By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Steve Spear – the St. Charles man running across the country to provide clean water for an African village – arrived in downtown St. Charles late Saturday morning, sweaty but in good spirits.

“This is awesome,” Spear, 49, said of the hometown rally celebration near Dick Pond Athletics on North Second Street. “I feel like a kid in a candy shop.”

Spear is running from Los Angeles to New York as part of Team World Vision, one of the fundraising programs for World Vision. He hopes to raise $1.5 million to build a clean water and sanitation system for 30,000 people in Kenya.

Thoughts of one Kenyan, a 7-year-old girl named Winnie whom he met only once, keep him motivated to run 35 miles a day, five days a week, he said. He said she walks six miles every day for water – contaminated water.

“That definitely is a motivation for me to keep moving day after day,” said Spear, who gave up his post as pastor at Willow Creek Community Church in West Chicago.

With 840 miles to his final destination, Spear has raised about $129,000, said his 20-year-old daughter, Chelsea Spear.

“He’ll do what it takes to get it done, even after the run,” she said.

Chelsea Spear joined her father in Amarillo, Texas, early last month, although

she doesn’t run alongside him because of an injury, she said.

His dedication has been amazing, motivating and inspiring, she said.

Willow Creek parishioner Suzanne Zafiriou agreed.

“He’s an amazing man to just really take this leap of faith and what he felt God wanted him to do,” Zafiriou said.

Zafiriou and her 18-yearold daughter are among those who have visited Steve Spear on his route. They visited him in Oklahoma soon after Father’s Day, Zafiriou said.

“It was a lot of fun to catch up with him on the road,” she said.

Wanting to support him, Zafiriou will hold a fundraiser at her salon, Suzanne Denee Salon & Day Spa, 3861 E. Main St. in St. Charles, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. July 29. All proceeds of the Cut and Run will benefit Steve Spear’s Running for Water campaign.

The minimum suggested donation will be $20.

“I really want to support this effort as much as I can,” Zafiriou said.

BLACKBERRY TOWNSHIP – Len Monson readily concedes he would have chosen to suit up, mount up and take the field no matter the occasion.

But to have the chance to compete, while raising money for a local nonprofit promoter of the arts?

Monson of Batavia said that makes playing the sport he loves that much better.

“This is a really good thing here. But I’d be playing here today, anyway,” he said, with a grin and a wink.

Monson was among a dozen polo players competing Sunday in the annual Blackberry PTF Seniors’ Tournament at the Blackberry Polo Club field in Blackberry Township, just west of the intersection of Bliss Road and Main Street Road.

The event, which has been run for years, benefits the Batavia Arts Council and Batavia’s Shakespeare on Clark production. It was sponsored by Batavia businesses Confident Aire and Aliano’s Ristorante.

Julane Sullivan, director of Shakespeare on Clark, said the fundraiser is critical to the ability of both nonprofit organizations to continue their work.

She said the polo match is the largest fundraiser event for each organization annually.

The polo match was again hosted this year by George and Barb Alexander, who own the polo club grounds

and run the polo club.

The event drew several dozen spectators from the region, and players from Kane County and from as far away as Milwaukee and Minneapolis.

Buzz Rackley of Elburn, who served as the match’s referee Sunday, said the club itself has about 50 members from throughout the Chicago area. Together with players from elsewhere, the members play in matches on weekends throughout the summer, as well as on certain weekdays.

He said the weather Sunday, with sunny skies and temperatures of 80 to 85 degrees, was nearly ideal for polo.

“It’s very weather sensitive,” Rackley said. “If it rains too much, the field becomes too slippery.

“Fortunately, it rained other places last night, but not here so much.”

Monson said events like Sunday’s tournament help to boost the sport’s visibility. But he acknowledged that polo, with its complex rules and strategies, and its expensive cost of entry, could be difficult to take up, even for those with a strong desire.

He noted, for instance, that Sunday’s match required 50 horses and 55 people working in support.

