LEMONT – Good weather and new hours helped raise attendance at Lemont’s annual Heritage Fest on July 13, Village of Lemont Marketing Coordinator Donna Pecina said.

“We had the greatest weather day,” she said. “We had tons and tons of people there.

Everyone was happy.”

Fest organizers tried new hours this year, holding the festivities between 4 and 11 p.m., with children’s activities open from 4 to 8 p.m. In previous years, children’s events were from 1 to 4 p.m.

Pecina said there was increased attendance at the children’s activities and long lines that lasted until closing.

She said the later start time may have helped attendance for families that had schedule conflicts earlier in the day.

Lemont resident Steve Grand rises to fame with country music video

By DAN FARNHAM dfarnham@shawmedia.com LEMONT – When Lemont resident Steve Grand spent $7,000 to make a music video for the song “All-American Boy,” his expectations were simple.

“I just wanted to make something beautiful that told the story that I felt that resonated with people emotionally,” he said.

The video has tallied more than 1 million views on YouTube and earned notice for being a rare country music video that tells a love story from a gay perspective.

Grand – who sings and plays piano and guitar – is the lead character in the video, which is a story of unrequited love between a man and his straight friend.

Grand started playing piano when he was 6 as a result of a childhood obsession with Schroeder from the “Peanuts” cartoons.

His father later introduced him to rock ‘n’ roll and classic artists such as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin. He started writing songs by age 11.

Grand graduated from Lemont High School in 2008 and attended Belmont University in Nashville for a year before moving home and pursuing a music career.

sic videos in his house before, Grand said, but came to the decision in June that he would not be satisfied with his life without trying to release an original song.

“It has always been my goal to perform my own music live and have an audience there who knows the lyrics and wants to sing along,” he said.

He scraped together the money he had and worked quickly to release the video before the Fourth of July, he said.

Grand said he was surprised by the song’s widespread classification as country music, but doesn’t mind the label because “at the heart of it, country is just good storytelling.”

His mother, Debra Grand, said she is not surprised by

her son’s musical success.

“I know he was put on this earth to make a difference,” she said. “If this is the way, I’m truly behind him in getting this message out.”

For Grand, growing up gay in Lemont was tough.

“When I was growing up, I did not feel welcome to really be myself,” he said.

His mother said she feels bad for the experiences he went through.

“When he was growing up, it wasn’t talked about,” she said.

Besides performing at music venues in Chicago, Grand makes a living playing piano at churches, including two in Lemont.

Grand initially was worried that making the music video would jeopardize his job. But, as of last week, he said he still is playing at the churches, including Ss. Cyril and Methodius, where his family attends Mass.

Grand plans to keep writing music and eventually release a full album. He said he has received several offers from record labels but plans to stay independent for now.

“I did this myself, and I feel like I would have never wanted it to be any other way,” he said. “I gave up everything to do this. I have plenty of more music and a lot more to say. This is just the starting point.”

SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA LEMONT – Ss. Cyril and Methodius Parish in Lemont welcomed the Rev. Waldemar “Valdi” Stawiarski as its new pastor July 1.

Former pastor the Rev. Larry Lisowski, who had been with the parish for 12 years, started a new appointment July 1 as the pastor of Immaculate Conception Parish and St. Joseph Parish in Chicago.

Stawiarski, 36, came from St. Helen Parish in Chicago, where he was pastor for five years. He was born and raised in Poland and moved to the U.S. when he was 22.

Stawiarski said some of his goals as pastor are to finish the renovations on the church and build a bridge between the Polish- and English-speaking portions of the parish.

Stawiarski said one thing that has stood out for him during his short time as pastor is the enthusiasm of the parishioners.

“I haven’t seen such a vibrant and full church,” he said. “It’s a great joy to be a pastor for this historical and lively community.”

Parishioners and members of the community will get the chance to meet Stawiarski in a social setting during the parish’s block party from 7 to 11 p.m. Friday.

