated, which means that all the bones were still intact and neatly laid out in order.

Over the next few days, Voorhies and his team discovered 12 more complete skeletons from an area no larger than your classroom.

here is no other site in the world like Ashfall. Rhinos, horses, camels, birds, and turtles were all caught in the falling ash. Their quick death and burial preserved not only their skeletons, but in some cases the food in their stomachs when they died. The remains of undigested food help scientists understand the plant life and eating habits of animals that lived millions of years ago.

Wife of alcoholic should not be buying booze Dear Abby: It happened again today! I was buying several bottles of wine and a six-pack of beer along with my other groceries. While I was standing in the checkout line, someone behind me said the predictable, “I wish I was going home with you!”

I’m married to an alcoholic, and it makes me so sad that people think a lot of alcohol is “fun.” It’s a tragedy for our family to see a great husband, father and grandfather slip into a stupor each day.

I’m asking those out and about to think before you comment, because alcohol is not something to celebrate. – Wife Of An Alcoholic Down South Dear Wife: Why are you buying large quantities of liquor for your alcoholic husband? When you do, you enable him to feed his addiction. If I ever heard of someone who should attend Al-Anon meetings, it is you. Al-Anon was started by the wife of an alcoholic who was just like your husband.

There can be multiple causes of sleeping problems Dear Doctor K: I fall asleep just fine, but then I wake up around 4 a.m. It’s too early to get up, but I can’t fall back asleep. Help!

Dear Reader: Practically everyone has sleep problems occasionally. And a lot of people have sleep problems often. Sometimes it’s trouble falling asleep. Sometimes, as in your case, it’s trouble staying asleep. And sometimes it’s just waking up unrefreshed, even though you think you’ve slept soundly.

Sleep doctors call waking up in the middle of the night “sleep-maintenance insomnia.”

That’s difficulty staying asleep, particularly waking too early and struggling to get back to sleep.

When my patients tell me they keep waking up at night for no good reason, I ask them if they wake up once or repeatedly.

Sometimes they wake up just once, a few hours before they want to wake up – as seems to be the case with you. That can be a sign of depression, even in people who aren’t aware that they are depressed.

At least as often, patients say they wake up multiple times at night, not just early in the morning. There’s no good reason: The

They just wake up.

Sometimes the problem is a stressful day. You lay your head on the pillow, and events from the day keep streaming through your brain. You’ll benefit from relaxation techniques. We’ve discussed those before in this column, so no more detail here. Consider meditation, deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation or biofeedback.

Sometimes the problem is stimulants – stimulant medicines or an alcoholic “nightcap” before bed. Alcohol makes many people sleepy and helps them fall asleep.

But a few hours into sleep, alcohol becomes a stimulant to the brain and causes people to awaken easily.

Sometimes the problem is pain. A person with arthritis, for example, may have joints that ache – not so much that they are aware of pain during the night,

but enough to stimulate the brain.

Some people with this problem sleep a lot better if they take an aspirin or acetaminophen pain pill at bedtime.

When depression, life stresses, stimulants or pain are not the cause, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can be helpful.

Working with a therapist, you’ll learn new ways to think about your sleep problems and develop better strategies for dealing with those problems.

For example, you may believe that you need eight hours of sleep and that you won’t be able to function the next day if you don’t get that much. Some people do need an average of eight hours a night, but still can function fine after one or two nights of less sleep.

CBT can help change such beliefs, making it easier to relax and fall back asleep.

Finally, I’ve put a list of socalled “sleep hygiene” tips – habits that promote healthful sleep – on my website, AskDoctorK.com.

The caller may be thinking of committing suicide or is concerned about someone they know who may be thinking about it.

I was very surprised to discover that his mother and father are both alcoholics.

They are always trying to get my husband and me to drink with them even though I’m pregnant. Both of them work and I keep the house clean, but I never please my motherin-law, who constantly calls me a slob.

I’m very depressed and want my family to return to my parents’ house. My husband wants me to stand up to his mother, but I don’t feel that I should.

Dear Nameless: Every marriage has its trials, and you’re definitely in the midst of one. Clearly the best situation is for you, your husband and your daughter to move into a place of your own.

I assume you are financially unable to do so right now, but that should be the goal you and your husband set and work toward with determination.

There’s bound to be some friction when you’re living with your in-laws, or with anyone at all for that matter, but some of your husband’s parents’ behavior – for example, trying to force a drink on a pregnant woman – is simply unacceptable.

It’s up to your husband to insist that his parents show respect to you and treat you like their daughter.

He may feel that this puts him in a bind, but he needs to put forth his best effort on your behalf.

For your part, you should be patient, both with your husband and your in-laws, and do everything you can to keep the family together in this trying phase of your life.

Working toward the mutual goal of financial independence and your own place should pull you and your husband together and give you the hope and strength you need to endure the present circumstances.

A bridge player should live with the “TRADE” acronym in his mind, whether as declarer or a defender. The second letter stands for read the lead. Third hand should use the information being supplied by the opening lead to guide his defense – as in this example deal.

South is in four spades. West leads the heart two. What should East do after declarer calls for dummy’s three?

Note that South’s jump to four spades almost guarantees at least a five-card suit. Since North can raise to two spades with only three-card support when he has a singleton somewhere, if South has only four spades and sufficient strength at least to try for game, he should rebid in notrump or another suit. If North has four spades, he will commit to that suit. (Well, if he is exactly 4-3-3-3 with four weak spades, he might pass out three no-trump.)

There seem to be two ways to try to gain four defensive tricks: one heart and three clubs, hoping declarer has king-third of clubs and West ace-third; or three hearts and one black-suit trick.

First, though, what was West’s lead?

His lowest heart, and when a defender leads an unbid suit (at any trick), low from length guarantees at least one honor in that suit. And given the board, what honor must West hold?

Right – the king. So East should play his jack, expecting to win the trick, cash his heart ace, and play a third heart. Later, West’s spade ace will defeat the contract.