“I’ve been playing for 30 years,” Monson said. “And I play here all the time, three or four times a week, because I love it.

“And you’ve got to love it.”

The Explorer program gives teens “a doorway to the fire service,” Miller said.

The program teaches young adults medical and firefighting skills, among others.

Senior adviser Rob Stevens, a firefighter and paramedic for the fire district, said this is the first year the Explorers worked the Kane County Fair. The money the fair gives them for their services will go toward training equipment for the post, Stevens said.

On Friday, Stevens and Miller were assigned to the small air conditioned first aid station on the east side of

the fairgrounds.

They were ready to help fairgoers who came to them, such as those needing a bandage for a blister, and they rose from their chairs the moment they heard a girl was sick near a funnel cake booth.

“I’m really proud of these guys,” Stevens said. “They’re the future of the fire service.”

That’s especially true of Miller. The recent Geneva High School graduate, along with several other Explorer graduates, are set to start as paid-on-call personnel in September, Stevens said.

Those interested in becoming an Explorer may call Stevens at 630-365-6855, he said.

Participants must be 14 to 20.

ST. CHARLES – As Kane County Fair attendees Saturday indulged in sweets and stood in line for such amusements as the fun house and Ferris wheel, 17-year-old Joe Miller sat near the first aid station, ready to help those who became sick or injured.

On average, one person needed help every hour, usually with cuts and scrapes or heat-related issues, such as dehydration, he said.

“Drink water, more than anything else,” Miller said of what fairgoers had to do to stay well in the heat this weekend.

The fair, which began Wednesday, came to an end Sunday night.

Earlier in the week, fairgoers could save on admission by bringing a nonperishable food item. Donations filled four skids, organizers said.

The skids were split between two food pantries.

“We are very grateful to everyone who donated four skids of nonperishable food to help our fellow neighbors,” Larry Breon, Kane County Fair board president, said in a written statement.

“Our community is in desperate need of food this summer, and we were happy to donate their generosity with the Interfaith Food Pantry in Elgin and FISH [Friends I Shall Help] in Carpentersville.”

Cougars shower 10 millionth fan with gifts on rainy night JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Rich Davis suspected a hoax.

The St. Charles man arrived at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark with his family about an hour before Saturday night’s Cougars game but was stopped before entering the park by Cougars personnel.

Davis was told he was the 10 millionth fan in Cougars history and, as such, was entitled to some royal treatment.

“We actually have our company picnic here today, and I actually thought it was them putting on a spoof relative to that,” said Davis, who was unaware that the team was closing in on the milestone. “But as more people came and cameras came, then it started settling in that this was really real.”

Davis, a St. Charles Bank & Trust executive out of the bank’s Elgin location, has lived in St. Charles for 14 years, and said he and his wife, Tammy, have gone to a handful of Cougars games most years since their sons – 11-year-old Michael and 8-year-old Matthew – have been in the picture.

Word of his lucky designation spread fast. Just a few minutes later, one of his son’s former travel baseball coaches sent a congratulatory text message.

“It said ‘Really, 10 millionth fan?’ So obviously I think the Cougars posted it to Facebook really fast, and that’s how he found out,” Davis said. “I thought he was at the game and he heard the announcement.”

Davis, who was greeted on his way into the park by Cougars general manager Curtis Haug and mascot Ozzie T. Cougar, sat in the right field patio area as part of the St. Charles Bank & Trust contingent for the Cougars’ 8-4, rain-shortened win against the Lansing Lugnuts.

Davis threw out a ceremonial first pitch before the game and was whisked to a team office just before the storm hit to be presented an extensive gift package that included 10 $100 bills, 10 Cubs tickets and a 10-game ticket package for the Cougars’ 2014 season.

But it was some of the more lasting touches that Davis said will resonate deepest, including a Cougars jersey and banner that both read “10 Millionth Fan.” “I love having three-dimensional things that remind me of important things in our lives so things like the bat and the jersey are really cool because

The Cougars are the first Class A team to hit the 10 million attendance mark, according to the team’s news release, in which Haug said “this evening’s milestone will be remembered for years to come, and we can’t begin to express our gratitude to each and every fan who has attended a Cougars game since our first season in 1991.”

