WOOD DALE – Fouryear-old fraternal twins Malina and Lexie Mosakowski of Wood Dale enjoy playing dress up, swimming, dancing, doing gymnastics and acting.

The girls were recently cast in an upcoming feature film, “Vanished,” about a little girl who gets abducted in broad daylight.

In August, the girls will travel to Indiana to perform their scene in the movie. In the film, the two play Somer and Sandra, based on two girls who were abducted. Each young actress has over 20 words to speak in their scene at a lemonade stand with four other girls.

The twins found out about the movie casting a few months ago through the film’s Facebook page. They applied for the parts by sending in photos, videos and Skyping with the casting director to hear if the girls would be right for speaking roles.

This is not the twins’ first time in front of a camera lens.

The girls have been modeling since they were 10 months old.

Their mother, Jennifer Mosakowski, was shopping for clothes one day when she decided to open up her own shop – L & M Bebe Boutique – because she found other clothes were too expensive. She soon realized she needed models to photograph in the items she was selling, so she began photographing her twins through her own photography company, L & M Bebe Mommy Photography. The girls also model for other boutiques, and sometimes get published

in their mother’s boutique magazine Sparkle Bebe Model Magazine.

“The girls ask me, ‘Can we take pictures today?’” said Mosakowski. “I will take my phone and we will take pictures.”

The film is being produced by an independently funded family-run production company, Dreams Come True Films, LLC, based in Terre Haute, Ind. Candy Beard, also a mother of two, is the film’s director, screen writer and executive producer.

The funds to make the film and two others – “In a Cage,” a film about domestic violence, and “This Promise I Made,” a romantic – come from Beard’s husband and donations from fans. The company has set up an account at www.indiegogo.com where people can donate money to the film. So far, the filmmakers have raised $2,400.

Beard said the idea for “Vanished” came to her in a dream.

“I woke up in 2007 crying,” Beard said. “I was the mother who turned my back on my child and she was abducted.”

Beard wrote the story into a novel and tried to pitch the movie in California with no luck. After starting her own production company, she is finally able to give her dream life.

“I work part-time in a Sam’s Club and I see parents talking and texting and they let their children wander around,” Beard said. “I hope people wake up and realize, ‘that could happen to me.’”

A cast of over 100 people from 17 different states will perform in the feature film.

Donations for troops to be taken at Rock ‘N Wheels

By LAUREN HILL lhill@shawmedia.com ADDISON – During Addison’s weekly Rock ‘N Wheels event, food and personal care donations will be collected to support the troops.

For the first time, Addison will hold an evening dedicat-

ed to the troops during the Salute the Troops Night. The event will be held 6 to 9 p.m.

July 18 on the Village Green, east of Village Hall, 1 Friendship Plaza.

Participants are asked to donate nonperishable and personal care items to the Lisle-based nonprofit Opera-

tion Support Our Troops, Inc. The organization ships care packages consisting of the donated items to more than 5,000 military personnel each year.

“Many residents in Addison and nearby communities want to help our troops, but just don’t know how to,” said Don Weiss, director of

community relations for the Village of Addison. “Here is a great opportunity to do something that will have a direct benefit to those men and women serving our country, by donating to Operation Support Our Troops.”

Prairie Fest celebrates community Area pools open to locals

By LAUREN HILL lhill@shawmedia.com WOOD DALE – Wood Dale’s Prairie Fest will return for its 11th year of family fun next month.

The free festival is Aug. 8 through 11 at the city’s Town Square on Wood Dale Road and Commercial Street. The event open Thursday from 6 to 11 p.m.; continues on Friday from 1 to 11 p.m.; Saturday from 1 to 11 p.m.; and Sunday from 1 to 10 p.m.

Attractions at the festival include carnival rides, arts and craft vendors, food vendors and free performances

by local bands starting at 6:30 p.m.

On Friday, guests can catch performances by bands Downpour (an AC/DC tribute) and Slippery When Wet (a Bon Jovi tribute).