World’s fifth-fastest computer sets down at Argonne Labs

LEMONT – When Argonne National Laboratory held a dedication for its new supercomputer on July 1, it was the culmination of almost 10 years of work.

Mira, the fifth fastest supercomputer in the world, is an IBM Blue Gene/Q system consisting of 48 racks of computers and 786,432 processors. It has 768 terabytes of memory and is capable of 10 quadrillion calculations per second.

“People are very excited about it,” said Rick Stevens, Argonne’s associate laboratory director for computing, environment and life sciences. “It’s a new great resource for computational science. You can do things that you just couldn’t do before. If you are an artist, it’s like having a giant canvas.”

The name Mira comes from the Latin root word for “admirable” or “miraculous.” Stevens said Argonne chose the name because it is easy to spell and fun to say.

The project started in 2004 as a collaboration between Argonne, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California and IBM. The labs hired IBM to build a new supercomputer for each site.

Here are some of the projects at Argonne National Laboratory that the new supercomputer Mira will help scientists conduct: • Climate modeling – Working on climate change problems pertaining to the carbon cycle.

• Battery research – Developing a battery using lithium air technology that is potentially 10 times as powerful as current batteries and could be used in electric cars.

• Genomics – Study of the human genome to predict diseases and improve health.

• Modeling blood flow – Examining how blood flow would change using an artificial heart and whether it could predict a stroke or aneurysm.

• Modeling cement – Better understanding cement chemistry to improve performance and reduce carbon footprint.

Five years were spent on research and development. Stevens said IBM developed the supercomputer, while the labs gave the performance requirements. IBM then spent two years putting designs into production.

‘Train Park’ pulling into town In May 2009, the Lemont Park District Board of Commissioners was forced to make the hardest decision in my 8½ years on the board – to remove Jaycee Park.

At the bottom of a detention basin, after years of absorbing water in its four-by-four support posts, the play piece was in need of a major structural overhaul. Once those support posts were removed from the ground, the American’s with Disabilities Act mandated we provide a totally inclusive, handicap accessible park. This was the first time in the district’s history we encountered COMMUNITY this type of mandate and, VOICE without an immediate plan, we opted to take the Patrick Sexton park offline.

In summer 2010, the park board held a community forum to explain our decision to the 35 residents who rightly voiced their displeasure. Under the direction of a new park board and new executive director, we immediately implemented a park replacement policy and schedule so we would never be faced with this embarrassment again.

The board proactively engaged the professional services of the Recreation Accessibility Consultants and Brusseau Design Group to provide an innovative solution for the challenges at Jaycee Park. The board approved a plan to bring the park up to street level and, through proper planning, re-ignited the passion of the neighborhood by redesigning its beloved park.

After a thorough review of our park sites, and by the guidance of our new policy, the park board voted to eliminate the park that once stood at the north end of Timberline Drive with safety concerns in mind. A public forum was held with the residents surrounding Timberline Park, and we discussed in detail our reasons for the elimination.

During the same time frame, the board and executive staff engaged in community discussions for a new and improved Lion’s Park. Local residents and the Lemont Lion’s Club were actively involved in the site re-development and Lion’s Park roared back to life in 2012.

On Aug. 6, the Lemont Park District officially will unveil the most decorated neighborhood park in our system, Virginia Reed Park, a.k.a. “The Train Park.”

This park, originally built in 1948, was inspired by the Singer Warner Mother’s Club and Virginia Dahlman Reed, a staunch advocate for the children in her neighborhood.

I am pleased to announce that through a strong, neighborhood-involved planning process, “Train #1948” at Virginia Reed Park is soon to ride again.

The DuPage Community Foundation awarded nearly $300,000 to local nonprofit agencies in June. The grants ranged from $2,500 to $20,000 and were given to organizations such as DuPage Pads, Family Shelter Service, the People’s Resource Center, Access DuPage and Bridge Communities. We’re glad to see these groups receive funding to help them continue improving life in DuPage County.

