By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – St. Charles City Administrator Brian Townsend is leaving next month for a job in Schaumburg, officials said Friday.

Rumors have swirled about Townsend’s future with St. Charles as he and the St. Charles City Council continued to hash out details of his contract with the city.

The City Council has approved three 30-day contract extensions since Mayor Ray Rogina took office in May. Rogina described Townsend as a fine man and capable leader who will serve Schaumburg “very well.” He said he learned of Townsend’s decision Monday.

“There was an offer on the table; it sat there for a while, and he informed me he was taking this job in Schaumburg,” Rogina said.

“I wish him nothing but the best.”

Townsend made statements in news releases from St. Charles and Schaumburg.

He declined Friday to make additional comments.

Schaumburg Village President Al Larson said the Schaumburg Village Board is expected to vote on Townsend’s appointment as village manager Tuesday.

He noted there’s been “consensus and agreement” and negotiations have been completed.

Townsend’s resignation from St. Charles is effective Aug. 30.

He is expected to begin work in Schaumburg on Aug. 31, Larson said.

Townsend was appointed St. Charles city administrator by former Mayor Don DeWitte in 2005. He previously served in various roles at Schaumburg, including as assistant village manager.

“I began my career with the village so this is a homecoming of sorts,” Townsend said in the release from Schaumburg. “Schaumburg has always been a great community, and I look forward to sustaining – and enhancing – it under the leadership of Mayor Larson and the members of the Village Board.”

When current Schaumburg Village Manager Ken Fritz announced his retirement in June, Larson said “the first name that popped in my head was Brian Townsend.”

According to the St. Charles release, St. Charles will begin searching for a new city administrator immediately, but no definitive timetable has been set.

“We’re a wonderful community, and I’m not too concerned about getting a quality applicant,” Rogina said, adding the city will move toward appointing an interim administrator.

Rogina said he also isn’t worried about turnover in the Economic Development Department. Coordinator Michael Mertes recently left for a position in Arlington Heights, and Director Chris Aiston announced this week that he will retire July 31.

“We’re in capable hands,” Rogina said. “We have a fine staff.”

Townsend, his wife and three children live in St. Charles, but plan to move to Schaumburg, according to the Schaumburg news release.

Local roads to benefit from Illinois funding Road work expected this summer on Fabyan, McDonald, Route 47

By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com Money administered by the state will help improve several local roads and highways this summer and fall.

Thursday, Gov. Pat Quinn’s office announced the state would be administering more than $3 million dedicated to road construction projects in Kane County.

In the release, Quinn’s office said the money comes as part of the state’s Illinois Jobs Now program, which commits the state to dedicating $31 billion over 6 years to “capital construction” projects throughout the state.

Locally, the funding includes slightly more than $1.1 million for the work to widen Fabyan Parkway between Route 25 and Nagel Boulevard in Batavia to install bi-directional turn lanes in the center of the road.

Steve Coffinbargar, assistant director of transportation at the Kane County Division of Transportation, said the county has planned that project for years.

It was first awarded federal road construction money in 2009.

Those federal funds are being administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.

A contract for the actual construction of the new turn lanes is expected to be awarded next month to Geneva Construction Company of Aurora.

The work is scheduled to begin in August and will continue for about 75 to 90 days after that, Coffinbargar said.

Quinn’s office also announced $1.2 million to resurface a three-mile stretch of Route 47 from Plato Road to Route 20/Route 72 in northwestern Kane County. That

The release does not include information on when that project will begin.

Finally, Quinn’s office noted $184,077 to support resurfacing work on McDonald Road in Campton Hills from Kendall Road to the village’s eastern limit.

That contract was also awarded to Geneva Construction.

Cars vandalized, burgled in Geneva

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Several cars in Geneva were targeted by vandals and burglars, according to recent police reports.

Geneva Police Cmdr. Julie Nash said the department encourages citizens to not leave valuables in their vehicles.

“If they should have to keep valuables within their vehicles, then they are encouraged to secure them in the trunk,” Nash said.

The windows of a 2010 vehicle and 2002 vehicle parked in the 1000 block of Brentwood Place were reported broken.

Both were locked.

A black and gray Coach bag containing credit cards and $10 was taken from one, and the other had a wallet stolen, which was left in the console cup holder, according to reports.

A landscaping brick was believed to have been used to break both windows to get into the cars, reports said.

In the 800 block of Foxwood Circle, a global positioning device valued at $500 was reported stolen from a 2010 van; a stereo faceplate of unknown value was taken from a 2009 vehicle; and a stereo of unknown value was reported stolen from the trunk of a 2006 vehicle.

In the 800 block of Longmeadow Drive, the front passenger side of a 2002 car was broken with a landscape brick to steal a wallet that had been left in the car.

And in the 1100 block of Hill Road, the front passenger side window of a 2008 vehicle was reported shattered – causing $400 in damage – in order to take a $15 iPod cable.

A $2,000 laptop computer was reported stolen Monday, July 8, from a 2012 vehicle in the 1900 block of Fargo Boulevard. Also taken was a black canvas briefcase and cell phone valued at $175.

All but the last incident were reported to have taken place July 7.

8LOCAL BRIEF Burlington Fall Fest to kick off Sept. 8 BURLINGTON – The Burlington Fall Fest is scheduled to kick off at 11 a.m. Sept. 8 with all sorts of activities, live music and a car show at Burlington Park, 401 Park St., Burlington.

Smith, 23, is planning an appearance from 2 to 4 p.m.

Sunday at the Kane County Fair in St. Charles, where she’ll be raising money for the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals – a charity

that helps provide comfort and treatment to sick children. Her goal is to raise at least $8,000 for the organization before competing in the Miss America competition in September.

“We try to raise as much money as we can,” she said.

“In order to compete in Miss America, you have to have a goal of what you want to raise. ... It’s part of my job and my responsibility, but I’d like to go above that [goal].”

Smith, of Elmhurst, graduated from Purdue University a year ago. That’s where she participated in her first pageant and was named Miss Purdue her senior year. Last year, after competing in her

ST. CHARLES – Friday afternoon was no time for a catnap – at least not at the Kane County Fair.

Several dozen fairgoers gathered on wood bleachers and picnic tables midafternoon to watch six female tigers – Greta, Margo, Mohine, India, Ada and Misty – show off such tricks as jumping through hoops and walking on high wires.

Trainer Brunon Blaszak lured them from their shaded resting area, sometimes chiding them for their sluggishness.

“Hey, this is no time to be lazy,” he told Greta, a 500-pound royal Bengal tiger, as she laid down moments after emerging from her cage and into the secure performance ring.

Ex-County Board chairman resigns from Metra board

By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A former Kane County Board chairman who represents the county on Metra’s board of directors has resigned.

Mike McCoy submitted a resignation letter to Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen on Friday, effectively ending his two-year stint on the commuter rail agency’s board.

In the letter, McCoy said he did not “have the time or desire to continue serving.”

He referenced the unfolding controversy within Metra surrounding the resignation of former Metra CEO Alex Clifford.