Saturday is filled with tons of fun. Bands such as In Session (pop/rock/country), Radio Disney, The Chauffeurs (’50s-’70s classics), Heartache Tonight (Eagles tribute), Journey Unauthorized (Journey tribute) and Wedding Banned (pop/rock classics).

All ages can participate in a game of bingo from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.

A fireworks spectacular

will begin at 9:30 p.m. The fireworks usually draw between 8,000 to 10,000 people, Mayor Nunzio Pulice said.

Sunday will close out the weekend with performances from Rubber (alt-rock), Fortunate Sons (Creedence Clearwater Revival tribute), Generation (’60s and ’70s pop/ rock) and Marrakesh Express (Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young tribute).

The board of commissioners intends to reopen the Family Aquatic Center for the 2014 season.

Starting July 1, the Roselle Park District will provide the resident rate to Addison residents who hope

to beat the heat in the water this summer. Pool passes can be purchased at the Roselle Community Rec. Center, 555 W. Bryn Mawr. Roselle’s Kemmerling Pool is located at 400 S. Prospect Ave. in Roselle.

Wood Dale Park District also is offering the Wood Dale resident rate to Addison residents for daily admission and pool passes. “The Beach,” the Wood Dale public pool, is at 161 West Commercial St. Passes can be purchased at the Recreation Center Complex, 111 E. Foster Ave. in Wood Dale.

Families can enjoy a host of activities at the 5th annual Anonapalooza Family Summerfest from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. July 21 at Good Templar Park, 528 East Side Drive, Geneva. The event is alcohol free.

Serenity House, which will

receive the proceeds from the event, provides services for individuals recovering from substance abuse and chemical dependence.

Artist retrieves $20,000 in stolen art

By MARI GRIGALIUNAS mgrigaliunas@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – After months of searching, Elmhurst artist Penélope OsioBrown couldn’t believe it when a public goods auction company contacted her with images of her stolen artwork.

“It was very shocking,” she said.

After PropertyRoom.com received the 13 pieces signed

by Osio-Brown from the Kansas City Police Department in Missouri, they followed a standardized process to authenticate the work. Eventually, the company contacted Osio-Brown directly, but nearly nine months after the theft, she almost couldn’t help but think the worst.

“I thought maybe they’re found, but they’re all damaged,” said Osio-Brown.

Amazingly, they weren’t.

The pieces arrived wrapped in bubble wrap and fully in-

tact after police discovered them in a storage unit.

When someone broke into Osio-Brown’s trailer last September following a Kansas art show, it wasn’t the first time she’d had artwork stolen, but this time she sensed the criminals had little if any appreciation for art.

“I think, mostly I was sad because I didn’t think these people knew what was in the trailer,” said Osio-Brown.

The thought of her masterpieces ending up on eBay, Craigslist or worst of all, the garbage, led her to almost cancel her next art show that was scheduled for a week after the theft. Even with only half her usual inventory on hand and numerous assorted tools missing, her husband refused to let her give up.

“My husband encouraged me and told me, ‘you have to go on,’” Osio-Brown said.

So Osio-Brown, her husband and two daughters con-

tinued to show her work at art fairs, but all the while she searched the Internet hoping to retrieve her lost creations.

When PropertyRoom. com CEO PJ Bellomo discovered the $15,000 worth of art had been stolen from Osio-Brown, he made a trip from the company’s Maryland headquarters to hand-deliver the abstract work last week.

“Penélope’s reaction, it was not about the money,” he said.

In fact, the artist admits she might hold onto a few of the recovered originals to remind her of their remarkable journey back home. A true artist, Osio-Brown said her work reflects what she sees, experiences and even fears in life. The returned pieces now tell an important part of her story.

“It’s been worth it,” she said.

Resisting arrest and grocery theft Andres Bahenas-Pinzo, 42, of the 100 block of Ridge Court in Bensenville, was charged with retail theft and resisting arrest at 10:45 a.m. July 3. Bahenas-Pinzo took groceries from Walmart without paying for them, then fled the store and away from a police officer in an attempt to resist arrest.