8LETTER Parishioners thank leader upon departure To the Editor: Father Larry Lisowski has been guiding the parishioners of SS. Cyril and Methodius Parish for the past 12 years.

Since coming to Lemont in July 2001, he has touched many lives with his engaging sense of humor, meaningful liturgies and authentic homilies.

Under Father Larry’s leadership, the parish has grown to approximately 2,400 registered families. Many new activities and physical renovations took place to rejuvenate not only the parish buildings, but parish life as well.

His strong administrative skills directed several sig-

nificant exterior projects undertaken to preserve the historic parish buildings. These included tuck pointing, roofing, expanding parking and rectory office space, reconstructing the grotto, enlarging the church entrance and renovating the bell tower and rose window.

Equally important, the church’s interior benefited from the restoration of the pipe organ and choir loft. This created additional reconciliation rooms and restroom facilities and totally refreshed its appearance with new paint and lighting, and in the future, with pews and flooring.

Attending to the spiritual side of the parish, Father Larry instituted a number of new

ministries and activities such as bilingual unity masses and dinners, liturgy renovation and welcoming committees, tri-parish youth ministry, summer service trips and the parish block party, just to name a few.

Not one to rest on his laurels, he also organized Lenten missions, retreats, pilgrimages and scripture study groups and established in-home Pre-Cana and baptismal preparation programs.

Humble as well as dedicated, he would be the first to acknowledge that he cannot do it all alone. Fortunately, his gift for encouraging people to become involved and leading by See LETTER, page 8

Canal association to open office in Lemont Metra Station

By DAN FARNHAM dfarnham@shawmedia.com LEMONT – The Canal Corridor Association, the local coordinating entity for the Illinois and Michigan Canal National Heritage Corridor, is expected to open an office in the Lemont Metra Station within the month.

Lemont Village Administrator George Schafer said the village is negotiating a lease with the association for the space previously occupied by the Lemont Chamber of Commerce, which now is operating out of Lemont Village Hall.

Stevens said that because the supercomputer was too big for IBM to put together and test ahead of time, Argonne knew it would discover things it had to fix during the installation.

“Big machines have a very complex process of bringing them up,” he said.

“Each rack has many connections to other racks. You install a few racks, wire them up and test them, then install a few more.”

That process took nearly eight months, after which

The association is at the western end of the canal in LaSalle. Koval said it has been looking for an eastern office along the canal, which starts in Chicago and continues through the Calumet region.

“As we were looking at our options, I think that with (Interstate 355) open, Lemont is an easy place for a lot of people to get to,” she said.

Koval said the association also was attracted to the village’s historical character.

“We’re all about historic preservation of downtowns also, so we wouldn’t have opened up in a strip mall,” she said.

Koval said the village of Lemont was eager to help the association find an office that meets its needs.

Schafer said the village has worked closely with the association in the past.

“It’s good to have their presence in our downtown to bring visitors,” he said.

Koval said the association eventually will look for a larger eastern office that could house a visitor center. Lemont would receive consideration for the location.

A visitor center would allow the association to conduct a series of training workshops and have public meetings and educational programs, Koval said. Lemont is among a rotation of towns that the association uses for public meetings.

Argonne had to put the system through strict tests to determine performance and reliability.

Stevens said Mira has been running effectively for a few weeks. It will be used for all the research projects done at the lab, as well as by other labs across the country.

The new supercomputer will allow researchers to work on larger projects and do projects faster, Stevens said. Researchers use computers to simulate experiments quicker and more efficiently than if they were to physically make the designs. “(A more powerful supercomputer) makes simulations more accurate, so the difference between what your model predicts and what you actually design is as small as possible,” he said.

The scientists at Argonne will not simply sit back and marvel at their new supercomputer. Staying at the forefront of research is a constant process.