McCoy, who voted to approve a controversial $718,000 severance package, said it was approved to prevent Clifford from filing a threatened lawsuit against Metra.

Clifford has alleged he was pressured by Illinois politicians, including Illinois

House Speaker Mike Madigan, to either hire politically connected people or raise the pay of others.

Metra’s board chairman announced Friday that he wants to hire Patrick Collins, a former assistant U.S. attorney, to investigate the agency.

In his letter, McCoy said he voted in favor of the Clifford severance package because he did not believe Clifford was capable of leading Metra any longer; he believed Metra would spend more money defending itself against Clifford’s lawsuit; and he believed the threatened lawsuit distracted the agency from “the more important business of running a commuter railroad.”

He noted also that he had pushed for the release of an April 3 memo in which Clifford outlined his allegations.

Lauzen said he accepted McCoy’s resignation.

“I understand how important a good reputation is,” Lauzen said. “I respect his decision and his rationale behind it, and I appreciate his service.”

Kane County Board member Drew Frasz, R-Elburn, who serves as chairman of the county’s transportation committee, said he never doubted McCoy’s integrity.

“In this state, unfortunately, things can get so down and dirty, that good people, like Mike, get driven away,” Frasz said.

Lauzen said he intended to launch a process quickly to replace McCoy. But he said he does not envy the job ahead of anyone on the Metra board.

“They have a really, really tough problem to solve,” Lauzen said.

The 4-H exhibit area is set to close at 5 p.m. Sunday. A milking derby is set for 5:30 p.m. Saturday in the 4-H livestock arena.

Blaszak, a third-generation tiger handler from Florida, plans to show off the tigers at 2:30, 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, he said, advising people to look for the orange tent.

He acknowledged the heat makes the felines slow, but noted they are lazy by nature.

They sleep about 15 to 20 hours a day, he said.

Holding both a command stick and a meat stick, Blaszak guided the tigers through the show, rewarding them with a piece of raw meat once they completed their stunt.

The tigers, who ranged in age from 4 to 16, respond to voice and hand commands, Blaszak said. He said some tricks, like jumping, come naturally to them while others take months. For example, he said, the high-wire walk took India eight months to learn.

Blaszak said the tigers enjoy performing.

“I can definitely see it,” he said.

David (Jeannine) Konie, serving in the U.S. Army in Germany and Christina (John) Gilbert of Batavia; and three great-grandchildren.

RICHARD R. ‘DICK’ TRIEST Born: Feb. 24, 1929; in Chicago Died: July 18, 2013; in St. Charles ST. CHARLES – Richard R. “Dick” Triest, 84, of St. Charles, passed away Thursday, July 18, 2013, at his home in St. Charles surrounded by his loving family.

He was born Feb. 24, 1929, in Chicago, the son of Raymond and Minnie (DesCourouez) Triest.

After graduating from Hyde Park High School, Dick attended the University of Chicago. He went on to serve his country in the Korean Conflict as a 13th Engineer. He was a volunteer fireman for St. Charles for 20 years. Dick owned and operated Ray’s Evergreen Tavern in St. Charles for many years. In his free time, he enjoyed many hobbies, which included Rolle Bolle at Ray’s, bowling in two leagues – Moline’s and Ray’s, playing on a softball team for Ray’s, Pigeon

Flying with St. Charles Pigeon Flying Club and fishing in Canada and Minnesota.

He enjoyed traveling, rarely missing spring training in Arizona to see his beloved Cubs, or a quick trip to the U.P. for fishing and relaxation. Besides the Cubs, Dick was a big fan of all Chicago teams. Although never married, Dick found great joy in spending time with his extended family of siblings, nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

He will be greatly missed by all those whose lives he touched.

He is survived by his sister, Barbara (Phil) Baert of St Charles; nieces and nephews, Michael Baert of Genoa, Michelle Ackmann of Hampshire, Daniel (Sue) Baert of Cortland, Anthony (Lori) Baert of Sycamore, Elizabeth (Pete) Morgano of DeKalb and Julie (Dan) Jones of Dekalb; 17 great-nieces and great-nephews; and many dear cousins and friends.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents.

A few weeks ago, she was crowned Miss Illinois.

“It’s one of those moments where you have to go back later and watch it,” she said. “It was so overwhelming, exciting and shocking all at the same time.”

To stand out from the 31 other contestants, Smith said she performed an Irish dance, and said she’s a big proponent of living a healthy lifestyle.

“It’s all about being yourself and having a good time,” she said.

By winning the Miss Illinois title, Smith receives scholarship funds, which she hopes to use for graduate school as she pursues a career as a physician’s assistant.

She will compete for Miss America on Sept. 15 in Atlantic City, N.J.

GENEVA – Nellie Blanche Graham (nee Clark), 96, passed away Monday, July 1, 2013, in Geneva.

Nellie was born Sept. 26, 1916, in Pittsburgh, to Alexander and Agnes (nee Burnette) Clark, the youngest of six children. Her family moved to their adoptive hometown of Geneva, in 1928, where they operated the Texaco and Pure Oil gas stations. She graduated from Geneva High School in 1933.

Nellie was married for 62 years to Donald S. Graham, who passed away in 2000. They were members of the First Congregational Church of Geneva, where she taught Sunday school. Nellie was a librarian at the Geneva Public Library for 29 years, retiring in 1977. She volunteered for many local organizations, including the Geneva Historical Society and was a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood philanthropic educational sorority.

Nellie had a great love for her family and friends, numerous pets, books, history, traveling and her family genealogy.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald; brothers George, Kenneth and Robert; and sisters, Gertrude and Betty.

Nellie is survived by her daughter, Judith; son, Thomas (Maria); grandchildren, Michael (Nissa) and Kelly; and great-grandchildren, T.J. and Connor.

Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Sunday, July 28, at First Congregational Church of Geneva, 327 Hamilton St., Geneva.

Lois grew up mostly on Chicago’s South Side. She played the bassoon in orchestra and also the piano. Her mother was a tailor and taught her to sew well. Upon graduating from high school, she embarked on a career as a legal secretary. It was in the law office that she met the love of her life, Edward F. Jurow.

They lived on the South Side of Chicago with her parents their first year of marriage while Edward finished his third year of law school.

They bought their first house in the then-newly planned community of Park Forest and settled in to start a family of their own.

Lois was a devoted mother and accomplished homemaker. She was active in the Park Forest Women’s Club (PFWC) and the League of Women Voters. When the family moved to Olympia Fields, Lois remained active in those organizations. Through the years, she held many positions in the PFWC, from secretary to president, along the way becoming an expert in Parliamentary procedure.

She advised many in leadership positions on how to run effective meetings. She later was recruited to participate in the leadership of the Third District of Women’s Clubs, eventually becoming their president.

Lois loved being a hospital volunteer. She volunteered with St. James Hospital’s Women‘s Auxiliary helping with fundraising and service support activities.

After the family moved to St. Charles, she was very active in P.E.O. (Philanthropic Educational Organization) and volunteered at Delnor Hospital. Lois also was a member of the Calumet and Fox Valley Sail and Power Squadrons, passing several ranks including Junior Navigator during the years the family had a sail boat on Lake Michigan. For exercise, she enjoyed golf.