DUI Dawn Rae Krizek, 48, of the 1100 block of Princeton Drive in Villa Park, was charged with DUI at 12:11 a.m. July 6. An officer heard a loud noise entering a parking lot behind him, and found Krizek driving her vehicle with her front bumper dragging on the parking lot pavement. Krizek was found to be driving under the influence.

Historical society preps for ‘Civil War’

By SARAH SMALL ssmall@shawmedia.com LOMBARD – History comes to life in Lombard during the weekend of July 27, when Four Seasons Park is transformed into war camp for Confederate and Union soldiers during the third annual Sweet’s Civil War Encampment hosted by the Lombard Historical Society.

Throughout the weekend, reenactors will create an 1863 military campsite, perform military drills and demonstrations and participate in a reenacted skirmish between the Confederate and Union sides.

As a third-year event, Lombard’s reenactment is starting to gain a strong reputation for itself among reenactors. Alison Costanzo, education co-

ordinator with the Lombard Historical Society, said she’s gotten feedback from several Civil War interpreters who say they are looking forward to returning to Lombard this year.

“To get that recognition from the reenactors for a three-year event, that makes us feel great,” Costanzo said.

Two local reenactment groups are co-hosting the event. Stanford’s Battery interprets a Confederate battery unit from Mississippi, and they have been participating in reenactment events for many years. The unit owns several cannons that they bring to events.

The Union reenactors are the 8th Veteran Reserve Corps, which is a living history group associated with

the Lombard Historical Society. This unit portrays soldiers, prisoners and women who were associated with the corps during the war. Historically, the 8th Veteran Reserve Corps was encamped at Camp Douglas during the Civil War, and was under the command of Col. Benjamin Sweet. Later, Sweet was promoted to a general and moved to Lombard to help found the town in 1869.

In all, Costanzo estimates there will be about 150 reenactors from 15 units that turn out for the weekend. Last year, 3,000 people turned out for the event, and the historical society is estimating slightly higher numbers this year.

A donation of $5 per person is requested at the event. All money generated will benefit the Lombard Historical Society.

‘I’m the best person for governor’ Dillard addresses packed house of supporters Tuesday in Lombard

By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com HINSDALE – State Sen. Kirk Dillard, R-Hinsdale, spoke to a packed house of supporters Tuesday night at Trademark Tavern & Tap in Lombard, after his announcement Monday to run for governor of Illinois.

The event concluded his two-day trip of Illinois.

“I’m proven, I’m tested, I’m the one Republican that I believe can actually win the general election,” Dillard said as

applause broke out. “But most importantly, I’m the best person for governor of the state of Illinois.”

Before Dillard spoke, a video was presented to supporters showing unemployment statistics, foreclosure signs on homes and businesses shut down. Dillard said it was “unconscionable” to have an unemployment rate hovering around 10 percent.

“Are you ready to help me make this state work again?”

Dillard asked.

The last time Dillard ran for governor he lost the 2010 gubernatorial primary to Republican Sen. Bill Brady by 193 votes.

This time around, Dillard said DuPage County would be the base and he needs residents from there to help.

“I not only ask for your vote, I ask for your help, your support and your prayers,” he said.

Grant provides new summer jobs

new jobs, applicants must be between 16 to 19 years old, and have not been previously employed by Addison Park District. The positions will be available for the rest of the summer, with employment ending Aug. 31.

Celebrating 5 years at 4 Friendship Plaza Just as we wrap up our 15th year of service to the people of Addison, the Addison Public Library has hit another milestone: We’ve been in our new building for five years.

Our new building is perfect for us. The children’s library is bright and open, and it’s easily accessible on the first floor. Our circulation area is designed with cutting-edge technolCOMMUNITY ogy in mind, with room for VOICE self-checkout and self-checkin terminals and a machine John that sorts books. Upstairs, Kokoris we have dozens of computers for adults and teens to use, as well as two computer labs and a handful of private study rooms. Atop our library sits a green roof – a garden of desert plants that helps us keep our heating and cooling costs down. The whole building was designed to be added onto in coming years to make room for a growing collection and a growing community.