Argonne’s last supercomputer, Intrepid, was installed in 2008, well after plans for Mira had started. Mira is 20 times faster than Intrepid, which at the time of its installation was the third-fastest supercomputer in the world.

According to Stevens, Argonne is already making plans for its next supercomputer, which it hopes to have functioning by 2017.

“This is partly what we are talking about with U.S. competitiveness,” he said.

“It takes a large number of people and a decadal effort to stand up these machines.”

8SOUND OFF Come to a full stop I live in downtown La Grange, and I would like to talk about the confusion between stop signs and yield signs. A stop sign is when your car comes to zero miles per hour. A yield sign is when you slow down, look both ways and then go through the intersection. In downtown La Grange, the stop signs are treated as yield signs, and I will say even the La Grange police do not come to a complete stop at the stop sign. We have a lot of pedestrians around here, we even have an elementary school [nearby] and this concept of the rolling stop at a stop sign has got to stop.

Time for spirit rock to go It’s time to retire the Glenbard North High School spirit rock.

For years the rock has been a fun way for the high school’s organizations and teams to express themselves. LEMONT – The Lemont Bromberek School District 113A Board of Education unanimously voted to repair the parking lot at Oakwood School and to replace the wiring for the wireless access points at all district schools during a meeting July 17.

Board member Brian Bushnell was not in attendance.

The asphalt contract was awarded to Accu-Paving, whose bid was $65,180, plus $55 per cubic yard for any special excavation and $50 per cubic yard for labor, material and equipment required for Porous Granular Embankment.

An architect with Wight and Company, the district’s architectural adviser, suggested the district be flexible with the cost in case the construction company finds additional repairs are needed. The board added a stipulation that the construction cost should not exceed $75,000.

“I’m hesitant to write a blank check and say ‘get the job done,’” board member Al Malley said.

The approved wiring quote came from MIDCO and will cost $29,866.83.

The wiring will create wireless access points to all classrooms in the district and is the first step in the district’s plan to update its technology system.

o matter how flu season shapes up this year, one thing’s for certain: Not everyone older than 50 is going to get vaccinated.

Despite universal recommendations urging every person 6 months and older to get vaccinated, many Americans don’t get the flu shot, said Dr. William Schaffner, chairman of the Department of Preventative Medicine at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.

“Absolutely, unhesitatingly, no doubt. You should get your flu shot. And especially older people,” said Schaffner. “People 50 and older are the age group that will experience the most complications from influenza and they will be more serious complications, such as getting pneumonia or ending up in the hospital hooked up to a ventilator.

Dr. Lisa Grohskopf, medical officer with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said “For more mature people, getting the flu shot is really important because as we age the immune system doesn’t respond as well as it did when we were younger.”

But just how good is the flu virus?

Last flu season, the vaccine was 56 percent effective when it came to curbing flu-related medical visits, according to a report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. For people 65 and older, that number dropped to 9 percent effectiveness for the season’s most prevalent flu strain.

Those statistics are eye-opening, but they should not stop you from getting vaccinated.

“It’s not a perfect vaccine like the measles or polio vaccine is perfect. But it’s the best we have right now,” Schaffner said. “I like to use the quote from Voltaire: ‘The perfect is the enemy of the good,’

meaning that waiting for a perfect vaccine in the future is a sure way to catch the flu this season.

While some people believe that the flu is just a bad cold, it’s really a “devilish virus,” Schaffner said.

“It can take a healthy person and in just 48 hours put that person in intensive care,” he said.

Older people are more at risk than the general population. People who are more likely to experience serious complications from the flu are “older, have an illness such as diabetes, are overweight, have underlying heart or lung disease or” whose immune systems are compromised, Schaffner said.

“This is the one (illness) that year in, year out sends more than 200,000 to the hospital and causes over 30,000 excess deaths,” Schaffner added.

The experts have answers ready for the doubters who say, “I got the flu shot, and then I still got the flu!” You may have caught the flu, but it made the illness milder, Schaffner said. “If you went to the doctor, you avoided going to the hospital,” he added.