All her organizational experience supplied not only service and learning opportunities, but many social opportunities as well. Lois was noted as an accomplished party planner. She and her husband were known for fun-filled parties.

Lois was the navigator of the family. Two-week or longer road trips, often to western U.S. moun-

On Sept. 7 and 8, the museum will present a Civil War re-enactment at

the Batavia Riverwalk.

Trevor Steinbach of Batavia was on hand Friday at a media preview for the quilt show.

He is a Civil War medical re-enactor in the 17th Corps Field Hospital Inc. re-enactment group, which will be featured in the upcoming re-enactment in Batavia.

One of the people he portrays is Dr. Charles Bucher.

“He was the only doctor from Batavia in the Civil War,” Steinbach said. “He was an assistant surgeon in the Civil War.”

Last year’s show raised between $3,500 and $4,000 for the museum, director Carla Hill said.

“It’s the biggest fundraiser we do,” she said.

Hill said she is amazed at the variety of quilts on display and the work that has gone into them.

“There are so many stories that go along with these quilts,” she said.

“Every one in its own way is so unique.”

My thoughts: 1. Try to save at least 10% out of each paycheck. More if you’re over 45.

2. Make this saving automatic—either automatic payroll deduction or bank deduction.

Get this money put away before you lay eyes on it!

3. Getting your money set aside is more important than where it goes. If in doubt, just chose a middle of the road balanced mutual fund.

4. Always (at least, almost always) take advantage of any employer matching programs.

If your employer matches the first 6% your save, sell your dog if you have to, but save at least 6%.

Start ‘clipping” these tips. Put them on your mirror. Send them to your kids.

BATAVIA – Nicole Magerkurth of Batavia may only be 6 years old, but she already is quite the quilter.

Her two quilts are among the more than 150 historical and contemporary quilts that will be on display through Sunday as part of this weekend’s seventh annual Quilt and Textile Show at the Eastside Community Center and Shannon Hall, 14 N. Van Buren St., Batavia.

The show is presented by the Batavia Depot Museum and sponsored

by Prairie Shop Quilts in Batavia.

It is a fundraiser for the museum, and proceeds from concessions sold at the show will benefit Valley Sheltered Workshop in Batavia.

Nicole started quilting when she was 3 after seeing the show one year and becoming inspired. Nicole designed her latest quilt.

“I was using some of my favorite colors, purple and blue,” she said.

Her mother, Christina Magerkurth, is proud of Nicole’s efforts.

D-304 releases additional info on fired employees

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – After mediation by the Illinois Attorney General’s Office, Geneva School District 304 released the years worked and salaries of three fired employees that officials had initially not provided.

The three names were among 342 released after a Freedom of Information Act request seeking the names of all fired employees going back to Jan. 1, 2010.

In a response, the district provided the names, but not their years worked or salaries as requested.

“The district is not required to produce documents in response to a FOIA,” Superintendent Kent Mutchler wrote. “Therefore, the information in the attached document was compiled and any requested information not included, such as salaries, is not provided, as the district has no documents that show all of your requested information for dismissed employees.”

The Kane County Chronicle had filed a complaint with Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan’s public access counselor on both the district not

naming employees fired and not providing the additional information sought.

But after documents revealed there were just three employees recommended for dismissal following a closed session – all the other employees’ names were in meeting agendas and minutes – it was agreed the information would be released on just those three.

Terrie Harrington, a kindergarten instructional assistant at Heartland Elementary School, worked for the district for 17 years and was earning $13,758.86 in the 2012-13 school year, or $13.42 an hour.

Harrington was recommended for dismissal June 24 following a closed session hearing.

Deborah Regelbrugge, a special education assistant at the preschool, who was fired April 22, was employed by the district for six and a half years and earned $12,518.76 in the 2012-13 school year, or $13.19 per hour.

Daniel Benjamin, a maintenance worker at Geneva Middle School South, who was fired Nov. 28, 2012, had worked for the district nine years and in 2012-13 earned $47,419.97, or $23.25 per hour.

Harrington and Regelbrugge had been identified by the school board in open session as “Employee A” when being recommended for dismissal; Benjamin was referred to as “a specific employee” in open session.

It was the district’s practice not to name employees recommended for dismissal following closed session, and this was the case for these three, states an email response from district FOIA Officer Kelley Munch.

“If it is deemed by the Office of the Illinois Attorney General that this practice is in violation of the Open Meetings Act, the district will take the appropriate steps to remedy this,” Munch stated. “We strive to be in compliance with state and federal mandates and look forward to the Illinois Attorney General’s opinion on this matter.”

Public bodies can close meetings for specific reasons, such as employee discipline, but action must be taken in open session.

The Open Meetings Act requires that, “Final action shall be preceded by a public recital of the nature of the matter being considered and other information that will inform the public of the business being conducted.”

The Chronicle filed a request for administrative review with the Attorney General’s Office, alleging that the Open Meetings Law was violated when school board members did not state the name of the employees being recommended for dismissal.

Enrollment in the Health Insurance Marketplace, or the Exchange, will open Oct. 1 as a centralized location for small businesses and individuals and families to shop for health insurance. In Illinois, there will be four “metal” levels of coverage – platinum, gold, silver and bronze – with dozens of insurance options offered at every level. training community organizations to act as counselors for those needing assistance understanding premiums, deductibles, copays and other insurance issues.

Quinn announced Wednesday that the state received a $27 million federal grant to disperse to 44 community organizations for the training and outreach that will be needed.

“We know that many of those of who are eligible for subsidized coverage through the ACA have never, or rarely, had access to comprehensive health coverage,” said Jennifer Koehler, director of the marketplace. “We have a

big job to do between now and Oct. 1 in terms of educating our target population.”

Claffey said in addition to the Oct. 1 opening date, Dec. 15, Jan. 1 and March are important dates to know. While open enrollment in the health insurance marketplace begins Oct. 1, coverage won’t kick in until Jan. 1 at the earliest.

March is when the marketplace will close enrollment until the following fall.

“To be covered on Jan. 1, you have to sign up by Dec. 15,” Claffey said. “There will be no payments until the insurance starts in January.”

Those who don’t purchase a plan and remain uninsured

– despite being able to afford insurance – will have to pay a penalty on federal taxes. The penalty would start at $95, or 1 percent of annual income, for working, uninsured residents before increasing significantly in each following year of going without insurance.

Many could also find benefits to purchasing insurance through the marketplace. Illinois is one of 25 states that has or is expected to accept expanded Medicaid coverage.

In Illinois, the expanded Medicaid coverage means that 600,000 residents who do not

A Health Insurance Marketplace will open Oct. 1 that will offer dozens of insurance plans to citizens and small businesses.

People who apply may qualify for lower costs on premiums or out-of-pocket costs; savings are based on household income and size.

Some people will qualify for tax credits or subsidies to help pay for their insurance, and others will be newly eligible to enroll in Medicaid.

An estimated 9 percent of adults, or 7,182 people, in Batavia, Campton, Geneva and St. Charles townships are uninsured. Of those people, the following will be eligible for Medicaid or a subsidy once the Insurance Exchange opens: • 1,704 people will be newly eligible for Medicaid.