We at the library truly blessed to live in a village where citizens respect reading, learning and public recreation enough to give us such an amazing place to work. We hope our patrons, the people of Addison, feel lucky as well to be able to make use of such a fine library.

Every once in a while, someone planning on coming to the library will walk up to the building on the other side of the parking lot – our old building – not knowing we moved. We suspect there are quite a few Addison residents who may not have visited our new location as frequently as they could.

If you’re one of them – or if you know one of them – it’s a great time to head over. Explore the library yourself, or ask for a tour. Even some of our regular visitors might only spend time in, say, the children’s library with their kids, and many patrons have never seen the meeting room where we hold public programs or the board room with its view of the rooftop garden.

We’re lucky to have one of the newest, most cutting-edge libraries in the area, and we draw many people from surrounding towns. Come take advantage of it.

I live in downtown La Grange, and I would like to talk about the confusion between stop signs and yield signs. A stop sign is when your car comes to zero miles per hour. A yield sign is when you slow down, look both ways and then go through the intersection. In downtown La Grange, the stop signs are treated as yield signs, and I will say even the La Grange police do not come to a complete stop at the stop sign.

We have a lot of pedestrians around here, we even have an elementary school [nearby] and this concept of the rolling stop at a stop sign has got to stop.

Considering what we know and teach about water quality, this decision shows that the district is serious about its role as educator, not only of its students, but also of the community. The pavers allow rainwater to flow through them and into the ground, where it is cleaned naturally and returned to our local river or stream. With asphalt lots, the water flows across the surface, picking up dirt and toxins and carrying them to the storm drains, which lead straight to our local rivers or streams.

The unit was patrolling the area near Lake Street and Route 53 when they were alerted to a suspicious vehicle parked in a night club parking lot.

allegedly belonging to Alex E. Reynolds, 24, of the 200 block of Zuelke Drive in Bellwood.

Reynolds was charged with possession of a firearm without a valid FOIA card, possession of ammunition and possession of a firearm by a gang member.

Also taken into custody was

a 17-year-old male who was charged with obstruction and possession of marijuana. Police said the 17-year-old gave investigators false information about his identity.

Reynolds was held at DuPage County Jail and was due in bond court later today. The juvenile was taken to a youth home.

o matter how flu season shapes up this year, one thing’s for certain: Not everyone older than 50 is going to get vaccinated.

Despite universal recommendations urging every person 6 months and older to get vaccinated, many Americans don’t get the flu shot, said Dr. William Schaffner, chairman of the Department of Preventative Medicine at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.

“Absolutely, unhesitatingly, no doubt. You should get your flu shot. And especially older people,” said Schaffner. “People 50 and older are the age group that will experience the most complications from influenza and they will be more serious complications, such as getting pneumonia or ending up in the hospital hooked up to a ventilator.

Dr. Lisa Grohskopf, medical officer with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said “For more mature people, getting the flu shot is really important because as we age the immune system doesn’t respond as well as it did when we were younger.”

But just how good is the flu virus?

Last flu season, the vaccine was 56 percent effective when it came to curbing flu-related medical visits, according to a report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. For people 65 and older, that number dropped to 9 percent effectiveness for the season’s most prevalent flu strain.

Those statistics are eye-opening, but they should not stop you from getting vaccinated.

“It’s not a perfect vaccine like the measles or polio vaccine is perfect. But it’s the best we have right now,” Schaffner said. “I like to use the quote from Voltaire: ‘The perfect is the enemy of the good,’

meaning that waiting for a perfect vaccine in the future is a sure way to catch the flu this season.

While some people believe that the flu is just a bad cold, it’s really a “devilish virus,” Schaffner said.

“It can take a healthy person and in just 48 hours put that person in intensive care,” he said.

Older people are more at risk than the general population. People who are more likely to experience serious complications from the flu are “older, have an illness such as diabetes, are overweight, have underlying heart or lung disease or” whose immune systems are compromised, Schaffner said.