Older adults do a better job of getting their flu shots, with about 66 percent of people 65 and older vaccinated each year, Schaffner said.

“One way to look at it is, that’s a huge achievement, but on the other hand, one-third of folks were not vaccinated,” he said.

While the big push to get a flu shot begins in September when the vaccine becomes available, don’t hesitate to get vaccinated later in the season.

“The peak month for the flu is February,” Schaffner said. A flu shot is “so easy to get,” especially at walk-in clinics offered at many pharmacies and grocery stores.

You can’t get the flu from getting a flu shot, but it can come with some side effects, Grohskopf said, such as soreness, redness or itching at the site, or a mild fever or cold, which is preferable to the flu.

How to catch up on retirement savings

By Money Living lot of people stress the importance of starting a retirement fund early, but many people don’t keep up with their retirement fund or even make one at all until it seems like it’s too late.

However, there are plenty of ways to start saving money to catch up with your retirement plan.

Set a goal A good start to catching up on your retirement fund is setting a realistic goal for the minimal amount of retirement savings that you’ll need. The essentials are really all that you’ll need to consider at this point.

Manage your time wisely, and ensure that you can handle the stress of two jobs before taking another one on.

Put off retirement If you need some extra time to save, extend your deadline for retirement. It may be disappointing but it will allow you to save up more money and live more comfortably when you do retire.

Traveling by train beats driving, too. You’ll avoid busy roads and the stress of traveling on the highways.

“You can sit back enjoy the scenery, curl up with a good book or even do a bit of writing — letters, journals, stories — train travel seems conducive to the literary mind,” St. Louis said.

Train travel fits your budget, whether that means senior discounts on Amtrak,

coach seats and a bag of snacks carried along, or high-end trains with luxury accommodations and world-class chefs.

Fancy a drink? Many trains boast bar and cafe cars, which are a good place to relax with fellow passengers. Some trains even have smoking cars.

Where to go There’s no easy characterization of train travel. There are iconic long-haul journeys such as a trip along the Trans-Siberian railway, which stretches more than 5,500 miles from Moscow to Vladivostok, Russia, and takes seven days if you don’t stop. Other transcontinental trips traverse America, Canada and Australia.

First-time train riders might prefer a shorter trip and crossing a region rather than a whole country, or picking one country such as France or Italy, which have excellent train infrastructure.

On another short trip, Amtrak’s Adirondack leaves the skyscrapers of New York City behind and cruises through the Hudson River Valley past West Point, then hugs the shoreline of Lake Champlain for 50 miles before ending in Montreal 11 hours later.

History fans can step back in time and take a short journey on an old-fashioned steam train in southeastern Brazil or past Victoria Falls in southern Africa.

St. Regis’ favorite train trip is the scenic journey in the Douro Valley from Porto to Pocinho in Portugal, a beautiful half-day adventure into the heart of Portugal’s most spectacularly set vineyards.

Comfort, elegance and great food at La Tosca VILLA PARK – You can look all you like, but it’s unlikely you’ll find a more authentic Italian experience than La Tosca anywhere else.

As popular as Italian cuisine is, it can be tough to find a unique experience. La Tosca achieves this with ambiance, class and fine food.

When you drive up to the restaurant on St. Charles Road, it immediately stands out for its exterior, with an Italian villa-style façade and terra-cotta roof. Inside, you find they’ve somehow turned a dining room with an immensely high ceiling into an intimate setting, featuring lots of dark wood trim and a few faux cracks on the wall – evocative of Italy’s famously ancient architectural heritage.

As a dining companion and I settled in for a recent evening, we were presented with menus for dinner, the night’s specials and wines. A nice touch on the wine menu are the suggested pairings of wines and meals.

Knowing that I would likely opt for a pasta dish, I selected a glass of Ruffino Chianti. “Pair with pasta with tomato and grilled beef,” the menu says.