As for the game, the Cougars won for only the sixth time in 27 tries during what has been a brutal second half of the season. First baseman Dan Vogelbach helped the Cougars dig out of an early 3-0 hole by going 2 for 2 with an RBI double and a walk.

“We could easily come to the park every day and just be ‘We’re here, and

let’s get this over with,’ but I think we have a bunch of guys in the locker room and in the dugout that want to win so bad that we’re not going to cash it in until the final game,” Vogelbach said.

Cougars manager Mark Johnson said the final six weeks of the season will be about “weeding the guys out” who don’t have the mental toughness to play through adversity and fatigue.

“Definitely a character tester for everybody, staff included,” Johnson said. “We may never have another season like this again. I’ve only probably been through one like this in the last 20 years, as a player. It doesn’t happen very often.”

An announced crowd of 10,587 easily surpassed the 2,000-plus fans needed to reach the 10-million mark since the team set up shop in Geneva in 1991.

Many of those fans scurried for the exits as a ferocious rainstorm arrived in the sixth inning, leading to a half-hour delay before the game was called.

Mid-July isn’t exactly peak season for high school sports, but Tri-Cities baseball fans had to love what they saw this week nonetheless.

The final four teams in the Phil Lawler Summer Classic St. Charles Regional were Batavia, Geneva, St. Charles East and St. Charles North.

Couldn’t have worked out any better on the local front, especially with East playing North and Batavia facing Geneva. All of the teams exhibited plenty of cause for optimism for the season that counts (next spring), even with some of the teams’ top players otherwise engaged this week with travel ball in lands far, far away.

Several of the players that were slightly under the radar this past season (like Geneva’s Ben Chally and North’s Jack Dennis) served notice that they’re poised for monster senior seasons, and East proved its pitching should be just fine, thank you, despite losing a bunch of quality arms to graduation.

Lots can happen between now and March, but Sly’s going to make an early UEC River prediction and say that Batavia is going to prevail in 2014, and this time, the Bulldogs won’t have to share the honors.

When at full strength, the Bulldogs have the best blend of speed, extra-base hit potential and depth offensively, and there doesn’t appear to be dominant enough pitching elsewhere to close the gap via the mound. But it won’t be easy for Batavia to, at least not with the talent that’s been on display around the area.

Lastly for now, good luck to the Saints in the summer Elite Eight next week. To have finished third in the spring, then qualify for the Elite Eight less than six weeks later shows why so many people were excited to welcome Len Asquini and Co. back to the Saints’ dugout a few years ago. That program is hotter than the mid-July sunshine.

ore than two hours before a Single-A Kane County home game on a warm July morning, second baseman Gioskar Amaya fields a grounder, prepares to throw to first base and then it comes.

“Pay attention,” Johnson adds.

In the Cubs’ organization, particularly at the lower levels, such as Kane County, there is a heavy emphasis on the importance of pre-game work. That’s true in most baseball organizations. In some regards, that work – which includes drills centered on fundamentals – is more important than the games themselves.

“Hopefully, the work that’s done early goes into the game at some point throughout the season,” Cubs director of player development Brandon Hyde said.

Each coaching staff in the minors is given the responsibility of creating a daily pre-game plan, which can be influenced by what time the game starts, travel plans or weather conditions, although the Cubs provide a format with expectations to every manager.

On Friday, it was the pitchers’ turn to take fielding practice. They spent 30 minutes before batting practice working in the 90-degree heat as Johnson hit hard grounders.

Pitcher Felix Pena jumped in the air, snagging the ball and delivering a perfect throw home.

“Way to go,” Johnson shouted.

Days are often long without much free time. Johnson typically logs 12-hour days, creating pre-game routines and, at this point in the season, updating each player’s development plan, which the player and coach eventually sit down to discuss.