“This is the one (illness) that year in, year out sends more than 200,000 to the hospital and causes over 30,000 excess deaths,” Schaffner added.

The experts have answers ready for the doubters who say, “I got the flu shot, and then I still got the flu!” You may have caught the flu, but it made the illness milder, Schaffner said. “If you went to the doctor, you avoided going to the hospital,” he added.

Older adults do a better job of getting their flu shots, with about 66 percent of people 65 and older vaccinated each year, Schaffner said.

“One way to look at it is, that’s a huge achievement, but on the other hand, one-third of folks were not vaccinated,” he said.

While the big push to get a flu shot begins in September when the vaccine becomes available, don’t hesitate to get vaccinated later in the season.

“The peak month for the flu is February,” Schaffner said. A flu shot is “so easy to get,” especially at walk-in clinics offered at many pharmacies and grocery stores.

You can’t get the flu from getting a flu shot, but it can come with some side effects, Grohskopf said, such as soreness, redness or itching at the site, or a mild fever or cold, which is preferable to the flu.

How to catch up on retirement savings

By Money Living lot of people stress the importance of starting a retirement fund early, but many people don’t keep up with their retirement fund or even make one at all until it seems like it’s too late.

However, there are plenty of ways to start saving money to catch up with your retirement plan.

Set a goal A good start to catching up on your retirement fund is setting a realistic goal for the minimal amount of retirement savings that you’ll need. The essentials are really all that you’ll need to consider at this point.

Once you’re more caught up on your savings, you’ll be able to set the bar higher.

Every bit counts You should start saving money as soon as you can. Even a few dollars or a few cents is useful to your retirement fund. Even if you don’t have specific accounts or investments in order, you can still start saving up some cash to put into the fund later.

Get out of debt Debt is one of the many things that can destroy a retirement fund.

Take care of as much debt as you can at the moment, and create a plan to lower your debt in the next few years.

This is another area where every little bit counts. Even the smallest contribution toward lowering your debt can save you from hassle in the future.

Create a budget and monitor your spending Creating a budget is a great way to decrease your spending and maximize your savings for your retirement fund and future investments. Monitor your spending to get a good idea of what your weekly or monthly budget should

be. Monitoring your spending also will allow you to get a good idea of where to set your base savings goal for your retirement fund.

Investing in a 401(k) If your employer has a 401(k) plan set up for all employees, take advantage of it. Sign up and start contributing.

Contribute as much as you can whenever you are able to, and keep making contributions whenever you can.

Selling, relocating and downsizing If your children have left the house and you have unused bedrooms and space, consider moving to a smaller house to save on mortgage payments, heat, electricity, air conditioning and more. Selling your old house also will allow you to gain some extra money for your retirement fund. If you’re currently renting your house, downsizing to a smaller home will likely save you money on rent and utilities. Selling old items that you no longer need in yard or garage sales or on the Internet also can build up a good amount of money for your retirement fund.

Consider a second job Even if it’s just part-time and minimum wage, it’s still extra income that can be invaluable to your retirement fund. Look around for a second job that won’t interfere with your current job.

Manage your time wisely, and ensure that you can handle the stress of two jobs before taking another one on.

Put off retirement If you need some extra time to save, extend your deadline for retirement. It may be disappointing but it will allow you to save up more money and live more comfortably when you do retire.

hy not slow things down and enjoy the experience of travel by taking a train trip for your next vacation?

“There are many appealing aspects of train travel,” said Regis St. Louis, Lonely Planet travel writer and coordinating author of the 2012 “USA” guide.

“For one, it forces you to slow down and enjoy the scenery. You’ll have more of a connection to the lands you’re passing across — rather than just soaring over at 35,000 feet oblivious of the lavender fields, river valleys and other great scenery you might be missing.”