For an appetizer, my companion and I shared the

Mozzarella Alla Tosca, which layered prosciutto, mozzarella, roasted peppers, leafy greens and olive oil. It made for a light and savory enticement – very tasty.

Neither of us was in the mood for pizza, although La Tosca has an extensive list of options. I went for the Cannelloni Alla Romana: “Homemade pasta stuffed with meat and spinach with a basciamella tomato sauce.” My companion was tempted by several items on the specials menu, but ultimately went with the Saltimbocca: “Veal medallions, sage, prosciutto, mushrooms and mozzarella cheese in a demiglazed wine sauce.”

After I enjoyed a minestrone soup that came with my entree, and my companion had polished off a delectable garden salad, we were, in short order, presented with our main courses. Before even taking a bite, we knew we’d be leaving with takehome bags; the portions were attractively presented and so generous we knew we wouldn’t be able to finish everything.

I will admit that I heat up a frozen dinner for lunch now and then, and store-bought cannelloni is one of my more

And, as expected, half the entree ended up being my lunch the next day, and much better than anything I could get at the grocery store.

My dining companion said the veal medallions were tender and rich in flavor, and we were surprised to see that they also

came with a side of pasta with marinara sauce. They really don’t want you going home hungry!

For dessert, I went for the chocolate truffle gelato, and my companion chose the profiterole – mini cream puffs in a chocolate mousse – which our server confessed was a favorite. We ended up sharing each other’s portions, and, if pressed, I’m not sure I could choose between the two, as both were extremely rich and sweet.

Ronnie Dunn to headline Rockin’ for the Troops

Best known for being half of the country music duo Brooks & Dunn, he is the headliner for the eighth annual Rockin’ for the Troops benefit concert Saturday at Cantigny Park in Wheaton.

Along with Dunn, performers include Motown tribute band The Voices, the Kimo Williams Band playing rock tributes and original music, plus rockers Arra. Advance tickets are recommended.

“I got a call from my manager, and we were able to do it,” Dunn said in a recent phone interview. “We’ve done countless things to support the troops – concerts at military bases all over the country. It would be great to not have troops in harm’s way, but at the same time, there’s always going to be an opportunity to serve and pay tribute to them.”

And expressing appreciation to the troops is what the volunteer-based, nonprofit OSOT-America is all about. For 10 years, it has embraced the mission: “to support the morale and well-being of American forces by providing comfort, resources and education to them and their families, both while

they are deployed in harm’s way and after their return.”

The packing and shipping of care packages to Ronnie Dunn deployed military members is one of the things the organization does.

As for Dunn, supporting the troops is not the only charitable work he has undertaken lately.

He was among the stars at Toby Keith’s Oklahoma twister relief concert July 6.

“We were actually on the ground outside Oklahoma City when the tornado came through Moore,” Dunn said of the May tragedy, noting that because of

expected bad weather, he had opted not to fly back to Nashville from a concert in Santa Fe, N.M. He said when his bus driver learned a tornado had touched down in Moore, “he fired up the bus, and we hit the road; we drove parallel to that storm system all the way to Memphis.”

That experience may find its way into a song in the future as Dunn’s music continues to evolve.

In response to people who call his new music “not country enough,” Dunn said, “There’s a place for that. I embrace it all. I can come out of a good, rocking song and dive into a hard-core country song. We’re at a time in this business when we’re redefining the rules.”

By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com LEMONT – With a fiveweek break between OTAs and the start of training camp, David Molk has spent much of that time in his hometown of Lemont.

Entering his second season in the NFL with the San Diego Chargers, the 2007 Lemont High School graduate was back at his alma mater last week helping teach players at a youth camp.

Molk is scheduled to fly back out to San Diego on July 23 with practice starting up the next day.

I have spent a lot of my time home. After the season, I came back for six weeks before going up to Michigan.

And now, we’ve had five weeks off since OTAs so I’ve been working out at the high school.