• 4,235 people will be eligible for tax credit in the insurance marketplace.

• 1,243 people can use the insurance marketplace but don’t qualify for a tax credit.

• 1,341 people are undocumented noncitizens and may remain uninsured regardless.

But expect to have to sift through much more information than sugar and calorie content to figure out which one is best for you.

In the largest step toward fully implementing the Affordable Care Act, Illinois will open its Health Insurance Marketplace, often referred to as the Exchange, on Oct. 1.

The Exchange is a website that will serve as a central location for residents and small businesses to compare and choose from dozens of insurance plans. Six providers – including well-known companies like Blue Cross Blue Shield – have proposed 165 plans that are awaiting approval.

Each plan will be categorized in one of four “metal” levels – bronze, silver, gold and platinum – with bronze the lowest and platinum the highest in terms of coverage, breadth, depth and services.

Mike Claffey, spokesman for the health care division in Gov. Pat Quinn’s office, said specific prices for plans would be made public in September after the federal government reviews and approves the plans state officials recommend at the end of July.

“The team has been working extremely hard to get everything in place for an Oct. 1 launch,” Claffey said. “There are a lot of departments working together to help put the pieces in place.”

State officials have said they initially expect 500,000 residents to seek insurance when the Exchange opens Oct. 1 and expect it to increase to 1 million people by 2016. State officials have been

Clarke Group, a mosquito control company, is expected to move its headquarters to 675 Sidwell Court by the end of the year or early next year.

It is the first beneficiary of a pilot program, approved Monday by the City Council, that’s designed to attract high-technology businesses and encourage the employment of local workers.

Under the agreement, the city will provide up to $275,000 over five years – with the money coming from the city’s general fund – to Clarke Group. The city will provide a set level of funding, declining annually during the five year-agreement, if the company creates a certain number of jobs with an annual salary of $50,000 or greater.

Additional monetary incentives would be paid if the company hires local residents or interns.

The company anticipates creating 71 new jobs with an average salary of $80,000, and 15 additional jobs with an average salary of $60,000 likely will come within the next five years. Clarke also plans to pour $4 million in capital improvements into the property.

Attracting new businesses to St. Charles, with a focus on hiring local people, benefits all area residents. An impact study from Northern Illinois University’s Center for Governmental Studies showed Clarke would generate an estimated $28.1 million annually in economic activity in the local region.

We welcome Clarke to the community and hope others follow its lead in locating their companies in the Tri-Cities.

Thumbs down: Thumbs down to serving alcohol to minors during Swedish Days.

Sergio’s Mexican Cantina, Fiora’s Restaurant, and EvenFlow Music and Spirits were cited for serving underage drinkers during an annual police compliance check during the festival.

The owners of Sergio’s and Fiora’s waived their rights to a hearing and each agreed to pay a $1,000 fine and have their liquor licenses suspended for one 24-hour period. Fiora’s license was suspended Friday and Sergio’s will be suspended Aug. 23.

EvenFlow’s owners agreed to pay a $1,500 fine and to have their liquor license suspended from 2 a.m. Aug. 16 to 1:59 a.m. Aug. 17. Mayor Kevin Burns said the higher fine was due to an earlier infraction by EvenFlow.

This year, the 24-hour suspensions will be served within 30 days of the punishment being doled out, as opposed to waiting for next year’s Swedish Days Festival. Burns, who also serves as the city’s liquor commissioner, said penalties need to be severe and swift.

When laws governing intoxicating liquor aren’t followed – especially when the infraction is serving those not legally allowed to drink – the establishment that broke them should be punished.

The owners of Sergio’s and Fiora’s have publicly pledged to work to ensure similar incidents won’t happen again.

That’s encouraging. The money they will lose from not being allowed to sell alcohol will be a harsh reminder of their errors, and one hopes it will serve as a warning to other establishments about the importance of following the law when it comes to serving alcohol.

And yet our government refuses to prosecute these people. We have all these sanctuary cities.

Tax dollars at work I’m calling about my tax dollars at work, and as a hardworking American, paying lots of taxes – local, state and federal.

I was in Walmart last night, and the couple in front of me, who were clearly foreigners, dressed with, like, $40 jeans, $40 shoes, a pregnant wife, a kid. And at the end of their food line was, like, a 12-pack of Modelo beer, which I guess is a good beer.

They used food stamps, and coincidentally, I didn’t have much to buy ‘cause I don’t have a lot of money. I pay it all in taxes. I was out in the parking lot, and they were leaving. And they were getting in a nice shiny – I don’t know whether it was absolutely new – Cadillac Escalade with 20-inch rims.

And I think those rims run two grand. But maybe I just wanted to say how happy I am as a taxpayer and get to see how my tax dollars are being used in Illinois.

Question on qualifications I would like to know what the qualifications are to become a school board member. It would be interesting to know just what their duties are.

Costs will skyrocket [The] Tuesday, July 16, paper had an article about the construction going on at Delnor Hospital and quoted the president as saying it is part of Cadence’s larger $90 million reinvestment program.

Hospitals and large nonprofit health systems demand larger payments from Medicare and insurance companies than smaller independent private practices, surgery centers and imaging centers. To keep the nonprofit status, they spend multimillions on bricks and mortar.

The public and the insurance companies should concentrate their support on the independent groups to maintain those facilities, which provide a much better value for patients and could help control the cost of health care.

As more consolidations occur, the cost of health care will skyrocket.

Those with higher incomes also can receive a subsidy, though it will be less as the income increases.

Because the Illinois Legislature didn’t pass a governing structure and funding mechanism for an insurance marketplace, the state entered into a partnership with the federal government. The partnership puts the state in control of recommending plans, driving enrollment and educating the public while the federal government will approve the plans that can be purchased and make direct payments to carriers for those who receive subsidies.

Ann Ford, executive director for Illinois Network of Centers for Independent Living, said Oct. 1 cannot come fast enough. Her organization, which serves people with disabilities and has a center in Kane County, is one of the 44 that will receive money to train in-person counselors.

Ford, who has a disability and could not receive health insurance until she was eligible for Medicare, said the new law that requires insurance companies to accept people with pre-existing conditions will open a new world to thousands of people.

“We have a lot of outreach to do to people because many have never had insurance,” Ford said. “We can’t wait to walk them through what will finally be available to them.”

I’m responding to “English-only on the Fourth.” I understand what the person wrote about speaking Spanish at July 4. I think the only way to curb it is, basically, speak your language.

If you’re Italian, start speaking Italian in public when they are talking Spanish. If you’re Polish, start speaking Polish. You go to Walgreens and you listen to half English and half Spanish. Come on. If I went to Mexico, do you think they would speak English for me? No. Do you think I would be able to get all the free health care? No. Do you think I would get everything handed to me in Mexico? No.

The film is centered around a group of college students who suddenly vanish and no one knows what happened to them.

He said the goal is to release the film to theaters by late October or early November, and he’s hopeful that it will hit theaters all over the world.