The benefits For some trips, flying can’t be avoided, but traveling by train opens up a world of possibilities with abundant benefits. Trains: ◆ Drop you right in the middle of the city where all the action is rather than at an airport in the middle of nowhere. ◆ Hit big cities and picturesque small towns. ◆ Allow you to take more luggage for free. ◆ Allow you to stretch out and move freely with seating that may be reserved or open, more comfortable and possibly with facing seats. ◆ Have sleeper cars where you can rest and wake up in another state or country. You can also save money on a hotel room by taking an overnight train to your destination. ◆ Offer more selection of departure/arrival times. ◆ Have no security checkpoints. ◆ May be less costly (unless you splurge) and are more environmentally-friendly.

“There’s also the camaraderie,” St. Louis said, “It’s easier to meet other travelers on a train. I think there’s something about this old-fashioned mode of travel that makes people more open to the delights of travel and sharing stories with others around them. … You’re also likely to meet like-minded travelers and that’s one of the great parts of travel — learning about other cultures and ways of life.”

Traveling by train beats driving, too. You’ll avoid busy roads and the stress of traveling on the highways.

“You can sit back enjoy the scenery, curl up with a good book or even do a bit of writing — letters, journals, stories — train travel seems conducive to the literary mind,” St. Louis said.

Train travel fits your budget, whether that means senior discounts on Amtrak,

coach seats and a bag of snacks carried along, or high-end trains with luxury accommodations and world-class chefs.

Fancy a drink? Many trains boast bar and cafe cars, which are a good place to relax with fellow passengers. Some trains even have smoking cars.

Where to go There’s no easy characterization of train travel. There are iconic long-haul journeys such as a trip along the Trans-Siberian railway, which stretches more than 5,500 miles from Moscow to Vladivostok, Russia, and takes seven days if you don’t stop. Other transcontinental trips traverse America, Canada and Australia.

First-time train riders might prefer a shorter trip and crossing a region rather than a whole country, or picking one country such as France or Italy, which have excellent train infrastructure.

On another short trip, Amtrak’s Adirondack leaves the skyscrapers of New York City behind and cruises through the Hudson River Valley past West Point, then hugs the shoreline of Lake Champlain for 50 miles before ending in Montreal 11 hours later.

History fans can step back in time and take a short journey on an old-fashioned steam train in southeastern Brazil or past Victoria Falls in southern Africa.

St. Regis’ favorite train trip is the scenic journey in the Douro Valley from Porto to Pocinho in Portugal, a beautiful half-day adventure into the heart of Portugal’s most spectacularly set vineyards.

Here are three other recommendations from St. Regis: ◆ In Canada, Via Rail operates the Canadian which makes the three-day journey between Toronto and Vancouver.

The scenery, which takes in the northern Ontario Lake Country, the western plains and the looming Canadian Rockies, is spectacular, and you’re likely to see eagles, elk, moose and even bear. ◆ The narrow-gauge Durango & Silverton train shows off Colorado’s scenic side. This vintage steam-spewing locomotive climbs from 6,500 feet at Durango to more than 9,300 feet in Silverton and takes around 3 1/2 hours to make the 45-mile journey. ◆ How about having breakfast in London, lunch in Paris and returning to England in time for evening cocktails? Hop on the Eurostar for a 180-mph trip that travels via Chunnel under the English Channel and departs every hour.

Comfort, elegance and great food at La Tosca VILLA PARK – You can look all you like, but it’s unlikely you’ll find a more authentic Italian experience than La Tosca anywhere else.

As popular as Italian cuisine is, it can be tough to find a unique experience. La Tosca achieves this with ambiance, class and fine food.

When you drive up to the restaurant on St. Charles Road, it immediately stands out for its exterior, with an Italian villa-style façade and terra-cotta roof. Inside, you find they’ve somehow turned a dining room with an immensely high ceiling into an intimate setting, featuring lots of dark wood trim and a few faux cracks on the wall – evocative of Italy’s famously ancient architectural heritage.

As a dining companion and I settled in for a recent evening, we were presented with menus for dinner, the night’s specials and wines. A nice touch on the wine menu are the suggested pairings of wines and meals.