It was more a mental jump than a physical jump. Picking up so many defenses and so many protections. The playbook is unbelievable.

What can you say about how successful the Lemont football program has become?

It’s pretty amazing, it really is amazing. I’m proud to be from this school and proud of what we’ve become. Going back 10 years, who would have thought about Lemont High School in the playoffs or Lemont High School in the championship game? Now that’s expected. It’s a credit to our coaching staff, no doubt.

How would you sum up your rookie year?

It went well. I picked up everything pretty fast; and as far as offenses go, it was my fourth offense in five years.

Is there an individual highlight or moment that stands out to you from your first NFL season?

Just the season as a whole and figuring it all out. It was a different coaching staff, it’s a different stadium and it’s a whole different situation.

Are you looking forward to your second year in the league, which will come under new head coach Mike McCoy? As far as schematically, I’m up to pace with everything. I know far more than I did last year. My comfort level with the NFL and the league, I couldn’t be more comfortable. I know what to expect.

And I love the team I’m with and I love the situation I’m in.

What is it like living in California?

You can’t beat it. It is always beautiful, just perfect.

You miss all the seasons, you see only sun with no humidity. I’m like, where is the rain? Will it ever snow? It’s cool, a lot of fun.

Underclassmen get valuable summer experience

By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com LEMONT – With many of his top players busy with traveling teams, Brian Storako took a bit of a different approach with the summer schedule for his Lemont baseball squad.

The Indians played just 12 games prior to opening the playoffs on Monday.

“We were able to use it as more of an evaluation of guys coming in,” Storako said. “So it worked well in that aspect. The majority of the seniors play traveling ball, so basically we were playing with all juniors and some sophomores.”

Storako did get his full team back together for the playoffs, and the Indians quickly showed why expectations will be high next spring.

Seeded 17th in the Lockport regional, Lemont extracted a measure of revenge with an 11-5 win over Joliet Catholic Monday (Joliet Catholic beat Lemont 3-0 in the regional final in the spring) before beating top-seed Plainfield South 9-3 later that day.

The squad went on to beat Bradley 13-2 on Tuesday.

As for the junior class that Storako and his staff have gotten to know, the head coach says they are pretty much the complete opposite of the seniors.

“They put the ball in play, they hit the ball on the ground and they are fast,” Storako said of the group that finished second in the South Suburban Blue conference as sophomores. “They are a nice complement to the senior class.”

Newcomers who have stood out include juniors Mike Gralla, Jamie Glista and Nate Broskovetz along with sophomore Garrett Acton, a transfer from Brother Rice. In all, four incoming sophomores have gotten a taste of varsity action.

Add in the outstanding senior class, led by Jake Latz, Mike Papierski, Mike Wisz, Jake Terrazas, Eric Tucker and Charlie Wright and the sky seems to be the limit in 2014.

“It’s that dreaded word ‘potential,’ and that can be a double-edged sword,” Storako added. “You either live up to your potential or you don’t. But our kids are excited about it.”

Indians boys basketball program retool on display this summer

By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com LEMONT – This summer was a busy one for the Lemont boys basketball program.

Playing in the South Suburban Summer league every Tuesday and Thursday night in June, in addition to three tournaments and a couple of one-day shootouts, the Indians ended up playing in more than 50 games.

“We did pretty well,” Lemont coach Rick Runaas said. “Without keeping track for sure, I would say we won more than we lost. We competed well. It was a very productive summer.”

The six-week season held extra importance this time around with Lemont having lost a dominant senior class to graduation. In addition, returning starters Mike Wisz and Jake Terrazas missed a lot of time due to baseball commitments.

“We went into the summer with a lot of guys who hadn’t played any varsity minutes,” the coach said.

“Losing so much of our senior talent, even our bench strength was senior heavy. It was very important for us to use this time to assess who we have and to focus on the development of those guys who are going to get a lot of minutes this year.”