“We have distribution partners that want to go to 2,500 theaters nationwide, and then global,” he said.

Peterka said if the company sees success with its debut film, they’ll consider stationing its operating base in St. Charles because that’s where many of the company’s shareholders call home. And Peterka, also known as “Super P-It-Forward” – with the “P” standing for Peterka – said he also hopes the company is successful so they can help send as many students as possible to college through The Somebody Fund.

“I’m on a personal mission to prove to this country that people still care, and that’s from my mother,” he said.

ST. CHARLES – The producers of a yet-to-be-released thriller film hope donations from a private screening next week in St. Charles will help send a student to college.

Mike Peterka, consultant for the film company Visionary Productions, said the screening is open to the public, and he hopes to fill about 1,000 seats at the Arcada Theatre, 105 E. Main St., St. Charles, on Tuesday. The film, “P.U.L,” which stands for “Project Urban Legend,” will start at 7 p.m., and doors open at 6 p.m.

The screening is free, but donations of any amount are encouraged to help send Illinois Bruins baseball player Bryce Cantrall, 18, of West Chicago to college.

Peterka said the mission of his nonprofit organization, The Somebody Fund, is to send as many deserving students to college as possible.

Peterka said Cantrall has lost both of his parents and has had “a tough go,” which is why he was selected as a recipient.

“We’re going to collect a pot of money and send some good kids to school,” he said.

“We’re going to interview kids and if they’ve got a true dream, then we’re gonna launch it.”

Peterka said the movie that will be shown Tuesday was shot as a “found footage documentary,” filmed in the same vein as “The Blair Witch Project.” It’s rated PG-13 and does not contain any foul language.

GOOD NATURED Pam Otto used stag beetles as amulets and the name stuck. Species names, like capreolus, our area’s most common stag, are from Greek words for various types of deer and elk.

Indeed, with roles in courtship battles as well as displays to prospective mates, the antler-like mandibles are a big part of the adult stag beetles’ life. But, as is the case with most insects, the adult chapter of the beetles’ life actually is a very small part of a much bigger story.

Stag beetles spend the majority of their lives in an immature, or larval, stage – two years for the stags in our area, and four to six years for species in other parts of the world – a stark contrast to the month or two that adults may survive.

Stag beetle larvae, known as grubs, live out their days in rotting wood, chewing and digesting cellulose and help advance a fallen tree’s decomposition. (Note: Stag beetle larvae are large – about the size of a child’s thumb – and do not eat living plant

material. If you’re finding small grubs in your lawn, they likely are the larvae of the Japanese beetle.)

That stag beetle larvae have an important job is pretty cool. But wait, there’s more. Stag beetle larvae apparently “talk” while they’re eating.

Now, as humans, we’ve probably experienced this phenomenon more times than any of us care to remember.

The garrulous relative you were paired with at wedding reception; that obnoxious person your colleagues ditched on you at a business function – we’ve all been there.

But stag beetles are way neater. Far from spewing crumbs while their mouths are full, the larvae use a

means of communication known as stridulation – rubbing one body part against another to make sound.

Crickets rubbing wings together to produce their characteristic chirps is perhaps the best-known form of stridulation.

On stag beetle larvae, the sound is produced when claws on the hind legs are rubbed against ridges on the middle pair of legs. Why these larvae stridulate is unclear, but the action surely has a purpose; many other beetle larvae are known to make sounds too. Perhaps the vibrations help the larva lay claim to a territory.

now include them on lists of protected species. Land-management practices that favor the removal of dead wood have taken away the habitat these beetles need to survive.

Without them, or their larva, essential cycling of nutrients that needs to occur in order for soil to remain fertile comes to a halt.

If you’re a gardener, or know someone who is, you can help conserve this species by promoting the use of stag beetle-friendly landscaping practices. Leave tree stumps and logs to decay naturally; avoid the use of landscape cloth, which can trap newly transformed adult beetles and block their emergence from the soil; and minimize the use of insecticides.

Even if everyone around you is getting rid of dead wood and spraying pesticide, you have an opportunity to buck the trend.

There’s no harm in going stag.

The heady aroma of fine cigars. The rise and fall of male voices, punctuated with deep, booming laughter. It didn’t take a girl popping out of a cake to tell us, a stag party was underway in the pavilion of the Hickory Knolls Natural Area.

Meanwhile, a stone’s throw away at the Discovery Center, another gathering of stags was in full swing: the Lucanidae, or stag beetles, had come out to play.

Stag beetles are the sorts of insects that are hard to miss. For one thing, their chunky bodies are an inch or more in length – pretty big, by temperate climate standards. For another, the males have prominent mandibles, branched structures that resemble deer antlers; hence the “stag” part of their name.

These large jaws also are responsible for the critter’s other common name, “pinching bug,” even though their large size renders them pretty ineffective at anything other than wrestling with other males.

The species we have in our area belong to the genus Lucanus, a name that can be traced back to the ancient Italian region of Lucania.

Baker, who gives up six runs, not dwelling on rehab start

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Cubs righthander Scott Baker treated the Cougars to dinner at a nearby Outback Steakhouse after Sunday’s rehab start at West Michigan.

Upon exiting Friday’s home start against Great Lakes, Baker’s 15.88 Midwest League ERA looked like the tab after a six-ounce sirloin and soft drink.

Mending from April 2012 Tommy John surgery on his throwing elbow, Baker admittedly scuffled during his 2⅔innings in the Cougars’ 8-6 loss to the Loons, which was shortened to seven innings because of rain.

After 60 pitches, six runs, six hits, three walks and one strikeout, all Baker knew

was his mechanics still lagged.

“I’ve been doing this for a while, so I know to sit here and dwell over this outing or try to read into it too much just really is not going to do myself any good,” said Baker, who has not made a major league start since September 2011. “Just try to make the adjustments, focus on the things that I need to work on, and really that’s all that matters right now.”

The Cougars (35-57 overall, 5-21 second half) got Baker off the hook for what could have been his second rehab loss when designated hitter Jeimer Candelario launched a game-tying, two-run homer in the fifth.

Three innings earlier, second baseman Gioskar Amaya smacked a two-run homer to

help atone for an error that prolonged the Loons’ four-run first.

The Cougars also made an error behind Baker in his outing Sunday, when he spaced four runs and six hits in three innings.

Friday marked the fourth time Kane County played behind a pitcher from the parent Cubs. Recently released reliever Shawn Camp made two appearances in June.

“I don’t think much changed for anybody [Sunday],” third baseman Giuseppe Papaccio said. “We just tried to play our game and just do what we could to make plays behind him. It didn’t go as well as we all planned, but with things like that, you just try to take it with a grain of salt. Just play, and play the same way you’ve been play-

ing.”

Baker harped on a similar refrain after struggling to find his velocity and command. The 31-year-old, who signed with the Cubs in November after the Minnesota Twins declined his option, did not hit 90 mph, a the stadium radar gun, and walked the leadoff batter all three times.

Great Lakes (45-53, 18-10), which swept the three-game series to send the Cougars to their 10th loss in 11 games, struck for three extra-base hits against Baker.