Knowing that I would likely opt for a pasta dish, I selected a glass of Ruffino Chianti. “Pair with pasta with tomato and grilled beef,” the menu says.

For an appetizer, my companion and I shared the

Mozzarella Alla Tosca, which layered prosciutto, mozzarella, roasted peppers, leafy greens and olive oil. It made for a light and savory enticement – very tasty.

Neither of us was in the mood for pizza, although La Tosca has an extensive list of options. I went for the Cannelloni Alla Romana: “Homemade pasta stuffed with meat and spinach with a basciamella tomato sauce.” My companion was tempted by several items on the specials menu, but ultimately went with the Saltimbocca: “Veal medallions, sage, prosciutto, mushrooms and mozzarella cheese in a demiglazed wine sauce.”

After I enjoyed a minestrone soup that came with my entree, and my companion had polished off a delectable garden salad, we were, in short order, presented with our main courses. Before even taking a bite, we knew we’d be leaving with takehome bags; the portions were attractively presented and so generous we knew we wouldn’t be able to finish everything.

I will admit that I heat up a frozen dinner for lunch now and then, and store-bought cannelloni is one of my more

Compared to what’s served at La Tosca, the microwaveable meal can hardly be considered food. I found myself letting each bite linger for a moment as I experienced all the subtle shadings of flavor.

And, as expected, half the entree ended up being my lunch the next day, and much better than anything I could get at the grocery store.

My dining companion said the veal medallions were tender and rich in flavor, and we were surprised to see that they also

came with a side of pasta with marinara sauce. They really don’t want you going home hungry!

For dessert, I went for the chocolate truffle gelato, and my companion chose the profiterole – mini cream puffs in a chocolate mousse – which our server confessed was a favorite. We ended up sharing each other’s portions, and, if pressed, I’m not sure I could choose between the two, as both were extremely rich and sweet.

“I got a call from my manager, and we were able to do it,” Dunn said in a recent phone interview. “We’ve done countless things to support the troops – concerts at military bases all over the country. It would be great to not have troops in harm’s way, but at the same time, there’s always going to be an opportunity to serve and pay tribute to them.”

And expressing appreciation to the troops is what the volunteer-based, nonprofit OSOT-America is all about. For 10 years, it has embraced the mission: “to support the morale and well-being of American forces by providing comfort, resources and education to them and their families, both while

they are deployed in harm’s way and after their return.”

The packing and shipping of care packages to Ronnie Dunn deployed military members is one of the things the organization does.

As for Dunn, supporting the troops is not the only charitable work he has undertaken lately.

He was among the stars at Toby Keith’s Oklahoma twister relief concert July 6.

“We were actually on the ground outside Oklahoma City when the tornado came through Moore,” Dunn said of the May tragedy, noting that because of

expected bad weather, he had opted not to fly back to Nashville from a concert in Santa Fe, N.M. He said when his bus driver learned a tornado had touched down in Moore, “he fired up the bus, and we hit the road; we drove parallel to that storm system all the way to Memphis.”

That experience may find its way into a song in the future as Dunn’s music continues to evolve.

In response to people who call his new music “not country enough,” Dunn said, “There’s a place for that. I embrace it all. I can come out of a good, rocking song and dive into a hard-core country song. We’re at a time in this business when we’re redefining the rules.”

Next year’s team takes shape for Glenbard East baseball

dsantaromita@shawmedia.com LOMBARD – One aspect of summer baseball is the learning and development part of future varsity players.

The other aspect is that summer is prime recruiting season.

Two Glenbard East seniors, Tyler Behrendt and Jimmy MacDonald, are chasing the college dream. The recruiting process can be stressful, but has so far been exciting for the pair.

“It’s exciting, but then also you’re like, ‘this is business,’ too,” said Behrendt, who has already received interest from small local schools via emails.

“You have to work and it’s not just, ‘you get a free ride.’

Not everyone gets this opportunity.”

“It can be stressful if you let it be, but if you just take it as ‘people actually want me,’ you can relax and it’s fun,” MacDonald said.