One player who stood out was incoming senior Luis Marquez.

“He is a kid who had success at the freshman and sophomore levels,” Runaas said. “He is working very hard and he is a kid that everyone kind of looks at and sees has a lot of potential.”

The Indians expect to play a little different style come next winter.

“This team will have to be a little more conservative with the ball,” the coach said. “We are going to have to move the ball a little more and seek out better shots.

Last year, if things broke down, Juozas (Balciunas) could make things happen, not only for himself but for others.”

In the meantime, the next couple of months before the 2013-14 season begins are crucial, he said.

“We have talked about that,” Runaas added. “The summertime is important and in some years, more important than others. Last

“The message we left with the team is if you don’t do anything until we come back as a team, you are going to be in trouble. There are about 3½ months before we get back and a lot can happen in that time.”

Palliative care helps patients handle terminal, life-altering maladies

D

r. Linda Smith walks into a room at Providence Alaska Medical Center, ready with a stethoscope and a huge grin.

She teases her patient, Dawn Dillard, saying that her spiky hair recently resembled a “faux hawk.”

Dillard found out she had uterine cancer a year ago.

Her oncologist gave her a year to live. The 57-year-old has beaten those odds, but now her kidneys are failing.

After the laughs are over, Smith sits down on the edge of Dillard’s bed, leans in and starts talking about a surgical procedure to help her kidneys.

Smith is a palliative care doctor, a specialty that is growing rapidly in the U.S. The idea is to help patients cope with a terminal or life-altering illness. And unlike hospice care, it is not offered only in the final months of life. Smith works on pain management, coordinating care and even does some counseling. Dillard, who is now in chemotherapy again, really appreciates it.

“I can’t even say how much she’s helped me,” Dillard says. “Just little things. You know, showing me things like breathing techniques.

Sort of like mediation, just ways to focus on things that are positive and happy rather than focusing on your sickness and how crappy you feel.”

Becoming a better listener Two years ago, Smith was a very different kind of doctor.

She worked in the emergency room at the busy Anchorage hospital, where the goal was to quickly stabilize a patient and move on.

But two decades into her career, she started to question how she was caring for patients at the very end of their lives. She remembers putting patients on breathing tubes and hearing family members

say things like, “I know Dad didn’t want this, but we’re just not ready to let him go.”

“I started to have a lot of regret about doing things to people that were painful and uncomfortable and were prolonging their suffering,” Smith says. She thought, “If I only had the time to sit down with the family, I probably wouldn’t be doing these things.”

In 2011, Smith enrolled in a one-year palliative care fellowship at Providence. She had a lot to learn. She found out she was a bad listener. And she was abrupt. As an ER doctor, sometimes she was so busy she didn’t even sit down to deliver devastating news.

“I can remember saying to families things like, ‘I’m sorry, there’s nothing more I can do.’ And I realize now that sounds like abandonment to many people when you say you can’t do anything more.

And the reality is I may not be able to do anything more to the patient that will make them survive, but there’s a lot more that I can do. I always can do more.”

Treatment tradeoffs A lot of what Smith does is talk to people. She doesn’t advocate for or against treatment, but she

wants patients and their families to understand their decisions.

If a doctor puts in a breathing tube, for example, that may extend a patient’s life, but they won’t be able to eat or talk. If they die with a tube in, the family will miss hearing their last words. So now Smith sits down for hard conversations and looks patients and their family members right in the eye.

There’s a shortage of doctors like Smith who provide palliative care, and the need is growing as baby boomers slide toward old age.

Now Smith works more and makes less money. Some days, she wonders if she’s crazy.

But then she gets to visit a patient like Dawn Dillard.

Back in her hospital room, Dillard and Smith talk about having a second procedure. Smith leaves and calls Dillard’s other doctors.

They end up agreeing that the second procedure isn’t really necessary after all. So instead of staying another night in the hospital, Dillard is back home by the end of the day.