That surge was highlighted by a pair of RBI doubles from Loons center fielder James Baldwin III – the son of the former White Sox starting pitcher.

While Baker stressed it ultimately made no difference, he indicated the minor league ball is slightly smaller and more prone to movement in his various rehab outings.

“Probably, the layperson is not going to pick it up and feel the difference,” Baker said, “but you pick up enough baseballs and, you know. ...”

A 53-minute weather delay that ultimately shortened the game came with the Loons batting in the top of the eighth.

Great Lakes scored the winning run in the seventh on a Leo Rodriguez sacrifice fly. The Loons scored again on a Michael Heesch wild pitch two batters later.

I feel comfortable playing shortstop. My first year in the [Arizona Rookie League], I played second base a little bit, but the last two years, I’ve been playing shortstop because I’m comfortable playing shortstop.

I love it. We played a little bit in the Arizona league and we played the whole year in Boise last year, too. … It’s easy when you know someone like that.

What’s your approach to stealing bases?

I like stealing bases depending on the counts. If I think it’s a breaking ball [count], I like to break, steal a base.

Rain ends game early

Friday’s crowd of 6,678 pushed the Cougars’ season total to 244,280 fans in 43 home games.

Kane County attracted 215,804 fans through the same span last season.

The Cougars must draw at least 2,121 fans tonight to surpass the 10 million mark in franchise history.

They would become the first Class-A organization to do so.

Cougars shortstop Marco Hernandez, 20, marked his fourth anniversary of joining the parent Cubs organization Wednesday. An undrafted free agent in July 2009, the Dominican Republic native entered Friday’s series finale with Great Lakes batting .251 in 74 games with a team-high 12 stolen bases. With the help of right-hander and translator Lendy Castillo, Kane County Chronicle sports reporter Kevin Druley caught up with Hernandez for the latest edition of the Weekend Chit-chat, addressing Hernandez’s season to date.

St. Charles basketball players Post 342 staring help win AAU national title down elimination LEGION BASEBALL: DISTRICT 11 PLAYOFFS

It wasn’t as much what they won as who they won it with.

That’s not to detract from the AAU Division II national championship that was earned Tuesday in Orlando, Fla. But for Jake Ludwig and Jack Callaghan – St. Charles North basketball juniors – it was the longstanding history with several teammates, dating back to their St. Charles Storm days, that made their Illinois Flyers AAU triumph all the more meaningful.

“It was awesome because normally guys can’t say they’ve played with one teammate for six seasons, and I’ve been able to do it with five other guys and the same coaching,” Callaghan said. “It was a great feeling, holding that trophy with them.”

The Flyers, coached by St. Charles resident Kevin Conrad, have six St. Charles players on their team – Callaghan and Ludwig are starters, while St. Charles North’s Brendan McCarthy, St. Charles East’s Jeremy Champine and Mick Vyzral and Benet’s Jeff Conrad are among the team’s other contributors.

That core’s basketball relationship pre-dates middle school, mostly with the Storm before re-organizing into the Illinois Flyers once they hit high school, allowing them to expand the squad’s talent pool, including adding a helpful duo from Stevenson High School.

The AAU nationals took place at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports Complex, beginning July 10 and ending Tuesday, when the Flyers rallied from a seven-point deficit to beat the Arkansas Warriors, 39-36, in the championship game.

The Warriors had defeated the Flyers at the tournament the year before.

“In my mind, I was thinking win or bust but I think most of the guys on the team would have been satisfied with an Elite Eight finish,” Callaghan said. “I think most of the guys

During eight games at the tournament, the Flyers allowed an average of less than 33 points a game.

“We always based ourselves on defense and that’s kind of what we did growing up,” Ludwig said. “We weren’t really the biggest team, didn’t really have the biggest players.

Going into the Flyers, we basically based ourselves on defense because defense wins championships, and that’s what we did.”

Ludwig, a combo guard, and Callaghan, a 6-3 forward – along with shooting guard Alec Goetz – are the most experienced returnees next season for North, which lost starters Quinten Payne, Tony Neari, Justin Stanko and Kyle

Callaghan said he plans to return to North’s football program this fall after taking a year off, citing his enthusiasm for North’s new coaching staff.

Eclipse excitement: Eclipse Select’s 15U girls soccer team won a national title of its own Monday, seizing the Elite Clubs National League crown, 2-0, over Real Colorado in Henrico, Va. Marissa Bosco, of St. Charles, scored the match’s first goal, while goalkeeper Stephanie Rodriguez, of Batavia, “came up with several clutch saves throughout the match,” according to a news release from the team.

CAROL STREAM – The good news for St. Charles Post 342 is its season lives to see another sunrise.

That’s about where the causes for optimism ended Friday night, as Post 342 faces a daunting, 7-1 hole after seven innings in an elimination game against Wheaton Post 76 in the District 11 playoffs. Lightning halted the game leading up to the top of the eighth and, after about a 20-minute delay, a 10 a.m. resumption was coordinated.

Although it benefits his team in this case, the American Legion rule mandating that the teams reconvene despite the lopsided score, so late in the game, confounds veteran Post 342 coach Dale Wilderspin.

“I think it’s crazy, especially when you’re playing nine-inning games,” Wilderspin said. “There’s a lot of stuff that the Legion needs to think about seriously because we’re going to lose kids to these different traveling programs because of these stupid rules.”

If Post 342 were to pull off the improbable morning comeback, it would still need to beat Elgin twice today to advance out of the district tournament.

The starting pitching matchup tilted heavily in Wheaton’s direction as Saint Louis-bound left-hander Sam Nafziger had Post 342 shut out through five innings until Dan Berendt’s RBI single accounted for the team’s lone run.

Meanwhile, Post 342 starter Sawyer Chambers lasted 21/3 innings and was charged with all seven runs. Fellow St. Charles North product Ankur Shah kept Post 76 in check the rest of the way.

“Shah has pitched twice in relief this week, and it was basically Sawyer’s turn [to start],” Wilderspin said.

“And Sawyer has been light’s out up to this point, and

Post 342 (23-9-1) fell, 11-0, to Post 76 on Wednesday, and seems headed toward another bruising defeat in the double-elimination tournament.

If this is the end of the line, Post 342 infielder Mitch Endriukaitis will have considered it a worthwhile summer. The Geneva product missed most of the spring with a hand injury and said the season has allowed him to shake off rust before playing at Elgin Community College.

“Coming back from my hand being broken, it’s been tough, but I think I’m finally coming out of it,” Endriukaitis said. “I think I’ll be back to where I was at the beginning of the season last year.”

The 2013-2014 Season will begin Sept. 9 and, depending on the swimmers ability, they will finish in late February or early March.

Tryouts are free and will take place at the Norris Rec Center, 1050 Dunham Road, St Charles.

Swimmers will participate in a practice on their schedule day of tryouts, swimmers need to bring their suit, goggles, cap (if needed) and towel.

Tryout Dates: • Aug. 12 for swimmers 10 and younger, 5 to 6:30 p.m.

• Aug. 13 for swimmers 11 and 12, 5 to 6:30 p.m.