“They push us. They push us to the limit, and that’s the way it should be,” Vogelbach said.

For night games at home, players often arrive at the ballpark four hours before game time. Johnson estimates the minor leaguers work about 200 straight days from spring training and minicamp to instructional league.

INDIVIDUAL DEVELOPMENT VS. WINNING Ultimately, minor league wins don’t matter. A successful team doesn’t translate to major league talent just as a team that struggles to win, such as the 35-57 Cougars (worst in the Midwest League), is not necessarily unproductive.

To reach the majors, minor league players need to trust

the process. In addition to the pre-game routine, which can run nearly two hours, players in the Cubs’ organization have homework – mandatory neuro scouting tests.

Each day during a homestand – and once while on a road trip – position players take the test, the same one Vogelbach took in 2011 during a pre-draft workout with the Red Sox when Theo Epstein was still with Boston.

Some of the tests, which can take five to 20 minutes on a computer or iPad, focus on timing, where players watch a pitcher throw different pitches and they must wait until it gets into the box before hitting the space bar. Others force players to swing at an onscreen pitch when it’s white and reaches the box or lay off if it’s red.

“It helps your hand-eye coordination, helps your reaction time to lay off pitches,” Vogelbach said. “I think we definitely have an upper hand on that.”

The Cubs hired a Latin American liaison, Rey Fuentes, to teach English. Cougars starting pitcher Felix Pena, a 23-year-old born in San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic, appreciates the impact learning English can have on his quality of life on and off the field – even though that means attending the hour-and-a-half English classes from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., most recently Friday and Saturday.

Dear Abby: My husband retired and we thought we were fulfilling our lifetime dream when we moved to the beach, but our dream has turned into a nightmare. Our family never wanted to visit us this often before.

When they come, no one even brings along so much as a bottle of water. My grocery bill has skyrocketed, and I’m sick of playing the role of cook and maid while they have a wonderful time.

I’m ready to move back to our hometown. At least there I had a life besides cooking and cleaning. My husband wants to live here because it’s his dream, but I can’t take another year of this.

The workload is killing me.

I have been a fool for putting up with everyone having a carefree vacation at my expense. I’m so angry I’m ready to leave my husband with his dream. The last three years have been bad.

When friends and family ask why I left, should I tell them, or keep my mouth shut and build a peaceful life by myself? – Running For My Life Dear Running: Leaving your husband is not the solution. Telling the individuals who are taking advantage of your hospitality that the rules have changed is.

Set rules before guests arrive.

If it’s not convenient for you to entertain, speak up and say so when the relatives call to say they’re coming.

Make it clear that they will be doing their own laundry, buying their own groceries, etc.

And while you’re at it, understand that the reason this has gotten out of hand is partly your husband’s fault. He’s retired; he can lend a hand.

A bridge player should live with the “trade” acronym in his mind, whether as declarer or a defender. The second letter stands for read the lead. Third hand should use the information being supplied by the opening lead to guide his defense – as in this example deal.

South is in four spades. West leads the heart two. What should East do after declarer calls for dummy’s three?

Note that South’s jump to four spades almost guarantees at least a five-card suit. Since North can raise to two spades with only three-card support when he has a singleton somewhere, if South has only four spades and sufficient strength at least to try for game, he should rebid in notrump or another suit. If North has four spades, he will commit to that suit. (Well, if he is exactly 4-3-3-3 with four weak spades, he might pass out three no-trump.)

There seem to be two ways to try to gain four defensive tricks: one heart and three clubs, hoping declarer has king-third of clubs and West ace-third; or three hearts and one black-suit trick.

First, though, what was West’s lead?

His lowest heart, and when a defender leads an unbid suit (at any trick), low from length guarantees at least one honor in that suit. And given the board, what honor must West hold?

Right – the king. So East should play his jack, expecting to win the trick, cash his heart ace, and play a third heart. Later, West’s spade ace will defeat the contract.