Behrendt started on the mound in the Rams’ opener of the Phil Lawler Summer State Classic Tournament on Monday before the game was suspended due to rain.

He has emerged as the team’s ace in the summer and will probably take that role into the spring.

Behrendt made just one pitching appearance during the spring, but became a regular in the lineup and totaled 89 at-bats. len and Justin Griffin. “(Summer) is a little different, but we still get together every day and get to play,” Behrendt said. “Just playing together will help improve next year and building friendships and family. Unity will help in the spring.”

MacDonald and fellow senior Anthony Esterly also were top pitchers during the summer.

Behrendt and MacDonald were on travel teams with the hope of catching the eye of a potential future college coach. Behrendt has traveled out of state three times this summer with one more trip planned with the Lombard Lightning while MacDonald had one out-of-state trip with the Lombard Sliders.

The Rams won’t feature as many seniors next season as they did in the spring. Behrendt brings the most experience back, while a mix of inexperienced seniors and varsity newcomers will be forced to step in.

“No position is locked up,” said East coach Joel Pelland. “Guys can outwork other guys and come in and earn a spot next year so it’s pretty open. I’m excited about that, to see what kind of work these guys are going to do in the offseason to improve themselves.”

After losing the playoff opener in the spring, the returning Warriors were eager to get back on the field for summer ball, and the resulting play has coach Vic Wisner excited.

“My senior leadership this summer has been the best I’ve ever seen,” Wisner said.

“A lot of young guys have stepped up. Our sophomores won a conference championship, so they have an idea what it’s like to win. They’ve put a lot of pressure on the guys who are playing to make them better. Honestly, it’s been one of my more enjoyable summers just watching them grow.”

Wisner described the team as his kind of players, grind it out “dirtbag” ballplayers.

Seniors Mike Rothmund, T.J. Case and A.J. Nolen are among the expected core for the spring, while younger players like Matt Pizur have emerged.

Rothmund, the 6-foot-5 first baseman from Lombard,

has received interest from Division I programs and is relishing the leadership role.

“It feels different,” Rothmund said. “The last day of junior year I was like, ‘I’m a senior now.’ It went in a flash.

I’m glad to be a senior because I can move on in baseball and play in college.”

Case has become the team’s ace over the summer, but Pizur, just a sophomore, has shown big potential. Getting his first taste of varsity-level baseball, Pizur has more than held his own and fired a complete game against Montini in an 8-2 win in a regional quarterfinal of the summer state playoffs on Tuesday.

After playing at the freshman level in the spring, Pizur has handled the jump both on and off the field.

“It feels good to be playing out here with good competition,” Pizur said. “My teammates are great. In the beginning you don’t really know anyone, but they welcome you right in.”

VILLA PARK – Summer baseball isn’t about winning, but you wouldn’t know that by looking at Montini faces on Tuesday.

After last season’s run in the summer state tournament, the Broncos know they missed an opportunity in Tuesday’s regional quarterfinal loss to Willowbrook.

The 8-2 defeat ended hope of re-creating last year’s fifthplace finish in the state.

Still, summer ball is about development and teaching. Montini, like every other team in the summer, wasn’t at full strength throughout the season, and younger players got to step into those temporary vacancies.

“We got a lot of young guys coming, and we’re

missing some guys because a lot of other guys got stuff going on with basketball, football and travel baseball,” Montini coach Eric Scott said.

“We get to see a lot of the younger kids play to see what they can do for the next season. Next year we’re going to be pretty senior dominant. We know what those guys can do, but seeing some of the younger guys playing is a big positive.”

Some of the seniors expected to lead Montini next spring are Tyler Tumpane, who was away while working out with the football team, Austin Kline, Eddie

Bava and Jake Mencacci.

Even as far as seniors go, Mencacci was a breakout player during the summer.

During the spring, Mencacci was behind seniors at first base and catcher, but looks to be a crucial part of the lineup next spring.

“You’ve got to step into a leadership role for the younger guys,” he said.