• Aug. 14 for swimmers 13 and over 5 to 6:30 p.m.

Families are asked to show up 10 minutes before the start of tryouts to fill out any necessary paper work. All swimmers will be participating in the entire tryout.

Earlier this year in Mission, Kan., she received kudos from PBA Hall of Fame member Norm Duke, who

watched her post the high scratch (nonhandicap) series among 15-and-under boys and girls during a Next Level Bowling Pro-Am. Norm

awarded Mabel with a new bowling ball, an autographed bowling pin, and scholarship money for her efforts and he noted that Mabel has the

potential to become a future bowling superstar.

Much like other aspiring athletes, Mabel travels around the region to participate in various tournaments but her main source of competition is the Fox Valley Junior Travel League. Between competitive events, she hones her skills at FUNWAY Ultimate Entertainment Center in Batavia under the guidance of long-time PBA professional Mike Sopper.

Mabel hopes to eventually use her abilities to earn a spot on Team USA, an elite group of top American men and women athletes who represent the U.S. in international bowling competitions. For now she has other priorities like staying on the KHS Honor Roll despite being enrolled in advanced level (challenge) classes and teaching early life skills to second and third graders on Sunday mornings at Fox Valley Christian Church.

Mabel Cummins, a sixth-grader at Kaneland Harter Middle School and of Elburn, is traveling to Detroit next week to compete in the 12-and-under division of the United States Bowling Congress Youth Open Championships.

Mabel is one of the top junior bowlers in the Chicago area with an average near 180 and a current high game of 238.

Bowling has been part of her life as long as she can remember, even as a toddler growing up in the wilds of Eagle River, Alaska. Somewhere around age 4, she started bowling with her father on Sunday nights before he went to work, but she didn’t get serious about the sport until she moved to the “lower 48” in 2008.

Since coming to Illinois, Mabel has developed a passion for the game and now she bowls with a clear goal in mind: college scholarship.

She has earned recognition with titles in and above her age group and although only 11, she has caught the attention of some well-known professional bowlers. Last month in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, she impressed PBA champions Jason Belmonte and Diandra Asbaty, co-sponsors of the Elite Youth Tour, when she rolled a 5-game, 888 series at a regional event to become the youngest semifinal-

workshops and conferences, and educate firefighters on preventing future fire service injuries and fatalities.

The band, comprised of brothers Adrian Perez on guitar and vocals and Jason Perez on drums and background vocals, will perform at 4 p.m. Sunday in a grandstand show at the Kane County Fair on Randall Road in St. Charles. The show is free with admission to the fair.

Kane County Chronicle reporter Eric Schelkopf spoke to the two members about the show and the band’s music.

ES: Are you guys working on a new album?

AP: The recording process has basi-

Jason Perez: Tons of energy. Just a good time.

On stage, we tend to get into the music quite a bit. We get a lot of feedback about our energy and passion and full sound, along with the quality of the songwriting itself.

ES: You’ve probably heard your music described in different ways. How would you describe your music?

JP: We try to stick with the term acoustic rock. It’s pretty straightforward. It’s definitely not flashy at all.

ES: Of course, last year the band released the CD “Live at The House Pub,” which was recorded at The House Pub in St. Charles. Do you think the album is a good representation of the band’s live show?

JP: You can get a general idea of what to expect, for sure, off of that album. To be honest, it was bittersweet for us. My

Adrian Perez: We might be benefiting from people looking for a different kind of music. They are not content with hearing what is on the radio.

People are leaning towards roots rock where they feel there is genuine music.

But I wouldn’t classify us as roots rock.

The following that it has gained has started to give it a bit more of a defined image, a defined sound, and basically turning it into a genre. We have trouble tying ourselves to any specific genre anyway.

We definitely noticed a difference in his vocals. So the overall album for us was somewhat bittersweet. But I think it captures the energy and the focus of our songwriting.

ES: You guys started playing, I understand, while you were living in Mexico City in 2002.

JP: That was because of our father’s job.

We obviously followed him out there. I was 12 years old.

That’s pretty much the reason we picked up music. Adrian started playing the guitar first, and after a while, he said to me, “Hey, why don’t you get a set of

drums?”

For the next five years, the focus was music. That was pretty much all we did.

ES: Living in Mexico, do you think that influenced your music?

JP: More than anything, I think we benefited from being away from popular music.

We had an idea of how we wanted things to sound, but we didn’t really have too many outside influences as we were growing as musicians. We found our own niche by ourselves.

ES: These days, roots rock seems to be pretty popular. Do you think you guys are benefiting from that?

JP: We are first coming out with an EP. We try to put out small EPs, four or five song EPs, just to give a little taste for what the album might sound like.

This new EP will probably be out sometime in late August.

ES: What can people expect from the new album?

AP: With the new album, we are highly focused on using the elements of our band as they are at the core, which is just drums, acoustic guitar and vocals.

Without considering other instrumentalists who might be playing or recording with us has really allowed us to color and make more extravagant approaches to what we’re doing.

We’re not relying on anybody else any more. We’ve diving a little deeper into the fact that we are a two-piece rock band, and trying to make that as interesting as possible.

Drawing inspiration from a trip to the Renaissance Fair last summer, Toni Hix, the artistic director of Midsummer Theatre Troupe, said in a news release that, “All characters will be dressed up as if they were going

to the fair.”

“It will be very fun for the whole family, as always,” Hix said in the release. “... The best thing about our troupe is that they can be unpredictable. Audience members will probably be forced to be involved in some way.”

In the last week, we have had nice harvests from beets, Swiss chard, kale, and broccoli. The potatoes are about finished flowering; the tomato plants have many blossoms; and the sweet potatoes just love the heat.

For some reason, our pepper plants in the garden plot are struggling. My guess is a cool spring and early summer, particularly in the evenings. Coinciden-

These peppers are much further along – the reason – a microclimate created by the brick wall that retains heat from the western sun. I just happened to get lucky this year and plant the right vegetable.

Soon the harvest of the spring garden will be waning and the summer garden just beginning ... so, what’s

next? Fall gardening, of course. Kale, Swiss chard, broccoli, and cauliflower often taste better from a fall garden because they benefit from the cooler weather.

This time of year it is difficult to find transplants, so your best bet is to get the veggies that you like by direct sowing of seeds. Check your local garden stores for seeds that may be on sale.

This year in the garden plot, Mary Ann and I are going to try and sow beet seeds where we have already harvested beets. We’re thinking that some of the shade provided by the beets that are currently growing will help keep the soil moist and keep them out of the direct heat of the sun. We’ll see.

150 years after Munch’s birth, gallery offers a look at work beyond ‘The Scream’

By JASON EDWARD KAUFMAN Special To The Washington Post OSLO – Utter the name Edvard Munch and chances are you’ll elicit a two-word rejoinder: “The Scream.”

The Norwegian artist’s ghostlike figure, clasping his hands to his temples and gaping in terror, is possibly the most renowned icon of modern art, more readily identifiable to the general public than any other picture, including van Gogh’s “Bedroom” and Picasso’s “Guernica.” The cartoonish expression of horror and anxiety has spawned posters, kitchen magnets, even life-size inflatable dolls, and countless parodies that place “The Scream” atop the art world’s “most caricatured” list, alongside Mona Lisa.

But there’s a lot more to Munch. And now, to mark the sesquicentennial of the celebrated artist’s birth, the largest ever retrospective of his paintings has opened in Oslo, where he died in 1944.

The media has made the picture a bold-faced name.

Two of the four versions that Munch made (between 1893 and 1910) were stolen from Norwegian museums in 1994 and 2004, and although each was soon recovered, the incidents served as fodder for extended media frenzies.

In case anyone on Earth had yet to hear of “The Scream,” last year a third version, the only one in private hands, sold at Sotheby’s in New York for nearly $120 million – the most ever paid for a single artwork at auction.

Notwithstanding its familiarity, most people misinterpret the picture as a representation of a lunatic screaming

Edvard Munch’s “The Scream,” is one of the most renowned icons of modern art. This and other Munch works will be showcased at the Oslo National Gallery and Munch Museum in Oslo this year, during a celebration of the artist’s 150th birthday. in despair. In fact, the artist recorded in his diary that it evokes his experience of hearing “a scream passing through nature” while on a hilltop stroll above Oslo (then called Christiania). (The record-breaking picture – a pastel on cardboard – has a wooden frame on which the artist inscribed a verse about the incident.)

Despite the extraordinary status of “The Scream,” most Americans know next to nothing about its creator. We haven’t hosted a comprehensive painting retrospective because most of his important works remain in Oslo, where they serve as engines of tourism that

are rarely lent. There have been excellent exhibits of his prints and drawings – the National Gallery of Art in Washington, which has an extensive collection, is showing a 150th-birthday selection through July 28 – but surveys of his paintings, including the 2006 show at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, invariably lack key masterpieces and offer only partial overviews.

Which is one reason the “Munch 150” jubilee in Oslo is a landmark event. The centerpiece retrospective (through Oct. 13) assembles an unprecedented 250 key paintings. They are displayed in two venues, with

the earlier period winding through the grand galleries of the National Museum and the post-1903 pictures filling the entire Munch Museum.

In addition, two major decorative series that Munch painted, in the Oslo University auditorium and the Freia Chocolate Factory employee cafeteria, are accessible during the exhibition, as is the studio the artist built on his estate in Ekely, an affluent suburb of Oslo.

This is literally a oncein-a-lifetime opportunity to study in depth one of the great artists of the early modern period.

Munch’s angst-ridden expressionism is considered Scandinavia’s answer to van Gogh. But while van Gogh’s reputation has flourished in association with modernist France, then the center of the Western art world, Munch remains an enigma of the frozen north.

Munch’s miseries certainly fed his work – his tortured childhood, unease with society and troubled relationships became recurring themes – but the retrospective complicates the canonical equation of his personal life with his art.

Autobiography dissolves into more universal expressions of the human condition, and the invention of symbolic figures and scenarios that convey psychic pain is key to his enduring greatness.

Eye drops, artificial tears can treat mild keratitis Dear Doctor K: I have keratitis, for which my doctor has prescribed antibiotic eye drops.

How did I get this? How can I avoid it in the future?

Dear Reader: Keratitis is an inflammation of the cornea, the clear dome at the front of the eye that covers the pupil and iris (the colored ring around the pupil). Keratitis can cause red eye, the sensation of something in your eye, pain, light sensitivity, watery eye, blurred vision and difficulty keeping your eyelids open.

Keratitis typically results from infection or injury. Infectious keratitis, typically caused by a bacterial or viral infection, usually begins in the outer layer of the cornea, but it can go deeper into the cornea.

If it does go deeper, it can cause permanent injury to the cornea, and that can make your vision worse.

Infectious keratitis can also occur after an injury to the cornea. The injury can weaken the defenses that protect your eye against infection.

An injury can inflame the cornea even if an infection never sets in. Injury may be caused by scratching your eye or wearing poorly fitting contact lenses.

Some autoimmune diseases,

Treatment depends upon the cause. If there is only mild injury to the cornea, no treatment is necessary.

Since your doctor has prescribed antibiotic eye drops, you probably have keratitis caused by a bacterial infection. For more severe bacterial infections, doctors sometimes also prescribe oral antibiotics.

If keratitis is caused by a virus, you would need antiviral eye drops, an antiviral oral medication, or both.

Artificial tears usually are effective for keratitis related to dry eyes. And corticosteroid eye drops, which ease inflammation, are often prescribed for keratitis caused by an autoimmune disease. Treating the underlying disease also helps.

To prevent keratitis: • Avoid eye injury by wearing sunglasses and appropriate eye gear as needed.

• If you have a cold sore, do not put your fingers to your

eyes. The same virus that causes cold sores can cause keratitis.

• If you use contact lenses, wear and care for them properly. Stop wearing them if you suspect you are developing an eye infection.

• Use moisturizing eye drops.

“Red eye” is a pretty common problem. Usually it’s mild, people don’t call their doctor, and it goes away. However, there are other eye conditions besides keratitis that can cause red eyes, and some of them need urgent medical attention.

A few symptoms, in particular, raise “red flags.” When you have them, along with a red eye, you should call your doctor immediately.

They include difficulty seeing things clearly (near or far), pain in the eye, a bad headache located in and around the eye, and nausea or vomiting.

These symptoms can indicate that you have a condition more serious than keratitis, such as acute glaucoma or uveitis, and you need immediate evaluation and treatment.

Divorce can be traumatic for kids Dr. Wallace: I’m 16 and caught in the middle of my parents’ divorce. My parents were divorced four months ago, and I’m living with my mother. She is terribly upset because of the divorce and hates my father with a passion.

My father has visitation rights, and I spend two weekends a month at his house.

When I’m with him, he is very nice and kind, and I love him very much. He never says anything bad about my mother.

All he asks me is how she’s doing. But when I return home after visiting my father, my mother is very cool toward me and starts telling me how much she hates “that man” and how she hopes I’ll stop visiting him. She then unloads on what a rotten, no-good individual my dad is.

Several decades ago, French was the diplomatic language, but it has been replaced by English.

But it still is a beautiful language.

If a bridge player is careful with his entries, he must be an intelligent player. This is a textbook example. How should South play in three no-trump after West leads a fourth-highest heart seven?

South doesn’t like to respond one no-trump, but such is life occasionally at the bridge table.

(Some Souths would respond three clubs, a weak jump shift, but I am not a fan of leaping into the stratosphere with no known fit. Here, it is true, it works fine because East is unlikely to find the testing heart lead against three no-trump.) North, with a good five-card suit, three aces and one king, is worth the jumpraise to three no-trump.

South has only five top tricks: two spades, two hearts (given the opening lead) and one diamond.

Five more winners can come from the club suit, but assuming the defender with the club ace will duck the first round of the suit, declarer will need a hand entry – which is where?

His only winner outside clubs is in hearts. To guarantee that hand entry, South must take the first trick with dummy’s heart ace. Then he drives out the club ace and will eventually come to 10 tricks: two spades, two hearts, one diamond and five clubs.
